Resumen
This dissertation constitutes a detailed investigation of the history of the Lok Sin Tong Free School. It discusses how benevolent societies expanded their service scope in Hong Kong, as well as how the reforms in the education system and teaching curriculum of mainland China affected those in Hong Kong in the 1930s. Lok Sin Tong, one of the most remarkable charitable organizations in pre-war Hong Kong, formally expanded into the education field in 1929 with the establishment of the Lok Sin Tong Free School. The School was located at 32 Dai Tit Street, and its aim was to provide free education to children from Kowloon City who had formerly been deprived of schooling. The School began accepting male applicants in 1930. The first principal was Tam Kit-Sang, and the second was Wong Bun-Po. The School offered primary education and a four-year curriculum focusing on Chinese education. By 1938, when a new campus was established, the School’s number of students exceeded 300. However, soon after the outbreak of the Pacific War and Japanese occupation of Hong Kong in December 1941, the School was forced to close its doors. This dissertation comprises six chapters. The first defines the term “free school” and reviews the history of research on the Lok Sin Tong Free School. The second chapter outlines the historical development of Kowloon City and the Kowloon Walled City prior to 1941, and discusses how the local Kowloon City culture was key to the reestablishment of Lok Sin Tong’s services in the late 1920s following a suspension of services early in the century. The third chapter traces the origins and narrates the development of Lok Sin Tong from 1880 to 1941, with an emphasis on the improvement in its services under the leadership of Tam Kit-Sang and Chan Cho-Chak. The fourth chapter investigates the Lok Sin Tong Free School between 1929 and 1941, with special attention paid to its size, the quality of its teachers, its administration, curriculum and pedagogy, and student performance. An evaluation of the School’s overall effectiveness on the basis of these criteria follows. The fifth chapter presents a comparative study of the teaching and learning activities of the Lok Sin Tong Free School and those of the (1) Long Jin Free School and (2) Tung Sin Tong Free School. This comparison reveals the transformation of and changes in Chinese education in Hong Kong. The last chapter concludes the dissertation with a discussion of the interactions among free schools, benevolent societies, and the local community and culture in Hong Kong.

Resumen
The intellectual development in the Tang Dynasty (618-907) could be generally divided into two phases, with the first one inherited from the Han Wei period focusing on the meaning of words, while the second phase focuses on the teaching of the Confucian classics. Among the various scholars during the course of this transformation, Dan Zhu (啖助,724-770) has been recognized as a non-mainstream but yet very influential character. To avoid the An-Shi Rebellion, Dan Zhu resided in the south-eastern part of the country where he taught Lu Chun (陸淳) the Chun Qiu (春秋) classic. Many famous Tang political reformers including Lu Wen (呂溫) and Liu Zong Yuan (柳宗元) are considered by historians as Dan Zhu’s students and followers. This has made Dan Zhu even more influential than other Confucius scholars in that period. Nevertheless, due to the controversial nature of his teachings, Dan Zhu was heavily criticized by Ouyang Xiu (歐陽修) as being specious and at the same time appraised by Cheng Yi (程頤) to be one of the fore-runners who founded the Song Confucianism. This research reveals that Dan Zhu abandons the approach of focusing on the meaning wording and goes directly into the teachings of the classics. He considers that there are large amount of mistakes in the then contemporary explanation of Chun Qiu, he also considers that Tang scholars have not just worked in isolation without much view sharing, but also misinterpreted Confucius’ teachings. Moreover, the Tang scholars are treating Chun Qiu as history or even as literature, rather than Confucius’ teaching on how the society should be run. From Dan Zhu’s perspective, Confucius was trying to make use of histories to set proper behavioural standards and protocols for running the country, with an objective of saving the imperial control of Zhou (周). During the mid-Tang period, China was undergoing major social changes from a feudal to a modern society. Tang imperials whose ancestors carried a nomadic blood stream tried to strengthen their control by adopting Confucianism; and placing more emphasis on the south-eastern region where the Han Chinese of the Southern Dynasty was concentrated. Coupling with the civil examination (科舉) reform and the impacts of Zen Buddhism, the Tang society was undergoing major social-political transformation which Dan Zhu was situated right on its course. The research concludes that Dan Zhu’s ideas fit well with Xuan-zong’s (唐玄宗) appeal for revival of Confucius teachings and the social-political setting in Mid-Tang. Although Dan Zhu is considered a non-mainstream scholar, his teachings have brought about significant impacts on later development of the Neo-Confucianism. Nonetheless, Dan Zhu has not deviated from the fundamental principles of a Confucian whose destiny is to serve the people and the country, and of course for Dan Zhu, the Tang Dynasty.

Nowadays a lot of Chinese medicines have been proved to have the immuno-enhancement effects. In this study, eight tonic Chinese prescriptions, including Huang Qi Liu Yi Tang (HQLYT), were experimented by the method of MTT and the inducement of lipopolysaccharide (LPS). The results showed that HQLYT (12.5 μg/ml) had the best immuno-enhancement effect, which enhances 88% of the survival rate on spleen cells. In the assay of natural killer cell cytotoxicity, HQLYT obviously had its immuno-enhancement effect. Besides, in the assay of leucocyte measurement and the white blood cells (WBC) are significantly proliferated by HQLYT. Using cyclophosphamide to cause leucopenia, this research finds that HQLYT can delay the decline of WBC, and recover WBC back to normal stasis faster. This research also investigates and finds that HQLYT has the protective effect against t-BuOOH (1.25 mM) in Chang liver cells. HQLYT is composed of Astragali Radix (Leguminosae), Glycyrrhizae Radix, and Zizyphi Fructus (Rhamnaceae). Among these components, Glycyrrhizae Radix has the greatest immuno-enhancement effect. Therefore, glycyrrhizin, a main bioactive content of Glycyrrhizae Radix, is chosen to be a substance marker to detect the contents in HQLYT by high performance liquid chromatograph (HPLC). After HPLC-profile of HQLYT is analyzed, the component markers of glycyrrhizin and formononetin are found and the contents of them in HQLYT extract are 7.26±0.04 mg/g and 112.07±0.81 μg/g, respectively. By this HPLC system, it could be as a reference basis of quality control of HQLYT.

Yi-Yi-Ren-Tang is a Traditional Chinese Medicine preparation for treatment and attenuation of arthritis and muscle aches. Ephedrae Herba is one of the prescriptions of Yi-Yi-Ren-Tang. The major compositions of Ephedrae Herba, ephedrines, are banned substances on the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) list. The purpose of this study was to investigate the elimination of urinary ephedrines after administering Yi-Yi-Ren-Tang. Eight healthy volunteers, with a mean age (± SD) of 25.88 (± 2.85) years, weight of 65.00 (± 11.35) kg, height of 171.88 (± 7.34) cm, participated in the experiment. The volunteers took a single dose of 2 g Yi-Yi-Ren-Tang, all urine was collected at certain intervals after 48 hours of administration. Ten healthy athletes were divided into continuously three days or six days groups which took a dose of 2 g for Yi-Yi-Ren-Tang three times per day for three or six days. The subjects in group of continuously three days were 19.33 (± 1.37) years old, 66.83 (± 10.83) kg, and of 159.67 (± 6.47) cm. The subjects in group of continuously six days were 20.50 (± 1.73) years old, 73.57 (± 9.00) kg, and 159.00 (± 6.06) cm. All urine was collected for six days and nine days after administration. Urinary ephedrines for all urine samples were analyzed by liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry. The results showed that the maximum concentrations of ephedrine (E), methylephedrine (ME), norephedrine (NE), norpseudoephedrine (NPE), and pseudoephedrine (PE) following single dose administration were 87.83 ng/mL, 111.11 ng/mL, 155.26 ng/mL, 82.44 ng/mL and 69.41 ng/mL, respectively. The Tmax of ephedrines were between 1-1.4 hours, the t1/2 was between 6-7 hours. The maximum concentrations of ephedrine, methylephedrine, norephedrine, norpseudoephedrine, and pseudoephedrine following three days continuously were 336.00 ng/mL, 266.00 ng/mL, 286.00 ng/mL, 293.61 ng/mL and 314.00 ng/mL, respectively. The maximum concentrations following six days continuously were 318.00 ng/mL, 311.00 ng/mL, 301.67 ng/mL, 155.00 ng/mL and 246.00 ng/mL, respectively. All the concentration of the urinary ephedrines were lower than the threshold of WADA. This study concluded if the athlete takes the Yi-Yi-Ren-Tang preparation according to the drugs instructions (2 g, three times a day) for short-term (six days) in competition would not lead to positive doping result.

Abstract The great national strength of the Tang dynasty and its accompanying prosperity made it possible for its poets to put their focus in no other concerns but the literature, which turned the abundance of the Tang’s poetry into the shrine to the Chinese literature. While the Tang’s poetry has been regarded as one of the most important phase of the Chinese literature, Wen Yi-Duo elaborated it in his own unique way and claimed that the ongoing Chinese literature is actually the continuation of the Chinese poetry. He also claimed that the whole Chinese poetry is best featured in the Tang dynasty and brought up a phrase ‘’’Poetry in the Tang dynasty”. However, a lot of problems exist in his discourse. In my dissertation, I will discuss these problems and the influence by using some chosen materials. Methodologies such as delving into the author’s background and the social context he was in, as well as adhering to the concept that exegesis excludes other explanations, are used to examine Wen Yi-Duo’s perspectives on the Tang dynasty’s poetry, in an attempt to bring forward the pros and cons of his perspectives. In this essay, there are six chapters, which are separated into 3 themes—Wen Yi-Duo’s research on the history of the Tang dynasty’s poetry; research methodologies adopted by Wen Yi-Duo, and the pros and cons of Wen Yi-Duo’s research. The following is the briefing of the six chapters. The first chapter is “The Introduction”. In this chapter, my motif, purposes, research materials and methodologies are introduced. Reviews of the corresponding research are also included. The second chapter, “Reasons that Wen Yi-Duo Started the Research of the Tang Dynasty’s poetry”, studies how Wen Yi-Duo’s life was influenced by this contemporary society, and examines the social context where Wen Yi-Duo’s knowledge was formed. In this chapter, Wen Yi-Duo’s life history and his academic career are clearly depicted through stating the academia in the early Republic, the cultural education and his own education background. The third chapter, “Wen Yi-Duo’s Perspectives on the History of Literature in His Selection of the Tang Dynasty’s Poetry”, finds the association of his analysis of the Tang’s poetry with the literature history of the Tang dynasty, through Wen’s research documents and his selection of the poems in the Tang dynasty. In this way, the poetic verses used by poets in the Early, Prosperous and Middle Tang, and their emotions and thoughts are clearly explained. The fourth chapter, “The Perspectives in Wen Yi-Duo’s Exegesis and Its Application”, analyzes Wen’s exegesis to find out what formed his perspectives and how he used the exegesis, through Wen’s research on the life history of the Tang’s poets’ and how they used words in the poems. The fifth chapter, “The Value and the Defects of Wen’s Research on the Tang’s Poetry”, recognizes the Wen’s historical role as a researcher but at the same time exposes the insufficiency in his methodologies, by focusing both on his achievements and methodologies. As a result of the limitation of his time, the insufficiency of his research, on the other hand, opens up great research possibilities for the present researchers. The sixth chapter, “The Conclusion”, is divided into two themes, one of which tells the historical position of Wen’s exegesis on the Tang’s poetry; the other illustrates the meaning it has to study Wen’s research. Comments are welcome if your research topic is associated. Not only did Wen Yi-Duo regard poetry as the very feature of the Chinese literature, but his research demonstrates the repeat cycle of perspectives on the literature history. His contributions, such as picking out some representatives for poets who wrote similar poems instead of using a category to refer to these poets, as well as bringing forward the concept that exegesis excludes other explanations, made him the special historical role as a researcher of the Tang’s poetry.

SUMMARY Anthology of Tang poem is an important literature in the research on the art of classic Chinese poetry. These anthologies are not only platforms which express litterateurs’ opinion of poetry and literature thought, but mirrors of ideological trend in different era. The Qing dynasty is an era which contains numerous genres of poetry. During the period between Kang Xi and Qian Long, the publishing of anthologies of Tang poem comes to the peak. Yang Fong-Chun’s “Tang Shi Yi” (Explanation of Tang Poem) is one of those publications at that time. Compared to Shen De-Qien’s “Tang Shi Bie Tsai Ji” (Evaluation of Tang Poem) and Sun Zhu’s “Tang Shi San Bai Shou” (Three Hundred Tang Poem), Yang’s anthology is not quite famous and less circulated. As a result, current academia’s evaluation and analysis on “Tang Shi Yi” contain misunderstanding and prejudice. However, Yang Fong-Chun has the ambition of expressing his own theory of poetry by compiling “Tang Shi Yi”. By the research of “Tang Shi Yi” and the comparison of this book and other anthologies in Qing dynasty, the uniqueness of Yang Fong-Chun’s theory of poetry could be clarified. The comprehension of theory system of poetry in the Qing dynasty could also be enhanced. Keywords: Yang Fong-Chun, Tang Shi Yi, Anthology of Tang Poem, Art of classic Chinese poetry

High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and capillary electrophoresis (CE) are two well-known techniques in chemical analysis. Both have many separating modes and are used to assay Chinese herbal drugs. In the present study, two analyzing methods are established for assaying the constituents of the Chinese herbal preparation, Yi-chi-tsung-ming-tang. The suitability of the two methods was also evaluated and compared. Yi-chi-tsung-ming-tang comprises Paeoniae Radix, Astragali Radix, Ginseng Radix, Puerariae Radix, Viticis Fructus, Cimicifugae Rhizoma, Glycyrrhizae Radix and Phellodendri Cortex. In HPLC analysis, eighteen constituents of Yi-chi-tsung-ming-tang, including gallic acid, benzoic acid, oxypaeoniflorin, albiflorin, paeoniflorin, paeonol, formononrtin, ferulic acid, caffeic acid, puerarin, daidzein, berberine, palmatine, jatrorrhizin, glycyrrhizin, 18b-glycyrrhetinic acid and ginsenoside Rb1, were separated in 80 minutes by a Cosmosil 5C18-MS column with a linear gradient elution system containing phosphates and acetonitrile which was detected at 203 nm, 210 nm, and 254 nm. Moreover, the constituents in each component herb and the home-made preparation were investigated herein. The preservation stability of the commercially available Yi-chi-tsung-ming-tang preparations was also evaluated by the developed analysis method. In CE analysis, the analysis of Yi-chi-tsung-ming-tang was cut into two parts, MEKC and CZE, according to the properties of the constituents In MEKC, two constituents, albiflorin and paeoniflorin, could be separated in 15 minutes, using a buffer system containing anionic surfactants (40 mM SC) and acetonitrile as organic modifier. In CZE, thirteen constituents could be separated in 55 minutes, using a buffer system containing 20 mM borate(pH=9.76). The effects of the analysis parameters were also investigated herein. Moreover, one Chinese herb, Artemisiae Capillaris Herba, was analyzed by an on-line sample stacking CE method, sweeping. Also, the suitability and effects of the method were compared with those of the conventional CE methods. From the results of the analysis, it is concluded that HPLC and CE possesses their own beneficial effects in terms of the suitability of the system, analyzing time, stability of the base line, and the number of theoretical plates of each compound, respectively. HPLC and CE can complement each other in the analysis of Chinese herbal preparations.

There are 44 pieces of Yen Zhenqing’s(709-785)rubbing works in Zhong Yi Tang Tie which is currently preserved in Zhejiang Provincial Museum. The works include 15 regular scripts and 29 semi-cursive scripts. Zhong Yi Tang Tie presents both aesthetic and academic value of Yen’s works. From the prospective of calligraphy development history, it is worth notice that Zhong Yi Tang Tie , a personal piece created in Tang dynasty, was discovered and collected at Southern Song dynasty. Since Sonthern Song, Zhong Yi Tang Tie has its unique position in the history of calligraphy, and it has been an important source for us to understand the style of Yen Zenqing. This study begins with the research of Zhong Yi Tang Tie of Yan Zhenqing. by examining the lifetime of Liu Yuangang(1179-?)and his family between the Neo-confucianist ethical spirit of Sonuthen Song dynasty and their social life. Then discuss the establishment of Yan Zhenqing’s temple, and the arrangment of Zhong Yi Tang Tie,in specific, in order to show the position and the image of Yen Zhejiang in Sonthern Song dynasty. There are numerous studies about Yan Zhenqing in the past, but the research of Zhong Yi Tang Tie are most focus on real/ fake issue. However, it is also important to understand the background of Zhong Yi Tang Tie‘s collector and the printer, Liu, as well as his family and the meaning of Zhong Yi Tang Tie in Sonuthen Song dynasty. The research dispute the influence of Yan Zhenqing’s calligraphy in Southern Song dynasty and evaluate the significance of Zhong Yi Tang Tie.

Previously, we have established a human normal tissue stem/progenitor cell primary culture system to show some traditional Bu-Yi medicine may protect injury and promote recovery of the normal tissue stem/progenitor cells from the chemical or irradiation damages. The objective of this study is to examine whether selective Bu Zong Yi Chi Tang (BY-Tang) may present beneficial pharmacologic effects to normal stem cells but not to malignant cancer cells. We treated BY-Tang on breast cancer primary cell (BCAC), breast cancer cell lines (MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231), and normal mesenchymal stem cell (PLA) under Gamma-ray irradiation stress condition. We found the BY-Tang treatment protected the normal PLA cell survival from the irradiation stress, but not in breast cancer cells, in particular the MCF-7 cells. In cell surface marker analysis, BY-Tang reduced AC133+ sub-population of MDA-MB-231 examined. Heterogeneous influences of oncogenes, tumor suppressor genes, apoptotic genes, early genes by treatment of BY-Tang in three breast cancer cells and normal PLA were observed. Specifically, BY-Tang enhanced the gene expressions of cell cycle inhibitor p27 in MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231, and cell necrotic factor P53 in MDA-MB-231, tumor suppressor PNN in BCAC, metastasis suppressor BRMS1 in MDA-MB-231 and BCAC, and the immune-activator CSTL1 in MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231. And down-regulate tumor metastasis gene CHD4 in MCF-7. But with little influence of PLA. In cytokine array analysis, BY-Tang stimulated immune proteins (e.g. IL-1α, IL-1β, M-CSF, MDC, MIG, TRAIL-R3) and secreted tumor suppressor proteins (e.g. GRO, TNF-α and TIMP1) in BCAC,MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231. Results obtained from this study shows that BY-Tang reacts heterogeneously among the studied cancer cell lines, patient tumor cells, normal PLA stem cells. Estrogen dependent type Breast cancers such as MCF-7, exhibited best effectiveness by the BY-Tang treatment, under the RI stress. Therefore, for better therapeutic efficacy, the BY-Tang medicine may potentially be beneficial to the estrogen dependent type breast cancer irradiation treatment. However, prior to the clinical trials, more in vivo animal study is needed to confirm the cell study results.

The scholars who are concerned with the arguments against medicine science and “Yi-Ching”(易經) take the propositions seriously that the medicine and “Yi-Ching” have the same origin(醫易同原) or “Yi-Ching” is the source of the medicine(醫源於易). Tang Zong-Hai(唐宗海) is the philosopher in the late Qing Dynasty who learns both Chinese medicine and theory of “Yi-Ching” and advocates that medicine and “Yi-Ching” can communicate each other(醫易相通). He is the one of the typical representatives who express Chinese and Western medicine being in harmony(中西醫匯通) definitely. The situation in the late Qing Dynasty is turbulent, but it is also a crucial age because the countrymen pay more and more attention to the western medicine. Tang Zong-Hai’s two propositions that medicine and “Yi-Ching” can communicate each other, and Chinese and Western medicine are in harmony indicate the direction which track down the origin and incorporate things of diverse nature. Therefore, Tang Zong-Hai quotes the philosophy of “Yi-Ching” in his book, and inter-reflect the penetrating theory about the communication with medicine and “Yi-Ching” by popularizing and summarizing Yin-Yang(陰陽) in “Yi-Ching”. Moreover, he clarifies the theoretical thoughts about Yi(易學理論) and western learnings(including western medicine) coordinate each other. However, lots of his opinions are restricted by the standard of knowledge at that time and his learnings, so there are some mistakes. In short, Tang Zong-Hai’s thoughts influence on the development of the theory of the medicine in the late Qing Dynasty. “Theory of communication with medicine and ‘Yi-Ching’”(《醫易通說》) is the book that expresses Tang Zong-Hai’s thought “medicine and ‘Yi-Ching’ have the same origin” and collects his thoughts about medicine and Yi. Among it, not only the theory about Yi is the heart of the argument, but also it is infiltrated by the medicinal theory and western learning. This book is remarkable in the scholars’ thoughts which is about the medicine and “Yi-Ching” having the same origin after the modern time. I discuss the book “Theory of Communicating with Medicine and Yi-Ching” from the three aspects which are Tang Zong-Hai’s backgrounds of learning, age and writing. Following his thoughts, I probes the thought “medicine and ‘Yi-Ching’ have the same origin”. At last, we can perceive the essence and the importance of Tang Zong-Hai’s theory that medicine and “Yi-Ching” can communicate each other.

“Yi Chiang Nan” is one of the ancient verse form of tzu. Its form hasn’t changed a lot since Tang-Sung Dynasty, and the phenomena is very rare. So, I want to investigate the reasons according to the verse form of tzu and its works. Chapter 2 analyzes its name and source. It’s common that the verse form of tzu has different names. However, the alternative names of Yi Chiang Nan explain the development of tzu in Tang-Sung Dynasty. Chapter 3 expresses the form of Yi Chiang Nan. From Tang Dynasty, the tzu in Yi Chiang Nan mainly has 27 or 54words. But it usually has more words in Caves. Chapter 4 analyzes its construction. Yi Chiang Nan in Tang-Sung Dynasty was local poetry. Through refining, its characteristics include the refinements of poets. A sentence usually has five or seven words. The rhyme at the end is usually a level tone. Its form is similar to poems. So, Yi Chiang Nan in Tang-Sung Dynasty expanded to practical and literary uses. Chapter 5 to Chapter 7 are the analyses of its works. Chapter 5 and Chapter 6 are practical analyses. The main reason that Yi Chiang Nan could spread wisely and preserve original style is because it is suitable for singing. These two chapters analyze the usage of everyday life. Chapter 7 is the literary analysis. Liou and Bair in Mid-Tang Dynasty established the basic of sadness in Yi Chiang Nan. In late Tang Dynasty and Five Dynasty, Hwang-fuu Song and Uen Tyng-yun used it to describe romances. In Nan Tang Dynasty, Pyng Yan-syh and Li Yuh used it to describe the anxiety of the fate of the nation and the sadness of a conquered country. Therefore, this verse form of tzu, Yi Chiang Nan, was the same as its works in Tang and Five Dynasty. However, this tzu wasn’t easy to be adopted by scholars in Sung Dynasty because they advocated literature. Chapter 8 is the conclusion. The specialty of Yi Chiang Nan is that practical poems are much more than literary poems. So, we know that the literary property promotes the worth of tzu but the practicality spread the usage of tzu. Both of them are important factors of the development of tzu.

Traditional culture and arts and their essences are vanishing under the impact of modern pop culture, including the Shi General Troupes ritual performance culture that originated in Taiwan with hundreds of years of history. The Shi General Troupes that was first founded by the one and only White Dragon Nunnery Ju-yi Zeng-shou-tang in Tainan was implicated in the resistance movement during the years of Japanese occupation, and many precious facial masks and symbolic meanings were lost. Therefore, this study has chosen the Shi General Troupes of the White Dragon Nunnery Ju-yi Zeng-shou-tang as the research subject, and the purpose of this study is described below. 1. Establishing a graphic database of the symbolism facial masks used in the Taiwan-originated Shi General Troupes and retaining the correct Shi General Troupes facial masks; 2. Analyzing the forms and characters of the facial masks of Shi General Troupes; and 3. Understanding the symbolic meanings of the graphics in the facial masks of Shi General Troupes to track back the original graphic meanings defined by the people in the early years. This study adopts methodologies of document method, field survey, in-depth interview, and data mining to investigate the Shi General Troupes of its founder, the White Dragon Nunnery Ju-yi Zeng-shou-tang in Tainan, and uses Ferdinand de Saussure’s dichotomy of the sign in analyzing, contrasting, and summarizing the principles of the forms of the facial masks. Based on the contents of the open coding transcripts and the analysis of Shi General Troupe’s facial masks, the character properties and the graphic meanings of the symbolism facial mask are studied. The results and findings of the study are listed below. (1)With the principles of the forms of facial masks, the characters of the 12 Generals (total 24 facial masks) and 168 factors are analyzed for their special quality. The analysis reveals that Wen Pan divine statue and its costume are the scholarly type; its character is gentle and quiet. All the other characters are the ferocious, Kong-Fu savvy, and violent-tempered type. (2)Ancient people often used traditional folk custom, daily life activities and seasonal scenery as the motifs in the presentation of the facial masks of Shi General Tropes of the one and only White Dragon Nunnery Ju-yi Zeng-shou-tang in Tainan. This study has extracted 18 graphics from the analysis of the principles of the forms of Shi General Troupes. If categorized by property, then there are seven types of graphics: plants, animals, insects, nature, words, weaponries, and special meanings. If analyzed by folk custom and religion, then they are mostly mascots or guardians. (3) Having analyzed the symbolic meanings of the 18 types of Shi General Troupes’ facial mask patterns, 11 meanings are summarized: noble virtue, high vitality, evil repellent, sickness prevention, good luck and well-being, long and prosperous future, guardian and protection, communication between Yin and Yang, judgment of the good and the evil, influential social status, and peace and safety. Most of these meanings are related to traditional folk thinking in peasant culture and have the connotations of embracing well-being and driving off evil spirit.

Bu-zhong-yi-qi-tang (BZYQT) is the kind of popular traditional Chinese medicine, and has been used for the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). At present, we still do not know the effects of BZYQT on the immune system very well. The present in vitro study demonstrated that BZYQT is capable of increasing tumor necrosis factor-a (TNF-a) and granulocyte colony-stimulating-factor (G-CSF) produced by peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC). The production levels of G-CSF by PBMC of health volunteers were higher than those of patients with HCC when more than 625 mg/ml of BZYQT was added. The reason may be due to the impaired immunologic reactivity in patients with HCC. When adding high concentration 3125 mg/ml of BZYQT to the cultured PBMC, the increment of cytokines production decreased although there were no obvious changes in the number of metabolic active PBMC. Further studies are required to clarify this finding. By the way, BZYQT could not influence interferon-g or transforming growth factor b1 produced by PBMC. TNF-a and G-CSF are known to play important roles in the biological defense mechanism. Administration of BZYQT may, therefore, be beneficial for patients with HCC because it can induce these cytokines.

Alois Alzheimer described the typical symptoms and signs of dementia, and first noted the characteristic pathologic picture in the dementia brain one hundred years ago. So far, Alzheimer’s disease is responsible for above 50% of all finds of dementia, is also the third greated heath problem in the elders. In American, Alzheimer’s disease is the sixth leading cause of death, as well paymeats for medicare, long term care for Alzheimer’s disease and other dementia are anticipated more than 200 billion US dollars in 2012. The precise mechanism behind Alzheimer’s disease is not yet disclosed completely,「amyloid cascade hypothesis」is the most predominant model for understanding the pathophysiology of Alzheimer’s disease. However, there are two type of medicines were proved by US FDA for the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease; acetylcholinesterase inhibitors and N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor antagonist. Though both of them can maintain higher level of cognitive function compared with placebo, they are only disease-modifying with multiple adverse effects. Our experiment was designed based on “amyloid cascade hypothesis”, that is widely used for explanation of Alzheimer’s disease pathogenesis, whose animal model with Alzheimer’s disease-like phenotype was developed by infusion A(1-40) in rats brains. There are two protocols in our study, one is preventive, the other is therapeutic; which our medication is Yi-Chi-Tsung-Ming-Tang (YCTMT), a decoction is composed of Astragali radix, Ginserg radix, Pueratiae radix, Paeoniae lactiforae, Phelloadendri conex, Viticis fructus, Cimicifugae uralensis and Glycyrrhiza uralenss. Our results demonstrated the ameliorative effect of YCTMT on A(1-40) induced learning impairment. Oral administration of YCYMT on rats appears to be able to protect A-impaired memory retention, spatial learning and memory, as well promote expression of acetylcholine and NMDARs. Therefore, the therapeutic protential of YCTMY in Alzheimer’s disease merits further investigation.

The China Tong Shan She has been a dominant religious group in China since its establishment in 1917. The status of the China Tong Shan She has been esteemed as equal to the Buddhism and Taoism in Chinese communities. Throughout its nationwide branches in China, it recruited numerous loyal members not only common people but also celebrities, rich merchants and dignitaries of government. The number of its members had been approximately estimated about thirty million during the early twentieth century. Apparently, the organization scale of the China Tong Shan She excelled far more other religious groups. Since 1949, any religion was banned by the China Communist. As a consequence, some members of the Tong Shan She fled to Taiwan and other Asian countries. By means of the contrivance of Mr. Huang Jeng Sheng and other great seniors, the Tian Yi Xiang Hao Zhuo Shan Tang inherited the spirit of the China Tong Shan She and regenerated in Taiwan. The Tian Yi Xiang Hao Zhuo Shan Tang revitalized Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism as a trinity which represents an existence of threefold significant regilous philosophies in modern Chinese cultural circle. Ullambana Sutra ritual has been set up as an annual custom event of the Tong Shan She. The mode of its ceremonials and music was based on《Confucian Analects》. Ullambana Sutra ritual has always been held at the residence of a friend of same belief at Sanzhi District in New Taipei City in recent years. The whole ritual still follows ancient tradition in early times, owing to the place limitation, only the ceremonials and music of Confusion mode is adapted nowadays. The aspect of ritual seems not prosperous as that Confusion mode, the Buddhism mode and the Taoism mode held together at the same time in every province in China. Drawing upon the cultural viewpoints and its two main purposes, the present study explores the Confusion mode music in three aspects: the etiquette music, the ceremonial music and the penitent music employed in the Ullambana Sutra ritual. In addition, the present study illuminates the significance of the trinity of the Tian Yi Xiang Hao Zhuo Shan Tang by means of analyzing the ceremonials and music of Ullambana Sutra ritual.

Abstract Herbs are very popular in clinical especially in the usage of preventing the recurrence of cancer in Taiwan. The benefit of herbs was low side effects, low price and easy to used compared to current immune therapy but the question come if the herbs really have an effect of reducing cancer, lack of scientific research was a common answer. So it is important for us to test the usage of herbs in increasing our immune system and reduce cancer in a animal test model. The paper uses DBA/2 mice by injecting L5178Y Cancer cell epidermally. After inducing the formation of the tumor , we remove the tumor form the injection site and then inject L5178Y into the abdominal cavity of the mice. By creating a balance amount between the tumor cell and the mice’s immune system, to be cancer dormancy. Herbs (Bu-zhong-yi-Qi-Tan) was fed to the mice for over 7 days. And then some amount of the ascites (partial peritoneal larvage, PPL) was taken from the abdominal cavity of the mice. Then analysis the PPL to test the amount of the L5178Y tumor cell count and the difference of CD-4 and CD-8 and the difference of the NK cell and the amount of Macrophage by using Flow Cytometry. The result was the amount of L5178Y decrease and the amount of CD-4 increases, and no difference was found between the control group which was fed only with normal saline. The result by using animal test model has conclude that herbs was effective in the treatment of cancer dormancy in increase the T-cell immune system and reduce the cancer cell level. So the Bu-zhong-Yi-Qi-Tan was effective in a immune therapy. The animal test model could play a way to check the immunity system.

Diao Yuan Hu Ke’s Yuan zhu zhi yu xue chuang tan yi was one of the wenyan zhiguai fictions of short stories in Ming Dynasty. There were totally thirty stories in this book. The book was separated into two parts: the first part comprised sixteen stories and the second part included fourteen stories. Among these thirty stories, Tianfudianjulu and Dengyaoyehualu had lost their contents and only remained the titles. In the early history of Chinese literature and classical fictions, there was little discussion on Yuan zhu zhi yu xue chuang tan yi because it was a rare and uncommon fiction that few people would know. Nevertheless, according to the information and materials we have now, after Yuan zhu zhi yu xue chuang tan yi was published, more than twenty-five stories were included in the books such as Hushicuibian, Guosetianxiang, Xiuguchunrong, Wanjingqinglin, Yanjubiji, Guang Yan Yi Bian, Xu Yan Yi Bian, History of Love, Gujinqingtanwanxuan, and You han bai bian, which showed that Yuan zhu zhi yu xue chuang tan yi was really a popular fiction during the time. However, the original version of Yuan zhu zhi yu xue chuang tan yi had long been disregarded and was lost for more than four hundred years. Not until the end of twentieth century was the book re-published and re-proofread by Jilin University Press and Zhonghua Bookstore and therefore the book could be continued passing to the generation again. Thereafter, Zhonghua editorial department again tried to look for two lost stories, Tianfudianjulu and Dengyaoyehualu, inferring that “Toutaoji” in Guang Yan Yi Bian and “Dengshenyehua” in Gujinqingtanwanxuan should be the lost tales. For these reasons, when the book was republished again, the details of these two stories were given in Appendix at the end of the book. That is to say, readers now could see the complete thirty stories in Yuan zhu zhi yu xue chuang tan yi. The book was written by the background of Jiaxing and through the people and things in Jiaxing, Diao Yuan Hu Ke in his book used metaphors and analogies to praise and criticize on the basis of indoctrination, exhortation, and moralizing. In other words, it was really a fiction filled with local color and promoting virtues and punishing evils. There are six chapters in the thesis. The first chapter illustrates the motivation and research goals and reviews the related literary papers of Diao Yuan Hu Ke and Yuan zhu zhi yu xue chuang tan yi in order to see how critics has investigated it. The chapter also demonstrates the methods and outline of the thesis. Furthermore, through the identity of Diao Yuan Hu Ke, historical background, and the situation of how Yuan zhu zhi yu xue chuang tan yi is included in other books and the year of publication, the second chapter goes on to undertake a more complete research on and explanation for the book. The third chapter mainly focuses on the analysis of the stories in Yuan zhu zhi yu xue chuang tan yi. According to the synopsis of stories, the book can be divided into three kinds of topics involving love, warning, and praise in songs. The fourth chapter looks into the details of characters shaping in Yuan zhu zhi yu xue chuang tan yi so as to summarize the typical characters that Diao Yuan Hu Ke aims to present and moreover addresses the narrative point of view, the performance of poetry, as well as the ideological contents of the topics that the book wishes to express for its readers. The following chapter continues to discuss the situation of a historical transition that forms a bridge between earlier and later stages. It first investigates the origins of the stories in order to have the in-depth understanding of inheritance and innovation of the stories. Besides, the chapter also tried to compare the similarities and differences between the earlier and later development and extension of the stories. Then, the chapter goes on to see how Diao Yuan Hu Ke weeds through the old to bring forth the new based on the original stories of similar themes to present the different types of stories. After that, this chapter steps forward to do the research on the circumstances of how Yuan zhu zhi yu xue chuang tan yi could influence the writing of fictions in the late Ming and early Qing Dynasty. In conclusion, according to the previous five chapters, the sixth chapter aims to summarize the results and contribution of this study, confirm the value and particularity of Yuan zhu zhi yu xue chuang tan yi, regard Yuan zhu zhi yu xue chuang tan yi as a link to carry on the past heritage and open up the future in the history of Chinese fictions, and moreover indicate its all-out effort to promote the local culture during the time.

The study aims to provide suggestions for improving school management development based on the study results. The Kano’s model was used to analyze the reasons of determining which school to attend for parents to choose based on quality factors in Lan Tan Junior High School in Chia Yi City, Taiwan. A group of 192 randomly selected participants were interviewed for data analysis along with the literature review, using environment equipment, school performance, public relationship, teachers, and care as the five aspects with 21 elements to analyze the results. The results have shown that up to 17 factors, such as A1-A4, B1, C1-C4, D1-D4, and E2-E5, were categorized by parents as One-dimensional quality factors. The above 17 factors represent the indicators that the parents valued the most which means that they are essential and should be highly noticed. The B2-B4 and E1 were categorized as Attractive Quality. It was suggested that school should invest on these four indicators more. For example, planning “adaptive grouping and pedagogical arrangement,” providing “multiple after school activities,” collecting “Outstanding graduates’ grades and social performance,” and advertising. The qualified remedial activities provides parents and students more learning opportunities. If the school can be equipped with the above four indicators, it would make the school more appealing and attractive.

This research focuses on the area of Li Yu Tan Village in San Yi Town. Due to its unique geographic location, this area appears to have more diversified ethnic groups compared with other areas in the San Yi Town, notwithstanding the majority Hakka population. The prevalence of Hakka language has gradually declined as the Hakka people started to come into contact with other ethnic groups in San Yi Town, leading towards bilingualism. This phenomenon is particularly conspicuous in Li Yu Tan Village. The aim of this research, hence, is to understand the influence of the bilingual phenomenon on the language use of the local Hakka People, including Hakka language proficiency, language choice and language attitude. The research also explores the impact of this phenomenon on the ethnic identity of the local Hakka people (including ethnic self-identification, ethnic attitude, ethnic awareness and ethnic involvement). A further analysis is made on the correlation between language use and Hakka identity. Equal emphasis is placed on the qualitative and quantitative approaches for this study. Various methodologies are adopted to achieve the objectives of the research, including literature review, questionnaire survey and in-depth interview. The research reveals that the Hakka people in the Li Yu Tan Village are mostly bilingual, with the younger generations being more inclined to communicate in Mandarin or Fukienese, as they are less familiar with the Hakka language. This results in speech accommodation, i.e., the shift of language use from Hakka to Mandarin and Fukienese. In terms of Hakka identity, the Hakka residents of Li Yu Tan Village, in general, identify themselves as part of the Hakka group and the younger the residents are, the lower the Hakka identity is while the older Hakka people, conversely, share a higher ethnic identity. However, the older Hakka generations are concerned that, with time and environment changes, their descendents may even forget their mother tongue and lose their Hakka identity altogether. Moreover, with regard to the correlation between language use and Hakka identity, the questionnaire results show that there is a significant positive correlation. In other words, higher frequency Hakka language use leads to higher Hakka identity. Conversely, lower level use of the Hakka language results in lower Hakka identity. The results of the in-depth interview, however, suggest that, while some of the interviewees do not speak Hakka, the next-generation will still maintain their Hakka identity, due to blood ties. This phenomenon seems to suggest that there is no direct relationship between the use of the Hakka language and ethnic identity among the Hakka people. Some of the interviewees also address the issue of alteration of generations. From a diachronic perspective, therefore, the Hakka group in Li Yu Tan Village will have the risk of gradual diminishing of their ethnic identity as a result of reduced use of the Hakka language.

Abstract In densely populated Taiwan, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) is an important daily necessity. LPG is an useful energy not only for daily life purposes such as bathing, cooking, but also for the industrial purposes such as industrial boilers burning, therefore public people almost need LPG by twenty-four hours. However, when LPG restored tank fires, it often causes serious casualties and property losses. In addition, the impact of LPG tank fire disaster is large-scale, instead of general fire only confined in localized fire region. It is necessary to evacuate many people due to the large-scale disaster, so the impact of that on traffic and economic is more serious than general fires. In this thesis, the risk factors of the LPG filling plant are analyzed in detail, and it is discussed about the legal and practical planning for fire management, staff training, and on-site equipment setting. In order to provide completely solution for fire prevention and rescue, the fire rescue of LPG tanks is also investigated, including the early stage of notification mechanism and on-site personnel rescue operation, the late stage of firefighter rescue operation. This study provides not only the current LPG tank fire prevention and rescue but also as a reference for future researchers, and it is expecting to upgrade fire fighting force to ensure that the public life and property safety.

This research uses historical, geographical, anthropological methods, covering four Tung-an people''''s lineage organizations along Tai-shui R. as Yen-lou Li, Yueh-shan Li, His-ting Chen, and Kuo-tzu-yi-hui, to analysis the differences of their member groups'''' territories for elaborating the society meaning of Tung-an people''''s lineage organizations. The following points emerge from this study: (1) Yan-lou Li has own four member groups. The territories of these groups cover the region between Tan-shui R. and Chi-lung R. and go into the mountain area of Pei-tou. This area is developed by the industries of the earlier period. (2) Yueh-shan Li has own seven member groups. The territories of these groups cover the lower stretch of Tai-shui R.. Tung-an people have the superior position in this area. In addition, the cross-river ferries belong to the same group could be proved that they were in the same living sphere in the past. (3) His-ting Chen has own eight member groups. Commercial villages along the middle stretch of Tai-shui R. set up in the range of the groups'''' territories. Besides, the qualification of members is not necessary nowadays. (4) Kuo-tzu-yi-hui has own four big member groups. And nineteen small member groups are included. This organization is difference from traditional lineage organizations by several places: Some groups are organized by Chang-chou people, and they manage the organization by parliamentary system. The Fu-chou-tsai Wang is also described in this study. It is another kind of Tung-an people''''s lineage organizations along Tan-shui R. In this kind, The member groups won have religious activities with other Tung-an people. Comparing the difference with those member groups will promote our understanding of Tung-an people''''s lineage organizations. According to the traditional ancestor worship ceremonies, we could find out the social meaning of Chinese immigrant society structure: each territory of member groups create the "point" of Tung-an people hamlet. And these "points" can be organize to lots "lines" by the activities of ancestor worship. Finally, these "lines" will compose a living sphere by the same lineage groups.
