Resumen
Abstract Villages are a relatively new consumer-driven model that promotes aging in place for community-dwelling seniors. Villages promote social engagement, civic engagement, member-to-member-support, and collectively bargain for services of their members. Members report improved social support and more confidence aging in their own homes. Currently, there are over 200 operational villages nationwide and the model is proliferating rapidly. Most Villages members are white, well-educated, and well resourced. Researchers at UC Berkeley conducted 6 focus groups with Latino, African American and Asian seniors (N=58) who have not joined Villages in their regions. Focus group findings describe a lack of awareness of the Village model among underrepresented groups; and barriers to membership including the cost of membership, lack of language inclusion, and lack of diversity. The national anti-immigrant discourse emerged as a barrier to membership for non-white seniors. Participants describe how Villages could make programmatic changes to attract a more diverse membership.

Resumen
Villages are a new, grassroots, consumer-directed model that aims to promote aging in place and prevent unwanted relocations for older adults. In exchange for a yearly membership fee, Villages provide seniors with opportunities for social engagement (social events and classes), civic engagement (member-to-member volunteer opportunities), and an array of support services. In total, 222 Village members were surveyed at intake and 12-month follow-up to examine changes in their confidence aging in place, social connectedness, and health. The strongest positive results were in the domain of confidence, including significantly greater confidence aging in place, perceived social support, and less intention to relocate after 1 year in the Village. As most seniors were in good health and well connected at the time they joined the Village, there were not improvements in health or social connectedness. Authors discuss the importance of longer term, longitudinal studies to examine the effectiveness of Villages in preventing institutionalization over time.

Resumen
Purpose As the “baby boomer” generation continues to enter their senior post-retirement years, the provision of affordable retirement housing has become increasingly important for the community, practitioners and policymakers. However, relatively little attention has to date been placed on identifying an effective market mechanism for the industry of the independent-living retirement villages to meet this increased and unprecedented demand. This study aims to develop an innovative and affordable retirement village development model which meets the needs of all stakeholders including seniors, retirement village residents, the retirement village industry and government. Design/methodology/approach The attributes of this study are as follows: structure of individual living units, retirement village characteristics, retirement village facilities and services and support mechanisms. The analysis was undertaken based on data relating to independent-living retirement villages in five Australian states. A hedonic pricing model was used where the price distributions relating to these four aspects were estimated. Findings The results confirmed the structures of the independent living units and the retirement village characteristics were closely related to pricing, followed by services and supports with a lesser relationship, although the facilities were not significantly related to pricing. Research limitations/implications This research is not able to address the entire retirement village market in Australia because the available market data are limited. Practical implications This research uses an innovative supply-side approach to assess retirement village attributes and values, which provides stakeholders with up-to-date market information to assist in guiding the performance of the retirement village industry. Social implications The market evaluations imply that seniors are reluctant to pay for village attributes that are not regarded as highly sought-after. A cost-effective strategy of new retirement village developments and upgrades can be further induced, which in turn can enhance the market efficiency and affordability of the retirement villages. Originality/value This pricing model for retirement village units extends previous studies into retirement villages and presents stakeholders with an innovative and reliable market-oriented model.

Resumen
AbstractRetirement villages are an increasingly popular senior housing option that aims to comprehensively integrate accommodation, care services, social activities and interaction opportunities for ageing people. The research literature about retirement villages and communities is extensive, but less studied are the contextually varying spatial, legal and political processes of how such villages and other intermediate housing-with-care solutions for older people are initially constituted, especially in novel national and local contexts. In this paper, a spatio-legal approach is employed to study the many legal possibilities and barriers that have arisen while developing retirement villages in Finland. As a specific case, I examine the new Finnish Virkkulankylä retirement village concept and its implementation process. As the key result of my study, I identify three major spatio-legal barriers to developing retirement villages and other intermediate senior housing solutions, which are (a) the polarised division between the fields of elderly care and housing in both law and practice, (b) the prevalence of ‘local law’ in spatial planning and service provision for elderly people, and (c) the inflexible funding system regarding alternative housing-with-care solutions for seniors. I argue that although the ‘in-betweenness’ of retirement villages may facilitate a more comprehensive understanding about the housing and care of older adults, in practice their intermediary position translates into many ambiguities and challenges.

Resumen
Demand for the construction of retirement villages is increasing with the worldwide growth in ageing populations. However, the development of retirement villages can be impeded by many factors, such as limited available land and high investment costs. Public–private partnership (PPP) as an alternative financing mechanism has been widely applied in the construction of public infrastructure projects and may provide new funding sources for building retirement villages. By applying PPP to the construction of retirement villages, the independent living requirements of seniors can be met and the financial difficulty of the construction of retirement villages can be resolved. Similar to other PPP projects, when retirement villages are constructed under a PPP process, the concession period is a key decision variable in relation to the success of the project. The concession period is stated in the project contract between the government and private investors, and stipulates the date when the project ownership and operation are transferred from the private investor back to the government. The government should take detailed information into consideration at the initial project stage when determining the concession period. This paper proposes PPP as a new procurement method to be applied to the construction of rental retirement villages and develops a concession period determination process for PPP retirement village projects with consideration of real options, focusing on the option to defer. An empirical example with alternative scales, which is developed from an existing retirement village in Geelong, Australia, is used to numerically verify the process and the impacts of key variables on the concession period. The determination process provides an alternative tool for governments to design the concession period before the tendering stage and will benefit the development of industries associated with services for the ageing population. This process can also be applied to the construction of other financially non-viable PPP projects such as social housing.

Resumen
As Australia's population ages, increasing numbers of seniors move to a growing number of retirement villages. Unlike time shares, which are ‘managed investment schemes’ and therefore regulated as ‘financial products’ under corporate law administered nationally by the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC), the Commonwealth withdrew from the regulation of retirement villages in the 1980s on the basis that at that time they were local, usually run by religious bodies and charities and were not of national concern. The regulation of retirement villages was taken over by the states and territories under their non-uniform Retirement Villages Acts and the common law. Until then retirement villages, often indistinguishable from Commonwealth regulated timeshares, were regulated in the original State and Territory Uniform Companies Acts in 1961 as ‘interests’, and then in later Commonwealth legislation as ‘prescribed interests’ by the forebear of ASIC, the then National Companies and Securities Commission (NCSC) with the State and Territory Corporate Affairs Commissions as its ‘delegates’. Today retirement villages, which are largely owned and managed by the corporate sector, raise many issues of national concern such as accountability, fees and the rights of residents. Some aspects of retirement villages such as directors’ duties, fundraising, prospectuses and unregistered schemes are regulated as corporations by ASIC under the Corporations Act 2001 (Cth), but retirement villages are not regulated as ‘financial products’ under corporate law. This article challenges the effectiveness of state and territory regulation of retirement villages and calls for federal regulation of retirement villages by bringing retirement villages into the definition of ‘financial product’ in the Corporations Act 2001 (Cth) and in the Australian Securities and Investments Commission Act 2001 (Cth). As financial products, retirement villages would then be regulated by Commonwealth legislation which deals with financial services and financial markets, as regulated by ASIC. These laws include consumer protection provisions such as the prohibition of misleading or deceptive conduct, unfair contract terms, unconscionable conduct, licensing and high standards for those in the retirement village industry. This would result in a return to Commonwealth leadership of the regulation of retirement villages to harmonise and to consolidate the current mix of state and territory regulation with federal legislation including an enforceable Retirement Villages Code of Conduct.

Resumen
We carried out an epidemiological study to assess the impact of flood on the quality of life (QOL) of residents in the affected areas in China. We used a natural experiment approach, randomly selected 494 adults from 18 villages, which suffered from flooding as a result of embankments collapsing, 473 adults from 16 villages, which suffered from, soaked flood, and 773 adults from 11 villages without flood (control group). We used the Generic QOL Inventory-74 (GQOLI-74), social support scale, and questionnaires to assess the QOL of all study participants. The QOL was significantly poorer in soaked group (58.4) and (especially) in collapsed group (55.1) than in control group (59.5, p<0.001). Adjustment for potential confounding factors did not change the results. The impact of flood on QOL was stronger among farmers, seniors, persons with introvert personality, and residents with adverse life-events, whereas social support and extrovert personalities offset the negative impact of flood on QOL. Resumen
Hypertension is one of the PTM which is a threat, especially the elderly. Sundul Village is one of the villages in Parang District, Magetan Regency, East Java Province. The problem from the results of the study in Sundul Village is that there are still many people, especially the elderly who have hypertension and a lack of understanding in preventing hypertension, which is 75% or 60 out of 80 elderly. The purpose of community service is to increase knowledge related to efforts to prevent hypertension. The implementation method uses health education in the form of knowledge about hypertension with leaflet media given to the elderly and doing elderly gymnastics and progressive muscle relaxation. Previously, blood pressure was measured. Activities carried out on elderly aged> 40 years as many as 30 elderly. The results of the activity are that the elderly know about hypertension prevention, namely 75% of 30 elderly are able to understand and the elderly are able to do elderly gymnastic activities and progressive muscle relaxation. Seniors play an active role in this activity.

Resumen
This study analyzed the effects of low-carbon tourism awareness, attitudes, and behaviors on the development of villages in the catchment area of Erhai Lake in China. We quantitatively analyzed data from 828 valid questionnaires in IBM SPSS 26.0 using Pearson correlation analysis. Thereafter, we interviewed nine respondents, including scholars, seniors, tour guides, and local businessmen, about the results. Finally, we summarized the data and subjected them to multivariate analysis. The results revealed that low-carbon tourism education and promotion increased public recognition of the need to protect the environment by using low-pollution transportation, staying close to home, and buying minimally packaged goods to create a safe leisure environment. However, many tourists are not willing to accept having to increase their budgets for accommodations, food, and living to engage in low-carbon tourism. Therefore, we suggest that increasing incentives to encourage the public to engage in low-carbon tourism and other consumption behaviors may help reduce the damage to the ecological environments of catchment areas, improve the village’s economic development, and promote the sustainable development of the catchment area.

The accelerated aging of the Chinese population, a consequence of the “one-child policy” and China’s rapid economic development, has prompted the government to deeply transform its welfare system. These transformations affect all aspects of social action related to aging: pensions, health insurance, long-term care insurance, and housing. This thesis explores the government’s efforts at all institutional levels to adapt long-term care and housing supply to a society grappling with the decline of Confucian familialism. Locating at the intersection of the geography of aging and geographical gerontology, this thesis particularly examines the production of yanglaoyuan (nursing homes and retirement homes) and policies for adapting existing housing to the elderly. It draws on the case of two metropolitan areas with similar demographic size but differing economic maturity: Hangzhou, a prosperous coastal city, and Zhengzhou, an inland city in the midst of development. The theoretical framework connects debates on the characterization of social protection regimes to the literature on housing policies and asset-based welfare. The empirical contribution is substantial, based on surveys of 70 public and privatetakehold stakeholders and an ethnographic analysis of 50 residential projects. The results highlight a strong emphasis on aging in place within a home ownership- oriented doctrine, with the goal of providing 90% of residential options with minor local variations. Municipalities oversee the requalification of existing buildings and, as part of urban renewal projects, establish a dense network of community-based services for basic elderly assistance, in coordination with local hospital infrastructure. These initiatives are made possible by the significant public assets inherited from the socialist era, which can be repurposed, and more generally by the continued state ownership of land. This advantage also allows local governments to disengage from the operation of public yanglaoyuan by attracting private operators through the provision of free or low- cost public facilities. Everywhere, this “asset-light” business model is promoted to develop a wide supply of non-profit yanglaoyuan. However, support for this type of housing also involves public subsidies, leading to significant regional inequalities in long-term housing supply based on the financial capacity of local authorities. Even when subsidies are substantial, as in Hangzhou, they are insufficient to significantly reduce housing costs and ensure adequate quality of care, rendering the supply of yanglaoyuan inadequate in terms of medicalization and pricing. These dynamics contribute to reinforcing social and spatial stratification in the living conditions of the elderly, driven by differences in financial capacity of local governments as well as households due to notable disparities in pension amounts based on former employers

Resumen
The research emerged out of a need to address firsthand classroom concerns. The problem identified was that the D.E.T. geography syllabus had a Western-orientated world-view and, as such, was largely inappropriate to the experiences of township pupils. As a result, education in townships tends to maintain the status quo and the marginal position of the majority of South Africans. Recent unpublished research has shown that fieldwork is an effective compensatory tool. If fieldwork is used in the township , it can utilize the local environment which is familiar to pupils. Fieldwork, as an approach, has an additional advantage of being a vehicle for the empowerment of users. The research sets out to explore the potential of the township environment as a site in which fieldwork can be undertaken. Numerous opportunities are identified and these have been developed into fieldwork exercises. Out of the preparatory work, a need arose to establish the viability of doing township fieldwork. The concern is that, in spite of fieldwork appearing in the secondary school syllabus for a number of years, it is a largely unexplored teaching approach. This necessitated the testing and evaluation of fieldwork opportunities in the township environment. The chaotic conditions of township education impinged upon the research process, causing its premature termination. The latter part of the research process raises questions of an ethical nature. Notwithstanding these problems, several positive factors emerge; the negative aspects should not be allowed to overshadow the benefits of the research. An emancipatory action research framework is used to evaluate the research process. The study concludes by highlighting the main issues raised in the research and makes recommendations concerning topics requiring further investigation.

In this study, we use the principle and theory of social capital to study the quality of life of seniors living in senior villages; we hope to explore the relationship between social capital and the quality of life of seniors living in senior villages, as well as to understand the diverse and dynamic lifestyles within senior villages. The advancing and continued evolving healthcare system, science and technology, society and education have all contributed to the increasing life expectancy of the human population. The aging population has created the need to build senior villages. Today, both non-profit government organizations and private companies have started to fund and construct senior villages to accommodate the aging population - offering better quality of life and living environment. Much current research regarding the operation and management of senior villages focuses their studies on the quality of foods and housing within senior villages. For example, most research focuses on the reasons why residents decide to live in senior villages, some research studies the structure of the healthcare system, while other research studies the relationship between living environment, leisure activities, voluntary signup and satisfaction. However, the effects of social capital on the quality of life have, yet, been explored. Therefore, this study uses seniors who are residing in senior villages as research subjects, and investigates the impact of social capital’s Internet on the quality of life of seniors. We study past literatures, recognize the possible spiritual beliefs and values among seniors in the near future; we then explore the operation and management of well-established domestic senior villages. This allows us to study the relationship between social capital and the awareness and appreciation of quality of life among seniors living in senior villages. This study has its academic uniqueness and industrial practicality.

Title of thesis: Hakka Senior Care Centers: The Role and Developmental Strategy in the Care of Hakka Seniors, an example at Guoxing Village. Name of institute: Department of public policy and administration, college of humanities, national Chi Nan university Pages:140 Graduation time: 10/2013 Degree conferred: Master Student name: Bean Hong, Lin Advisor name: Dr. Chi Larn, Lin Abstract This research mainly discussed Guoxing Village, Nangun Village and Shiman Village, and took these three featured community care centers for examples. It investigated the form of the role playing of the community care center. By analyzing the merits and defects of the service, community feature and community execution, we can understand how a community mobilizes these resource to form every center and create featured and permanent developing centers. By means of this, we understand the real needs of the seniors and hope to examine the situation of the senior care centers in many aspects. This provides the reference to promote the service of the senior care centers. This research mainly discussed the role and developmental strategy in Guoxing Village and the improvement of the seniors in the community. By profound interviewing in the research, there are important findings as follows: (1) It is not effective to send greetings on telephone in the plan of service. (2) Let the seniors to participate the planned teaching and health improvement activities in centers. (3)Volunteer service people’s attitude affects how many the seniors participate. (4) Permanent management in community and insufficient specialists cause it difficult to manage centers. (5) Provide service in safety medicine usage to let the seniors become healthier. (6) Too many heads in community policy development cause the community can’t look after both sides. (7) The feature of care centers is in the management mode that the local people take care of the locals. (8) Participate center activities and help improve the body and mind and health. (9) The main function of the care center’s plan is to slow down old becoming. According to the upper research , this study submits the suggestions as follows: (1) We need to encourage the community residents and the local officials to participate together and pass the community experience. (2) We should establish mutual functions and exchange the experience. (3) The government should consider the policy of human power and budget subsidy. (4) Centers should provide assistance appropriately to professional human power. Key word: the senior, community care, senior care center, the community role

Due to the fact that the progress of modern medical technology and the popularize of health care system, the average of life expectany in Taiwan has increased steadily. Taiwan has turned into an aging society, and the rate of the seniors group rised steadily since 1993. Family patterns and living patterns have changed because of the low birth rate, and the pressure on children, to take care of their elders, is getting exacerbating. Although aging population is the trend of the world, Taiwan is one of the fastest aging country. To adapt living pattern in a short time, the demand for the seniors housing and seniors nursing might be increased for the upcoming future. The emphasis of this research is to discuss the management of Senior Health Village, in the aspects of human resources, marketing, financial affairs, expansibility, quality of service and so on. Through the literature review, field visiting, and the analysis of senior health village from experts, we can tell the difference between domestic and other countries. Therefore, this research not only can find out the weakness for manage the Seniors Health Village in domestic but also can make suggestions for the problem that we don''t realize at first. Elderly welfare issues need to be treated with a pluralistic and innovative way. In my opinion, seniors living environment should contain professional health care quality, safety spacious living space, elegant environment and leisure facilities. Seniors Health Village not only include all the elements above-mentioned, but also offer a high quality living space which can make seniors live independently.

Resumen
The thesis deals with the leisure time of seniors living in the country. The thesis aims at findings of senior`s leisure perception and leisure activities. This was based on some researches and sociological studies from this area. Some professional studies were partlz extended in the thesis. Very important parts of the paper are some findings of leisure possibilities {--} municipality offers, comercial possibilities etc. Seniors are large part of rural inhabitants who spend their free time in country. Country itself has a large potential to join a lot of quality leisure activites. Municipality and other rural subjects can increase this potential and thus contribute to make the leisure activity of seniors in country more worthy and good. On the other hand, come activities provided by municipality and other public organisations are not sufficient and seniors can`t use them.

Resumen
The period after the Black Death saw a dramatic demographic reversal and significant structural economic change, including the withdrawal of lords from direct farming. Vale and Chilterns remained distinctive, but in some links were strengthened and experiential differences were reduced. This chapter examines how perceptions of village space were affected by a steepening of village hierarchy and by increased geographical mobility. Great divergence between settlements is revealed in terms of forms and possibly strength of engagement and attachment. The character of social space in villages is examined in part through an innovative study of the reach of church bells, based on fieldwork carried out during the project. Field names are used to uncover shared stories and local traditions, which may have been cultivated and used especially by senior tenants.

Resumen
This chapter focuses on Naunakhte's first husband, Qenhirkhopshef, a prominent Deir al-Medina scribe who remained in office for approximately forty years (or more). Qenhirkhopshef became Naunakhte's (presumably) first husband when he was fifty-something years of age and she was twelve (or slightly older). Even after his death, Qenhirkhopshef would influence the lives of the sons and daughters of Naunakhte and her second husband Khaemnun. The chapter attempts to piece together parts of Qenhirkhopshef's life—most of which was spent before he married Naunakhte, from his adoption by the senior village scribe Ramose and his wife Mutemwia to his becoming an important man in the village. It asks a number of questions, for example, where Ramose's property went when he died; Qenhirkhopshef's biological parents; and Qenhirkhopshef's character.

Resumen
This chapter describes how data on girls’ hand labor and footbinding was collected in order to examine the possible links between them. It describes the method of inquiry and the selection of village research sites in eight provinces. Interviews and surveys with elderly women asked about their experiences as young girls before marriage. These interviews supplied first-hand information of both qualitative and quantitative value concerning their household economy, their hand labor as girls and footbinding experiences, and indirect data on the footbinding of their senior kinswomen. Assembling the responses first by region and then in the aggregate can reveal whether girls who were required to do handcrafts were also those who were likely to have had their feet bound. The chapter outlines the general characteristics of the village locations, sample size, and women’s birth years and education levels.

Resumen
As the son of Xi Zhongxun, a staunch revolutionary and a founder of the People’s Republic, Xi Jinping enjoyed a privileged childhood until Xi senior was disgraced and persecuted during the Cultural Revolution and his family broken up. Young Jinping was himself attacked as a counterrevolutionary and sent to a delinquent’s school for hard labor. Reduced to poverty, he volunteered to be “sent down” to a poor village called Liangjiahe to be re-educated as an ordinary peasant and to scratch out his existence at the subsistence level. Xi nonetheless persevered, eventually rising to become a village party chief and then gaining a place at prestigious Tsinghua University. Xi belonged to a “lost generation” of Chinese youth who were socialized with Maoist values of struggle, altruism, and egalitarianism but whose further education was disrupted by the Cultural Revolution when they were sent to labor in factories or the countryside.

This chapter focuses on accounts of mended and patched lives, exploring them for threads of kindnesses and poisonous knowledges. The forms of writing analyzed—novellas, short stories, and crafted memoirs—occupy a betwixt and between world of fiction and real lives. Jing-Jing Lee's two short novels sketch in emotional features of Singapore during three important periods: the years following World War II, in which children are lost and replaced; the 1980s, when children move from villages to high-rise apartments as part of planned urban renewal; and the 2000s, as elders move into small senior studio apartments. Danielle Lim's novel and memoir present complicating emotional features of public health crises over the same period involving leprosy, SARS, and nervous breakdown and schizophrenia. A tape recorder once again features, allowing an old woman to tell her tale.

The letters in this chapter speak of the differences among the three friends over non-cooperation. Tagore was determined to preserve the sanctity of his educational institution by keeping Santiniketan out of a political movement. However, that was not how all in the Santiniketan community felt about non-cooperation. For instance, Tagore’s elder brother, the sage-like philosopher Dwijendranath Tagore, who lived in Santiniketan, was upset over his younger brother’s decision. Some teachers also were keen to join the movement. Andrews himself supported the village work that one of the senior teachers led with the students who had come to the Santiniketan institution on leaving their government schools and colleges in response to Gandhi’s call.

Resumen
“Retirement Villages” (RVs) are a common form of housing for older people in Australia. RV contracts are very complex. RV residency terminates on death or ill health. At Macquarie we developed a free online RV financial calculator. This is designed to help consumers with understanding the contracts, comparison shopping, and avoiding costly mistakes. It takes account of longevity / health and financial risks. It converts the complex fee structure to a comparison rent payable monthly over the consumers expected healthy lifespan. RVs are much costlier than most consumers expect. The cost varies by gender and increases with age. This tool uses actuarial modelling utilising publicly available data on mortality and disability. The contracts have much in common with insurance policies. This is the first RV calculator available in Australia. The underlying actuarial model is very original and the calculator can handle the vast majority of contract designs.
