Abstract In the early 1950s, East German officials at the storied Maxhütte steel mill in Thuringia collected short CVs or “life stories” (Lebensläufe) written by approximately 370 blue- and white-collar workers who had recently become Stakhanovite “activists”. These documents, which all contain the same basic biographical information about the authors – from their socioeconomic background to their political activities – shed light on a group that has received little systematic scholarly attention, namely, ostensibly loyal and ordinary East Germans at the grass roots. Their early support of the SED state and its economic goals ensured the longer-term stability of a largely unloved regime. These valuable documents thus provide important clues for understanding the puzzling political and economic viability of the German Democratic Republic.

Resumen

In this essay, I discuss specific ways in which the Odyssey ensures its reception by broader and future audiences by employing both professional and amateur storytellers and internal listeners as guarantors of the story's viability. My focus here is on the differences between Demodocus’s professional storytelling and Odysseus's nominally nonprofessional storytelling. While the former serves to please groups of an audience who expect “safe” pleasures by listening to traditional epic tales, the latter opens an affective space between listeners and the storyteller, where the listeners’ affects are mobilized by Odysseus’s unpredictable and perhaps less skillful ways of narrating stories. Odysseus’s amateurism (as I would call it) instigates the audience’s desire to listen more and becomes a successful strategy to captivate the audience’s minds. In this age and culture often defined by the “narrative turn,” many of us are interested in telling good stories that can impact broad audiences. This much-loved, ancient work of fiction can teach us various techniques of good storytelling that can move the hearts of generations of audiences.

Abstract Bigleaf maple is a common hardwood in western Oregon and Washington. Stored seeds from this species are generally believed to lose viability within a few weeks. In this study, two experiments were conducted with seeds collected in 1986 and 1987 in the Oregon Coast Range west of Corvallis, OR. Seeds collected in 1986 had a field moisture content (percentage of dry weight) of 49% and in 1987, 16%. The viability of the seed with the lowest moisture content declined from 75 to 60% during 1 year of storage at 1°C; the seed with the highest moisture content declined from about 90 to less than 10% viability. Storing the seeds at -10°C did not increase viability. Stratification of seeds for more than 60 days did not appear to increase germination. West. J. Appl. For. 5(2):52-55, April 1990.

Abstract A series of controlled-pollination tests with fresh pollen and pollen stored for up to 10 years demonstrates the conditions required to maintain high pollen viability and vigor. During handling, freshly extracted pollen is highly resistant to exposure to temperatures up to 50°C for as long as 24 hours. Moisture content must be reduced to less than 10% prior to storage. It can then be held in a refrigerator at 3°C for up to 1 year in a container that maintains low moisture content. For longer storage, dried pollen should be placed in tightly closed glass or plastic bottles and held at -20°C. Pollen can be stored in vacuum-sealed ampules at 3°C for at least 10 years. South. J. Abstract Seeds of Hippeastrum × hybridum Hort. were subjected to dehydration, freezing, and storage for 12 months at various temperature and humidity levels. Amaryllis seed viability was unaffected by dehydration that removed 97% of available moisture content at seed harvest. Seeds were tolerant of freezing, but germination was reduced gradually as freezing temperatures decreased from 0° to −80°C. Moisture content at freezing influenced loss of viability; the lower the moisture content the higher the germination percentages. Temperature and relative humidity during seed storage governed seed viability loss rate. No measurable losses in viability resulted from storing seeds at 11% or 52% RH at 5° or 15°, respectively, for 12 months, but viability was significantly decreased when seeds were stored at these humidities at 25° or 35°. Viability decreased substantially or was lost after 3 months of storage at 75% and 95% RH and 25° and 35°.

Purpose: The main objective of this paper was to assess whether lifestyle audit as an anti-corruption tool is viable. Methodology: The study was based on a desk review of existing studies and documented statistics. Further, legal framework and case laws were cited. A narrative analysis was performed and at this point the information was interpreted by comparing the results with the results of other empirical studies. This information was interpreted using the “stories in the stories” and linked to the existing literature. Results: The study found that lifestyle audit is a viable tool for fighting corruption. However, there are challenges in the legal framework, particularly on the implementation. The study noted that the viability of lifestyle audits depends on judicial interpretation, political will and more importantly addressing of the current software and hardware issues existing in the current legal framework. Recommendation: The study calls for political will to ensure the Lifestyle Audit Bill 2019 is not watered down by judicial interpretation. It further recommends that the political will should be accompanied by executive action to fight corruption through wealth declaration.

<p class="Textoindependiente21">This paper presents a feasibility study of applying a fluid energy recovery system by means of wind turbines for charging batteries of electric vehicles. This is because the main disadvantage of electric vehicles with regard to conventional fuel automobiles is the scarce capacity of storing sufficient energy to run long distances. This can be carried out by recovering a percentage of the energy used to overcome the aerodynamic drag of the vehicle. This work analysis different case studies, with different driving modes, to quantify the theoretical energy recovered from the vehicle aerodynamics. Results have shown the theoretical possibility to implement this technology in actual electric vehicles.</p>

ABSTRACT: Macauba palm stands out for having favorable features to biodiesel production such as the high oil content of its fruit. Considering the great potential of the species and their applicability in the renewable energy field, it becomes indispensable to establish the right conditions for storing the seeds for propagation purpose. The aim of this research was to evaluate the effect of seed moisture content, packaging, and storage conditions such as temperature and relative humidity on the quality of seeds from Minas Gerais State, during a 12-month storage period. The research had two independent assays: (I) the seeds were stored with three moisture contents/ranges 4.0≤6.0%; 6.0≤8.0% and 8.0≤10.0% in impermeable packages, under room temperature and at 10ºC; (II) seeds with approximately 5.9% of moisture content were stored in three different types of packages: a) permeable, b) semi-permeable and c) impermeable. Three storing conditions were tested: a) room temperature and RH under laboratory conditions; b) 15ºC and 45% RH; c) 20ºC and 55% RH. Water content, germination rate and germination speed index were evaluated at 0, 4, 8 and 12 months of storing. The best germination results were obtained with the moisture range of 6.0≤8.0%, with seeds kept at room temperature; while the seeds stored at 10ºC, regardless the moisture range, did not survive. The stored seeds with 5.9% moisture content and at both 15ºC/45%RH and 20ºC/55% RH conditions, independently of the package type used, showed the best results. Thus, macaw palm seeds can be classified as intermediates seeds.

Resumen

Ultracold preservation is widely used for storage of genetic stocks of Caenorhabditis elegans. Current cryopreservation protocols are vulnerable to refrigeration failures, which can result in the loss of stock viability due to damage during re-freezing. Here we present a method for preserving worms in a dehydrated and frozen form that retains viability after multiple freeze-thaw cycles. After dehydration in the presence of trehalose or glycerol, C. elegans stocks can be frozen and thawed multiple times while maintaining viability. While both dauer and non-dauer larvae survive desiccation and freezing, the dauer defective mutant daf-16 does not survive desiccation. Our technique is useful for storing stocks in a manner robust to freezer failures, and potentially for shipping strains between laboratories.

Urban renewal issues of Chinatown in West central district Tainan City area continue for over 10 years. 105 years Tainan City Government identify that use the segment levy development mode and combine canal area as the main development direction, but there are still a small number of residents opposing. The main reasons include that residents refuse to leave their original homes, expropriation compensation price is too low, you can't change land after the collection, you can't choose buildings, and so on. Therefore the study focuses on except segment levy development mode, whether urban renewal rights transformation way is feasible or not, and choose the financial plan for the main study content. The development land of urban renewal area is more complicated than the general land. It needs detail consideration for the cost of land, building construction costs, volume reward, building plan, development time, the amount of own funds, loan amount, sold price and so on, so that avoid investment losses by the misjudges. This study discusses the major implementation of urban renewal subject is private sector in this industry. The main principle seeks for the profit maximization, and analyzes the investment returns of the urban renewal for land owners and implementers. The study time focuses on the later stages of urban renewal, analyzes net profit, ROI, NPV in financial plan. Finally, analyze the investment returns by sensitivity analysis, whether recommends the present case study is feasible or not. Furthermore, the study doesn't research the development benefit of public sector.

This chapter examines how Hitchcock and his writers transformed his chosen sources, revealing two tendencies which are important in understanding how the director and the three writers went about adapting their sources into films. The first tendency has to do with Hitchcock's attitude toward adaptation and the viability and literary stature of the works he chose; the second with the genres he characteristically drew from. Throughout his career, Hitchcock focused on source material—plays, novels, and short stories—that used to be called “suspense fiction” but today is usually classified by bookstores and reviewers as “crime novels,” sources tailor-made for his thrillers. This chapter thus analyzes the three novels on Hitchcock's filmic triptych is based: Robert Bloch's Psycho (1959), Daphne du Maurier's The Birds (1952), and Winston Graham's Marnie (1961).

Cynthia Felando demonstrates the relevance and significance of Jonze’s narrative shorts in his larger filmography. Felando argues that these short films both reflect and enrich our understanding of Jonze’s auteurist preoccupations. The short film is treated as its own genre with important specificities, including several related to storytelling, narrative, character, and genre conventions that differentiate it from the feature-length film. The chapter’s aim is to establish the viability of contextualizing Jonze’s narrative shorts as shorts, and to demonstrate the value of an analytical approach that addresses their continuities with and differences from his feature-length films. Felando considers his narrative shorts in relation to discourses in the emergent area of short form media studies. The primary analytical focus is on Jonze’s fiction shorts, although his other shorts-related titles are cited to demonstrate the persistence of several of his recurring storytelling, character, and thematic strategies.

Cloud computing is a highly demanding zone in the present IT enterprise. The key characteristics are adaptability, productivity, pay-per-utilize, and cost viability. Access control and information security are the significant issues in cloud computing. Various access control strategies are present. The major problems of storing data in expandable access control and access rights from users are not used in this scheme. This chapter presents a generic survey on scalable and secure access control systems and schemes in cloud computing with a key focus on cloud security. Research gaps in the existing literature on cloud security are presented.

Many news stories have highlighted the Republican Party’s problem with women, focusing their concern on the persistent gender gap in vote choice, with women typically supporting Democratic candidates over Republican candidates. Efforts have been made by the Republican Party to help their candidates, office holders, and staffers try to combat the gender gap. This book argues that the lack of women among Republicans in elective office is actually a much bigger and more consequential “woman problem” as it holds impacts for policy-making, claims of representation, and the viability of the party. The conclusion offers predictions as to the future of the partisan gap among women in elective office and explores its profound consequences for American electoral politics and policy-making.

Abstract Starting with the eighteenth century, a plethora of thinkers stressed the historical character of human thought. According to them, our beliefs do not result from intuitions of eternal truths. They have a history or, more precisely, they are part and parcel of episodes, of successions of events that, whenever remembered, become stories. Beliefs have been created in circumstances that account for their emergence; they are found at ascertainable dates and places. As a consequence, it is most difficult, if not practically impossible, to take meanings out of the culture in which they were embedded and to transplant them into our culture. It seems that they are unavoidably adulterated in the course of such an intellectual transit. This chapter offers contemporary views, negative and positive, on the standing and shareability of truths. To begin with, this chapter discusses the challenge that philosophical postmodernism poses to the possibility of holding universal truths, be they cross-cultural or transgenerational; afterward, it brings in a few facts that demonstrate the feasibility of dialogue between intercultural standpoints; it then defines moderate pluralism and proceeds to defend its viability; lastly, it makes a case for doctrines, authority, and a normative tradition.

This chapter proposes an alternative system for conventional reverse osmosis (RO) and electrodialysis (ED) desalination plants by incorporating the use of gravitational potential energy (GPE). The proposed system is devised with two subsystems, the RO module followed by the ED module, both simultaneously powered by GPE. This kind of energy is obtained by storing the brackish water to be desalinated. The system’s primary source of energy is wind. Windmills harness the wind energy to pump water to a reservoir located at a certain height (<20 m). The stored water has the GPE that will make a special plunger pump work. The piston of this special plunger pump is designed so that high pressure (about 15 bar) can be achieved in a different way from conventional RO plants. In the alternative system, here proposed, to pump water to the RO membranes, the special pistons go downward due to their own weight and are lifted, through a system of pulleys, with a counterweight filled with water obtained from the reservoir. The technical viability of the alternatives was theoretically proven by deductions based on physics and mathematics and with a special plunger pump prototype that worked successfully.

Making sense of Brown v. Board of Education, decided the same year I was born, and understanding what it did and did not achieve have occupied me since I can remember. When the fiftieth anniversary of the ruling arrived, scholars and media pundits debated whether the case deserved its landmark status and whether it had delivered in any meaningful way on the promise of racial equality for African Americans—or if it instead was ineffectual or counterproductive. Those are important questions, and this book grapples with them. Yet largely missing from the public discussions was the enormous influence of Brown in schools beyond race. The Supreme Court’s embrace of the ideal of equal opportunity and its critique of the separate-but-equal approach to education transformed the treatment of immigrants, students learning English, girls, students with disabilities, and poor students in American schools; religion in schools; school choice; and social science evidence about schooling—and the story of these changes deserves telling. That is what this book aims to do, even as it tells of a mixed legacy of Brown in these other contexts while also tracing reverberations of Brown outside the United States. To tell these stories is to engage with public policy debates over separate versus mixed instruction in meeting the needs of varied kinds of students. Nested within larger disputes over the viability of the racial integration ideal, this effort also explores the emergence of Brown as a resource for enterprising and visionary reformers concerned with gender, disability, religion, and other topics. The legacies of Brown invite a look at the capacity of individuals to push and achieve change using law and social science; the histories are interconnected with social movements as well as unexpected consequences of resulting reforms. Chapter 1 offers an analysis of what this landmark U.S. Supreme Court case did and did not accomplish when it banned official racial segregation in public schools. I consider whether the lawyers’ goal ever was integration, defined to mean both the side-by-side instruction of students of different races and the creation of school communities with a sense of common purpose and membership bridging different identities, histories, and past opportunities.

Abstract Producing oil at full potential with an electrical submersible pump (ESP) in a slim well remains a challenge in the petroleum industry. A conventional slim ESP system is limited in produced oil delivery rate with an associated risk of damaging the motor lead extension (MLE) of the ESP during the running in hole due to tight clearance. Finding a high rate new slim ESP technology is crucial to enable production of wells at full potential and eliminate slot recovery. This paper shares the success stories of testing two high rate slim ESP installations, and provides the advantages and disadvantages for each of the two approaches for high rate slim ESP design. The high rate slim ESP design options were assessed through field trials collaborating with different manufacturers. The slim ESP viability evaluation metrics were maximum rates, ESP performances, completion installation simplicity and surface controller compatibility. These metrics ensure eliminating unnecessary costs of ESP replacement in the field. The first design option is an inverted ESP design with an induction motor installed at the top. Such a design is advantageous in allowing a pump with a bigger outer diameter (OD), eliminating MLE installation on the pump housing due to an increased clearance, and consequently achieving a higher rate. The second design option uses a permanent magnetic motor (PMM) in a standard ESP configuration. The second design with the smaller ESP OD allows high motor speed, thus providing a higher head capacity and higher flow rate. A modification in the variable speed drive (VSD) design is required to enable controlling the PMM. The field trial result revealed multiple benefits of the high rate slim ESP systems in the field. The high-speed system that utilizes PMM retains the standard ESP configuration, which simplifies well completion and avoids installation complexity. The reduced ESP OD provides more clearance in the well, leading to minimized possible MLE damage during running in hole. Although the VSD modification is possible, the PMM maximum speed will be limited by the maximum capacity of the existing transformer installed in the platform. Finally, both systems lead to a significant cost avoidance by eliminating the need for slot recovery of the produced well at full potential in a slim-well, and avoiding unnecessary replacement of ESP surface equipment. The two systems were already successfully evaluated with a continuous run for more than 365 days without any issues.

Resumen

The actual problem in the development of new and improvement of existing forms of microbial preparations for crop production is the search for technological and economical components of the substrate to increase the titer of bacteria and keep their viability for a long period. The aim of our research was to study the technological effectiveness of the oilcake obtained after oil extraction from seeds of Linum usitatissimum L. (flax) and Brassica spp. L. (mustard) as a component of a liquid nutrient medium for the cultivation of associative bacteria. The addition of mustard and flax cake to the cultivation medium of P. polymyxa CCM P contributed to an increase in the titer of bacteria by 3.1 and 4.3 times, respectively, compared to control. We found that mustard cake has a stimulating and stabilizing effect on P. polymyxa CCM P, as well as a stabilizing one on L. nimipressuralis 32-3 CCM when storing for a month.
