Parker, Cindy Lou y Steven M. Shapiro. Climate Chaos. Greenwood Publishing Group, Inc., 2008. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9798400627538.

Texto completo
Resumen
Why should we care about climate chaos and global warming? Because, among other risky outcomes, they may seriously harm our health! Scientists around the world are in agreement that global warming, more aptly named climate change, is occurring and human activity is the primary cause. The debate now is in the scientific and policy worlds about just how harmful climate change will be and what are the best ways to stop it. One of those scientists is author Cindy Parker, who believes climate change is the most health-damaging problem humanity has ever faced. Parker has thus immersed herself during the past ten years in educating the public and health professionals about how climate change will affect our well-being. Here, she and husband, Steve Shapiro, a psychologist and former journalist, describe what we can expect if climate change continues unabated. The authors explain our possible physical and mental responses to such climate change factors as heat stress, poor air quality, insufficient water resources, and the rise of infectious diseases fueled by even minor increases in temperature. They also show how other changes that may result from climate change-including sea level rise, extreme weather events, and altered food supplies can harm human health. Parker and Shapiro have found, however, that just talking about the problem is not enough. Actions that can prevent or reduce climate change's harm are presented in each chapter. To illustrate how much global warming will affect our lives, Parker and Shapiro begin their book with a chapter showing the worst-case scenario if climate change continues without intervention, and end the book with the best case scenario if we act now. Their eye-opening work will appeal to everyone who wants to remain healthy as we challenge this world-altering problem of our own making . While written for a lay audience in a manner that limits technical terminology, the book will also appeal to students and professionals of public health, medicine, environmental psychology, and science who will find the focus on health and the extensive referencing useful.

Texto completo
Resumen
This book, for psychologists, clinicians, social scientists, and the general reader, reveals how chaos and nonlinear dynamics can bring new understanding to everyday topics in social sciences. Contributors are leaders in the intersection of psychology and chaos and complexity theories. Written first for the curious and the nonspecialist, while adding areas for those with a more extensive background, this book offers openness and creative wonder. It is conceptual and user-friendly, built around six themes—which are the main learnings for readers. These are (1) seeing nonlinearity, (2) appreciating emergence, (3) finding patterns, (4) using simple models, (5) intervening nonlinearly, and (6) considering new worldviews. It takes no specialized study—although there is more sophisticated material and optional math for those wishing it; the techie will, in addition, find concepts and diagrams to ponder. The volume intends to engage, at times may startle—whether about the weather, internet, organizations, family dynamics, health, evolution, or falling in love. It reveals how many social, personal, clinical, research, and life phenomena become understandable and can be modeled in the light of nonlinear dynamical systems theory. It even offers a broadening worldview, happening already in other sciences, toward a more dynamic, interconnected, and evolving picture, including process-oriented appreciation of one’s own experience. Readers meet the themes in different guises while learning to read subtle signs and patterns, and intervene like an aikido master in the flow of our dynamic world. The themes, are woven throughout diverse applications and extended in the integrative conclusions.

Sinor, Jennifer. The Yogic Writer. Bloomsbury Publishing Plc, 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9781350371996.

Texto completo
Resumen
Fusing the craft of writing and the philosophy and practice of yoga, The Yogic Writer charts a path to the heart of your creativity through the practice of yogic breathing, somatic exercises and meditations. With the tyranny of outcomes and product paralysing writers in this modern world, Jennifer Sinor summons her 30 years or experience teaching creative writing and yoga to guide your focus back to process, to discover your inner landscape and how writing, when undertaken with intention, transforms our creative potential. A call to sit within the mess and to not have all the answers, this book directs you to seek inspiration from within the body, to recognise it as a vessel, vehicle and teacher that generates knowledge and ideas separate from the cognitive brain. Connecting craft with the body throughout, it maps notions of writing - creating space for ideas and intentions, drafting, revision and sitting in sites of possibility and potential – onto the four stages of breath. Less curriculum and more contemplation through insights offered in brief essays, Sinor meets writers at the point of need, offering practical craft advice whilst meditating on deeper subjects being pursued: how to look, who is really writing, and how to listen to our bodies. With ideas owed to ancient wisdoms, knowledge informing creative writing pedagogy and composition, and Sinor’s own experience, The Yogic Writer offers a unique, alternative approach to finding creativity that forsakes external validation for internal knowledge and experimentation. Inspirational, affirmational and personal, this book is for anyone seeking permission to embody the life of a writer that they already know, deep down, to be theirs.

Resumen
Written in 1927, ‘The Language of the Argentines’ calls on members of Borges’s generation to participate in the creation of an authentic literary expression. The chapter analyses the essay and then focuses on a number of poems from Fervor de Buenos Aires (1923) and Luna de enfrente (1925) which realize aspects of that blueprint. The chapter charts the development of an ironic narrative voice which first appears in ‘Man on Pink Corner’ and crystallizes in ‘Pierre Menard, Author of the Quixote’. Drawing on the hypothesis of a debt to Paul Groussac’s Une énigme littéraire of 1903, put forward by Ricardo Piglia in Respiración artificial, the chapter uncovers a political subtext in ‘Pierre Menard’, which contests French and Spanish cultural hegemony. Written in Buenos Aires and acutely aware of relationships between language and nationality, ‘Pierre Menard’ shares with its precursor text a geopolitical motivation not generally recognized in Borges criticism.

Resumen
Edited and translated Medieval texts related to the Picts and Dark Age Scotland have been compiled for the first time in this one volume collection. Recorded texts include Pictish Origin Legends written in Medieval Irish and Pictish and Scottish Regnal Lists, many of which have never previously been edited. Students and scholars will also find appendices containing lists, tables, and charts of supplemental information related to the Picts. Dictionaries of 500 personal, place, and population names associated with the Picts provide further innovative analysis of these texts. Calise has compiled a useful tool which allows scholars and students to compare and contrast the content of these texts in one handy reference book. There are no written documents attributable to the Picts, leaving their history to be created mainly by non-Picts. This refence work is an attempt to find historical truths within the mythological with the use of the available Medieval documentary sources.

Resumen
This chapter provides an overview of issues relating to documentary evidence and document production. In any investor-state arbitration case, each party is responsible for producing the evidence required to prove its case. This evidence can be introduced either through the production of documentary evidence or through witness testimony. Similarly, a party may need certain documents from opposing counsel. Here, the fundamental understanding of the term ‘document’ is not restricted merely to ‘paper’—to actual documents written in words. Documentary evidence can appear in a wide range of styles (such as drawings, emails, pictures, charts, graphs, and many more) and a wide range of forms (physical, audio, visual, electronic, and more).

Resumen
The Short Story: A Very Short Introduction charts the rise of the short story from its original appearance in magazines and newspapers. For much of the 19th century, tales were written for the press, and the form’s history is marked by engagement with popular fiction. The short story then earned a reputation for its skilful use of plot design and character study distinct from the novel. This VSI considers the continuity and variation in key structures and techniques such as the beginning, the creation of voice, the ironic turn or plot twist, and how writers manage endings. Throughout, it draws on examples from an international and flourishing corpus of work.

Texto completo
Resumen
‘A map of later medieval philosophy’ charts the development of medieval philosophy from the year 1200, which marks an important break across all four traditions, to the 17th century. Latin philosophy was transformed in the 13th century by the rise of the universities of Paris and Oxford. After Maimonides died in 1204, Jewish philosophy (previously written in Arabic) flourished among Jews living in Christian Europe writing in Hebrew. Also in 1204, the Crusaders took Constantinople, and Byzantine philosophy became heavily influenced by Latin writing. Averroes’ death in 1198 marked the end of the falsafa tradition. Philosophy continued to flourish in the Islamic East, but in a form that linked it much more closely to theology.

The Oxford Handbook of Karl Barth is the most expansive guide to Barth’s work published to date. Comprising over forty original chapters, each of which is written by an expert in the field, the Handbook provides rich analysis of Barth’s life and context, advances penetrating interpretations of the key elements of his thought, and opens and charts new paths for critical and constructive reflection. It seeks to illuminate the complex and challenging world of Barth’s theology, to engage with it from multiple perspectives, and to communicate something of the joyful nature of theology as Barth conceived it. It will serve as an indispensable resource for undergraduates, postgraduates, academics, and general readers for years to come.

Clark, Frederic. The First Pagan Historian. Oxford University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190492304.001.0001.

Texto completo
Resumen
The First Pagan Historian traces the reception history of a text that is now largely neglected but once occupied a central role in the ancient canon—the De excidio Troiae historia or History of the Destruction of Troy of one Dares Phrygius, who claimed to have been an eyewitness observer of the Trojan War. From late antiquity (when most scholars today now agree that the extant Latin version of the text was written) to the eighteenth-century Enlightenment, this study charts the many surprising twists and turns in the afterlife of an author long considered the first of the pagans to write history. It examines the subversive challenge that Dares posed to other ancient canonical traditions (especially the poetry of Homer and Virgil), and the manner in which Dares’s bold rewriting of the Troy story enabled centuries of postclassical readers to forge their own—sometimes radical—visions of the distant past. In doing so, The First Pagan Historian moves back and forth between the ancient world itself and various moments in the Middle Ages and the early modern period. The book uses the fortunes of a forged text to interrogate approaches to history, fiction, myth, philology, criticism, authorship, and numerous other topics of profound importance to the interplay between antiquity and modernity.

Resumen
This chapter discusses how texts established and perpetuated a link between the spiritual grace of Kievan and Northern Rus′ and monastic life. Hagiography, homily, and prayers, written in the monasteries and incorporated into local collections, helped disseminate core beliefs about the conversion of Vladimir in Kiev and an indelible link between the territory of Rus′—already seen as a magical place in folklore—and the Orthodox faith. The chapter charts the types of national and individual stories told in the literature. Textual production remained based in monasteries and stable as a manuscript culture, but new styles of writing altered and enhanced the rhetorical character of a wide range of forms, including, hagiography, legends, tales of miracles and holy fools, and sermons.

Resumen
This is the first biography, written from a legal perspective, on the public life of Judah P Benjamin (1811-1884); one of the giants of the common law world in the second half of the 19th century. It charts his meteoric rise as an American lawyer first in the mixed legal system of Louisiana and then nationally. In 1853 he was the first person of Jewish heritage to be offered nomination to the US Supreme Court – an honour he declined. Benjamin was also a member of the US Senate, a slave owner and a supporter of Southern secession. In the Civil War he served continuously in the Confederate Cabinet initially as Attorney General, then as Secretary of War and finally as Secretary of State. Following the victory of the Union he fled America, a fugitive. In political exile in England he requalified as a Barrister. Within a decade he had written a scholarly and long enduring treatise on commercial law and become the undisputed advocate of choice in appeals before the House of Lords and the Privy Council. This work considers the extraordinary career of this distinguished and complex jurist and reflects upon his legacy

Resumen
This book reproduces the texts of four lectures, followed by discussions, and two interviews with Lise Gauvin published in Introduction à une poétique du divers (1996); and also four further interviews from L’Imaginaire des langues (Lise Gauvin, 2010). It covers a wide range of topics but key recurring themes are creolization, language and langage, culture and identity, ‘monolingualism’, the ‘Chaos-world’ and the role of the writer. Migration and the various different kinds of migrants are also discussed, as is the difference between ‘atavistic’ and ‘composite’ communities, the art of translation, identity as a ‘rhizome’ rather than a single root, the Chaos-World and chaos theory, ‘trace thought’ as opposed to ‘systematic thought’, the relation between ‘place’ and the Whole-World, exoticism, utopias, a new definition of beauty as the realized quantity of differences, the status of literary genres and the possibility that literature as a whole will disappear. Four of the interviews (Chapters 6, 7, 8 and 9) relate to particular works that Glissant has published: Tout-monde, Le monde incrée, La Cohée du Lamentin, Une nouvelle région du monde. Many of these themes have been explored in his previous works, but here, because in all the chapters we see Glissant interacting with the questions and views of other people, they are presented in a particularly accessible form.

Texto completo
Resumen
The Persian Presence in Victorian Poetry surveys the variety of ways in which Persia, and the multitude of ideological, historical, cultural and political notions that it embodied, were received, circulated, and appropriated. The word ‘Persia’ to the Victorian was not just the name of a territorial entity but a matrix of different notions, created and crafted by a range of oral and written stories, themes and tropes. ‘Persia’ was a product of a mental vision with a long historical heritage, formed by a variety of sources, and circulating in different media. The Victorians responded to this heritage from different perspectives, marked by every shade of social class, religious affiliation, or political allegiance. This book charts this diversity of perceptions, exploring the ways in which ‘Persia’ figures in Victorian poetry across a broad range of works incorporating literary, historical, and cultural material.

Texto completo
Resumen
Stress tests are the most innovative regulatory tool to prevent and fight financial crises. Their use has fundamentally changed the modeling of financial systems, financial risk management in the public and private sector, and the policies designed to prevent and mitigate financial crises. When financial crises hit, stress tests take center stage. Despite their centrality to public policy, the optimal design and use of stress tests remains highly contested. Written by an international team of leading thinkers from academia, the public sector, and the private sector, this handbook comprehensively surveys and evaluates the state of play and charts the innovations that will determine the path ahead. It is a comprehensive and interdisciplinary resource that bridges theory and practice and places financial stress testing in its wider context. This guide is essential reading for researchers, practitioners, and policymakers working on financial risk management and financial regulation.

Chapman, James. Licence to Thrill. Bloomsbury Publishing Plc, 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9781350211124.

Texto completo
Resumen
Licence To Thrill is the definitive scholarly study of the full history of the James Bond film series from the first picture, Dr No (1962), to the present. It considers the origins of the films in the spy thrillers of Ian Fleming and examines the production histories of the films in the contexts of the British and international film industries. James Chapman explores how the films have changed over time in response to developments in the wider film culture and society at large. He charts the ever-evolving Bond formula, analysing the films’ representations of nationhood, class and gender in a constantly shifting cinematic and ideological landscape. Licence To Thrill has been described as an ‘indispensable’ work for film historians and Bond fans alike. For this third edition, Chapman has thoroughly updated the existing content, written a new Introduction and added new chapters on the most recent films – Quantum of Solace, Skyfall, Spectre and No Time to Die - which star Daniel Craig as Bond.

Resumen
The movements in Dido and Aeneas built over a ground (repeating) bass illustrate Purcell’s achievement in balancing repetitive patterning with asymmetrical phrase structure, thus transforming a common compositional artifice into artistic expression. In “Ah, Belinda,” he writes a declamation and an air over the same repeating bass pattern. In “Oft she visits,” the collapse of normalcy into destructive chaos depicted in the text is illustrated by the alteration he makes to the relationship between the repeating bass and the vocal line. Dido’s Lament is the most extensively constructed of these airs, the links to the preceding and following movements creating an extended scene depicting Dido’s dying moments.

Resumen
The presidential election of 1968 forever changed American politics. In this character-driven narrative history, Aram Goudsouzian portrays the key transformations that played out over that dramatic year. It was the last "Old Politics" campaign, where political machines and party bosses determined the major nominees, even as the "New Politics" of grassroots participation powered primary elections. It was an election that showed how candidates from both the Left and Right could seize on "hot-button" issues to alter the larger political dynamic. It showcased the power of television to "package" politicians and political ideas, and it played out against an extraordinary dramatic global tableau of chaos and conflict. More than anything else, it was a moment decided by a contest of political personalities, as a group of men battled for the presidency, with momentous implications for the nation’s future. Well-paced, accessible, and engagingly written, Goudsouzian’s book chronicles anew the characters and events of the 1968 campaign as an essential moment in American history, one with clear resonance in our contemporary political moment.

This volume examines how, why and with what success smaller European literatures – written in less well-known languages from less familiar traditions – endeavour through translation to reach international readers. It argues that prevailing nation- and world-centred theoretical approaches have failed to provide an adequate understanding of the international circulation of these literatures, and instead advocates and models a comparative, interdisciplinary approach that consistently tests theory against concrete experience and practice, and combines literary, historiographical and translation methodologies to produce a far more precise analysis of the strategies, motivations, obstacles and patterns that emerge as these literatures strive to be heard. Through case studies drawn from over thirteen national contexts from Scandinavia and the Low Countries to the Mediterranean and Central and Eastern Europe, the volume analyses how the international perceptions of these literatures are disadvantaged and distorted in theory, reception and industry practice, evaluates successes and failures as these literatures, through state and third-sector intervention and individual innovation, attempt to overcome their marginalization, and charts how the mould of our perception of these literatures might be broken.

Resumen
Winner of the 1953 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and specifically cited by the Swedish Academy when Hemingway received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1954, The Old Man and the Sea remains one of the author's most beloved works. This casebook helps readers interpret and appreciate the thematic concerns of the novel, as well as the contextual issues it explores. Topic chapters provide information on Cuba, including its natural geography, sociopolitical history, and the ethnic background of its people. A wide variety of primary documents such as interviews and articles, along with charts and illustrations, establish a framework for interdisciplinary study. One chapter with particular appeal to students deals with Hemingway's treatment of the ethos and issues of baseball and sports. Included are documents pertaining to the Cuban league, the legendary Joe DiMaggio, and a historical perspective of baseball offered by the Director of Research at the Cooperstown Baseball Hall of Fame in an original interview conducted for this book. The casebook is completed with contemporary issues, suggestions for oral and written exploration of the novel, and suggested further readings.

Resumen
Addressing its technical evolution as well as its military and social impact, this comprehensive reference shows how historic leaders such as Dionysus of Syracuse, the Ottoman sultan Mohammad II, Oliver Cromwell, and Napoleon Bonaparte were successful in battle because of their innovative use of artillery. Artillery: An Illustrated History of Its Impact charts the development of large, crew-operated battlefield weapons from the dart firers and catapults of the ancient world to the invention of gunpowder in China and its applications in medieval Europe, and from the emergence of naval and land gunnery four centuries ago to the latest rapid-fire, rocket propulsion, laser guidance, and antiaircraft technologies. Written by an expert on military history, Artillery explores the technological and strategic innovations that have made these weapons increasingly effective at breaking through fortifications, inflicting casualties from a safe distance, providing cover for advancing forces, demoralizing opponents, and defending positions from attack. Beyond the battlefield, the book also looks at the impact of artillery on history and on the lives of civilians as well as soldiers.

Resumen
This book provides a detailed article-by-article commentary on the recast EU Regulation on Insolvency Proceedings (EIR), written by a group of experts drawn from several European jurisdictions. The commentary is prefaced by an introductory chapter that explains the rationale for the EIR, charts the background to its enactment, and sketches its key features as originally made and as recast. The commentary that follows has been published in time to cover the long-awaited and much-debated recast Regulation which was finalised in 2015. The introduction of the recast EIR has given authors and editors the opportunity to analyse a newly drafted and modernised law, containing a highly sophisticated set of rules designed to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of Member State insolvency laws in cross-border cases. The timing of publication will enable practitioners and scholars to equip themselves with a thorough understanding of the recast EIR ahead of full implementation in 2017. The article-by-article analysis has a multi-jurisdictional focus which reports and evaluates significant developments in the application of the Regulation across Member States. This is a key new work for all those who advise on or research European insolvency law.

Resumen
This chapter charts the artistic trajectory of northeastern Brazilian poet, singer, writer, playwright and actor José Paes de Lira, known as Lirinha, situating his experiments as a long-standing attempt to reject and revise the regional folklorism within which audiences and critics often received his performances. The chapter examines Lirinha’s work, both as the visionary behind the nationally acclaimed group Cordel do Fogo Encantado (1998–2010) and in his subsequent musical and theatrical efforts. It also traces Lirinha’s turn away from folklorism as a reaction against narratives of “cultural rescue” that pressured him to uphold static notions of cultural roots. Reinforcing an overarching argument within this volume, Sharp argues that Lirinha’s work is culturally transformative within its particular field of cultural production, even if it is not always audible as experimental.
