Resumen
This thesis is focusing on how global and local search engines retrieve information from the local domain. The three search engines tested are the global search engines Yahoo, Ask.com and the local search engine Web Wombat. The questions we examined were: which search engine has the best retrieval effectiveness? Could there be other reasons than retrieval effectiveness, to choosing a local search engine? For our test we constructed 20 questions related to Australia. We chose to divide the questions into topics like nature, sports and culture. For all questions we evaluated the relevance of the first 20 hits. We used the following measures in our test: Jaccard´s index, precision and average precision. We also looked at factors such as duplicates and error pages, because we consider this to be an important aspect to consider, when looking at the relevance of the first 20 hits. The results of our study showed that Yahoo had the best performance for precision. Web Wombat had faulty precision but results from Jaccard´s index revealed that Web Wombat had many unique documents. Web Wombat had the best average precision on one of our questions. In spite of Web Wombats faulty precision, we think that Web Wombat serve a purpose as an alternative to global search engines.

Resumen
There is growing global concern over the influence of road development on the conservation of biodiversity and on the functioning of ecosystems. Published reviews in the field of road ecology have identified that most research has examined the effects of roads linearly and have advocated for research at landscape scales. Among the many effects roads have, one of the most significant is the loss of animal life resulting from collisions with vehicles. Despite this, little is known of what toll this has on animal populations and how these impacts vary with scale. This stems from the perception that impacts are localised and that animals killed are typically considered common, and therefore not of great conservation concern. This thesis challenges this notion by showing that the impacts of fatalities can affect populations at landscape extents and that commonness is not a barrier to localised extinction risk. To achieve this I focus on the common wombat; an example of a common species for which road impacts have never been previously examined. Chapter 1 provides an overview of the importance of scale in quantifying road impacts and the debate surrounding common species persistence in road environments. Chapter 2 assesses habitat use of wombats in a road environment at a local scale. Results suggest that wombats select for roadside habitat and as a result populations could be under threat. Chapter 3 is a predictive model of wombat road fatalities which demonstrates the importance of incorporating habitat use in predictive fatality modelling. Through use of a spatially explicit population viability analysis, Chapter 4 demonstrates that roads, in conjunction with other threats can affect the persistence of a common species at a local scale. Chapter 5 is a landscape extent assessment of wombat habitat use, finding that increased effort should be employed in evaluating how reserves confer resilience to species from the impacts of roads and that habitat quality can dictate road-based fatality rates. Chapter 6 summarises the research presented in the thesis and suggests direction for future work, particularly the importance of evaluating the interplay between susceptibility and abundance on species vulnerability in road environments.

Resumen
Wombats (Vombatidae, Marsupialia) are fossorial marsupials that are most closely related to koalas amongst living marsupials. The cheek teeth of wombats are unique amongst Australian marsupials in being hypselodont (the condition where the teeth continue to grow throughout life and the formation of roots is suppressed). Hypselodonty is an adaptation to high degrees of tooth wear. The fossil record of vombatids is largely restricted to Pliocene to recent deposits and is largely represented by isolated teeth. Six genera are currently recognised from these deposits, all of which have hypselodont teeth. To date, a single isolated vombatid tooth has been described from pre-Pliocene deposits of South Australia and is the only example of a vombatid cheek tooth that possesses roots. Seventy specimens, representing five species of vombatid, have been recovered from Oligo-Miocene deposits in the Riversleigh World Heritage Site in northwestern Queensland and are described here. Among these are four new species and one new genus. A new species of Warendja from Riversleigh is described. It represents the oldest known hypselodont vombatid. This species is compared with additional specimens of the Pleistocene species of Warendja (W wakefieldi). Three species of Rhizophascolonus and a new monotypic genus are also described. Phylogenetic analysis of these taxa indicates that Rhizophascolonus may represent a sister taxon to the other vombatids. These specimens comprise almost all known examples of Oligo-Miocene vombatids. Most of the specimens are isolated teeth and are highly variable in size and morphology. Cusp detail is clearly preserved on many, allowing for omparison with the cusp morphology on juvenile cheek teeth of the common wombat (Vombatus ursinus). All of the taxa found in the deposits at Riversleigh share a number of characters such as marked differences in enamel thickness and height around the cheek teeth. It is argued here that these shared characters are indicative of high amounts of tooth wear and/or occlusal stresses acting on the trailing edge enamel. Combined with evidence of scratch-digging adaptations of the forelimbs it is suggestive of a rhizophagous niche for at least some of these early vombatids.

Based on the Grounded Theory Method of Situational Analysis, this dissertation examines woman-to-woman sexual assault as experienced by survivors, and as negotiated in theory, discourse, and service provision. It illuminates dynamics of recognition and denial that influence the lives of woman-to-woman sexual assault survivors. It begins in Chapters One and Two by looking at ways woman-perpetrated sexual violence is obscured by theories dating from the 1970s to present. Drawing on Butler, I advance a theoretical perspective which accommodates the coexistence of gender norms and their transgressions in thinking about sexual assault. I suggest that gendered norms for sexual violence influence acts on the one hand, and recognition on the other. In Chapter Three, survivor narratives are framed by phenomenological theory as I focus on how space and emotion are co-implicated in participant experiences of sexual assault. I present a common trajectory in which survivor participants describe going from feeling trapped to finding some degree of freedom in healing spaces. The fourth chapter deploys a “social worlds” analysis, in the tradition of Becker, to provide an institutional context for woman-to-woman sexual assault. I describe the ways practices and discourses in sexual assault and related contexts of service provision are moving from a rigidly gendered paradigm toward a de-gendered one. I conceptualize providers and survivors who recognize woman-to-woman sexual assault as members of the “Anti-Violence Project Subworld.” Those who understand sexual assault as a fundamentally man-on-woman form of violence are conceptualized as members of the “Violence Against Women Subworld.” Finally, in Chapter Five, this dissertation identifies four discursive approaches to woman-to-woman sexual assault. They are referred to as “Gendered Silencing, ” “Gendered Contextualizing, ” “Degendered Agentification, ” and “Degendered Agentified Contextualization.”

Resumen
Partner abuse m women's same-sex intimate relationships IS characterised by invisibility and often misconceptions and disbelief. A dominant focus upon men's violence towards women - necessary as that has been and continues to be - has made little space for woman-to-woman partner abuse to be addressed and understood. This is particularly the case in the UK, where same-sex domestic violence has been slow to appear on the public domestic violence agenda. This thesis is one of the first contributions to a British body of literature about woman-towoman partner abuse. By sharing data from qualitative interviews with 40 women who self-define as having been abused by female partners, I demonstrate the severity ofthe types, dynamics and impacts ofthe abuse reported. This thesis addresses three key issues, all of which engage with the complexities of woman-to-woman partner abuse and the challenges which woman-to-woman partner abuse poses to dominant constructions of gender, domestic violence and woman-to-woman relationships. Firstly, in demonstrating the striking similarities between participants' accounts and knowledge about women's experiences of heterosexual partner abuse, I identify some of the limitations of gendered constructions of violence and abuse which predominantly posit men as perpetrators and women as victims. Secondly, I examine the implications of the social contexts of women's minority sexual identities for the accessibility of support, and the constraints posed by stigma, 'the closet', homophobia and heteronormativity. I fuse this analysis together with women's reports of barriers to seeking support which share parallels with knowledge about heterosexual women's help-seeking, and I thus draw attention to the double jeopardy which women in abusive same-sex relationships often face. Thirdly, I examine the negative connotations which women associated with 'abused women', and how women subsequently projected self-presentations which helped them to manage and make sense ofan experience which potentially threatens their identities.

The aim of this paper is to illuminate the ways in which working class women are invisible within the feminist and ecofeminist movements. Using the faces and forces of oppression as presented by Iris Marion Young and Hilde Lindemann, I show how the working class experiences oppression. I also show how oppression based on class differs from that based on gender and how these differences contribute to the invisibility of working class women within feminism. In the second section, I use Val Plumwood and Karen J. Warrens versions of ecofeminist philosophy to show how working class women are again absent. Were ecofeminists to include working class women, specifically rural folks and farmers, the idea of attunedness to the land could be both better understood and incorporated within the environmental movement at large.

Resumen

The CSULB College of the Arts and Department of Dance presented “Beyond the Pale”, a concert of MFA graduate thesis choreography by Nate Hodges, Francesca Jandasek, and Courtney Ozovek, on March 15 - 17, 2018 at the Martha B. Knoebel Dance Theater at California State University, Long Beach. The Immured Woman, a 40-minute long episodic interdisciplinary performance work for 10 dancers, was presented first in the program.

Inspired by the Romanian legend of the Arge? Monastery in which a pregnant woman is immured to make the walls of the monastery stand, The Immured Woman investigated the themes of woman, immortality, creation, and procreation through merging dance, physical theater, visual art, film, text, and sound. The final product included live dance performance, original text and music, an architectural set, film projections of sexualized fruit, and a time-stop animation of an original illuminated musical manuscript to unveil art creation as a metaphor for procreation and procreation as a metaphor for art creation.

Resumen
Ambitious Young Woman is an hour-long dramedy layered with warmth, gravitas, and humor. With dialogue that flies by at the speed of light and a protagonist we would walk into battle with, heart and goodwill lie at the center of the series. While the premise centers around politics on a university campus, the ramifications of the students’ actions will ripple across the entire nation. Staunch liberals of Gen Z are our heroes and they give no mercy when pursuing their progressive ideals. However, it is their evolution from young men and women into adulthood that we’re returning week-to-week for. Even as they bring down the conservative bastions of ‘The Baby Boomers’, it is the characters interpersonal lives that bring about the greatest intrigue.

The aim of this work is to look at some of the woman´s portrayals in magazine`s advertisement - more specifically on ads of cosmetics and perfumes - and to examine, from the discourse of young college students (female), some links between the representation of woman on mass media and its social meaning. The ads under scrutiny show the image of woman mixed with flowers, water, stones and crystals, dominating wild animals or even appearing in very seductive scenes (as femmes fatales). Considering such sort of portrayals, this study tries to interpret some of the meanings that make up the universe of representations of women in advertising as well as in the contemporary culture. The ideas of sexual seduction, power and consumption appear over the interviewees´ speeches as important issues concerning woman`s representation on media and gender roles.

Kareithi, Monicah Wanjiru. "A historical-legal analysis of woman-to-woman marriage in Kenya". Thesis, University of Pretoria, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/65665.

Texto completo
Resumen
This thesis sets out, against a historical background, to establish the legal status of woman-towoman marriages in contemporary Kenya. The phenomenon of woman-to-woman marriage is a form of African customary marriage between two women. Woman-to-woman marriages are distinctly African and clearly distinguishable from the modern-day phenomenon of same-sex marriages, as understood and practiced especially in the global West. They are customary marriages that are conducted by Kenyan communities, such as the Kamba, Kisii, Nandi, Kikuyu and Kuria, for a variety of reasons. The thesis sets out the rationales for woman-towoman marriage and expounds on the nature of the African family and marriage customs in pre-colonial Kenya. Due to the erroneous conflation of the phenomenon of African woman-towoman marriages and same-sex marriages of the West, the provisions in the Constitution of Kenya 2010 and the Marriage Act of 2014 stipulated that adults have the right to marry only persons of the opposite sex. This led to uncertainty about the legal status of woman-to-woman marriage under Kenyan law. This thesis argues that a purposive reading of the Constitution, taking into consideration the Constitution’s recognition of culture as an important value of the Kenyan society and the historical context within which the provisions proscribing same-sex marriages were included in the Constitution and the Marriage Act, leads to the conclusion that these provisions were not intended to proscribe the cultural practice of woman-to-woman marriage in Kenya.

Resumen
The older woman's body is an example of the discontinuous nature of those beings who come under the rubric of woman and, as such, demontrates the impossibility of a unitary representation of woman. This thesis explores the social construction of the older woman's body both as abject and as 'docile/useful' and proposes how this abjectification can be re-inscribed as transgressive through a de-territorialization of the older woman's body. This thesis positions the older woman's body as (un)becoming because it lacks cultural intelligibility as representative of the feminine on the one hand and, on the other, because it disrupts normative ideals of femininity and eludes disciplinary practices. Sexuality is used as a resource to conjure, construct, reinforce and validate the 'ideal' woman, a model against which the older woman is redefined as asexual. I argue that the particular technologies employed in the production of the older woman's 'docile/useful' body are those of the health sciences. A 'docile/useful' body transforms the older woman into a knowable, treatable and profitable body through discourses of health. Mass mammographic screening is analysed in order to illustrate how the biomedical sciences are employed in the regulation of the older woman's body through the co-option of health promotion strategy as a disciplinary practice.

"Sweet Black Pussy for Sale" sets the stage for this very feminine and colloquial laced collection of verse. Both figuratively and literally, the voices of a seldom-traveled African-American culture are depicted through these songs. In this thesis, I consider myself a GRIOT, sworn to tell nothing but the truth. These poems speak from places some might consider sacred and others quite sinful. These poems moan out the anthems of those unsung heroes and heroines from my family lineage. The voices of my long dead grandfather, grandmother, aunts and great uncle haunt poems such as "Blues," "Salvation," "A Memorial for Lawrence," and "Apartment 12 B Dwight D. Eisenhower Street." These poems say, "Even when it's sunny on the other side of town somebody could be wearing a frown. It's because the blues don't mess with folks who ain't got anything to lose.â"

Resumen
Includes bibliography.
This study is a contribution to the New Testament hermeneutics. It is a reinterpretation of the Parable of the "Ten Maidens" from an African Womanist Perspective consonant with an Epideictic Rhetoric approach. Through this perspective the social position of women in parables based on an androcentric world is explored. However, this position is challenged by a womanist perspective. Because it is challenged, the process of conscientization has begun and the struggle for the lack of self-worth follows. With African womanist epideictic perspective the intended effect is to respond to the needs of particular individuals or communities, and to persuade the readers to bring about a change of attitude and behaviour in their situation. This thesis opens with an exploration of the socio-historical experience of women revealed in literature of the first century Greco-Roman world; the Jewish world as well as ancient African world. A search in the literature betrays that women's experiences from different societies are generally based on a patriarchal ideology - that of women's supposed position in society. Women's view of the world was therefore along these patriarchal standards. An African womanist epideictic approach, therefore is employed as a liberative tool in dealing with this problem. The second chapter presents women's portrayal in parables, especially those found in African literature and in the synoptic gospels. Luke, in particular, deals with women in parables very positively bringing up the whole question of relationality, that is, practising good relations with one another. This is explored further in the concluding section. In African parables there are two sets of women behaviour. Firstly, there are those who are very much inclined with the socialization of the obedience and loyalty to males in an African cultural tradition. Secondly, there are also those who try to pull out of the patriarchal normative instructions. The behaviour of these two sets is similar to the behaviour of women found in Matthean parables. These behavioural tendencies become so significant for an African womanist that the "Parable of the Ten Maidens" in Matthew is further explored in chapter three. The concluding chapter includes an overview of the thesis and a discussion of the ethical considerations raised when one reads the parables, especially of the "Ten Maidens" from an African womanist epideictic perspective.

Mansfield, Katherine. "Sensationalising the New Woman : crossing the boundaries between sensation and New Woman literature". Thesis, Cardiff University, 2018. http://orca.cf.ac.uk/120186/.

Resumen
My thesis seeks to conceptualise and explore the relationship between Sensation and New Woman fiction, two popular genres of the mid- to late-Victorian era, to investigate the extent to which Sensation literature is a forerunner to the early development of the New Woman novel; and consequently how the two genres blur, or cross, temporal and conceptual boundaries. Both genres challenged prevailing attitudes to gender, sexuality, morality and domesticity: Sensation fiction more implicitly by making the erstwhile Angel of the House the agent of domestic and marital upheaval and even crime, New Woman fiction explicitly by making the rebel of the house the rebel in society; here, she was more often positioned within the larger socio-economic setting for which her rebellion could have dramatic consequences. While previous comparisons of the two genres (although they are limited in number) have focused solely on the crossovers between the female protagonists, I seek to extend existing scholarship by investigating the relationship between Sensation and New Woman fiction through the two genres' response to contemporary legal and social debates, the characters, both female and male, Gothic literature, a mode both genres revisited, and their subversive endings. I argue that it is in challenging Victorian ideologies that Sensation and New Woman literature obscure and, to a certain extent, redefine genre paradigms.

Oed, Anja. "Antelope (woman) and buffalo (woman) : contemporary literary transformations of a topos in Yoruba culture". Thesis, SOAS, University of London, 2002. http://eprints.soas.ac.uk/28788/.

Texto completo
Resumen
This thesis explores four contemporary literary transformations of the topos of agbonrin and efon, antelope (woman) and buffalo (woman) respectively, in D.O. Fagunwa's Ogboju Ode Ninu Igbo Irunmale and Igbo Olodumare, Amos Tutuola's My Life in the Bush of Ghosts, Mobolaji Adenubi's "The Importance of Being Prudent", and Ben Okri's three abiku narratives. The Famished Road, Songs of Enchantment, and Infinite Riches. The introductory chapter raises theoretical issues regarding the notion of a topos itself and examines how these resonate with central Yoruba concepts. Furthermore, it provides an overview of Yoruba cultural beliefs associated with the figures of antelope (woman) and buffalo (woman) and comments on contemporary literary transformations of this topos in general. Each of the consecutive chapters represents an in-depth analysis and interpretation of one contemporary author's literary transformation of the topos of antelope (woman) and/or buffalo (woman). By putting each writer's deployment of the motif of agbonrin and efon in a biographical, historical and socio-cultural perspective, I explore how he or she - more or less consciously - invests it with new meanings and, in the process, transforms it, and how the topos of antelope (woman) and buffalo (woman) thus comes to serve manifold symbolic or metaphoric purposes, reflecting on and expressing a whole range of issues. Not only is the topos as such continuous beyond the precolonial period but it also assumes a new relevance with respect to the socio-cultural and political anxieties generated in the colonial and post-colonial climates. The contemporary literary transformations explored in this thesis all mediate and negotiate personal, socio-cultural and political anxieties in the wake of sustained contact with the West, especially through Christian missionary activity and colonialism. The thematisation of gender relations plays an important symbolic, metaphoric and metonymic role in this respect, since the way in which each writer's literary transformation of the motif of agbonrin and efon relates to the issue of women and female agency in Yoruba culture, or, more generally, in Nigerian culture, is an important means of communicating and conceptualising change.

Resumen
This thesis engages with the feminist argument that women need to create a culture of the female and rediscover female genealogy. The misogynistic, theological and philosophical narratives on Woman are deconstructed. Using the metaphor of divining as a tool for searching for a source the author seeks to discover the source of Woman, one not bound by male definition and control. In removing the stigma of Woman as 'misbegotten male' and cause of 'original sin' Woman's sexuality and spirituality are recognised. Female sex is acknowledged and the difference reframed so that male sex no longer holds the dominant position. Woman becomes Divine, and it is a divinity that signifies her earthly interactions in her spiritual, social and personal life. After the divining a female genealogy is created and the divine is drawn out in woman. The writing and analyses of Virginia Woolf and Luce Irigaray are drawn on to establish the basis of the research methodology. Creativity, myths, story, poetry, fiction and feminist analysis are used to find the woman hidden in traditional patriarchal rendering of history. This thesis is both a historical and autobiographical research taken within the context of the author's cultural influences. It is a transdisciplinary research within a set framework, concentrating on women's sexual and spiritual specificity. Greek and Celtic history, Wicca, Christianity and Buddhism are included, with an inclusive but not in-depth analysis of these traditions. The underlying theme of this thesis is women's disconnection from each other. In the author's personal story it concerns her mother, sister and herself. In the collective story it is about women's loss of their female genealogy and connection to their women's history.

Resumen

The male Athenian aristocracy erected an exemplary polis. The city-state reflected aesthetic perfection, civility, grace, and philosophical clarity of mind. As the “school of Hellas,” in the words of Thucydides, Athens has proved to be fundamental for all Western cultures. It was also an originator of “civilized dominance,” which meant sequestering, and it was suppressing its “non-phallic” population. This study explores the institutionalized subordinating of women, the muting of their ability to be heard, in an attempt to unearth the deeply entrenched precedents of abuse from phallic dominance within society.

Resumen
In this study, I examine how terrorism is produced and consumed in communication. Using discourse analysis, I investigate how terrorism is constituted in the accounts of four women described in online news reports as having joined, or almost joined the so-called Islamic State (IS): “Alex,” constructed as having been lonely and flirted with IS; “Khadija,” presented as a schoolteacher turned member of IS’s all-women’s brigade; Laura, described as a woman whose partner abandoned her, who met a man online, and who brought her son with her to join IS; and Tareena, referred to as a health worker who brought her child with her to join IS. My analyses address how each interview can add to our insights about becoming a woman of IS. I make four arguments. First, terrorism is mobilized through interaction. Second, the double bind is a dynamic uniquely applicable to women because becoming a member of IS can be examined as an act of gender resistance. Third, accounts of becoming a woman of IS work as rhetoric designed to prevent other vulnerable people from being recruited. Fourth, terrorism is mobilized through narrative storytelling, especially through the use of paralinguistic features in the building of accounts. By researching terrorism as communication, and focusing in particular on four women’s interviews of their recruitment experiences, this dissertation contributes to new, applicable, and actionable interventions designed to counter and prevent the violence of terrorism, as well as to research about women, terrorism, and communication.

Resumen
We have gathered the following pages to archive our time here in Richmond, Virginia. We have been here for two years, growing slowly, moving when needed to new anchorholds to avoid detection or arrest. We scrutinize the urban environment like modern archeologists. We collect stories and speculate about new uses of old things. It is imperative to be resourceful here, and we do so out of necessity but also in the spirit of practice. These pages were made en route, each an exploration of the tools at hand when on the move. The method of creation is just as important as the creation as the story itself. The ancients invented stories about the constellations in order to track their routes across the earth. A cluster of stars exists called the seven sisters. Only six are visible. According to myth, the sisters leave to look for the seventh sister and disappear below the horizon for a month. Their return to the sky signals the end of the planting season. The story becomes allegory, told to educate stargazers about the growing cycle. Like those sisters, we come and go. We tell stories to teach. We tell stories survive.

Resumen
The purpose of this thesis is to review the positions of women in Islam in light of the primary sources of faith, The Quran and Prophet Muhammads Sunnah, and hence, contributes to a better understanding of the highly stereotyped and Westernized image of Muslim woman as exemplified in the literary work of the Egyptian writer, Nawal Al Saadawi. The thesis focuses on how Nawal Al Saadawi, through her novel Woman at Point Zero, believes, as the Western world, feminists and readers do, that Islam has degraded the social status of women. She enforces the image of Muslim women as an oppressed, silent, victim of her religion. In doing so, she collaborates with the West and its image of the inferior status of Muslim/Arab women and the violence of patriarchal Muslim societies, strengthens the colonial, orientalist discourse and thus ends up being perceived in the Muslim and Arab societies as an agent of Westernization.
