Intimate partner violence is a complex and multifaceted phenomenon. It includes physical, psychological, sexual, economic and administrative violence, and is the most common form of violence against women worldwide. Intimate partner sexual violence includes any non-consensual sexual activity within a partnership that is obtained using force, threat or coercion. Despite its detrimental effects on mental health, intimate partner sexual violence remains under-researched, limiting our ability to understand and address the problem. The main objective of this thesis is to contribute to the understanding of the sexual dimension of intimate partner violence. Three research questions are addressed: what situations of sexual victimization (types of acts, frequency) are intimate partner violence victims exposed to? What are the associated clinical characteristics among victims? And how is sexual violence experienced and interpreted when perpetrated by a partner? Methods. After performing a literature review, data from a first cross-sectional study of a sample of female victims of intimate partner violence (N=93), collected through self and third party administered questionnaires, were subjected to cluster and comparative statistical analyses. Data from a second study, collected through non-directive interviews with women who disclosed sexual violence by their partner (N=7), were the subject of an interpretative phenomenological analysis. The results of the quantitative study indicate that 65.6% of the women in the sample had experienced intimate partner sexual violence. Four clusters were identified, corresponding to different contexts: « highly frequent rapes » (5.4%), « predominant sexual coercion » (20.4%), « medium frequency of all forms » (20.4%), and « low frequency of all forms » (19.4%). This study highlights the significant heterogeneity of sexual violence situations within violent relationships, and the tendency of sexually victimized women to suffer from more pronounced symptoms of complex post-traumatic stress disorder. The qualitative study identified five key themes in the lived experience of victims: the impact of a pre-existing sexual dynamic on sexual violence, which helps to « set the stage »; an experience of dehumanization; the pain of an intense cognitive load, associated with trying to understand the aggressions; a process of retrospective reinterpretation of sexual violence, after separation; and the feeling of a psychological impact that is still present despite the separation. This study reveals how emotional distress and cognitive uncertainty are present prior to sexual violence, during sexual violence, and continue after separation. It also shows how victims interpret it in terms of their own vulnerability, at the intersection of traumatic childhood history and insecure attachment This work contributes to improving knowledge about a sensitive and poorly understood topic. The implications for prevention, training of professionals, detection and psychotherapy are discussed. More research is needed to move toward a comprehensive approach that integrates the multiple dimensions and complexities of intimate partner violence
Delaunay, Marine. "Les violences entre partenaires intimes : de l’indignation politique et morale aux pratiques routinières des institutions pénales : une comparaison entre la France et la Suède". Thesis, Bordeaux, 2019. http://www.theses.fr/2019BORD0329.
This thesis aims to understand the gap between the political and moral indignation related to intimate partner violence in France and the routines of their treatment by the criminal justice system. The main hypothesis argues that the mobilization of gender issues would tend to increase the political dimension of the judicial work. The comparative methodology sheds light on the social and legal frames from which violence is defined and the causes are interpreted. In France, the intimacy of the relationship between partners operates as a standard that automatically triggers the implementation of an aggravating circumstance. In Sweden, this violence consists of a specific offence that considers the gendered distribution of the roles of victim and perpetrator. What is the influence of these frames on the institutional treatment of intimate partner violence? Based on more than a hundred interviews and some observations, the thesis documents how the professionals’ practices (investigators, forensic doctors, prosecutors, judges and social workers) line up to produce criminal qualifications, regulate the cases flows and sanction them. The thesis highlights the socio-organizational constraints, the normative rules and their flexibility regarding the process of these social activities. Finally, it questions the representations that professionals attach to their practices and the meanings perpetrators associate to the criminal sanction. Finally, the meeting of the frames, the practices and the subjectivities moderate the political dimension of violence in France, while in Sweden violence is continually politicized, with a certain number of blind spots, though
Lochon, Annie. "L'évolution de la réaction sociale aux violences et crimes sexuels entre 1989 et 2012 dans la presse française". Thesis, Normandie, 2019. http://www.theses.fr/2019NORMC018.
Based on the analysis of 1472 articles in two French newspapers on violence and sexual delinquency, carried out using the software Prospero, this thesis highlights the mechanisms of crime presentation already known within a newspaper: the place of miscellaneous facts, the dramatization, the antagonistic presentation of perpetrators and victims. Still, this kind of processing can nourish a biased social representation of sexual offences, lead to insecurity and to populist criminal policies. Between 1989 and 2012, the way these crimes and offences were named, changed from "sexual abuse", the first expression used at the beginning of the period, followed by that of "sex offender", before the expressions "sexual violence" and finally "gender and sexual violence" became the two most popular expressions used. This succession of expressions appears as one of the signs of the evolution of the social reaction towards its violence and offences. These last two generalized expressions confirm the presence of a continuum in the way we think about various forms of sexual violence. However, the dichotomy between the representations of perpetrators and victims of sexual violence prevents us from taking this public problem under serious consideration

This dissertation focuses on the construction of “street harassment” as a new public problem in France during the 2010s. It relies on a variety of materials such as observations, interviews, and documentary and press analysis, as well as a multi-sited survey investigating media, feminist activists, national and local public policies, and police forces. On one hand, this research sheds light on the roles played by each of these spaces and actors to the process of construction of the public problem. On the other hand, it questions the extent to which the interactions and power relations between them participate in understanding the specificities of this problem. It addresses the process through which an issue that is defined as gendered is also framed as a spatialized, racialized and security problem. Eventually, this thesis shows that despite the swift development of the issue and its rapid penalisation with the creation of a new offense entitled “sexist insult” (“outrage sexiste”) the construction of the problem remains incomplete and precarious

Le plain-chant des narrations ethnophotographiques et du hors texte de 13 survivantes du peuple guéré à DUEKOUÉ en contre-configuration". The accounts of thirteen survivors of rapes suffered in Duékoué, a crossroads city located in the west of Côte d'Ivoire, during the failed coup d'état of September 19, 2002 until the postelectoral crisis of 2010, constitute the narrative matrix of this thesis. These 13 women are survivors, with the astonishment, the anguish, the despair of the survivors. Where can we still find meaning when we have lived what they have lived and are still living ten years later? Indeed, the survivors continue to live in a permanent hell, victims of slow forms of invisible violence, a subtle form of social assassination through the brutal exclusion from family and community, through the predominantly patriarchal and of a disrespectful reparation; collateral consequences little or not documented or even denied. This thesis tries to propose answers to three essential questions. How to advance a research that is formally more complex than others, with a reflection on the tensions of Ivorian history, the stories of the survivors, the story of the researcher-baoulé-survivor and aesthetic proposals for writing it? How to write scientifically about vulnerability, distress and suffering and stay at a distance? How to restore the song of the actor-witnesses in the original expression, of these "tiny lives", with the choppy, stammering speech, and make it dialogue with the vigorous and assertive speech of a researcher who actually discovers during a particular day that he is in search of his own word, that of a survivor, buried in a padlocked gangue. It was necessary to be able to render the adhesion of the baoulé researcher to his own word and in his faith in the capacities of language to reach the untouchable and the invisible, a lost world, the past itself. It was necessary to try to multiply the narrative detours and the formal tracks, and to take the risk of rejecting certain narrative university codes in order to make palpable, by transforming a material that is difficult to handle and highly flammable, this violence experienced by the survivors of whom Michel Foucault says: "that what is most dangerous in violence is its rationality”. It is also for this reason, to make the distant waves of this suffering expressed more particularly felt and the certainty that we often overlook, that the choice of photoethnographic narrations was imposed. To confront each of the readers with their own relationship to the image and, in a more subtle way, to the stories of the survivors. Which then leads us to reflect on the enigma of appearances. “Read what has never been written”. To see violence in its truth, only an anthropology of attention that would resonate with what Edouard Glissant calls "the deep", thus designating "what there is really, concretely, below the appearance », making it possible to resuscitate the dignity of life of the survivors and to legitimize the writing of a committed researcher
