Resumen
The article is devoted to the problem of transition in Ancient Greece from oral culture to written one. Most foreign and domestic researchers associate the duration and instability of this transition with 1) peculiarities of organizing the political power, 2) the anthropomorphic specifics of Greek culture. The author proposes to analyze applying oral and written communications in the key works of such ancient Greek writers as Homer (Iliad, Odyssey), Hesiod (Theogony), Aeschylus (Petitioner), Aristophanes (Birds), as well as philosophical works of Plato (Fedr). It is established that the Ancient Greek authors, despite the possession of writing, guided in their works on oral communication and such forms of confidence in oral communication as personal testimony, religious oath, reinforcing all this belief in a possible religious punishment. As a result, the Ancient Greek authors either ignore or portray as secondary written communication in the absence of specially created institutional forms of trust. The author proposes an original hypothesis, in the context of which he explains this phenomenon by the inability of institutional forms of confidence created for oral communications to perform its function in the transition to written communications and «slows down» the transition process. The author’s hypothesis is based on the theory of documentary information, in which context the final transition to written communications was completed only after the creation of institutional forms of confidencein written communications in the form of archives and libraries.

Resumen
The article is devoted to the problem of transition from oral to written culture in Ancient Greece. Most foreign and Russian researchers associate the duration and instability of this transition, firstly, with some features of power organization in the city-states, in which Greek citizens had to exercise their rights themselves — narrow specialization was condemned; and, secondly, with the anthropomorphic specificity of Greek culture. The article analyzes the use of oral and written communications in the major works of a number of ancient Greek writers: Homer (“Iliad”, “Odyssey”), Hesiod (“Theogony”), Aeschylus (“The Suppliants”), Aristophanes (“The Birds”), as well as in the philosophical works of Plato (“Phaedrus”).The article specifies that ancient Greek authors, despite the possession of writing, rely in their works on oral communications and on such forms of ensuring trust in oral communication as personal testimony, religious oath, reinforcing all this with a belief in potential religious punishment. As a result, the ancient Greek authors (in the absence of specially created institutional forms of trust) either ignore written communications or depict them as secondary. Therefore, this article aims to explain the distrustful attitude of the Greeks to writing at an early stage. The author proposes an original hypothesis, within the context of which this phenomenon is explained by inability of the institutional forms of trust, created for oral communication, to perform their function during the transition to written communications, which “hindered” the transition process. The author’s hypothesis is based on the theory of documentary information. The article concludes that the final transition to written communications was completed only after the creation of institutional forms of ensuring trust in written communications, in the form of archives and libraries.

Resumen
Abstract In the existing literature, no attempt has been made to inspect how men and women rhetorically manage their gratitude communications in the academic written discourse. To bridge this knowledge gap, the present article examined how students of different gender construct their thanking acts in the acknowledgements of their M.A. theses. Discrepancies between male and female postgraduates’ employment of linguistic patterns and gratitude themes were compared. The results showed that student writers’ gratitude communications to a certain extent are conditioned by the conventional rhetorical patterns of the academic genre. Remarkable gender variations were evidenced in the students’ selections of lexical items for encoding the thanking expressions, thanking modifiers, and gratitude themes of their acknowledgements. These gender discrepancies in gratitude communications are highly pertinent to the social expectations of masculinity and femininity, the students’ psychological orientations toward the emotion of thanking and their own value priorities.

Numerous studies have shown that the predominant activity for white collar work is communication. Much interpersonal communication depends upon nonverbal cues; these are significantly reduced or lost by electronic media (e.g., electronic mail). This study explored a possibility for maintaining interpersonal rapport while using information technology. Using Neurolinguistic Programming concepts, an analysis of written and spoken sensory predicate patterns was conducted. Sensory predicates were detected in both electronic and oral communications. The results hold promise for increased interpersonal rapport by automating the matching of predicates in electronic messages.

Resumen
A subfield of artificial intelligence is that of natural language processing and sentiment analysis. The interest in sentiment analysis has increased with the development of the internet and web 2.0. With sentiment analysis it is possible to analyse the sentiment or emotions of written communication through dictionary-based sentiment analysis or machine learning algorithms. However, sentiment analysis also holds the potential of supporting people with disadvantages in interpreting the nuances in written communication. One such group is autistic people. The aim of the study is to examine autistic peoples’ perceptions of important design factors and functionality for an application with sentiment analysis to support emotional navigation in written communication. This study has been conducted with the first steps of design science to outline the requirements of a potential application that can support autistic people to navigate the emotions in written communication with sentiment analysis. The problem to be addressed was identified through related research and one of authors’ own experience of navigating written communications with autism. The requirements for the application were the main focus for this study and has been the primarily concern for data collection. Data have been collected through semi-structured interviews with autistic people and analysed with thematic analysis. Results of the study provide several important recommendations for the design of applications with sentiment analysis to support autistic people navigate the emotions in written communication. The study further provides an understanding of autistic peoples’ needs when navigating written communication. These findings can be used by researchers and developers to design support-applications with autistic peoples’ needs in the centre. An interesting next step of research would be to develop a prototype with the findings of this study addressed in the application’s functionality and design, which could then be evaluated on a larger scale.

Resumen
Blogs as an alternative media are now widely used as a medium for telling stories. During the Covid-19 pandemic, there were many stories told by the mass media. However, because the mass media cannot be separated from the goals of capitalism, the information given about Covid-19 often frightens the public. Different stories are offered by the blog authors, who present various interesting stories in this time of the pandemic. This study looks at how family resilience narratives appear in parenting blogs written by mommies. This research used qualitative approach and qualitative content analysis. The object of research is articles related to Covid-19 written by 10 mommy bloggers. The findings show that the articles they write tell three key processes in family resilience, namely the family belief system, family organizational patterns and the communication that occurs in families.

Given that participants’ experiences in clinical trials include a variety of communication touchpoints with clinical trial staff, these communications should be designed in a way that enhances the participant experience by paying attention to the self-determination theoretical concepts of competence, autonomy, and relatedness. In this feature, we argue that clinical trial teams need to consider the importance of how they design their written participant communication materials, and we explain in detail the process our multidisciplinary team took to design written materials for the patient and family caregiver participants in our Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD) screening trial. This article concludes with suggested guidance and steps for other clinical trial teams.

Dialogue journal writing is a way of communicating with the learners through constant written communication over a specified period. Since the teachers who use the dialogue journals do not require their students to be grammatically accurate in their expressions while they are writing journals, the students build their self-confidence. Consequently, they can increase their writing fluency, which ultimately leads to not only the development of writing but also overall language proficiency of the language they are learning. More importantly, it develops learners’ theoretical thinking as they are involved in dialogic discussions through written interactive communications. It is because as per Vygotskyan theory of human development human beings are constantly engaged in interpersonal as well as intrapersonal communications, which expand learners’ zones of proximal development.Journal of NELTA Surkhet Vol. 5 January, 2018, Page: 1-14

Abstract The entry into force of new laws governing electronic communications pose new challenges to electronic communication with the judiciary authorities and arise practical issues with its proof. The following article aims to summarize the results of theoretical and practical analysis of the current legal framework on the proof of electronic communications in our country and its regulation in the Tax and Social Insurance Procedure Code. In legal theory, there is a common understanding about the document and its essence, as a means of proof and it is that the document is a thing on which with the written or electronic symbol it is a materialized statement. The electronic document is a means of proof which, by virtue of law, has the same (equal) evidentiary effect, as the written document. The evidentiary effect of the document does not depend on whether the document is written or electronic, but whether it is accompanied by the signature of its author and, above all, the capacity of the publisher compiling the document

Abstract The approximation of the pragmatic knowledge of English language learners to native speakers has been a realm of concern for the scholars and researchers in applied linguistics. Thus, this research was an endeavor to figure out the association between the proficiency level and politeness strategies and external/internal modifications in written communication skills in the speech act of requests in Iranian English language learners. To this end, a written Discourse Completion Test (DCT), adapted from Rose (1994), including 8 situations was administered to elicit data from Iran Language Institute120 female and male EFL learners, 60 upper-intermediate and 60 intermediate. The data were sorted out using Brown and Levinson’s politeness strategies taxonomy (Brown and Levinson 1987) and external/internal modifications developed by Faerch and Kasper (1989). The written request utterances provided by each participant were analyzed in terms of frequency and types of politeness strategies, namely, positive, negative, bald on record, and off-record as well as external/internal modifications utilized in requests. The Pearson Chi-Square test results revealed that there was a statistically significant difference between upper-intermediate and intermediate learners’ type of politeness strategies and external/internal modifications.

The tools described in film theory are used to invoke feelings in the viewer as a form of entertainment. Some of these tools apply more directly to chatbots than others. Film combines visual images, music, and dialog to accomplish its goals. Conversing with a chatbot is akin to using a telegraph, or instant messaging on a cell phone. However, written communication may still convey emotions and feelings that people interpret on their own as they chat. It is useful to speak of the emotional content of written communications using film theory terminology.

Qualitative online inquiries are being used more and more but their use has been little methodologically refined so far. This is already true for a systematic differentiation between asynchronous/synchronous and oral/written varieties of communication and their specific benefits when we use them as qualitative research instruments. In this note, we focus on the methodological benefits of asynchronous online communication between absent communication partners with a time lag. Before doing so, we discriminate between synchrony and asynchrony in (human) social interaction and arrange them on a continuum of decreasing action cues and conceptual speech elements.

Resumen
Introduction. The aim of this research is to define what role continuous assessment plays in foreign language teaching. We analysed some of the most frequent communication and language mistakes by our research sample students in their written communications at the B2 level. We believe these correlations have yet to be closely studied in the context of the foreign language teaching process since there is a significant increase in the number of international students entering Slovak universities for programs implemented in the Slovak language. We also researched the current interest of our non-Slovak university students in verifying Slovak language competencies through ECL testing compared to the period before 2019 in correlation with their writing skills preparation. Materials and Methods. Our research sample included 200 randomly selected written communications by firstyear international students of our University in the period of 2019‒2022 in various fields of study at the age scale from 17 to 42. The students were from Russia, Serbia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Belarus, Ukraine, and the Czech Republic. We applied content analysis of the written communications concerning the most frequent mistakes from the morphological, syntactic and writing-accuracy points of view. We also used statistical methods to research the current interest in verifying foreign language competencies through ECL testing on the side of our international students. Results. The results delivered that the most frequent errors are typographical, mainly related to spelling, punctuation and paraphrasing; therefore, we can claim that in the Slovak language learning, it is significantly beneficial to focus on formal correctness, i.e. consistent acquisition of the Slovak language grammar system. We also identified the sociolinguistic adequacy of written communication problematic, i.e. style, clear statements formulations, and adherence to the text composition. The results also demonstrated the increase in our international university studentsʼ interest in verifying foreign language competencies through ECL testing compared to the period before 2019. Discussion and Conclusion. From the results it follows that teaching writing skills intensively with a focus on particularly identified problematic issues in written communications increases the learnersʼ language acquisition level. This study presents results that may be useful in the targeted language preparation of the international students recruited to Slovak universities as their home universities and their further preparation for undertaking Slovak language proficiency official verification. In addition, the results of our study may contribute to the further development of general professional education in foreign languages.

The quality of written communication between psychiatrists and general practitioners has become increasingly important, with the introduction of the Access to Health Records Act as well as with demands placed by the purchasers of psychiatric services. We investigated if a hospital-based audit could be used to monitor the quality of written communications with general practitioners, and if ‘closing the audit loop’ could improve the standards. We found that audit may have helped improve standards, particularly in making letters less potentially offensive and easier to read by non-psychiatrists. A method of measuring the quality of letters is described.

Abstract The Covid-19 pandemic showed forcefully the fundamental importance broadband data communication and the internet has in our society. Optical communications forms the undisputable backbone of this critical infrastructure, and it is supported by an interdisciplinary research community striving to improve and develop it further. Since the first ‘Roadmap of optical communications’ was published in 2016, the field has seen significant progress in all areas, and time is ripe for an update of the research status. The optical communications area has become increasingly diverse, covering research in fundamental physics and materials science, high-speed electronics and photonics, signal processing and coding, and communication systems and networks. This roadmap describes state-of-the-art and future outlooks in the optical communications field. The article is divided into 20 sections on selected areas, each written by a leading expert in that area. The sections are thematically grouped into four parts with 4–6 sections each, covering, respectively, hardware, algorithms, networks and systems. Each section describes the current status, the future challenges, and development needed to meet said challenges in their area. As a whole, this roadmap provides a comprehensive and unprecedented overview of the contemporary optical communications research, and should be essential reading for researchers at any level active in this field.

Resumen
Purpose The effect of different formats of message delivery has received little theoretical and empirical examination. This research focuses on the effect of written relational communication formats used by service providers. This study aims to answer three questions: Do different formats of written communications (i.e. handwriting and print) influence customer perceptions (i.e. feelings of warmth) of service firms? What are the mediators of these influences (i.e. perceived effort and psychological closeness)? And under what conditions do they occur (i.e. what is the contextual factor)? Design/methodology/approach One field study and three laboratory studies were conducted to provide a comprehensive understanding of the role of format in written communication. Findings Handwritten messages are more effective than print messages in building relationships in a service context because they elicit stronger feelings of warmth because of both the perception of greater effort and feelings of greater psychological closeness to the service provider. However, the presence of handwriting fails to deliver feelings of warmth when the quality of core services is low. Practical implications Service providers can effectively use handwritten communication to signal effort and create psychological closeness for relationship building with their key customers only when the quality of core services meets customer expectations. Originality/value First, the research differentiates the formats of written relational communication (handwritten vs print), and links communication formats with feelings of warmth, which is an important factor for impression and relationship formation in the practice of services marketing. Second, based on cognitive-experiential self-theory, this research demonstrates the dual mediators underlying the effect of handwriting (vs print) on warmth: perceived effort and psychological closeness. Third, it identifies the quality of core service as a boundary condition for the effect of handwritten communication.

Resumen
The article analyzes the peculiarities of Hrihorii Skovoroda's intellectual communications, based on the materials of his correspondence with secular and church elites. It is noted that the epistolary legacy of Skovoroda as a student of the Kyiv-Mohyla Academy, reflects the basic principles of the educational process of this institution. The writer's correspondence known today includes more than 125 letters, the largest part of which is correspondence with M. Kovalynskyi (79 letters). Analysis of H. Skovoroda's correspondence allows us to single out certain features of it: 1). Household details and biographical aspects occupy an insignificant place in the letters, their main content is philosophical and ethical ideas and instructional instructions. 2). Almost all ancient Greek mythology is present in the letters. The thinker often compared his friends with ancient characters. 3). The educator's correspondence contains a lot of poetical inserts, which later became part of separate collections. 4). Letters are written, as a rule, in a mixed (hybrid) language, most often it is a combination of Russian, Latin and Greek. It is emphasized that the epistolary heritage of H. Skovoroda demonstrates the activities of the Kharkiv Collegium as an eloquent example of active contacts between Ukrainian church and secular elites. Sources reveal close personal and written communication of H. Skovoroda with many spiritual persons involved in the collegium: Archimandrite Hervasii Yakubovych, Rector Iov Bazylevych, Prefect Lavrentii Kordet and especially with the Bishop of Belgorod and Oboyan Ioasaf Mytkevych. In general, H. Skovoroda's correspondence with secular and spiritual persons, representatives of the academic school of the Kyiv-Mohyla Academy, is an indicative manifestation of the functioning of the "Mohyla intellectual space".

Resumen
Written journals, as a means of enhancing communication between teachers and students, are espoused quite extensively in the literature. But on the university level, where classes do not usually meet every day, the rate of exchange of the journals between an instructor and his or her students can be slowed considerably, thus limiting the benefits usually associated with this form of communication. To increase the exchange rate of journals, it was proposed that electronic mail be utilized as the medium by which the journal entries were transmitted. Eighty students in three sections of a general education required computer literacy course participated in this study. Results from the study found that the students who used electronic journals wrote significantly longer entries than the students who wrote in traditional written journals. No differences were found, though, between treatment groups as to computer-related knowledge and attitudes.

Resumen
In our time, the written language is undergoing significant changes, which is associated with the emergence of new technology, equipped with special tools for remote communication. With the help of gadgets, you can send a message at any time without making any efforts, however, this communication format is increasingly reflected in the structure of the statements themselves: they are becoming shorter and more capacious in content, while regulatory requirements, as a rule, are not observed. With the emergence of the sphere of Internet communications we began to observe the transformation of the main types of communication: the boundaries between written and oral forms are increasingly blurred, which is especially clearly seen in the analysis of messages in blogs, chat rooms, on forums when discussing any legislative or regulatory acts. Internet communication is becoming a new form of perception of the general picture of the world, the language game predetermines the trajectory of changing the consciousness of Internet users. In order to identify problem areas in this area, a sociological study was carried out, the results of which are presented in the table.

Resumen
Communication tools such as email facilitate communication and collaboration between speakers of different languages, who use two primary strategies-English as a common language and machine translation (MT) tools-to help them overcome language barriers. However, each of these communication strategies creates its own challenges for cross-lingual communication. In this paper, we compare how people's interpretations of an email sender's social intention, and their evaluation of the email and the senders, differ when using a common language versus MT in email communication. We conducted an online experiment in which monolingual native English speakers read and rated request emails written by native English speakers, emails written by bilingual Chinese speakers in English, and emails written in Chinese then machine-translated into English. We found that participants interpreted the social intentions of the email sender less accurately for machine-translated emails than for emails written by non-native speakers in English. Participants also rated the senders and emails less positively overall for machine-translated emails compared to emails written by non-native speakers in English. Based on these findings, we suggest design possibilities that could better aid multilingual communication.

Resumen
The author attempts to identify the place for the language norms in the modern library verbal communications. The relevancy of this study is determined by the crisis of verbal communications in the society (overuse of slang, frivolous borrowings from foreign languages, decay of the language culture, using gadgets in interpersonal and business communications). The author concludes that verbal communication skills are needed to harmonize all communicative components, including language norms and speech culture. The findings of the monitoring survey of library verbal communications are presented. The level of command of the modern Russian language norms is identified for library and information specialists. It was found that the largest part of respondents had insufficient knowledge of language norms which affects their professional activity. The author analyzes orthoepical (pronouncing and articulatory) errors, violation of lexical, grammar (word-formation, morphological and syntactic) and stylistic norms of the Russian language, observance of orthographic and punctuation rules in the written speech. She argues that revealing the gaps helps to define the problems of librarians’ speech culture and to increase the efficiency of verbal communications in the professional library environment, in particular within the system of advanced training.

Resumen
<p>Virtual schooling is an increasing trend for secondary education. Research of the communication practices in virtual schools has provided a myriad of suggestions for virtual school policies. The purpose of this qualitative study was to investigate the activities and processes involved in the daily rituals of virtual school teachers and learners with the goal of determining how regular phone calls by teachers contributed to the work habits of students. Eight virtual teachers were observed attempting to contact more than 60 struggling learners. Phone conversations with 12 of these learners showed that teachers repeatedly attempted to help them. Eleven students were interviewed and indicated preferences for written communications. Ten additional teachers who were interviewed emphasized the difficulty they had in reaching students by phone and the lack of student responses to phone-call attempts. The teachers in the study provided additional data regarding their regular communication patterns. Archival records from more than 100 contact attempts showed that approximately 20% of the students responded to teacher phone calls and less than half of these students completed the work requested. The interview data revealed that teachers believe written communications or multiple forms of communication may be more effective than regular phone calls. Future research should extend current research by expanding on sample size and investigating alternate methods of communication. Further investigation of learner responses to phone calls and of nonresponsive students could add to this data.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p>

Resumen
This article conducted an in-depth bibliometric analysis of the communication education studies published over a given period in three leading academic journals. It also provides a good reference for future researchers engaged in studying or designing new curricula as well as being able to base decisions made about content issues related to communications education soundly upon empirical evidence. Many academic journals, including Journalism and Mass Communication Educator, Communication Education, and Communications Teacher provide channels for researchers in the field to publish empirical findings or new teaching methods; likewise allow academics at different levels with pedagogical interests to share their experiences. Journalism and Mass Communication Educator collects teaching materials on journalism and media, while followed by series of this publication now become publishes practical content written by communication preceptors. The comparisons of findings provided with respect to the three selected journals of Communication Education, Journalism and Mass Communication Educator, and Communication Teacher will help identify similarities and differences in publication trends of these journals’ literature. All three are characteristically experiencing an even upward trajectory of their yearly article count that attests to the buoyancy of communication education research.

Resumen
Code-switching is a linguist phenomenon that has drawn the attention and several debates on its reasons and attitudes towards it. Sometimes, young adults make use of code-switching to show off, while some use it as a method of practicing English. However, university students use code-switching by accident or even as a habit when communicating with their lecturers. There is little research on code-switching in oral communication between university students and teachers in Vietnam, but code-switching in written communication is rare. This qualitative research mainly uses observation communication between an English teacher and non-English major students of three different levels, from beginner to pre-intermediate. Through analyzing observation and intimately interviewing teachers, the results show that both students at lower and higher-level code switch and the frequency they code-switch with Vietnamese teacher is more often than with foreign teacher, and code-switching in written communication is more than in oral communication. The main reasons for this phenomenon include the cultural influence, intimacy between teacher and students, and the limited English vocabulary. Teacher and students switch between English and Vietnamese in the classroom and between Vietnamese and English in texting communication so that the communications happen smoothly and effectively.
