Texto completoThe PhD objective is to demonstrate that the report qualitative aspects of city-dwellers toward the environment in urban area are fundamental for assuming a better future of urban population in South East Asia. More particularly, we take the case of Hô Chi Minh City (Vietnam) which exhibits the extreme contradictions between a fast growing urbanism and the life quality bound to the appreciation of environment. We will detail those contradictions though the study of park in HCMC. 25 professional interviews and 300 questionnaires are carried out in 6 different places (3 parks, 1 garden, 1 arroyo and 1 avenue). Therefore, it allows us to deepen the inhabitant attitudes toward the environment in town and to reach a better knowledge of urban practices and the preferences of the city-dwellers concerning the green areas in the prospect of their arrangement and management… The investigation results appear on these two aspects : Concerning the management of green areas, we notice that the system of administration is undefined clearly and for the least ambiguous, as result conflicts emerge attributable to a misunderstanding among the inhabitants and the persons responsible for the green area development in HCMC. Through the study of the attitudes of the inhabitants toward the nature in town, we find that according to the city-dwellers of HCMV the practices of the nature are strongly connected to their everyday lives. We show how the relation to the nature reflects the culture as well as the Vietnamese civilization. On the other hand, the presence of the nature in town seems to have become a condition of the quality of life of the city-dwellers, which is almost bound to their survivals. Our work brings a new glance on what occurs in a developing country. We have shown the importance of the vegetable, which does not limit itself to parks or public gardens, but which also shows itself in the houses where the city-dwellers show their tastes and their preferences

Texto completoBorn from a context in which the colonial power has dominated and opened South-East Asia to a world economy from the 16th century, the prototype of an oblong housing type - used both as residential and commercial building, known as compartiment chinois in French, and shophouse in English – is ubiquitous in every city of that region. Despite of its great diversity, physically and etymologically, according to places, times and contexts, the impact of the Chinese migrants and of the European colonization in the production of these building forms is widely acknowledged. Known as nhà ông (lit. “tube house”), or nhà phô (lit. “street house”) in common Vietnamese, this prototype is ubiquitous in Ho Chi Minh city where it plays a diversified and important role as “vector” of urbanization, despite of its controversial origins. Since the Economic Reform initiated in the late 1980s which opened the country to a context of globalization, the production of these dwelling forms is part of the urban development and modernization, of emerging economic and cultural exchanges with foreign countries through the media, tourism and foreign investment in particular. Since then, foreign and “exotic” building forms, styles and urban planning principles are becoming “ordinary” cityscapes under the new urbanism of Vietnam. Our discussion is about the production and evolution of these dwelling forms and their role in the process of urbanization and urban planning in Ho Chi Minh city. This research is organized into three parts. The first one is devoted to identify the image of the nhà phô as residential form on one hand, and to light up its dwelling style in the context of Ho Chi Minh city today on the other. The second part concerns the issue of urbanization, aiming to explore the socio-economic and political conditions within which it results in the spread and production of the nhà phô. The third part is to discuss how the “transnational cityscapes”, especially in residential buildings and styles, are adopted and applied to the homes of Vietnamese people and to the urban planning, and how this nhà phô gives a sense of national identity and modernity in urban planning

Texto completoThe research is about the biggest two cities in vietnam : hanoi, the administrative and political capital in the north, and ho chi minh-city, the economic capital in the south. The period we 're going to study begins in 1986, starting point of the renouveau policy and finishes in 1996, year of the result of the economic transition policy. The corpus of our thesis is based, one the one hand, on the data of three investigations carried over hanoi and ho chi minh-city from february 1995 to october 1996 among a hundred actors of the urban development and modernisation policy. On the other hand it is based on the result of a comparative study of main plans for hanoi and ho chi minh-city from 1992 to 1996. As far as the vietnamese renouveau is concerned, we reckon that a new public urban and equipment vietnamese policy, is on the more. Let us call it the urban development and modernisation policy. It can be defined in three main periods : - the first period in the beginning of the 1990 ies : it is associate to the setting of referential renewal of the market economy. - the second period is situated in the mid 1990 ies and it deals with both the realisation of modernisation and urban development. - the third and last period is in the 1990 ies, and more precisely the reconsideration of the 1996 main plans symbolised by an evaluation and controlling logics

Texto completoSince the Economic Reform in 1986, Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) and its center (corresponding to the ancient Saigon) have in particular experienced a boom in construction, in which the private sector plays the key role. In addition, the city of Saigon, now part of the metropolis of south of Vietnam, has a rich urban structure formed by methods of construction which result from an accumulation of various urban cultures, each of them leaving material traces - a complex urban space now challenged by intense movement of construction which the Vietnamese planning institutions with their tools (plans and urban projects, legislative and administrative documents, urban programs) have not been effective in controlling. By studying the urban change of this space through its actors and vectors, this research leads us to a comparison of planning tools and their effects on the typo-morphological transformations introduced by private initiatives in the center of HCMC, through its history of urban construction since the colonial period until today

Texto completoThis research analyses the tripartite relationship between: Religion – here the Catholicism of the South Vietnam and more particularly to Ho Chi Minh City – State and Society. But these relations register in the very particular circumstances. Since 1975, Vietnamese Catholicism was confronted to a double transition, that driving towards a socialist model, then since 1986, the one who, with resurgence “ Doi moi ”, introduced the capitalist market. The application of the paradigm of secularization revised with three dimensions (institutional, organizational and individual) in the analysis of these relations proves to be efficacious since intervene correlations between these dimensions and that the process of secularization is not a single-line, irreversible evolution. Research also announces us repercussions of international context at the same time as those of socioeconomic context on the religious culture of the country

Texto completoTo increase the knowledge of chronic kidney disease (CKD) in public health in Ho Chi Minh City (HCM) and to develop the strategy of care patients with CKD, the realisation of several epidemiological studies were carried out within the framework of a thesis into cotutelle. The first part of work presents an overview of this matter in Viet Nam and HCM. The second part has the results of the epidemiologic ies studies. The survival study of 843 dialyzed patients in France showed that age, diabetes, a low permeability membrane and low albumin serum concentration increased the risk of death. Then, a cross-sectional and descriptive study of dialyzed patients in all public hospitals of HCM showed that the population was young and presented an unfavorable nutritional status. The main risk factors of CKD were high blood pressure, uropathy, diabetes, and toxic consumption. A percentage of 25,7 % of arterial hypertension in the general population of HCM determined in the screening detection. The last part is devoted to the primary results of the program in charge of arterial hypertension (16/24 districts and districts lay out the units in charge of arterial hypertension. 310 doctors were trained and commit themselves taking part in the program. 4091 hypertensive were dealt with). Then, the methodology of development and planning of the program in charge of the CKD in HCM city is approached at the end of this work

Texto completoOn the 13th February 1991, a colloquium about the « Vietnamese topicality » isorganized at the French Senate. When Georges Boudarel, an academic at Paris VII University and a Vietnam specialist starts to speak, he is immediately interrupted by Jean-Jacques Beucher, former Secretary of State for the Veterans and who is also a former French prisoner of the Indo-China War. The latter wants to confound him for his role as a political commissioner in the Viet-Minh camps. This is the beginning of the Boudarel case confronting former prisoners to Georges Boudarel during long months, and who is now the incarnation of the communist ideology. The sufferings of a community of Indo-China War veterans longing for gratitude are hidden behind the political dimension of this case. The situation compelled this memorial group to organize themselves and to build up strategies in order to get gratitude from the public opinion. This “subterranean” memory is going to face history in a zone of memorial tension, in which each one thrives on each other. The pragmatic sociology thanks to its followed approach of the actors allowed us to see the evolution of this space and how the actors witnesses took over it.In their strategies, the actors- witnesses saw the advantages they could take of the use of Internet. Indeed, it allows a visibility which was impossible with the usual Medias. However, this new order may have repercussions on the historical discipline, especially concerning the traces generated by the actors-witnesses and their perpetuation. It turns out that the writing of history of different contemporary events could be modified

Texto completoAt the heart of an urban region of more than ten millions inhabitants, Hô Chi Minh City is considered today as the economic engine of Viêt Nam. The authorities of the city-province are seeking to assert its new metropolitan status by regaining control of urban planning after decades of spontaneous development. This thesis proposes to decipher the contemporary mutations of the inherited spatial frame of the Hô Chi Minh City alleyways, taken both as an element of the street network and as ordinary public spaces. The turbulent history of the city contributes to explaining the specificity of its morphology, with very few spaces dedicated to the street network, whose hierarchy remains incomplete. Nearly 85% of the streets are less than twelve meters wide. Thus, the alleyways constitute both the heart of the urban framework and the living environment of the large majority of the population. Poised between public and private spheres, between collective and individual dynamics, the alleyway is an urban form in constant flux. This understanding of streets as an interface makes it possible to rethink the mechanisms of the urban fabric and the evolution of urban practices in the metropolisation of Hô Chi Minh City. In doing so, this research seeks to grasp the way in which urban dwellers are adapting to the norms of “urban modernity” as redefined by the authorities of the city-province today, as well as the way these norms affect the daily functioning of ordinary public places

Texto completoThe process of rapid globalization of metropolises is accompanied by a high demand for public parks. In Ho Chi Minh City, the latter manifests itself not only in public policies but also in the practices of users. These practices developed a large variety of individual meanings in the face of transformations in urban society. In fact, individuals, through their use of public parks, have contributed to the transition and enrichment of this form of public space towards modernity in their daily lives. There is a widespread desire to concern oneself which manifests itself in the diversity of physical practices and also in the change of perception of individuals. This is the result of three types of amenities perceived by users: health, the extension of living space and the quest for well-being through the presence of nature in the parks. Then, due to criteria linked to vulnerable individuals such as the elderly, migrants and isolated women, new forms of urban sociability are emerging thanks to the park helping individuals seeking to rebuild their lives. So, the latter is no longer just a physical form in terms of planning but also an "actor" who contributes to the creation of new forms of social cohesion and to cultural hybridization in the process of urban modernization

The group have decided to stay in Ho Chi Minh City after 1975 and 1978. A historical retrospective emphasises the role of the association-temples in the development of the studied area and on the group. The research shows how the events of that period, that have for main consequence the loss of the community's power, have diversely affected the daily life of these families. Different scenarios of adaptation to the new social and economic circumstance up to now are explored. Considerations concerning the place of the South East Asian investors in the 5th district at the scale of the study are also included. The study opens different possibilities concerning the future of the Hoa community of Cholon, in the light of the recent international developments, and particularly the new place and power of China on the international economic and political chessboard

Texto completoHo Chi Minh City (Saigon) has been universally and historically known as a planted and hydraulic city. Thirty years after the beginning of the Renewal policy (1986), it has become a hectic megalopolis inhabited by more than 10 million people. Moreover, it is facing an accelerated urbanization, which is both horizontal and vertical. While its center is transformed through the construction of many high residential, commercial and office towers, its peri-urban and rural areas are urbanized and modernized thanks to the construction of New Urban Areas (KDTM) whose construction starts from 1996. In this concrete urban fabric, interventions of private investors and operators play an important role. They are currently key developers of KDTMs, who contributes to the development of globalized living environments for the upper class. However these new neighborhoods do not always match their initial purposes, concepts and advertising. First, this gap results in a hieratic urban management. Official texts and master plans are still not accurate, and municipal and local authorities have difficulties to control a quick metropolitan expansion. Based on documentary, cartographic, and photographic research, as well as in situ and in vivo analysis, the thesis looks into the KDTM privatization’s modalities, from 1996 to the present day. It highlights the modes of private actors’ urban production, as well as the impact of KDTMs on the spatial and social changes of the great Vietnamese metropolis

Texto completoSince the Đôi Moi (Renovation) reforms initiated in 1986, the Hô Chi Minh City region plays a fundamental role in the economic development of Vietnam. Owning one-third of Vietnam’s industrial parks, the four most developed provinces of Hô Chi Minh City, Binh Duong, Đông Nai and Ba Ria Vung Tau form the largest urban-industrial pole in the south of Vietnam. Under the effects of the globalized industrialization, the suburban areas of the Hô Chi Minh City region are rapidly transforming, from the construction of multiples real estates projects and new cities to the development of new regional infrastructures. This thesis aims to decipher the synergy between industrialization, spontaneous urbanization and mega urban projects, as well as the interdependent relationship between localities and between different stakeholders. From local authorities to private real-estate developers, stakeholders adopt new negotiation methods and breaking-fence tactics, which leads to the creation of multiples public-private alliances in urban-industrial development. Contributing to the creation of new development pole, the metropolization intensified the competition between emerging provinces and Hô Chi Minh City, which reinforces the polycentric trend of regional construction. If the diversified metropolitan strategies adopted by the provincial authorities commonly lead to landscape transformation and functional redeployment, the competition between Hô Chi Minh City and the neighboring provinces generates multiples territorial fragmentation, socio-economic inequalities and environmental problems

Texto completoLocated at the border of the North of Vietnam and endowed with hilly landscape, the province of Cao Ba̐ng, country of Tày, was considered the most remote, barbarian, unhealthy and potentially dangerous region for the Vietnamese from the delta. In order to govern this area successfully, the sovereign had to accept indigenous leaders' privileges to better control the border and to keeps its prerogatives as symbolic elements, tribute payment is a representative example. However, beginning in 1820, in an effort to integrate this region into the official administrative system of the country, the Emperor Minh Mệnh conducted a policy to eliminate the power of chieftains in the bordeland region. This work brings to light a century of relations between the monarchy and the local authorities of the Cao Ba̐ng since the Minh Menh's administrative reform, including the political rivalry between local leaders within the region. This allowed us to clear up the integration process of Northern Vietnam, and to contribute to the restoration of a part of the history of North Vietnam' history during the second half of the 19th into the beginning of the early 20th century

Texto completoPeri-urban areas, with their landscapes of closely mixed rural and urban activities represent a form of urbanization that is emerging a question on the traditional urban - rural duality. The suburban Hô Chi Minh-City ( HCM-City ) is dealt in our thesis in the local context taking into account the theoretical issues raised by this socio-geographical phenomenon. Three types of inhabitant were identified in our study and are characterized by their different way of living the suburban space in HCM-City. They participate in the construction of very revealing field interactions between the countryside and the city, between tradition and modernity. Representations and actions revealingthe modernity which is distancing itself from traditions, can affect all residents. However, they are more easily identifiable in certain population groups, more specifically those three which are the most affected by the experience of confrontation with modernity: women, youth and the elderly. Their social roles are more likely to be modified by the peri-urban context, which results in some aspects of lifestyle where high pressure to change the behavior of their daily life including their mobility is observed. The analysis of new livestyles both in their positive and negative aspects allows us to understand the changes that affect social relations, religious practices, the role of women and family conflict, mobility and behavior of youngand older people as well in the studied peri-urban areas. The analysis also shows that the geographic distribution of the three types of habitathas conditioned the emergence of a new tissue of socio- spatial relations in peri-urban areas of HCM-City

Texto completoThe national feeling of the Vietnamese catholics became all the more violent in 1945 as it had been denied before ; so that some of the clergy didn't hesitate to launch straight into the political and military action. This need of political involvement in the fight for independance could be explained by the desir to put an end to the accusation of "traitors to their homeland". (they were accused to be at the origine of the French conquest) the catholics soon faced a dilemma : the keenest fighters for independance were communists and their project of society was far from the catholic aspirations. Between the minority that chose to rally the Viet minh, and the other that collaborated with the French, a major trend rose, especially among the influent clerical elite, claiming autonomy from the communist resistance and from the Bao Dai governement completely dependant from the French. The Vietnamese catholics tried therefore to assert themselves on a political level, by refusing both the French reconquest and the communist hegemony in the resistance to the French. From 1945 to 1949, the theme of the fight for independance prevailed in the political speech of the catholics ; then from 1950 to 1954, the theme of fight against communism took over, without suppressing the nationalist ideas. The experience of living under Viet minh power and international events (communist china, Korean war) caused a progressive rallying of the catholics to the Bao Dai's solution. Far from raising enthusiasm, it was the only alternative left. It's therefore during the war of independance that the Vietnamese catholics tried to act as political actors, and to free themselves from the function of instruments, that the Viet Minh and the French wanted them to play

Texto completoThis thesis describes the working conditions of young waitresses in Phạm Ngũ Lạo, a touristic neighbourhood in Hồ Chí Minh City, Việt Nam. Waitresses, without constituting a homogenous group, are often subjected to heavy workloads and low earnings, which can lead to an intensification of stress, fatigue, and illness. The working conditions affect their health and well-being. This thesis analyzes, with a feminist perspective, the unequal relations between waitresses and their male counterparts, their superiors, and their clients. Those relations, clearly shaped by deep class disparities, are complexified by the presence of a foreign clientele. Sexual harassment is omnipresent in some establishments. Waitresses, confronted with poverty and insecurity, risk being drawn into prostitution. In order to escape this trap and to improve their conditions, they develop various tactics and strategies with mitigated outcome. Keywords: waitress, restauration, poverty, gender, class and race relations, gender and development, touristic neighbourhood, tourism, sexual tourism, prostitution, sexual harassment, tactics and strategies.
