Hall, Emese. "The communicative potential of young children's drawings". Thesis, University of Exeter, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10036/105041.

Texto completo
Resumen
This study builds on the work of researchers such as Anning and Ring (2004) and Brooks (2002, 2004, 2005a, 2005b), who have used socio-cultural theory to investigate the influence of context on young children’s drawing, meaning making, and representation at home and in school. My thesis explores the communicative potential of young children’s drawings through case studies of 14 reception and year one children at a rural school in South West England. The three main research questions concerned what and how the children communicated through drawing, as well as drawing influences. Data were collected over one school year, in three seven-week research phases. Spontaneous drawings from home and school were collected in scrapbooks and discussed with the children. The class teacher and the children’s parents were interviewed and observations of the children drawing in class were also conducted. These methods were repeated for each phase. Nearly 800 drawings were analysed through a data-driven, iterative process where intersubjective understandings were emphasised. The communicative potential of the children’s drawings was considerably broad, but one main theme (Identity) and two sub-themes (Power and Purpose) were visible in relation to the data. Importantly, the drawings offered spaces for intellectual play and identity construction, where the children positioned themselves as competent and creative individuals. The drawings were also shaped by a variety of shifting socio-cultural factors stemming from home, school, and elsewhere. The implications of the study highlight the value of recognising drawing as a complex visual language that should be shared through verbal discussion. Additionally, a large-scale survey was conducted in order to gain a broad base of understanding about early years teachers’ beliefs, practices, and knowledge in relation to drawing. The findings appeared to reflect the impact of the ‘‘mixed messages’’ in current educational policy, particularly in regard to the year group that teachers were teaching.

Resumen
Today is the era of millennial generation, many researchers in social sciences claim that Millennials are well-educated, confident, achieving, taking advantage of opportunities and so forth. Nowadays, the world is full of changes and uncertainty the whole nation needs talents of entrepreneurs more than ever before. The challenge for us is that we only know entrepreneurs when they appear themselves. Therefore, there is a great amount of potential entrepreneurs who keep in the background, while others take the best from developing their enterprises. Therefore, the purpose of this thesis is to investigate in entrepreneurial potential of present millennial generation and to understand about potential, external and environment characteristics which contribute our interviewees to become entrepreneurs. The research is conducted by applying both qualitative and quantitative methodology. The face to face interview is conducted with Swedish young entrepreneurs whereas web-based questionnaire survey is conducted with Master students in Sweden by applying FACETS Framework (the facets of entrepreneur: identifying entrepreneurial potential). Regarding application of literature review, conceptual framework, empirical data and discussion of findings part are concluded.

Athayde, Rosemary. "Measuring enterprise potential in young people : developing a robust evaluation tool". Thesis, Kingston University, 2010. http://eprints.kingston.ac.uk/21840/.

Texto completo
Resumen
Enterprise education is a mandatory part of the national curriculum, and all secondary schools in England must provide some kind of enterprise education for pupils. This ranges from work experience and enterprise programmes delivered by voluntary organisations, to economic literacy classes. The aims and objectives of these programmes are many and varied, making the task of evaluating them fraught with difficulties. Indeed, many evaluation studies of enterprise initiatives in general, have been criticised for a lack of scientific rigour. If there is inadequate empirical evidence about the efficacy of these programmes, then how do schools decide which ones to choose? How do programme providers develop their content and reach intended target populations? Worse, how do policy makers make decisions based on the varied and often contradictory aims and objectives of enterprise initiatives, about the design and development their policies? The aim of this research is to try and help to answer some of these questions by developing a methodology for evaluation studies that could be widely used on enterprise education programmes. By using the same methodology, comparisons can be made between different programmes, and take into account the differential impacts on different populations. Specifically, the main objective was to develop a robust programme evaluation tool, which could be widely used to evaluate enterprise education programmes targeted at young people in schools. This research involved the design and piloting of an attitude scale to measure enterprise potential in young people still at school. The development of the scale involved following accepted procedures for scale development, including reliability and validity testing. Two pilot studies are reported in this thesis, along with a longitudinal evaluation of a year-long Young Enterprise Company Programme. By using the attitude scale it was possible to design a methodology using pre-and posttesting, with control groups. Scores on the attitude scale were then compared using a series of statistical tests. This approach was thus able to overcome many of the criticisms frequently made of evaluations of enterprise initiatives. The scale enables researchers to take into account other moderating factors, which may influence attitudes towards enterprise. For policy makers the scale can provide evidence of the efficacy of different types of enterprise education programmes for different target groups, thus helping to identify how best to target resources and investment. The attitude scale can also highlight the potential impact of contextual and demographic factors such as type of school, ethnic background, and a family background of business ownership.

Resumen
This study is centrally concerned with young people's capacity to identify and realise promising educational and occupational pathways. Whilst it is now well established among social scientists that young people have agency, much less is known about what types of agency young people might demonstrate. Based on field research conducted in 2011-2012 with a group of young people studying, working, and living in Nepal's capital city, Kathmandu, the present study scrutinises Western-inspired approaches prevalent in the scholarship on youth which equate agency to resistance and individuality. It does so, by bringing the literature on youth agency into conversation with theoretical work on the concepts of aspiration and mobility. Through an in-depth analysis of young people's time-space-strategies, the thesis contributes to existing literature in three ways: First, it shows that young people may grow in power as they learn to fulfil social obligations and foster stronger relationships with other people. Second, it illustrates that young people's agency may not only take the form of observable practices, but may also reside in young people’s active efforts to think through their options for improving their own and other people's situation. Third, it highlights the importance of young people's spatial mobilities and immobilities in negotiating various social pressures and in developing a sense of themselves as competent, educated, and successful people. The findings of this thesis are, therefore, of relevance to the interdisciplinary field of youth studies as well as to emerging debates in geography about the apparent need to produce 'aspirational citizens' and about the meanings attached to spatial (im)mobility in contemporary societies.

Sayed, Kassem Nermeen. "Young Egyptian activists' perceptions of the potential of social media for mobilisation". Thesis, University of York, 2013. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/4957/.

Texto completo
Resumen
This thesis explores the perceptions of a sample of young Egyptian activists about the potential of social media (SM) for mobilising collective action. Themes of media usage, dispositions and actions (online and off-line) that appear to relate to these perceptions are investigated and analysed. This thesis builds a moderate case for SM’s influence on the mobilisation of collective action. Although young activists purposively use the SM repertoire as instruments through which to mobilise collective action, they believe that the role these media may play varies significantly, depending on the media user, i.e., the contribution of SM to creating favourable dispositions towards the participation and mobilisation of individuals to move from behind their keyboards and to take to the streets differs between activists and non-politicised individuals. The findings suggest that SM are not perceived as a suitable arena for the building of an activist identity, which consequently raises concerns about the commitment to and sustainability of social movements organised on social media platforms. This thesis is organised to allow these arguments to be made clearly in relation to the data. Findings are discussed and analysed in Chapters Five (young activists’ uses of social media), Six (young activists’ contextual perceptions and political dispositions) and Seven (the perceived opportunities to link to off-line space). Each chapter considers several dimensions that are related to the theme being investigated. Throughout these chapters, the data are analysed and discussed horizontally in order to delineate the interconnection and interaction of the research themes. In each chapter, data from questionnaires and focus group discussions (FGDs) are presented. Quantitative and qualitative findings around key themes and issues are presented in an integrated fashion. In most cases, general findings begin by displaying participants’ questionnaire answers. These findings are subsequently considered within the context of what respondents said in FGDs. Chapter Eight coherently draws together these three dimensions based on findings illuminated in the preceding three chapters. It also presents recommendations for practice and future research.

Power, Andrew. "Does social networking have the potential to develop active citizenship in young adults". Thesis, Queen's University Belfast, 2013. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.602787.

Texto completo
Resumen
This thesis looked at how young people are using social networking technologies in the context of active citizenship; how society and younger citizens in particular, are organising themselves in the context of new technologies such as social networking. The thesis built upon existing ideas from the literature in these areas and how a sample of younger citizens were putting social networking technologies to work; forming groups and governing their activities. It looked to a number of individuals and organisations from the political and not-for-profit sectors to get their perspective on the question posed. A typology of networks was developed and explored and an understanding of its connection with active citizenship explored with a sample of those engaged in it. Focus groups with young citizens demonstrated that their engagement with technology and level of connectivity was high. The balance between reach of connectivity and richness of content was shown to be key, both to the popularity of a given social network and the nature of its service. Social networking was shown to be an ideal tool for organising and promoting a wide range of activities and ventures, and in the view of the participants, is supporting and developing active citizenship. Social networks were seen to have the potential to develop active citizenship in part through the awareness building of issues and a primary source of customisable news and information. Young citizens felt empowered to comment, respond, organise or debate on the same platform that is delivering the news. Social networks provided both their primary view of the world and their primary means of interacting with it. The networking building inherent in social networks meant that users felt part of a bigger community which they often feel responsible for contributing to and caring about.

Texto completo
Resumen
Children must learn not to trust everyone to avoid being taken advantage of. In the current study, 5- and 7-year-old children were paired with a partner whose incentives were either congruent (cooperative condition) or conflicting (competitive condition) with theirs. Children of both ages were more likely to mistrust information spontaneously provided by the competitive than the cooperative partner, showing a capacity for detecting contextual effects on incentives. However, a high proportion of children, even at age 7, initially trusted the competitive partner. After being misled once, almost all children mistrusted the partner on a second trial irrespective of the partner’s incentives. These results demonstrate that while even school age children are mostly trusting, they are only beginning to spontaneously consider other’s incentives when interpreting the truthfulness of their utterances. However, after receiving false information only once they immediately switch to an untrusting attitude.

Resumen
This thesis analyses findings from a predominantly qualitative study of young (aged 18 to 24) imprisoned fathers interviewed in prison shortly before release, some of whom were also followed into the community. The research focused on the experiences of these men in prison, and how being a young father in prison affected their attitudes to offending, fatherhood and the future. Furthermore, this work investigated how these men then reintegrated back into the community and whether they managed to fulfil their hopes for change, focussing on what factors helped or hindered this process. This research applies desistance theory and identity theory to the lived experience of young imprisoned fathers; a group that has been largely ignored in previous research. The work is informed by both social-psychological (Maruna, 2001; Farrall, 2002; Meek, 2007a) and sociological perspectives (Laub and Sampson, 2003). This thesis adds to knowledge about the process of change for young offending fathers, highlighting it to be a gradual and active process that draws on both internal and external influences. Change is a complex activity, especially for men with transient relationships and lifestyles, which relies on the fragile coincidence of many inter-connected factors. Due to the instability of many of these factors, it is a process characterised by successes and failures. This thesis argues that criminal justice policies need to support fatherhood to take full advantage of fatherhood’s desistance-potential. The findings provide evidence to support Maruna et al’s (2004a) description of a three track process of change, requiring self-determination, formal support and informal support. They also suggest the need for the additional important factors of identity transformation (Maruna, 2001; Paternoster and Bushway, 2009) in positive social and personal contexts (Farrall, 2002; Walker, 2010). Fatherhood adds an additional layer to these factors. This thesis also contributes to knowledge of how agency and structural factors interact.

Olinger, Renate Ilse. "Comparing vestibular evoked myogenic potential response parameters in young Black African and Caucasian adults". Diss., University of Pretoria, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/60408.

Texto completo
Resumen
Objective: The aim of this study was to compare cervical and ocular vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (cVEMP and oVEMP) in young gender- and age-matched black African and Caucasian male and female adults. Design: A quasi-experimental between-subjects research design was utilised. This study was comparative in nature, thus data was collected in a cross-sectional manner from two age- and gender-matched racial groups, namely black African and Caucasian, and compared. Furthermore, interactions of gender and race were also examined in this research study. Methods: Sixty healthy age- and gender-matched participants (30 black African, 30 Caucasian) between the ages of 18 25 years participated in this study. Fifteen males and fifteen females, within one year of the age of their racial participant counterparts, were included in each racial group. Latencies, peak-to-peak amplitudes and asymmetry ratios were analysed for both groups in these tests. Furthermore, auditory brainstem response (ABR) and electromyography (EMG) testing were conducted to investigate whether possible racial differences in VEMP tests could be attributed to differences in neural or muscular function. Results: Black African participants demonstrated significantly shorter latencies of the n23 component of the cVEMP and the p15 component of the oVEMP, as well as larger peakto- peak amplitude of the oVEMP response. Highly significant differences were found in all EMG measurements between the two racial groups, suggesting that these racial VEMP differences are primarily based on differences in muscular function between black Africans and Caucasians. Significant gender differences were observed in all tests conducted, with females predominantly displaying shorter latencies, while males had larger amplitudes. Conclusions: Young black African adults demonstrated significant differences in both cVEMP and oVEMP responses, namely shorter latencies and larger amplitudes, in comparison to young Caucasian adults. Correlations with differences in EMG measurements suggest that these differences are primarily due to differences in muscular function as opposed to neural function. Future research is required to confirm and expand on these findings.

Zanni, Caroline A. A. "Attention and music : understanding young children's attention and the potential of music to increase attention". Thesis, McGill University, 2004. http://digitool.Library.McGill.CA:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=85108.

Texto completo
Resumen
This study examined three areas related to attention in primary school-aged children to answer the following questions: Are there a distinct neuropsychological differences for young children referred by teachers as lacking in attention compared to those not lacking in attention? Are there advantages to using neuropsychological measures of attention over behaviour rating scales and observations in preschool or early grade school population? Can these same neuropsychological tools evaluate the effectiveness of music with children that have attention problems?
There were 24 participants in this study, 12 children rated as having attention problems by their teacher and 12 children in the control group. Participants age ranged from 5 years 0 months to 6 years 11 months. All the children were of average intelligence, and were attending an English school or preschool within the greater Montreal Area. Participants served as their own controls for the music conditions. Participants were nested within group and order for the four treatment conditions.
Findings indicated that attention difficulties not only affect behaviour, attention, and inhibition, but also influence cognitive processes in language, memory, and visual perceptual abilities especially visual motor precision. Neuropsychological tests were useful in the assessment of children's attention difficulties and could be used to differentiate attention problems that are strictly behavioural from those that are more likely the result of neuropsychological deficits. For children with attention problems environment and music had limited effects on neuropsychological variables. Rock and roll increased children's ability to sustain visual attention if they were classified as having an attention problem. It did not have this effect for children without attention problems. Gross motor inhibition is also affected by rock and roll, but only for boys who have attention problems. Higher level interactions with gender were found in overall neuropsychological functioning and with respect to music. School based interventions must be based not only on behaviour but also on cognitive deficits; early intervention is important to this process.

PhD thesis, Murdoch University, 2021. https://researchrepository.murdoch.edu.au/id/eprint/61058/.

Resumen
Low back pain is the leading cause of disability worldwide, affecting mainly adults but also children. Associations between chronic inflammatory conditions and low back pain have been found frequently in older populations. However, the nature of these relationships in younger populations is unknown. The overall objective of this thesis was to investigate if early life illness factors such as childhood illnesses are risk factors for back pain in adolescence or young adulthood. Our plan involved three parts. Part 1: Literature reviews. Part 2: Analyses of longitudinal data from the Raine Study. Part 3: Analyses of longitudinal data from the CHAMPS Study-DK. Through a two-part scoping review and a systematic review, we found that the most likely risk factors for incident back pain in young people are female sex, older age, psychological distress, and psychological features including emotional coping problems. Based on the findings of the Raine Study analyses we found that children with respiratory or atopic conditions such as asthma and allergic rhinitis, and those with several chronic inflammatory conditions are at increased odds of impactful low back pain in adolescence and young adulthood. Based on the findings of the CHAMPS Study-DK we found there were limited associations between cardiovascular disease risk factors and spinal pain in children and adolescents until the moderating role of health-related physical activity was considered. Furthermore, within both these young cohorts there did not appear to be any association between the inflammatory blood marker C-reactive protein and back pain. We concluded that there is some evidence that early life illness factors are risk factors for back pain in young populations, but more evidence is needed to determine if this involves a causal relationship. There appears to be an association between cardiovascular disease risk factors and spinal pain, however this relationship is dependent on sex, age, and health-related physical activity behaviour.

Jeong, Kiseong. "Aspiration for sanctuary and potential alternatives : new housing environment for young professional single person households in Seoul". Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2017. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/7610/.

Texto completo
Resumen
The number of single person households in global cities such as London and New York has increased dramatically since the 1990s, with significant impacts for development patterns in these cities. The trend has been particularly prominent in South Korea's capital, Seoul, where whose 854,606 single person households represent 23.9% of total households as of 2010 and even more now in 2015. The increase has been mainly driven by the significant increases in young single households aged in their 20s and 30s. The government has been striving to keep pace with the rapid increases in the single person households by supplying residential dwelling types for them such as 'Urban Lifestyle Housing'. However, initial commentary highlights that the resulting housing environment exhibits numerous shortcomings. In this context, there is a need for research to understand the nature of the city living experience for young single person households, their aspirations and the implications for future design and planning approaches in the city. This research aims to address this gap and to provide a basis for recommending potential alternatives in the development and design of new housing for Seoul's changing population, approaching the issue with three perspectives: 'Human relationships', 'Housing design', and 'Economic issues'.

Heo, Nanseol. "The relationship between creative potential and self-regulation among high achieving young adults with the moderating effects of parenting styles". Diss., University of Iowa, 2014. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/4643.

Texto completo
Resumen
Previous literature has suggested that creative students often have difficulties adapting to academic and social contexts, even if they are intellectually gifted (Goertzel & Goertzel, 1960; Kim, 2008). Creative individuals' difficulties in social adaptation can be explained better by introducing the concept of self-regulation, since self-regulation has been found to be a strong predictor of one's academic success, school engagement, and peer social acceptance (Duckworth & Seligman, 2005). Thus, the purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between creative potential and self-regulation among gifted young adults. In addition, this study aims to examine the moderating effects of parenting styles on that relationship. Participants in this study were 311 high achieving students who participated in the Honors Program at the Midwestern University. Their creative potential was assessed by the Runco Ideation Behavior Scale (Runco, Plucker, & Lim, 2001). Results showed that there was no relationship between creative potential and short-term self-regulation. However, creative potential was positively related to the long-term self-regulation of gifted young adults after controlling the effect of gender and semester in the college/university, although it was a small correlation (partial r=.132, p Findings from this study refute the position that gifted individuals' creative potential may relate negatively to their self-regualtion capacities Findings also suggest that authoritative parenting can nurture children's long-term self-regulation without hindering creative potential development.

Resumen
In this paper a news site’s potential of meeting conflicting needs is considered. Snacking - hencereading news in a quick selective style - is one trend among young readers which seems to be inconflict with assessing the credibility of news, which in turn depends on receiving multipleperspectives or viewpoints among the issues read. As young audiences neither want to beforced to put more effort into news reading, nor want to receive news in a single-layered way, satisfaction with the news is hampered. Therefore, the aim of this study is to investigate acurrent news site’s potential in complying with both needs: snacking on the one hand andreceiving multiple perspectives on the other. As research case, the German public service newssite tagesschau.de is investigated in two methodological approaches. In a content analysis thepotential of the news site is assessed by analyzing ways of presenting perspectives in snacknews element. In a reception study this potential is reassessed by a young audience sample. Itwas found that perspectives indeed are presented in snack news elements in direct or indirectforms, often represented by different sources than the journalist’s. However, it shows that thesepresentations of perspectives not always reach the audience. Members of the audience leaveout many elements that could be snacked on, and stick to headlines for the main part. Thisimplies that they miss multiple perspectives offered in elements suitable for snacking, such ashyperlinks. In order to offer multiple perspectives to snacking news readers, more controversyshould be indicated in headlines, comparisons of perspectives should be made easier and linksshould be more relevant by leaving out aspects perceived as unnecessary and by representingsources in a better balance.

Resumen
Thesis (MDram)--Stellenbosch University, 2014.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study aims to investigate the phenomena of theatrical events and festivalisations, specifically aimed at young people. Various methodologies on theatrical events and festivalisation are integrated into a devised model. The devised model offers a clear and comprehensive understanding of the numerous processes and structures that play significant roles in the production and experience of a theatrical event or festival. The devised model is utilised to investigate and analyse the trends and practices of Theatre for Young People internationally (specifically Australia) and locally. The devised model allows the study to highlight certain strengths, opportunities, challenges and shortcomings of the different industries. Through comparing the local trends and practices with those of the international Theatre for Young People industries, areas of development are identified. Finally, the study develops a model that can be implemented into the South African environment, and highlights specific challenges and areas that should be developed in order to create a thriving and sustainable Theatre for Young People industry in South Africa. It is evident that South Africa’s support structures differ significantly from those of other countries where Theatre for Young People industries flourish. This has caused Theatre for Young People practitioners to adopt a predominantly didactic approach to producing events for young people. The study found that, in order to create a thriving Theatre for Young People industry, a balance between the educational and entertainment values of Theatre for Young People should be maintained.

The aim of the present study was to elucidate the possible relationship between the levels of various brain fatty acids and learning indices in aged and young mice classified as &ldquo
good&rdquo
or &ldquo
poor&rdquo
learners basing on their performance in a spatial learning task, the Morris Water Maze. The levels of several fatty acids including palmitic, stearic, oleic, linoleic, arachidonic acid (AA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) were measured using gas chromatography separately in samples from four different brain areas: hippocampus, cortex, striatum and hypothalamus. The level of oleic acid in the cerebral cortex was significantly higher in young-good learners as compared to young-poor learners and higher in young-poor learners than in old-poor learners, with no significant difference in the concentration of this acid between old-good and old-poor learners. The most consistent correlation between animals&rsquo
learning capacity and brain fatty acid&rsquo
level was found for the arachidonic acid in the hippocampal region: AA level was significantly lower in young-good learners as compared to both young-poor learners&rdquo
and old-good learners&rdquo
with young-good learners showing significantly better performance than the two other groups. Interestingly, except hypothalamus, no significant between-group differences were recorded for the remaining fatty acids including DHA, in none of the four brain regions examined.

McDowell, Logan S. "Video Modeling for Teaching Imitation to Young Children With Autism: A Treatment Comparison and Analysis of Potential Predictors of Success". FIU Digital Commons, 2015. http://digitalcommons.fiu.edu/etd/2178.

Texto completo
Resumen
Imitation is a prerequisite for the development of several important abilities. Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) exhibit a distinct deficit in imitation. There has been a considerable amount of research into the most effective ways to teach this crucial skill. Unfortunately, there are drawbacks to many prevalent teaching strategies including difficulty with implementation and lack of generalization. The present study sought to determine whether video modeling (VM) might function as a successful alternative for teaching imitation to young children with ASD. The literature on VM has demonstrated that it can be a highly effective technique for teaching a variety of skills to individuals with ASD. Additionally, VM has been identified as easy to implement and has lead to improved generalization when compared to other treatments. However, there are still a number of questions about when, and for whom, VM is most effective. The current study begins to answer some of these questions by analyzing a treatment comparison between VM and live modeling (LM). Eight children were taught to imitate two equivalent behaviors each, one using VM and the other using LM. The trials to criterion required to learn the behaviors were then compared. Results indicated that there was a significant difference between the two treatment types, and that six of the participants were more successful with VM. Neither social skills nor technological literacy were significant predictors of treatment success. However, pre-treatment imitative abilities were shown to significantly predict success. Those children with the fewest imitative abilities were shown to be more successful with the VM technique, while those children with more imitative abilities were more successful with LM. An additional analysis was conducted to evaluate the predictive relationship between social skills and imitation. Results indicated that social skills significantly predict imitative abilities. These results could have widespread implications for imitation training, as they verify the relationship between social skills and imitation, demonstrate that VM can be an effective treatment for teaching young children with ASD to imitate, and further indicate that a pre-treatment imitation assessment may help to identify the most effective and efficient treatment for each child.

Texto completo
Resumen
Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a non-invasive stimulation technique that modulates brain function by increasing or decreasing cortical excitability (Nitsche & Paulus, 2001). In chronic stroke patients tDCS has been shown to improve function of the affected arm when combined with rehabilitative motor training (e.g. Lindenberg et al., 2010) and thus has the potential to accelerate motor learning. Its potential as a treatment for upper limb function in hemiplegic cerebral palsy (CP) had not been explored, which was the principle aim of this doctorate. After literature reviews on CP and tDCS (Chapter 1) feasibility work in healthy subjects was conducted to develop and validate the experimental procedures (Chapters 2 to 5). Chapter 2 examined whether tDCS improved motor performance of the non-preferred hand in healthy right-handed adults. The sophisticated kinematic outcome measures detected changes in performance due to learning, but no effect of tDCS was found. In Chapter 3, a novel motor learning task was developed and validated in healthy children and adolescents. This task was added to the study protocol and using a revised study design tDCS was found again to have no benefit on either motor performance or motor learning in healthy adults (Chapter 4). Tolerability, perception and acceptance of electrical stimulation were explored in Chapters 5 and 6, with the former showing that tDCS was well tolerated by healthy adults. Using a qualitative research methodology Chapter 6 established that teenagers with CP and their parents had concerns over the application of electricity on the scalp and how little is currently known of tDCS effects in CP. In Chapter 7, tDCS was applied to a teenager with hemiplegic CP with no clear beneficial effects. Finally, the contribution of this doctoral work with regard to the use of tDCS for the rehabilitation of motor function in CP is discussed in Chapter 8.

Thesis, Malmö universitet, Malmö högskola, Institutionen för globala politiska studier (GPS), 2021. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:mau:diva-42878.

Resumen
What is the potential of inclusion of young Muslims in the Finnish media literacy education? In this thesis I answer this research question to draw a conclusion on the importance of coherently operationalizing performance indicators of inclusion in national media literacy policies, which can be transferred and utilized transnationally to counter social exclusion of young Muslims in media literacy education in Western Europe. I define and highlight four core criteria of inclusion to evaluate policy process and input, which contribute with answering the research question posed in this thesis. Moreover, a qualitative content analysis based on a single case study approach is applied to uncover all relevant information from the primary and secondary literature concerning the case selected. Similar to a number of academic studies closely related to the topic of this thesis, I apply the theoretical framework of policy evaluation as a lense to explain and explore the phenomenon under investigation.  Conclusively, this thesis suggests that the potential of inclusion of young Muslims in the Finnish media literacy education is moderate due to the existence of both coherently defined as well as less coherently defined goals, objectives, and related performance indicators of inclusion in the Finnish media literacy policy. Key Words: Inclusion, media literacy policy, media literacy education, Islamist radicalization and extremism, social exclusion, transnational, young Muslims.

Noll, Laura. "Neural Responses to Unfamiliar Infant Faces in Mothers Raising Young Children Under Conditions of Economic Adversity: An Event-Related Potential Study". Thesis, University of Oregon, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/1794/24183.

Texto completo
Resumen
Infant faces represent highly salient visual stimuli that have been shown to elicit intuitive caregiving behaviors in healthy adults. However, the temporal dynamics of infant face processing in parents of young children remain poorly understood and the mechanism of action for the release of intuitive caregiving has not been elucidated. Although substantial advances have been made mapping the parental brain with fMRI, further work is needed to characterize the temporal dynamics of infant visual cue processing—particularly in populations at risk for disruptions in caregiving, such as families raising young children under conditions of economic adversity. Therefore, the purpose of this investigation was to examine the temporal dynamics of caregivers’ neural responses to unfamiliar infant faces in a sample of mothers raising young children with limited financial resources. To achieve this goal, this study utilized an event-related potential (ERP) paradigm—in combination with self-report and observational measures—to (1) examine the temporal dynamics of mothers’ infant face processing across different phases of perceptual processing; (2) test the relationship between mothers’ neural responses to unfamiliar infant faces and to other aspects of parental function; and (3) examine whether mothers’ neural responses to unfamiliar infant faces are sensitive to change with intervention. Three ERP components examined in prior work with caregivers (i.e., the P100, N170, and P300) were utilized to index the temporal dynamics of infant cue processing and two separate sets of analyses (Study 1 and Study 2) were conducted. Broadly speaking, the data collected in this investigation suggest that, for mothers raising young children under conditions of economic adversity, the parental brain begins differentiating between infant emotional expressions very early in the temporal course of stimulus perception and that mothers’ ERPs for unfamiliar infant faces are associated with other aspects of parental function, including self-reported experience and observable caregiving behavior. Preliminary analyses suggest that ERPs for unfamiliar infant faces are sensitive to change via a strength-based parenting program designed to reinforce caregivers’ attention to infant cues. These results are discussed with an emphasis on directions for future research and study limitations.

Pineda, Karina. "An Exploration of Social Determinants of Health Constructs as Potential Mediators between Disability and Condom Usage". Scholar Commons, 2017. http://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/7078.

Texto completo
Resumen
There is limited knowledge on the sexual health behaviors of young adults with physical disabilities, as people with disabilities have traditionally been treated homogenously without acknowledgement of the potential differences between disability types. The objective of this study was twofold. The first goal was to take a novel approach by guidance of the Social Determinants of Health (SDOH) framework to compare how young adults with physical disabilities compare against those without physical disabilities in: 1) vaginal sexual activity, 2) condom usage, and 3) the effect of SDOH factors as potential mediators in predicting unprotected vaginal sex. Relatedly, the second goal was to investigate whether there was a difference in condom usage based on disability type criteria, specifically examining membership into the following impairment groups: physical disability, chronic health conditions, vision impairments, hearing impairments, and stuttering/stammering problems. This study employed secondary data analysis based on data from the National Longitudinal Adolescent to Adult Health Survey (ADD Health) – Wave III, in-home interview, public-use dataset. The variables used for the SDOH proxies were job status, student status, housing type, level of education, mentor status, cohabitation status, and health insurance status. Additionally, other social and demographic factors were also accounted in the model: age, race/ethnicity, gender and sexual orientation. Results from bivariate regression suggest that only those young adults with visual impairments and those with stuttering/stammering issues are less likely to engage in sexual activity when compared to their healthy counterparts. Regarding condom usage among sexually active individuals, those with physical disabilities, chronic health conditions, and hearing impairments may be less likely to use protection than their counterparts. However, further investigation revealed that the associations between condom usage and those disability type groups are mediated by 1 of the 7 measures of SDOH (cohabitation status) and three demographic factors – gender, race, and age. Hence, it is not the disability type that reduces safe sex practices compliance, but rather that those disability groups are associated to social and demographic factors that are, in turn, linked to unsafe sex practices. Furthermore, it appears that irrespective of disability membership, gender, age, race, and cohabitation status are all associated with condom use compliance. Findings advocate for a supplementary investigation of the relative contributions of the particular social factors that mediate the effect between disability status and condom usage.

Resumen
The overall purpose of this master essay is to investigate whether there is an interest among people near retirement to contribute with their knowledge and experience after they reach the defined retirement age. Furthermore, I would like to investigate if they want to continue with their old jobs, full time/part time or to do something else, which is beneficial to the society. I also want to find out how the older people view themselves to continuing to work. Also which types of social and structural barriers that might exist for them and why. The aim is also to investigate what types of knowledge and experience they believe could be used in the future community. For that purpose I have structured interview questions and conducted eight individual interviews. Below is a brief summary of the main results. The study shows that there is a general interest in working after retirement. Most people prefer to work only part-time. Participation and influence is meaningful to the individuals. It is seen as having a positive impact on individuals, groups and societal perspectives. At the individual level, the relationship between the possibility to choose both type of work and working hours and the desire to continue working, is very strong. The choice contributes to the feeling that life is meaningful. That proved to be of great motivation to participate in the working life. The study shows the importance of paying attention to flexible working hours adapted at individual level. The results also show that the elderly are often pictured as competent, knowledgeable and skilled people, which resources can be utilized in the society. It also appeared that older people are carriers of knowledge and experiences, which can be taken care of and transferred on to the younger generations instead of being lost. The study pointed out that there is manual work situations particularly risky for older people. It also revealed negative factors such as competition for the jobs between younger and older people, which can create an opinion in society against letting older people work. The results also indicate that the mixture of older and younger people creates a knowledge and experience transfer which creates new approaches to working tasks. It also emerged a number of factors that influence an individual's choice to attend to work; Important to take an individual approach, assess the participant’s interests and abilities for the particular job, his desired working hours and the need of upgrading or retraining.

Jones, Ceri. "An illusion that makes the past seem real : the potential of living history for developing the historical consciousness of young people". Thesis, University of Leicester, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/2381/10927.

Texto completo
Resumen
In the light of widespread concern over the state of history education in England, this study explores how living history at museums and historic sites contributes to engaging young people in representations of the past. It draws on theories of historical consciousness, specifically that of Rüsen, which imply that ideas about the past formed in the everyday exist in tension with learning history in the classroom. Applying Rüsen’s theory to a novel context, visits by six schools to the Museum of London and the Tower of London, enabled an examination of the interaction between students’ ideas about the medieval past and its representation in living history, and the implications of this interaction for their historical consciousness. Active, conscientious and high achieving, the characteristics of the students involved in this study were significant when understanding their responses to their experiences. However, many of the points made in the literature about the development of young people’s historical understanding were reflected in their experiences, and this study, therefore, builds on a growing body of research which suggests that there are significant cultural patterns to how individuals understand the past. From the evidence of this research, living history’s potential lies in enabling students to encounter, ideally through first-person interpretation, perspectives on the medieval past which (as far as possible) come from within that period. As a dynamic experience, it simulates the real-ness of the past, and makes its differences more concrete for students who are used to thinking about it in abstract ways. More research is needed to understand how the interaction between students and living history performances leads to particular types of historical consciousness, however, understanding living history as a performance, rather than its capacity for reproducing the past authentically, is essential to realising how it interacts with students’ ideas of the past.

Resumen
In the wake of Brexit in 2016, the conception of Frexit was born and received an impetus in the French presidential election campaigns in 2017. The scepticism toward the European Union once again found expression as Eurosceptic political parties gained ground and supporters amongst French citizens. With attitudes toward the EU in France seemingly variable and impressionable of political currents, it is important to understand from where these originate as well as what a positive or negative attitude imply in practice. Therefore, this study aims to map out attitudes among young French citizens: A group with an overall positive attitude toward the EU as well as the generation in charge of the future European Union. The study is conducted in the form of a case study, with the framework of Functional Attitude Theory guiding the analysis. The main findings include an obvious lack of knowledge on the union among the interviewees, connected to a feeling of exclusion from the same. However, benefits and rights provided by the EU are considered grounds to stay within the union. Finally, the findings are discussed and ideas for further research are suggested.

Resumen
This action research study aimed to improve practice by identifying the barriers of using multimedia self-advocacy tools with young people with Cerebral Palsy, and developing strategies to overcome these challenges. A literature review highlighted the limited evidence in the area of self-advocacy for young people with Cerebral Palsy, as well as demonstrating the benefits of emancipatory qualitative methodologies. The planning of the research was person-centred, and carried out with immense thought towards the Children and Families Act (2014), and other relevant codes of practice. Three young people with Cerebral Palsy were recruited in a special educational setting. The action research cycle, in conjunction with a measurement of active participation known as the ladder of participation, were utilised to provide a framework for a collaborative working partnership between researcher, facilitator and participant. Thematic analysis was employed to treat the subsequent data. The results demonstrate that multimedia self-advocacy tools can be beneficial for young people with Cerebral Palsy, and establishes adaptations that successfully increased participation. These findings have the potential to inform the researcher’s own professional practice and that of the wider EP community; the strategies implemented by institutions; and policy, including legislation, at a national level.

Branthwaite, Helen Rachael. "The impact of footwear choice on foot biomechanics in young adults, with considerations to the potential risk of developing foot pathology". Thesis, Staffordshire University, 2015. http://eprints.staffs.ac.uk/2256/.

Texto completo
Resumen
Foot pain and pathology can be disabling leading to more complex orthopaedic complaints over time. Footwear is often attributed as a significant factor in the development and persistence of foot pain, yet little is known about the impact everyday footwear choice has on the development of these pathologies and foot biomechanics. The aim of this collection of work is to assess the impact footwear choice has on foot biomechanics. A mixed methods approach has been employed across various publications to investigate the following; choices made when purchasing footwear, the impact footwear structure and styling has on foot mechanics and comfort and the effect of unstable shoes on muscle function. The publications employed literature reviews, qualitative questionnaires, repeated measures and quasi-experimental designs to address the research questions. There is a paucity of research regarding the effects that everyday footwear have on the feet of healthy individuals. A flat ballet pump was found to be the primary shoe of choice for young females with the colour of trainers being selected by sport science students. Altered physical characteristics of the shoe caused elevated dorsal and plantar foot pressure, impaired comfort and altered function. Fashionable exercise shoes were shown to demonstrate a varied effect on muscle activity. The availability of suitably fashionable and functional footwear appears to be severely limited leading to consumers purchasing inappropriate and ill-fitting footwear that may contribute to foot pathology. An extensive review of design, properties and manufacture with specific consideration to pathology in the footwear industry is recommended to improve footwear choice. The publications presented add new knowledge when evaluating consumer choice of footwear and the potentially adverse impact popular female fashion shoes have on foot biomechanics. The results also contribute to a wider understanding of the impact everyday footwear has on foot pathology and help in the application of footwear related treatment and rehabilitation plans.

Resumen
Children today encounter the English language on a wide scale, even outside the school walls. As they are exposed to various forms of English language input, they inevitably pick up a certain level of proficiency, which they can later use on their own. This study aims to more precisely research through which mediums English learners in primary school worldwide tend to encounter English the most, as well as how engaging in English activities outside the classroom might affect their English proficiency. By studying prior research on the subject through content analysis, it was found that, while there are some regional differences in terms of prevalence, children mainly encounter English through television, music, and computer games. It was also found that many children who had never before received any English training still possessed a level of English proficiency. These findings shed light on the importance of input for language acquisition as well as how children’s extramural interests can be of importance in the classroom setting.

Resumen
Recently, two vaccines against meningococcal serogroup B have been developed. They are prepared according to the reverse vaccinology approach and contain four and two cross-reactive surface proteins. These vaccines, manufactured by GSK and Pfizer, are Bexsero (4CMenB) and Trumenba (MenB-fHbp) respectively. In Italy Bexsero vaccine has been included in the official vaccination schedule and is recommended for infants, adolescents and adults, whereas Trumenba is recommended for adolescents. In order to collect information about the present carriage of Neisseria meningitidis serogroup B in Italian adolescents and to evaluate the potential protection offered by the presently available MenB vaccines, 2,560 otherwise healthy, high school students aged 14-21 years (907 males, 35.4%, median age 16.2 years) were enrolled in Milan, Italy. A swab to collect posterior pharynx secretions was collected from each subject and meningococcal identification, serogrouping, multilocus sequence typing analysis, sequence alignments and phylogenetic analysis were performed. A total of 135 (5.3%) adolescents were meningococcal carriers. Strains belonging to serogroup B were the most common (n = 58; 43%), followed by MenY (n = 32; 23.7%), MenC (n = 7; 5.2%), MenW135 (n = 6; 4.4%) and MenX (n = 5; 3.7%). The remaining bacteria were not capsulated. The identified MenB strains belonged to eleven clonal complexes (CCs): ST-162 CC (n = 12; 20.7%), ST-865 CC (n = 12; 20.7%), ST-41/44/Lin.3 CC (n = 11; 19.0%), ST-35 CC (n = 6; 10.3%), ST-32/ET-5 CC (n = 4; 6.9%), ST-269 CC (n = 3; 5.2%), ST-213 CC (n = 2; 3.4%), ST-198 CC (n = 1; 1.7%), ST-461 CC (n = 1; 1.7%), ST-549 CC (n = 1; 1.7%), and ST-750 CC (n = 1; 1.7%). The analysis of proteins included in two vaccines show that, regarding fHbp gene, all strains except 3 harbored fHbp alleles represented by a total of 31 sub-variants: 18 in variant 1 (v.1 n=25; 45.4%), 8 in variant 2 (v.2 n=25; 45.4%) and 5 in variant 3 (v.3, n=5; 9.1%). The data concerning the percentage of amino acid identity shows that for the detected fHbp sub-variants 1 the identity towards Bexsero varies from 90.9% to 99.2% (median: 96.1%) instead against Trumenba varies from 87.7% to 93.1% (median: 89.2%). The identity regarding detected sub-variant 3 towards the MenB fHbp varies from 93.7% to 100% (median 97.6%). The gene for NHBA protein was found in all strains except for 6 (10.3%) and 21 sub-variants were identified. The sub-variants had an amino acid identity towards the protein included in the Bexsero varying from 71.3% to 99.8% (median: 76%). PorA gene were identified in 53 out of the 58 (91.4%) studied MenB strains and 22 porA sub-types were identified. The amino acid identity between the studied porA proteins and those were included in the Bexsero vaccine was not less than 88.1% (median: 91.8%). The gene for NadA proteins was not detected in any of the 58 studied strains, as expected in carried strains. In conclusion, in adolescent living in Milan, Neisseria meningitidis serogroup B was the most commonly carried followed by serogroup Y. The MenB vaccines presently licensed induce the production of antibodies effective against the greatest part of the identified MenB strains. Monitoring carriage remains essential to evaluate MenB circulation and long-term studies will be useful to evaluate the effects on the carriage and the final efficacy of both new MenB vaccines.

Resumen
The increased usage of media and technology has not only opened new areas for bullies, but also made the visible form of bullying invisible. In addition, movements like ‘me too’ have blossomed showing that sexual harassment is and has been a prevalent issue in the Western world for a long time. Simultaneously, adolescents’ suicide rates have increased. Therefore, selecting a Young Adult (YA) novel like 13 Reasons Why for the English as a foreign language (EFL) classroom may work to address these topical issues and possibly help students understand the consequences of bullying and sexual harassment.

Resumen
The purpose of this study is to identify the needs of homeless young Aboriginal women and develop a culturally appropriate, therapeutic, service delivery model. This model could assist in the natural development of these girls as they journey through the rites of passage into womanhood if implemented in a nurturing, culturally sensitive and relevant environment. A qualitative content analysis methodological approach was used to examine major issues, identify key concepts and analyse these concepts in order to develop deductively, propositions from which organising constructs could be derived and a model developed. This model could then be tested inductively and in a quantitative way that allows best practices to be determined, in future research. The research indicated that although the majority of Supported Assisted Accommodation Program (SAAP) clients represent Aboriginal people, many Aboriginal people do not access the services for a host of reasons. These reasons include mistrust of welfare workers; a fear of abusive 'ardent lesbianism' in the running of the services; fear of racism; and cultural inappropriateness. In conclusion the research shows that a therapeutic model can be developed, which gives lowana the opportunity to learn to know, love and accept themselves; to be proud of their Aboriginality; to express their sensuality and sexuality in a confident, positive manner; and enhance integrity along with identity. The structure and process outlined in the model would be implemented in a culturally sensitive environment whereby the women would learn both Western and Aboriginal cultural applications where appropriate.

Resumen
In recent years, there has been extended research on the Big Five and social media, especially Facebook. Snapchat, a fast-growing photo-sharing app, has however not been thoroughly researched yet. This paper aimed at closing this research gap and at investigating the relationship between the Big Five personality traits and Snapchat users and nonusers. Additionally, it researched the potential of the app to advertise new music published by music labels. The sample consisted of 124 self-selected Snapchat users and non-users (94 Snapchat users and 30 Snapchat non-users), between the ages of 18 and 55. Approximately 53% of the participants were from Sweden, 24% from Germany and the rest from other countries. Participants were asked to complete an online questionnaire comprising the Big Five Inventory and demographic questions. Snapchat users also completed a Snapchat usage questionnaire. Additionally, a short interview about Snapchat was held with a representative of a music label. The results showed that there are only minor differences between Snapchat users and non-users regarding the Big Five personality traits. However, male Snapchat users tend to be more open to new experiences. The usage of specific Snapchat features could be connected to more extraverted, neurotic and conscientious individuals. The overall interest for musicrelated content on Snapchat was rather low. Therefore, Snapchat can be used as a complementary marketing action to raise awareness, but cannot stand alone.
