Resumen
In this paper, a new method of “fuzzy identification” is proposed for circumstances in which an exact match of an epigraphic written word with later attested forms is not possible (for example, because the word has been lost from the language). Based on our increasingly sophisticated understanding of early Chinese morphological patterns and word families, it is sometimes possible to achieve an approximate understanding of pronunciation and meaning in the absence of a precise identification. As an illustration of this approach, I consider the oracle-bone graph as it appears in a famous eclipse inscription. This graph has been identified as 斲 zhuó and 剅 dōu (among others). I argue that any such identification is overly precise. A fuzzy identification, as a member of the word family based on root *tok with meaning ‘cut, chop’, is a more accurate reflection of the state of our knowledge and provides greater insight into the possible pronunciations and range of meaning and function of the word.

Resumen
Abstract The past 30 years of reading research has confirmed the importance of bottom-up processing. Rather than a psycholinguistic guessing game (Goodman, 1967), reading is dependent on rapid, accurate recognition of written forms. In fluent first language (L1) readers, this is seen in the automatic activation of a word’s phonological form, impacting lexical processing (Perfetti & Bell, 1991; Rayner, Sereno, Lesch & Pollatsek, 1995). Although the influence of phonological form is well established, less clear is the extent to which readers are sensitive to the possible pronunciations of a word (Lesch & Pollatsek, 1998), derived from the varying consistency of grapheme-to-phoneme correspondences (GPCs) (e.g., although ‘great’ has only one pronunciation, [ɡɹeɪt], the grapheme <ea> within it has multiple possible pronunciations: [i] in [plit] ‘pleat’, [ɛ] in [bɹɛθ] ‘breath’; Parkin, 1982). Further, little is known about non-native readers’ sensitivity to such characteristics. Non-native readers process text differently from L1 readers (Koda & Zehler, 2008; McBride-Chang, Bialystok, Chong & Li, 2004), with implications for understanding L2 reading comprehension (Rayner, Chace, Slattery & Ashby, 2006). The goal of this study was thus to determine whether native and non-native readers are sensitive to the consistency of a word’s component GPCs during lexical processing and to compare this sensitivity among readers from different L1s.

Resumen
Aphasia is a language disorder caused by brain damage, resulting in difficulties with speaking, understanding, reading, and writing. This study focuses on addressing challenges faced by local therapists in aphasia treatment. Through an ethnographic study involving observations and interviews, critical issues in current technological solutions for aphasia treatment were identified. These issues include the lack of feedback during patient training, limited localized content, repetitive materials, and a lack of options for conversational speech training. In our study, we tried to address one of these issues concerning automatic evaluation of patient speech pronunciation. By utilizing public datasets and local patient data, we developed a system that provides accurate pronunciation scores and personalized feedback, assisting therapists in guiding patient progress. The system supports customized pronunciations, including local accents and dialects. The system is designed for multiple platforms, ensuring accessibility, and can be extended to involve speech therapists to enhance its capabilities. This study emphasizes the importance of integrating research insights with clinical practice, empowering therapists, and enhancing the quality of aphasia treatment.

Resumen
The practice of accurate pronunciation of the Qur'anic harf, lengths, idgams, etc., is certainly a matter of skill in tilavet, and there is no skill without systematic work and practice. The practical, sound-related aspect of reciting the Qur'an is only one segment of Tajweed, i.e. its artistic dimension. However, when we say 'ilm et-tajweed', we refer to the Qur'anic science, which, like any other science, has its own theory, its subject of study, its terminology and methodology. Therefore, it is erroneous to perceive the science of Tajweed only as melodic reciting of the Qur'anic text, or to limit it to practicing the pronunciation of the Qur'anic words and examining the application of the Tajweed rules. Even more debatable is the issue of treating the term Tajweed when related to the term Qira’at. Given the difficulty in understanding the subject matter of the study of Tajweed and Qira’at and the lack of understanding of the basic terminological concepts of these two Qur'anic disciplines, this paper aims at shedding some light on these issues.

Resumen
This study examines the segmentation and pronunciation accuracy of the alveodental phoneme thāʾ [tˤ] in Arabic based on students' reading tests. By employing a qualitative descriptive method with a content analysis design, the research seeks to obtain detailed descriptive data in the form of words and images. The Praat application is used to measure sound frequency from various sound sources, ensuring precise and comprehensive analysis. The results indicate that students face significant challenges in correctly pronouncing the phoneme [tˤ], with frequent articulation errors. These pronunciation difficulties are attributed to several factors, including the phonetic differences between the students' native languages and Arabic, the inherent complexity of Arabic phonemes, and the influence of various dialects or accents the students may possess. This study highlights the critical need for a thorough understanding of phoneme properties and emphasizes the importance of consistent practice to improve pronunciation accuracy of [tˤ]. By addressing these issues, educators can better support students in mastering Arabic pronunciation, ultimately enhancing their overall language proficiency. The findings of this research contribute to the broader field of phonetics and language education, offering valuable insights for language teachers and learners alike.

Resumen
Pronunciation is an essential aspect of language learning, and it can be a challenging skill for many students to master. However, research has shown that using songs in language learning can be an effective way to improve pronunciation skills (Chen & Liang, 2018; Godwin-Jones, 2019; Lee, 2021; Zahra & Hadi, 2020). One reason why songs may be effective for improving pronunciation is that they provide learners with a model for correct pronunciation. When students listen to and sing along with songs, they are exposed to the correct pronunciation of words and phrases, which can help them to develop a more accurate pronunciation themselves. This research uses qualitative methods, especially interview analysis. One of the most crucial sources in qualitative research to gain an in-depth understanding of how people experience, feel, and interpret the social world is the interview (Dong, 2012). According to Oakley, a qualitative interview is a form of framework where practices and standards can be reached, pushed, and reinforced in addition to being documented (Nasreen, 2019). This research aims to determine students’ perceptions regarding the use of songs as a tool to improve English pronunciation easily. This research was guided by three main research questions: 1. What are the students' perceptions of using English songs to improve their pronunciation? 2. Can English songs help EFL students get better at pronouncing words? 3. How could using music help students pronounce words more fluently? Each song aimed to explore a specific aspect of songs for pronunciation. This study aims to gain insight into the various ways students use songs to learn language, such as saying words and hearing the rhythm and lyrics to facilitate vocabulary learning. Learning can be made more engaging and entertaining by using songs. While learning the target language, pupils feel at ease in a calm environment and pick up the language (as seen by their better pronunciation). They become more open to learning due to lowering their affective filter. Songs also aid students in better comprehending and pronouncing key phonological elements.

Resumen
Pronunciation teaching hasn’t been paid enough attention by teachers regarding ESL contexts. In particular, segmental and suprasegmental features through genre-based approach may be an opportunity on how to integrate pronunciation into a more meaningful learning practice. Therefore, the aim of this project was to carry out a survey on some aspects related to English pronunciation that Brazilian students consider more difficult to learn, thus enabling the discussion of strategies that can facilitate the development of oral skills in English classes by integrating the teaching of phonetic-phonological aspects into the genre-based approach. Notions of intelligibility, fluency and accuracy were proposed by some authors as an ideal didactic sequence. Basic learners should be exposed to activities focused on the notion of intelligibility as well as intermediate students to the notion of fluency, and finally more advanced ones to accuracy practices. Data were collected during three high school English classes at Federal Center for Technological Education of Minas Gerais (CEFET-MG), in Brazil, through questionnaires and didactic activities, which were recorded and transcribed for further analysis. The genre ‘debate’ was chosen to facilitate the participants’ oral expression in a more flexible way, making them answer questions and give their opinion about a previously selected topic. Students demonstrated more difficulty with some aspects than others. Many of the intelligibility aspects analyzed had to be listened to more than once for a better understanding. Intermediate students’ speeches were considerably easier to understand, but they found it more difficult to pronounce the words fluently. Lastly, more advanced learners seemed to express their ideas more fluently, but still subtle issues related to accuracy were perceptible, thereby confirming the proposed hypothesis. It was also seen that using genre-based approach to promote oral communication in English classes might be relevant, considering the socio-communicative function inherent to the approach.

Resumen
The article focuses on some new approaches to teaching Practical Phonetics of English for the students majoring in Philology on the university level. The formation of phonetic skills is an indispensable condition for adequate understanding of a language message, accuracy of expression of thought and performance of a communicative function in language. It is stated that the goal of teaching phonetic material means forming comprehension, pronunciation, rhythmic, and intonation skills. One of the commonly applied algorithms of forming and improving students’ articulation skills is discussed but the authors focus on one of the stages of it and offer an example of using tongue twisters for practicing pronunciation of sounds. The research shows how to move from purely receptive exercises to receptive and reproductive ones, in which two goals are combined – the formation of listening and speaking skills. Experience has shown that the application of this strategy deepens the knowledge of basic rules of pronunciation, helps to master the articulation of those sounds that are not typical for the student’s mother tongue, as well as increases the motivation of students to study English in general and makes them sound more natural while speaking English.

Resumen
: Although word stress is a crucial aspect of English speaking, it is not given much emphasis in Indonesia's EFL instruction. Students, consequently, lack the theoretical understanding of how to properly stress syllables in English words. This study uses a program named Praat to examine the acoustic parameters of word stress produced by EFL students in terms of its intensity level. These parameters can indicate whether the students pronounce two-syllable words of nouns and verbs accurately. The subjects of this research were the third-year students of English Education Department who were selected purposively based on the students’ results of EF SET (Standardized English Test). The findings revealed that the students produced more inaccurate word stress when pronouncing nouns than they did when pronouncing verbs. Moreover, the inaccurate word stress produced by the students was divided into three categories: equation stress, no-stress placement, and reverse stress. Among the three categories, equation stress is the most common error found in this study. This study provides insight into the features of word stress and the acoustic measurement of word stress produced by Indonesian learners of English. It implies that there is a need to integrate explicit instruction on word stress. This could involve dedicated lessons on stress placement, incorporating practical exercises and feedback mechanisms to help students develop a theoretical understanding and practical skills in pronouncing English words accurately. The study also encourages future research in related areas, suggesting a focus on other pronunciation problems like intonation. This broader approach to research can contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of the challenges Indonesian learners face in mastering English pronunciation that can provide a foundation for curriculum development and instructional strategies aimed at enhancing English language proficiency in Indonesia.

Resumen
This study devised a pronunciation computer program to examine whether mobile-assisted language learning (MALL) could facilitate college students’ acquisition of English phonemes and word stress. Thirty-eight participants enrolled in the remedial English class offered at the language center of a national technological university in central Taiwan. Before the class, they were asked to read a word list. In the following six weeks, they were taught to distinguish and articulate English phonemes and to predict word stress locations using the designed computer program. They were also instructed to review the learning materials using the smart-phone version of the devised program. After the teaching session, each participant was asked again to read the same word list and fill out an assessment questionnaire. The sound analyses show that their readings of English minimal pairs and word stress placement were more accurate than their performances before the instruction. Their responses to the questionnaire indicate that both the given instruction and the designed computer program were satisfactory. In the open-ended questions, some of them said that they have built up a better understanding of phonemes and word stress, and that they would try to predict polysyllabic word stress when reading English articles. The present findings can be further applied to research on MALL-based English pronunciation acquisition.

Resumen
Purpose This study investigated the relative outcomes of segmental and prosodic training of nonnative speakers of American English. Method The study used a single-subject, alternating treatments, multiple baseline design with replication across participants and counterbalanced for order effect. Participants were 4 adult male native Hindi speakers proficient in English. Two participants received ABABCACA (A = baseline/withdrawal, B = segmental training, C = prosody training), and 2 participants received ACACBABA, with a minimum of 5 sessions per phase. Segmental accuracy and prosodic accuracy were probed at each session, as were perception of accentedness and ease of understanding. Results Visual assessment of data and effect size calculation demonstrated that segmental and prosody training resulted in increased accuracy of pronunciation and prosody patterns, respectively, and those improvements appeared to be maintained over the short term. Listeners perceived lesser accent and easier understanding as a result of the combination of segmental and prosody training. The findings are uncertain with respect to the relative contribution of segmental and prosody training, and they may be speaker dependent, but the data do suggest that both components are important. Conclusion Accent management, consisting of both segmental and prosody training, yielded positive outcomes. Further research with native language speakers of other languages is important to verify and expand on these findings.

Resumen
The use of communicative context, repetition, visual associations, and accurate pronunciation are essential elements contributing to Arabic vocabulary learning. This study investigates how communicative vocabulary learning and its contributing elements are implemented at Madrosatul Alsun in the context of non-formal education. The research method used is a qualitative approach with a case study. Data was collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation in the classroom, and documentation. The obtained data is qualitatively analyzed in three phases: first, through condensation involving data selection, purification, simplification, summarization, and transformation; second, through data display to facilitate understanding of the issues; and third, drawing conclusions, where data interpretation is performed. The results indicate that vocabulary learning is conducted by integrating it with other skills, using various techniques, including direct conjugation, definitions, synonyms, antonyms, and visual references, and translating only under specific conditions. The discussion of these findings provides new insights into the model of "meaningful words in meaningful learning," a pattern of vocabulary learning within a communicative approach in a course classroom context distinct from the formal education classroom context.

Resumen
Voice Search in Ancient Arabic studies The sound has its impact on language because of its greatest communicative and understanding phenomena. Ancient peoples paid attention to sounds. The Indians were interested in describing sounds to preserve the correct pronunciation of religious sentences, and the Greeks took great care of language, especially sounds. As for the Greeks, they studied their language phonetically, so linguistic studies became part of their philosophical thinking. As for the phonetic search among the Arabs, it was characterized by accuracy, and this is what the people of the West witnessed for this superiority. The Holy Qur’an was a basic and direct starting point for three groups of studies: linguistic, rhetorical, and Quranic studies. Therefore, the signs of audio studies appeared in varying proportions in each of these three studies. Perhaps the first to consider the connection of the phonemic lesson with linguistic, morphological and grammatical studies is Al-Khalil, who built the arrangement of sounds on a logical basis, and came out with an eye dictionary, to be, rightly, the owner of this science, and its first pioneer. Then his student Sibawayh followed him, following in the footsteps of his teacher, and added to this science what testifies to him of his precedence in it, and the scholars of grammar and reading after him followed his doctrine. Then he took on the burdens of the linguistic voice after Al-Khalil the linguistic Ibn Jinni, bypassing the stage of construction and foundation to the stage of rooting, and exposed to sound issues in his two books: The Secret of the Syntax Industry, and Characteristics in Very Accurate Research.

Resumen
International medical graduates (IMGs) comprise 26% of the U.S. physician work force. While IMGs bring all their knowledge and expertise, their pronunciation and intonation patterns often become a barrier in their ability to be understood. This breakdown in communication can affect physician-patient or physician-staff understanding and hence patient care. This study assessed the efficacy of an accent reduction program provided to IMGs and international medical researchers (IMRs) to address these communications problems. A pre and post course self-evaluation by the 82 participants, a pre and post audio-tape assessment by the course instructor, and a pre and post videotape assessment by two independent observers all pointed to significant improvement in their abilities to pronounce words distinctly, stress words or syllables more accurately and use body language/facial expressions appropriately. The results suggest that appropriate and focused training directed at improving the communication skills of non-native English speakers is highly effective.

Reading is a cognitive activity or process that aims to find various information contained in written information. This means that reading is a thought process to understand the contents of the text read. Evaluation of learning to read is a series of activities or steps taken after the completion of the main activities to obtain information about the results of learning to read, then manage and interpret them using benchmarks and goals and certain criteria. This type of research is library research, namely research conducted by analyzing and making written literature scientific journals as well as the main source. So the evaluation of learning to read is the process of determining students’ understanding, acceptance, categorization, analysis and reasoning abilities, as well as the accuracy of students’ pronunciation and intonation when taking reading tests in the target language. The purpose of learning to read is so that students can understand and use language in practice, it is not enough to measure it with mere mechanical abilities. The assessment of reading ability must be seen from the general reading ability as a whole, so that when assessing skills other than mechanical skills, it is also necessary to measure reading ability, for example understanding the content or meaning of sentences. The purpose of this study is to find out how the effort to implement the evaluation of students’ reading learning.

Resumen
Natural language processing technology is a theory and approach for exploring and developing successful human-computer communication. With the rapid growth of computer science and technology, statistical learning methods have become an important research area in artificial intelligence and semantic search. If there are errors in the semantic units (words and sentences), it will affect future text analysis and semantic understanding, eventually affecting the whole application system performance. As a result, intelligent word and grammatical error detection and correction in English text are a significant and difficult aspect of natural language processing. Therefore, this paper examines the phenomena of word spelling and grammatical errors in undergraduate English essays and balances the mathematical-statistical models and technology solutions involved in intelligent error correction. The research findings of this study are represented in two aspects. (1) In nonword mistakes, four sorts of errors are studied: insertion, loss, replacement, and exchange between letters. It focuses on nonword mistakes and varied word forms (such as English abbreviations, hyphenated compound terms, and proper nouns) produced by word pronunciation difficulties. This paper utilizes the nonword check information to recommend an optimum combination prediction method based on the suggested candidate list for actual word errors, and the genuine word repair model is trained. This approach is 83.78% accurate when used with actual words with spelling errors in the context. (2) It verifies and corrects sentence grammar using context information from the text training set, as well as grammatical rules and statistical models. In addition, it has investigated singular and plural inconsistency, word confusion, subject, and predicate inconsistency, and modal (auxiliary) verb errors. It includes sentence boundary disambiguation, word part-of-speech tagging, named entity identification, and context information extraction. The software for checking and fixing sentence grammatical mistakes presented in this article works on English texts with difficulty levels 4 and 6. Furthermore, this work obtains a clause correctness rate of 99.70%, and the system’s average corrective accuracy rate for four-level and six-level essays is more than 80%.

Resumen
ABSTRACTThe current project aimed to investigate the potentially different linguistic correlates of comprehensibility (i.e., ease of understanding) and accentedness (i.e., linguistic nativelikeness) in adult second language (L2) learners’ extemporaneous speech production. Timed picture descriptions from 120 beginner, intermediate, and advanced Japanese learners of English were analyzed using native speaker global judgments based on learners’ comprehensibility and accentedness, and then submitted to segmental, prosodic, temporal, lexical, and grammatical analyses. Results showed that comprehensibility was related to all linguistic domains, and accentedness was strongly tied with pronunciation (specifically segmentals) rather than lexical and grammatical domains. In particular, linguistic correlates of L2 comprehensibility and accentedness were found to vary by learners’ proficiency levels. In terms of comprehensibility, optimal rate of speech, appropriate and rich vocabulary use, and adequate and varied prosody were important for beginner to intermediate levels, whereas segmental accuracy, good prosody, and correct grammar featured strongly for intermediate to advanced levels. For accentedness, grammatical complexity was a feature of intermediate to high-level performance, whereas segmental and prosodic variables were essential to accentedness across all levels. These findings suggest that syllabi tailored to learners’ proficiency level (beginner, intermediate, or advanced) and learning goal (comprehensibility or nativelike accent) would be advantageous for the teaching of L2 speaking.

Resumen
Numerous pedagogical resources (Price, 2008; Batchelor & Chebli-Saadi, 2011; Judge & Healey, 1985, among others) dedicated to French language learning frequently rely on English translations and simplified examples, neglecting the intricate nuances and distinctive features inherent in the French language. This study aims to explore the complexities encountered by learners in mastering French subject pronouns (FSPs) compared to their English equivalents. Drawing upon Fry’s (2016) framework for efficient study techniques, our objective is to identify unique challenges and propose strategies to mitigate them. Employing a comparative qualitative research approach, we meticulously examined FSPs examples with input from five native French speakers to ensure linguistic accuracy and cultural authenticity. The findings illuminate the distinctive characteristics of FSPs, including their agreement in person, number, and gender, as opposed to English subject pronouns, which only agree in person and number due to the absence of a straightforward gender category. Furthermore, the study reveals nuances in pronunciation, spelling, contraction, and liaison that contribute to the difficulty of learning FSPs. This research contributes to the pedagogical discourse by providing evidence-based recommendations to address the challenges associated with mastering FSPs, thereby advancing language education practices. Pedagogical implications include incorporating the identified distinctive features directly into French language courses to facilitate understanding and learning. Additionally, learners can benefit from utilizing effective study techniques to grasp the peculiarities of FSPs, ultimately enhancing linguistic knowledge and comprehension.

Reading the Qur'an is one of the noble deeds. A good recitation of the Qur'an will be worth a reward for the reader and vice versa; a wrong reading will get a sin. Before reading the Koran, we must study Maharaj and tajwid properly and correctly because then we will be able to read the Koran fluently, sufficiently, and accurately. The approach method used in this activity is by using the ummi method, which is carried out to improve the reading of the Qur'an for children and adolescents in Astapah village. This activity was carried out because the ummi method became an effective learning system. After all, it could listen directly and check to understand and correct the pronunciation of the hijaiyah letters for children and adolescents in Astapah village. With this guidance, the students can also be closer to the community. Based on the results of community empowerment activities, it can be concluded that there is an increase in the knowledge and understanding of children and adolescents about makhorijul letters and tajwid after mentoring and training on how to recite the hijaiyah letters and the science of recitation so that students can read the Qur'an properly and correctly, and help the institutions where the Qur'an learns to improve the quality of reading the Qur'an for children and adolescents in Astapah village.

Resumen
This study investigates the effects of gender and the learning context on learners’ perceptions of Arabic consonant contrasts. To this end, 60 intermediate Arabic learners, half of which were males and half of which were females, were recruited from two different learning contexts: a study-abroad (SA) program in Egypt and an at-home (AH) setting at a western American university. Learners in the two groups were tested before and after a semester of Arabic study using a perception task that involved distinguishing four Arabic consonant contrasts: /d - dˁ/, /h - ħ/, /s - sˁ/, and /t - tˁ/). The results reveal that the advantage of females in segmental identification accuracy was not verified, as female performance did not significantly differ from male performance in any of the four target consonant contrasts. In contrast, the learning context was found to positively impact learners’ perceptions of the target Arabic consonants, as the SA group significantly outperformed their counterparts in the AH environment on the /h - ħ/ and /d - dˁ/ contrasts. However, there were no significant differences between learners in the two different contexts regarding the two other consonant contrasts (i.e., /s - sˁ/ and /t - tˁ/). The findings bring insights into the understanding of the gender-based differences in identifying problematic Arabic consonantal contrasts for English learners in two different contexts of learning, and they shed light on the implications for language pedagogy for pronunciation training.

Resumen
Oral evaluation is one of the most critical processes in children’s language learning. Traditionally, the Scoring Rubric is widely used in oral evaluation for providing a ranking score by assessing word accuracy, phoneme accuracy, fluency, and accent position of a tester. In recent years, by the emerging demands of the market, oral evaluation requires not only providing a single score from pronunciation but also in-depth, meaning comments based on content, context, logic, and understanding. However, the Scoring Rubric requires massive human work (oral evaluation experts) to provide such deep meaning comments. It is considered uneconomical and inefficient in the current market. Therefore, this paper proposes an automated expert comment generation approach for oral evaluation. The approach first extracts the oral features from the children’s audio as well as the text features from the corresponding expert comments. Then, a Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU) is applied to encode the oral features into the model. Afterwards, a Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) model is applied to train the mappings between oral features and text features and generate expert comments for the new coming oral audio. Finally, a Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) is combined to improve the quality of the generated comments. It generates pseudo-comments to train the discriminator to recognize the human-like comments. The proposed approach is evaluated in a real-world audio dataset (children oral audio) collected by our collaborative company. The proposed approach is also integrated into a commercial application to generate expert comments for children’s oral evaluation. The experimental results and the lessons learned from real-world applications show that the proposed approach is effective for providing meaningful comments for oral evaluation.

Resumen
The constant search for suitable teaching materials to achieve the linguistic skills provided by a language teaching course, finds in authentic documents an important instrument for teaching foreign languages. The scientific literature attesting to the effectiveness of the authentic material is wide and consolidated; indeed, a text conceived by a native for a native, and, therefore, not developed for the sole purpose of teaching a foreign language, is intrinsically carrying a cultural richness and a linguistic variety, which are rarely present in any didactic artifact. The authentic material therefore represents an opportunity to meet the fixed expressions that are part of the communicative potential of a language; their teaching is not always taken into account, or is considered, at most, as a positive side effect of the natural process of linguistic acquisition. A communicative act for it to be effective must be able to be understood by the interlocutor ; it is therefore necessary to ensure not only grammatical accuracy and correct pronunciation, but also the understanding and use of frozen sequences. The graphic novel can offer the opportunity to benefit from an authentic language rich in idiomatic expressions, because the effectiveness of dialogues is a transposition of the language spoken in everyday life and familiar expressions. The article aims to show the didactic advantages of a graphic novel in the teaching of the French language. We explain the importance of the text-image relationship and the potential of the verbal language of the graphic novel, and we talk about the need to learn frozen expressions for a good command of the language and the distinctive aspects specific to comics that contribute to their understanding and learning; we show, finally, how the adoption, within the framework of a contrastive analysis of the language, of the graphic novel Persépolis by Marjane Satrapi could help the students to understand more easily the fixed expressions

Resumen
AbstractStudents of English Language Education Program in Faculty of Cultural Studies Universitas Brawijaya ideally master Grammar before taking the degree of Sarjana Pendidikan. However, the fact shows that they are still weak in Grammar especially tenses. Therefore, the researchers initiate to develop a video as a media to teach tenses. Objectively, by using video, students get better understanding on tenses so that they can communicate using English accurately and contextually. To develop the video, the researchers used ADDIE model (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation). First, the researchers analyzed the students’ learning need to determine the product that would be developed, in this case was a movie about English tenses. Then, the researchers developed a video as the product. The product then was validated by media expert who validated attractiveness, typography, audio, image, and usefulness and content expert and validated by a content expert who validated the language aspects and tenses of English used by the actors in the video dealing with the grammar content, pronunciation, and fluency performed by the actors. The result of validation shows that the video developed was considered good. Theoretically, it is appropriate to be used English Grammar classes. However, the media expert suggests that it still needs some improvement for the next development especially dealing with the synchronization between lips movement and sound on the scenes while the content expert suggests that the Grammar content of the video should focus on one tense only to provide more detailed concept of the tense.

Resumen
<b><i>Background/Aims:</i></b> Previous research has shown that exposure to multiple foreign accents facilitates adaptation to an untrained novel accent. One explanation is that L2 speech varies systematically such that there are commonalities in the productions of nonnative speakers, regardless of their language background. <b><i>Methods:</i></b> A systematic acoustic comparison was conducted between 3 native English speakers and 6 nonnative accents. Voice onset time, unstressed vowel duration, and formant values of stressed and unstressed vowels were analyzed, comparing each nonnative accent to the native English talkers. A subsequent perception experiment tests what effect training on regionally accented voices has on the participant’s comprehension of nonnative accented speech to investigate the importance of within-speaker variation on attunement and generalization. <b><i>Results:</i></b> Data for each measure show substantial variability across speakers, reflecting phonetic transfer from individual L1s, as well as substantial inconsistency and variability in pronunciation, rather than commonalities in their productions. Training on native English varieties did not improve participants’ accuracy in understanding nonnative speech. <b><i>Conclusion:</i></b> These findings are more consistent with a hypothesis of accent attunement wherein listeners track general patterns of nonnative speech rather than relying on overlapping acoustic signals between speakers.

Resumen
The problem of speech delay in children is a serious problem that must be addressed immediately because it is one of the most common causes of developmental disorders in children. Several studies in several countries state that about 6 to 8% of preschool children have speech delay problems. Speech delay can be seen from the accuracy of word use, which is characterized by unclear pronunciation and in communicating can only use sign language, so that parents and people who those around him are less able to understand the child, even though the child can actually understand what people are talking about. This speech delay will not only affect the social and personal adjustment of the child, but can also affect the academic adjustment of the child. The method used in the implementation of this service activity is through the method of socialization and simulation approaches in the form of lectures and demonstrations. This service activity was carried out aiming to explain the factors that affect speech delay in children and also the treatment given by parents, teachers and the environment in response to this problem. have their own understanding in dealing with children who are late to speak and design a concept model for developing language skills for children who are late. In the end, the team of service implementation activities through this activity hopes that Nurul Hasanah's teachers can improve students' language development, knowledge and skills in presenting learning that is more attractive to students in learning.

Resumen
Purpose. The article is devoted to the question of reflecting the level of lexical planning on the speaker’s articulation characteristics. Its purpose is to explore, first, the relationship between communicative situation and lexical planning, and second, its impact on pronunciation processes. The relationship between lexical language planning and articulation plays an important theoretical role in understanding language production. However, its nature remains poorly understood. And although linguists distinguish three aspects of language production (planning process, articulation plan and plan of performance), research in this area is mainly focused on the relationship between the first and last aspect. Any systematic change of articulation occurs solely due to variations in the planning and search for the representation of the word. Acoustic reduction occurs through the simplification of production mechanisms, and the reduction is the result of some combination of activating conceptual and linguistic representations associated with the word and simplifying any of the processes involved in creating the articulation of the plan from the concept. According to this view, it is assumed that changes in the pronunciation of a word due to contextual data occur entirely through the simplification of the processes of representation or coding involved in planning. This paper focuses on the study of possible ways of influence and dependence of lexical planning and articulation processes at both segmental and supersegmental levels by studying the relationship between communication and lexical planning, as well as the influence of language planning on pronunciation.Methods. To achieve this goal, methods were used such as covert recording methods (to obtain speech samples that most accurately reflect the natural speech behavior of the speaker), semi-standard interview (its principle is that the interviewer has the opportunity depending on the circumstances, vary the form of questions, which are aimed not at obtaining certain information from respondents, but at obtaining samples of speech of the required styles) and included observation (recording the informant’s speech in a formal communication situation), auditory (to identify and interpret collected material), comparative method (for comparing pronunciation variants of different communicative situations).Results. Increasing complexity of speech production during lexical planning leads to increased articulation detail. Reducing complexity of production leads to a decrease in pronunciation, which means faster planning, will lead to fewer details.Conclusions. The more relaxed the communication environment is, the simpler and shorter the words the speaker uses and, as a result, the articulation becomes less detailed. Various processes of sound changing, and at the same time intonation models are not always directly related to the tendency to save language in a situation of relaxed communication, but also to the peculiarities of linguistic planning, the speed of which increases significantly during spontaneous speech.Key words: language production, pronunciation, communication situation, lexical search.

Resumen
Phonetics and phonology are the two branches of al-Ashwat's science that are most important in studying a language. Because if the phonetics are not in accordance with the original narrative, then the sounds of the language, phrases, words, and sentences spoken will not be understood by the other person. Or it can happen, a change in the meaning of what the speaker wants. In other words, the two sciences contribute greatly to the suitability and accuracy of sounds, words, and sentences in the language process. Understanding and mastering al-Ashwat plays an important role in these two language skills, namely maharah al-Istima' and maharah al-Kalam. With perfect comprehension and fluent pronunciation, one will be able to listen and understand the sound symbols spoken by others. This is a sign that the listening process is running smoothly and listening skills have been mastered. Also in terms of oral skills, when an Arabic speaker can understand what the other person is saying, it shows that the oral process is running smoothly and the oral skills have been mastered. Because of the important position of al-Ashwat in language learning and communication, in the process of learning al-Qur'an tahsin at all levels of education it is necessary to pay more attention to al-Ashwat. However, the reality that occurs during the teaching of tahsin al-Quran, presenting the teaching of al-Ashwat is very rare. Based on this phenomenon, this research is very useful for teachers and students to determine how to reproduce the correct Qur'an in the learning process of reading the Qur'an for beginners.

Resumen
Natural Language Processing is a branch of artificial intelligence (AI) that focuses on the interaction between computers and human language. Speech recognition systems utilize machine learning algorithms and statistical models to analyze acoustic features of speech, such as pitch, duration, and frequency, to convert spoken words into written text. The Student English Oral Proficiency Assessment and Feedback System provides students with a comprehensive evaluation of their spoken English skills and offers tailored feedback to help them improve. It can be used in language learning institutions, universities, or online platforms to support language education and enhance oral communication abilities. In this paper constructed a framework stated as Latent Dirichlet Integrated Deep Learning (LDiDL) for the assessment of student English proficiency assessment. The system begins by collecting a comprehensive dataset of spoken English samples, encompassing various proficiency levels. Relevant features are extracted from the samples, including acoustic characteristics and linguistic attributes. Leveraging Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA), the system uncovers latent topics within the data, enabling a deeper understanding of the underlying themes present in the spoken English. To further enhance the analysis, a deep learning model is developed, integrating the LDA topics with the extracted features. This model is trained using appropriate techniques and evaluated using performance metrics. Utilizing the predictions made by the model, the system generates personalized feedback for each student, focusing on areas of improvement such as vocabulary, grammar, fluency, and pronunciation. Simulation mode uses the native English speech audio for the LDiDL training and classification. The experimental analysis stated that the proposed LDiDL model achieves an accuracy of 99% for the assessment of English Proficiency.

Resumen
Speaking skills are a very important aspect of learning English to establish good communication. However, many students still need help expressing what they want to convey, be it ideas, ideas in a reading, or opinions when communicating, because of a lack of confidence from students. Thus, this study aims to improve students' speaking skills and to find out the factors and causes of students' difficulties in understanding reading by applying the learning method of reading aloud in learning text reports. This research was conducted at SMKN 1 SOREANG class X-TKJ (Network Computer Engineering) 1 with 36 participants. This research uses qualitative methods with a Classroom Action research approach. Data collection techniques in this study used three techniques, namely, Instruments: observations, field notes, and interviews. Based on the results of the study, the researcher can conclude that the application of the aloud reading learning method carried out by the teacher can run smoothly because, by the procedure, application of reading aloud, students can follow the teacher's direction well. In this learning process, students are very enthusiastic, and this encourages student learning motivation, especially in reading English texts; besides that, students can improve significantly in student speaking skills In several aspects it has so that students can be responsive when answering questions related to the reading that the teacher gives quickly. Therefore, based on the results of the research, some of the consequences of students' difficulties in speaking skills can be overcome by applying the method of learning to read aloud by increasing aspects of speaking skills in students, namely: 1) Fluency, 2) Pronunciation; 3) Intonation; 4) Accuracy.

Texto completo
Resumen
In order to obtain real-time controlling dynamics in air traffic system, a framework is proposed to introduce and process air traffic control (ATC) speech via radiotelephony communication. An automatic speech recognition (ASR) and controlling instruction understanding (CIU)-based pipeline is designed to convert the ATC speech into ATC related elements, i.e., controlling intent and parameters. A correction procedure is also proposed to improve the reliability of the information obtained by the proposed framework. In the ASR model, acoustic model (AM), pronunciation model (PM), and phoneme- and word-based language model (LM) are proposed to unify multilingual ASR into one model. In this work, based on their tasks, the AM and PM are defined as speech recognition and machine translation problems respectively. Two-dimensional convolution and average-pooling layers are designed to solve special challenges of ASR in ATC. An encoder–decoder architecture-based neural network is proposed to translate phoneme labels into word labels, which achieves the purpose of ASR. In the CIU model, a recurrent neural network-based joint model is proposed to detect the controlling intent and label the controlling parameters, in which the two tasks are solved in one network to enhance the performance with each other based on ATC communication rules. The ATC speech is now converted into ATC related elements by the proposed ASR and CIU model. To further improve the accuracy of the sensing framework, a correction procedure is proposed to revise minor mistakes in ASR decoding results based on the flight information, such as flight plan, ADS-B. The proposed models are trained using real operating data and applied to a civil aviation airport in China to evaluate their performance. Experimental results show that the proposed framework can obtain real-time controlling dynamics with high performance, only 4% word-error rate. Meanwhile, the decoding efficiency can also meet the requirement of real-time applications, i.e., an average 0.147 real time factor. With the proposed framework and obtained traffic dynamics, current ATC applications can be accomplished with higher accuracy. In addition, the proposed ASR pipeline has high reusability, which allows us to apply it to other controlling scenes and languages with minor changes.
