This chapter considers the rise to prominence by enslaved and freed persons in the major urban centers of the first Abbasid period (c. 750–900 CE). It uses the example of elite female performers at the Abbasid court, and, as evidence, a set of passages concerning three of the women, all of which occur in the 10th-century Kitab al-Aghani (Book of Songs) by Abu al-Faraj al-Isbahani (d.c. 972). The passages voice the same complaint: that the singer in question was wrongly enslaved. These texts are then weighed in light of the question of upward social mobility. The singers, despite the odds, achieved and, in certain cases, sustained preeminence. The phenomenon is familiar to historians, as a number of Abbasid–era notables emerged from slavery to achieve elite standing, whether as members of political, commercial, and military circles or at the highest levels of culture and scholarship.

Early schooled in writing by a pedagogy rooted in dialogic exchange, Vernon Lee (1856–1935) made the interactive relationship between writer and reader central to her critical prose. Her early essays showcase her already distinctive prose voice—markedly different from a professional academic masculine voice. Quick to establish a rapport, Lee is a sympathetic guide, skilfully steering her readers through arguments and expositions, but also stimulating and involving them through impressionistic description, association, and intricate dynamic passages full of open-ended verb forms. Published in the 1890s and early 1900s, many of the essays in her innovative book The Handling of Words and Other Studies in Literary Psychology (1923) show her fascination with the idea of style as a form of contact and transaction between writer and reader, with style creating the perceptual patterns that persuade readers to think and imagine in ways not naturally their own.

Voice of the Buddha is a study of the intellectual practices and theories of scripture developed by the fifth-century thinker Buddhaghosa, the principal commentator, editor, and translator of the Theravada Buddhist intellectual tradition. Buddhaghosa considered the Buddha to be omniscient and his words “oceanic”: every word, passage, book, and the corpus as a whole are taken to be “endless and immeasurable.” Commentarial practice then requires disciplined methods of expansion, drawing out the endless possibilities for meaning and application. This book considers Buddhaghosa’s explicit theories of texts, and follows his practices of exegesis to discover how he explored scripture’s infinity. Reading with Buddhaghosa yields fresh insight into all three collections of the early Pali texts—Vinaya, the Suttas, and the Abhidhamma. By exploring the philosophical and hermeneutic significance of the immeasurability of scripture as a general principle and in commentarial practice, this book offers new tools to understand the huge scriptural and commentarial literature of the Pali tradition. And by taking seriously a traditional commentator’s theory of texts, it beckons us to learn from commentaries themselves how we might read and interpret them and the texts on which they comment.

This chapter examines the structural tension between voice and image in Absalom, Absalom!, relating the novel’s formal resolutions to developments in photography, the printing press, and talking pictures. Considering the cognate set of mid-1930s relationships between word and image in the “photographic essay,” newspapers, and film, the chapter situates Faulkner’s artistic achievements in the context of larger cultural concerns about the storytelling capacity of visual images, the limits of textuality as an indexical medium, and the media’s commercial imperatives. The chapter directly relates these concerns to the tension in Faulkner’s aesthetic ideology between modernistic imperatives and antiquated romantic tendencies, since here the passage between text and image implies the “inheritance” and transmission of a romance gene from one media ecology to another by way of a hypnotizing tall tale. The chapter also looks closely at Pylon, examining a cultural mode of production and its relationship to capitalism more generally.

In this second volume, von Wahlde provides a detailed commentary on the Gospel of John. He includes his own translation from the Greek (with material from each edition of the Gospel indicated by typeface) along with detailed notes on individual verses. Abstract The Dark Bible explores early modern England’s interactions with difficult aspects of the Bible. For the early modern reader, although the Bible was understood to be perfect, sufficient, and transcendent (indeed, the Protestant Reformation required it), it was not always experienced as such. While traditional interpretive precepts, such as the claim that all dark passages could be read in the light of clear ones, were frequently recited by early modern commentators, their actual encounters with the darkness of the Bible suggest that writers, commentators, and translators were often deeply uncomfortable with the disjunction between how (as they thought) the Bible should be, and how it was. The Dark Bible investigates writers’ and translators’ attempts to explain, accommodate, circumvent, and repair problematic texts across a range of genres and contexts. In doing so, it charts English use of biblical scholarship in vernacular culture and investigates how vernacular writing in various genres could give voice to questioning and confused biblical interactions. This book demonstrates that early modern writers and critics engaged extensively with the Bible’s difficulties, attempting to work around and rectify problematic texts, and otherwise reconcile the darkness of the Bible with theories of the Bible’s perfection and clarity.

This chapter discusses how Americans debated regarding women's right to vote, even before the passage of the Nineteenth Amendment in 1920. By the presidential election of 1936, most agreed that women had failed to organize in numbers large enough to provide them with an effective voice in the political system. However, World War II would create opportunities for women's political activism. As men joined the service, women replaced them not only in the industrial workplace but also in political organizing. Americans concerned with dramatic shifts in gender roles then engaged in a concerted effort to remasculinize U.S. culture after the war. In need of strategies to lessen their apparent threat to American masculinity, Progressive women, led by Women for Wallace chair Elinor Gimbel, introduced various tactics to calm fears about the supposed dangers of leftist women.

The African colonization movement plays a peculiar role in the study of racial equality in the United States. For white colonizationists, the movement was positioned as a compromise between slavery and abolition. For free blacks, colonization offered the hope of freedom, but not within America’s borders. Bjørn F. Stillion Southard shows how politics and identity were negotiated in middle of the public discourse on race, slavery, and freedom in America. Operating from a position of relative power, white advocates argued that colonization was worthy of support from the federal government. Stillion Southard analyzes the speeches of Henry Clay, Elias B. Caldwell, and Abraham Lincoln as efforts to engage with colonization at the level of deliberation. Between Clay and Caldwell’s speeches at the founding of the American Colonization Society in 1816 and Lincoln’s final public effort to encourage colonization in 1862, Stillion Southard explores the speeches and writings of free blacks who grappled with colonization’s conditional promises of freedom. The book examines an array of discourses to explore the complex issues of identity facing free blacks who attempted to meaningfully engage in colonization efforts. From a peculiarly voiced Counter Memorial against the ACS, to the letters of wealthy black merchant Louis Sheridan negotiating for his passage to Liberia, to the civically-minded orations of Hilary Teage in Liberia, Peculiar Rhetoric brings into light the intricacies of blacks who attempted to meaningfully engage in colonization.
