Texto completoThis thesis describes the social phenomenon of volunteering in the public library as a social institution, focused on the situation in the United States of America. The paper is based on a literature review and on findings of a qualitative study. After discussing the history of volunteering, philanthropy, the American public library, and Andrew Carnegie’s role, there will be a review on research on volunteerism. Thereby, the focus is laid upon aspects of volunteer motivation as well as volunteer management in the US in general and particular in libraries. Furthermore, a compilation and interpretation of library volunteer coordinators’ materials, manuals, and reports will be presented. The results of the qualitative study which is based on a combination of field research and problem-centered interviews – held in 31 public libraries in eleven US states – will be discussed in detail. Among others, the results lead to the conclusion that – especially concerning several motivational and management aspects – public library volunteering is quite specific in comparison to volunteer work in other facilities and institutions.

Texto completoVolunteering has emerged as part of many corporations’ fundamental activities and is no longer considered only an altruistic action but also important for business. The kind of volunteering that is most important is skill-based volunteering, which involves that the volunteers use their skills to help less competent organizations. This study aims at discovering if national culture affects the view of employee volunteering. In order to perform this study, the large and globally integrated company IBM has been chosen, and employee volunteering activity has been compared between the American parent organization and the Swedish subsidiary. Employees at IBM records their volunteering hours in an online resource called On Demand Community. Numbers from these records have been compared to find differences in quantity of volunteering between Sweden and the USA. The major finding is that employee volunteering is a much bigger phenomenon in the USA than it is in Sweden. Volunteering is on average 260 percent more common at IBM in the USA than it is in Sweden. Interviews with corporate managers in each location also confirm this relationship. The USA has a stronger tradition of volunteering than Sweden has. Possible explanations are that the governmental incorporation of voluntary organizations is bigger in Sweden, while volunteering culture to a greater extent is imposed by tradition and religion in the USA. The findings of this study indicate that culture plays a big part in the view of volunteering and that the effort to implement volunteering therefore must vary between countries. According to other research, employee volunteering is good for business and this implies that Sweden should use the USA as a model for volunteering management.

The motivation to volunteer and the satisfaction associated with volunteering were investigated through the responses of volunteer youth coaches (n = 100). Two surveys and follow-up interview questions were created and adapted from previous research in the area of volunteerism to determine reasons why adults volunteer to coach and to explore the factors that contribute to the satisfaction levels of youth coaches. Statistical analyses of variance were conducted to determine the relationship between each of the motivation and satisfaction variables with the gender of the volunteer coaches, the gender of the team coached (male, female, or both), and the completion of a coaching education program. The highest ranked motives for volunteering according to the sample included: to give back to the community, enjoyment associating with youth, and to teach and lead others. Overall the respondents were highly satisfied with their role as a youth coach, the organization of games and practices, and the recognition received for volunteering. Through the interview process (n = 20) various themes emerged from the responses of the volunteer coaches. The reasons for volunteering, according to the interviewed coaches, were that most people volunteer because their child is involved in the program, no other adult would coach, to contribute to society, and their lack of trust in other coaches.
