Resumen
This dissertation sets out to determine the social function of paraenesis ("moral exhortation") within Valentinian Christianity. In order to explicate this social function, this study places the discussion within the context of ancient rhetorical practices of ethical admonition; i.e., how did paraenetic discursive practices act as rhetorical devices for affecting social formation? In order to establish the function of paraenesis, it is necessary to engage both literary and social aspects of the paraenetic genre. The latter is most challenging, given the methodological difficulties inherent in moving from textual context to socio-historical reconstruction of the situation behind a text. To address this problem, a method is adapted from sociology (interactionism) and social psychology (positioning theory) in order to critically gauge the social idealization of the sources. Special attention is given to the paraenetic contours of the Gospel of Truth (NHC I,3) and the Interpretation of Knowledge (NHC XI,1).
This dissertation is structured into five chapters. The first chapter will frame the discussion within current developments in the study of Gnosticism, where there has been a growing appreciation for social and ethical aspects of the Nag Hammadi tractates. A delimitation of the source base for this study will also be offered. Chapter 2 will offer a comprehensive overview of scholarly discussions of paraenesis over the past century. A functional definition, with an attendant typology of paraenetic material will be offered in closing. Chapter 3 directly engages the literary aspects of paraenesis within Valentinianism, placing the discussion within the context of moral exhortation in the Greco-Roman world, and, more specifically, early Christianity. This chapter will establish the presence of paraenesis within the Valentinian sources. Chapter 4 will then address the social function of paraenesis in two examples of Valentinian paraenesis, highlighting the rhetorical and discursive voice of each text. The final chapter will summarize the findings of the dissertation and raise implications of this study for the field of early Christian studies.

Resumen

The classification of gnosticism is highly debated amongst scholars leading to several misinterpretations about gnostic practices. Investigating Valentinian attitudes toward the 'spiritual,' 'psychic,' and 'material' bodies through a Valentinian dynamic of holiness highlights Valentinian conditions of being in the world: holy, common, unholy, pure and impure. Applying body theory and Mary Douglas's theory of ritual purity takes the Valentinian dynamic of holiness further into the reconstruction of purification and salvific rituals and reveals the role purity and impurity play in Valentinianism. Thus, providing scholars with new insight in regards to the conflation of sacramental practices in ancient Christianity as a whole and its effect on Valentinian bodies. This investigation overturns the popular notion that Valentinians were like other gnostic sects believed to be hostile towards their bodies. This, in turn, suggests scholars should refine their classification of gnosticism.

Speziari, Daniele.

Even though he has generally been regarded as a minor figure, Nicolas Denisot (Le Mans, 1515 – Paris, 1559), poet, painter, preceptor and, presumably, secret agent, met an outstanding popularity at the beginning of the 1550s and played, in those years, a crucial role in Parisian literary circles. This thesis aims at retracing the evolution of his career and the network of his acquaintances, as well as at establishing the value of his contribution to the renewal of poetry in the French Renaissance. Chapter one focuses on Denisot's biography in a chronological order and takes into account both his journeys, from Le Mans to Paris and then to England and Calais, and his relationships with the literati of his time. The following chapters are devoted to the three major fields which make up the main part of his literary production : his poems on the Nativity (noëls and cantiques) ; Neo-latin poetry, as it is represented by Royal 12 A VII Manuscript (British Library) ; and collective and multilingual tombeaux. All works are explored considering the features of their specific literary genre, with a special focus on the cultural context in which they were created. The final chapter deals with the problem of ancient and modern attributions, among which is the most controversial one : that of the novel L'Amant resuscité de la mort d'amour, whose unknown author, Théodose Valentinian, has often been identified with Nicolas Denisot

Resumen
Remiantis didžiųjų filosofų: Horacijaus, Aristotelio, Spinozos, Stendhal΄io, Descartes, Platono darbais, skirtais meilės temai aptarti, yra išskiriami trys pagrindiniai meilės tipai: 1.Meilė moteriai. 2.Meilė artimui. 3.Meilė Dievui. Vyro ir moters meilę A. Vaičiulaitis vaizduoja suidealintame fone, subtiliai perteikdamas idealistinės meilės psichologiją, orientuodamasis į amžinus, pastovius dalykus. A. Vaičiulaitis teikia pirmenybę artimo meilei – kurios pagrindas - atjauta žmogui, įsiklausymas į jo jausmus.
Antanas Vaičiulaitis (1906 – 1992) – is one of the most famous Lithuanian writers, literary critic, translator, editor who worked and created during Independence Time. In the 4th decade of the 20th century Antanas Vaičiulaitis joined the ranks of Lithuanian writers as prosaist, whose works are analysed in this work. The writer, who nowadays is called the representative of the „magic realism” created a tranquil story believing that the bond between the man and nature creates harmony in the world. Deep eduction into the human’s inner, his reverie, his poetic expression of Nature’s beauty, the lightness of the plot and naturalism – these are the basic aspects of the writer’s prose. The object of the work is the theme of love in Vaičiulaitis novel „Valentina” and in his earlier prose. The theme of love is chosen because love is the only definite answer to the problem of human’s existence. The main reason of fiction, art, religion and philosophy is to awake human’s ability to love and especially in the heart of another person. The purpose of the work is to define properly love in religious, philosophical and psychological aspects in Vaičiulaiti’s novel „Valentina” and another novels „Šiaurietė” and „Pažaislio vienuolyno legenda”. The task of the work is to discuss love conception in philosophy and religion, to show the history of the characters love which is determined to survive through the trials, real events, to discuss the meaning of signs of love which creates the... Resumen

Already in the second century, the Church Father Irenaeus warned against reading the Gospel of Truth that was used among the so-called Valentinians. For more than one and a half millennium GospTruth was lost until in the 1950s a Coptic text was discovered that could be a translation of that work both loved and hated.

Since the discovery scholars have tried to determine whether the Coptic text represents the one mentioned by Irenaeus, and whether its author might even be the famous Gnostic teacher Valentinus of Alexandria.

The text is very complex and the present study the first attempt to use text linguistic tools for analysing GospTruth. A new and sometimes radically different translation is presented, and an hypothesis of date of redaction and authorship is put forward. Previously Gnostic texts have usually been read in light of the reports of the Church Fathers. In this study an attempt is made to detect topics that were interesting for the Valentinians and that have so far been neglected. The analysis presents a new ethical debate among early Christians regarding the Biblical law, and a hypothesis of how the author of GospTruth wanted his or her community to act towards the neighbouring communities is elaborated. In addition my investigation draws attention to an interpretation of the crucifixion that seems to have distinguished Valentinians from others.

For a long time scholars depicted the Gnostics as evil opponents to the church. During the last decades this view has been criticized, and today many scholars abandon the term Gnostic altogether, and instead only use the term Christian. In my opinion such an approach risks to conceal the unique features of Valentinianism, and the results of the present study will hopefully shed new light on a branch of Christianity which still is relatively unexplored.

_______________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT
The Gospel of Philip is one of the manuscripts of the Nag Hammadi Library, discovered in 1945 in southern Egypt, at the region of Chenoboskion. This document is from the second century post Cristum, and is representative of the group "christian gnostic" valentinian. The Gospel of Philip is not similar to the canonical Gospels, it does not report scenes of Jesus' life, but has, in general, a catechetical nature. It is important not only because it is a primary source of the valentinians, but also because it reveals to us a little about the gnostic ritual and the sacraments, a subject relatively unknown even in dealing with all sources of gnosticism. Many researchers have observed that the initiation rites described in the Gospel of Philip are very similar to the ritual of the proto-orthodox christianity, which shows that the boundaries between the various christian groups were very tenuous. Such groups, as the valentinians, were called "heretics" by heresiologists, who actually made an attempt not only to disqualify them, but also to assert its own identity. In this dissertation will be made to compare data between rituals not vastly different religious traditions, but between Christian groups that coexisted in séc.II AD: Valentinian the group and the group of apostolic tradition, from several witnesses to the sacramental practices of early Christianity. For this also becomes important to describe the historical context in séc.II AD Valentinian ritual, so that one may have a greater understanding of the data analyzed.

With the technological and behavioral evolutions through which we pass is going faster, it is fundamental to understand the consequences of the media field in this scenario. Therefore, the present research aims to understand how media logics are triggered by new mechanisms, affecting the process of production of meaning. Based on the Valentina Schulz case and the MasterchefBR and PrimeiroAssedio (FirstHarassment) hashtags, we seek to understand the role of the hashtag that, once affected by the mediatization processes (reinscriptions, visibilities), moves from indexer to an interactive reference device. In addition, the objective is to analyze how circulation movements - characteristic of a mediatized society - are shaped in the production of meaning of content and the importance of these meanings in the generation of new voices related to these new senses. Finally, we try to understand the role of the media in legitimizing themes. To do this, two movements are carried out: a case study on the peculiarities of what occurred with the girl Valentina and its repercussion in the network and the subsequent content analysis on the circulation of the case in order to identify the mediatization in macro and micro moments of the process and thus perceives it as fundamental in the whole process of producing meaning.

Resumen
"In Praise of Bishop Valentine" is a cultural history of Valentine's Day in the American antebellum Northeast. By the middle of the nineteenth century, residents of England and North America had been observing February 14th with various folk customs for centuries. In the early 1840s, however, Northern businessmen and women discovered an enthusiastic and consumptive market for their ready-made valentines. Within a matter of years these merchants' efforts to sell printed cards fundamentally changed the way saint's day was marked. Valentine's Day had become one of the most celebrated holidays of the year and an occasion, specifically, for buying and exchanging manufactured sentiments.;New media and businesses helped to popularize February 14th, in the process taking a novel form of urban youth culture and rapidly dispersing it throughout the region. as it spread, Valentine's Day helped to define a new social category, youth, by working to guide young men and women through premarital sexual temptations and to accustom them to the emotional expressiveness that would soon define the Victorian marriage. The new holiday tradition of exchanging numerous missives riveted antebellum youthful interest for two basic reasons. By intentionally obscuring their mass-produced qualities in order to accentuate individual distinctiveness and convey a personal aura, ready-made cards provided young men and women with a way to use commercial goods to convey authentic, individual sentiments. Furthermore, so-called comic valentines, which soon rivaled sentimental notes in sales, vented youthful exasperation with middle-class sentimentalism, while simultaneously familiarizing individuals with certain middle-class values. Much of this unique, early-industrial February 14th commercial culture did not survive past the Civil War. But for more than a decade it remained an important product of and force in an increasingly industrial, market-oriented, and mobile Northern society.

In the European Union, the entry into force of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) has brought the domain of data protection to the fore-front, encouraging the research in knowledge representation and natural language processing (NLP). On the one hand, several ontologies adopted Semantic Web standards to provide a formal representation of the data protection framework set by the GDPR. On the other hand, different NLP techniques have been utilised to implement services addressed to individuals, for helping them in understanding privacy policies, which are notoriously difficult to read. Few efforts have been devoted to the mapping of the information extracted from privacy policies to the conceptual representations provided by the existing ontologies modelling the data protection framework. In the first part of the thesis, I propose and put in the context of the Semantic Web a comparative analysis of existing ontologies that have been developed to model different legal fields. In the second part of the thesis, I focus on the data protection domain and I present a methodology that aims to fill the gap between the multitude of ontologies released to model the data protection framework and the disparate approaches proposed to automatically process the text of privacy policies. The methodology relies on the notion of Ontology Design Pattern (ODP), i.e. a modelling solution to solve a recurrent ontology design problem. Implementing a pipeline that exploits existing vocabularies and different NLP techniques, I show how the information disclosed in privacy policies could be extracted and modelled through some existing ODPs. The benefit of such an approach is the provision of a methodology for processing privacy policies texts that overlooks the different ontological models. Instead, it uses ODPs as a semantic middle-layer of processing that different ontological models could refine and extend according to their own ontological commitments.

Resumen
This thesis seeks to demonstrate the Apocalypse of Paul's position within the broader Valentinian literary corpus from the Nag Hammadi codices. Previous scholars, notably William Murdock and Michael Kaler, have gestured in this direction, but no attempt has been made to systematically situate the Apocalypse of Paul in relation to other Valentinian sources. Quite possibly this desideratum exists because although the Apocalypse of Paul's debt to Jewish apocalypticism is self-evident, scholars of Valentinianism have generally neglected those ideas in Valentinian literature which are derived ultimately from Judaism, often received via Paul or other New Testament writers. These would include the notion of the Name of God as a saving power, even a soteriological agent, and the image of a surrogate heavenly temple through which favoured adepts may ascend in the present. These come to be combined in Valentinian thought through a high-priestly Christology in which it is by virtue of bearing the Divine Name that one may enter this ideal temple in the fashion of the old Jewish high priest, and now Christ. On the other hand, Valentinians downgrade the biblical creator-God to the level of an imperfect demiurge, placing him in an inferior heavenly temple while supplanting the Pleroma atop him as the true spiritual temple housing the Father of Christ. The development of this constellation of ideas is traced principally from Valentinus himself, through the Gospel of Truth and the Excerpts from Theodotus, to the Gospel of Philip, where it receives its most extensive explication. It is argued that the Apocalypse of Paul consciously builds on this intellectual current using the apostle's image in order to construct an ideal authoritative account of how such ascent ought to appear among Valentinian initiates and thereby contribute to the rhetorical and psychological construction of future experiences among the elect community.

Resumen
The final chapter deals with the problem of ancient and modern attributions, among which is the most controversial one : that of the novel L'Amant resuscité de la mort d'amour, whose unknown author, Théodose Valentinian, has often been identified with Nicolas Denisot.

Background: This thesis aims to show that the narratives of the Nag Hammadi Apocalypse of Pauland First Apocalypse of James are written for a Valentinian audience. The purpose is to broaden the field of research on Valentinianism by showing how the authors and their implied readers composed and perceived the texts in question. Method: Comparing the mythological language of the two narratives and their description of a hero’s journey in a transcendent reality it is possible to disentangle the Valentinian material from the imaginative world of the reader, a world consisted of ancient Egyptian and Greek mythology as well as Jewish apocalypticism and early Christian legends and traditions. The texts are also compared with new research in the field, other related Valentinian scriptures, the New Testament, and Christian Apocrypha. Results: The texts are pseudepigraphic and written within a Jewish apocalyptic genre sometime during the late second or early third century. The symbolism and the diverse metaphors of the narratives indicate that the texts incorporate a specific soteriological message through embedded Valentinian mythology. The implied reader is to understand that the material world is an illusion and that the purpose of the initiate is to awaken the mind and acquire knowledge about the truth. By doing so the redemption of the believer’s spirit from its human body and soul leads to the spirits reunion with God. Conclusion: The analysis of the texts points toward the fact that the narratives could very well have been used for catechetical or other educational purposes within a Valentinian community. The language and form of the two narratives fit to serve this purpose. In many ways, the reader has to be initiated within a Valentinian context in order to grasp the intended message.
