Resumen
Peritextual Borderlands: La querelle des femmes and the Early Modern Book Market The article investigates the roles played by printers, publishers and book traders in la querelle des femmes, the literary debate about women that took place in Europe in the early modern period. I discuss what Gerard Genette calls the peritext, as a section of the printed book where the interests of authors, printers, publishers and traders intersect. After discussing the English Swetnam controversy of 1615-1617 from the perspective of the literary market, I turn to the French poet Louise Labé and her work OEuvres, which was printed by Jean de Tournes in Lyon in 1555. In analysing three peritexts in OEuvres – the title page, the royal privelege and a laudatory poem by another, anonymous poet – it becomes clear that these peritexts carry messages on many different levels. They can be read as commercial, political and personal messages, making them highly complex aspects of the book. In conclusion, I argue that the organisation of the early modern book market is an important and heretofore largely neglected aspect of la querelle des femmes, and that the commercial logic of this book market in certain cases seems to work to support la querelle des femmes and women authors.

Resumen
Recent Research into Early modern social groups in which women gained access to literary language has focused on the coteries in which they learned to perform alongside men, improvising poems later printed in books.1 The typical coterie in Italy, through which women such as Veronica Franco made their way into print, was the humanist academy centered around a court or a group of urban noblemen, such as the Venier academy in Venice. In sixteenth-century France such groups took two forms: the provincial salon attended by professional men—humanist lawyers, diplomats, doctors, publishers—as in Lyon and Poitiers, and the aristocratic salons linked to the court.

Resumen
in his 1569 Epistola qua ad multas multorum amicorum respondet de suae typographiae statu nominatimque de suo thesauro linguae graecae, the Parisian printer Henri II Estienne decries the participation of women in the book trade: “But beyond all those evils which have now been brought on by the ignorance of printers, male and female (for this only remains to add to the disgrace of the art, that even the little ladies have been practicing it), who will doubt that new evils are daily to be expected?” As Estienne's comments testify, one of the most unusualfeatures of the Renaissance and Counter Reformation book trade was the existence of several women printers and publishers. While their contemporaries were well aware of the presence of women in the printing profession, bibliographers and historians have largely neglected the history of their labors.

Resumen
Women's work has often been portrayed as unskilled and lowpaid labor done for the benefit of others. But the role of female enterprise in eighteenth-century Lyon presents another dimension: non-guild women workers who secured control of raw materials, labor, and distribution networks within an underground economy. In an unusual twist of fortune,a small but significant number of women in the silk,hat-making, and button-making industries turned to their own benefit the advantages customarily provided to male entrepreneurs. These women workers stole materials from the guild workshops in which they were employed. Having learned the technology needed to manufacture silk, hats, and buttons from guild masters, they set up clandestine workshops and trained their own workers. Even in the face of official guild protest, their low prices and competent workmanship induced some masters to buy their goods to reduce the cost of their own products. The women used a set of capitalist practices to survive in a difficult transitional era of superficially regulated norms.

Resumen
Objective. To estimate the changes of voltage electrocardiographic criteria of the left ventricular hypertrophy in arterial hypertension in subjects of different gender. Design and methods. The study included 94 hypertensive patients (55 males, 39 females). Mean age was 51 ± 6 years. Based on gender and the presence of left ventricular hypertrophy patients were divided into four groups. Results. There were significant differences of indices of Sokolow-Lyon and Cornell in males with I and II stages of arterial hypertension (р = 0,012 and р = 0,017, respectively). The same differences were found in females with I and II stages of arterial hypertension (р = 0,037 and р = 0,001, respectively). Specificity was 92 % for both indices, and the sensitivity was 26 % for Sokolow-Lyon index, and 39 % for Cornell index. In women sensitivity was 0 and 72 % for Sokolow-Lyon and Cornell indices, respectively, and specificity was more than 90 % for both criteria. Conclusion. Gender differences should be considered when voltage electrocardiographic criteria of the left ventricular hypertrophy are assessed in hypertensive patients.

Resumen
AbstractThis essay discusses a novel contribution to the Renaissance debate over women. In 1551, William Thomas translated a brief but significant moment from Livy’sHistory of Romeconcerning the repeal of the Lex Oppia, a sumptuary law targeting women in particular. Thomas thereby adapted one of the most arresting examples of women’s engagement in Roman politics. The episode shows the women of Rome taking to the streets to demand the law’s repeal, forcing senators and tribunes alike to acknowledge their protest. By contextualizing Thomas’s translation amid Quattrocento debates over female apparel and contemporary, female-centric works printed by Thomas Berthelet, Thomas’s translation emerges as a clear though hitherto-unacknowledged intervention in the Englishquerelle des femmes.

Resumen
In 1828, as the movement to improve educational opportunities for American women was gaining in prominence, Catharine Beecher approached first Mary Lyon, and a year later Lyon's associate Zilpah Grant, to join her as instructor at Hartford Female Seminary. Consonant with the era of optimistic reform in which she lived, Beecher believed Hartford could change the world, so she wanted the most well-known female educators on board. The key to Hartford's influence was to be the type of students it attracted. Beecher wrote to Grant that a “woman of piety and active benevolence, with wealth which enables her to take the lead in society, can do more good than another of equally exalted character without it.” Lyon and Grant both declined.

ObjectiveTo address the frequency of myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG) antibody (Ab) in an unselected large cohort of adults with MS.MethodsThis is a cross-sectional study in 2 MS expert centers (Lyon and Strasbourg University Hospitals, France) between December 1, 2017, and June 31, 2018. Patients aged ≥18 years with a definite diagnosis of MS according to 2010 McDonald criteria were tested for MOG-Ab by using a cell-based assay (CBA) in Lyon and subsequently included. Positive samples were tested by investigators blinded to the first result with a second assay in a different laboratory (Barcelona, Spain) by using the same plasmid and secondary Ab.ResultsSerum samples from 685 consecutive patients with MS were analyzed for MOG-Ab. Median disease duration at sampling was 11.5 (interquartile range, 5.8–17.7) years, and 72% were women. Two (0.3%) patients resulted to be MOG-Ab-positive. The 2 patients were women aged 42 and 38 at disease onset and were diagnosed with secondary and primary progressive forms of MS, respectively. This positive result was confirmed by the CBA in Barcelona.ConclusionOur findings indicate that MOG-Ab are exceptional in MS phenotype, suggesting that the MOG-Ab testing should not be performed in typical MS presentation.

Abstract The premier of Empire in January 2015 drew 9.8 million viewers and became FOX's highest-rated series debut in three years. In this episode, we are introduced to the terminally-ill CEO of Empire Entertainment, Lucious Lyon (Terrence Howard), who must decide which of his three sons will inherit the family business. To further complicate the decision, his ex-wife, Cookie (Taraji P. Henson), is released from prison after 17 years. The strength of the performances from the main cast, and those of celebrity guest stars, bolster the drama that unfolds, explaining why Empire was incredibly popular with audiences, and black audiences in particular. We examine the series's representations of blackness through focus group interviews with 31 black women viewers, exploring how they made sense of Cookie and compared her to black female leads on other series. Our interviews reveal that Cookie's complexities inspire identification and anxiety, engage broader debates about popular culture representations, and clarify black women's desires to see multifaceted images of themselves and their communities on television.

Resumen
Abstract This contribution discusses the hitherto overlooked ownership of the earliest printed books (incunabula) by Netherlandish female religious communities of tertiaries and canonesses regular connected to the religious reform movement of the Devotio moderna. Studies of book ownership and book collections in these communities have tended to focus on manuscripts. From the last decades of the fifteenth century onwards, however, these religious women increasingly came in contact with printed books, even though the involvement of the Devotio moderna with the printing press was limited. The discussion focuses on the channels via which tertiaries and canonesses acquired books produced by commercially operating printers, the ways in which incunabula affected what these (semi-)religious women read, as well as the ratio between printed books in Latin and the vernacular, and their function(s) within these communities. Thus the essay intends to sketch a preliminary image of the role of incunabula in female convents, and advocates a more inclusive approach of female religious book ownership.

Resumen
This study aims to explore the social impact measurement (SIM) methods and the associated challenges from the perspective of women empowerment NGOs in Turkey. Ebrahim and Rangan (2010) define social impact as "a logic chain of results in which organizational inputs and activities lead to a series of outputs, outcomes and ultimately to a set of societal impacts", which is a function of measuring the degree of project's success on the way to the women's economic empowerment in this case. Available consultancy and outsourced services on these activities are also limited in Turkey, and the existing services and frameworks are generally performed with manual procedures. Hence, these NPOs need methodologic and practical digital tools to efficiently monitor, assess, and measure those projects' outputs, outcomes, and social impact. These monitoring and measurement activities also matter in the companies or organizations who will invest in these projects to assure the outcomes' worthiness. Despite its significance, there is a lack of human and financial resources and technical support, resulting in ineffective measurement. Research conducted by Yalçın and Güner (2016) on the women's empowerment NPOs in Turkey pointed out an urgent improvement needs since NPOS still face challenges in applying the tools developed in the wide-ocean literature of the social impact measurement. In addition to that, the expectations from non-profit organizations to prove their social impact are rising every day. This brings about a need to assure their sponsors about their good acts and results in order to continue receiving funds from both their present and future donors, even though NPOs' perception towards themselves is the exact opposite of competition among each other (Arvidson & Lyon, 2014). However, the need for social impact arises not only from the funders' satisfaction, but it also emerges for their self-evaluation as Arvidson and Lyon agreed (2014). What is more, NPOs' recognition of how their social value and benefits are in the eyes of their stakeholders like the society and other beneficiaries is indispensable (Polonsky, Grau & McDonald, 2016). AbstractThe aim of this article is to analyse how female working conditions and remunerations were affected by the structural and economic crises that impacted Lyon's silk industry in the second half of the eighteenth century. It concentrates, at a micro level, on different circumstances in which sources allow us to see women and their families coping with economic uncertainty: small-scale wage conflicts with their employers, clandestine work and illicit activities. This essay studies how women's work was a real issue in power conflicts and a tool for household adaptive strategies during periods of crisis.

Resumen
Drawing on recent technical analyses of an exquisite embroidered French alms purse that now resides at the Musée des Tissus et Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Lyon, this article argues that the purse, which was probably embroidered in Paris in the early 1340s, represents the culmination of the efforts of dozens of men and women on three different continents. Some of the women who worked in the fields where the flax was grown were simple day laborers, but many of the other men and women—both rural peasants and urban artisans—possessed specific technical knowledge and manual skills that could take years to perfect. Indeed, it took a global village of many talented individuals to create a fourteenth-century luxury alms purse from Paris. The article also explores the ecological impact of the extraction and processing of some of the raw materials that were employed in the purse.

Resumen
Aim. To determine the features of patients with arterial hypertension (AH) with a discrepancy of electrocardiographic, including vectorcardiographic (VCG) and echocardiographic conclusions about the presence of left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH). Materials and methods. 140 patients with AH were examined (mean age 59.8±12.0 years, 33.6% of men). The Sokolov- Lyon criterion, the Cornell product, the sum of the amplitudes of the R wave in lead X and the S wave in lead Z of the synthesized vectorcardiogram (RX+SZ) and the amplitude of the maximal QRS vector (MQRS) were analyzed. Left ventriclular myocardial mass (LVMM) was calculated using the ASE formula, LVMM/height2.7 more than 44 g/m2.7 in women and more than 48 g/m2.7 in men was considered a criterion for LVH.Results. In patients with AH, pathological RX+SZ and MQRS values were significantly more frequent compared with the Sokolov-Lyon criterion and the Cornell product. Pathological values of RX+SZ and MQRS were met both in patients with an increased and with a normal indexed LVMM. Patients with "true-positive" VCG findings compared with "false-negative" had significantly larger values of the relative wall thickness, LVMM and indexed LVMM. Patients with “false positive” VCG findings compared with “true-negative” were more likely to have left ventricular diastolic dysfunction (90% and 68%, respectively). Patients with the presence of VCG criteria for LVH, both with normal and with an increased indexed LVMM, were characterized by higher values of systolic blood pressure and higher values of the QRS duration. Conclusion. In patients with arterial hypertension, pathological values of vectorcardiographic indices were significantly more frequent compared with the Sokolov-Lyon criterion and the Cornell product. VCG indices allowed to separate groups of patients with the presence and absence of diastolic dysfunction of the left ventricle, as well as groups of patients with normal and elevated values of systolic blood pressure.

Resumen
Fabry disease (FD) is an X-linked lysosomal storage disorder resulting from the deficiency or absence of the alpha galactosidase A enzyme. Organic involvement in men is well known, but in women it is controversial, partly due to the random X-chromosomes inactivation (Lyon hypothesis). The aim of this study was to describe the organic involvement in women at the time of FD diagnosis. A descriptive, cross-sectional and multicenter study was carried out. Thirty-five women with FD from three reference centers in Argentina were evaluated. The mean age of the whole group (n=35) was 26.6±16.9 years; 22 were adult (over 18) and 13 were paediatric patients. Enzymatic activity was performed in 29/35 patients, which was normal in 24/29 (82.8%). Seven different mutations of the GLA gene were found. The results showed urinary protein loss (45.7%) and decreased glomerular filtration rate (31.4%), mainly in adults. And also, cornea verticillata (56.5%), peripheral neuropathy (51.4%), cardiovascular manifestations (31.4%), hearing loss (20%), angiokeratomas (20%), central nervous system (17.1%), and gastrointestinal involvement (14.3%). Organic compromise in females with FD may be as severe as in men. This analysis has demonstrated a significant proportion of women with signs, symptoms, and major organic involvement at FD diagnosis.

Resumen
Introduction Patients with left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) diagnosed by electrocardiogram (ECG) have increased mortality and higher risk for life-threatening cardiovascular disease. ECGs offer an opportunity to identify patients with increased risk for potential risk-modifying therapy. We developed a novel, quick, easy to use ECG screening criterion (Seamens’ Sign) for LVH. This new criterion was defined as the presence of QRS complexes touching or overlapping in two contiguous precordial leads. Methods This study was a retrospective chart review of 2,184 patient records of patients who had an ECG performed in the emergency department and a transthoracic echocardiogram performed within 90 days. The primary outcome was whether Seamens’ Sign was noninferior in confirming LVH compared to other common diagnostic criteria. Test characteristics were calculated for each of the LVH criteria. Inter-rater agreement was assessed on a random sample using Cohen’s Kappa. Results Median age was 63, 52% of patients were male and there was a 35% prevalence of LVH by transthoracic echocardiogram (TTE). Nine percent were positive for LVH on ECG based on Seamens’ Sign. Seamens’ Sign had a specificity of 0.92. Tests assessing noninferiority indicated Seamens’ Sign was non-inferior to all criteria (p < 0.001) except for Cornell criterion for women (p = 0.98). Seamens’ Sign had 90% (0.81–1.00) inter-rater agreement, the highest of all criteria in this study. Conclusion When compared to both the Sokolow-Lyon criteria and the Cornell criterion for men, Seamens’ Sign is noninferior in ruling in LVH on ECG. Additionally, Seamens’ Sign has higher inter-rater agreement compared to both Sokolow-Lyon criteria as well as the Cornell criteria for men and women, perhaps related to its ease of use.

This article explores how shared multi-purposes spaces shaped the productive and reproductive lives of young men and women. The open house nature of their community as a physical and conceptual structure profoundly impacted the ways in which young people met, experimented with intimacy, and took steps towards marriage. The multi-purpose and multi-residence buildings in which they lived and worked fostered intense interaction with neighbours and employers through shared spaces and fluid use of those spaces. Court cases from Lyon between 1660 and 1760 reveal that the ‘open house’ allowed young couples and their communities to watch, calibrate, regulate, discipline and care for youthful intimacy and its (reproductive) consequences.

Resumen
Fabry disease is an X-linked lysosomal storage disorder resulting from the deficiency or absence of the enzyme alpha galactosidase A; this defect leads to the systemic accumulation of globotriaosylceramide and its metabolites. Organic involvement in men is well known, but in women it is controversial, mainly due to the random X-chromosome inactivation in each of their cells (Lyon hypothesis). This would explain why women (heterozygotes) present a wide variability in the severity of their phenotype. The manifestations are multisystemic and begin in early childhood, reaching a severe compromise in adulthood. Typical acroparesthesia in hands and feet, gastrointestinal symptoms, angiokeratomas, dyshidrosis, hearing loss, arrhythmias, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, cerebrovascular accidents, and renal failure can be observed. Nephropathy is one of the major complications of Fabry disease. Glomerular and vascular changes are present before progression to overt proteinuria and decreased glomerular filtration rate, even in pediatric patients. A case of incipient renal involvement in a girl with classic Fabry disease is reported.

Resumen
In this article more than 200 religious autobiographies written by Dutch orthodox pietist men and women are analyzed. Although hardly studied so far, these texts were a substantial part of all printed Dutch egodocuments, especially in the period 1850–1950. The authors are nearly all from the lowest ranks of Dutch society, and therefore their texts offer unique information about life in villages and small towns in the Netherlands. This form of autobiographical writing goes back to the seventeenth century, and transformed from an oral culture to a written and printed culture as, from around 1800, the number of local publishers and printers grew. The role of middlemen, such as Reformed ministers, is also studied, as many of the authors were semi-literate. Information about editions and print runs show how popular some of these books were, and still are. Traces left by readers give additional information about ownership and circulation.https://doi.org/10.21827/ejlw.7.294

Resumen
Objective: Our aim was to evaluate the impact of early redosing of natalizumab after delivery on the risk of post-partum relapses in six women with very active multiple sclerosis (MS). Methods: We undertook a retrospective analysis of data collected prospectively in the Lyon MS Cohort. Results: The annualized relapse rate (ARR) in the year before natalizumab treatment was 4.2 ±0.4, which decreased to 0.4 ±0.6 during the treatment period. The mean time between natalizumab withdrawal and onset of pregnancy was 9 months; one pregnancy was exposed to one infusion. The ARR between natalizumab withdrawal and onset of pregnancy was 1.8 ±0.7. Six relapses occurred before onset of pregnancy and seven during pregnancy. Natalizumab was restarted 7.8 days after delivery (between day 2 and 8 for five patients and on day 23 for one). Only one patient, who had restarted natalizumab 2 days after delivery, had a relapse 2 weeks later. The others five patients were relapse free after a mean of 14.2 ±9.1 months of follow-up. Conclusion: Despite a high risk of post-partum relapses, early redosing of natalizumab led to a complete disappearance of disease activity in all but one patient. These data suggest that natalizumab could be a good candidate for preventing early post-partum relapses.

Resumen
Small geographic areas with lower mammography screening participation rates may reflect gaps in screening efforts. Our objective was to use spatial analyses to understand disparities in mammography screening use and to identify factors to increase its uptake in areas that need it in Lyon metropolitan area, France. Data for screened women between the ages of 50 and 74 were analyzed. Census blocks of screened and non screened women were extracted from the mammography screening programme 2015–2016 dataset. We used spatial regression models, within a generalized additive framework to determine clusters of census blocks with significantly higher prevalence of non-participation of mammography screening. Smoothed risk maps were crude and adjusted on the following covariates: deprivation index and opportunistic screening. Among 178,002 women aged 50 to 74, 49.9% received mammography screening. As hypothesized, women living in highly deprived census blocks had lower participation rates compared to less deprived blocks, 45.2% vs. 51.4% p < 0.001. Spatial analyses identified four clusters, one located in an urban area and three in suburban areas. Moreover, depending on the location of the cluster, the influence came from different variables. Knowing the impact of site-specific risk factors seems to be important for implementing an appropriate prevention intervention.

Resumen
The International Agency for Research on Cancer established a causal link between asbestos exposure and ovarian cancer. However, the exposure frequency and histological characteristics of asbestos-associated ovarian cancers remain to be investigated in detail. This multicenter case–case study assessed the asbestos exposure in ovarian carcinoma (OC) patients, alongside its association with histological subtype. Women were recruited in four hospitals in Lyon, France. Histological reports were reviewed by a pathologist. Patient and family members’ data were collected by phone-based questionnaires. Asbestos exposure was defined as direct (occupational and environmental) and indirect (via parents, partners, and children). An industrial hygienist assessed the probability and level of exposure. The 254 enrolled patients (mean age 60 years) reported having an average of 2.3 different jobs (mean working duration 29 years). The prevalence of direct and indirect asbestos exposure was 13% (mean exposure duration 11 years) and 46%, respectively. High-grade serous carcinoma accounted for 73% of all OCs and 82% of histological subtypes in women with direct exposure. After adjustment on a familial history of OC, no significant associations between asbestos exposure (direct and/or indirect) and high-grade serous carcinoma were found. Women with OC had a high prevalence of asbestos exposure. Establishing risk profiles, as reported here, is important in facilitating compensation for asbestos-related OCs and for the surveillance of women at risk.

Resumen
Abstract Objective Most prenatal screening programs for toxoplasmosis use immunoassays in serum samples of pregnant women. Few studies assess the accuracy of screening tests in dried blood spots, which are of easy collection, storage, and transportation. The goals of the present study are to determine the performance and evaluate the agreement between an immunoassay of dried blood spots and a reference test in the serum of pregnant women from a population-based prenatal screening program for toxoplasmosis in Brazil. Methods A cross-sectional study was performed to compare the immunoassays Imunoscreen Toxoplasmose IgM and Imunoscreen Toxoplasmose IgG (Mbiolog Diagnósticos, Ltda., Contagem, Minas Gerais, Brazil)in dried blood spots with the enzyme-linked fluorescent assay (ELFA, BioMérieux S.A., Lyon, France) reference standard in the serum of pregnant women from Minas Gerais Congenital Toxoplasmosis Control Program. Results The dried blood spot test was able to discriminate positive and negative results of pregnant women when compared with the reference test, with an accuracy of 98.2% for immunoglobulin G (IgG), and of 95.8% for immunoglobulin M (IgM). Conclusion Dried blood samples are easy to collect, store, and transport, and they have a good performance, making this a promising method for prenatal toxoplasmosis screening programs in countries with continental dimensions, limited resources, and a high prevalence of toxoplasmosis, as is the case of Brazil.

Resumen
AIMS: To describe the experience of the Toxoplasmosis Laboratory of Infectious Disease Department University of Pavia, IRCCS Foundation, San Matteo Polyclinic Pavia, a reference laboratory for diagnosis of toxoplasmosis, in the investigation of pregnant women with suspected acute toxoplasmosis. METHODS: All sera were tested with LIAISON® Toxo IgM and IgG II, Toxo IgG Avidity II kits (DiaSorin, Saluggia, Italy), VIDAS Toxo IgG II and Toxo IgG Avidity (bioMérieux, Marcy l’Etoile, France ), IgM ISAGA (bioMérieux, Marcy l’Etoile, France) and ETI-TOXOK-A reverse PLUS (DiaSorin, Saluggia, Italy). When required (IgG negative/IgM positive women), IgG/IgM Western Blot II (LDBio, Lyon, France) was also performed. Prenatal diagnosis on amniotic fluid was done by nested PCR. All newborns were followed up to one year of age in order to exclude or confirm the diagnosis of congenital toxoplasmosis. All pregnant women with acute or undetermined stages of infection were treated. RESULTS: In the course of 2007, 236 women with suspected acute (IgM-positive) Toxoplasma infection were followed up. In the reference laboratory, 91 women had test results indicating acute toxoplasmosis, and 10 had undetermined status of infection. These 101 patients represented 42.8% of the 236 women referred. Acute toxoplasmosis could be excluded in the remaining 135 patients, of whom 53 were non-immune. Three infected newborns were observed, all from mothers tested for the first time during the third trimester of pregnancy. CONCLUSIONS: The role of a reference laboratory in suspected toxoplasmosis acquired during pregnancy is crucial to date the infection and discriminate between seroconversion and false positive anti-Toxoplasma IgM antibodies. This avoids unnecessary anxiety in immune women, provides correct counseling about primary prevention and periodic testing for seronegative ones, and allows early treatment and follow-up of pregnant women with acute infection and their newborns.

Resumen
Background. Left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) regardless of other risk factors may be associated with an increased risk of mortality from cardiovascular diseases. Therefore, timely diagnosis for LVH is important in order to avoid possible complications. One of the simplest and cheapest methods to diagnose LVH is electrocardiography (ECG). Although a number of ECG criteria for LVH is known, their reliability varies in many studies.Aim. To evaluate the reliability of ECG criteria for LVH based on transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) data.Methods. The study included all consecutive patients in Kaunas Clinical Hospital Department of Cardiology from December 2019 until March 2020 and from September until October 2020, after applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The sensitivity and specificity of the ECG criteria for LVH were assessed based on TTE measurements performed during the same inpatient setting. The reliability of the ECG criteria for LVH was assessed using ROC curves. Reliability differences in gender, age and nutritional status groups were assessed using ANOVA statistical method.Results. Data from 95 patients were analyzed (63.2% were women and 36.8% were men). The sensitivity, specificity and AUC of Sokolow–Lyon criterion were 9.38%, 85.71% and 0.44 (p = 0.034), R in aVL – 6.25%, 90.48% and 0.51 (p = 0.038), Cornell – 21.88%, 100 % and0.69 (p = 0.084), Cornell product – 31.25%, 95.24% and 0.72 (p = 0.070), Peguero–Lo Presti – 31.25%, 85.71% and 0.68 (p = 0.053), respectively. No statistically significant differences were observed among the individual gender, age and nutritional status groups.Conclusions. Sokolow–Lyon and RaVL criteria were not statistically significantly reliable in LVH diagnosis compared to TTE, unlike the Cornell, Cornell product, and Peguero–Lo Presti criteria.

Resumen
The development of Colombia's import/export economy was accompanied by numerous violent conflicts from the second half of the nineteenth century onward. Craftsmen were among those who fiercely opposed the model of ‘outward-looking development’ (desarrollo hacia afuera). With independence this group initially increased in number during the first half of the nineteenth century. Around 1870, their proportion of the gainfully employed male population may have come to about ten per cent. More than sixty per cent of all working women were involved in handicraft activities. Artesanos, as craftsmen were listed in Colombian population statistics, were one of the most wide-spread occupational classes until the turn of the century. In nearly all towns and cities there were tanners, shoemakers, weavers, dyers, tailors, blacksmiths, bricklayers, carpenters, joiners, and potters, as well as the newly introduced trades of lithographers and letterpress printers, to provide for the local consumers’ demands. However, artisans differed from region to region in terms of quantity (absolutely and as a percentage of the total population), composition of professions, proportion of women and children, as well as in their ethnicity. Moreover, a largely rural textile industry (based on family concerns) developed near Pasto as well as in Santander and Boyacá and became famous beyond these regions. In contrast to urban manufacture in Bogotá and Bucaramanga dominated by mestizoes, and that of Cali and the Atlantic coast dominated by mulattos, these weavers were mainly of Indian descent. In Tolima and in parts of Antioquia and Santander palm straw hats (‘Panama hats’) were produced - mainly by Indian women. This headgear was priced so reasonably that the hats were exported in large quantities to the West Indies and the USA.

Resumen
PurposeThe purpose of this historical paper is to examine arguably the most controversial advertising campaign of all time. Critics have condemned tobacco marketer George Washington Hill's “Reach for a Lucky Instead of a Sweet” campaign in the late 1920s and early 1930s for its explicit attempt to encourage smoking among women by linking cigarettes with themes of slenderness and youth.Design/methodology/approachThe paper relies on primary sources obtained chiefly from the important advertising trade journals Printers' Ink and Advertising and Selling. Many sources, in turn, pointed to historically significant advertisements from the “Reach for a Lucky […]” campaign, some of which are included among the findings. Tentative themes of analysis were: the strategic motives behind the “Reach for a Lucky […]” campaign and the campaign's outcomes and consequences, both positive and negative.FindingsHill aggressively pursued the female smoker of the 1920s, as did other cigarette marketers of the period. However, the paper's findings support a conclusion that Hill had additional motives for attacking “sweets,” other than merely encouraging women to smoke with a slenderness appeal. Hill's primary strategic concern must have been how to address the extraordinarily competitive situation he faced with the other “big four” cigarette brands.Originality/valueFocusing on the strategic intent of the campaign and its outcomes and consequences, findings strongly suggest that prior perspectives and conclusions found in advertising history texts regarding this infamous campaign often fail to reveal its significance as an historical event.

Resumen
Angela Carter was an English fiction writer and journalist. Her female protagonists often take an empowered roles where they rise up against oppression and fight for both sexual and political equality. The actions of these women are direct reflections of the feminist movement that took place in the 1970s. The concepts within this movement relating specifically to the ideologies of radical- libertarian feminist, and regarding the extent to which she promotes feminist due to her style, referred to as "Galm-Rock" feminism. Carter began experimenting with writing fairy tales in 1970, which coincided with the period of second wave feminism in the Unites States. The majority of Angela Carter’s work revolve around a specific type of feminism, radical libertarian feminism and her critique of the patriarchal role that have been placed on women. In this article, the main concentrate is on heroine’s internalized consciousness which echoes in their behavior. All of the female protagonists in carter’s short stories; such as The Courtship of Mr. Lyon, The Tiger’s Bride, The snow child and mainly in The Bloody chamber have similar characteristics with different conditions, in which they are represented in a very negative light with less than ideal roles. In these stories, the protagonist is a young girl who has many conflicts with love and desire. Carter attempts to encourage women to do something about this degrading representation.

Resumen
Characterising dynamics of Influenza A Viruses (IAV) within-host evolution is an active field of research which may lead to a better understanding of viral pathogenesis. Using a pregnant mouse model, a study has recently suggested that immune modulation during pregnancy could promote the emergence of IAV quasispecies with increased virulence. Herein, we assess the clinical relevance of these findings in humans. We studied IAV intra-host diversity (ihD) in pregnant (n = 36) and non-pregnant (n = 23) women hospitalized in Lyon for IAV infection (01/2015–05/2018). Whole IAV genomes present in nasopharyngeal samples were sequenced in duplicate to analyze reproducible intra-host single nucleotide variants (ihSNV). Counts, relative frequencies and locations of ihSNV were used as indicators of ihD. The median ihSNV/kb counts per segment were between 0 and 1.3. There was >81% ihSNV at relative frequencies between 1–5% for H1N1 and >51% for H3N2 IAV. No significant difference was noted between pregnant and non-pregnant women when considering all or only non-synonymous ihSNV. Seven convergent non-synonymous ihSNV were found; none were significantly associated with pregnancy. These results suggest that modulation of the immune system during pregnancy in humans does not impact IAV ihD, in contrast to mice.

ObjectivesTo assess the comparative accuracy of risk assessment models (RAMs) to identify women during pregnancy and the early postnatal period who are at increased risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE).DesignSystematic review following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines.Data sourcesMEDLINE, Embase, Cochrane Library and two research registers were searched until February 2021.Eligibility criteriaAll validation studies that examined the accuracy of a multivariable RAM (or scoring system) for predicting the risk of developing VTE in women who are pregnant or in the puerperium (within 6 weeks post-delivery).Data extraction and synthesisTwo authors independently selected and extracted data. Risk of bias was appraised using PROBAST (Prediction model Risk Of Bias ASsessment Tool). Data were synthesised without meta-analysis.ResultsSeventeen studies, comprising 19 externally validated RAMs and 1 internally validated model, met the inclusion criteria. The most widely evaluated RAMs were the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists guidelines (six studies), American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists guidelines (two studies), Swedish Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology guidelines (two studies) and the Lyon score (two studies). In general, estimates of sensitivity and specificity were highly variable with sensitivity estimates ranging from 0% to 100% for RAMs that were applied to antepartum women to predict antepartum or postpartum VTE and 0% to 100% for RAMs applied postpartum to predict postpartum VTE. Specificity estimates were similarly diverse ranging from 28% to 98% and 5% to 100%, respectively.ConclusionsAvailable data suggest that external validation studies have weak designs and limited generalisability, so estimates of prognostic accuracy are very uncertain.PROSPERO registration numberCRD42020221094.

Resumen
Aim. To study the distribution of cardiovascular risk factors, target organ damage, associated clinical conditions and to stratify the 10-year risk of arterial hypertension complications in menopausal females depending on presence of inappropriately high left ventricular mass. Methods. 107 females from city of Kazan aged 42-59 years entered the study, including 11 women with normal blood pressure, 16 patients with high normal blood pressure, and 80 patients with hypertension according to All-Russia scientific Society of Cardiologists classification (2010) with disease duration of 0-34 years. Mean age of patients with hypertension was 51.4±4.0 years. Patients with secondary hypertension were excluded from the study. All patients underwent a questionnaire survey, physical examination, biochemical blood test, ECG, echocardiography, and cervical extracranial vessel ultrasonography. Actual left ventricle mass was calculated according to R.B. Devereux et al. (1977) and was adjusted to the body surface area. Proper left ventricle mass was defined by G. Simone et al. (1998). Disproportion coefficient was calculated as a ratio of actual left ventricle mass to proper left ventricle mass. Left ventricle hypertrophy was diagnosed using the Sokolow-Lyon index and left ventricle mass index ≥ 110 g/m2 (Echo-signs of left ventricle hypertrophy). Results. In menopausal women, inappropriately high left ventricular mass was associated with significantly (р 0.05, Fisher exact test) higher frequency of obesity, especially its abdominal type, as well as target organ damage, including Echo-signs of left ventricle hypertrophy, very high added 10-year risk of developing arterial hypertension complications. It was also associated with significantly (р 0.05, the U-criterion) higher mean values of waist circumference, waist to hip circumference ratio, body mass index, total number of damaged target organs and 10-year risk for developing arterial hypertension complications. Conclusion. Distinguishing the patients with inappropriately high left ventricular mass among menopausal women is important for planning the measures to prevent cardiovascular events.

Resumen
Abstract In 1907, a 28-year-old Norwegian pharmacist-chemist arrived in Paris to work with Marie Curie at the Radium Institute. Like many women at the time, Ellen Gleditsch was attracted to the newly discovered phenomenon of radioactivity and wished take part in exciting scientific endeavour. Working with the Nobel Laureate Marie Curie was a unique opportunity for the ambitious young chemist, whose skills in mineral analyses led to her being accepted into the otherwise fully staffed laboratory. By all accounts, Ellen Gleditsch appears to have been one of the first women associated with IUPAC. In 1921 she was the Norwegian representative of the committee working on the Tables Annuelles de Constantes et Données Numériques de Chimie, de Physique et de Technologie [1], published under the auspices of IUPAC with the agreement of the International Research Council. In the following year she was a member of the Commission on Nomenclature of Inorganic Chemistry during its meeting in Lyon [2]. In 1947 Gleditsch became a full member of the Joint Commission of Standards and Units of Radioactivity, joining her friends Frédéric and Irène Joliot-Curie in this capacity, and all three continued to be members until the Commission’s dissolution in 1955 [3]. IUPAC was the mother union of this Joint Commission, and directly linked with International Council of Scientific Unions (ICSU).

The International Journal Of Alcohol And Drug Research, 3(1), 51-61. doi:10.7895/ijadr.v3i1.117Aims: To determine 1) the relationship between T-ACE score and maternal self-reported alcohol use prior to and during pregnancy, and 2) the relationship between T-ACE score and maternal demographics, mental health and life circumstances.Design: Prospective, population-based cohort study.Setting: Three urban maternity clinics in Calgary, Canada.Participants: 1,929 pregnant women attended by family physicians at low-risk maternity clinics.Measures: Women completed three standardized questionnaires over the telephone in the first and third trimesters and eight weeks post-delivery, including the T-ACE and questions about drug and alcohol use, demographics, mental health and life circumstances.Findings: 43.6% of subjects had a positive T-ACE score at intake (score 2 or greater). A positive T-ACE score was predictive of alcohol use throughout pregnancy, although most women reported no alcohol after the first trimester (93.1%). Multivariate analysis indicated that a positive T-ACE score was significantly associated with being less than 30 years of age; being Caucasian; smoking during pregnancy; having an income of less than $80,000 per annum; having a history of depression; having a history of alcohol use and binge drinking during a previous pregnancy; lower social support; and poor network orientation. Conclusions: There was a positive association between the T-ACE score and maternal self-report of alcohol use, poor mental health and poor social support. Routine use of the T-ACE to assess for risk of an alcohol-exposed pregnancy may also help identify women with complex needs who could benefit from additional prenatal support.

Resumen
Aim. To study the incidence, clinical features and predictors of postoperative myocardial infarction (MI) after lung cancer surgery.Material and methods. The retrospective analysis included 2051 patients (1373 males and 678 females, mean age, 65,5 [62-69] years), who underwent thoracotomy for non-small cell lung cancer. At the first stage, the incidence rate of postoperative MI (%) was calculated with 95% confidential interval (CI) in relation to sex, age and extent of surgery. At the second stage, the case-control study was carried out in groups with MI revealed on the first stage (n=33) and without MI (n=130), formed by individual criteria-based matching. A comparative intergroup analysis was performed and prognostic value of 60 clinical perioperative indicators was assessed by odds ratio (OR). The features associated with MI in the univariateregression model were introduced into multivariate stepwise logistic regression. Independent MI predictors was revealed.Results. The postoperative IM incidence rate amounted to 1,61 [0,67-1,76]%. MI was more frequently diagnosed in men than women (0,29%), and after pneumonectomy (3,92%) compared with less operative extent (0,37%). MI was associated with comorbidities, smoking intensity, right pneumonectomy, preoperative increase in white blood cells, neutrophils and monocytes, blood loss volume, surgery duration, postoperative heart rate, preoperative decrease in serum total protein, postoperative haemoglobin, haematocrit, red blood cells decrease, and intraoperative blood pressure (BP). By means of multivariate logistic regression, the following factors with most accurate MI prediction were established: postoperative heart rate (OR, 4,06 [95% CI 1,58-10,43]), Sokolow-Lyon index (OR, 1,54 [95% CI 1,14-2,07]), ACS-NSQIP value for cardiac complications (OR, 3,86 [95% CI 1,36-10,92]), preoperative serum total protein (OR, 0,17 [95% CI 0,040,71]) and white blood cells (CR 1,54 [95% CI 1,03-2,31]), minimal intraoperative systolic BP (OR, 0,35 [95% CI 0,15-0,83]).Conclusion. Postoperative MI incidence in lung cancer patients accounts for 1,61%. Following independent predictors for postoperative MI were established: Sokolow-Lyon index, preoperative serum total protein and leukocytes levels, ACS-NSQIP value, minimal intraoperative systolic BP and postoperative heart rate.

Resumen
Abstract Introduction The early identification of COVID-19 patients is of outmost importance in the current pandemic. As with other pathogens, presenting symptoms of SARS-CoV-2 may vary, depending on sociodemographic factors. We aimed to describe the clinical characteristics of COVID-19 patients by age/gender and to assess whether the diagnostic performance of these symptoms varied according to these variables. Methods We analysed data from a cross-sectional study involving primary care patients undergoing RT-PCR testing in Lyon, France. Among patients who tested positive, we examined whether there was an association between age/gender and various symptoms. In addition, we calculated the diagnostic performance of the most specific symptoms (smell/taste disorder). Results Among 1543 consecutive patients, 253 tested positive (16%). There were significant age/gender-related differences in symptoms. In middle-aged women, the diagnostic performance of smell/taste disorders were AUC = 0.65 [95%CI 0.59–0.71] and PPV = 72% [95%CI 53–87%], that is higher than in the entire sample (smell/taste disorders: AUC = 0.59 [95%CI 0.57–0.62] and PPV = 57% [95%CI 47–67%]. In contrast, the negative predictive values of smell/taste disorders were similar in both groups (85% [95%CI 81–89%] for middle-age women and 86% [95%CI 85–88%] for the entire sample). Conclusion We found significant age/gender-related differences in the clinical characteristics of COVID-19 patients. Screening strategies based on smell/taste disorders performed better in middle-aged women, but could not ensure a diagnosis of COVID-19 in any subgroup of patients. Future diagnostic strategies should use age/gender differentiated approaches.

Resumen
Background: Sarcoidosis is one of the leading causes of uveitis. To date, no studies have assessed the factors specifically related with recovery in ocular sarcoidosis. In this study, we aimed to determine factors associated with ocular and extraocular recovery in patients with sarcoid uveitis. Methods: A retrospective study of sarcoid uveitis, with a three-year minimum follow-up in Lyon University Hospital between December 2003 and December 2019. Patients presented biopsy-proven sarcoidosis or presumed sarcoid. Recovery was defined by a disease-free status, spontaneously or despite being off all treatments for three years or more. Results: 143 patients were included: 110 with biopsy-proven and 33 with presumed sarcoid uveitis. Seventy-one percent were women, the median age at presentation was 53 years, and 71% were Caucasian. Chronic uveitis was the main clinical presentation (75%), mostly panuveitis (48%) with bilateral involvement (82%). After a median follow-up of 83.5 months, recovery was reported in 26% of patients. In multivariable analysis, Caucasian ethnicity (p = 0.007) and anterior uveitis (p = 0.008) were significantly associated with recovery, while increased intraocular pressure was negatively associated (p = 0.039). Conclusion: In this large European cohort, one quarter of patients recovered. Caucasian ethnicity and anterior uveitis are associated with ocular and extraocular recovery.

Resumen
This article explores the critical role of emotions and bodies in the individual dynamics of engagement as well as the construction of collective identities and action in women’s groups in the 1970s in France. Much literature on emotion work in feminist organizations has tended to discuss emotions stemming from women’s dominant socialization processes as, above all, alienating, thereby as barriers to their activism. The Movement for the liberty of abortion and birth control offers essential insights into how gendered dispositions can be primary determinants of feminist collective identity formation, and even spur innovative protest practices. With their specific organizational settings and action, some ‘dissident MLACs’ in Aix-en-Provence, Lille, Lyon and Paris – those which continued to practice abortion despite its legalization and in defiance of the 1975 law which forbade them to do so – mobilized reciprocal emotions and bodily experiences to sustain engagement and serve a political project. Drawing on a wide array of biographical interviews and archival sources centred on abortion practices, the article examines the distinctive emotion culture these groups constructed. Its anchoring in bodies, commitment to emotions like tenderness and compassion, but also domestic and relational skills consecrated a gendered repertoire of action which therefore notably appealed to women whose social properties did not predispose them to collective action.
