Resumen
The article is devoted to the problem of transition in Ancient Greece from oral culture to written one. Most foreign and domestic researchers associate the duration and instability of this transition with 1) peculiarities of organizing the political power, 2) the anthropomorphic specifics of Greek culture. The author proposes to analyze applying oral and written communications in the key works of such ancient Greek writers as Homer (Iliad, Odyssey), Hesiod (Theogony), Aeschylus (Petitioner), Aristophanes (Birds), as well as philosophical works of Plato (Fedr). It is established that the Ancient Greek authors, despite the possession of writing, guided in their works on oral communication and such forms of confidence in oral communication as personal testimony, religious oath, reinforcing all this belief in a possible religious punishment. As a result, the Ancient Greek authors either ignore or portray as secondary written communication in the absence of specially created institutional forms of trust. The author proposes an original hypothesis, in the context of which he explains this phenomenon by the inability of institutional forms of confidence created for oral communications to perform its function in the transition to written communications and «slows down» the transition process. The author’s hypothesis is based on the theory of documentary information, in which context the final transition to written communications was completed only after the creation of institutional forms of confidencein written communications in the form of archives and libraries.

Resumen
The article is devoted to the problem of transition from oral to written culture in Ancient Greece. Most foreign and Russian researchers associate the duration and instability of this transition, firstly, with some features of power organization in the city-states, in which Greek citizens had to exercise their rights themselves — narrow specialization was condemned; and, secondly, with the anthropomorphic specificity of Greek culture. The article analyzes the use of oral and written communications in the major works of a number of ancient Greek writers: Homer (“Iliad”, “Odyssey”), Hesiod (“Theogony”), Aeschylus (“The Suppliants”), Aristophanes (“The Birds”), as well as in the philosophical works of Plato (“Phaedrus”).The article specifies that ancient Greek authors, despite the possession of writing, rely in their works on oral communications and on such forms of ensuring trust in oral communication as personal testimony, religious oath, reinforcing all this with a belief in potential religious punishment. As a result, the ancient Greek authors (in the absence of specially created institutional forms of trust) either ignore written communications or depict them as secondary. Therefore, this article aims to explain the distrustful attitude of the Greeks to writing at an early stage. The author proposes an original hypothesis, within the context of which this phenomenon is explained by inability of the institutional forms of trust, created for oral communication, to perform their function during the transition to written communications, which “hindered” the transition process. The author’s hypothesis is based on the theory of documentary information. The article concludes that the final transition to written communications was completed only after the creation of institutional forms of ensuring trust in written communications, in the form of archives and libraries.

Resumen
Abstract In the existing literature, no attempt has been made to inspect how men and women rhetorically manage their gratitude communications in the academic written discourse. To bridge this knowledge gap, the present article examined how students of different gender construct their thanking acts in the acknowledgements of their M.A. theses. Discrepancies between male and female postgraduates’ employment of linguistic patterns and gratitude themes were compared. The results showed that student writers’ gratitude communications to a certain extent are conditioned by the conventional rhetorical patterns of the academic genre. Remarkable gender variations were evidenced in the students’ selections of lexical items for encoding the thanking expressions, thanking modifiers, and gratitude themes of their acknowledgements. These gender discrepancies in gratitude communications are highly pertinent to the social expectations of masculinity and femininity, the students’ psychological orientations toward the emotion of thanking and their own value priorities.

Resumen
Numerous studies have shown that the predominant activity for white collar work is communication. Much interpersonal communication depends upon nonverbal cues; these are significantly reduced or lost by electronic media (e.g., electronic mail). This study explored a possibility for maintaining interpersonal rapport while using information technology. Using Neurolinguistic Programming concepts, an analysis of written and spoken sensory predicate patterns was conducted. Sensory predicates were detected in both electronic and oral communications. The results hold promise for increased interpersonal rapport by automating the matching of predicates in electronic messages.

Resumen
A subfield of artificial intelligence is that of natural language processing and sentiment analysis. The interest in sentiment analysis has increased with the development of the internet and web 2.0. With sentiment analysis it is possible to analyse the sentiment or emotions of written communication through dictionary-based sentiment analysis or machine learning algorithms. However, sentiment analysis also holds the potential of supporting people with disadvantages in interpreting the nuances in written communication. One such group is autistic people. The aim of the study is to examine autistic peoples’ perceptions of important design factors and functionality for an application with sentiment analysis to support emotional navigation in written communication. This study has been conducted with the first steps of design science to outline the requirements of a potential application that can support autistic people to navigate the emotions in written communication with sentiment analysis. The problem to be addressed was identified through related research and one of authors’ own experience of navigating written communications with autism. The requirements for the application were the main focus for this study and has been the primarily concern for data collection. Data have been collected through semi-structured interviews with autistic people and analysed with thematic analysis. Results of the study provide several important recommendations for the design of applications with sentiment analysis to support autistic people navigate the emotions in written communication. The study further provides an understanding of autistic peoples’ needs when navigating written communication. These findings can be used by researchers and developers to design support-applications with autistic peoples’ needs in the centre. An interesting next step of research would be to develop a prototype with the findings of this study addressed in the application’s functionality and design, which could then be evaluated on a larger scale.

Dialogues are a central part of human society, and technological improvements only strengthen their use in more and more situations. Additional tools used to communicate from a distance allow the collection of large amounts of data, which can be used to produce various analyses and automatic systems.Conversational discourse analysis is a partial response to understand some aspects of language production in dialogues. It is used to characterize the different interactions between the messages of a dialogue, and thus highlight the different issues or identify the exchanges that are needed to solve the dialogue's main objectives.Discourse parsing is a challenging task. The high number of existing theories of discourse analysis shows that humans have a hard time defining discursive structures that model all possible interactions. This difficulty makes the production of annotated corpora expensive and the low amount of discursively annotated data makes the use of supervised learning algorithms impractical. In this thesis, I propose to produce representations of conversational discourse based on data that is partially annotated with discourse structures. The thesis is part of the DATCHA project which allowed me access to a large corpus of dialogues owned by the Orange company. This corpus allows us to explore different strategies in order to produce discourse representations: rely on an end-to-end model that predicts customer satisfaction; rely on dialogue acts to produce sentence embeddings; using supervised algorithms on an automatically enriched corpus

Resumen
The paper deals with the problem of out-of-class students’ independent work in information and communication learning environment based on cloud technologies. Results of appropriate survey among students of pedagogical university are discussed. The students answered the questions about systematicity of their learning activity and propositions for its improving. It is determined that the leading problems are needs in more careful instruction according to features of the task completing, insufficient experience in self-management, the lack of internal motivation. Most of all, students recommend to provide the tasks with detail instruction (oral or written) and to pay attention to careful planning the time that is necessary for full completion of the task. It is pointed that such complicated requirements can be satisfied only by complex use of information and communication technologies as well as the automated system of pedagogical diagnostics. Some requirements for management of students’ out-of-classroom independent work are formulated as a result of this discussion.

Resumen
Abstract. The article clarifies specific concepts of persuasion in media texts; describes new techniques of media influence based on materials of online publications; shows the role of expressive means of language and emotions in visual communication. In social communication, persuasive logos refer to meaningful words and thoughts conveyed through mass media and logically perceived as a reasonable persuasion to proper actions based on the principles of morality, ethics, and culture; informational and influential accents. In modern science (Philosophy, Psychology, Rhetoric, Linguistics), logos has acquired not only new meanings, but also has become an important concept of rational expression of free ideas, meanings, reflections. From this perspective, new media serve as the most concentrated source of logosphere and eidosphere creation, which should be thoroughly studied and analyzed every day. The research on multimedia texts, genre diversity, new platforms, and online publications has significantly contributed to the Media Studies. Techniques of persuasive communication, methods of argumentation, and verbal tools form a separate area of the research within the field. Unlike manipulation, persuasion is the conscious use of written or spoken language, interactive visualization, and infographics to influence someone’s beliefs, views, or actions; gain someone’s support, approve the suggested ways of behavior, intentions, etc. Means of persuasion in media texts serve as logical information accents aimed at the proper perception of the corresponding meanings. In general, factors of persuasion are to influence the masses and the motivation of their actions, modify views, and form public opinion. In journalism, these are meaningful words, thoughts, principles of high-quality narrative with the use of convincing arguments, facts and, most importantly, positive intentions for the readers. Persuasive media texts exclude manipulation of public opinion, trust and people’s inclination to perceive doctrines imposed on them. Keywords: persuasion, concept, visual information, social communication.

Gwin, Catherine, Mayra Ruiz, Saleema Vellani y Alejandro Guerrero. IDB-9: Access to Information. Inter-American Development Bank, marzo de 2013. http://dx.doi.org/10.18235/0010517.

Resumen
Following up on the IDB-9 commitments, the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB, or Bank) established a new Access to Information Policy that took effect on January 1, 2011. The new policy was expected to match international best practices and to increase the overall transparency of the Bank, strengthening its governance and development effectiveness. This review assesses the extent to which the access to information reform has been fully and effectively implemented. The review finds that the new policy largely matches best practices in comparator institutions, with, however, one provision that is unique to the IDB policy and inconsistent with the core principle of transparency: a broadly written exception to disclosure of country-specific information to which a country objects. As evidence of country use of this exception already suggests, this exception could completely undermine the access to information reform endeavor. The policy cannot be implemented effectively unless the country-specific exception is narrowed. Overall, the Bank is in the process of fully implementing the Access to Information Policy. Implementation progress has been substantial in the key areas of designing a regulatory framework, training staff, upgrading the Bank's document management system, and establishing governance structures and processes; and issues are being addressed as they become evident. Still, key steps to full and effective implementation remain under way. As a consequence, the effectiveness of the new policy has been significant in relation to the disclosure of key documents (such as Board-related information) but remains limited overall. Important revisions to the Implementation Guidelines have taken much longer than planned, and remain a work in progress. Timely disclosure and improved online access remain challenges. The share of documents made public under the new policy has decreased marginally, and staff and external stakeholders report limited awareness of the new policy. These findings reflect a need to improve IT monitoring systems to ensure policy compliance, expand staff training, broaden the communications strategy, and improve the online accessibility of information. This review offers six suggestions for further actions to advance effective implementation of the Access to Information Policy: (i) revise the policy to clarify that redaction is the remedy for country objections to disclosure of country-specific information, and make explicit that the final decision on the handling of information lies with the Bank, after consultation in cases of country concern; (ii) to be consistent with IDB-9 commitments to disclose project results, include Expanded Project Supervision Reports (XPSRs) in the list of disclosed information for non-sovereign-guaranteed operations; (iii) to effectively monitor policy compliance, establish a mechanism to spot-check the accuracy of document classification; (iv) enhance and launch the planned tracking system for timely disclosure of public information; (v) improve the IDB's website and better integrate the different repository systems to ensure easy and adequate accessibility to the Bank's information; and (vi) identify and track indicators of transparency.

Mills, Kathy, Elizabeth Heck, Alinta Brown, Patricia Funnell y Lesley Friend. Senses together : Multimodal literacy learning in primary education : Final project report. Institute for Learning Sciences and Teacher Education, Australian Catholic University, 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.24268/acu.8zy8y.

Resumen
[Executive summary] Literacy studies have traditionally focussed on the seen. The other senses are typically under-recognised in literacy studies and research, where the visual sense has been previously prioritised. However, spoken and written language, images, gestures, touch, movement, and sound are part of everyday literacy practices. Communication is no longer focussed on visual texts but is a multisensory experience. Effective communication depends then on sensory orchestration, which unifies the body and its senses. Understanding sensory orchestration is crucial to literacy learning in the 21st century where the combination of multisensory practices is both digital and multimodal. Unfortunately, while multimodal literacy has become an increasing focus in school curriculum, research has still largely remained focussed on the visual. The Sensory Orchestration for Multimodal Literacy Learning in Primary Education project, led by ARC Future Fellow Professor Kathy Mills, sought to address this research deficit. In addressing this gap, the project built an evidence base for understanding how students become critical users of sensory techniques to communicate through digital, virtual, and augmented-reality texts. The project has contributed to the development of new multimodal literacy programs and a next-generation approach to multimodality through the utilisation of innovative sensorial education programs in various educational environments including primary schools, digital labs, and art museums.
