Resumen
In contrast to computationally advanced methods of road pavement dynamic analysis, the one-dimensional, simple method is derived on the basis of visco-elastic simple beam lying on generalized Winkler visco-elastic foundation. By virtue of least square method the visco-elastic constants could be estimated with technically admissible accuracy. The introduced method is useful enough to predict any pavement deformation process in the range of linear visco-elasticity.

Resumen
The generalized dynamical theory of thermo-elasticity proposed by Green and Lindsay is applied to study the propagation of harmonically time-dependent thermo-visco-elastic plane waves of assigned frequency in an infinite visco-elastic solid of Kelvin-Voigt type, when the entire medium rotates with a uniform angular velocity. A more general dispersion equation is deduced to determine the effects of rotation, visco-elasticity, and relaxation time on the phase-velocity of the coupled waves. The solutions for the phase velocity and attenuation coefficient are obtained for small thermo-elastic couplings by the perturbation technique. Taking an appropriate material, the numerical values of the phase velocity of the waves are computed and the results are shown graphically to illustrate the problem.

Resumen
Considering the rheological mechanical characteristics of rock mass, a viscous-plastic model of rock mass which can describe the acceleration creep stage of rock mass was proposed. Moreover, combining with viscous-elastic shearing rheological model of rock mass in series, a new constitutive model of visco-elasticity-plasticity considering the rheology was constructed. Due to the shearing rheological curves of granite, the model of visco-elasticity-plasticity considering the rheology was identified and the rheological parameters of the model were obtained. The comparison between the viscous-elastic-plastic rheological model of rock mass and experimental result of granite shows that the accelerating rheological properties of rock mass can be depicted effectively by the constitutive model of visco-elasticity-plasticity considering the rheology.

Resumen
Effect of Hall currents and suspended particles is considered on the hydromagnetic stability of a compressible, electrically conducting Walters? (Model B?) elastico-viscous fluid. After linearizing the relevant hydromagnetic equations, the perturbation equations are analyzed in terms of normal modes. A dispersion relation governing the effects of visco-elasticity, magnetic field, Hall currents and suspended particles is derived. It has been found that for stationary convection, the Walters? (Model B?) fluid behaves like an ordinary Newtonian fluid due to the vanishing of the visco-elastic parameter. The compressibility and magnetic field have a stabilizing effect on the system, as such their effect is to postpone the onset of thermal instability whereas Hall currents and suspended particles are found to hasten the onset of thermal instability for permissible range of values of various parameters. Also, the dispersion relation is analyzed numerically and the results shown graphically. The critical Rayleigh numbers and the wavenumbers of the associated disturbances for the onset of instability as stationary convection are obtained and the behavior of various parameters on critical thermal Rayleigh numbers has been depicted graphically. The visco-elasticity, suspended particles and Hall currents (hence magnetic field) introduce oscillatory modes in the system which were non-existent in their absence.

Resumen
Even though every layer of pavement structure is important and affects pavement performance, the asphalt layers visco-elasticity plays significant role. Bitumen properties, as well as asphalt mixture properties, vary depending on temperature and loading conditions. These variations influence entire pavement bearing capacity and has to be evaluated in pavement design. The main challenge is material behaviour description through simple models to incorporate them to pavement design. Generally, pavements are designed using Multilayer Elastic Theory assuming that all materials are elastic, isotropic, and homogenous. This paper presents analysis of two pavement structures response calculated according to three pavement design approaches. The dynamic modulus and phase angle of asphalt mixtures was estimated using Hirsch model after binder complex shear modulus tests. The visco-elastic behaviour was described with rheological Huet-Sayegh model and pavement responses estimation was done using MnLayer and ViscoRoute2 software. The analysis reviled static and dynamic load influence on pavement structure based on elastic and visco-elastic properties of asphalt layers. This allowed optimisation of layer thicknesses and determination of more cost beneficial pavement structure with appropriate performance.

Resumen
Abstract The present paper analyzes an unsteady magnetohydrodynamic blood flow model of an visco-elastic fluid through an inclined porous stenosed artery with body acceleration and slip effect. Navier-Stokes equations have been used to describe the blood flow model. The governing equation of blood flow is solved by an analytic method by considering blood as an incompressible, visco-elastic fluid, and suspension of RBC’s in plasma. Axial velocity, blood acceleration, flow rate, and shear stress are derived numerically by using the finite Laplace and Hankel transformation and their inverse. The effect of parameters such as the visco-elasticity parameter, Womersley number, Hartmann number, inclination angle, parameter of slip, and body acceleration frequency is analyzed. Axial velocity reduces as the Hartmann number and visco-elasticity parameter enhance and it enhances with the enhancement of the slip parameter and inclination angle. The study is beneficial for finding the effect of slip parameter, porosity factor and Hartmann number when a human body is exposed to MRI and CT scan.

The visco-elastic behaviors of coated fabrics are important for the design of membrane structure. In this paper, Ferrari 1002 is taken as the research object. The tests of creep and stress relaxation are carried out under five temperatures (23, 40, 50, 60, and 70 ) and three initial stresses (4, 15, and 26 kN/m), respectively. Results show that temperature and initial stress has great effects on the visco-elasticity of coated fabrics. With temperature and initial stress increasing, the visco-elastic behaviors are more obvious. The creep strain can be ignored compared with the corresponding elastic strain. After 24h, the remaining stress is less than 80% the initial stress. This paper can be references for the design of membrane structure.

Resumen
In this study, the improved model of CAM with clear parameter was introduced. The visco-elasticity of asphalt mixture under broad temperature and frequency was studied and the properties of asphalt mixture at high asphalt and low temperature of was described by fitting the parameters of CAM model. The four equations of CAM model can be utilized in analysis of visco-elasticity of asphalt mixture and the physical meaning of the parameters in equations was very clear; Through nonlinear curve fitting , the CAM model was found to overcome the defect of deviation from the start and the end fitting; For one kind of asphalt mixture, the complex shear modulus and storage shear modulus was higher in same frequency at lower temperature, and the elasticity was in dominant position significantly; At middle temperature, the modulus of asphalt mixture became smaller; At high temperature, although the modulus was lower, the elasticity was higher. At middle-high temperature, the modulus of asphalt mixture remained smaller and the ratio of elasticity was minimum value, and asphalt mixture was recognized as typical visco-elastic body and was destroyed easily by the deformation disease.

Resumen
Mechanical properties of biological structures affect functional ability of organism. Current knowledge is prevailingly concentrated on static characteristics. The present work analyzed dynamic mechanical responses of various biological materials. Following biological structures were measured: samples of aorta walls of human origin and from model organisms, human body surface, and samples of bones of various types and origin. Linear approximation leads in case of aortas and bones to simple Voight's model. Modules of elasticity (in tensile loading) of aortas were from 102 kPa to 103 kPa. Module of elasticity of bones were from 106 Pa to 1010 Pa. Viscous coefficients of aortas were from 102 Pa.s to 103 Pa.s. Viscous coefficients of bones were from 100 Pa.s to 102 Pa.s. Nonlinearities: We found that following types of nonlinearities are significant: strain-stress relationship, time-dependent changes in elastic as well as viscose bodies. Strain and stress is well approximated by quadratic function σ = a ε2 + b ε + c with parameters a = 1833, b = 135, c = 20.0 (porcine aorta). Time-dependence in elastic coefficient: At the beginning of responses the elastic coefficient was of 42% lower then at 0.02 s of duration of the response (porcine aortas). Analogical results follow also from experiments on other structures (skin, bones).

Kunming area is adjacent to Dianchi Lake. Peat soil with high water content and high compressibility is widely distributed, rheological properties is one of the most important engineering properties of peat soil. However, compared with the peat soils in the other areas, the peat soil in Kunming area has different properties. This paper studied rheological properties of peat soil in Kunming area by using the creep test of loading and unloading, on the basis of the strain-time curves, parting linear visco-elasticity, linear visco-plasticity and nonlinear visco-plasticity from the total deformation. Research shows that: ①The deformation is mostly composed of unrecoverable deformation and there is instantaneous elastic strain, instantaneous plastic strain in total strain; ②In low stress level, the soil is rendered as visco-elasticity. However, when the stress level is high, the performance of soil is visco-plasticity; ③By stress-strain curve clusters, yield stress of peat soil is approximate to 3.6 kPa in Kunming; ④Along with the time, modulus of linear visco-elasticity tended to be stable.

Resumen
AbstractIn this work, we study theoretically the thickness of a liquid film (typically made of a surfactant solution) pulled out of a bath at constant speed in the absence of gravity, when it features a viscous or an elastic interfacial rheology. We show that a purely viscous rheology does not lead to the extraction of a steady state film of constant thickness. In contrast, the thickness of the film is well defined in the elastic case, which allows us to compute it. This thickness depends on the capillary number of the experiment, and on the elasticity of the interface. It is always lower than or equal to that obtained for an incompressible interface predicted by Frankel (Mysels, Shinoda and Frankel, Soap Films: Studies of their Thinning and a Bibliography, 1959), which is recovered in the limit of an arbitrary large elasticity.

The purpose of this work was to investigate the effects of pre-load static load and dynamic load on the visco-elastic in polycarbonate. In the paper, static-dynamic sweep experiment of polycarbonate was performed on EPLEXOR 500N, which was manufactured by GABO of Germany. The variation laws of storage modulus, loss modulus and loss tangent as changing dynamic load in a large range were systematically analyzed and the spectral characteristics of dynamic-viscoelastic under static-dynamic loads were obtained. The experiment results on dynamic visco-elastic under the high load shows that the load effects on dynamic visco-elasticity of polycarbonate performing on the changing of the dynamic visco-elastic parameters, storage modulus become lager with the increasing of static load and decreasing with the increasing of dynamic load, while loss tangent decreases with the increasing of dynamic load and varies in a more complicated pattern as the increasing of static load.

Resumen
The friction characteristic of paper-based friction materials is one of the most important factors that influence the shifting performance of oil immersed clutches in automobile automatic transmissions. Visco-elasticity and porosity of the material are considered to be important properties that may control the friction characteristics of the material. In this study, the relationship between the friction characteristics and the visco-elasticity of a paper-based friction material is discussed. In order to vary the visco-elasticity while retaining the ingredients almost constant in a paper-based friction material, the formulation of the sample materials required changing the compression rate during the clutch plate bonding process and changing the volume percentage of resin. The properties of the sample materials such as porosity (pore diameter, pore diameter distribution, porosity percentage), and visco-elastic deformation in the compressive and the shearing directions, etc. were measured. In order to clarify the relationship between the friction and visco-elasticity of friction material, friction characteristics were measured. Friction characteristics of the sample materials were evaluated by a breaking-away test and continuous slip tests with a newly designed friction testing machine. From the experimental results, which showed that the lower the longitudinal modulus of the friction material, the higher the friction coefficient, it was found that friction characteristics of oil immersed paper-based friction materials are influenced by the visco-elasticity.

Resumen
The traffic speed deflectometer (TSD) has proven a valuable tool for network level structural evaluation. At the project level, however, the use of TSD data is still quite limited. An obstacle to the use of TSD at the project level is that the standard approaches to back-calculation of pavement properties are based on the falling weight deflectometer (FWD). The FWD experiment is similar, but not equivalent, to the TSD experiment, and therefore it is not straightforward to apply the traditional FWD back-calculation procedures to TSD data. In this paper, a TSD-specific back-calculation procedure is presented. The procedure is based on a layered linear visco-elastic pavement model and takes the driving speed of the vehicle into account. This is in contrast to most existing back-calculation procedures, which treat the problem as static and the pavement as purely elastic. The developed back-calculation procedure is tested on both simulated and real TSD data. The real TSD measurements exhibit significant effects of damping and visco-elasticity. The back-calculation algorithm is able to capture these effects and yields model fits in excellent agreement with the measured values.

Resumen
An analysis is made on a steady flow of an incompressible visco-elastic fluid (of small memory) past a porous plate subject to uniform suction or blowing. The fluid and the plate rotate in unison with uniform angular velocity about an axis perpendicular to the plate. It is shown that for a visco-elastic fluid of small memory, a boundary layer is formed for uniform suction or blowing at the plate. It is found that the primary velocity increases whereas the secondary velocity increases near the plate and decreases away from the plate with an increase in the elastic parameter. The secondary flow shows flow reversal for a large elastic parameter. It is found that both primary and secondary velocities increase near the plate and decrease away from the plate with an increase in the rotation parameter. It is also found that the shear stress due to primary flow increases with an increase in either the elastic parameter or rotation parameter. On the other hand, the shear stress due to secondary flow decreases with an increase in the elastic parameter while it increases with an increase in the rotation parameter. The temperature distribution in the boundary layer is also determined. It is shown that elasticity leads to an increase in heat transfer at the plate.

Resumen
PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to show how to find the regions of dynamic instability of a beam axially loaded and visco‐elastically constrained at its ends by Kelvin‐Voigt translational and rotational units variously arranged according to different configurations, by using the equation of boundary frequencies.Design/methodology/approachWith respect to visco‐elasticity the time variable is present as a parameter so that the above‐mentioned exact approach is exploited to draw three‐dimensional diagrams of the dynamic component of the periodic load and its frequency, varying with time and with the viscosity parameter μ characterizing the restraints.FindingsFor not rigidly constrained configurations a peculiar asymptotic tendency is recognizable in both cases.Research limitations/implicationsThe study allows for identifying the influence of visco‐elastic restraints in the response of a beam under a dynamic axial load. Dynamic excitation occurs in several fields of mechanics: dynamic loads are encountered in structural systems subjected to seismic action, aircraft structures under the load of a turbulent flow and industrial machines whose components transmit time‐dependant forces.Practical implicationsVisco‐elasticity accounts for possible vibration control solutions planned to improve the dynamic response of the rod; they can consist of layers of visco‐elastic material within the body of the modelled element or local viscous instruments affecting the boundary conditions; the latter is the application this paper focuses on.Originality/valueWith this paper a calculation procedure to get an exact solution for particular static configurations of the beam is followed in order to define the influence of visco‐elastic restraints under a dynamic axial load; the responses are given in terms of boundary frequencies domains and are supposed to be useful to learn the behaviour in time and in dependence of the intrinsic viscosity of the restraints.

Resumen
Abstract The thermal instability of a layer of Rivlin-Ericksen elastico-viscous fluid acted on by a uniform rotation is considered. For stationary convection, a Rivlin-Ericksen elastico-viscous fluid behaves like a Newtonian fluid. It is found that rotation has a stabilizing effect and introduces oscillatory modes in the system. The visco-elasticity also introduces oscillatory modes in the system. A suffi-cient condition for the non-existence of overstability is also obtained.

Resumen
The dynamic properties of materials should be analyzed for the material selection and safety design of robots used in the army and other protective structural applications. Split Hopkinson pressure bars (SHPB) is a widely used system for measuring the dynamic behavior of materials between 102 and 104 s−1 strain rates. In order to obtain accurate dynamic parameters of materials, the influences of friction and inertia should be considered in the SHPB tests. In this study, the effects of the friction conditions, specimen shape, and specimen configuration on the SHPB results are numerically investigated for rate-independent material, rate-dependent elastic-plastic material, and rate-dependent visco-elastic material. High-strength steel DP500 and polymethylmethacrylate are the representative materials for the latter two materials. The rate-independent material used the same elastic modulus and hardening modulus as the rate-dependent visco-elastic material but without strain rate effects for comparison. The impact velocities were 3 and 10 m/s. The results show that friction and inertia can produce a significant increase in the flow stress, and their effects are affected by impact velocities. Rate-dependent visco-elasticity material specimen is the most sensitive material to friction and inertia effects among these three materials (rate-independent material, rate-dependent elastic-plastic material, and rate-dependent visco-elastic material). A theoretical analysis based on the conservation of energy is conducted to quantitatively analyze the relationship between the stress measured in the specimen and friction as well as inertia effects. Furthermore, the methods to reduce the influence of friction and inertia effects on the experimental results are further analyzed.

Resumen
In this paper, the response of a bounded one-dimensional medium (strip) subjected to a thermal shock is investigated. The strip is made of a linear visco-elastic material, of which the time-dependency of the elastic modulus is described by the simple Kelvin–Voigt model. To obtain the displacement, stress and temperature within the strip, the Lord and Shulman theory of generalized thermo-elasticity containing a single relaxation time is used. Three coupled equations, namely, the equation of motion, the modified Fourier law and the second law of thermodynamics, are established in terms of the displacement, temperature and heat flux. It is worth noting that the second law of thermodynamics is not linearized and is kept in the nonlinear form. The equations derived are first represented in a dimensionless presentation. Then, they are discretized using the well-known generalized differential quadrature. To obtain the response of the strip in time, the Newmark time marching scheme is implemented. It should be mentioned that due to the nonlinear nature of the governing equations, the successive Picard algorithm is used. The results of the present study are compared with those available in the literature for an elastic strip. Besides, numerical results are given for a strip made of Kelvin–Voigt visco-elastic material. The effects of visco-elastic parameter, coupling parameter, thermal relaxation time and nonlinearity are discussed in numerical examples.

Resumen
A model for the motion of a compressible elastic-viscous-plastic fluid in a round pipe is proposed. The main indicators of the flow, volume flow and speed are obtained. Numerous hydrodynamic processes are associated with the properties of liquids. It is known that the mechanical and physical properties of liquids can be described by various models. Various models have been proposed that partially describe the processes of hydromechanics. The proposed model makes it possible to qualitatively describe the deformation processes that occur in various systems. To describe a closed theory of motion of a continuous medium and, in particular, between stress and strain, it is necessary to have a mechanical model. From the literature analysis it is known that there are simple models, which include elastic, viscous and plastic. At the same time, it should be noted that the mechanical model partially shows the mechanical state of the elastic body in the form of Hooke's law. Practice shows that there are more complex liquids that do not obey this law. One of these fluids is an elastic-viscous-plastic fluid. In this work, a model is proposed that describes the elastic-viscous-plastic properties of liquids, which sequentially connects the elastic and viscous-plastic elements. For such a medium, the total resistance will be the sum of the stress corresponding to the elastic deformation and the stress caused by the viscous-plastic resistance. Based on the proposed model, an equation is obtained taking into account the coefficient of volumetric elastic expansion, and an equation is obtained for determining the velocity distribution over the pipe section and volume flow for a given liquid. Calculations have shown that with an increase in compressibility, the flow rate of the liquid partially increases, which in some practical cases produces a positive effect.

Resumen
This paper reports on a study of the propagation characteristics of visco-elastic, Rayleigh waves induced by laser ultrasonics in half space structures. Beginning with the Kelvin model, the characterization equation and the normal displacement of visco-elastic Rayleigh waves in are derived and the influence of the visco-elastic modulus on dispersion and attenuation are discussed. The transient response of a visco-elastic Rayleigh wave is also simulated by means of Laplace and Hankel inversion transforms. The papers results and conclusions will provide insights and guidance for estimating visco-elastic parameters

Resumen
The short time and cyclic behavior of filled rubbers used in vibration isolation in the frequency range 10−2 to 102 rad/s is examined. A form of the free-energy function consistent with the assumption of an additive stress decomposition is employed. A constitutive law for the inelastic part of the stress is provided, in the form of an integro-differential equation, which involves the fractional order derivative of the internal variable. It is assumed that the volumetric response of the material is elastic. The elasticity of rubber is modeled following classical models (e.g., Rivlin, Ogden), extended to include compressibility. Step-by-step integration of the constitutive law is performed. Simple shear experiments are used to assess the capability of the model to capture essential response characteristics, such as stiffness reduction under cyclic loading of increasing amplitude and the variation of dissipated energy with amplitude and frequency.

Resumen
A mechanical actuator with a visco-elastic property is designed as an artificial muscle, and its dynamic properties are examined and compared with those of natural muscle. The properties are the length-tension relation, the tension response to sudden length change, and the load-velocity relation. The results show qualitatively good agreement with the dynamic properties of frog skeletal muscle, although the performance of the actuator must be improved. It is possible to give an actuator a visco-elasticitic property by properly combining some mechanical elements into a power source. This work is performed as the first step of the research aiming at a robotic system in which a compliant control is completed by controlling the visco-elasticity of the actuator itself.
