Resumen
This chapter highlights some of the major events in the developments of US Buddhist traditions. It is divided into three main sections that examine the Orientalist construction of Buddhism, the adaptation of Buddhist practices in the United States, and the experiences of Asian immigrant Buddhists. The first section is an important reminder that the antecedent of US Buddhism traces back not to the 1897 World Parliament of Religions, but to an Orientalist conception of “Buddhism” promoted by Eugene Burnouf and other founding members of Western Buddhism. The second section briefly looks at the adaptation of Buddhist practices primarily in the following communities: Zen, Tibetan Buddhism, Soka Gakkai International, and Theravada Buddhism-inspired Vipassana meditation. The last section explores the experiences and practices of Asian American Buddhists beginning with the Chinese contract workers of the nineteenth century to the immigration of new Asian immigrant Buddhists since the Immigration Act of 1965.

Resumen
The past couple of decades have witnessed Buddhist communities both continuing the modernization of Buddhism and questioning some of its limitations. This fascinating portrait of a rapidly changing religious landscape illuminates the aspirations and struggles of younger North American Buddhists during a period that the book identifies as a distinct stage in the assimilation of Buddhism to the West. The author observes both the emergence of new innovative forms of deinstitutionalized Buddhism that blur the boundaries between the religious and secular, and a revalorization of traditional elements of Buddhism such as ethics and community that were discarded in the modernization process. Based on extensive ethnographic and textual research, the book ranges from mindfulness debates in the Vipassana network to the sex scandals in American Zen, while exploring issues around racial diversity and social justice, the impact of new technologies, and generational differences between baby boomer, Gen X, and millennial teachers.

Resumen
In the early twentieth century, The Eastern Buddhist journal pioneered the presentation of Buddhism to the west and encouraged the west’s engagement in interpretation. This interactive process increased dramatically in the post-war period, when dialogue between Buddhist and Christian thought began to take off in earnest. These debates attracted not only Zen voices but also thinkers from the Shin Buddhist tradition. This book brings together a wide range of classic writings from the 1950s to the 1970s which have significantly influenced subsequent Buddhist-Christian dialogue. It is a companion volume to Interactions with Japanese Buddhism: Explorations and Viewpoints in Twentieth Century Kyōto.

Resumen
In the early twentieth-century, The Eastern Buddhist journal pioneered the presentation of Buddhism to the west and encouraged the west’s engagement in interpretation. This interactive process increased dramatically in the post-war period, when dialogue between Buddhist and Christian thought began to take off in earnest. These debates and dialogues brought in voices with a Zen orientation, influenced in part by the philosophical Buddhism of the Kyōto School. Also to be heard, however, were contributions from the Pure Land and the Shin Buddhist traditions, which have a strong tradition in the city. This book brings together a range of authors who have significantly influenced subsequent Buddhist-Christian dialogue and the interaction between east and west. It is a companion volume to Listening to Shin Buddhism: Starting Points of Modern Dialogue.
