Texto completoThe present research was born with the objective of evaluating the impact that the economic and social resources of the parties had on the criminal proceedings celebrated by the court of podestà in Vercelli, and the effects that belonging to a certain social segment could have on the physiognomy and the quality of the crimes committed, both in the city and in the surrounding countryside. These questions led the analysis to focus on the judicial documentation produced in the city between the seventies of the fourteenth century and the forties of the following century, using it as a lens for observing the society of the time, and the conflicts within it once brought to the benches of the city judges. Based on the direction given to the research, the spectrum of investigation was then widened to include notarial sources and the acts of the city council, with the intention of gathering as much information as possible on the subjects involved in the different phases of the judicial dispute. Thanks to the data collected, a database was created containing the personal profiles of about 3000 individuals, from the city and the villages of the countryside, who appeared in court as both suspects and victims. In order to fully understand the social aspects of public justice, the reflection has, at first, focused on the ambivalent role assumed by the process, on the one hand as a device of legitimation of power, and on the other as a tool available to the parties for the management of conflict. The ways in which social background, available capital and networks of personal acquaintances could impact on criminal practices, influencing the trial skills of the subjects involved and, consequently, the final judgment of the city magistrates, have than been analyzed. Private individuals, in fact, had at their disposal a wide range of solutions to try to obtain justice, but the clientelistic and financial resources in their possession could prove decisive in choosing which delatory channel to exploit. After the start of the investigation, the social extraction of the suspects or actors was able to considerably influence the procedural strategy adopted by them, allowing them to exploit the time extensions granted by the notice to obtain an advantage in the judicial dispute; for instance, turning to a prosecutor for the formulation of the defense and to avoid, if possible, ending up under torture. After framing the procedural schemes and their sensitivity to the socio-economic resources of the parties, a section was devoted to the subjects that moved around the court bench. The recruitment channels and the social extraction of both the seigniorial officials and those of local appointment have therefore been studied, and attention has been devoted to those figures who, after being introduced into the dispute by the parties, intervened in the process, as guarantors, to prevent it from clogging, or, as attorneys, to consciously try to block it. Finally, a reading of delinquency from a social point of view has been proposed to highlight the incidence of the most debated criminal categories in the different social contexts. The guidelines of both physical and verbal offenses, thefts and subversive actions, have therefore been analyzed, focusing on the protagonists of violent actions and on how the belonging to different social segments could impact the forms assumed by the assaults. The image returned by the judicial papers is that of a lively community, crossed by continuous tensions, where the networks of personal acquaintances and the degree of insertion in the community, as well as the economic resources available, weighed considerably on the management of the dispute before the city authorities and on the forms through which this conflict could be expressed.

Texto completoThe purpose of this research is the reconstruction of the Lungarni (banks of the River Arno) in Pisa in the Late Middle Age (XIV-XV century). The study aims to emphasize the urban transformation that changed the face of Pisa over time and to remember that the banks of the river had a very important role as commercial and economic center of gravity of the city, a vocation which has largely lost in the modern and contemporary times. The methodology, refined and perfected during the participation to the project Nu.M.E. (New Electronic Museum of the city of Bologna), is based on the analysis and comparison of diverse but complementary sources, including previous essays in urban history, collection of medieval documentation (administrative measures as the Charters of the town of Pisa, but also descriptions of chroniclers and travelers), iconographic sources, including maps and views produced in XVI century and later, and material sources, such as persistences still observable within the medieval buildings and artefacts found during some archaeological excavations. The 3D model is not conceived as static and "closed", but it is a free roaming 3D environment; this product can be allocated to different levels of users, including both scholars and specialists interested in learning more about the subject and in further research, both ordinary citizens interested in history and younger users, as students of high and middle schools.

Texto completoThe research project is composed of two main parts: the first one consists of a corpus of shipbuilding texts from several fifteenth-century zibaldoni of the Venetian area, the second part is composed by the systematic study of their technical naval vocabulary. The texts composing the corpus are collections of rules for the construction of certain types of boats, labeled as raxon de fabricar. This texts are collected in merchant notebooks and zibaldoni which contain a considerable amount of heterogeneous materials, spacing from lunar calendars or medical prescriptions, to mathematical problems and rates. From this corpus we obtained the list of entry words, in particular each headword presents: a) a first section about the history of the word in ancient Italian and Venetian, aiming to create an enhancing tool about the medieval maritime lexical heritage, recovering words not otherwise attested and providing new data related to the history of the known lexical material; b) a second section dedicated to the comparison of documented words in the western Mediterranean with the aim of emphasizing the lexical correspondences between the Venetian, Catalan, Provençal and Genoese naval vocabularies.

Texto completoThis research project aims to shed light on the spice trade in the Middle Ages, starting from the precious data contained in the custom registers of Bologna (1388-1448). These documents were used to report any goods (related to the so-called "dazio della mercanzia") that crossed Bologna, and then continued to other destinations, especially Florence. As for spices, Bologna was an important hub in order to connect the main emporiums of the Adriatic Sea (first of all Venice) with the markets of Tuscany, such as Florence or Pisa, from where the spices sailed – thanks to the port of Porto Pisano – to other European regions, such as France, England, the Iberian Peninsula and Flanders. The daily, monthly, annual and total quantities of spices found in these registers are undoubtedly unexpected: a product traditionally described by historians as rare, precious and difficult to distribute in Europe, passed through Bologna with surprising constancy and reaching very high volumes. The daily, monthly, annual and total quantities of spices are undoubtedly unexpected: a product traditionally described by historians as rare, precious and hard to get to Europe, passed through Bologna with surprising constancy and reaching very high volumes. Considering that Bologna, despite its importance on the Italian scene, was still a "minor" crossroads in the complex commercial networks on which spices used to circulate (such as the great maritime routes, for example), these high quantities of spices lead us to reflect on what has been said so far about the spice trade in the Middle Ages. By combining the traditional historiographical method with an "empirical" approach, which takes into account the material and organoleptic characteristics of spices, it is possible to reopen the debate around this topic, which still has much to offer to food history research.

Texto completoThe thesis aims to highlight the merits of some exegetes of Seneca's Tragoediae of the 14th-15th centuries. The first part proposes a new critical edition of the argumenta of the Tragoediae by Pietro da Moglio. The second part traces, first of all, the tradition of the Tragoediae up to their rediscovery at the beginning of the 14th century. It then dwells on the reception by Petrarch and Boccaccio, and highlights Giovanni del Virgilio's knowledge of the Tragoediae, evoked in passages from his works that are analysed and compared with Petrarch's studies. The critical text of da Moglio's argumenta is reported with translation and commentary, analysing its wide circulation. It proposes the edition with translation and commentary of the texts on the Tragoediae written by Lorenzo Ridolfi when he was a pupil of Coluccio Salutati and had met Domenico Bandini. After collecting the manuscripts of Bartolomeo del Regno's works, the focus is on a volume of the Tragoediae based on one of his codices and with unpublished contents. Hypotheses are put about Petrus Y. Parmensis on the basis of the glosses of a manuscript of the Tragoediae copied and annotated by him, and the text-miniatures relationship of this and other codices is examined. After reviewing the books of Francesco da Fiano and Francesco Piendibeni, the edition of the former's commentary on the Bucolicum carmen is hoped for - highlighting references to the Tragoediae in his works - as the edition of Piendibeni's notes to tragic Seneca. It highlights the Bolognese origin of Salutati's interest in the Tragoediae, which he copied in his youth and provided with notes, the edition of which is hoped for. Passages of the Epistolario and De laboribus Herculis that are indebted to the Tragoediae are presented, hoping for an analysis.

Texto completoThe research project is aimed at dealing with the female condition in Sicily in the early medieval period, through notary documentation from the monasteries of San Nicolo' l'Arena in Catania and of Santa Maria in Licodia. From the unpublished documentation, which is different in its typology but harmonious in its juridical criteria in drafting, I want to portray the physiognomy of the woman according to the social role adopted in the family as wife, mother, daughter or widow, in relation to the management of patrimonial goods.
