In this paper, I discuss the context of a Late Roman solidus hoard found in the Casa delle Vestali on the Forum Romanum in Rome. The hoard consists of 397 solidi, Late Roman gold coins. Most of the hoard consists of uncirculated solidi struck in the name of the Western Roman emperor Procopius Anthemius (AD 467–472). By means of situating the hoard within the context of the reign of Anthemius and the collapse of the Western Roman Empire, the aim of this paper is to determine if the coins in the Vestal hoard can be related to other contemporary coin hoards by means of numismatic typology; this information could add to our understanding of why Anthemius’ reign is considered such an unmitigated failure and why the Empire collapsed soon after his murder. In this article, the composition of the hoard is examined, and the contents are compared to other contemporary solidus hoards in the Mediterranean, Gaul, Poland and Scandinavia. I argue that this comparison shows that the Vestal hoard is not part of a larger network but that the hoard constitutes the remains of an isolated occurrence—as initially suggested by its unusual composition and location.

This article reexamines the evidence for the relationships between the Vestal virgins and their natal kin from the second century BC to the third century ad. It suggests that the bond between these priestesses and their families remained strong throughout this period and that, as a consequence, interpretations of the Vestals' position within Roman society that emphasize the severing of agnatic ties through their removal from patria potestas may be misguided. When placed in the broader social and legal context, the ritual “capture” of these priestesses is shown to be a necessary feature of their priestly identity, which only marked the Vestals as extraordinary because of the unique intersection of religious and gender categories that characterized their office. Finally, the implications of these findings for the interpretation of Vestal virginity are discussed.

Roman women – priestesses, patrician women, mysterious guardians of the sacred flame of goddess Vesta, admired and respected, sometimes blamed for misfortune of the Eternal City. Vestals identified with the eternity of Rome, the priestesses having a specific, unavailable to other women power. That power gained at the moment of a ritual capture (captio) and responsibilities and privileges resulted from it are the subject matter of this paper. The special attention is paid to the importance of Vestals for Rome and Romans in various historic moments, and to the purifying rituals performed by Vestals on behalf of the Roman state’s fortune. The study presents probable dating and possible causes of the end of the College of the Vestals in Rome.

For all the insights reported in the preceding article by Vestal, the author leaves the impression that he is dissatisfied that our current level of understanding adequately addresses the complexity of famine. Vestal's article ranges widely across the research on famine, provoking a revisitation of some controversies and inviting further thought on the world's level of famine vulnerability and what researchers might do to reduce that vulnerability.

Il concetto di controtransfert č forse quello che nel tempo č cambiato maggiormente, tanto da costituire un riassunto della storia della tecnica psicoterapeutica. Ne parla per la prima volta Freud al Congresso di Norimberga, nei termini di ostacolo al buon andamento della psicoterapia, tanto da proporre, per scongiurarne gli effetti nefasti, dapprima l'autoanalisi del terapeuta e successivamente la sua analisi didattica. Solo nel 1912 apre uno spiraglio, riuscendo a vederlo anche come strumento utile al terapeuta per sintonizzare il proprio inconscio su quello del paziente. Poi non se ne occupa piů. La controversia viene ripresa alla sua morte da Anna Freud e i fondatori della Psicologia dell'Io e da Melanine Klein. I primi, che si pongono come vestali dell'ereditŕ freudiana, continuano a vederlo come una spia di qualche disfunzione nel terapeuta. La seconda e piů precisamente una sua allieva e paziente, Paula Heimann, al contrario, enfatizza l'importanza dei sentimenti del terapeuta ai fini di una migliore comprensione del paziente. Un altro autore che si č schierato a favore del suo impiego č stato il kleiniano Racker. Egli getta le basi per lo sviluppo del modello bipersonale di psicoterapia. Un altro contributo, seppure indiretto, proviene da Kohut, che sottolinea l'importanza dell'empatia come fattore terapeutico principe. Poi c'č Sandler, che lo considera una miscela tra le caratteristiche del terapeuta e le richieste del paziente. Jacobs, che introduce il concetto di "enactment controtransferale" per segnalare un fenomeno simile all'"acting out" del paziente. E Renik, che sottolinea l'importanza inestimabile degli autodisvelamenti del terapeuta sul paziente, purché rispettosi ed opportuni, per aiutarlo a lavorare piů efficacemente sulla relazione di transfert.

This paper focuses on the existence and control of particular types of orbits around asteroid 4 Vesta, including Sun-synchronous orbits, orbits at the critical inclination, repeating ground-track orbits, and stationary orbits. J2, J3, and J4 terms are considered in the gravity model of Vesta. First, the inclination perturbation caused by solar gravitation is studied, and preset and multiple inclination bias methods are proposed to dampen the local time drift at the ascending node. Compared with Vesta, the control periods of the Sun-synchronous orbits of 21 Lutetia and 433 Eros are much longer. Second, Vesta’s orbits with a critical inclination depend on the semi-major axis and eccentricity. If the eccentricity is not greater than 0.2, inclination decreases slowly and monotonically concerning the semi-major axis. If the eccentricity is not smaller than 0.4, inclination increases rapidly and monotonically. Third, Sun-synchronous repeating ground-track circular orbits of Vesta, which do not exist for Lutetia and Eros, are investigated. Finally, the perturbations of stationary orbits caused by solar gravitation and solar radiation pressure are analyzed.

AbstractThe Dawn spacecraft orbited Asteroid (4) Vesta for a year, and returned disk-resolved images and spectra covering visible and near-infrared wavelengths at scales as high as 20 m/pix. The visible geometric albedo of Vesta is ~ 0.36. The disk-integrated phase function of Vesta in the visible wavelengths derived from Dawn approach data, previous ground-based observations, and Rosetta OSIRIS observations is consistent with an IAU H-G phase law with H=3.2 mag and G=0.28. Hapke's modeling yields a disk-averaged single-scattering albedo of 0.50, an asymmetry factor of -0.25, and a roughness parameter of ~20 deg at 700 nm wavelength. Vesta's surface displays the largest albedo variations observed so far on asteroids, ranging from ~0.10 to ~0.76 in geometric albedo in the visible wavelengths. The phase function of Vesta displays obvious systematic variations with respect to wavelength, with steeper slopes within the 1- and 2-micron pyroxene bands, consistent with previous ground-based observations and laboratory measurement of HED meteorites showing deeper bands at higher phase angles. The relatively high albedo of Vesta suggests significant contribution of multiple scattering. The non-linear effect of multiple scattering and the possible systematic variations of phase function with albedo across the surface of Vesta may invalidate the traditional algorithm of applying photometric correction on airless planetary surfaces.

Abstract By analysing three paradigmatic passages, this paper explores how Prudentius uses classical love motifs and imagery not only to lambast paganism, but also as a powerful rhetorical tool to convey his Christian message. The ‘fire of love’ imagery is conspicuous in Psychomachia 53–57, which wittily blends Christian and erotic language. In an entirely different context (C. Symm. 2.1071–1085), the flamma amoris is also fully exploited to depict lustful young Vestal Virgins, in combination with other classical metaphors of passion, such as the ‘wound of love’ and the signa amoris. Additionally, the contrast between heat and cold is a central element in the description of the Vestals’ tardy nuptials, redolent of classical satirical portraits of vetulae libidinosae. Finally, in Hamartigenia 628–636 the relationship between the soul and God draws from a Christian tradition of bridal (and coital) representation, but the lapse into sin is portrayed as the love triangle, typical of the Latin love elegy. These examples illustrate how Prudentius creatively and consciously frames love and sex imagery in new contexts, exploring their potential and infusing clichés with new meanings and forms.

Viene qui indagata la dinamica della fortuna del tema di Vesta, nume tutelare focolare sacro, e delle sue sacerdotesse, le Vestali. Partendo dagli scritti di eruditi, quali Pirro Ligorio e Ulisse Aldrovandi, passando per l’analisi di alcuni repertori figurativi rinascimentali, grazie anche allo spoglio degli inventari, si sono rintracciate Vesta e Vestali nelle principali collezioni: Colonna, Porcari, Mattei, Pichi, Paluzzi Albertoni, Farnese, Lisca, Belvedere Vaticano, Cesi, Orsini, Soderini, Medici, Altieri, Ludovisi, Giustiniani, Pamphilj, Massimo, Chigi, Carpegna. Nel Cinquecento le grandi opere di scavo promosse da personaggi influenti portarono alla scoperta di sculture, monete e rilievi riconosciute come tali anche grazie alla riscoperta dei testi classici utili a ricostruire la storia antica di Roma, e al sito di rinvenimento. Nel Seicento i dettami suggeriti per il restauro da Orfeo Boselli portarono ad integrare le statue oltre che come Vestali anche come Muse o Igea etc. Solo gli scavi, condotti nell’Atrium Vestae da Rodolfo Lanciani alla fine dell’Ottocento, hanno permesso di far luce sullo spazio dedicato alle Vestali e sul loro aspetto. Altre utili precisazioni sono emerse dalla riconsiderazione della storia degli scavi a Roma dal XV al XVII secolo, nel Campo Marzio, sull’Esquilino, nell’area degli Horti Asiniani e di Porta Capena, sull’Aventino, nell’area Lateranense e sul Gianicolo, siti di provenienza di molte delle antichità considerate. Inoltre il ritrovamento nel XIX secolo, nell’area delle Terme di Caracalla, di una statua di divinità seduta, che è stata messa a confronto con la Vesta del Dodekatheon di Ostia e con la statua seduta del boschetto del Belvedere, può forse contribuire a far luce sulla statua che Plinio vide negli Horti di Asinio Pollione. Prendendo a confronto l’affresco con Vesta ritrovato a Pompei nel pistrinum una casa privata, si potrebbe infine avanzare l’ipotesi che anche a Roma in ambiti privati possa essere stato creato uno spazio celebrativo, consacrato alla divinità del focolare, nel quale forse trovarono posto alcune delle sculture considerate o anche i rilievi con offerenti provenienti dall’area del Laterano.
Here we wish to study the fortunate dynamic of the “theme” of Vesta, tutelary divinity of the sacred hearth, and of her priestesses, the Vestals. Beginning with the literary sources of Pirro Ligorio and Ulisse Aldrovandi, continuing through the analysis of various Renaissance sketchbooks, and thanks also to the perusal of the inventories of the various collections, Vesta and the Vestal Virgins have been found in all of the most important collections of antiquities, as for example, those of the Colonna, Porcari, Mattei, Pichi, Paluzzi Albertoni, Farnese, Lisca, Belvedere Vaticano, Cesi, Orsini, Soderini, Medici, Altieri, Ludovisi, Giustiniani, Pamphilj, Massimo, Chigi, Carpegna. In the 16th century the great archaeological excavations, promoted by influential personalities, brought about the discovery of sculptures, coins and reliefs, recognized like that, thanks also to the rediscovery of the classical texts, useful for the reconstruction of the history of ancient Rome, and to the sites of discovery. On the other hand, during the 17th century, changes were felt in the artistic climate, so Orfeo Boselli suggested the restorations of statues like Vestals or Muses or Igea. Only through Lanciani’s excavations in the Atrium Vestae, at the end of the 19th century, we have been able to shed light on the area dedicated to the Vestal Virgins and on their appearance. Other useful information emerged thanks to the re-examination of the history of the archaeological excavations conducted in Rome, from the 15th to the 17th centuries, in Campo Marzio, the Esquiline Hill, the Horti Asiniani, Porta Capena, the Aventine Hill, the Lateran zone, and the Janicolo Hill, sites from which many of the antiquities being studied were excavated. In addition, the rediscovery in the 19th century, in the Baths of Caracalla, of a statue with a seated deity, which has been compared with the Vesta on Dodekatheon and with the seated statue in the Vatican Gardens, can perhaps contribute to shed light on the statue which Pliny saw in the Horti Asiniani When we consider the fresco showing Vesta, found in a pistrinum in a private home in Pompei, we can advance the hypothesis that also in Rome, in private residences, there may have been created sacred areas, dedicated to Vesta, the divinity of the hearth, where perhaps some of the sculptures we have taken into consideration, or perhaps the reliefs that come from the Lateran area showing the faithful bearing offerings, may have been placed.

La ricerca ha per oggetto la memoria delle Vergini Vestali Emilia, Claudia e Tuccia nei Facta et Dicta Memorabilia di Valerio Massimo. L'obiettivo è indagare il valore esemplare attribuito dallo storico tiberiano a queste figure: Valerio Massimo selezione, infatti, una serie di esempi attraverso i quali indirizzare il suo pubblico all'applicazione di comportamenti e atteggiamenti conformi all'ideologia patrocinata dal principe Tiberio. La tesi studia il profilo biografico di queste tre donne, attraverso la testimonianza di Valerio Massimo e, in ottica comparativa, delle altre fonti antiche che ne conservano memoria, mettendo in luce differenze e analogie e, quindi, individuando le scelte nella conservazione del ricordo effettuate dallo storico. Come necessaria premessa, la ricerca ricostruisce le linee fondamentali dell'ideologia tiberiana e il metodo di lavoro e le finalità dell'opera di Valerio Massimo.

The cult of Vesta was vital to the city of Rome. The goddess was associated with the City’s very foundation, and Romans believed that the continuity of the state depended on the sexual and moral purity of her priestesses. In this dissertation, Virgin Territory: The Vestals and the Transition from Republic to Principóte, I examine the Vestal cult between c. 150 BCE and 14 CE, that is, from the beginning of Roman domination in the Mediterranean to the establishment of authoritarian rule at Rome. Six aspects of the cult are discussed: the Vestals’ relationship with water in ritual and literature; a re-evaluation of Vestal incestum (unchastity) which seeks a nuanced approach to the evidence and examines the record of incestum cases; the Vestals’ extra-ritual activities; the Vestals’ role as custodians of politically sensitive documents; the Vestals’ legal standing relative to other Roman women, especially in the context of Augustus’ moral reform legislation; and the cult’s changing relationship with the topography of Rome in light of the construction of a new shrine to Vesta on the Palatine after Augustus became pontifex maximus in 12 BCE. It will be shown that the cult of Vesta did not survive the turmoil of the Late Republic unchanged, nor did it maintain its ancient prerogative in the face of Augustus’ ascendancy. The thesis therefore sheds new light on our understanding of the nature, role and significance of the Vestal cult during the Roman revolution.

Les astéroïdes Cérès et Vesta ont motivé la mission spatiale Dawn parce qu'ils représentent deux embryons planétaires différents restés relativement intacts depuis leur formation. Vesta est large- ment considéré comme le corps parent des météorites HED témoins d'une activité magmatique probablement due à la présence de l'isotope radioactif 26Al qui était suffisamment abondant pour permettre la fusion interne des corps rocheux primitifs. La composition d'une surface planétaire peut être mesurée grâce à l'analyse des rayons gammas qu'elle produit. Pour la sonde Dawn cela est rendu possible par l'instrument GRaND et la scintillation d'un cristal de BGO. Cette thèse présente l'analyse des spectres gammas de Vesta par deux outils de séparation aveugle de source: l'analyse en composantes indépendantes (ICA) et la factorisation en matrice non-négative (NMF). Ces méthodes sont aussi appliquées à un jeu de données lunaire comparable et déjà bien interprété. Des spectres synthétiques lunaires permettent de tester ICA et NMF. La séparation de spectres élémentaires s'avère délicate même si on peut distinguer les éléments K, Th et Fe en raison des propriétés statistiques de leur signaux sources plus favorables. On mesure la sensibilité d'ICA-NMF à la variabilité chimique de la surface pour des Lunes artificielles, ce qui permet d'expliquer l'absence de séparation d'un signal élémentaire clair dans le cas de Vesta. Malgré les observations de la sonde Dawn et le nombre important d'informations fournies par les HED, il n'y a pas de consensus sur la formation des HED. On met souvent en avant l'existence d'un océan magmatique global sur Vesta, alors que la migration de la principale source chaleur, contenue dans le premier minéral fondu, le plagioclase, ne permet pas la fusion totale. On met en oeuvre un modèle de migration des magmas, basé sur les équations de la compaction. On adapte ce modèle en utilisant un diagramme d'équilibre de phase olivine-anorthite-quartz. Cela permet de calculer l'évolution de la minéralogie en fonction du temps et de la profondeur. Les résultats montrent que les eucrites et les diogénites pourraient être une caractéristique commune des gros corps accrétés tôt dans l'histoire du système solaire
Asteroids Vesta and Ceres motivated the space mission Dawn because they represent two different planetary embryos that remained relatively intact since their formation. Vesta is broadly considered as the parent body of the HED meteorites suite that are witnesses of a magmatic activity probably due to the presence of the radioactive isotope 26 Al which was present in significant amount to cause internal melting of primitive rocky bodies. The composition of a planetary surface can be quantified through the analysis of the gamma rays it produces. This is made possible for the Dawn spacecraft by the instrument GRaND and the scintillation of a BGO crystal. This thesis presents the analysis of gamma ray spectra from Vesta by two blind source separation methods: the independent component analysis and the non negative matrix factorization. These methods are also applied to an equivalent lunar dataset already well interpreted. Lunar synthetic spectra are used to test ICA and NMF. The separation of elementary spectra is delicate although K, Th and Fe can be discriminated due to the more favorable statistical properties of their source signals. The sensitivity of separation to the chemical variability is assessed based on artificial lunar spectra, which allows to explain the lack of separation of a clear elemental signal in the case of Vesta. Despite the observations of Dawn and the important collection of HED data, there is no consensus on the conditions of the vestan magmatism. A global magma ocean is often put forward, whereas the migration of the heat source, contained in the easiest mineral to melt, plagioclase, does not allow it. A model of melt migration is implemented, based on two-phase flow equations. This model is combined with the olivine-anorthite-quartz equilibrium phase diagram. Lo scopo di questa tesi è quello di descrivere e fare una sorta di analisi critica della società cinese contemporanea usando come parametro di riferimento uno tra gli elementi base di questa: l'abbigliamento. Verrà sottolineata l'importanza dell'uso dell'abito come abitudine inconsapevole e innata dell'essere umano inserito in un determinato contesto sociale. La tesi, tramite riferimenti alla psicologia del vestiario e all'analisi del gusto (inteso come come indicatore/parametro di stile di vita e di identità sociale), descriverà i cambiamenti che si sono susseguiti in quest'ambito in un contesto prima europeo, poi cinese. In un secondo momento si analizzerà la moda in Cina a partire dai primi anni del diciannovesimo secolo, per introdurre i cambiamenti che sono avvenuti, nell'ambito del vestiario, dopo che il Paese ha intrapreso un processo di riforme. Verrà descritto qual'è stato il cambio di mentalità nei confronti dell'abito, in che modo questo sia potuto accadere (sia tramite l'esposizione ai media come la televisione, le riviste o internet sia in virtù delle varie influenze dei contesti europeo-americano e giapponese-coreano) e quali sono le caratteristiche delle nuove figure di designer cinesi emergenti. Si passerà quindi a illustrare come sia avvenuta l'apertura della Cina dopo le riforme e di come ne siano derivate nuove classi sociali, con le loro problematiche, necessità e tendenze. Si farà riferimento soprattutto ai nuovi ricchi cinesi e ai loro gusti per arrivare a descrivere le figure dei manager che si fanno sempre più promotori di arte, stile di vita e cultura e, come tali, sono ispiratori e allo stesso tempo fruitori della moda. Nell'ultima parte verrà esposto un case study su Uma Wang, intesa come stilista cinese emergente, rappresentativa delle nuove tendenze della società cinese che si apre in un contesto mondiale globalizzato.

L'espèce Plutella xylostella (L.) (Lepidoptera : Plutellidae) défoliatrice des choux constitue surtout un problème dans les régions tropicales et subtropicales. La lutte chimique a rapidement montré ses limites du fait de l'apparition de résistance dans les populations. Des moyens de lutte alternatifs ont été mis en place, impliquant principalement des insectes parasitoïdes, parmi lesquels Oomyzus sokolowskii (Kurdjumov) (Hymenoptera : Eulophidae) et Cotesia vestalis (Haliday) (Hymenoptera : Braconidae) qui sont les plus couramment utilisés en raison de leur spécificité envers P. xylostella. Afin de contribuer à une meilleure connaissance du contrôle de la teigne en région tropicale, nous avons étudié les relations hôteparasitoïde entre P. xylostella et O. sokolowskii d'une part, et P. xylostella et C. vestalis d'autre part, en conditions de laboratoire et sur le terrain au Sénégal et au Bénin. Au Sénégal, quatre espèces de parasitoïdes sont présentes sur les chenilles : O. sokolowskii, Apanteles litae, C. vestalis et Brachymeria citrae. Au Bénin, seule l'espèce C. vestalis est présente. Au Sénégal comme au Bénin, les facteurs climatiques contribuent au développement de la teigne et les précipitations ne régulent pas les populations du ravageur. Dans ces deux pays, la teigne n'est pas contrôlée par ses ennemis naturels. La lutte biologique par conservation y est à prendre en considération et l'utilisation de plantes compagnes cultivées en association avec le chou peut être envisagée pour réduire les populations de la teigne. Les études en laboratoire ont montré qu'Oomyzus sokolowskii est un parasitoïde larvo-nymphal performant. ConcernantC. vestalis, les femelles détectent et reconnaissent leur hôte grâce aux lipides cuticulaires émis par les chenilles. Des marqueurs moléculaires (isozymes et ISSR) ont confirmé une forte variabilité entre les populations de P. xylostella à l'échelle mondiale, les populations d'Australie et du Japon étant très différentes des autres et formant deux groupes distincts. La structuration des populations semble influencée par le type de climat : tropical et non tropical.

This chapter examines the Vestal costume. Like the dress of a respectable matrona, the costume of a Vestal rendered visible her social status and moral probity. The full Vestal regalia included the seni crines (six-tressed) hairstyle, a headdress composed of the infula and vittae (woolen bands), a veil known as the suffibulum, a palla (mantle), the soft shoes of a priestess, and a long tunica (tunic). Through a detailed analysis of the Vestal costume, the chapter analyzes how its constituent parts worked together to define and represent a Vestal's position as a public priestess and ideal virgin. These two facets of her identity were inextricably linked and absolutely central to her role in Roman society. A Vestal's virginity guaranteed her ritual purity and her ability to secure the inviolability of the city. In addition to these vital ritual and symbolic functions, her absolute castilas provided a template of feminine virtue after which other women could model their behavior.

This chapter analyzes the ritual obligations of the Vestal Virgins. The extensive ritual program assigned to the Vestal order further emphasizes the connection between these priestesses and the wellbeing of the community. They participated in various rites designed to cleanse the city of ritual impurity. At the Fordicidia, the October Horse, and the December rites of Bona Dea, they played a role in guaranteeing the fertility of the fields and flocks. They were also involved in rites concerned with the preservation of the food supply, on which the security of the city depended, and with the transformation of raw grain into a substance suitable for consumption. Perhaps most significantly, the Vestals prepared mola salsa, the salted grain used to consecrate sacrificial victims and thereby to maintain Rome's relationship with the gods.

An opto-mechanical system has been developed to measure the dynamic behaviour of multi-megawatt wind turbines. This portable system is easier and less expensive to use than previously used methods. Thus it is feasible to use the system to develop a large database of the modal damping characteristics of operational full-scale wind turbines for the development of the improved fatigue life prediction tools that are needed in the rapidly growing global wind industry. The opto-mechanical system and a 3D scanning pulsed Doppler LIDAR system are used to make simultaneous measurements of the dynamic response and wind field in three different utility-scale wind farms. The wind farms are located in different types of terrain, ranging from the flat terrain through to highly complex terrain. The measurements are made on five different multi-megawatt wind turbines (1.8MW Vestas V90; 2.0MW Vestas V80; 2.3MW Enercon E70; 3MW Vestas V90; and 3.6MW Siemens SWT). A single-degree-of-freedom dynamic model is used to determine the modal damping parameters from the measured spectra of the tower deflections. It is shown that the aeromechanical damping ratios range from 0.4% to 0.8%. Measurements in the operating and idling phases of a turbine are used to show that the aerodynamic damping, which arises from the interaction between the rotor and wind, is the dominant damping mechanism for an operating wind turbine, and accounts for two-thirds of the overall damping; the material damping accounts for one-third of the overall damping. The 3.6MW Siemens SWT wind turbine has the smallest overall damping, whereas the 3MW Vestas V90 has the largest damping as well as the largest dynamic deflections. However, an assessment of the Goodman diagram shows that in its location of flat terrain, the 3MW Vestas V90 wind turbine may likely meet its 20-year design life. Nevertheless, for other locations, such as in complex terrain, in-situ measurements should be made to verify the suitability of the wind turbine for wind farms in such locations. This work demonstrates the feasibility of using the opto-mechanical system to develop a large database of the modal damping characteristics of operational full-scale wind turbines.

Abstract The WindFloat Atlantic (WFA) project is a small wind farm of three floating wind turbines offshore Portugal for a total installed capacity of 25 MW. The WindFloat, a semi-submersible type of platform, was designed by Principle Power to support a MHI Vestas 8.4 MW wind turbine for the WFA project. This paper summarizes the overall design process for the WindFloat platform and mooring system that was undertaken during the project engineering phase (FEED and Detail Design), with a large focus on the description of the interface between the wind turbine manufacturer, MHI Vestas Offshore Wind (MVOW), and the floating foundation designer, Principle Power (PPI). The design process and interface established during the WFA project described in this paper provides confidence in the design of the integrated system (platform, mooring, tower and RNA) and led to the successful class certification of the WFA project. This design and certification process can inspire future floating offshore wind projects to help accelerate the creation of this new floating wind industry.
