A theory of news structuration is proposed which seeks to overcome the dichotomy between agency and structure in news sociology. Cette thèse a pour but d’étudier l’écriture du journal chez Annie Ernaux à partir de sept textes diaristiques : Journal du dehors, « Je ne suis pas sortie de ma nuit », La Vie extérieure, Se perdre, le « photojournal » d’Écrire la vie, L’Atelier noir et Regarde les lumières mon amour. Ces journaux se différencient par leur forme et par leur fond : journal intime, journal externe, journal d’écriture et photojournal. Ils entretiennent également des liens avec les textes littéraires de leur auteur. Nous nous sommes intéressé tout d’abord à leur poétique, en partant du cadre théorique de la forme journalière pour analyser leur transcription du temps, leur structure fragmentaire et la figure de la diariste. Puis nous avons étudié le rôle triple joué par la pratique diaristique chez l’auteur : le besoin de conserver une trace du vécu et du fait social, l’aide psychologique au quotidien et la découverte de soi. En dernier lieu, nous avons analysé les résonances des journaux dans les différents textes de notre corpus, les liens les unissant aux extraits intimes parus dans des revues littéraires, de même que les rapports entre journaux et récits, tant par leurs thématiques que par leur conception et le recours à la photographie. Notre étude montre ainsi toute l’importance jouée par le journal dans la vie et le travail littéraire d’Annie Ernaux. La forme diaristique lui est en effet indispensable pour retracer son existence, garantir sa vérité et accompagner ses projets d’écriture
This thesis aims to study the diary writing of Annie Ernaux from seven diaristic texts: Journal du dehors, “Je ne suis pas sortie de ma nuit”, La Vie extérieure, Se perdre, “photojournal” in Écrire la vie, L’Atelier noir and Regarde les lumières mon amour. These diaries are differentiated by their forms and their contents: intimate diary, impersonal diary, literary diary, and photojournal. They also have links with the literary works of their author. We were interested first of all in their poetics, based on the theoretical framework of diary form in order to analyze their time transcription, their fragmentary structure and the diarist’s figure. Then we studied the triple role played by her diaristic practice: the need to keep a record of personal experience and social facts, the psychological assistance in daily life and the self-discovery. Finally, we analyzed the resonances in the texts of our corpus, their links with diary fragments published in literary journals, as well as the relationship between diaries and literary works, in their themes, their conception and the use of photography. Thus our study shows the diary’s importance in the life and the literary work of Annie Ernaux. The diaristic form is essential for her to trace her existence, guarantee her verity and accompany her writing projects

William Impey (1818-1896) came to South Africa as a Wesleyan Methodist Missionary in 1839. He held various missionary and colonial appointments until 1860 when he succeeded William Shaw as Chairman of the Albany and Kaffraria District and General Superintendent of Wesleyan Methodist Missions in South-East Africa. Impey's major contribution was in the provision of education for the indigenous peoples of this region, especially as President of Healdtown (1868-1878). This institution eventually became one of the most highly thought of mission education academies in South Africa. To date little has been known of the life and work of William Impey despite his senior position in South African Wesleyan Methodism. J Whiteside's History of the Wesleyan Methodist Church of South Africa, the last comprehensive history of South African Methodism, published in 1906, only devotes a few lines to Impey. He does however make further reference to Impey's work in his section on education. The Methodist Archive at Manchester University, which contains the personal records of all 19th century Wesleyan Methodist ministers, also has very little information about Impey. The reason for this relative lack of information is that he resigned from the Wesleyan Methodist Church in 1878 on doctrinal grounds. Impey came under the influence of 19th century liberal theology and eventually drew the conclusion that he could no longer accept the doctrine of 'eternal punishment'. He believed that the only honest thing for him to do was to resign from the Wesleyan Methodist Church, which he believed required its ministers to adhere to this doctrine. He was accepted for ordination by the Anglican Church and served as a deacon in 1878 and then as a priest until his death in 1896. Impey's journal affords the reader an opportunity to have a glimpse into what life was like for a 19th century missionary living and working in South Africa. Perhaps its particular value lies in the many detailed entries Impey made about his personal spiritual experiences. The aim of this thesis is to place the life's work of William Impey in its historical and theological context in the belief that this will enable us better to understand the 19th century missionaries. It is hoped that this study will make a further contribution to our understanding of both 19th century missionaries and the times in which they lived and worked.

Cette thèse traite du processus de valorisation des quotidiens nationaux d’informations générales sur le double marché de la presse (lecteurs et annonceurs) en s’intéressant au rôle de l’activité d’édition dans la création de valeur. L’analyse de l’activité des « travailleurs de la presse » (rédacteurs, secrétaires de rédaction, direction des journaux, personnel des régies publicitaires, etc.) vise à décrire la production d’un bien hybride, à la fois informationnel et publicitaire, dont les caractéristiques finales résultent d’opérations de qualification et d’évaluation des contenus, et d’opérations rédactionnelles et techniques transformant des projets éditoriaux en produits édités. L’observation du travail éditorial et des usages des dispositifs d’édition dans les rédactions de presse quotidienne montre l’existence d’un processus de rationalisation de l’activité de conception et de fabrication du journal. Les directions cherchent à maîtriser ce processus pour accroître leur contrôle de l’édition et de la valorisation des quotidiens mais la rationalisation industrielle ne garantit pas la rentabilité des entreprises dans un marché des biens informationnels en mutation. Pour faire face aux incertitudes liées à la valorisation des journaux, les éditeurs agissent sur le positionnement éditorial des titres et sur le travail d’édition effectué par les rédactions, tout en engageant le développement de structures rédactionnelles « plurimédias ». L’activité d’édition des contenus est au cœur de la chaîne de valeur du journal, mais l’évolution des pratiques culturelles et la transformation du paysage médiatique engendrent une remise en cause des modèles économiques des entreprises de presse et bousculent les pratiques de travail dans les rédactions comme les représentations des métiers qui s’y exercent
This thesis deals with the process of valorization of national daily newspapers on the two-sided market of the press (readers and advertisers) and considers the role of the edition activity in the creation of value. The analysis of the activity of “press workers” (writers, editors, managers, commercials in advertising agencies) aims at describing the production of an hybrid good, both informational and advertising, of which final characteristics result from operations of qualification and valuation of contents, and from editorial and technical operations that transform editorial projects into edited products. The observation of editorial work and edition systems uses in daily press newsrooms shows a process of rationalization of the conception and production of newspapers. Editors want to master this process in order to reinforce their control of edition and valorization of newspapers, but industrial rationalization does not guarantee firms profitability in a changing market of informational goods. To face uncertainty of newspapers valorization, editors take action on the editorial position of papers and on the work of edition done by editorial staff, and they engage the development of cross-media newsrooms. The activity of contents edition is at the heart of the value chain of newspaper, but the evolution of cultural practices and the transforming media landscape put in question business models of newspapers and challenge work practices as well as representations of occupations in newsrooms

In 1929, the Scientific Crime Detection Laboratory was established in Chicago–the first of its kind in the United States. The purpose was to engage in practical use of scientific methods in the detection of crime. In 1930, the institute published its own periodical called The American Journal of Police Science. Applying the theory of boundary-work, this essay analyses how the novelty institute argued its legitimacy as a scientific establishment through the expansion of Police Science as a collective field of knowledge. The boundaries of Police Science expanded through certain patterns: the need for, and success of, science in solving crimes; its connection to the Northwestern University, engaging in education and research; by relating contested fields of knowledge to established sciences; through technological artefacts; by language demarcating “pseudo-science” from “real science”; and as an activity based on structure. Through professionalization, higher education and official accreditation the expert became science-by-proxy representing his field of knowledge in the court of law. Exclusion of pseudo-scientists was imperative to maintain and establish epistemological and scientific authority. Influenced by the “Progressives”, Police Science included reforms such as basic education for police officers; the removal of illegal and unscientific, but institutionalised, practices such as “third-degree” to regain the public‟s trust. In the conflict between the old-school and the new generation, Sherlock Holmes became a symbol used by both sides to discredit the opponent.

This action research study summarizes the investigation of journal writing and cooperative grouping with 8th grade geometry students in the construction of proof. Students written responses to prompts in journals were analyzed over the course of twelve weeks. Case studies of four students were developed from the researchers' three geometry classes. All four students in the study participated in an academic program called Pre International Baccalaureate Preparation. Standardized test scores and an attitude scale categorized the four students. The ATMAT survey (Appendix A) measured each student's attitude toward mathematics. Writing prompts focused on the students' perceptions of the group process in constructing proofs and the development of geometric proof. The results suggested the students were engaged in learning within their cooperative groups but they also desired individual time before coming to a group setting. In addition, students' written responses to journal prompts may provide an informal assessment and help students convey their own understanding of proof before any formal assessments.

S’il est devenu aujourd’hui assez courant de s’intéresser à la genèse d’écrits littéraires divers, il est un genre qui ne semble guère se prêter à ce genre d’approche : le journal personnel. Écriture au jour le jour, écriture a priori spontanée semblant exclure tout brouillon, toute préparation autre que mentale, on ne voit pas bien comment on pourrait en suivre la genèse. Or les Cahiers de Jacques de Bourbon Busset que nous publions ici apportent un démenti éclatant à de tels préjugés : pendant six ans et demi, d’août 1958 à décembre 1964, l’écrivain, qui a déjà publié plusieurs récits, va s’interroger très longuement sur ce que doit être son œuvre essentielle, qu’il estime ne pas avoir encore écrite. Et ces Cahiers montrent en particulier comment, peu à peu, il évolue, abandonnant l’idée d’écrire un grand roman, puis un livre d’essais, puis un grand récit autobiographique, pour accepter finalement l’idée que l’œuvre essentielle qu’il doit écrire est son Journal, Journal qu’il publiera effectivement pendant vingt ans. Comment arriver à accepter cette idée quand on déteste l’anecdotique, la complaisance, le narcissisme et quand on refuse de prendre soi-même la parole dans ses livres ?
Although it has now become quite common to study the origins of various literary works there is one genre which would not appear to be suited to this type of approach: the personal diary. Entries are written day to day, the writing is, in principle, spontaneous, and would appear to exclude any kind of rough draft, any kind of preparation other than mental. It is difficult to see, therefore, how its origin can be tracked. And yet the Cahiers written by Jacques de Bourbon Busset that we are publishing here refute such prejudices completely: for six and a half years, from August 1958 to December 1964, the author, who had already published several books, was to ask himself at great length what his essential work was to be, work that he believed he had not yet written. And these Cahiers demonstrate specifically how he gradually evolved, abandoning ideas of writing a great novel, then a book of essays and then a major autobiographical account, before finally accepting the idea that the essential work he had to write was his Journal or private diary, a Journal that he actually published over a period of twenty years. How did he come to accept this idea when he hated all things anecdotal, self-indulgent or narcissistic and when he refused to speak in the first person in his books?

Cette thèse repose sur une triple démarche éditoriale, génétique et littéraire. Jean Vilar appartient à l'histoire sociale et théâtrale en tant que fondateur et directeur du festival d'Avignon, de 1947 à 1971, directeur du Théâtre national populaire, de 1951 à 1963, comédien, metteur en scène et chef de troupe. C'est aussi un polygraphe dont l'ambition initiale était de devenir écrivain. Cette thèse réfute l'idée de concurrence entre la vocation littéraire et théâtrale. La pratique de l'écriture nourrit celle de la recherche scénique et sa position de directeur alimente une correspondance et un journal de travail au sein desquels s'expriment un style propre, un ton reconnaissable et une vision du monde. La démarche éditoriale repose sur la constitution d'un corpus de 328 lettres, pour la plupart inédites, transcrites, classées et commentées. Elles témoignent des échanges avec les personnalités théâtrales, littéraires, politiques et intellectuelles, de la sortie de guerre aux années 1970. Le journal de travail de Vilar, intitulé « mémento », est transcrit et annoté dans son entièreté, de 1952 à 1970. Il se compose de trois carnets dont seuls le premier et le début du deuxième avaient été publiés. Nous présentons et étudions le troisième, inédit, que Vilar a tenu de sa démission du TNP à sa mort. La démarche génétique consiste à comparer les différentes versions du « Mémento » : du journal de bord initial à sa réécriture. Quel regard l'artiste retiré porte-t-il sur le passé et comment le transforme-t-il ? Quelle image de son œuvre et de lui-même construit-il pour la postérité ? Comment la réécriture de soi hybride-t-elle le journal entre carnet de bord et autobiographie professionnelle ? This PhD thesis follows a threefold editorial, genetic, and literary approach. Jean Vilar holds a prominent place in social and theatrical history as the founder and director of the Avignon Festival (1947–1971), the director of the Théâtre National Populaire (1951–1963), as well as an actor, director, and troupe leader. Additionally, Vilar was a prolific writer whose original ambition was to become an author. This thesis refutes the idea of competition between literary and theatrical vocations. The practice of writing enriches his theatrical research, and his position as director fosters a body of correspondence and work diaries where a distinct style, recognizable tone, and vision of the world emerge. The editorial approach focuses on the creation of a corpus of 328 letters, most of which are previously unpublished, transcribed, classified, and annotated. These letters reflect Vilar’s exchanges with theatrical, literary, political, and intellectual figures from the post-war period to the 1970s. Vilar’s work diary, entitled "Mémento", has been fully transcribed and annotated for the period from 1952 to 1970. It consists of three notebooks, of which only the first and the beginning of the second had been published. This study presents and analyzes the third, previously unpublished, which Vilar maintained from his resignation from the TNP until his death. The genetic approach compares the different versions of the "Mémento", from the initial logbook to its later rewritings. What perspective does the retired artist take on the past, and how does he transform it? What image of his work and of himself does he construct for posterity? How does this self-rewriting blend the journal between a logbook and a professional autobiography? Finally, the literary analysis of the corpus aims to study the characteristics of Vilar’s writing as a letter-writer and diarist, highlighting its specificity, based on a combination of high professional standards and tender friendship

Archive profession, just like other professions, has not so long ago observed the lack of women in the archive world. The old patriarchal order and other power relations kept women out of archives and the labor market. Today, the labor market and the archive world look completely different as women just like men, are treated equally. There is even talk of a shift, that the norm of male archivist has instead become a norm of women archivist. The aim of this studie was to discover if a possible shift can be expressed within the international archival journal Archival Science, by examining what the gender distribution looks like among writers and how gender issues are addressed in the articles. With a qualitative and quantitative content analysis as method and a theory of gender systems by Yvonne Hirdman, the studie where able to obtain gender statistics and scheme from the contributing writers in the journal, and also what the writers dealt with when gender was mentioned in their research. The main result showed that women, both when it came to gender distribution among Archival Science writers and which of them touched on gender in their articles, the gender distribution of the various subject categories based on what was treated subjectively when gender was raised, were most numerous in all results. On the other hand, it was clear that both gender issues and women became more towards the end of the study period, and that the gender category of men shrunk in number, at the same time as the number of writers who wrote articles together regardless of gender, grew. Which means that the gender order changed during the period examined.

The thesis compare Växjö municipality’s former direct-delivering post handling process to the coordinated post handling process, which is now being used in certain areas in the education department in Växjö municipality. By mapping the two processes, a comparison was made possible. Local, central and one external respondents have been interviewed about the matters of security of life and property, work environment, climatical stress and costs. By analyzing collected data and theory about these matters, the writers found, among others, following differences: Work environment is partly changed for the worse Improved security of life and property Decreased climatical stress Probably decreased costs Also examined in the thesis are what experiences Växjö municipality should take with them if the coordinated post handling process is to be implemented in other departments in the municipality. The matters examined are security of life and property, work environment, climatical stress, costs and implementation. The present thesis deals with proverbial usage in A Sentimental Journey, A Journal to Eliza, and A Political Romance. It consists of three compilations of proverbs, three commentaries, and a listing of the proverbial expressions cited in each work. In the 'Compilations', those parts of the text in which proverbs occur are quoted followed by the proverbs as they are cited in both modem and contemporary dictionaries. The 'Commentary' deals with the significance of the proverb in each work. In chapter 1, the different devices employed by Sterne when manipulating proverb lore are categorised and examined. In chapters 2, 3 and 4 the different ways in which proverb lore reflects upon the principal themes and ideas, in the three works, are analysed. In the 'Lists of Proverbs' following the commentary, all the proverbs, and the repeated proverbs, cited in Sterne's three works are listed in the order in which they occur in the different texts. The 'Compilations', the 'Commentary' and the 'Lists of Proverbs' complement one another: while the first part of the thesis testifies to Sterne's familiarity with his tradition and the degree of his reliance upon it, the third comprises a synopsis of Part I, and the second deals with the significance of proverb lore in each work. The present endeavour highlights an important aspect of Sterne's writings and makes a contribution to the corpus of literary criticism about the author.

Das Wort was a literary journal published by German Communist writers and fellow-travelers exiled in Moscow from 1936 to 1939. It was to be a mouthpiece for German literature in exile and to promote the Popular Front policy, which sought to unite disparate elements in non-Fascist Europe in opposition to the Nazis. Das Wort, under the editorship of German Communist writers whose close association with the Soviet Union had been well established in the previous decade, tried to provide a forum for exiled writers of various political persuasions, but was unwavering in its positive portrayal of Stalin's Soviet Union and the policies of that country. As the level of hysteria grew with the successive purges and public show trials in the Soviet Union, the journal adopted an even more eulogistic and militant attitude: any criticism or expression of doubt about Soviet policy was equated with support for Fascism. Thus the ability of the journal to contribute to the formation of a true common front in Europe to oppose Fascism was compromised from the outset by its total support for the Soviet Union. The Popular Front policy foundered on this issue, and that portion of German literature in exile which was to form the first generation of East German literature was inextricably bound to the Soviet Union well before the German Democratic Republic came in to existence.

Recently, scientific publishing has experienced an expansion of journals and publishers whose primary goal is profit and whose peer review process is virtually non-existent. These “predatory” or “opportunistic” journals pose a threat to the credibility and integrity of legitimate scientific literature, and quality science. Unfortunately, many scientists choose to publish in these journals and/or serve on their editorial boards, either due to ease of rapid publication or naivety. Here, we highlight the extensive use of predatory publications or editorial board involvement by applicants applying for a faculty position in the Pharmaceutical Sciences department at the Bill Gatton College of Pharmacy at East Tennessee State University. We caution search committees at other pharmacy schools to thoroughly examine applicant curricula vitarum (CVs) for predatory publishing.

The purpose of this study was to explore the experiences of unaccompanied immigrant youth. The sample consisted of 31 participants from El Salvador, Guatemala, or Honduras. Qualitative data were gathered through hand-written journals.

Reasons for immigration were family reunification, escaping harm, and better opportunities. Challenges during the journey included hunger, witnessing the mistreatment of women, physical illness, exhaustion, and confrontation with federales. Helpful resources were family, monetary support, and coyotes.

Challenges while acclimating to life in the United States included adjusting to new family dynamics and learning English. Others reported their concern about family members back home who were in danger. Several mentioned personal strengths, such as dedication to their family, drive to pursue an education, and faith and spirituality.

The results suggest that social workers should provide interventions with sensitivity to the unique experiences of these youth, as well as advocate for policy changes to assist this vulnerable population.

Objectives: The library has developed a monthly librarian journal club to foster professional development and critical thinking. The purpose of this study is to quantitatively analyze the subject domains of the articles (reference; education; collections; management; information access/retrieval; marketing/promotion); journals most frequently read; and what methodologies were most frequently used in the articles and to qualitatively analyze the value of the journal club to the growth of librarians involved and the value to the library through the evidence discovered. Methods: Librarians meet monthly at a restaurant for journal club. Each attendee reports on an article of their choice from the library literature. Each participant is given ten minutes to report. A discussion follow. After journal club, each attendee writes a report on their article in a structured abstract format (practice question, article title, citation, study type, answer). These summaries are critically appraised topics (CATs) and are saved in a CAT bank called CATTales. Over 100 CATs have been entered into the CATTales database. Results: The result of CATTALEs is the creation of a searchable evidence based librarianship database. Examples of the journal club’s impact are the development of bookmarks for basic science researchers, the undertaking of a content analysis on the future librarianship, and the revamping of a reference statistics program. Young librarians have developed skills in reading the literature, translating research into practice, and learning new research concepts. Conclusions: Many ideas have sprung from these monthly meetings. Librarians have gained validation for practices already in place and started new initiatives in education, promotion and research on ideas based on journal club discussions. This project has promoted interest in reading the journal literature and encouraged librarians to keep current. A tool like a medical librarian journal club is a practical way to practice evidence based librarianship.

Este trabalho fundamenta-se nas teorias propostas por Donald W. Winnicott e tem por objetivo elucidar alguns eixos norteadores da classificação diagnóstica nas diversas configurações subjetivas descritas pelo analista inglês. Para alcançar esse objetivo, em um primeiro momento descreve-se a teoria do amadurecimento emocional, ressaltando o processo de integração, a questão da trama psicossomática ― a habitação da psique no soma ― e as relações de objeto. Na sequência, busca-se delinear os critérios diagnósticos propostos por Winnicott ao longo de sua obra, traçando um quadro a partir de cinco tipos clínicos: neurose, psicose, esquizoidia, tendência antissocial e falso self. Essa classificação demonstra as preocupações do autor com a dimensão humana do processo terapêutico, a criatividade e a saúde, bem como com a gravidade dos distúrbios psíquicos elencados no tratamento psicanalítico. Nesse sentido, descrevem-se algumas experiências do manejo clínico e a importância do holding e da interpretação, sobretudo naquilo que se denomina de interpretação-holding. Com isso, aponta-se para a existência de interpretações que assumem a função de holding no percurso analítico. Assim, acredita-se que os conceitos e as indicações clínicas postuladas por Winnicott ao longo de sua obra podem trazer elementos e subsídios para pensar as múltiplas manifestações de sofrimento psíquico que surgem na clínica psicanalítica contemporânea.
This study was based on the theories proposed by Donald W. Winnicott and aimed at elucidating some guidelines for diagnostic classification in several subjective configurations described by this English psychoanalyst. In order to reach this goal, at first, the Theory of Emotional Development was described, highlighting the integration process, the psychosomatic process– psyche indwelling in the soma – and the object relations. Therefore, a chart based on five diagnostic categories (neurosis, psychosis, schizoidism, anti-social tendency and true self and false self) was created with the purpose of outlining the diagnostic criteria established by Winnicott throughout his work. This classification shows Winnicott’s concern with the human dimension of the therapeutic process, creativity and health, as well as with the gravity of psychic disorders involved in psychoanalytic treatment. In this sense, some episodes of clinical management and the important role of holding and interpretation were described (especially in the so-entitled holding-interpretation experiences). By doing so, it was possible to indicate the existence of interpretations which took the place of holding along the therapeutic journey. Consequently, it is believed that the concepts and clinical indications postulated by Winnicott throughout his work can provide us with elements and principles to consider the multiple symptoms of psychical suffering that intersperse contemporary psychoanalitic practice.

In this qualitative, action research study, I aimed to improve my teaching practices in my seventh grade drama classroom. I conducted the study by implementing a monologue unit plan I had used in the past adapted for this study. My emphases for the study were the promotion of creativity, the identification of drama and theatre elements, and the transformation in understanding. Data was gathered from students in my class, a third eye observer, and me. Notation, description, sources for analysis, and questioning procedures were used to survey the data by looking for patterns, coding the responses, and generating findings that satisfied the research questions. I discovered that imagination is supported in my classroom but that I need to develop better strategies to show how dramatic skills affect the daily lives of students and the importance of empathy for this class as well as the others I teach.

In this study, variations in levels of transit usage to work from block groups in the Boston metropolitan area were explored. The examination of the 2000 Census data showed that there were significant differences in the transit share of the work trip at the block group level. In order to understand this variation, which is required to plan and implement transportation policy in the region, the study area was categorized into three groups based on the level of relative job accessibility. Commuting patterns in these areas were examined and compared to each other. First, the conceptual and measurement issues surrounding accessibility are reviewed. Next, travel time impedance functions were developed using the journey to work data from Census Transportation Planning Package (CTPP) 2000, considering both transit and auto travel time between all origin-destination pairs in the Boston Metropolitan area thanks to the Central Transportation Planning Staff (CTPS), the transportation network data from Massachusetts Geographic Information Systems (MassGIS), and the job location data from Initiatives for a Competitive Inner City (ICIC).

Then, job accessibility by auto and transit were calculated based on a hypothesis that job accessibility is an important factor in determining transit mode share from both residential and workplace perspectives. Finally, the spatial robustness of the general trip distribution was examined using GIS to compare mode choice behavior in block groups with different land use characteristics: block groups in the high relative job accessibility areas, block groups in the low relative job accessibility areas, and block groups in the entire study area. The comparison led to the conclusion that it is unrealistic to think that simple models such as those developed earlier in this research could be generally applied to all block groups in the metropolitan area. The geographical analyses suggested that a disaggregate approach should be applied not only to data collection (e.g., collecting individual survey data) but also to developing mode split models in order to improve their explanatory power.

This study explores how a traditional Indian storytelling dance form crosses religious and ethnic frontiers. As a performance-oriented analysis, the Kuchipudi style of Indian classical dance will be placed in parallel with western classical ballet to discover the shared and/or distinctive characteristics, in terms of spirituality and ways of communication in both styles. The synchronisation of the two traditional styles aims to reveal how an under- standing of spirituality infused in dance can be gained whilst, at the same time, demonstrat- ing the symbolic and performative relationships between the two classical dance forms. The selected themes are the classical ballet, ‘Giselle’ (Act II) and the ‘Rasalila’, the eternal circular dance of Lord Krishna, Radha and the Gopis. These dance forms have been chosen since both have underpinning spiritual themes. Both Giselle and Rasalila depict journeys of eternal romance and unconditional love as the basis of their spiritual evocations. Giselle supports Albrecht to overcome the obstacle in his path, guarding him from death and guiding his realisation of the value of true love. Krishna imparts the truth of comprehensive love and surrenders which is the singular pathway to ultimate bliss or ‘ananda’. The two performers explore the two sets of characters by remaining within the discipline of their respective art form, creating an unusual and challenging approach to these conventional stories. Through their interpretations, the dancers endeavour to transport the audience to a realm of spirituality. This project questions the different approaches to belief as practised in Hindu dance and classical ballet. The project also explores nuances of a famous and popular feature of the Kuchipudi repertoire, the plate and the pot dance. Here the dancer balances a pot full of water on her head while, simultaneously, executing rhythmic steps on the brass plate. Along with exhibiting the skills and concentration of the devoted performer, this sequence symbolically represents the elevation of the spirit to another state of endurance through the proficiency of the dancer. Is there an equivalent spiritual immersion found in the exquisite devotion of Giselle or in the precision requires of the ballet dancer? Whilst acknowledging cultural, geographic and historical differences, the placement of the two classical dance forms side by side aims to uncover and explore the spiritual imperatives of both forms.

While theoretical models of transgender identity development exist, theoretical models of post-transition social identity development are limited, and theoretical models of transgender individuals transitioning in later life are absent. As such, the purpose of this study is to explore the experience of transgender individuals coming out later in life, often after decades of hiding. Their experiences give voice to the trans community to define self-fulfillment as a transgender person post-transition. Additionally, this study explores the obstacles transgender elders navigate in middle and later life.

Using a semi-structured interview guide with 42 transgender elders 55 years and older, respondents constructed chronological narratives of their lived experiences. The data was analyzed using Charmaz’ (2004) Constructionist Grounded Theory method. The findings from this study support Breakwell’s (1986) Identity Process Theory (IPT) and explain how the study participants coped with threatened identities (Breakwell, 1983).

Additionally, the findings explain how Breakwell’s theory of identity integration and Amiot et al.’s (2007) theory of discrete stages of change lead to integrated social identities. The model that emerged in the findings expands the scope of social identity integration. The model I propose, Reflexive Authenticity, expands by adding an additional stage. Therefore, increasing to five stages of social identity development and implement action/interaction strategies with conditions and consequences at each stage.

Qualitative analysis of interview narratives revealed two distinct participant categories: Compartmentalized Social Identity and Integrated Social Identity. The essential difference between the two groups was participation in transgender advocacy or activism to support and mobilize the transgender community. This study sheds new light on the post-transition phase and the role that reflexive authenticity plays in transgender individuals’ integrated social identity. The theoretical implications suggest that political activity and commitment to building social and political acceptance of the transgender community are important facilitators of developing an integrated social identity.

The transgender elders in this study described early coping mechanisms they used to protect threatened core identities, the obstacles and barriers they faced along the way, and their journeys toward living authentically. These findings have important implications for the development of future research, policies, and interventions that support transgender individuals.

Resumen
This document gives an account of my artistic efforts in creating my thesis film Fathers and Sons. This document includes sections that cover the writing, casting, production design, principal photography, and editing of my film. I give special attention to the writing process in Chapter 2, because of its personal significance to my growth as a filmmaker. This chapter details the evolution of my original story concept from a drama to a comedy. The ultimate goal of my film was to create a personal work of art. This document self-reflects on how well I was able to achieve this goal, and what I learned along the way.
