Tashkandy, Anas Saleh. "Cooperation among university libraries in the Gulf Cooperation Council countries : proposals for effective cooperative programmes". Thesis, Loughborough University, 1992. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/7206.

Texto completo
Resumen
The aim of this research is to examine the current situation of university libraries in the GCC countries identifying the problems and difficulties being faced by them and suggest means and ways by which an effective library cooperation may solve these problems. A general description of library cooperation is given, including that in developing countries and in the Arab world. Apart from literature sources the material for this research was obtained by questionnaire, personal visits to university libraries and some related research institutions in the countries concerned and by some personal observations and experience. The development of library and information services in general in the CCC countries is examined, but particularly various features of university libraries, from administration to user services. University library resources, technical services, and existing cooperative activities are also discussed in detail. There are some major issues which are related to library cooperation such as financial resources, adequacy of library collections, collection development practices, uniform standards of technical processing of library materials, availability of bibliographical apparatus and experienced professional manpower. The analysis of these issues brought out factors which should motivate individual libraries to engage in a library cooperation and resource sharing network. There is no practical or well organised resource sharing programme among university libraries in the GCC countries, even the existing marginal activities are not satisfactory to all university libraries concerned. This is mainly due to the absence of a well organised central agency which should take the lead to implement a well developed cooperative model for library cooperation in the region. The various professional meetings which have been organised at a regional level emphasised the importance of establishing effective cooperative links among university libraries in the Gulf region, but little implementation of these proposals have resulted so far. With the current political situation in the Gulf region and with the limitation on financial resources, the need for effective library cooperation is emphasised now more than ever before. Therefore, this research makes some practical recommendations emphasising the need for a central agency responsible for library cooperation programmes and proposing a model for an effective resource sharing network among university libraries in the GCC countries in the hope of improving the existing situation.

Resumen

The study examines the relationship of these institutions with the University of Botswana within the affiliation system. The issues that were investigated were related to the affiliation system in general, and whether it was beneficial to both the University of Botswana and the affiliated institutions. It was found from the study that the relationship is a symbiotic one. Furthermore, the study looked into the articulation of the programmes of the affiliated institutions with those of the University of Botswana. The issue of the level at which diplomates from the Affiliated Institutions join a degree programme at the University of Botswana was also discussed. The current system is that after three years of doing a diploma at an affiliated institution, the diplomate will join a degree programme at the University of Botswana at year two with a diploma that was awarded by the University of Botswana. As a result the diplomate will spend three more years on the degree programme. Moreover, the issue of semesterising the affiliated institutions&rsquo
programmes, like those of the University of Botswana, was also looked into. Another issue considered was that of monitoring Quality Assurance in the affiliated institutions by the University of Botswana.

Tatsumoto, Mika. "Perceived effects of peer cooperation on motivation in the Japanese university EFL classroom". Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2011. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/1758/.

Texto completo
Resumen
The main aim of this study was to explore whether or not low achievers in EFL at a Japanese university perceive peer cooperation in cooperative learning contexts to be effective in improving their levels of expectancy, motivation and ultimate attainment in the L2. The main findings in this study pertain to the relationship between peer cooperation and L2 classroom motivation. The relationship involved several perceived routes which mainly indicated that the learners felt that peer cooperation had had a positive influence on their levels of motivation. The perceived routes linking peer cooperation to motivation can be roughly divided into two types; 1) the two routes which were mainly focused on in this study: through expectancy alone or a combination of levels of English and expectancy; and 2) other routes identified during the course of the study: through group cohesion and/or cohesion-generated factors (a sense of responsibility for their peers and having fun in class) or through factors related to status ordering or hierarchy among students (feelings of superiority/inferiority to their peers).

Resumen
This thesis explores the identity formation of three EFL pre-service teachers during their teaching practicum in a school-university partnership school in Mainland China. Drawing on the sociocultural perspective, learning-to-teach is conceptualized as student teachers participating in and becoming a member of the communities of practice (Wenger, 1998) which consist of boundary-crossing members from both activity systems of the university and the school (Engestrom, 1987, 1999, 2001). Following a poststructural perspective, the student teachers’ learning-to-teach is also conceptualized as a process of “arguing for” (MacLure, 1993) their professional identities under dominant social discourses. Foucault’s (1983, 1985) concept of ethical identity formation elaborated into a framework of four ethico-political dimensions for doing teacher identity (Clarke, 2009) is adopted to further analysethe interactions between social structure and individual identity transformation. An ethnographic qualitative case study approach was adopted. Data collection methods included ethnographic observations of classroom interactions, focus group discussions and routine school activities, semi-structured interviews of student teachers and mentors, and collectioin of documents such as university teaching practicum documents, lesson plans, reflective diaries and newsletters. Both “content analysis” and “modified analytic induction” (Bogdan & Biklen, 2007; Merriam, 1998; Patton, 2002) were adopted to conduct within-case and cross-case data analysis. The multi-method approach allowed the researcher to collect and interpret data from both holistic and in-depth research perspectives which also enabled triangulations during data analysis. The analysis indicated that historical, cultural, political and economic forces intertwined and formed general social discourses. Their influences permeated into the discourses of both the university and the school activity systems. Due to the contradictory discourses of ELT education between the two institutions, the boundary-crossing learning-to-teach activities were replete with tensions, asymmetrical power relationships, and interpersonal conflicts, which combined to become driving forces for the different transformations of the three student teachers’ identities within the school-university partnership activity system as a global community of practice (COP). Due to different individual backgrounds, inner tensions and interpersonal conflicts within the COP, the student teachers led dissimilar legitimate peripheral participation (Lave & Wenger, 1991)trajectories through identifying themselves with different local sub-cops (T-cop and S-cop) in various modes of belonging. Under the domination of contradictory institutional discourses, the student teachers exercised their creative agencies and managed to find the “spaces” for their own freedom of self-formation via four ethico-political dimensions. Through critical reflection on the relation between the care of self and the care of others, the student teachers clarified, readjusted and reinforced their telos which is part and parcel of the ongoing interactions among the four ethico-political aspects of teacher identity. Based on the contradictions identified in this research, a critical and ethical pedagogy framework for EFL teacher education was conceptualized for ELT and teacher education programmes. This thesis also serves as an attempt to address teacher identity issues from the integrated perspectives of both sociocultural and poststructural approaches (Morgan, 2007) and to introduce the concept of ethico-politics of teacher identity to EFL teacher education.

Furedi, Andrew Leo. "Determining Leverage Points: A Program Design for a University/K12 Partnership". Digital Commons at Loyola Marymount University and Loyola Law School, 2009. https://digitalcommons.lmu.edu/etd/551.

Texto completo
Resumen
After a review of K12-University partnership models, research into the current local and national education reform context, and an in-depth analysis of contextual factors in the launching of an initiative, the author proposed a program design for K12-University partnerships that included five essential components necessary for successful implementation. These components, also termed leverage points, were: clarity of the problem, outcome planning, a theory of change, clear stakeholder enrollment and commitment, and flexibility. Actively acknowledging and factoring in the fluid nature of public education initiatives, the author framed this program design within that of the emergence principle of complexity theory, which drove the rationale for flexibility in the model. The study then turned to a deep review of the successes and lessons learned from a K12/University partnership that was launched without the benefit of this program design. Finally, the study analyzed this specific K12/University partnership through the lens of the five essential components and made recommendations about the efficacy of this specific model. In the current national climate of declining resources and the need for more effective and innovative partnerships in the K12 and University settings, this program design offered a roadmap for local partnerships throughout the country to positively impact the student success.

Texto completo
Resumen
The persistent paucity of endowment monies and other funds and an attempt to minimize operating costs have led to a series of interinstitutional cooperative efforts between many historically black colleges in Texas and other institutions of higher learning. The Texas Association of Developing Colleges (TADC) is a multi-service consortium composed of Huston-Tillotson College, Jarvis Christian College, Paul Quinn College, Texas College, and Wiley College which are privately supported and church-related liberal arts colleges. The primary focus of the TADC is interinstitutional cooperation. Some general and specific problems and weaknesses endemic to many small private colleges, especially to small black private colleges, have been identified through analyses, interpretations, and inferences from a variety of data sources. The potential opportunity and success for strengthening these colleges and for solving some of their problems through self-effort, through additional support from external, nongovernmental sources, and through meaningful forms of interinstitutional cooperation are discussed and appear to be encouraging. Interinstitutional cooperation is already acceptable and functional among these five colleges through their participation in the Texas Association of Developing Colleges, and it is apparent that these five colleges, individually and collectively, have had commendable successes in meeting many of their goals and objectives through such arrangements. Basically, the recommendations made in this study call for significant forms and types of interinstitutional cooperation among these colleges in a formalized manner under the aegis of the Texas Association of Developing Colleges.

Resumen
Thesis (MTech (Business Administration))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2018.
Service delivery is one of the most important aspects of the Higher Education sector not only when dealing with international students. It is imperative that higher education institutions should monitor and evaluate its administrative and academic employees. There is a need for a good performance system, which includes standards that define whether staff performances have merits or shortcomings. This will encourage staff to be proficient in their work environment. It is also important to equip staff with service delivery training. This research project examines staff and students’ experiences of internationalisation at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology. The researcher identified problems that international students encountered at CPUT, subsequently made recommendations, which deal with how to improve CPUT services to international students. The researcher undertook a quantitative research approach by administering a closed-ended questionnaire, which was compiled by a registered statistician. The study found that most of the participants did not understand or were not aware of internationalisation at CPUT. A majority of the participants did not understand their role when it came to assisting international students. They perceived that whatever international students required had to be sought from the international office. They understood their role within CPUT in terms of meeting the university’s objectives, as being that, which is set out in the university’s Vision and Mission.

The increase of international competitiveness, the speed of change in competitive environments and the emergence of the knowledge economy, require significant changes in the speed of innovation in Brazilian companies. The great challenge for companies is to leave the traditional model of development of products and services to an open innovation model involving new management models and partnerships with institutions of Science and Technology (ICT´s). The universities, which until then were seen mainly as a source of knowledge and human resources, are now directing their skills for developing technology. This university-industry cooperation is a complex dynamic and is the result of a number of factors, one of them the training of corporate employees. This requires a greater commitment of the company with the education and development of these to acquire a sustainable competitive advantage. In this environment we have an important tool that are corporate universities, which emerged in Brazil in 1998 in order to promote continuing education for employees of companies seeking to increase competitiveness. So we made a descriptive qualitative research study with multiple cases method through in-depth interviews being studied three Brazilian corporate universities, Petrobras University (UP), the Algar University (UniAlgar), and Bematech University (UB). The results generated conclusions about (a) the link between corporate universities of Petrobras, Algar e Bematech, and the areas of R & D & I of their respective companies, (b) the main current and future challenges of corporate universities analyzed, (c) the stage of cooperation between corporate universities and ICT\'s, (d) the characteristics of corporate universities that influence R&D&I and university-industry cooperation, which eventually were basis for the propose of (e) a model for the Corporate University management of R & D & I to intensify the processes in cooperation University - Company. The main results point to an important link between the UC\'s and intensification of R&D&I processes on training and qualification of personnel who develop or may develop R&D&I, moreover, has, by its characteristic educator, an important participation in the process of university-industry cooperation. Thus the model can help organizations develop UC\'s to make a decisive role in achieving its strategic challenges.

Resumen
The aim of this study is to problematise the social practice of school-university collaboration in the context of assessment reform in Hong Kong English Language teaching. Hong Kong’s education system has been undergoing major reforms since 1997 and collaboration between tertiary institutions and schools has been negotiated in education policy discourse as a way to improve teaching and learning. In the key policy documents shaping professional development practices for Hong Kong teachers, school-university collaboration is neatly packaged as achievable and unproblematic. In reality, however, school-university collaboration is frequently characterised by tensions and complexities. The objective of this research is to critically examine how particular worldviews about school-university collaboration and partnership are negotiated, reproduced and/or contested in one particular sociocultural context, that of secondary English language teaching in Hong Kong. Drawing on the work of Michel Foucault and the concepts of discourse propounded by Norman Fairclough, a theoretical framework was constructed to examine how collaborative practices in this case study were constituted through discourse. Textual data were collected from the case study. Critical discourse analysis (CDA) was used to examine how teacher-researchers and university facilitators co-constructed and negotiated systems of beliefs and knowledge, interpersonal relations and intrapersonal subjectivity whilst engaged in collaborative action research (CAR). The analysis of the textual data (emails, interviews, transcripts of face-to-face meetings) revealed collaborative practices were mediated through language (verbal and non-verbal). The study also indicates that the collaboration enacted in this case study was highly complex and ambiguous because the practice was predominantly shaped by social, political, ideological and pragmatic factors in the wider sociocultural context, including changes in the assessment of speaking skills of senior secondary students in the English language education curriculum. The discourse of collaboration was thus problematised to identify how all these factors shaped the construction of beliefs, interpersonal relations and identity in the practice of collaborative action research. The study concludes with an examination of the contribution that critical discourse analysis research can make in problematising the practice of school-university collaboration, and how this knowledge may be able to improve the planning and facilitation of future practices. While the existing literature about collaborative action research provides educators with information on how it is implemented in a Western sociocultural context, there are fewer studies which examine the notion of school-university collaboration in a more critical light, for example, by exploring how systemic and contextual factors in society play a significant role in shaping and constraining what people do through collaboration. This case study offers an insight into the complexities of constructing collaboration between two different institutional cultures in a non-Western sociocultural setting. The implications for policy, professional development and research in teacher education are also highlighted. Abstract Universities in Taiwan are searching proactively the upgrading measures so as to alleviate the pressure of higher education deregulation and shrinkage of educational resources. Previous western researches demonstrated that industry-university collaboration not only expedites industrial R&D and innovation but also enhances university’s competitiveness. We find from literature review that American university-industry collaboration emphasize more on the institutional operation in universities. Empirical evidences prove that well managed governmental funding induces private R&D investment and enhance R&D performance. Intermediary institutions are more employed to facilitate university-industry collaboration in Germany and the UK. Thus, this research is aimed at researching on the influences of university-industry collaboration based on its types, scales, and university types. Empirical results show there is positive correlation between a university’s ranking and its university-industry collaboration activities. Universities have better performance than their technological university and technological institute counterparts in both project numbers and scales. Synthesizing empirical results, we demonstrate positive correlation in university-industry collaboration and university competitiveness in Taiwan. Relevant suggestions are discussed in conclusion. The evolution of the interaction between industry and university has followed the demand of industrial development. The economic development in Taiwan over the past 60 years, has witnessed different stages from agricultural economy, industrial economy to knowledge economy; therefore, the industrial management, school education and the cooperative model between industry and university have also varied along the economic development. In addition, the government in Taiwan has been actively fostering the industry university cooperation and with fruitful achievement. However, there is no such policy in the world that can perfectly plan in every detail. Every successful policy must reform itself with the evolution of time. In this paper, I observe the industry - university cooperation from another perspective and look for the possibilities of further improvement on the cooperation. The primary focus of this study is on the result analysis among several universities that have programs in the field of industry university cooperation. I have examined the cooperation cases between technological universities and the National Science Council of Executive Yuan in order to find out the strength and weakness in each case. In the mean time, I have surveyed the result of industry university cooperation programs in three universities: National Taiwan University of science and technology, National yunlin University of science and technology; Kun Shan University. As for those technological universities and colleges that are interested in establishing industry-university cooperation programs, I have offered some advice and proposed points for attention.

This study is based on the relevant U.S. industry-university cooperation bills and literature reviews to realize the circumstances when U.S. government face the shift of industry environment, the legislation of the law as well as the evolution of American industry-university cooperation process. This study generalizes and collects the policies and processes of technology transfers of the U.S. industry- university cooperation in the light of research object. There are six steps in the process of industry-university cooperation of the U.S. universities: proposal development, negotiation and acceptance, award initiation and project-task-award setup, project monitoring, sub-awards as well as closeout. The policies of industry-university cooperation are grouped into six categories: type of project plan identified funding, project planning and personnel management, project plan and personnel costs, project planning funding, project planning and implementation of accounting write-off costs as well as academic and moral ethics. The processes of technology transfer are considered eight steps, including communicating with office of technology license, making a disclosure, assess invention, protecting invention, marketing innovation, negotiating with potential licensees, license or start-up company, and post-agreement services. Technology transfer policies are invention and property rights policy, patent policy, copyright policy, and material transfer agreements.

Resumen
Programming mobile robots (mobots) is a difficult task under the best of circumstances. The inherent complexity of the hardware coupled with influences from the real, physical world conspires to create an environment ill-suited to rapid design and implementation of robust, correct mobot programs. Programming teams of mobots further adds to the complexity of the problem, incorporating concepts of distributed computing such as communication and synchronization. This research presents a novel method for programming such teams of mobots based on the notion of dynamic teams, which allows for high-level task specifications to mirror the structure of the task at hand. This method is applicable to distributed programming in general. The implementation of this method permits many disparate sorts of cooperative programs to be constructed, realized on real, physical mobots as a software architecture, each layer of which provides successive abstraction from the specialized robotic hardware. The distributive, concurrent aspects of the method are rigorously described in Milner's pi-calculus, allowing static, formal analysis of cooperative programs
