Resumen

Tourism is one of the largest U.S. industries, serving millions of international and domestic tourists yearly. Tourists visit the U.S. to see natural wonders, cities, historic landmarks, and entertainment venues. Americans seek similar attractions as well as recreation and vacation areas. Tourism competes in the global market, so it is important to understand current trends in the U.S. travel industry. Therefore, this article offers insight into important trends and suggests strategies for policy makers involved in the travel and tourism industry.

Resumen

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the attractiveness of a global tourism destination when the country of that destination and the country that provides the source market are in a situation of political and economic conflict. In this study, the USA is the vacation destination, and Russia is the tourism generating region. Design/methodology/approach In May 2015, 18 Russian tourists from a large regional urban center participated in qualitative semi-structured interviews. The interviews took place in the situational context of strained bilateral relations between the USA and Russia over events in Ukraine, Crimea, and Donbass, as well as economic sanctions that had been in effect for almost a year at the time of the interviews. Findings Respondents expressed substantial interest in vacationing in the USA despite their strong disagreement with USA international policies. While domestic tourism offerings were evaluated as inferior to those of other international destinations, patriotic sentiments with respect to domestic tourism were registered. Practical implications Brand USA is still very attractive to the potential tourists, especially such components as major cities, entertainment, oceans, beaches and resorts, as well as the vastness of its national parks. The absence of information with respect to travel to USA was noticed by all respondents. Originality/value The study is conducted in a situation of ongoing conflict between the two countries and explores how the feelings of animosity toward the USA influence the desire of Russian tourists to vacation in the USA.

A Review of: Wang, X., Cui, Y., & Xu, S. (2018). Evaluating the impact of web-scale discovery services on scholarly content seeking. The Journal of Academic Librarianship, 44(5), 545-552. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.acalib.2018.05.010 Abstract Objective – To examine trends in digital object identifier (DOI) web referrals and explore the referring domains, especially those originating from web-scale discovery systems like ProQuest’s Summon and Primo. Design – Log analysis and web traffic analysis. Setting – CrossRef, a web server that connects DOIs to the corresponding articles’ landing pages. Subjects – Web traffic that passed through CrossRef between 2011 and 2016. Methods – The researchers collected data from CrossRef using a web tool called Chronograph. The data captured information about the websites users were on when they requested a DOI (called the referrer) and about the time and date of each request. The researchers used time series analysis to discover longitudinal patterns in the data. Annual, monthly, and weekly trends were also examined with a seasonal adjustment model, a seasonal trend decomposition, and log transformation. They also isolated traffic from four institutions in Australia, Japan, Sweden, and the United States of America to determine if overall seasonal patterns were reflected locally. ProQuest websites were of particular interest to the researchers because they determined that it had the highest market share of discovery services. Much of the analysis focused on ProQuest’s serialsolutions.com, exlibrisgroup.com, and proquest.com website domains. Main Results – ProQuest servers sent over 25 million DOI referrals through CrossRef – more than either Web of Knowledge (n=24.47 million) or Google (n=15.38 million). Referral traffic grew over the period with the sharpest growth rate occurring between 2011 and 2012. Of ProQuest’s domains, serialsolutions.com (Summon) had more traffic and more growth over the observation period than exlibrisgroup.com (Primo). In all of the years studied, the busiest months were September to November and January to March, while June to August and December were low points. Seasonal fluctuations were attributed to university vacation schedules as demonstrated in the traffic patterns of four ProQuest-subscribing institutions. Weekly trend analysis showed that Monday to Thursday had consistently heavy referral traffic. Of the remaining days, the fewest referrals were observed on Saturdays. Conclusion – DOI referrer traffic is closely tied to the university calendar. Library discovery products are used more frequently to access DOIs than Google.

Resumen

Prior to the landmark Supreme Court decision of June 1963, which banned public prayer from the public schools, Christian religious education was often a routine part of the overt instruction provided by the American public school system. However, in the wake of that legal milestone, even though instruction in the Judeo-Christian interpretation of religious history continued to be taught covertly, American churches began relying more heavily on providing Christian religious education. This article briefly presents Christianity’s contemporary status in the United States and reviews such religious education methods as Sunday school, vacation Bible school, Christian youth groups, catechism, private Christian schools, Youth Sunday, and children’s sermons. The survey concludes with a look at the growing interface between such education and the lessons of psychology as well as training and certifying Christian religious educators.

Resumen

Vigorous legislative activity is taking place regarding paid sick leave in the United States. Most existing research measures paid sick days autonomously without also considering other benefits such as flexible work and paid vacation. This descriptive study of a nationally representative sample of 4428 adult male workers finds 77.1% of workers have a combination of paid sick leave, flexible work, and vacation, while only 16.8% have just one of the three benefits. Future research should examine the correlates of combined benefit packages in terms of workers’ physical, emotional and financial health and wellbeing. Nationally representative data collection efforts should refine the measurement of workplace benefit variable to allow for these comparisons.

In Italy, Toscana virus is the most common cause of meningitis from May to October. Though only a few cases have been reported in U.S. travelers returning from Europe, most cases are likely unrecognized due to lack of familiarity with the disease. Here, we describe the case of an 82-year-old man presenting with fever, profound weakness, and hearing loss after returning to the United States following a 2-week summertime vacation in southern Italy who was ultimately diagnosed with Toscana virus encephalitis. This case should alert clinicians to the possibility of Toscana virus infection in returning travelers and provides information on how to obtain testing if Toscana virus is suspected.

He scheduled to spend his vacation in Bali with his family for five days from June 23rd to 28th. Before the group are heading to Yogyakarta. Related to the security, Hundreds of police and TNI officers stand guard along the road as far as 40 km to secure the departure of Barack Obama's entourage to Yogyakarta. there was no airport closure when Obama's plane took off. However, he said there was indeed a priority given for the plane to take off, both on arrival and departure of the entourage.

Resumen

The chosen currency regime places a state within the international economic order. Therefore, the exchange rate is a key to creating an internal financial system and opening it up to foreign participants. In this paper we would like to show the differences between China and the USA and examine their impact on potential changes on the distribution of power in the international system. We will also try to prove that this field is a missing link in preventing the final launching of a symmetrical bipolar system which will finally force China to accept the rules of a Washington Consensus instead of following its own patterns. The case study method will be used in order to compare market data and assess the role of currencies for the given model.

Resumen

The interconnectedness of markets is a useful measure of risk and therefore an indicator of economic stability. In this paper, the interconnectedness among housing markets in different metropolitan areas was analyzed. Interconnectedness between the housing market and other markets were also calculated. In regional studies, West Coast housing markets were found to be the most influential on housing markets elsewhere. Interestingly, overall connectedness across regions steadily increased prior to the subprime mortgage crisis, representing a systematic risk increase. When analyzing diverse markets in relation to the housing market, the stock market was found to have the highest interconnectedness, suggesting that financial health of stock market depend on financial health of housing market. The increased systematic risk due to high housing market interconnectedness coupled with the interdependence between the stock market and the housing market were key indicators of the subprime mortgage crisis. Such measures should be monitored in the future to avoid a similar economic disaster.

This paper specifies characteristics of language as a resource and demonstrates that it is possible from the perspective of economics to make a case for government involvement in foreign language learning and maintenance of skills in the U.S.A. Market solutions based on private incentives to learn and maintain language skills alone fail to provide nationally optimal solutions to international communication needs. What is required is an alternative system which combines market with non-market incentives to foreign language learning and use.

Resumen

This paper examines the history of internal migration in the United States since the 1980s. By most measures, internal migration in the United States is at a 30-year low. The widespread decline in migration rates across a large number of subpopulations suggests that broad-based economic forces are likely responsible for the decrease. An obvious question is the extent to which the recent housing market contraction and the recession may have caused this downward trend in migration: after all, relocation activity often involves both housing market activity and changes in employment. However, we find relatively small roles for both of these cyclical factors. While we will suggest a few other possible explanations for the recent decrease in migration, the puzzle remains. Finally, we compare U.S. migration to other developed countries. Despite the steady decline in U.S. migration, the commonly held belief that Americans are more mobile than their European counterparts still appears to hold true.

Resumen

Objective The objective of this article is to determine the monthly variation of emergency department (ED) visits for pediatric headache. We hypothesized youth have increased headache-related ED visits in the months associated with school attendance. Methods Using a United States representative sample of ED visits in the National Hospital Ambulatory Medical Care Survey from 1997 to 2009, we estimated number of visits associated with ICD-9 codes related to headache, migraine, status migrainosus, or tension-type headache in 5- to 18-year-olds. Age-stratified multivariate models are presented for month of visit (July as reference). Results There was a national estimate of 250,000 ED visits annually related to headache (2.1% of total visits) in 5- to 18-year-olds. In 5- to 11-year-olds, the adjusted rate of headache-related visits was lower in April (OR 0.42, 95% CI 0.20, 0.88). In 12- to 18-year-olds, there were higher rates in January (OR 1.92, 95% CI 1.16, 3.14) and September (OR 1.64, 95% CI 1.06, 2.55). Conclusions In adolescents we found higher ED utilization in January and September, the same months associated with school return from vacation for a majority of children nationally. No significant reduction in the summer suggests that school itself is not the issue, but rather changes in daily lifestyle and transitions.

Resumen

Purpose The purpose of this study was to quantify relationships between stuttering and labor market outcomes, determine if outcomes differ by gender, and explain the earnings difference between people who stutter and people who do not stutter. Method Survey and interview data were obtained from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health. Of the 13,564 respondents who completed 4 waves of surveys over 14 years and answered questions about stuttering, 261 people indicated that they stutter. Regression analysis, propensity score matching, and Blinder–Oaxaca decomposition were used. Results After controlling for numerous variables related to demographics and comorbidity, the deficit in earnings associated with stuttering exceeded $7,000. Differences in observable characteristics between people who stutter and people who do not stutter (e.g., education, occupation, self-perception, hours worked) accounted for most of the earnings gap for males but relatively little for females. Females who stutter were also 23% more likely to be underemployed than females who do not stutter. Conclusions Stuttering was associated with reduced earnings and other gender-specific disadvantages in the labor market. Preliminary evidence indicates that discrimination may have contributed to the earnings gap associated with stuttering, particularly for females.

The United States, dominating the world's energy markets as a producer and consumer is sensitive to changes in this market and intends to influence the development of global energy policy. Supply will be increased by nations such as Venezuela, Indonesia and perhaps in the future a United Yemen and the Commonwealth of Independent States, moving to freer market economies which will allow investment opportunities previously inaccessible to foreign companies. Although world energy demand will grow little of this will be in the US where, under the National Energy Strategy, comprehensive measures are being introduced to improve energy efficiency. The US energy security will be further improved by such measures as diversification of supply, larger domestic production and increasing interdependence between suppliers, traders and consumers.

Long-term care expenditures constitute one of the largest uninsured financial risks facing the elderly in the United States and thus play a central role in determining the retirement security of elderly Americans. In this essay, we begin by providing some background on the nature and extent of long-term care expenditures and insurance against those expenditures, emphasizing in particular the large and variable nature of the expenditures and the extreme paucity of private insurance coverage. We then provide some detail on the nature of the private long-term care insurance market and the available evidence on the reasons for its small size, including private market imperfections and factors that limit the demand for such insurance. We highlight how the availability of public long-term care insurance through Medicaid is an important factor suppressing the market for private long-term care insurance. In the final section, we describe and discuss recent long-term care insurance public policy initiatives at both the state and federal level.

Agricultural sector in Indonesia contributes greatly to employment, foreign exchange earners, and economic growth. In the export sector, shrimp commodities have the largest portion and become Indonesia's leading commodities. However, Indonesia still cannot become a leader in the world's largest shrimp exporter and only occupies the fourth position of the world's shrimp exporter. There were two goals in the research. First, it was to determine the position of the competitiveness of Indonesian shrimp commodity exports compared to other exporting countries in the United States market. Second, it determined the factors that affected the competitiveness of shrimp exports commodity and made business strategy recommendations for Indonesian shrimp commodities. The research used panel data with a cross-section of seven countries and time series from 2001 to 2017. The result shows that Indonesia has a competitive advantage in the United States market. However, Indonesia must be wary of Ecuador with a higher Revealed Comparative Advantage (RCA) Value and India, the lead exporter in the United States Market. The factors that affect the competitiveness of shrimp exports are Gross Domestic Product (GDP), population, economic distance, and exchange rate of shrimp exporting countries against the US Dollar. Last, the right business strategy for Indonesia is to perform market penetration, market development, and product development strategies.

This paper is mainly divided into four parts, including an introduction, a literature review, the main body, and the conclusion. The main research direction is how new alcohol brands can be advertised and promoted under the existing difficulties in the market. There are a lot of difficulties in the U.S. alcohol market these days. On the one hand, there are many alcohol brands that have been in operation for many years, and they have a wide range of users, with relatively stable sales volume and reputation. On the other hand, the whole alcohol market is in a depressed state due to the impact of the Covid-19. In the wake of the pandemic, a decline in social interaction and increasing health concerns have contributed to a decrease in the need of alcoholic products. With technical developments, the way of information exposure is more diversified than before. Online promotion is easier to attract young people's attention in a short time. By comparison, the traditional promotion method focusing on offline is no longer enough to meet the needs of a new brand entering the market. Hence, this paper explains in detail about the problems in the alcohol market, several factors that are causing them and possible solutions and modes of campaigns.

Between the 1957 and 1983 labor market entry cohorts, median lifetime earnings declined by 10–19 percent for men and increased by 22–33 percent for women, albeit relative to very low median lifetime earnings for the early cohorts. The difference between newer and older cohorts comes from differences in median earnings at the time of labor market entry. Inequality in lifetime earnings has increased significantly within each gender group, but the closing lifetime gender gap has kept overall lifetime inequality flat. The increase among men is largely attributable to subsequent cohorts entering the labor market with progressively higher levels of inequality. (JEL D15, J16, J31, J32)

Resumen

Used cars are an essential part of the automobile market. With the change in people's car buying concept and increased consumer demand for cars, its market has become increasingly active. In this paper, we analyzed the United States used car market data to understand how factors like car brand, owner type, location, and mileage affect the price of used cars. We find that Asian brands account for a more significant proportion of the market. Comparing Honda and Toyota in Japanese cars, we assume that Toyota is relatively more cost-effective than Honda. We also identify several major sales hubs in the United States, such as New York and Massachusetts on the east coast, California on the West Coast, and Florida on the south. This paper thus provides used-car market potential consumers and existing sellers with price and location references.
