Resumen
Paz Encina became a public figure in Paraguay after her first film, Hamaca Paraguaya (Paraguayan Hammock, 2006), won major awards and put Paraguayan cinema back on the international map for the first time in decades. In 2012, she was invited to “do something” visual with the Archivos del Terror (Archives of Terror) to mark the twentieth anniversary of the discovery of the heinous archives. Encina is not the only artist to make use of the Archives of Terror. Argentine Carlos Trilnick's Proyecto Archivos del Terror: Apuntes sobre el Plan Cóndor (Archives of Terror Project: Notes on the Condor Plan, 2013) also utilizes them. Natalia Brizuela posits that Paz Encina's use of the archival material from the Archives of Terror is different than Trilnick's. Her pieces demarcate specific spaces and insist on location, in contrast to Trilnick's work that is made to be packed up and reset in any space. Second, Encina's installations insist on disjointed forms of reenactment to establish a tension between embodiment of the spectator and disembodiment of the tortured bodies. She has since made three works that utilize the Archives of Terror. Her interest in the archival material never sought to generate a new archive but rather to engineer the spectatorial conditions for a site-specific experience. The fully embodied subject that emerged through the sound recordings became the motor for the work Encina produced on and around the Archives of Terror and the lengthy state-of-exception government that structured her country's life in the longest dictatorship to date in Latin America.

Resumen
Professionals in the television industry are working towards a certain future—rather than end—for the medium based on multi-platform storytelling, as well as multiple screens, distribution channels and streaming platforms. They do so rooted in institutional frameworks where traditional conceptualizations of television still persist. In this context, we reflect on the role of the national television archive as an agent of historical knowledge in the convergence era. Contextualisation and infrastructure function as important preconditions for users of archives to find their way through the enormous amounts of audio-visual material. Specifically, we consider the case of the Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision, taking a critical stance towards the archive’s practices of contextualisation and preservation of audio-visual footage in the convergence era. To do so, this article considers the impact of online circulation, contextualisation and preservation of audio-visual materials in relation to, first, how media policy complicates the re-use of material, and second, the archive’s use by television professionals and media researchers. This article reflects on the possibilities for and benefits of systematic archiving, developments in web archiving, and accessibility of production and contextual documentation of public broadcasters in the Netherlands. We do so based on an analysis of internal documentation, best practices of archive-based history programmes and their related cross-media practices, as well as media policy documentation. We consider how audio-visual archives should deal with the shift towards multi-platform productions, and argue for both a more systematic archiving of production and contextual documentation in the Netherlands, and for media researchers who draw upon archival resources to show a greater awareness of an archive’s history. In the digital age, even more people are part of the archive’s processes of selection and aggregation, affecting how the past is preserved through audio-visual images.

Resumen
In the management of infrastructure archives, there are three problems that need to be solved: the lack of smart infrastructure archives management paradigm with systematic and standardization, the fact that 2-dimensional paper-based infrastructure archives cannot accurately describe three-dimensional infrastructure archive information, and the problem of "information gap" caused by the lack of integration of infrastructure spatial information and archives. This paper proposed a new paradigm of smart infrastructure archive management. The Smart Infrastructure Archive Management Paradigm takes realizes the perception of infrastructure archive resources by combining the Internet of things technology, cloud computing and big data technology, as well as geographic information system. This paper proposes the Physical Archives Management Platform, the Archives Smart Repository Management Platform, the Infrastructure Archives Visual Management Platform. The research outputs have been applied to the Archives Management of Zhengzhou University and achieved good feedback.

Resumen
The article deals with a little-known and hardly imaginable in the context of pre-revolutionary clerical administration scientific direction of the Moscow Ecclesiastical Consistory Archive. Based on archival material and works of ecclesiastical Moscovites of the 19th - early 20th centuries the principles of the introduction of diocesan materials into science, as well as the parameters of departmental influence within the structures of church institutions on the example of the Moscow Ecclesiastical Consistory Archive are revealed. By the second quarter of the XIX century, the Consistory had acquired a large collection of diocesan documents with undisclosed information potential. Apart from departmental rules, the interest in the archive depended on psychological factors influencing research motivation. The establishment of science in the pre-revolutionary consistory archives was helped by a special committee which was set up in the first half of the 19th century to work with the archive complex. Its employees had to bear the main burden of searching for the necessary documents. The development of archives by the scientists was nonlinear: the periods of growth and decline alternated. Attention to the archive's documents was dulled by the change in OLDP's educational methodology, which replaced historical reconstructions with visual preaching. Nevertheless, the Archive's processing mechanisms were preserved and only the First World War interrupted further development of the information capacity of the Consistory archives. Thanks to the combined efforts of the clergy employed in the Archive, as well as the improved quality of the documents preserved, the Archive of the Diocesan Institution is gradually becoming a breeding ground for scholars studying the history of the Russian Church.

Resumen
This study aims to identify the types of art archives and arrange their arrangement designs in order to support the development of the tridharma of higher education at the Indonesian Institute of the Arts (ISI) Surakarta. The archives studied are the archives of performing arts that are the result of the Tridharma organization. The research was conducted using a qualitative descriptive method. That is describing a situation based on the facts that appear. The results of field observations show that the performing arts document consists of text, audio, and video. Its creation cannot be separated from previous works of art as a reference or source of works of art. Artwork documents are archives because they are the result of the tridharma process, but have only been managed as a library. The archives are dominated by final works of art from study programs at the Faculty of Performing Arts, results of artistic research from the Research Centre, and results of community service works of art from the Centre for Community Service. ISI Surakarta Archives Retention Schedule stipulates the archive as a static archive (permanent) after the retention period expires. Its arrangement requires a design according to archival standards. The design is made by taking into account the principle of provenance and original order. The design includes archive creators, archive classification (final project reports, research, and community service), archive indexes (reports, audio visual recordings, and intellectual property certificates), archive cross-linking to link different types of archives for the same archive, information archives, access conditions and archive service procedures. Resumen
In Eichmann in Jerusalem, Hannah Arendt illustrates the “lesser of two evils” principle by relating the peculiar story of a state archive of photographs of women in swimwear. During the Nazi period, she writes, to receive a marriage license Czech women applying to marry German soldiers were required to furnish a photograph of themselves dressed in swimwear. Taking its cue from this historic example, this study traces the evolution of a phenomenon the author describes as state-incriminating, coproduced archives, visual archives that are coproduced by representatives of the legal and political order in the name of law, and by the subjects who are obliged to participate in their creation: staging and documenting their own performance to become or remain lawful citizens. Examining this kind of visual surveillance and the “extraterritorial” quality of the produced images, a line is drawn to privacy infringement in today’s professed democracies.

Resumen
Besides presenting a creative account of reality as a digital format, the interactive documentary plays with the interconnectedness of intermediality by assembling various audio and visual sensory modalities, including moving images, photography, illustration, animation, text, and sound (Whitelaw 2002; Aston and Gaudenzi 2012; Nash 2021). Following this train of thought, using archival footage may open creative possibilities, as it entails repurposing historical, institutional, or personal audiovisual materials into new narratives. Several authors (Russel 1999; Bruzzi 2006; Haggith 2012; Baron 2014) have significantly contributed to the critical reflection on the use of archives within traditional documentary forms, considering the historical, creative, and ethical layers of such content manipulation. On the other hand, archives in interactive documentaries still require more critical analysis, as archival footage drifts from its indexical nature (Haggith 2012) through decontextualization or repurposing, affecting the textuality of the interactive narrative. This paper aims to merge these two territories and analyze how archival footage contributes to an epistemological account of reality in interactive documentaries. Drawing upon De Jong’s (2012) taxonomy to classify how archives are used in traditional documentaries, we analyze how two interactive documentaries - Welcome to Pine Point (Simmons and Shoebridge 2011) and A Short History of the Highrise (Cizek 2013) - reuse and repurpose analogue archives, while interplay these archival materials with other multimedia formats. Departing from the traditional formats of documentary film, De Jong identifies the following uses of archive footage: i) the archive as an illustration (a visual reference and indexical clue); ii) as a historical backdrop (a historical framework and context for the narrative); iii) a metaphorical tool (to produce subjective layers of meaning or create critical or ironic tones); iv) a narrative resource (to create a new dramatic narrative); v) and the archive as legal evidence (an indexical link to past events, referring to legal circumstances). De Jong’s taxonomy provides a methodological framework for the development of this study, which also aims to analyze the documentaries through the concept of “archive-image” (Didi-Huberman 2008); i. e., how archives are used in interactive documentaries and the meaning deriving from how such footage is placed within the navigation structure of the interface, contributing to the multimodal narrative. We argue that interactive documentary provides a territory of engagement and continuous momentum to revive the past by using the archive as historical validation and a shared collective memory space while reimagining new readings and engendering multiple archival imaginaries.

Resumen
This research pursues bringing to light the modern landscape of administering audio-visual archives at the National Archives of Zimbabwe (NAZ) and getting it on the journey towards digital preservation. The Victorian era paved the way to analogue technological evolution in the audio-visual archiving fraternity. A technological breakthrough initiated by a Frenchman, Louis Daguerre, led to the invention of a photographic image on a silver-coated copper plate medium in 1839. Again, in 1927, the outstanding Thomas Alva Edison positively documented audio on a rotating tin foil cylinder carrier. The form of documented memories in many African archives is mostly in conventional formats. Nonetheless, in the contemporary past, NAZ combined audio-visual archives and television archives that were raised up by the United Kingdom, which was the colonial supremacy during the period of 1890 to 1979. The British administration established the Colonial Film Unit at the commencement of the Second World War, in 1939, as part of political creativity focused on colonies. The NAZ audio-visual unit was born in 1988 under the library section to assist the information desires of the establishment, through the creation, purchase, organisation, preservation, and dissemination of audio-visual archives. The researcher used a qualitative case study methodology with an interpretivist perspective where the main focus of the research was on the NAZ’s Harare head office. Interviews, document analysis and observations were used as the major data collecting tools. The results showed that the institution houses audio-visual materials and is still struggling to preserve all the formats digitally. Lastly, the study recommends the adoption of digital preservation mechanisms to facilitate the proper care and access of these precious non-conventional records as declared by UNESCO.

Resumen
The study sought to determine the role that the National Archives of Namibia plays in the management of audio visuals in an attempt to curtail the deterioration of audio-visual archives which are kept in various organisations, some of which are unknown to the National Archives of Namibia. A qualitative method was applied in the study. The case study used the interpretive paradigm which enabled the researcher to triangulate the data collection instruments. Interviews, questionnaires and observation checklists were used to collect data. Content analysis was carried out to analyse data from interviews, document review and the observations. While Excel software provided descriptive statistics on graphs. The results indicated that AV materials were created and stored by various organisations, including the National Archives of Namibia, which oversees the management of all records. The Archives Act (Act 12 of 1992), section 4(1), gives a mandate to the National Archives of Namibia for control over records and archives of all formats in government offices, offices of local authorities and statutory institutions. Nonetheless, there are instances where AV materials are not deposited or stored in appropriate conditions. It is also apparent that different cataloguing and classification systems are used by different organisations. It is clear that most of the organisations manage AV materials in the same way as paper formats records. There is also an inadequately skilled workforce who were given a responsibility to manage AV materials. The study was limited to the Khomas region. Since there are 14 regions in Namibia, the findings cannot be generalized to other regions. Future studies should cover other regions. The results point to the need for the National Archives of Namibia to adopt an integrated approach to the management of AV records. This will require the NAN to work in cooperation with public sector institutions and empower them to preserve AV materials while, at the same time, they continue to deposit copies with the National Archives of Namibia. Unlike previous studies on management of audio visual archives in Namibia, this study included other organisations. The results give a clear picture of the role the National Archives plays in the management of audio visual records and archives.

Resumen
Abstract Increased access to visual archives and the proliferation of digitized images related to sexuality have led a growing number of scholars in recent years to place images and visual practices at the center of critical historical inquiries of sexual desire, subjectivity, and embodiment. At the same time, new critical histories of sexual science serve both to expand the temporal and geographical frames for investigating the historical relationships of sex and visual production, and to generate new lines of inquiry and reshape visual studies more broadly. The contributors to this issue invite us to ask: What new questions and challenges for the study of sex and sexual science are posed by critical studies of the visual? How are new visual methodologies that focus on archives changing the contours of historical knowledge about sex and sexuality? What—and where—are new methodologies still needed? “Visual Archives of Sex” aims to illuminate current research that centers visual media in the history of sexuality and that interrogates contemporary historiographies.

The 20th Century saw a movement from the Industrial Revolution to what we could call the Communication Revolution, and perhaps a newer revolution in the past 20 years, which we could characterise as the Information Revolution. The Communication Revolution began with the discovery of photography (and shortly thereafter, cinema) at the end of the 19th Century. The Lumiere brothers in France, Edward Muybridge in England, and Thomas Edison in America explored the possibilities of moving and still images. Rapid expansion of technology and opportunity saw the rise of revolutionary cinema in Russia, and the emergence of Hollywood - the beginnings of an industry that today engulfs our world with images.

You may not know about the audio-visual material held in the archives at the College: it has not previously been sorted or listed in any way. As a specialist film archivist I looked through the collection, assessed its condition for future accessibility and advised on conservation and preservation issues. The small collections of films seem to have come mostly from the personal collections of fellows of the College, who donated films in their lifetime or after their deaths.

Resumen
Centering on two recent participatory archive projects, Jacqueline Hoàng Nguyễn’s The Making of An Archive (2014-present), and Regent Park Film Festival’s Home Made Visible (2017-2019), this essay examines how diasporic archives “densify” authoritative records, and allow us to think generatively about archival movements and accretions. Both projects gathered and digitised archives from members of diasporic and racialised communities. Through public calls and workshops soliciting amateur archivists’ personal and familial still and moving image troves, these projects prioritised excavating and inscribing quotidian and ephemeral records as a response to Canadian multiculturalism’s imposed silences. The essay approaches diaspora – and diasporic archives – not (just) through rubrics of loss and obsolescence, but through the concept of hauntological thickening, arguing that these two projects intervene on authoritative and singular archival narratives by densifying the latter with occluded histories, affects, and textural traces of transfer. It also examines how quotidian visual records offer hauntological refractions of official narratives, and become vehicles for imbrications of personal, familial, and national histories and discourses. Finally, the essay concludes with an exploration of how the archives engage audiences through affective and sensorial registers.

Resumen
The Archives de la Planète is a collection of visual material – about 100 hours of film, 72000 autochromes and 4000 stereoscopic images – established between 1908 androughly 1932. While the project was of Kahn’s inspiration (and also financed by him),the human geographer Jean Brunhes served as its scientific director. Its purpose was to document the diversity, but even more so, the underlying unity of human life and activity all over the globe. It seems thus fitting that Brunhes used a cartographic logicin mapping the “positive facts” of his science, relying on visual documentation. Thisarticle examines some of the temporal complexities and contingencies of representation inherent in the autochrome part of the collections. As archives within the archive, they upset the cartographic logic of the project.

The role of technology in an institution is beneficial for any activities, especially in managing documents administration, which is now most of the company used digital archive systems. That's because the manual archive system is considered less effective and efficient, where it takes a lot of space and time to search for document archives. Microsoft Access is a windows-based database processing program with Visual Basic for Application (VBA), commonly used to create a windows-based application. The purpose of this paper is to make an administration letter and archives system based on Microsoft Access. The results of this design have passed the trial process for approximately two weeks and received a positive response. The system design can be run well, and its functions correctly without errors. So it can help the secretary or other employees to manage all documents (letters and archives) more accessible and faster.

Resumen
Oral archives are important components of dance archives but are not frequently discussed. In this context I am looking at the George Balanchine Foundation's Interpreters Archive and Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker's and Bojana Cvejić’s publication entitled The Choreographer's Score, the latter as basis for a possible archive. The oral descriptions provided in those projects transmit a form of knowledge about dance and choreographic practice that cannot be offered through physical demonstration and haptic exchanges of body postures and movement qualities alone. The oral transmission of information works here differently from written discourses, but both forms of documentation of dance can be seen as informing each other, providing traces of the choreographic practice that counteract the ephemerality of dance performances.

Resumen
Determining the value of archival documents is a crucial professional content of archival work. There have been several initial studies on the theory of determining the value of audio-visual archives in Vietnam so far; however, due to the specificity of this type of document, the application still faces many difficulties. This article presents systematic research and analyses how to apply the theory of determining the value of audio-visual archives, a type of archive with specific characteristics in terms of origin, content of the document, and its appearance. The research methods used in this article are research methods of archival science, historical science, and interdisciplinary methods that use the perspectives and approaches of several different scientific disciplines. The result serves as a theoretical basis for further research which specifically considers the value of pictures, films as well as audio and video recordings for in-depth research and for agencies with audio-visual materials to apply appropriately; and as the basis for competent State agencies to promulgate documents regulating and guiding activities in determining the value of audio-visual documents.

Resumen
In the field of archive depots, the West Java Province Village and Community Empowerment Service offers inactive archive management as one of its services. The West Java Province Village and Community Empowerment Service is responsible for keeping, organizing, and safeguarding archives that have been in the processing unit for more than two years. The goal of this research is to help archivists manage inactive archives more effectively and efficiently. Material gathering tactics included interviews and the addition of inactive archive data based on data collected in each field. Software is designed using the waterfall process. According to the findings, there are a number of issues that impede the archive management system that still employs the manual method. As a result, in this study, an inactive records management information system was designed using the Unified Modeling Language (UML) and implemented using the Visual Basic programming language with the.NET framework 4.0 and Ms. Access as the database. An approach for testing applications is called black box testing. The goal of this application is to make archive administration more effective and efficient.

Resumen
Data mining belongs to knowledge discovery, which is the process of revealing implicit, unknown, and valuable information from a large amount of fuzzy application data. The potential information revealed by data mining can help decision makers adjust market strategies and reduce market risks. The information excavated must be real and not universally known, and it can be the discovery of a specific problem. Data mining algorithms mainly include the neural network method, decision tree method, genetic algorithm, rough set method, fuzzy set method, association rule method, and so on. Archives management, also known as archive work, is the general term for various business works, in which archives directly manage archive entities and archive information and provide utilization services. It is also the most basic part of national archives. Hospital archives are an important part of hospital management, and hospital archives are the accumulation of work experience and one of the important elements for building a modern hospital. Hospital archives are documents, work records, charts, audio recordings, videos, photos, and other types of documents, audio-visual materials, and physical materials, such as certificates, trophies, and medals obtained by hospitals, departments, and individuals. The purpose of this paper is to study the application of intelligent archives management based on data mining in hospital archives management, expecting to use the existing data mining technology to improve the current hospital archives management. This paper investigates the age and educational background of hospital archives management workers and explores the relationship between them and the quality of archives management. Based on the decision number algorithm, on the basis of the database, the hospital data is classified and analyzed, and the hospital file data is classified and processed through the decision number algorithm to improve the system data processing capability. The experimental results of this paper show that among the staff working in the archives management department of the hospital, 20-to-30-year-olds account for 46.2% of the total group. According to the data, the staff in the archives management department of the hospital also tends to be younger. Among the staff under the age of 30, the file pass rate was 98.3% and the failure rate was 1.7%. Among the staff over 50 years old, the file pass rate was 99.9% and the failure rate was 0.1%. According to the data, the job is related to the experience of the employee.

Michael Takeo Magruder, visual artist and researcher, discusses his digital and new media art and practice with Jeremy Pilcher, lawyer and academic, whose research engages with the intersection of art and law. Takeo's work asks viewers to question their relationship both to and within the real-time data flows generated by emerging technologies and the implications these have for archives. His art concerns the way institutions use such systems to create narratives that structure societies. This conversation discusses how Takeo's practice invites us, as individuals, to critically reflect on the implications of the stories that are both told to and about us by using gathered and distributed data.

Resumen
While the Council of Europe as an Intergovernmental Organization has proven remarkably resilient, its archives and records appear to be increasingly fragile. This article documents and analyses the development of records management and archives management within the Council of Europe between 2000 and 2003. This was a period that saw major changes in the way that records were treated in the organization, notably the preparation and implementation of an organization-wide archives policy, and the introduction of an archives management training programme for Council of Europe staff. The concept of archives and records was extended from paper to electronic and audio-visual materials. An internal network of archive correspondents was introduced to increase communication, consultation, co-ordinate RM and facilitate the implementation of the archives policy, and a series of measures was taken to improve access to the archives and records. It was during this period that the first steps were taken in the introduction of archives and records management standards ISAD(G) and ISO 15489. The article highlights the lack of continuity of RM and the increasing vulnerability of records within the organization, suggesting that the lack of professional staff is the most critical issue; the analysis of the developments in this period also illustrates the impact that personal initiatives can have in such a context.

Audio-visual records and archives constitute a fundamental heritage that satisfies multiple needs, including education, training, research and entertainment. As such, there is a need to appropriately preserve and conserve them so they can be accessed for as long as they are needed. In spite of their significant role in safeguarding cultural heritage, audio-visual records and archives, are often neglected and accorded less attention than paper-based records, especially in developing countries. Hence, there is a risk of losing information held in audio-visual form. That is why this study looked at how the National Archives of Zambia (NAZ) and the Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation (ZNBC) preserve audio-visual materials to ensure long-term accessibility of the information. The study investigated the types of audio-visual collections held, the storage equipment used, measures put in place to ensure long-term accessibility of audio-visual materials, the disaster preparedness plans in place to safeguard audio-visual archives and the major challenges encountered in the preservation of audio-visual materials. The findings of the study revealed that films (microfilm and microfiche), photographs and manuscripts, and video (video tapes) and sound recordings (compact cassette) constitute the biggest audio-visual collection preserved. The equipment used to store audio-visual materials included open shelves, specialised cabinets, electronic database for digitised materials, aisle mobiles and cupboards. The measures taken to ensure the long-term accessibility of audio-visual collection included digitisation and migration of endangered records and archives; fumigation of storage areas; conservation of damaged materials and regulation of temperatures and humidity in the storage areas. The disaster preparedness plans in place mostly covered structure insurance; protection against fire and water by way of installing fire extinguishers; smoke sensors; fire detectors and construction of purpose-built structures. The major challenges faced were financial constraints; technological obsolescence; lack of playback equipment; limited training; lack of strong back-up systems and inadequate storage facilities.

Resumen
Archivists and art librarians are well versed in developing activities and projects using archives and library materials in object-based learning activities and engaging artists and creative practitioners with archives and special collections. But what does framing the uses of archives as creative activity really mean for the way in which we work on a practical level? I expand this question from the initial blog post I wrote: Possibilities of archives (storyingthepast.wordpress.com). Can we, like the creative practitioners we engage with, be truly creative – and if so, what could this look like? It is a pertinent question because creativity, in part, enables us to progress and innovate as the archive and library sectors continue to evolve.I take an interdisciplinary approach to developing workshops as demonstrative case studies, with intersections from archival theory, education, and the visual arts; I first outline what creativity could look like when developing Creative Workshops from within an archival context. I also outline and reflect on how being creative can be beneficial to our profession as well as to the wider arts communities who engage with art archives and special collections.

Protecting Oroqen folk songs is not only the only way to reproduce Chinese traditional music culture, but also the only way to rebuild its national spirit and enhance national cultural confidence. In view of the modernity problems of Oroqen folk songs in the current process of inheritance and protection, this paper puts forward the management and optimization methods of music audio-visual archives resources under the background of big data. This paper analyzes and discusses the resource management path of folk music audio-visual archives in Oroqen in the era of big data and designs a set of perfect digital music audio-visual archives resource management platform, which can not only facilitate the collection, storage, management, and utilization of paper files and electronic files in archives, but also optimize the retrieval algorithm of archives. The resource allocation algorithm based on Nash equilibrium solution is used to optimize it. The simulation results show that the proposed method reduces the information resource allocation time and improves the demand satisfaction.

Resumen
On June 16, 2008, the National Library of Ireland officially accepted the Irish Queer Archive, a community-based archive of lesbian and gay historical and cultural materials, a transfer both literal and symbolic, marking the importance of lesbian and gay history to the nation's history. This essay briefly examines the issues associated with this transfer of materials to an institutional home, a transfer that confers legitimacy and authority but also raises questions about access and inclusion (particularly gender inclusion), as well as questions about the nature and purpose of queer archives. To illustrate some of these questions, the author offers a number of textual and visual materials: a small archive project of Irish queer history, concentrating primarily on literary materials (that have not been published or have limited availability) and organized around four broad categories of history, space, language, and performance. Included here are: excerpts from Sea Urchins, an unpublished but historically important play by Aodhan Madden, a play inspired by one of the most important public protests in Irish gay and lesbian history, the 1983 Stop Violence Against Gays and Women March; an unpublished English translation of one section of Micheál Ó Conghaile's groundbreaking novel, Sna Fir; examples of lesbian visual culture; a collection of poems from community journals (suggesting, perhaps, the importance of artistic expression to political activism); and imagery from Alternative Miss Ireland and the Emerald Warriors gay rugby club.

Resumen
Abstract This paper describes a method consisting of both automated statistical screening and manual quality control through expert visual inspection, which produces a historical ocean temperature archive of high quality—that is, nearly all profiles are unique (duplicate elimination) and 95% of bad data is eliminated. The complete process involves comprehensive duplicate elimination, an unreasonable gradient check, and statistical screening to distill out suspect profiles, which are then only eliminated (or partially so) during an expert manual visual inspection step. Statistical screening was optimized using an archive of known quality. Two iterations of statistical screening were required to identify the bulk of the bad data. Of an archive of about 121 000 profiles, the authors found they had to manually inspect 35% of profiles to remove 95% of the bad data. While costly, they argue such an effort is worthwhile so that the historical ocean temperature archives, which have cost the global community millions of dollars to obtain, are made more immediately useful for climate and ocean sciences. An archive of upper ocean temperature profiles from the Indian Ocean is near completion and extensions into the Pacific Ocean have begun.
