Resumen
There have been quite a few attempts to compute synchronous generator parameters based on voltage and current synchrophasors taken under power system transients. However, we have not seen any publications with thorough analysis as to how soon the phasor measurement unit reacts to disturbance conditions, which components of the transient are filtered out and which are passed through, as well as what the total vector error is. The goal of this research is to determine all of these characteristics of a phasor measurement unit when playing back transient oscillograms for a stator short circuit obtained through mathematical modeling. The transient oscillograms have been derived via both a full Park-Gorev system of flux linkage equations as well as the MATLAB/Simulink Synchronous Machine block. Physical modeling was then conducted via a real-time digital simulator (RTDS) along with a dedicated phasor measurement unit ENIP-2 (PMU), and the stator current phasors were recorded. Our analysis has shown that both RTDS and ENIP-2 (PMU) almost entirely filter out the exponentially decaying DC component of the fault current while closely following the periodical signal envelope. The total vector error has been estimated to become below 1–2 % after around 0,02–0,03 s into the fault when selecting the “P” class filters according to IEEE C37.118. We have come to a conclusion that synchrophasor measurements under power system disturbances could be utilized for estimating the synchronous, transient, and subtransient generator parameters. The selected synchronous machine model in the form of flux linkage equations is correct, as the obtained transient oscillograms are exactly the same as those produced by Simulink. “P” class phasor measurements can be recommended for representing transients in the stator circuit of a synchronous generator. The results of this investigation are meant to be employed for synchronous machine parameter estimation based on phasors sourced from RTDS and, hopefully, from phasor measurement units installed at power plants.

Resumen
Abstract We have extracted 636 spectra taken at the positions of 583 transient sources from the third data release of the Hobby–Eberly Telescope Dark Energy eXperiment (HETDEX). The transients were discovered by the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) during 2018–2022. The HETDEX spectra provide a potential means to obtain classifications for a large number of objects found by photometric surveys for free. We attempt to explore and classify the spectra by utilizing several template-matching techniques. We have identified two transient sources, ZTF20aatpoos = AT 2020fiz and ZTF19abdkelq, as supernova (SN) candidates. We classify AT 2020fiz as a Type IIP SN observed ∼10 days after explosion, and we propose ZTF19abdkelq as a likely Type Ia SN caught ∼40 days after maximum light. ZTF photometry of these two sources are consistent with their classifications as SNe. Beside these two objects, we have confirmed several ZTF transients as variable active galactic nuclei based on their spectral appearance, and determined the host galaxy types of several other ZTF transients.

Resumen
Transient vibration environments are an important consideration in qualification of aircraft store components — particularly for aircraft with internal storage bays. Generally, these transient vibration environments provide high stimulus input to a store via aerodynamic forces for up to 15 seconds on numerous occasions during training. With the recent introduction of the technique of Time Waveform Replication (TWR) to laboratory testing (MIL-STD-810G Method 525), store components can be readily tested to replications of field-measured transient vibration environments. This paper demonstrates the use of the Generalized Linear Mixed Model (GLMM) on a collection of measured field responses for specification of transient vibration environments. The paper establishes a basis for moving from (1) transient vibration measured field response to (2) transient vibration stochastic specification of the measured field response to (3) laboratory simulation of transient vibration environments.

Resumen
Transient materials/electronics is an emerging class of technology concerned with materials and devices that are designed to operate over a pre-defined period of time, then undergo controlled degradation when exposed to stimuli. Degradation/transiency rate in solvent-triggered devices is strongly dependent on the chemical composition of the constituents, as well as their interactions with the solvent upon exposure. Such interactions are typically slow, passive, and diffusion-driven. In this study, we are introducing and exploring the integration of gas-forming reactions into transient materials/electronics to achieve expedited and active transiency. The integration of more complex chemical reaction paths to transiency not only expedites the dissolution mechanism but also maintains the pre-transiency stability of the system while under operation. A proof-of-concept transient electronic device, utilizing sodium-bicarbonate/citric-acid pair as gas-forming agents, is demonstrated and studied vs. control devices in the absence of gas-forming agents. While exhibiting enhanced transiency behavior, substrates with gas-forming agents also demonstrated sufficient mechanical properties and physical stability to be used as platforms for electronics.

Resumen
Killer whales, Orcinus orca (L., 1758), in the North Pacific are classified as three genetically distinct ecotypes: residents (fish-eaters), transients (mammal-eaters), and offshores (probable fish-eaters). Within the transient ecotype, three putative subpopulations have been identified by genetic analysis: West Coast transients, Gulf of Alaska transients, and AT1 transients. Here, we examine the behavior and vocalizations of the AT1 transients, which are found only in the Prince William Sound/Kenai Fjords region, to determine if their acoustic behavior distinguishes them from other genetically distinct transient subpopulations. We identified 14 discrete, pulsed calls in the vocal repertoire of the AT1 transients. These calls were entirely different than those of West Coast and sympatric Gulf of Alaska transients. Despite their large call repertoire, AT1 transients were silent most of the time, utilizing a foraging strategy of stealth, acoustic crypsis, and passive listening for locating marine-mammal prey. Unlike resident killer whales, AT1 transient vocalization types were context specific. For example, lone AT1 transients produced long-distance, high-amplitude pulsed calls in stereotyped sequences to locate other AT1 whales. In contrast, hunting individuals emitted low-amplitude pulsed calls to maintain contact with group members. The repertoire and call-usage patterns of the AT1 transients are consistent with genetic evidence that they are a unique, reproductively and socially isolated subpopulation in danger of extinction.

Resumen
Commutation circuits are commonly used for low on state resistance and high current interruption capability if this can not be achieved by a single device or single current switching path. In case of fault detection, a very fast commutation of the current from the low-impedance main current path into the parallel high-current interrupting path is necessary. For single usage applications a low-cost approach is the utilization of a pyrotechnical switch in the low-impedance path. Compared to other electromechanical switches, those switches provide very high velocity of contact separation and thus a fast arc voltage rise with short commutation times. Here, measurements of the contact movement of a pyrotechnical switch were carried out using optical high speed imaging and an arc elongation up to 100ms−1 was calculated. From this, transient arc characteristics were measured in a simplified commutation network during the period until current zero in the low-impedance main current path.

Resumen
Dish-Stirling solar receiver designs are investigated and evaluated for possible use with sensible energy storage in single-phase materials. The designs differ from previous receivers in utilizing axial conduction in the storage material for attenuation of the solar flux transients due to intermittent cloud cover, and in having convective heat removal at the base of the receiver. One-dimensional, time-dependent heat transfer equations are formulated for the storage material temperature field, including losses to the environment, and a general heat exchange effectiveness boundary condition at the base. The solar source flux is represented as the sum of steady and periodic cloud-transient components, with the steady component solved subject to specified receiver thermal efficiency. For the transient cloud-cover component the Fast Fourier Transform algorithm (FFT) is applied, and the complex transfer function of the receiver is obtained as a filter for the input flux spectrum. Inverse transformation results in the amplitudes and mode shapes of the transient temperature component. By adjustment of design parameters, the cloud-cover amplitude variations of the outlet gas temperature can be limited to acceptable magnitudes, thus simplifying control systems.

Resumen
AbstractWe discuss two approaches to searches for gravitational-wave (GW) and electromagnetic (EM) counterparts of binary neutron-star mergers. The first approach relies on triggering archival searches of GW detector data based on detections of EM transients. Quantitative estimates of the improvement to GW detector reach due to the increased confidence in the presence and parameters of a signal from a binary merger gained from the EM transient suggest utilizing other transients in addition to short gamma-ray bursts. The second approach involves following up GW candidates with targeted EM observations. We argue for the use of slower but optimal parameter-estimation techniques and for a more sophisticated use of astrophysical prior information, including galaxy catalogues to find preferred follow-up locations.

Resumen
<span>Multiterminal High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) transmission utilizing Line Commutated Converter (LCC-HVDC) technology is on the increase in interconnecting a remote generating station to any urban centre via long distance DC lines. This Multiterminal-HVDC (MTDC) system offers a reduced right of way benefits, reduction in transmission losses, as well as robust power controllability with enhanced stability margin. However, utilizing the MTDC system in an AC network bring about a new area of associated fault analysis as well as the effect on the entire AC system during a transient fault condition. This paper analyses the fault current contribution of an MTDC system during transient fault to the rotor angle of a synchronous generator. The results show a high rotor angle swing during a transient fault and the effectiveness of fast power system stabilizer connected to the generator automatic voltage regulator in damping the system oscillations. The MTDC link improved the system performance by providing an alternative path of power transfer and quick system recovery during transient fault thus increasing the rate at which the system oscillations were damped out. This shows great improvement compared to when power was being transmitted via AC lines.</span>

Resumen
Production system modeling (PSM) for quality propagation involves mapping the principles between components and systems. While most existing studies focus on the steady-state analysis, the transient quality analysis remains largely unexplored. It is of significance to fully understand quality propagation, especially during transients, to shorten product changeover time, decrease quality loss, and improve quality. In this paper, a novel analytical PSM approach is established based on the Markov model, to explore product quality propagation for transient analysis of serial multi-stage production systems. The cascade property for quality propagation among correlated sequential stages was investigated, taking into account both the status of the current stage and the quality of the outputs from upstream stages. Closed-form formulae to evaluate transient quality performances of multi-stage systems were formulated, including the dynamics of system quality, settling time, and quality loss. An iterative procedure utilizing the aggregation technique is presented to approximate transient quality performance with computational efficiency and high accuracy. Moreover, system theoretic properties of quality measures were analyzed and the quality bottleneck identification method was investigated. In the case study, the modeling error was 0.36% and the calculation could clearly track system dynamics; quality bottleneck was identified to decrease the quality loss and facilitate continuous improvement. The experimental results illustrate the applicability of the proposed PSM approach.

Electronics 10, n.º 22 (13 de noviembre de 2021): 2785. http://dx.doi.org/10.3390/electronics10222785.

Resumen
Miniaturization of electronics devices is often limited by the concomitant high heat fluxes (cooling load) and maldistribution of temperature profiles (hot spots). Thermal energy storage (TES) platforms providing supplemental cooling can be a cost-effective solution, that often leverages phase change materials (PCM). Although salt hydrates provide higher storage capacities and power ratings (as compared to that of the organic PCMs), they suffer from reliability issues (e.g., supercooling). “Cold Finger Technique (CFT)” can obviate supercooling by maintaining a small mass fraction of the PCM in a solid state for enabling spontaneous nucleation. Optimization of CFT necessitates real-time forecasting of the transient values of the melt-fraction. In this study, the artificial neural network (ANN) is explored for real-time prediction of the time remaining to reach a target value of melt-fraction based on the prior history of the spatial distribution of the surface temperature transients. Two different approaches were explored for training the ANN model, using: (1) transient PCM-temperature data; or (2) transient surface-temperature data. When deployed in a heat sink that leverages PCM-based passive thermal management systems for cooling electronic chips and packages, this maverick approach (using the second method) affords cheaper costs, better sustainability, higher reliability, and resilience. The error in prediction varies during the melting process. During the final stages of the melting cycle, the errors in the predicted values are ~5% of the total time-scale of the PCM melting experiments.

Resumen
This paper presents the results of an experimental and theoretical investigation of the pressure drop associated with transient two-phase condensing flows involving complete condensation. Utilizing the system mean void fraction model, and the similarity relationships associated with it, an analytical prediction of the transient pressure drop is possible, including a simplified closed-form version. The capability of the proposed theory is demonstrated by comparison with experimental measurements of the transient pressure drop in a horizontal tube condenser following an exponential-type change in the inlet mass flow rate. Good agreement is shown to exist between the predicted and experimental results.

Resumen
Thermal distribution and fluctuation in any piping component due to turbulent mixing of flows with different temperatures vary greatly. Usually, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) tools are used for estimation of flows in piping components. Fatigue that results from fluctuating thermal mass flow across the components can be computed by coupling the CFD results with structural mechanics based finite element (FE) results. However, this procedure is laborious and computationally very expensive. A fluid temperature function has been developed in this paper as a function of internal wall coordinates and time by interpolating experimental or CFD results. Bicubic interpolation function has been used for accurate interpolation. Finally, a thermal transient FE analysis for an actual Tee from a nuclear power plant (NPP) was performed by using the developed fluid temperature function and interpolated CFD results.

Resumen
A model for predicting cutting tool temperatures under transient conditions is presented. The model of Stephenson et al. [10] is extended to include the initial transient response to the tool temperature and nonuniform heat flux distributions. The main goal in this paper is to be able to accurately predict the initial transient tool temperature response, or temperatures in interrupted cutting for cases where the cutting time is short. A method to predict the true transient energy partitioning instead of quasi-steady energy partitioning (Stephenson et al., [10]), without seeking the full numerical analysis, has been developed. In this paper, the transient energy partitioning is obtained through a fixed-point iteration process by modifying the quasi-steady energy partitioning method presented by Loewen and Shaw [11]. The predicted transient tool temperatures are compared quantitatively to the experimental data. Utilizing a semi-empirical correlation for heat flux distribution along the tool-chip interface, the temperature distribution is calculated and compared qualitatively to existing experimental data.

Resumen
Conventional condition monitoring techniques such as vibration, acoustic, ultrasonic and thermal techniques require additional equipment such as sensors, data acquisition and data processing systems which are expensive and complicated. In the meantime modern sensorless flux vector controlled drives can provide many different data accessible for machine control which has not been explored fully for the purpose of condition monitoring. In this paper polynomial models are employed to describe nonlinear relationships of variables available from such drives and to generate residuals for real time fault detection and performance comparisons. Both transient and steady state system behaviours have been investigated for optimal detection performance. Amongst 27 variables available from the drive, the torque related variables including motor current, Id, Iqcurrents and torque signals show changes due to mechanical misalignments. So only these variables are explored for developing and optimising detection schemes. Preliminary results obtained based on a motor gearbox system show that the torque feedback signal, in both the steady and transient operation, has the highest detection capability whereas the field current signal shows the least sensitivity to such faults.

Resumen
A new well-test model is presented for unsteady flow in multizone with crossflow layers in non-Newtonian polymer flooding reservoir by utilizing the supposition of semipermeable wall and combining it with the first approximation of layered stable flow rates, and the effects of wellbore storage and skin were considered in this model and proposed the analytical solutions in Laplace space for the cases of infinite-acting and bounded systems. Finally, the stable layer flow rates are provided for commingled system and crossflow system in late-time radial flow periods.

Resumen
Transient lumbar pain has been reported to occur frequently in patients having surgery using 5% hyperbaric lignocaine for spinal anaesthesia. The incidence of transient lumbar pain is highest with this agent in patients having surgery in the lithotomy position and in outpatients. The aim of this audit was to determine the incidence of transient lumbar pain in patients having minor surgery for the complications of peripheral vascular disease, a group of patients in whom short duration spinal anaesthesia is desirable. One hundred patients were audited prospectively. All patients had 5% hyperbaric lignocaine spinal anaesthesia and were followed up postoperatively utilizing a standardized questionnaire to determine the incidence of transient lumbar pain. The condition was found to occur in 4% of patients. This low incidence of transient lumbar pain justifies the continued use of 5% hyperbaric lignocaine for spinal anaesthesia in this group of patients.

Resumen
Spur gear contacts experience a number of time-varying contact parameters including the load, surface velocities, radii of curvature, and slide-to-roll ratio. It is very hard to obtain transient elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) solution of spur gears. In this study, a transient EHL model of involute spur gear tooth contacts is proposed. A full transient EHL solution of involute spur gear under impact load is obtained by utilizing the multigrid technique. The influences of impact load on the EHL of spur gear are analyzed in the paper. The numerical results show that the approach impact load has strong transient influence on the oil film thickness and pressure distribution between contact zones. The impact load may lead to instantaneous lubrication film deterioration between contact teeth of involute spur gears.

Resumen
ABSTRACT The amount of observational data produced by time-domain astronomy is exponentially increasing. Human inspection alone is not an effective way to identify genuine transients from the data. An automatic real-bogus classifier is needed and machine learning techniques are commonly used to achieve this goal. Building a training set with a sufficiently large number of verified transients is challenging, due to the requirement of human verification. We present an approach for creating a training set by using all detections in the science images to be the sample of real detections and all detections in the difference images, which are generated by the process of difference imaging to detect transients, to be the samples of bogus detections. This strategy effectively minimizes the labour involved in the data labelling for supervised machine learning methods. We demonstrate the utility of the training set by using it to train several classifiers utilizing as the feature representation the normalized pixel values in 21 × 21 pixel stamps centred at the detection position, observed with the Gravitational-wave Optical Transient Observer (GOTO) prototype. The real-bogus classifier trained with this strategy can provide up to $95{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$ prediction accuracy on the real detections at a false alarm rate of $1{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$.

Resumen
A new transient spectrum detection method with high time resolution based on area CCD is proposed. By reforming and mending working sequence of CCD, utilizing principle of frame restore, linear spectrum detection with high time resolution was achieved. This method improves frame rate and time resolution of CCD greatly. LED impulse light experiment is performed to demonstrate feasibility of the method. Experiment results show that this transient spectrum acquisition method based on area CCD is efficacious, detection frame rate can be as high as 10Mfps. Time resolution is less than 100ns, and can be able to image 2048 times continuously. The experiment is of importance to expand application of CCD in the transient spectrum detection area.

Resumen
An experimental investigation of the sedimentation of monodisperse colloidal silica spheres with grafted octadecyl chains with three different interaction potentials is presented. Small particles (0.27 μm) behaved as hard spheres in cyclohexane, but larger ones (0.60 and 0.94 μm) are weakly flocculated by van der Waals attractions. The smallest particles (0.08 μm) in hexadecane are strongly flocculated by attractions between the octadecyl layers. A medical computer tomography (CT) scanner provided an accurate and absolute density measurement without disrupting the process. For the hard spheres and the weakly flocculated systems, the kinetics of sedimentation for the dispersed phase could readily be predicted utilizing the flux curve. For flocculated networks, we found a power-law relationship between compressive yield stresses and solids fractions comparable with other experimental systems.

Resumen
Abstract Diabetic retinopathy (DR), an incurable eye disease, is a common complication of diabetes mellitus and the leading cause of blindness amongst working age adults. Prolonged high glucose levels damage retinal blood vessels leading to hemorrhages, ischemia and ultimately vision loss. Microglia, the resident macrophages of the central nervous system, are rapidly activated and respond to transient hyperglycemia, and reset the homeostatic threshold of the retina. As hyperglycemia persists, capillary damage occurs resulting in serum proteins and DAMPs from the periphery leaking into the retina perpetuating microgliosis, pro-inflammatory cytokine production and vascular damage that correlates with neuronal loss. Therefore, we transiently depleted microglia to determine the mechanism by which resident retinal macrophages regulate neuronal and vascular damage at early stages of diabetes. We hypothesize that transient depletion of CX3CR1CreER:R26iDTR microglia during the course of disease when microglia receive the early-stage environmental cues of retinal inflammation due to hyperglycemia will induce neuroprotective cues. Utilizing a genetic model to express diphtheria toxin receptor under the tamoxifen inducible CX3CR1-promoter, microglia become susceptible to the effects of diphtheria toxin. Our findings revealed that transient depletion of microglia induced neuroprotective cues to upregulate TUJ1+ neurons and ameliorate vascular damage in the diabetic retina. In conclusion these studies suggest that early transient microglia depletion is neuroprotective by inducing the proliferation of a homeostatic microglia cell population that induce axonal regeneration of TUJ1+ neurons and vascular repair.
