Texto completoThis research aims to study the electric vehicle range management and to explore the behavior and the lived experience of users of thermal vehicle (TV) and electric vehicle (EV). It has allowed the acquisition of knowledge about the situated use of electric vehicle and associated informational needs. In the first phase of our study, a framework has been established through the study of the thermal vehicle range management. We identified four styles of "range management" on the basis of interviews and quantified using a questionnaire. These styles fit the cognitive-affective relationship and the behavior related to the risk of breakdown: some drivers are worried and anticipate their recharge to control uncertainty and risk, while others does not care and expect to reload much later. Three classes of determinants (individual, artefactual and contextual), influencing the adoption of a proactive or reactive practice, were identified. The second phase of our study was dedicated to the identification of the range management practices through a two weeks EV loan to nine drivers. The results, based on diaries and resituated interviews, highlighted the transfer of range management styles from TV to EV and their influence on risk-taking. The results also revealed the establishment of an almost daily refueling frequency for most drivers, a greater anticipation to control the electric vehicle range, the context in which some problematic routes appear, and sources of emotional comfort and discomfort. The study of artefacts proposed for range management resulted in a typology of instruments: they were classified in prospective, reflective, reflective synthetic and pragmatic instruments. Their roles and appropriation have been specified according to the context of use and styles. The development of “instruments system” by drivers and practical tests allow them to control their autonomy. The study of temporal evolution of practices and experiences showed an evolution of the risks taken with the VE which coincides with range management styles and an overall feeling of control. With both TV and EV, we note that styles may evolve to a lower anticipation with time. The tests and appropriation of instruments contribute to reduce this anticipation. The third phase of our study was based on the experience of the nine drivers who participated individually in sessions of projective creativity, based on two prototypes and allowing the expression of expectations in terms of instruments and services development. Participants expressed more expectations for prospective instruments and the results showed a positive influence of prototypes models for the requirements expressed. These methods and results were finally discussed in terms of theoretical and practical contributions and research opportunities they foreshadow

Texto completoThe electric vehicle (EV) is emerging, but how to manage innovation in the EV ecosystem remains unclear for carmakers. Thus, this thesis investigates the innovation management in the EV ecosystem from two perspectives: 1) carmakers’ strategies in managing system-level interdependent innovation 2) incumbents’ organization design to exploring EV innovation. We select four leading carmakers in the nascent electric vehicule ecosystem (2007-2017) to explore the subject. First, we find that a demand for resolving range anxiety shifts the EV ecosystem to an integral system architecture and integration. Next, we find how EV markers dynamically manage battery and public charging bottlenecks. We propose that besides investing to solve bottleneck and collaborating in bottkenecks, focal firms would benefit from investing in interdepe,de,t non-bottelnecks. Last, we show how incumbents may overcome organizational rigidities in developing EV by creating an internal corporate venture and progressively applying its integration. Then, incumbents would be able to address the tripple challenge in EV knowledge creation by encouraging ambidexterity through dedicated mechanisms

Texto completoOver the past few years, socioeconomic and political developments, environmental and energy concerns, and ongoing technological progress nourish the prospect of substituting conventional gasoline cars with upcoming electric alternatives. A real success of the electric vehicle (EV) has become increasingly conceivable but is still subject to a certain number of conditions. Electromobility differs from the currently prevailing form of automobility mainly due to a larger range of the involved stakeholders, and a stronger dependence on the territory where the system is to evolve. These differences motivate the present doctoral research studying the emergence of electromobility in France from two major points of view: the stakeholders' organization and the territory's adaptation. Adopting a historical and empirical approach, the first part of this thesis discusses the results of over 30 interviews conducted with representatives of potential electromobility stakeholders that are likely to have a major influence on the developing electromobility system in France. It deals with the large variety of potential actors and their possible relationships by following a systematic and sociological approach. The applied methodology allows to detail and characterize the actors and to evaluate their likely strategies as well as their inclinations towards electromobility conveyed by various motives of interests and factors of resistance. Analyzing the probable forms of interdependence between the actors in the electromobility system also helps to highlight the lack of some essential links in the current system of actors. The second part of this thesis explores electromobility in a systematic framework in order to shed light on the interdependence between mobility and its territory. Indeed, each territory is endowed with a transportation system of its own on the basis of its diverse intrinsic characteristics. Local authorities have a crucial role to play in the process of deploying the system and of facilitating its functioning. This part of research therefore examines the potential for electromobility development at the local level: the semi-urbanized area of Paris-Saclay located within the Greater Paris area about 20 km southwest from its center serves as study area. The local transportation system's configuration and its dynamics including all relevant projects that will partially or integrally influence the area are discussed. The prospective analysis takes into account a wide range of considerations and potential determinants so as to render the assessment as realistic as possible. The study's findings shed light on the initial phase of the electromobility system's emergence while highlighting the flaws and complexities that hinder its future development. By these means, this research provides decision aid for policymakers and others stakeholders that are potentially involved in the electromobility system's deployment in France

Electrification is a systemic innovation whose massification should disrupt the vehicle dominant design. “Could this disruption durably destabilize the industrial architecture of a sector, considered as very resilient?”An empirical study on the electric traction value chain, confirms, to date, the resilience of this industry as carmakers remain the focal actor: electrification alone is not enough to destabilize this industry!But, technological innovations, new societal challenges, new powerful players in the mobility market influence the future of this industry.“Could this combination of factors internal and external to the industry facilitate a disruptive dynamic?”By analyzing 10 case studies of innovative mobility services worldwide, this thesis identifies 3 ideal types: “mobility service added to product”, “robotaxi”, “territorialized open mobility platform”. If the first one is a natural extension of The carmakers' business, the last two have the potential to destabilize the automotive industry.An empirical comparison, between China and Europe, of the governance of environmental regulations, states that China is now in capacity to impose its standards worldwide through a planning capacity combining directiveness, intrusiveness and agility.Theoretically, it confirms strategic theories and the interest of building upon the STT paradigm to shed light on transitions in this industry. It contributes to innovation management and servitization fields by proposing a design space for the development of mobility services and confirms that project is an important learning vector in a nascent ecosystem. This thesis supports the hypothesis of an avalanche of converging causalities leading to the destabilization of the historical architecture of the automotive industry. Texto completoThe electric vehicle (EV) market in China is booming, but Western manufacturers are struggling to deploy their models in the world’s largest automotive market. However, carbon credits generated by EV sales are necessary for the survival of their gasoline car business in this market. Thus, what are the high potential strategic opportunities for foreign manufacturers?In collaboration with Renault and based on five missions in China between 2012 and 2016, this CIFRE research first draws a state of the art of the opaque EV market in China, a market generated top-down by government initiatives and bottom-up by a low-cost and illegal EV market (Micro EV). We make a typology of models, usages, prices and deployment territories. While the subsidized market – except for premium cars – fails to appeal to consumers, it is instead at the bottom of the official market and within the illegal Micro EV market that a natural market is developing, with more than a million Micro EV sold, without purchase incentives, to private owners since 2009.In this specific institutional context and taking into account this double product and market uncertainty, we build on innovative design theories to develop a theoretical framework for strategic exploration based on the systematic combination of strategic variables and their evaluation. We identify two innovative routes not yet engaged by foreign manufacturers: "electric carsharing" and "low-cost VE".On the "electric car sharing" side, we compare Autolib’ (Paris) and United Journey (Shenzhen), two self-service stations-based systems that seem to pave the road to the mobility of the future and definitely attract the attention of Chinese authorities because of the technologies involved. However, in addition to the fragility of the business models, this opportunity seems difficult for foreign firms to pursue due to local protectionism and the complexity of public-private partnerships in China, often based on networks of informal institutions.On the "low cost EV" side, we are deepening our knowledge of the illegal micro EV market. A field survey in Shandong Province characterizes the market as well as the regulatory scenarios of its legalization. This market responds to real mobility needs in Chinese lower-tier cities. These territories’ socio-technical environments demonstrate strong compatibility with EV. There are fewer gas stations and public transportation systems than in big cities, and parking is easier. Micro EV are charged thanks to conventional 220 V outlets – which essentially solves the problem of charging infrastructures – and allow a true proximity mobility that is more efficient than electric two-wheelers. But the forces in favor of legalizing the Micro EV market have the potential to destroy it, injecting technology and standards, and thus raising prices. An opportunity, it seems, for Western players mastering design-to-cost methodologies.Finally, we characterize the globalization of Renault's EV program in China, within the triple alliance with Nissan and the Chinese partner Dongfeng, as well as the organizational ambidexterity that accompanies it. After attempts to "exploit" the existing EV range in China, the President of the Renault-Nissan Alliance initiates the launch of an "exploratory" project, Kwid EV, a low-cost EV for China. This is the opportunity for this research to contribute to the initial hypotheses about the lower-end of the Chinese EV market and to characterize the lineage hybridization that takes place at Renault, between the EV lineage (European EV) and the low-cost lineage (Kwid in India), between two disjoined parts of the organization. The world becomes a testing ground for networked innovation, with test markets like China. Then, the goal is to make this first shot succeed before reversing the innovation

Texto completoTechnology plays a very important role in Chinese discourse on the modern state. Chinese growth is considered by national leaders to be both a process of catching-up with the west and a race toward modernity. This discourse is disseminated to the whole society and at the same time influences the choices of many actors. Technology has a value: bureaucrats and entrepreneurs use it to accomplish their ambitions. They assimilate it in their discourse and incorporate it into notions such as economic security and nationalism. This thesis focuses on this process, and more precisely, on the genesis of two projects from the energy sector: coal-to-liquids and hybrid and electric vehicles. These two projects have followed a similar path: the central government first identified the technology as being a priority, then state-owned enterprises developed important projects using this technology with support from the state, finally private companies developed similar projects. This then has led to a showdown with China. However, this is not a grabbing-hand state vs. Private sector showdown, since these non-state-owned actors have benefitted from strong local government support
