L’entretien sociologique organise les formes de l’expression identitaire, en plaçant l’enquêté narrant son histoire face à un interlocuteur qui occupe une position de tiers significatif. À l’appui d’entretiens réalisés auprès de femmes âgées de plus de cinquante ans, cet article questionne le statut de la parole recueillie en sondant les modalités de l’identification et de la reconnaissance de soi dans le cadre contraignant du protocole sociologique. Il met en évidence la complexité des discours, soumis aux normes temporelles socialement admises, mais aussi informés par une mémoire sélective et par le corps qui, à son tour, saisit le vif de l’identité. S’identifier revient à désigner, avec gêne ou aisance, les accomplissements de sa vie, en conformité ou non avec les injonctions sociales. Le récit produit une image identitaire instable, d’un soi à temporalité variable, défiant le sociologue dans sa pratique interprétative.

Abstract: This article makes a case for "reading sound" in archives, oral histories, and written testimonies and models the process via a reflexive engagement with the author's own research. Drawing on examples from French colonial archives in the Archives Nationales d'Outre Mer and the Service Historique de la Defense, it discusses how to make sounded references meaningful, ways to think about finding patterns across sound events, and why scholars might bother. Paying attention to the sonic, as well as to broader sensory and aesthetic events in the historical records, offers an inroad by which to adopt an "anarchival sensibility". This move opens space to think history differently, putting embodied experiences and norms, and the modalities of perception and knowledge production that constitute those experiences, at the forefront of scholarly knowledge production. As such, a sonic rereading of the archive offers one route by which to decolonize the historiography of the Algerian War of Independence and the era of French colonization more broadly. Abstract: Cet article plaide en faveur de la « lecture sonore » dans les archives, les histoires orales et les témoignages écrits et modélise les processus par un engagement réflexif à partir des recherches de l'auteure. S'appuyant sur des exemples tirés des archives coloniales françaises des Archives d'Outre-Mer et du Service Historique de la Défense, il explique comment donner du sens aux références sonores, comment réfléchir à la recherche des modèles à travers des événements sonores et pourquoi les chercheurs pourraient s'en soucier. Prêter attention aux sons, ainsi qu'aux événements sensoriels et esthétiques plus larges dans les documents historiques, offre une ouverture permettant l'adoption d'une « sensibilité anarchivique ». Cette évolution donne l'occasion de penser l'histoire différemment, en plaçant les expériences et les normes incarnées, ainsi que les modalités de perception et de production des connaissances que constituent ces expériences, au premier plan de la production des connaissances scientifiques. Et tant que telle, une relecture sonore des archives offre une voie pour décoloniser l'historiographie de la guerre d'indépendance algérienne et, plus largement, de l'ère de la colonisation française.

La souffrance des personnes en fin de vie, et de leur famille, n’est pas modulée seulement par la perspective qu’ils ont de la mort, plutôt difficile à imaginer, mais aussi par le bilan qu’ils font de leur « histoire de vie ». Ce bilan s’élabore selon une représentation complexe de la situation (à la fois individuelle, familiale et sociale), et qui est en particulier fortement tributaire des normes, des règles et des loyautés sous-tendant l’éthique de la famille de celui qui va mourir. Suivant les circonstances et en fonction de la manière dont, dès le début, le patient et ses proches se sont aménagés par rapport aux limites, il faudra reprendre avec eux les différentes étapes du processus de deuil ( « mourning » ) qui est à l’oeuvre tout au long de la vie, et plus précisément aux moments charnières ou de crise.

RésuméDans quelle mesure les savants ont-ils utilisé les sciences pour poursuivre une bonne vie au XVIIesiècle? Comment articuler révolution scientifique et questionnement éthique? Ce sont les questions que formule l’historien des sciences Matthew Jones dans son ouvrageThe good life in the scientific revolution. Son projet s’inscrit d’abord dans les prolongements des recherches sur une histoire sociale de la vérité qui a encouragé de nombreux historiens depuis deux décennies à déchiffrer les normes morales qui garantissent l’usage et la production des énoncés scientifiques. La civilité, la politesse, l’honneur ont donné lieu à des recherches précises qui ont permis de souligner le contexte culturel et social qui entoure les pratiques de l’innovation scientifique à l’âge classique. Ensuite, il approfondit ces interrogations en se demandant comment la pratique mathématique est considérée comme une mise en jeu, et non comme le reflet, de ces normes morales. Cet article se propose de discuter des apports de ce livre en examinant d’abord les trois formes d’expérimentation d’une morale mathématique menées par Descartes, Pascal et Leibniz. L’article montre ensuite comment Matthew Jones puise dans les travaux de Pierre Hadot sa conception des exercices mathématiques comme exercices spirituels. Dans un troisième temps, l’article étudie dans quelle mesure le livre illustre un retour de la question morale en histoire des sciences anglophone depuis une vingtaine d’années alors que l’épistémologie classique à la française s’est toujours tenue à distance de ce questionnement. On montrera comment ces approches ouvrent des pistes de réflexion pour les historiens pour mieux saisir les relations entre sciences et religion à l’époque moderne.

El proyecto se centra en el estudio del largo camino recorrido por la mujer desde el ámbito doméstico hasta el ámbito extradoméstico o público, desde los tiempos modernos a la actualidad. Abordándose desde la transversalidad que permiten diversas disciplinas (Historia Moderna, Historia de América, Historia del Arte y Didáctica de las Ciencias Sociales), dicho trabajo permite ser analizado desde diferentes perspectivas: mujeres que, ya desde las centurias modernas, se atreven a transgredir las normas de comportamiento vigentes; que participan en acontecimientos claves de la contemporaneidad como la revolución industrial, los movimientos obreros, el activismo político; que adquieren relevancia en el mecenazgo artístico o que, en calidad de pintoras y escultoras, convierten el arte en su profesión; así como mujeres que van asumiendo un creciente protagonismo en la educación, en la instrucción de algunas disciplinas o en la evolución de los Derechos Humanos.

With the significant growth of the meal kit market, environmental pollution problems caused by meal kit packaging materials are also emerging. Meal kit companies are pressured by society to use more eco-friendly packaging materials. However, doing so would only increase the production costs and sales prices, if consumers turn a blind eye to it. Therefore, for meal kit companies, it is necessary to understand the antecedents to consumers' eco-friendly behavior intentions and react accordingly. For this reason, this study used the VBN model to examine the decision-making process of meal kit consumers that leads from value beliefs and personal norms to eco-friendly behavioral intentions. In addition, the mediating roles of emotional factors (predicted guilt and pride) in the process were considered. To address the research objectives, a survey was conducted amongst adult men and women who purchased meal kits and plan to purchase them in the future. A total of 300 responses were collected from July 11 to 13, 2023. Among them, 249 (83.0%) suitable responses were analyzed. Descriptive statistics analysis and structural equation modeling analysis were performed using SPSS and AMOS programs. The analysis results are as follows. First, the values of meal kit consumers had significant effects on outcome perception, responsibility attribution, individual norms, and purchase intentions. Second, there were significant mediating effects of anticipated guilt and pride in the relationship between personal norms and the intentions to purchase eco-friendly meal kits. The analysis results emphasized the importance of values, beliefs, personal norms, and anticipated emotions in strengthening the eco-friendly behavioral intentions of meal kit consumers. It is suggested that meal kit companies should invest in monitoring and managing consumers' ecological values, personal norms, and emotional factors at the marketing level.

The last two decades have seen an unprecedented proliferation of ethnographies of policing in many parts of the world. Implicit in the body of this new work is the continuation of an old and perhaps irresolvable debate on what policing is: the extralegal subjugation of subordinate populations or an agency whose authority is highly restricted by the norms of civilian populations. I argue that the best way to tackle this debate is to further develop the incipient practices of global ethnography, that is, to understand local practices via their global histories.

Le renouvellement méthodologique récent en Histoire économique et sociale ouvre de nouvelles perspectives. Des problématiques inédites ainsi que de nouveaux outils d'analyse encouragent à se pencher différemment sur l'Histoire locale. L'objet de la thèse est d'appréhender la normalisation du vin sur un temps moyen, à partir des faits concrets. La norme vinicole est envisagée à travers le prisme socio-économique. Ici, le vin devient rapidement le produit structurant de l'économie héraultaise, et plus largement méditerranéenne, au cours de la seconde moitié du XIXe siècle. Le Biterrois force le trait en se tournant vers une spécialisation viti-vinicole intense. Béziers et Marseillan représentent les principales villes de ce territoire. Entre les années 1850 et le début du XXe siècle, Béziers devient une véritable capitale régionale, voire nationale dans le négoce des vins. Tous les villages du Biterrois sont orientés vers ce secteur. La très grande majorité de la société locale dépend de la production et du négoce des vins. Les acteurs sociaux produisent alors de nouvelles stratégies qu'il est nécessaire d'analyser dans une démarche à la fois quantitative et qualitative. La notion de la norme est interdépendante des évolutions politiques et législatives, des progrès techniques et des pratiques, du positionnement des acteurs sociaux et également de leurs rapports au territoire. Le contexte juridique évolue face aux grandes transformations du marché et de la circulation des produits. Le marché se transforme avec la révolution des transports. New issues and new analytical tools encourage a different look at local history. The purpose of the thesis is to understand the normalization of wine over an average time, based on concrete facts. The wine standard is viewed through the socio-economic prism. Here, wine quickly became the structuring product of the Hérault economy, and more broadly Mediterranean, during the second half of the nineteenth century. The Biterrois forces the line by turning to an intense wine specialization. Béziers and Marseillan represent the main cities of this territory. Between the 1850s and the beginning of the twentieth century, Béziers became a real regional or even national capital in the wine trade. All the villages of Biterrois are oriented towards this sector. The vast majority of local society depends on the production and trading of wines. Social actors then produce new strategies that need to be analyzed in both a quantitative and qualitative approach. The notion of norm is interdependent on political and legislative developments, technical progress and practices, the positioning of social actors and also their relationship to the territory. The legal context is changing in the face of major transformations in the market and the circulation of products. The market is changing with the transport revolution. Gradually, the standard of wines is more exposed to conditions that complicate its construction. It then becomes more vulnerable. Several hypotheses are to be considered. L’abstinence de viande doit-elle être appréhendée comme un rejet de la norme, laquelle est définie par la participation des citoyens au sacrifice sanglant animal et à la consommation des chairs qui s’ensuit, actes civico-religieux fondamentaux ? L’historiographie actuelle considère que si la vie civique se structure et se reconnaît autour de la mise à mort de l’animal et de sa consommation, alors la place des citoyens refusant la consommation de viande ne peut être que marginale. En s’appuyant sur l’ensemble des sources littéraires de la période antique (VIe siècle av. J.-C.-Ve ap. J.-C.), cette thèse, loin de confirmer cette analyse, révèle une situation plus complexe. L’abstinence de viande s’affirme en effet comme un marqueur identitaire qui laisse apparaître clairement la pluralité normative de la pratique, modulable en fonction des acteurs impliqués et/ou exclus. Ainsi, comme toute pratique alimentaire, les normes ne sont pas excluantes, et une même personne peut s’y conformer suivant le contexte dans lequel elles prennent forme. The abstinence of meat affirms itself as a marker of identity, clearly showing the normative plurality of the practice, flexible depending on the parties involved and/or excluded. In fact, as all dietary practices, norms are not excluding, and one can conform oneself to it depending on the context in which they are shaped. Thus, vegetarianism does not hinder the duties of the citizens, and does not entail marginality within the city

I den här undersökningen har lärarkommentarer i studentuppsatser under hundra år undersökts med syfte att ta reda på vad dessa kan säga om språkliga normer och deras utveckling vid Karlstads högre allmänna läroverk mellan åren 1868 och 1968. Undersökningen har begränsats till tre nedslag med femtio års mellanrum, 1868, 1918 och 1968, där lärarnas kommentarer kategoriserats efter funktion. Kategorierna har också analyserats separat med hjälp av utvalda exempel från respektive kategori. Slutligen har resultatet jämförts med tidigare forskning om elevspråk i studentuppsatser. Resultatet visar dels på att elevernas skriftliga språknorm framför allt under 1900-talets senare hälft blivit enklare och mer talspråklig, och att lärare alltid i viss mån har velat motverka eller bromsa den utvecklingen, men dels också på lärarens språkmakt och tolkningsföreträde i att bedöma vad som är rätt och fel. Det visar också att lärarnas språkvårdande funktion varit stark under hela undersökningsperioden.In this study, teacher comments in student essays have been examined with the aim of finding out what these can say about linguistic norms and their development at Karlstad's secondary upper school between 1868 and 1968. The study is limited to years at fifty-year intervals, 1868, 1918 and 1968, in which the teachers' comments were categorized by function. The categories have also been analyzed separately using examples from each category. Finally, the result has been compared with previous research on student language in student essays. The result shows that the norm of students' written language, especially during the latter half of the 20th century, is less complex and closer to colloquial language, and that teachers to some degree always have wanted to slow down this development. However it also shows the teacher's language power in assessing what is right and wrong. Furthermore, the study shows that the teachers' language cultivational function has remained strong throughout the investigation period.

Grâce à ses capacités dispersives et adaptatives, la truite commune (Salmo trutta L.), poisson anadrome facultatif, est un bon candidat à la colonisation de nouveaux milieux. L'introduction de l'espèce dans les années 1950 dans les îles subantarctiques de Kerguelen fournit un modèle d'étude unique pour comprendre les causes et les mécanismes de la dispersion, grâce à l'étude des traits d'histoire de vie en lien avec la migration (e.g. croissance, âge à la migration). L'étude de leur évolution temporelle le long d'un front de colonisation est le cœur de ce travail de thèse. A travers l’étude des écailles recueillies dans le cadre de ce programme à long terme, les histoires de vie de près de 5000 poissons ont été reconstruites. Ce travail démontre l’importance de la méthodologie utilisée afin de reconstruire les traits de vie individuel. La modélisation de l’évolution de la croissance en eau douce, de la taille à l’âge et de l’âge à la première migration démontre que des processus évolutifs sont en œuvre dans les populations en expansion. Notamment, le ralentissement de la croissance avec le temps ainsi que la diminution de la taille à l’âge le long du front de colonisation laissent à penser que la capacité de dispersion diminue à mesure que les populations sont en marges de la zone d’expansion. The sub Antarctic Kerguelen Islands are a perfect model to model population dynamics in an invasion context, because it represents a simplified case of invasion by brown trout (Salmo trutta L.), a facultative anadromous fish. Introduced in the 1950s, and thanks to its dispersive and adaptive capacities, the brown trout provides a unique study model for understanding the causes and mechanisms underlying biological invasions. Understanding dispersal mechanisms, through the study of life history traits related to migration (e.g. growth, age at migration) and their temporal evolution in shifting expansion range population, is the core of this thesis work. Through the study of scales collected in this unique framework, the life histories of nearly 5000 fish have been rebuilt. This work demonstrates the importance of the methodology to determine accurate estimates of individual life history traits. Modelling the evolution of freshwater growth, body size at age and age at first migration demonstrates that evolutionary processes are at work according to the time since colonization. In particular, the decrease in growth rate over time and the decrease in body size at age over time and space suggest that the dispersal capacity is decreasing in populations located at the margins. The evolution of the threshold size at first migration confirms this results, and illustrates the importance of phenotypic plasticity and local adaptation in the choice of migratory tactics. Text in AfrikaansThe actuality of the pedagogical question concerning the role of ideology, values and norms in the life of man in general and education specifically stimulated the interest of the author and prompted her to examine the past in this respect. The contemporary image of ideology, values, norms, personal and global philosophies are looked at in this study. Particular attention is paid to the ideologies that developed from the Renaissance e.g. Humanistic oriented Realism, Rationalism and Naturalism. Certain role players are briefly referred to. The Communist Educational System influenced more than half of the human race over a period of seventy years resulting in a thorough investigation into this system. The influence of People's Education in education in general was also scrutinized. Because so many South Africans are adherents of Calvinism it was important that attention was paid to: The philosophy of Calvinism; What it entails; How it originated and its impact on South African Education. Particular reference was made to the role of Christian National Education. It is fairly generally accepted that a new period in history of the West in relation to values, norms and education is being entered into. The period discussion is more concerned with spiritual development, culture knowledge and religion of the human race than political and military power, although, the latter is not excluded. It was also necessary to take note of the influence of the New Age movement on values and norms. The study is concluded with the evaluation of ideology, values, norms, personal and global philosophies. Some of the most important conclusions arrived at are that these aspects are interwoven and that education is pertinently influenced by the values, norms, culture, personal and global philosophies of the individual, community and government.

AbstractDuring the strict COVID restrictions in 2020, the ‘Critical Theory, Education and Social Work Reading Group’ based at the University of Sydney met via Zoom to discuss Raewyn Connell’s The good university (2019). The crisis faced by higher education institutions—set against broader social and political crises triggered by the pandemic—was the palpable backdrop for discussions. Drawing on examples offered by pioneering universities and educational reformers around the world, Connell outlines a vision for making universities more engaging and more productive places, driven by social good rather than profit, and helping to build fairer societies.Connell’s book generated a rich stream of reflections and responses, especially from postgraduate students who are in a liminal space in the global higher education industry. They are often both students and precariously employed staff; both visible as sources of income for universities and invisible as its workers; both already within the university system and uncertain if they will remain.In this chapter, three (former) postgraduates of the reading group—Meenakshi Krishnaraj, Ren-Hao Leo Xu, and Pat Norman—engage with Connell on university teaching, research, and professional work, respectively. Each in their own way raises the question: How can we reimagine ‘the good university’?

Dans cet article, nous tenterons d’une part une synthèse, très partielle, des pratiques de ces annonces au cours des XVIIIe-XXe siècles pour aborder dans une dernière partie les manières actuelles de passer de l’intime au « public » au travers d’une enquête récente menée en France. The Harlech series is compared favourably with those norms. The latter are critiqued as embodying the bourgeois conception of history via such recurrent tropes as the centrality of the individual, the uniqueness of historical events, and a commitment to linear conceptions and representations, televisual or otherwise, of history.

This chapter focuses on several attempts to mobilize sound-politics via a range of techniques, devices, and national and international standards. I consider how experts have managed to stabilize two central actors: ears and norms. In the early twentieth century, experts generated the “average normal ear,” which I call Ear 1.0, the first actor. The second actor is the sound level meter, the Ear 2.0, a black box responsible for emulating Ear 1.0 and conveying reliable quantified information. As other authors have already traced the fascinating history of the stabilization of Ears 1.0 and 2.0 in the early twentieth century, I simply summarize some of these debates. The second section focuses on the Brazilian Technical Standards Association (ABNT). In the 2010s, experts faced the daunting task of revising two technical standards for assessing environmental noise. As I show, drawing on participant observation, interviews, and minutes of meetings between 2011 and 2017, this task was difficult because these revisions involved the input of groups with different interests and different understandings of what a technical standard should do.

This chapter discusses the nature and development of historical knowledge and understanding in Victorian Britain. It describes the pervasive tendencies within the period as a whole with respect to what needed to be taught and learned. Historians preserved an eighteenth-century tradition throughout the 1820s — the parliamentary history and Catholic vision of English history from the Romans to the Glorious Revolution. Narratives concentrated on the Norman conquest, Magna Carta, the reign of Henry VII, the seventeenth-century constitution, the English Civil War and the apotheosis of whiggery in the eighteenth century. Later versions faltered in face of the need to demonstrate deeper knowledge of events and a denser narrative texture. Thereafter, histories of England, written in the grand manner and across many centuries, petered out until after the turn of the century, and prompted treatments of more modern periods.

Abstract When the AIDS epidemic drew national attention in the United States, the dominant (though by no means exclusive) scientific response mirrored the “normal science” (Kuhn, 1970) paradigm of the time. Within psychology, the paradigm was reflected in what Sarason (1981) called the “acultural, asocial, and ahistorical” study of the individual. Epistemologically, it reflected the positivistic tradition characteristic of the history of psychology. This focus and epistemology has had its successes, and much is now known about how individually based interventions can be crafted to affect individual attitudes and self-reported sexual risk behaviors (Valdiserri, Ogden, & McCray, 2003; van Empelen, Kok, van Kesteren, van den Borne, Bos, & Schaalma, 2003).

Two patients with a new type of combined factor V and factor Vm deficiency is described. The propositus was 41 year-old woman who had never experienced any bleeding episode. We considered that this case was to be one of the combined factor V/Vin deficiency from the results of prolonged prothrombin time, 23.5 sec. (control 12.6 sec.) and kaolin partial thromboplastin time, 58.9 sec. (control 39.2 sec.) before surgery because of the right postoperative maxillary cyst. Coagulation studies at the time showed that the mean F. V and F. Vm levels were 11.5 % and 27 %, respectively. Von willebrand factor (vWF) which is the biological activity of F. VIII related platelet adhesion and vWF:Ag were also decreased (vWF:Ag 34 %, vwF 36.5 %). Bleeding time, platelet aggregation induced by ADP, collagen and ristocetin were normal. Another coagulation factors were normal and pathological inhibitors were not detected. The antigen levels of protein C (PC) and protein S (PS) were found to be normal. Her younger brother, who had no*past history of spontaneous bleeding, was found to be same abnormality (F. V 13 %, F. VIE 38 %, vwF:Ag 64 %, vWF 58 %). Bleeding time, platelet aggregation, another coagulation factors, PC and PS were normal. Furthermore, decreased intermediate multimers of vWF:Ag in these cases were observed on two-dimensional crossed immunoelectrophoresis.Since first case described by Oeri et al in 1954, approximately 40 combined factor V/Vm deficiency have been reported. In most such cases, vWF:Ag, vwF levels, and the electrophoretic mobility were within the normal range. In our cases, vwF:Ag and vwF were apparently decreased, and appeared to be the same abnormality as the von willebrand disease type-I. From the above mentioned findings, these patients were thought to be a new disorder of combined F. V deficiency and molecular abnormality of F. VIE ( vWF:Ag).

Abstract Particle swarm optimization (PSO) method is a well-known optimization algorithm, which shows good performance in solving different optimization problems. However, PSO usually suffers from slow convergence. In this paper, a reinforcement learning method is used to enhance PSO in convergence by replacing the uniformly distributed random number in the updating function by a random number generated from a well-selected normal distribution. The mean and variance of the normal distribution are estimated from the current state of each individual through a policy net. The historic behavior of the swarm group is learned to update the policy net and guide the selection of parameters of the normal distribution. The proposed algorithm is tested with numerical test functions and the results show that the convergence rate of PSO can be improved with the proposed Reinforcement Learning method (RL-PSO).

This paper presents an automated algorithm for design of vehicle structures for crashworthiness, based on the analyses of the structural crash mode. The crash mode (CM) is the history of the deformation of the different zones of the vehicle structure during a crash event. The algorithm emulates a process called crash mode matching where structural crashworthiness is improved by manually modifying the design until its crash mode matches the one the designers deem as optimal. Given an initial design and a desired crash mode, the algorithm iteratively finds new designs that have better crashworthiness performance via stochastic sampling of the design space. A new design is chosen per iteration as the best among the normally distributed samples near the current design. The mean and standard deviation of the normal distributions are adjusted in each iteration by examining the crash mode of the current design and applying a set of fuzzy logic rules that encapsulate elementary knowledge of the crash mode matching practice. Two case studies are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm. The case studies examine a front half vehicle model, as well as a fully detailed vehicle model.

This study was concerned with the effects of particle-particle collisions and two-way coupling on the dispersed and carrier phase turbulence fluctuations in a channel flow. The time history of the instantaneous turbulent velocity vector was generated by the two-way coupled direct numerical simulation (DNS) of the Navier-Stokes equation via a pseudospectral method. The particle equation of motion included the drag and the shear induced lift forces. The effect of particles on the flow was included in the analysis via a feedback force that acted on the computational grid points. Several simulations for different particle relaxation times and particle mass loadings were performed, and the effects of the inter-particle collisions and two-way coupling on the particle deposition velocity, fluid and particle fluctuating velocities, particle normal mean velocity, and particle concentration profiles were determined. It was found that, when particle-particle collisions were included in the computation but two-way coupling effects were ignored, the particle normal fluctuating velocity increased in the wall region causing an increase in the particle deposition velocity. When the particle collisions were neglected but the particle-fluid two-way coupling effects were accounted for, the particle normal fluctuating velocity decreased near the wall causing a decrease in the particle deposition velocity. For the physical case that both inter-particle collisions and two-way coupling effects are present, a series of four-way coupling simulations was performed. It was found that the particle deposition velocity increased with mass loading. The results for the particle concentration profile indicated that the inclusion of either two-way coupling or inter-particle collisions into the computation reduced the accumulation of particles near the wall. Comparisons of the present simulation results with the available experimental data and earlier numerical results were also presented.

The possession of relevant and correct information has a substantial input in the success on the battlefield. This allows making decisions with potential to result in comprehensive and successful accomplishment of the given mission, by which the security of our personnel would be high. Military intelligence, as a crucial segment in the preparation of the battle actions, requires expert personnel who by utilizing the HUMINT (Human Intelligence) skills will contribute to securing the successfulness of the mission. The communication skills represent the pillar of the successfulness of data-acquisition via interaction with people, securing full obedience of the judicial and moral norms. The research of the role of communication skills in HUMINT in the manuscript is divided in three parts. Part one defines the process of data-acquisition and presents examples in history, by which the judicial frame of interpersonal data-acquisition is established. The second part, the importance of communication and communicational skills on a daily basis, and on a professional level, are pointed out. Part three covers a research of the advocation of the communication skills in HUMINT. Chapter three points out a real scientific evidence about the necessity of communicational skills in HUMINT. The research methodology covers the analysis of expert literature and documents, deduction of the needed elements in context, synthesis of the information and conclusions, sublimating results from scholarly and expert literature, real examples from experiences in the field, and extraction of conclusions. This manuscript proves that communication skills are the most important segment which provides correct, timely and relevant information, in respect of all international judicial norms. Introduction: Chronic vulval symptoms are common complaints in women seeking health care and can significantly interfere with a woman’s sexual function and sense of well being. Many practitioners feel diagnostically challenged, particularly by chronic or recurrent forms of vulval disease. The aim of this study was to assess the role of various diagnostic modalities in evaluation of chronic vulval symptoms. Methods: Between August 2012 and February 2014, 100 women presenting with chronic vulval symptoms (i.e. ≥ 3 months duration) were evaluated. All of them had a thorough clinical history taken including use of vulval washes and creams, a general and gynaecological examination. Patients having chronic vaginal discharge in addition had urethral, vaginal and cervical smear and culture. All women had a careful examination of the vulva with and without magnification. Vulval scrape cytology was taken after moistening the vulva with normal saline and stained by Pap stain. Colposcopy of the vulva was then carried out after applying 5% acetic acid and 1% toluidine blue dye. Vulval biopsy was taken from suspicious areas on colposcopy and further management was based on histopathology report. Results: The mean age of women in our study was 43.57 years (range 22-80 years.), 70% women were pre-menopausal and 30% were post-menopausal. The mean duration of symptoms was 1.625 years (range 6 months - 15 years) and atypical vulval hygiene practices (excessive washing with soaps) was used in 77% of women. The commonest presenting complaint was pruritus in 92% of women; visible lesions on vulva were seen in 20%, pain in 6% and burning sensation in vulva in 5% of women. The histopathology was abnormal in 77 patients; the most common histopathological finding was non-neoplastic epithelial disorders in 64 women {Squamous cell hyperplasia (n=52), Lichen Sclerosus et atrophicus (n=6), other dermatoses including lichen Planus (n=6)}. Vulvar Intra-epithelial Neoplasia (VIN) was seen in 6 patients, 5 were squamous type VIN and 1 was non-squamous type (Paget’s disease). Squamous cell carcinoma was seen in 3 patients; malignant melanoma, benign appendiceal tumor, angiofibroma and neurofibroma in 1 patient. Examination without magnification had sensitivity of 25.97% and with magnification was 29.87% and specificity was 100% for both of them. Cytology had sensitivity and specificity of 75.32% and 86.95% respectively and sensitivity and specificity of colposcopy was 77.92% and 17.39% respectively. Conclusion: Clinical examination with and without magnification had low sensitivity but were highly specific in diagnosing vulvar lesions. A normal vulval smear and colposcopy have a high negative predictive value and are very reassuring. Colposcopy and biopsy is the gold standard for diagnosis, however clinical examination with naked eyes and magnifying glass are invaluable and can diagnose most of the neoplastic lesions.

Due to restricted Internal Diameter (ID) of the smaller liner, it was critical to deploy slim hole downhole tools which is fishable but still allows higher flow rate capacities with lowest pressure drops to maximize clean out efficiency. Smaller casing/liner, smaller Coiled Tubing (CT) Outer Diameter (OD), higher wellhead pressures, higher circulating pressures, smaller OD Bottomhole Assembly/s (BHA), tougher frac plugs etc. make wellbore cleanout more challenging than a newly completed well. Under normal circumstances, a 2" OD CT in a smaller casing/liner ID, should be able to provide the desired Weight on Bit (WOB) for millout, however in this case based on modelling, it was determined that an extended reach tool would be required to achieve the objective. This paper will discuss the steps incorporated to configure slim hole BHA at higher flow rates, which includes the workover motor and the extended reach tool, to successfully remove frac plugs inside refrac liner. Several dynamometer flow tests on the motors were conducted at higher than published design flow rate and post disassembly inspections were made to ensure the motor maintained full integrity and reliability at higher flow rates. The extended reach tool vendor modified the tool for higher flow rate capacity to provide maximum traction force. This tailor-made approach eliminated the need for a diverter sub, historically used in these applications to achieve higher flow rates of ~2.6 Barrels Per Minute (BPM). Excluding the diverter sub, assured no compromise to the motor's power delivery, or the traction force of the extended reach tool. By maintaining 2.6 BPM, it increased annular velocities by 30% resulting in improved solid transport for efficient clean out in three wells each with ~ 16,500 ft Measured Depth (MD). This approach has resulted in an overall time saving of 65 hours to the operator compared to previous jobs allowing to save up to $130k USD in three well pad with average wellhead pressures of 4,000 psi inside 3-1/4" 7.9 lb/ft liner.

Abstract Long-term production of gas from the Groningen field has led to subsidence and seismicity in the region. Most of the prior Groningen modeling studies assumed elastic deformation of the reservoir due to the challenges in modeling poroplasticity in a reservoir with hundreds of faults and decades of production history. Here we quantify the role of inelastic deformation in production-induced subsidence and seismicity in the field via 3D high-resolution multiphysics modeling which couples multiphase flow and elastoplastic deformation in a complex geologic system made of claystone overburden, carboniferous underburden, and the gas-bearing sandstone reservoir compartmentalized with 100+ faults. We drive the model with four decades of historical production, spanning the period of induced seismicity, and two decades of future production under gas injection-enhanced recovery. We calibrate the model using the available pressure and subsidence data and analyze compartmentalized depletion and deformation due to spatially varying production and fault distribution. We analyze stress and strain in the caprock-reservoir depth interval to elucidate the role of inelasticity. We use the evolution in shear and normal tractions on seismogenic faults that hosted 1991-2012 seismicity to quantify the evolution in Coulomb stress and geomechanical stability of the faults.

The presence of the "lupus anticoagulant" (LA) predicts a clinical syndrome of excessive arterial, venous and microvascu-lar thrombosis. LA is an antibody which reacts with negatively charged phospholipid (PL) species in vitro. Since PL is involved in many aspects of the regulation of thrombosis, we postulated that LA might modify one or more of the membrane-(PL-dependent reactions of platelets and endothelial cells (EC). Blood samples from 20 patients with a history of thrombosis were tested for the presence of LA (kaolin PTT) and titres determined. LA-positive (LA+) sera and plasma were compared to LA-negative (LA−) samples from normal donors (n=6) or patients who had lupus but no clinical thrombosis (n=4). These specimens were tested in a panel of assays. The thrombin-stimulated release of prostacyclin (PG12) from cultured human EC was markedly reduced (52%±12.5 s.e.) by preincubation of the EC with LA+ sera (30 minutes). Purified LA+ IgG from one patient reproduced this effect. Thrombin induction of EC synthesis of the procoagulant, tissue factor-which is dissociable from prostaglandin metabolism-was also inhibited by LA+ sera. Normal platelets incubated in LA+ plasma became refractory to thrombin (1 unit/ml) but retained their responsiveness to epinephrine and ADP. The reduced responsiveness to thrombin was not due to altered (specific or total) binding of thrombin. The cleavage of Factor X by Factor VII requires PL as a co-factor for the EC procoagulant, tissue factor (TF). Unlike the inhibitory effect of LA on thrombin activation of EC and platelets, this distinct membrane-(PL-) dependent function was variably enhanced by LA+ sera. Brief (20 min) exposure of EC to LA+ sera increased TF co-catalysis of Factor VII cleavage of Factor X (measured by chromogenic Xa substrate, S-2222) by up to 10 fold (p<0.05, unpaired t test). This effect was not the result of EC disruption or changes in whole-cell TF content. These data suggest multiple, complex and heterogenous effects of LA, including impaired production of PG12, impaired EC modulation, and heightened ability of endogenous EC tissue factor to initiate coagulation. These (and perhaps other) membrane-dependent effects may contribute to the tendency of LA+ patients to develop clots.

Protein S deficiency has been demonstrated in 5 members from the same family with a history of severe recurrent venous thrombosis over three generations. The propositus, a 16 year old female, had a first spontaneous thrombotic episode at age 15. Phlebography revealed a total obstruction of her left ilio-femoral vein with an extension to the vena cava. She was treated with heparin followed by oral anticoagulant therapy. The four other affected members (mother, aunts and uncle of the propositus) had also presented recurrent thrombosis with onset at a young age. The grandfather, not tested, had died from massive pulmonary embolism at age 54. The immunological assay of protein S was performed in plasma by Laurell, using a monospecific antiserum to human protein S, or by an ELISA, using a kit from Diagnostica Stago (Asserachrom Protein S). In order to separate free protein S, the functionally active form, from protein S complexed with C4-binding protein, plasma was adsorbed with 3.75 % polyethyleneglycol (PEG 6000). Following PEG precipitation, the levels of free protein S antigen remaining in the supernatant were quantitated by the usual immunological methods. In addition, two-dimensional immunoelectrophoresis (DDIE) also provided information on the distribution of both forms. In plasma protein S levels were decreased (40 to 55 % of the normal range) in two untreated patients and lower levels (17 to 20 96) were observed in the three others, including the propositus, who were under dicoumarol therapy. In PEG treated-plasma, protein S was undetectable (less than 5 %) in all patients, indicating a lack of free protein S. This was confirmed by DDIE : whereas protein S migrated as two distinct peaks, corresponding to free and complexed protein S in normal plasma, only a single peak of complexed protein S was observed in all affected patients. These results clearly demonstrate a total lack of free protein S which appears to be responsible for the thromboembolic disorder in this family as there was no deficiency of the other plasma inhibitors (antithrombin III, heparin cofactor II and protein C). According to the classification recently proposed by Comp et al., this family belongs to type I protein S deficiency, with an autosomal dominant mode of inheritance.
