The Aboriginal Story of Burke and Wills is the first major study of Aboriginal associations with the Burke and Wills expedition of 1860–61. A main theme of the book is the contrast between the skills, perceptions and knowledge of the Indigenous people and those of the new arrivals, and the extent to which this affected the outcome of the expedition. The book offers a reinterpretation of the literature surrounding Burke and Wills, using official correspondence, expedition journals and diaries, visual art, and archaeological and linguistic research – and then complements this with references to Aboriginal oral histories and social memory. It highlights the interaction of expedition members with Aboriginal people and their subsequent contribution to Aboriginal studies. The book also considers contemporary and multi-disciplinary critiques that the expedition members were, on the whole, deficient in bush craft, especially in light of the expedition’s failure to use Aboriginal guides in any systematic way. Generously illustrated with historical photographs and line drawings, The Aboriginal Story of Burke and Wills is an important resource for Indigenous people, Burke and Wills history enthusiasts and the wider community. This book is the outcome of an Australian Research Council project.

In this book, Hertha D. Sweet Wong examines the intersection of writing and visual art in the autobiographical work of twentieth- and twenty-first-century American writers and artists who employ a mix of written and visual forms of self-narration. Combining approaches from autobiography studies and visual studies, Wong argues that, in grappling with the breakdown of stable definitions of identity and unmediated representation, these writers-artists experiment with hybrid autobiography in image and text to break free of inherited visual-verbal regimes and revise painful histories. These works provide an interart focus for examining the possibilities of self-representation and self-narration, the boundaries of life writing, and the relationship between image and text. Wong considers eight writers-artists, including comic-book author Art Spiegelman; Faith Ringgold, known for her story quilts; and celebrated Indigenous writer Leslie Marmon Silko. Wong shows how her subjects formulate webs of intersubjectivity shaped by historical trauma, geography, race, and gender as they envision new possibilities of selfhood and fresh modes of self-narration in word and image.

This book considers the history of British literary scholar, author and Christian apologist C. S. Lewis’s fame from the 1940s through the present and compares his contrasting patterns of reception in Britain and America. Lewis was both an esteemed literary figure and a divisive personality among his colleagues at Oxford and Cambridge Universities, who recognized his penchant for projecting a persona. It took the outbreak of the Second World War and invitations from Christian leaders to draw Lewis into crafting popular Christian apologetics. Yet Lewis’s reasons for writing books that were accessible to a broad audience, including his children’s books, were rooted in a literary theory informed by his early reading life in Edwardian Belfast and his objections to literary modernism. The reception of Lewis’s popular works in America was shaped by the fact that American readers did not appreciate Lewis’s literary and cultural context. His posthumous fame, furthermore, should be accredited in part to factors independent of the qualities of his work: e.g. the publishing history of his books, the rise of visual media, the history of evangelicalism, and the manipulation of his legacy by the C. S. Lewis Estate. The evolution of rival portraits of Lewis as a Christian apologist and a children’s author is equally part of this story. Lewis’s platform as a contrarian Christian resisting modernity and his reactions to the intellectual, social, and religious changes of his day made the critical difference to his disparate transatlantic receptions.

This chapter examines a type of viewer response to visual narratives about child labor produced by Lewis Hine and others: Thomas Robinson Dawley Jr.'s 1912 book The Child That Toileth Not: The Story of a Government Investigation. Dawley's 490-page polemic, which contains more than 100 photographs, was based on field investigations of child labor that he conducted in Southern cotton mills while working for the U.S. Bureau of Labor. Dawley combines text and image to build a detailed refutation of Albert Beveridge and his ilk. In The Child That Toileth Not Dawley avoids picturing children actually working. Instead, he deploys vivid description to tell a story of the laboring child citizen's good fortune. In addition, Dawley finds in child labor photography, especially in the work of Hine, resources for strategic appropriation. By appropriating the structure, style, and strategies of a decade-old, multimodal anti-child labor narrative, Dawley repositions the working child as the apotheosis of the values of citizenship rather than their denigration.

Aimed at newcomers to the subject, this book is a guide for the analysis of Shakespeare on film. Starting with an introduction to the main challenge faced by any director — the early-modern language of the plays — there follows exemplars for examining how that challenge is met using as case studies twelve Shakespeare films, including Romeo and Juliet, Macbeth, and The Tempest. The reader is invited to explore different critical approaches such as how a director can tell the story of the play in a setting that embraces the expectations of realism in cinema, but still pays homage to the theatrical origins of the work. There is a discussion of those films in which the setting provides a visual analogy with the preoccupations of the story, but not at the expense of Shakespeare's language which is extended to show how some films use recent history as a setting, adding a further layer of meaning to the story from the cultural resonances associated with that historical past. These films also rely on an assumption that Shakespeare is so well-known as to form a distinctive, easily recognized brand in the cinema marketplace. Thus, his work can be reimagined in completely different genres such as the teenpic. In considering the latter films the reader will be invited to reflect upon wider issues relevant to the study of Shakespeare on film, principally how, and if, these adaptations of the plays can be recognised as part of the extended canon of Shakespeare in performance.

A comparative study of three centuries of English literature and media in India, the book tells the story of English in India as a tale not of imperial coercion, but of a people's language in a postcolonial democracy. Focusing on experiences of hearing, touching, remembering, speaking, and seeing English, the book delves into a previously unexplored body of texts from English and Hindi literature, law, film, visual art, and public protests. It reveals little-known debates and practices that have shaped the meanings of English in India and the Anglophone world, including the overlooked history of the legislation of English in India. It also calls attention to how low castes and minority ethnic groups have routinely used this elite language to protest the Indian state. The rite of confession played a unique role in the legal, political, social, and cultural worlds of imperial Russia from the moment that Tsars as well as hierarchs realized that having their subjects go to confession could make them better citizens as well as better Christians. For three centuries, confession became a political tool, a devotional exercise, a means of education, and a literary genre. It defined who was Orthodox, and who was ‘other.’ From first encouraging Russian subjects to participate in confession to improve them and integrate them into a reforming Church and State, Church and state authorities working hand in hand turned to confession to integrate converts of other nationalities. But the sacrament was not only something that state and religious authorities sought to impose on an unwilling populace. Confession could provide an opportunity for carefully crafted complaint. What state and church authorities initially imagined as a way of controlling an unruly population could be used by the same population as a way of telling their own story, or simply getting time off to attend to their inner lives. This book brings Russia and Ukraine to the rich scholarly and popular literature on confession, penance, discipline, and gender in the modern world, and in doing so opens a key window onto church, state, and society. It brings together sources and discourses that are usually discussed separately. In the last two decades, media scholars have often suggested that television has become cinematic. Once considered “a mere instrument of transmission,” as Rudolf Arnheim put it, or derided as a vast wasteland, TV is now praised for its visual density and complexity. Serial dramas, in particular, are acclaimed for their imitations of cinema’s stylistically innovative and narratively challenging conventions. But what exactly does “cinematic TV” mean? Cinematic TV takes up this question comprehensively, arguing that TV dramas quote, copy, and appropriate (primarily) American cinema in multiple ways and toward multiple ends. Putting together an innovative framework by combining intertextuality and memory studies, Cinematic TV focuses on four modalities of intermedial borrowings: homage, evocation, genre, and parody. Through close readings of such exemplary shows as Stranger Things, Mad Men, Damages, and Dear White People, the book demonstrates how serial dramas reproduce and rework, undermine and idolize, and, in some cases, compete with and outdo cinema. Ultimately, Cinematic TV argues that serial dramas function archivally in relation to cinema, for cinematic moments, motifs, and contours hover around the televisual frame, constantly breaking through. How serial dramas handle such cinematic hauntings is the story that this book tells.

Starting off with the unique story of the Buddha and leisure park designed in rural Louisiana, the conclusion argues that despite many problems with large comparative projects Buddhist Studies, the amusement parks, memorials, museums, and gardens described in the book as a whole share many qualities. They generally lack formal, formidable, ritual, ecclesiastical, or sectarian boundaries. They make little sustained effort to be “authentic.” These sites emphasize display, performance, and juxtaposition and anachronistic mixing (not systematic reconstruction) of various Buddhist cultures, teachings, languages, objects, and symbols. This is important, because it provides us with a completely different image of contemporary Buddhism that emphasizes innovation and ecumenism instead of purity and authenticity. These sites present different Buddhist traditions, images, and aesthetic expressions as united but not uniform, collected but not concise—a gathering not a movement. By eschewing the local and authentic in favor of the timeless, ecumenical, and universal, they become difficult to categorize. They make visual statements for sure, even if they don’t attempt to create single messages or provide coherent teachings.

The story a film tells is usually filtered through a particular perspective, or point of view. This book argues that slasher films, and the Friday the 13th movies particularly, use all the stylistic tools at their disposal to create a complex and emotionally intense approach to perspective, which develops and shifts across the decades. Chapter one discusses the history of perspective in horror, and the different critical conversations around this. Chapter two looks at the use of camerawork, specifically point-of-view camerawork in the way these films visually communicate perspective. The fourth chapter talks about the way sound and editing work together to communicate perspective and experience in the death sequences these movies capitalize upon. The fourth chapter considers the perspective of viewers, and how each movie speaks to viewers who are either familiar or unfamiliar with the ongoing story in the series. The final chapter first explains how these trends look across a chronological timeline, and what this tells us about the historical development of perspective before looking at the influence these stylistic approaches have had on ‘serious’ film, particularly those recognized by the Hollywood critical establishment.

It is commonly assumed that serious philosophical reflection on animals goes back only a few hundred years, to the Utilitarians or to the rise of Darwinism. This volume shows that, to the contrary, animals have been a subject of controversy and reflection in all periods of the history of philosophy. We trace the story from Greek and Indian antiquity through the Islamic and Latin medieval traditions, to Renaissance and early modern thought, ending with contemporary ideas about animals. Two main questions that arise throughout the volume are: What capacities can be ascribed to animals, and How should we treat them? Notoriously ungenerous attitudes toward animals, for instance in Aristotle and Descartes, are shown to have been more nuanced than often supposed, while remarkable defenses of benevolence toward animals are unearthed in late antiquity, India, the Islamic world, and Kant. The book also includes philosophical exploration of such topics as cannibalism, animal instinct, and the scientific testing of animals. The Auditory Setting introduces and investigates how narrative and a sense of place are constructed in film and media arts through the reproduction and mediation of site-specific environmental sounds, or ‘ambience’. Although this sonic backdrop acts as the acoustically mediated space where a story or event can take place, there has been little academic study of sound’s undervalued role in cinematic setting and its production. The aim of this book is to question classical assumptions about sound in film and media arts (e.g., image-based relationships) and shift the focus towards the site and its sonic environment, whose presence is often carefully constructed in a film or media artwork’s diegetic world as a vital narrative strategy. The emphasis on site in the book enables an informed investigation of an essentially anthropogenic process of the sonic environment’s mediation and (re)production. Sonic environments are inhabited, experienced, exploited and transformed every day, their corporeality augmented by human agency in mediated forms. The human agency of sonic environments is crucial to unwrap in order to understand cultural expectations from the audiovisual media; greater awareness is required of narration, depiction, communication and artistic production approaches and affordances harnessed through media technologies. Drawing on theories of narrative, diegesis, mimesis and presence, and following a varied number of relevant audio-visual works, this book is a ground-breaking exploration of human agency in mediating environmental sounds and the nature of the sonic experience in the Anthropocene.

In 19th-century France, fashion was a powerful and lucrative regime that depended on women’s expert manipulation of its raw materials. The delicate finger work of seamstresses and modistes yielded frothy dresses and ethereal hats; the subtle, persuasive rhetoric of written chronicles resulted in savvy, targeted marketing campaigns of goods and behaviors; and the stylized visual splendor of the detailed drawing, engraving, and painting of fashion plates fed an aspirational fantasy that ended in consumption. Yet this fashion system paradoxically effaced many of the women on whom it depended. Behind the Seams examines these women—both working- and middle-class—who were key to shaping the fashion economy while remaining largely out of sight. Susan Hiner’s inquiry opens both fashion studies and French cultural studies to new ways of understanding the nineteenth century. Rather than repeating the familiar narrative of women as victims of fashion, this book tells a more complicated story. Indeed, Behind the Seams uncovers productive women workers, writers, and artists who achieved both agency and influence within a system that was undeniably oppressive. Although these women’s work and lives were masked by popular mythologizing, anonymity, and marginalization, Hiner’s close examination reveals how they developed sophisticated strategies for achieving active livings careers. This social history describes the women workers of the French fashion industry in the nineteenth century, first the world of les petites mains (little hands), and then the fashion columnists and illustrators—“fashion’s eyes and ears.” The story is foundational for the industry that endures to this day. At its origins, of course, the industry was practically revolutionary, for it involved immense social upheaval: women who had been compelled by convention to live sequestered lives, were now compelled to take work, and hence to enter the public sphere—and to negotiate the boundary between invisibility and visibility. Behind the Seams uses the metaphor of seams—equating hiddenness with respectability—to reveal a story more complex than previously acknowledged. Behind the Seams ushers women workers and their work out of obscurity and asks that we rethink women’s relation to fashion as one not only of passive consumption, but also, importantly, of productive agency and self-determination.

This book analyzes the early stages of the interior design profession as articulated within the circles involved in the decoration of the private home in the second half of nineteenth-century France. It argues that the increased presence of the modern, domestic interior in the visual culture of the nineteenth century enabled the profession to take shape. Upholsterers, cabinet-makers, architects, stage designers, department stores, taste advisors, collectors, and illustrators, came together to “sell” the idea of the unified interior as an image and a total work of art. The ideal domestic interior took several media as its outlet, including taste manuals, pattern books, illustrated magazines, art and architectural exhibitions, and department store catalogs. The chapters outline the terms of reception within which the work of each professional group involved in the appearance and design of the nineteenth-century French domestic interior emerged and focus on specific works by members of each group. If Chapter 1 concentrates on collectors and taste advisors, outlining the new definitions of the modern interior they developed, Chapter 2 focuses on the response of upholsterers, architects, and cabinet-makers to the same new conceptions of the ideal private interior. Chapter 3 considers the contribution of the world of entertainment to the field of interior design while Chapter 4 moves into the world of commerce to study how department stores popularized the modern interior with the middle classes. Chapter 5 returns to architects to understand how their engagement with popular journals shaped new interior decorating styles.

This chapter examines the collaboration between artist Joseph Mugnaini and Ray Bradbury for the latter's collection of short stories called The Golden Apples of the Sun. Mugnaini was a prolific book illustrator who emphasized fine arts over commercial art. He developed talent in a wide range of media, including oil and watercolor painting. This chapter considers how Mugnaini's art forged a connection between the two men that began in April 1952, when Bradbury saw a Mugnaini painting titled “The Caravan” in a Beverly Hills gallery. Bradbury regarded “The Caravan” as a grand metaphor for the long-deferred novel concept that had emerged from his story “The Black Ferris” under the working title of The Dark Carnival. In August 1952 Bradbury sent Doubleday typescripts or tear sheets for twenty-four stories which, after several revisions, became The Golden Apples of the Sun. This chapter discusses how Bradbury was able to link the Golden Applestories together visually through Mugnaini's cover art and interior illustrations.

Providing a detailed historical overview of animated film and television in the United States over more than a century, this book examines animation within the U.S. film and television industry as well as in the broader sociocultural context. From the early 1900s onwards, animated cartoons have always had a wide, enthusiastic audience. ‘I could not see any place in science for my creativity or imagination’, was the explanation, of a bright school leaver to the author, of why she had abandoned all study of science. Yet as any scientist knows, the imagination is essential to the immense task of re-creating a shared model of nature from the scale of the cosmos, through biological complexity, to the smallest subatomic structures. Encounters like that one inspired this book, which takes a journey through the creative process in the arts as well as sciences. Visiting great creative people of the past, it also draws on personal accounts of scientists, artists, mathematicians, writers, and musicians today to explore the commonalities and differences in creation. Tom McLeish finds that the ‘Two Cultures’ division between the arts and the sciences is not after all, the best classification of creative processes, for all creation calls on the power of the imagination within the constraints of form. Instead, the three modes of visual, textual, and abstract imagination have woven the stories of the arts and sciences together, but using different tools. As well as panoramic assessments of creativity, calling on ideas from the ancient world, medieval thought, and twentieth-century philosophy and theology, The Poetry and Music of Science illustrates its emerging story by specific close-up explorations of musical (Schumann), literary (James, Woolf, Goethe) mathematical (Wiles), and scientific (Humboldt, Einstein) creation. The book concludes by asking how creativity contributes to what it means to be human.
