Texto completoZeolites are important solid acid catalysts largely because of their microporous nature giving them strong shape selective properties. This shape selectivity may be improved by depositing an inert (e. g. silaceous) layer on the surface of the catalyst crystals, which inertises non-shape selective surface acid sites and increases diffusional transport resistances. This thesis presents an investigation, using the zero length column (ZLC) method, into changes in the diffusional properties of cyclohexane in ZSM-5 that has had tetraethoxysilane deposited on the surface in the liquid phase. Theoretical analyses of the ZLC technique and its use in a detailed study of cyclohexane in unmodified ZSM-5 were performed in order to prove the reliability of the technique and measure baseline behaviour of the selected system. The ZLC method is a chromatographic technique for the measurement of diffusion coefficients in porous sorbents. Originally developed for gaseous hydrocarbon / zeolite powder systems, it has been experimentally extended to the measurement of liquid sorbate systems, macroporous zeolite pellets and resins and the measurement of self-diffusion through tracer exchange. The technique is robust against the intrusion of external heat and mass transfer effects by the use of relatively high flow rates and small catalyst samples, Analysis of the desorption curves is simple: the slope of the linear (on semilogarthmic axes) long time region gives the diffusional time constant. This so-called 'long time' analysis gives an accurate result for the diilusional time constant.

Texto completoLong-range interacting systems are known to display particular statistical and dynamical properties. To describe their dynamical evolution, we can use kinetic equations describing their density in the phase space. This PhD thesis is divided into two distinct parts. The first part concerns our collaboration with an experimental team on a Magneto-Optical Trap. The physics of this widely-used device, operating with a large number of atoms, is supposed to display effective Coulomb interactions coming from photon rescattering. We have proposed experimental tests to highlight the analog of a Debye length, and its influence on the system response. The experimental realizations do not allow yet a definitive conclusion. In the second part, we analyzed the Vlasov and Kuramoto kinetic models. To study their infinite dimensional dynamics, we looked at bifurcations around unstable steady states. The goal was to obtain reduced equations describing the dynamical evolution. We performed unstable manifold expansions on five different kinetic systems. These reductions are in general not exact and plagued by singularities, yet they predict correctly the nature and scaling of the bifurcation, which we tested numerically. We conjectured an exact dimensional reduction (obtained using the Triple Zero normal form) around the inhomogeneous states of the Vlasov equation. These results are expected to be very generic and could be relevant in an astrophysical context. Other results apply to synchronization phenomena through the Kuramoto model for oscillators with inertia and/or delayed interactions

Speech enhancement is a very important technique in many applications, such as serving as the front-end of the voice communications or the speech recognition systems. It enables the performance of a system to be improved by the application of speech enhancement. The estimation of noise spectrum is still a challenge research for the application of speech enhancement. It is due to the fact that the accuracy of noise estimation can dominate the performance of enhanced speech. In this thesis , we attempt to analyze the stationary property of a channel noise signal. Hence, the property of noise variation is employed to decide either a zero-padding algorithm or a frame-zero-padding method is performed to improve the accuracy of estimating noise spectral level. In the case of nonstationary noise, the frame-zero-padding approach is employed. The noise spectrum can be estimated during the zero-padded frames. In turn, this noise estimate is applied to a spectral subtraction algorithm for enhancing a noise corrupted speech signal. On the other hand, if the noise is stationary, the zero-padding method is used to estimate the amplitude of noise. This estimate is then applied to a sample thresholding method for speech enhancement. Experimental results show that the proposed approach can accurately evaluate the stationary property of channel noise. Hence an appropriate zero-padding method is applied in the transmitter. The receiver enhances the corrupted speech in the time domain for stationary noise and in the frequency domain for nonstationary noise. Therefore, the performance of enhanced speech is improved.

Speech and noise signals are mixed in the same channel in speech communication. A speech enhancement system is employed to remove corruption noise, enabling a listener to understand the meaning of received speech. The accuracy of noise estimation significantly affects the performance of enhanced speech. This thesis proposes using a frame-zero padding and peak-spectrum-holding methods adapted by harmonic properties to improve the accuracy of noise estimation. Because speech signals are absent during the zero-padded frames, we can estimate the magnitude of noise spectrum during these periods. In order to improve the performance of frame-zero padding method, robust harmonics in a vowel frame is estimated and employed to adapt the segment length for noise estimation. In the case of a non-vowel frame, the segment length is increased to adequately over-estimate the noise magnitude by the peak-spectrum holding method. So the residual noise can be significantly reduced in enhanced speech. On the contrary, the noise estimate is updated instantaneously during a vowel period, so the noise estimate can be prevented from over-estimation obtained by the peak-spectrum holding method. Accordingly, enhanced speech does not suffer from serious speech distortion. Experimental results show that the proposed method can efficiently remove background and residual noise during speech pause regions, enabling enhanced speech to sound distinct and comfortable.

Texto completo"Zero-length" dimers of ribonuclease A, a novel type of dimers formed by two RNase A molecules bound to each other through a zero-length amide bond [Simons, B.L. et al. (2007) Proteins 66, 183-195], were analyzed, and tested for their possible in vitro cytotoxic activity. Results: (i) Besides dimers, also trimers and higher oligomers can be identified among the products of the covalently linking reaction. (ii) The "zero-length" dimers prepared by us appear not to be a unique species, as was instead reported by Simons et al. The product is heterogeneous, as shown by the involvement in the amide bond of amino and carboxyl groups others than only those belonging to Lys66 and Glu9. This is demonstrated by results obtained with two RNase A mutants, E9A and K66A. (iii) The "zero-length" dimers degrade poly(A).poly(U) (dsRNA) and yeast RNA (ssRNA): while the activity against poly(A).poly(U) increases with the increase of the oligomer's basicity, the activity towards yeast RNA decreases with the increase of oligomers' basicity, in agreement with many previous data, but in contrast with the results reported by Simons et al. (iv) No cytotoxicity against various tumor cells lines could be evidenced in RNase A "zero-length" dimers. (v) They instead become cytotoxic if cationized by conjugation with polyethylenimine [Futami, J. et al. (2005) J. Biosci. Bioengin. 99, 95-103]. However, polyethylenimine derivatives of RNase A "zero-length" dimers and native, monomeric RNase A are equally cytotoxic. In other words, protein "dimericity" does not play any role in this case. Moreover, (vi) cytotoxicity seems not to be specific for tumor cells: polyethylenimine-cationized native RNase A is also cytotoxic towards human monocytes.
