Texto completoThe perception of how pre-modern family groups regulated, organized, identified, and reproduced themselves is shaped by the creation, use and maintenance set by the organizational archives. Based on this assumption, this study analyzes the viscounts of Vila Nova de Cerveira archive as well as a group of families' generations that played a role both in its formation and preservation from the 14th to the 17th centuries, namely the Lima, Brito Nogueira, and Lima Brito Nogueira generations. This investigation sought to examine how these generations documented themselves, how they transformed their records into an archive, and how they used them to consolidate one another as a group with a heritage, memory, and identity of their own. Ultimately, it was questioned how these uses played a role in the establishment and strengthening of the house of the viscounts of Vila Nova de Cerveira as an institution until the 17th century. In pursuit of this objective, an Historical Archivistics approach was selected with the purpose of looking for the interchange of theories and methodologies of History, Archival Science, Information Science and Historical Anthropology in the analysis of archives. The research path was presently initiated by questioning the Visconde de Vila Nova de Cerveira e Marqueses de Ponte de Lima fonds and by mapping scattered fonds and collection records which belonged to the organizational archives of the abovementioned groups. With that, an understanding of several intertextualities affecting the intelligibility of the past represented in these records was deemed necessary before any interpretation of its context could be executed. To better contextualize the mapped records associated with the generations in the study, an organic framework was prepared, based on the systemic model proposed by Malheiro da Silva. This classification framework is made available, along with the standardized archival description of a section of the records that were analyzed in this study, through the AtoM software. In addition to the existing records, in the inventories produced by these generations, references to unaccounted records that belonged to their archives, were also collected. Simultaneously, efforts were made to elucidate the numerous constraints associated with the reconstitution of both existing and missing records, the choices that were made, and the operations carried out regarding the records. Finally, the qualitative analysis of the reconstructed corpus allowed us to conclude that the groups under study were institutionalized mainly through the transmission of entails and of properties and rights granted by the Crown. They formed a family-institution or House, organized by each generation under the authority of a pater familias. These generations used their archives to prove ownership of property and privileges, as well as to facilitate property management and its income. The archives also served as a foundation for narratives concerning the collective memory(ies) and identity(ies) of the group, especially for the Lima Brito Nogueira generations. The families as institutions were entities in constant configuration, as was the archive supporting them. Consequently, institutional consolidation depended on ongoing efforts made by each generation in order to transmit a cohesive cultural legacy to a representative of the same or next generation and forge a sense of group identity, as well as to convey the records turned into an archive that supported this construction

Texto completoHaving a proper home is a subject that reminds us of a distant past, where everyone connected with architecture is making an effort to abolish it. However and despite their efforts and the state housing policies the problem and the inequalities between societies are still there. In Portugal, more specifically in Vila Nova de Cerveira, those inequalities are visible in lower middle class families, that due to what’s happening in real estate, the speculation caused by tourism, seasonal housing and other factors, are struggling to find a home that provides living conditions nowadays. Having this in mind, this work intends to fix those issues with two different goals. First, we need to identify houses that can be used by lower middle class families. The second one will create a single family house project with controlled costs in Vila Nova de Cerveira. Through these goals we intend to find the ideal house for these families, fulfilling housing standards, new personal and professional experiences that these houses will have in this pandemic reality. In order to obtain all necessary information, there will be a research based on the multi-case method of a comparative nature. We'll gather information based on existing documents, using pictures as a support for reminding and studying certain details and information that are yet to be found.

Texto completoAbstract: The transformations occurred on the military structures of medieval origin until the XXI century, motivated the realization of this study / project. The military structure's space had to adapt to the new socio-cultural needs, to a better comprehension of its arquitecture and of its relationship with the urban space. The investigation was developed from the theoritical fundamentation through the definition of three great concepts: patrimony, urban space and historic center. Posteriorly, three study cases were analyzed. The analysis of the study's object, center on the D.Dinis castle, focuses through the revitalization of the urban space on historic centers. This kind of revitalization was patent in the projects of the castles of Linhares, Torres Novas and in the Idanha-a-Velha wall. The analysis of these revitalization projects are based on the definition of the architectural characteristics evident on the military architecture of medieval origin and in its interaction with the urban spaces of the historic centers, public spaces of election. The goals of this study / project consist in identifing different kinds of revitalization of the urban space in medieval origin's castles, to extract strategies to the revitalization of the urban space in medieval origin’s castles and define in spatial level the best solution to revitalize the D.Dinis Castle. The investigation methodology is based on the multi case method, of comparing nature, of the three castles of medieval origin. The information collection techniques are based on the documental analysis, interviews and local observation (field notes) of the revitalization projects of the castles in study, to signal the architectural and spatial characteristics, taking into account its relationship with the urban space. The study demonstrated the importance of the investigation in the proposed theme, being this of relevance to the revitalization project of the medieval origin castles. The purpose of the investig ation / project is to perform a contribute about the obsolete urban spaces, in the event of the interior and exterior spaces in disuse of the military structures of medieval origin. This study / project is relevant due to the functional deficiencies of these structures, which were dragging until the XXI century. Proposing thus a solution which aims to return this spaces to the community, contributing to the development and valorization of the castle like a monument of the historic center.

Texto completoAbstract: The border region of the Portuguese Minho Valley and the Lower Galician Minho corresponds to an area marked by the presence of diversified heritage, which once had a strategic defensive role. Such monuments are witnesses of the past, which should be respected for their historical and cultural value. Some eventually became ruins, others reached present time with different uses from the original ones. The fortifications built and/or strengthened for defense in the Restoration War characterize an era and the method of intervening on the territory in a particular way. Various conditions – economic, cultural and social, etc. – of the local people and of the communities that built them and use them, manifest themselves in the plurality of types. These implications resulted in a regional differentiation through the adaptation to the local specificity. Built in strategic defensive spots in national territory, on the Minho border the fortifications are symbols of a past in which they had an important role, having been essential in the consolidation, protection and delimitation of the national boundaries. They have been gradually losing their usefulness and their functional value of protection and security has been disappearing. In some cases, their use has been readapted to other purposes, in other cases they were relegated to abandonment or destruction due to a sum of related causes, presenting conservation problems. The Dissertation consists in the Project for the Rehabilitation of the S. Francisco Fortification, classified as a monument, erected in the Lovelhe village in Vila Nova de Cerveira, which had a strategic defensive role of the Nation in the Peninsular and Napoleon Wars. The focus of the Project development is to assess a more correct intervention approach in the fortification, contextualizing it as a still useful element, highlighting the relations with the area and referencing them to a new understanding of the place where it is located. A performance strategy is established, which predicts the valuation of the group in which the monument is inserted as touristic and/or cultural potential, due to its recognized quality as historical-archeological witness. The indications of the Director Plan of the Border Fortifications in the Minho Valley/Lower Minho were verified. This document of heritage promotion has contributed to increase the knowledge of the object of study, using it as a lever for the development of its understanding and other starting questions. The Fortification rehabilitation will make it possible to return that structure to the population, due to the interest it involves, in addition to its inherent symbolism and heritage relevance.
The historic centres as public spaces, part of a functional, cultural and social reality, that are constantly changing and responding to the most diverse demands of modern times, involve the need to adapt efficient intervention practices and their correct control. Thus, the general goal of this dissertation is to elaborate an evaluation methodology concerning the urban upgrading of historic centres, using as a case study, Vila Nova de Cerveira, and, as a consequence, allowing for the creation of a practical and theoretical tool, useful at the moment of interfering in a public space, with the notoriety and instability to which a historic centre is subjected. In this context, and in a first phase, this study approaches the area of the planning process and of the interventions stages involved. In a second phase, it aims at evaluation using the analysis of the obtained results, several qualitative and quantitative aspects, as well as the analysis of the public participation. The qualitative evaluation is composed by a visual analysis in a way to draw conclusions on the improvement of the changes that occurred on the diverse public spaces which were the targets of the intervention. The quantitative evaluation was made in terms of costs associated to the various works that were done, as well as in terms of implantation areas. In the case of the public participation and facing its importance in all the upgrading process, a debate about the obtained results took place, based on the wishes of the resident population. In conclusion, the study evidences the differentiating quality aspects of the upgraded public spaces, pointing out the tuning verified on the changes that occurred, comparing it with the main wishes of the population. So, the conclusions are made according to the revitalisation of functions and to the improvement of the quality of life of the population, in harmony with the values and memories of the historic centre.

Texto completoIn a moment when European population, and the Portuguese one in particular, is ageing a lot, it’s necessary to think about this fact. The present year was proclaimed European Year of Active Ageing and Intergenerational Help. Thinking about population’s ageing, we’ve made an analysis of the existing work about this theme in Psychology, including our work in the perspective of Life Cycle Psychology, developed by Paul Baltes and co-workers. It stands that development extends to the entire life cycle, and that the subject has an active role in his own ageing process. Purposes: Having these theoretical assumptions we’ve wanted to evaluate perceived quality of life by elderly from Vila Nova de Cerveira, our place of work and residence. More specifically, we’ve tried to know if activity degree really influences elderly’s perceived quality of life. Methods: To make the study presented in this paper we’ve obtained a sample, divided in three groups, with different activity patterns: one more active (students from Unisénior of V. N. Cerveira), one intermediate (residents in rural areas without social activity/participation) and one less active (Centro Social Paroquial de Gondarém Home Support Service’s clients). We’ve passed to the three groups the Assessment of Quality of Life (AQoL), an instrument which evaluates the perceived quality of life by the subjects, including five dimensions: health/illness, independent life, social relationships, senses and psychological well-being. Results: After statistical analysis of the results, we’ve identified significant differences between the more active group and the other two groups, which have no significant differences between them. These results confirm that more activity leads to a better perception of quality of life. The overall perceived quality of life was good, what shows the influence of individual experience and expectations in the success of ageing and perceived quality of life. It has been shown as well the usefulness to improve elderly quality of life of institutions as Senior Universities and Home Support Services.

Texto completoAbstract: In rural Portugal, the main causes for the change observed in recent decades have distinct origins. Several authors argue that the main cause for socioeconomic and demographic changes occurring mostly in rural areas following the sixties, is due to emigration. A wide range of architectural styles brought by the immigrants came, inevitably, to integrate the landscape. Although, it is not the first time in Portugal’s history that these phenomena of architectural patterns transformation are discerned, it becomes fundamental the study of their impacts. In rural areas, it is difficult to distinguish at first, which are the households from immigrants and from people that did not emigrate, due to the similarities existing between them. In response to the objectives, it is proposed to identify the mutability of popular architecture from the vocabulary introduced by immigrants and consequently, the definition of the morphological changes occurring in rural households (1960-2000) in Vila Nova de Cerveira. Methodologically, this research is a comparative study of 150 enquires, of descriptive and documental type, based on methods of qualitative and quantitative analysis (as described in Chapter 1). The investigation is carried out in five parts. Chapter 2 creates the ground to a theoretical framework and chapter 3 to the analysis of the inquiry results. Chapter 4 triangulates the data from where it emerges a consistent systematization of results, thus providing data to obtain findings and the development of conclusions (chapter 5). This research aims to provide an valuable contribution to knowledge and a better understanding of changes affecting Minho rural architecture since 1960, as well as the architectural styles introduced in the post-migration period. Knowledge of interventions in rural construction resulted on the identification of the specificity of different households morphology in Vila Nova de Cerveira.
Dias, Silvy Alves.
The rising concern about architectural Heritage, essentially caused by the increase in social transformation rhythm and the exorbitant tourism development, led to extra research and design practice on rehabilitation. However, the diversity and unfamiliarity with techniques and methods of intervention have revealed, in many situations, carelessness towards the building's identity and heritage. Awareness of this circumstance triggered the main issue of this project (following a methodology based on Project-based research): How to Rehabilitate the Rehabilitated, which focuses on the case study, the Pousada de Vila Nova de Cerveira, designed by Alcino Soutinho (1982). It is a set of buildings inserted in a Property of Public Interest, the Castle, helping to test and to consider contents and ways of intervention. With this research it is intended to alert to this problematic, demonstrating the viability and relevance of rehabilitating buildings rehabilitated a priori, as well as, highlighting the need for new interventions, without distorting the essence of the buildings. The research starts with a review of buildings, which has suffered a vast number of interventions, to obtain different ways of rehabilitating the rehabilitated. For the development, of this intervention project, a meticulous analysis of the building tissue was carried out, exploring its timeline, its various historical and architectural strata. In this way, this research project emerges as a need for the awareness of this Heritage, which is vacant, allied to the opportunity to implement a program that welcomes the community and visitors. In this study, the principle of intervention is guided by the identity components of the Castle and the premises developed by Alcino Soutinho. (Re)habilitate the Rehabilitated is a decoding of the building, implying the removal of all layers to understand its essence and recognize the different intervention ways. It creates a subtle dialogue between the past and the future, where the pre-existence cohabitates with the existence.
