AbstractEarlier studies have corroborated that human translation exhibits unique linguistic features, usually referred to as translationese. However, research on machine translationese, in spite of some sparse efforts, is still in its infancy. By comparing machine translation with human translation and original target language texts, this study aims to investigate if machine translation has unique linguistic features of its own too, to what extent machine translations are different from human translations and target-language originals, and what characteristics are typical of machine translations. To this end, we collected a corpus containing English translations of modern Chinese literary texts produced by neural machine translation systems and human professional translators and comparable original texts in the target language. Based on the corpus, a quantitative study of discourse coherence was conducted by observing metrics in three dimensions borrowed from Coh-Metrix, including connectives, latent semantic analysis and the situation/mental model. The results support the existence of translationese in both human and machine translations when they are compared with original texts. However, machine translationese is not the same as human translationese in some metrics of discourse coherence. Additionally, machine translation systems, such as Google and DeepL, when compared with each other, show unique features in some coherence metrics, although on the whole they are not significantly different from each other in those coherence metrics.

Abstract: I argue that contemporary critical translation theories shed light on both Geoffrey chaucer's translational environment and a cluster of five translational actions: communication, transformation, transportation, hermeneutics, and liminality. Each translational cluster has its desired goals, and each leaves its traces. They infiltrate chaucer's writing practice in varying degrees, and they appear in various combinations — even in works that are not translations, do not contain translations, or do not pose as translations. I close with a case study of The Squire's Tale , a canterbury tale with no known analogues and only tangential sources. Abetted by the five translational actions, however, the tale takes the guise of a translation, one that stretches beyond the British Isles into the outer limits of the world as known and imagined in late-medieval England.

Translation Epistemology: Implied and Expressed The starting point for determining the nature of translation epistemology, which develops in parallel to the philosophical theory of cognition, is to distinguish an internal epistemology that permeates the field of translation communication – one of the varieties of verbal textual communication. Its goals are cognitive and exploratory. Cognition refers to the essence of translational communication, exploration refers to the forms differentiating this type of communication. I define translation as the interlingual re-editing of a ready text; and in the space of textual communication it generates seven fundamental components: 1. foreign-language originals or foreign-language translations, 2. mental translations (paratexts), 3. complete translations, 4. fragmentary translations, 5. translation-like structures, 6. translational reflections, and 7. translational fantasies. In this area the epistemology of translation is equivalent to the documentalist’s epistemology. For the translator, any textual structure, subjected to interlingual re-editing, becomes a document as well as a task. In the process of translation, cognitive activity is intertwined with praxeological one, the acquisition of knowledge is combined with the improvement of the craft of translation, the concurrence of cognition and skill prevails. The whole epistemological activity of translators and translation scholars, implicit and explicit, consists in the fact that the translator repeats the hypothetical path of the original author, while the translation scholar repeats bot the hypothetical path of the translator and the hypothetical path of the original author.

This research focuses upon how the translation of certain types of literature in China evolved historically: from ‘non-translations’ (i.e., ‘translations’ unmade as well as made and yet strictly forbidden under given censorship conditions) to ‘partial’ or ‘full/near-full’ translations set against the backdrop of changing practices required by the country’s censorship policies. My analysis begins with an overview of the multi-faceted interface between censorship and translation, followed by the conceptualization of a typology of translations under censorship. This initial discussion, in turn, allows me to resituate specific translations, including the once absented translations of earlier times (i.e., prior to the 1949 Revolution or prior to the Cultural Revolution), which were initially taken at face value as ‘non-translations’ and yet which, later on, became ‘partial’ or ‘full/near-full’ translations under the country’s subsequently more relaxed censorial operations. I attempt to illustrate such shifts by means of in-depth discussion of the dynamic nature of translational commitment in connection with the change-resistant properties and evolving priorities of censorship. In illustrating my arguments, I will draw specific examples from case studies of three well-known censorship-affected translations – i.e., On China (Kissinger 2011), Lolita (Nabokov 1991) and The Good Earth (Buck 1960), which, I argue, epitomise the shifting degrees of translational commitment (‘non-,’ ‘partial’ and ‘full/near-full’) as they occurred in the Chinese context.

This article studies linguistic landscape (LL) from a translational perspective. It aims to examine the translation strategies adopted in translating texts on non-official public signs and assess the quality of their translations. For accomplishing this, the author analysed a corpus of one hundred photos of public signage representing bilingual (translational) content based on two criteria. Namely, the translation strategies employed in translating public signs and the appropriateness of public signage translations for their target readers. The study concludes that several translation strategies are used to convey the informative content of public signs, such as transference, word-for-word translation, generalisation, and omission. Furthermore, the study reveals cases of inaccurate translations that can be attributed to the translator’s linguistic incompetence, improper use of translation strategies, and linguistic incompatibilities between English and Arabic. Such mistranslations distort the informative content of the original text and give rise to different interpretations. The study’s implication is to draw attention to the importance of translational content of public signs as it serves as a medium of communication and reflects the image of linguistic cityscape.

AbstractThis article compares several post-1950s translations of the Liezi, and examines the concept of originality, the degrees of closeness to the original text a modern translation can achieve, and how this “faithfulness” can be understood. I first discuss how the problem of the Liezi's originality has negatively influenced critics' and translators' perception of the text's significance, then compare its different translations to show their specific translational and interpretational problems. Finally, I reflect on the overarching methodological question that frames my comparisons of translations, namely, why compare? I argue that comparing translations cannot be a means to ascertain the best translation, because both concepts of originality and faithfulness are multiple in meaning rather than singularly defined. Instead of measuring translations in terms of “fidelity,” a more insightful practice would be discovering the insights different translations offer into the relationships between the original and translated texts, source and target languages, as well as questioning the construction of texts as “original source texts” through translation by recognizing the potential fluidity and multiplicity of the source text itself.

The present paper examined cultural and ideological implications in translation studies. For this purpose, four Persian translations of Hell-Heaven were chosen. Hell-Heaven is a story adopted from “Unaccustomed Earth” (2008), written by the Indian-American writer, Jhumpa Lahiri. Therefore, the translations were explored to detect translators’ ideological shifts; in the way that all components of translations were pondered to detect translational adaptations chosen by four translators. The result showed that translators had adopted translational strategies such as addition, deletion and substitution to deal with American and Indian’s cultural and ideological differences.

Reading a translation is not a single text-related experience or event. Behind every translation, there is an entire historically developed ecosystem of many other translations. This paper focuses on the translational ecosystem of the Romanian translations of the works of Walter Benjamin. This includes 15 translations, 13 translators, 10 publishers and 1 author: Benjamin. These figures articulate a first, clearly heterogeneous, irregular, perhaps even slightly chaotic image of the Romanian translation corpus of Walter Benjamins’ works. At the same time, we argue, this corpus is to be regarded less as an archipelago of scattered texts than as a constellation of translations. This constellation may be lacking a central translation project but features, nevertheless, an internal coherence. Based on the internal logic of this text formation and the transfer practice behind it, the analysis attempts to outline its position within contemporary Romanian „Translationskultur“, as defined within the German theoretical tradition.

In this paper, an attempt will be made to present a kind of imprint of the translators’ meta-linguistic activity by examining the preface of the most significant Hungarian Bible translations. This will involve an analysis of how they perceive their own translational and linguistic work, and how they evaluate their own linguistic work in the preface of the volumes. The summarised findings will then be synthesised with the relevant ideas concerning translation and language use, whilst acknowledging that recent studies have brought to light different concepts. The present study will primarily adopt a general linguistic perspective, with the possibility of incorporating a philological viewpoint, and will not utilise the tools of modern translation studies when analysing the texts. The analysis does not deal with the translation theories applied in the Hungarian Bible translations, but a more detailed knowledge of the content of the prefaces may help to gain a deeper understanding of the translation theories behind the translations. Research on the philological or linguistic topic of the prefaces of Bible translations is not new in the field, but an introductory sub-chapter of Christiane Nord’s study (Nord, 2016, pp. 568–569) is somewhat unique in that it employs seventeen English-language prefaces offered by BibleGateway in February 2016. The study’s conclusion asserts that despite the proliferation of 20th-century Bible translation theory and practice, English-language Bibles contain a paucity of information regarding the linguistic and grammatical aspects of translation, the purpose of translations, and strategies for the translation process. The research tries to determine what kind of linguistic information is relevant in the prefaces of Hungarian Bible translations. The aim of this study is to identify the meta-linguistic information in the preface of the Bible translations, and to summarise the content relating to linguistic and translation studies: from early Hungarian translations from the 16–17th century, and from the current translations from the 20–21st century.

This paper points on the use of design thinking in fundamental translation class. Design thinking is an approach to produce the best solution of a problem. This approach includes five steps, namely empathize, define (the problem), ideate, prototype, and test. The researchers focus on the translation’s acceptability of idioms since this topic is usually problematic to students. Therefore, a case study was conducted in this research. The participants of this research were 20 students of fundamental translation class in English Literature Study Program, Universitas Jenderal Soedirman. The students translated some idioms using design thinking and their translations were randomly selected. Observation was conducted to examine the students’ behaviours in translating idioms. After that, the researchers rated their translations’ acceptability. The results indicate that design thinking’s application in translating idioms produce acceptable translations. Furthermore, this study can be beneficial for translators and translation teachers to gain acceptability in translation.

The advance of corpus-based methodology in translation studies has greatly enhanced our understanding of the nature of translational language. While most research efforts have focused on identifying the unique features of translations carried out by professionals, comparatively fewer studies have investigated the linguistic features of student translations. In this corpus-based study, we examine if learner translations carried out by Hong Kong students exhibit lexical simplification features vis-à-vis comparable written texts. The study is based on two comparable corpora: the International Corpus of English in Hong Kong (ICE-HK) and the Parallel Learner Translation Corpus (PLTC) compiled at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Following Laviosa (1998), we compare four main lexical features (lexical density, type-token ratio, core vocabulary coverage, and list head coverage) to investigate if student translations show a simplification trend. The results demonstrate that Chinese-to-English translation is not lexically simpler than English as a Second Language (ESL) writing. Furthermore, it is lexically denser than ESL writing. Our study aims to provide new insights into learner translation as a form of constrained communication.

In some cases the meaning-based approach used in the translation of the Good News Bible appears to support translational choices that strengthen or even introduce anti-Judaism in translation. There are instances where such translational choices are not required by the source text. It is possible, in the examples selected for discussion, to arrive at translations that follow the source text closely, are less anti-Jewish, and conform to the principles of a meaning-based approach. In principle, almost every translator of texts from the New Testament faces translational choices possibly introducing a note of anti-Judaism in translation. However, the meaning-based approach might disambiguate ambiguous passages in a way that introduces a stronger note of anti-Judaism (if compared to more formally equivalent translations), as one of the examples indicates.

In modern Japan, especially in the Meiji period (1868-1912), translations occupied a dominant position in the literary polysystem. This paper claims that, since the Meiji period, “competing translational norms” have existed in the Japanese literary polysystem, which is to say that “literal” (adequate) and “free” (acceptable) translations have existed in parallel, vying for superior status. Moreover, this paper traces the literalist tradition in modern Japan. Though “literal” translation has been widely criticized, the styles and expressions it created have made a significant contribution to the founding and development of the modern Japanese language and its literature. Among the arguments in favor of literal translation, Iwano Homei’s literal translation strategy—the so-called “straight translation”—had different features than the others, and thus the potential to produce translations that maintain the cohesion, coherence, information structure and illocutionary effects of the source text.

ON THE PERSPECTIVES OFFERED BY A ‘NEW’ HISTORY OF TRANSLATION ON THE EXAMPLE OF SEVERAL 19TH CENTURY TRANSLATIONSTo become a discipline in its own right, translation studies needs to explore its own history, not only in the traditional sense – the study of the impact of translations of masterpieces on Polish literature – but also in a more modern and eclectic one. This article tests one such newer approach, proposed by Lieven D’hulst, using several nineteenth-century translations of Hippolyte Taine’s works into Polish as examples, and it focuses on the translators and their choices, the context of their work, and the causes and effects of their translations. The aim of the study is to show that interdisciplinarity is an opportunity for translation studies and that the history of translation after the cultural turn can be a worthwhile area of research.

The article attempts to catalogue the various relationships of authorial and translational writing and the ways in which one affects the other or vice versa (typically, a direction of influence is clearly identifiable). The author indicates and discusses the following trajectories: from translating to stylising original writing as a translation; from translating to pseudotranslations; from translating to stylising a translation as an original; from translating to an authorial control over the translations of one’s writing; from translating to author-like control over translations; from original writing to co-authoring translations; from original writing to mythologised translation; from authorial fame to marginalisation of translation activity; from translating to suppression of original writing; affinities of technique: from stylisation in one’s own writing to stylising in translation; from authoring a text to translating it (self-translation); translatology of the imaginary: a writer as a wished-for translator. The argument pivots on references to figures of writers-translators who metonymically represent particular categories or phenomena. The examples of combining original writing with translational activity used for illustration have in part already been described in the literature of the subject, however, in a different perspective. Other cases are believed not to have been discussed so far.

The author presents the historical perspective of translating Andersen into Polish in the 19th and 20th century and, based on selected examples, analyzes such essential issues within the realm of artistic translation as translation policy/publishing policy as well as the translator’s culture-formative role and tasks. The analyzed issues also include recent and older translations, the culture of translation and, last but not least, the role of translational and literary criticism in the reception process.

This paper examines the influence of the gender and culture of Arab male translators on the Arabic translations of Toni Morrison's The Bluest Eye. It compares the translations by Kamel Youssef Hessein and Fadel Soultani, and focuses on how gender biases and cultural contexts influence the translation and affect the portrayal of female characters. The study employs a qualitative method, integrating Fairclough's Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) and Toury's Translational Norms (TN) to assess the Arab male translators' linguistic choices and their impact on the target texts (TTs). Through a paratextual, descriptive, interpretative, and translational norms analysis, the research identifies cases of gender bias, cultural adaptation, and ideological influences in the translations. The findings reveal that male translators' interpretations lead to subtle erasures and alterations of female characters' voices, reflecting certain patriarchal and cultural biases. The study emphasizes the need of taking into account the gender and cultural background of the translator in literary translation.

This study aims to examine the influence of multiple translations of a word on bilingual processing in three translation recognition experiments during which French–English bilinguals had to decide whether two words were translations of each other or not. In the first experiment, words with only one translation were recognized as translations faster than words with multiple translations. Furthermore, when words were presented with their dominant translation, the recognition process was faster than when words were presented with their non-dominant translation. In Experiment 2, these effects were replicated in both directions of translation (L1–L2 and L2–L1). In Experiment 3, we manipulated number-of-translations and the semantic relatedness between the different translations of a word. When the two translations of a word (i.e., bateau) were related in meaning (synonyms such as the English translations boat and ship), the translation recognition process was faster than when the two translations of a word (i.e., argent) were unrelated in meaning (the two translations money and silver). The consequences of translation ambiguities are discussed in the light of the distributed conceptual feature model of bilingual memory (De Groot, 1992b; Van Hell and De Groot, 1998b).

This opening essay of the special issue on ‘Narration and Translation’ discusses the overlaps between the fields of narratology and translation studies. The fact that translation scholars have merely skimmed the surface of narratological issues relevant for the study of translation can be understood within the context of early developments in translation studies. The first explicit use of narratological models in this discipline has grown out of unease with the extant focus on the macrostructural level of translations. In recent decades, translation scholars have begun to include narrative approaches in their research. Some conceptualize the translator’s discursive presence by referring to a model of narrative communication, or borrow concepts from narratology in order to analyse observed shifts in literary translations. Outside the domain of literary translation studies, scholars have looked into the way translation can refashion narratives in the real world. Conversely, narrative theories have rarely dealt with translational issues, even though they often rely on translations of literary texts. The issue as a whole wants to enhance the dialogue between narratology and translation studies. Each essay explores aspects of the relation between narration and translation.

This paper examines the paratextual framing of the English translations of Jinpingmei (JPM). The primary focus is on the ways in which two remarkable translations are (re)packaged for the intended audience in the Anglophone world. Drawing upon Genette’s paratextuality theory and contemporary translation theories, the paper attempts to investigate whether and how paratextual elements can (re)shape the two translations and foster the representation of alterity. After presenting the theoretical framework, the paper focuses on the peritexts surrounding the core texts. It argues that peritextual manipulation not merely serves marketing ends but highlights translators’ visibility and ideological intervention in producing translations of premodern Chinese texts in different historical settings in the receiving context. It concludes that translational peritexts can be an effective means to enact cross-cultural construction and that the latest translation demonstrates a higher level of peritextual visibility in sustaining the genre of Chinese vernacular fiction and in promoting images of Chinese culture in the receiving context.

AbstractCurrent translation studies do not present a clear distinction between ‘translationese’ and ‘interlanguage’, giving rise to conceptual and terminology confusion. To disentangle these two concepts, we start with a relatively conservative working definition of translationese, then find it necessary to first differentiate between direct and inverse translations, according to whether the translator's L1 equals to TL or not. Taking Zhuangzi (a Daoist classic) as a case, we made both inter- and intra-speaker comparisons among Lin Yu-tang's inverse translation, James Legge's direct translation, and the two translators' creative works in English, with well-established language complexity metrics and quantitative methods. Results show that: (1) Inverse and direct translations are remarkably different in terms of complexity; (2) Inverse translation demonstrates both features of interlanguage and translationese, with the former mostly at lexical level and the latter at syntactic level; (3) Similar patterns are also discovered in Lin's other inverse translated works, suggesting our quantitative comparative method proposed may be reliable to some extent. Such results support our proposal that translationese and interlanguage should and can be differentiated for both theoretical and practical purposes.

The article presents part of the research on retranslation in modern translation studies both in Russia and abroad. Some factors and causes are characterised as being important for choosing world classical works of literature, namely the status of the author and his/her creative works in the world community, his/her popularity at a certain time of the society development, the obsolescence of previous translations, from the view point of modern cultural realia, the aim of the translator to present his/her interpretation of the original text, etc. Of great importance is the study of William Shakespeare’s works who is a world literature classic. The translations of Shakespeare’s works into Russian are considered to be the best translations from English into a foreign language. The article analyses the degree of translation’s adequacy which is one of the most important criteria of translation quality.

This study is based on a comparative analysis of Turkish translations of Sanctuary (1931) by William Faulkner and aims to review the assumptions of literary translation by Antoine Berman’s “retranslation hypothesis” and “deforming tendencies”. The novel was exposed to an obligatory rewriting process by the editor and was reworded by Faulkner who acted as a self-translator to make the original version acceptable. The rewritten version, which can be regarded as an intralingual translation, became the source text for interlingual translations. The novel was first translated by Ender Gürol as Kutsal Sığınak (1961); then by Özar Sunar as Lekeli Günler (1967) and finally by Necla Aytür as Tapınak (2007). Among Faulkner’s fifteen books which have been translated into Turkish thus far, Sanctuary is the only one with three translations in total. The translational process will be described to understand the rationale behind translators’ decisions within the context of translation studies.

Abstract This paper looks into the issue of Swedish-Polish translationese as a manifestation of the Swedish centre impact on languages in the world via translation. The term “translationese” is used to describe a specific language created in translated texts, among other things in Swedish-to-Polish translation. Such a language may be postulated to influence contemporary Polish in some domains due to abundant translations of Swedish literature in Poland in recent years. What features can be then ascribed to the Swedish-Polish translationese, not only from a lexical but from a grammatical point of view as well? The paper addresses this question thorough an analysis of a Swedish literary text and its 33 Polish non-professional translations, which are assumed to maximize the tension between Swedish and Polish in translation underlying the development of translationese. However, the intention is not to characterize such a language as a whole, but to test some hypotheses in its delimitation. The propounded hypothesis is that the occurrence of a postulated feature in the majority of the collected translations may be seen as an indicator of this feature’s existence in the Swedish- Polish translationese as such. The following features are identified: frequent use of short sentences, possessive pronouns in an NP, underspecified expressions and repetitions of lexical items, as well as desolation of fixed phrases. The presented research may be an impute to a broader corpus-based contrastive study.

This article explores the English translations of contemporary Ukrainian war poetry featured in the two anthologies Lysty z Ukrainy (Letters from Ukraine, 2016) and Words for War: New Poems from Ukraine (2017), through the prism of Jacques Derrida’s concept of “relevant.” It argues that although the economy of the original poems could not always be sustained, these translations nonetheless remain relevant primarily thanks to what they do rather than what they say. After contextualizing the recent (re)emergence of war poems as a genre of Ukrainian literature and providing an overview of the two translation anthologies, the article compares the Ukrainian originals with their English translations and discusses the various translation challenges. It then returns to Derrida’s own case study to extend the modifier “relevant” beyond its “economic” parameters to apply it more broadly to translation’s socio-political significance. It concludes with a discussion of how the two anthologies in question reflect the state of the reception of contemporary Ukrainian literature in the English-speaking world and how the translations they feature inform our understanding of the (un)translatability of poetry.

This article reports on a contrastive descriptive study of learner translations into Basque and Spanish of the same source text originally written in English. It is a preliminary case study with a twofold aim: first, to bring to contrast translations into different target languages (TLs) that have been produced under the same circumstances; and two, to identify and test the usefulness of corpus metadata in the interpretation of the translation product. The study was conducted within the framework of the MUST (MUltilingual Student Translation) project. Accordingly, all learner translations were first aligned, and then annotated with regard to three different error categories: transfer, language, and meta-text. The juxtaposition and contrast of the translational phenomena identified in each target language showed that the Basque data set reveals more language-related problems, while the Spanish data set features slightly more transfer-related errors. In interpreting the results, we benefited from the learners’ metadata our MUST corpora are enriched with. In particular, we observed that those learners who considered Basque to be their one and only mother tongue performed the best in terms of language.

Translations are invaluable sources for contrastive research. Yet they possess specific linguistic features, which arise from the nature of translation as a form of language contact. This paper explores some aspects of the specificity of translated texts: social and cognitive determinants of translations are briefly discussed, and the linguistic consequences are evaluated in view of recent findings of corpus research based on translational corpora, parallel as well as monolingual comparable corpora. It is argued that we cannot hope to ‘purify’ translational data so as to have them reflect two fully independent languages, unless we sacrifice the use of naturally-occurring data. Translational corpora are biased for genre, because translation situations are asymmetrical, and they are biased for equivalence, because the situation necessitates a search for equivalence more than might be natural in spontaneous production. However, translation and other language contact are ubiquitous in our globalized world; thus entirely independent, ‘pure’ languages are more illusory than real, thus hardly worth hankering after.

Abstract In any study of translations one must first decide what is to be counted as a “translation” and how such things are to be found, usually through recourse to bibliographical databases. We propose that, starting from the maximalist view that translations are potentially everywhere, various distribution processes impose a series of selective filters thanks to which some translations are more easily identified and accessible than others. The study of translation must be aware of these prior filters, and must know how to account for them, and sometimes how to overcome them. Research processes then necessarily impose their own selective filters, which may reduce or extend the number and kinds of translations given by prior filters. We present three research projects where the play of prior and research filters is very different. For one-off large-scale relational hypotheses, the Index Translationum is found to be relatively cost-efficient. For more detailed objects such as translation flows from Spanish into French in a specific period, a book-industry database offers significant advantages. And for a study marked by a paucity of texts, as is the case of translation from Korean into English following the Korean War, a combination of databases is necessary, the most useful turning out to be Amazon.

This article explores the translation of poetic rhythm: not the rhythm of the source text, but the rhythm of the translational act itself. This re-conception of translation’s rhythmic task is enabled by a translation designed for the polyglot, rather than for the monoglot, reader. In this new understanding of translational process, rhythm not only embodies the perceptual and cognitive experience of the translating subject, it also makes more intimate the relationship between language and voice, the linguistic and the paralinguistic. Furthermore, it has as much to do with the space of translation, its distribution on the page, as with its changing temporal modes. The translator, then, does not translate the rhythm of a text so much as a text’s capacity for rhythm, and that capacity includes both espousing the perspective of a translating ‘I’ and releasing what is not linguistically manifest in the source text. These propositions are tested in two translations of Leconte de Lisle’s ‘Midi’.

This thesis focused on studying the subtitles of idioms found in the movie, Inside Out (2015), specifically the idioms uttered by Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear, and Disgust. The writer used the following theories by Newmark (2001) to analyze the data—Translation Procedures to sort out the translations, and Translation Criticisms to evaluate the appropriateness of the translations. Through this study, the writer aimed to find the most frequently used translation procedure for idioms in Inside Out, and the appropriateness of its translations. After analyzing the data, the writer concluded Functional Equivalent as the most frequently used translation procedures for idioms found in Inside Out by producing 23 out of 39 translations. Functional Equivalent also produced mainly appropriate translations with 20 translations being appropriate. In conclusion, Functional Equivalent is the most recommended procedure to translate idioms, because it produces referentially and pragmatically accurate, semantically adequate, and natural translations. Using Geling Yan’s The Banquet Bug and its Chinese translations as a case study, this article attempts to explore what I term “migrating literature” in a transnational and translational framework. Translation is reconceptualised at three levels: contextual, paratextual and textual. This article will first of all examine the very translational nature of immigrant writing from a contextualized reading. It will then look at how paratextual matters re-frame immigrant writing and sometimes impose meaning by analyzing two key paratextual elements, title and front cover. At the end, the gain and loss of meanings will be discussed at the textual level, with an emphasis on the ideological and cultural implications. It also points out the possibility of incorporating readings from translations in other languages and cultures, or translations in other media forms, into the framework of migrating literature.

Between Heaven and Hell: Roman Kołakowski’s Poetry and His Translations of The Tiger Lillies Songs of The Tiger Lillies, a “punk cabaret” group from London, entered the Polish- speaking culture mostly through the translations by Roman Kołakowski. Translation formed just one of many fields of artistic activity of Kołakowski, who was also a poet, a songwriter, a performer, and a theatre director. There exists, however, a striking contrast between the style of the Kołakowski’s own oeuvre and his translation choices. His poetry is mostly religious, patriotic, marked by a solemn tone and elevated register, while The Tiger Lillies delight in ridicule, irony, and perversion, mocking religion in an almost blasphemous way. The paper is an attempt at analysing this contrast and searching for its assumed sources. The target texts are found to be marked by significant semantic and stylistic modifications when compared to the original songs. Amplification of religious tropes and of negative views on modern society is identified as the main form of the translator’s interventions. Based on the comparison of Kołakowski’s translations with his own poetry, it is posited that their ostensible discrepancy may be explained by perceiving the translations as a subsidiary field of artistic expression, where the translator pursues his interests in grimmer aspects of morality and society, expressing them in a form that would not be coherent with his own poetry. Consequently, Kołakowski’s translations of The Tiger Lillies’ songs are considered appropriations in a sense that the translational choices are directed by the translator’s own interests, ideological stance, and sensibilities, rather than by any attempted equivalence with the source texts. It is to be hoped that the paper will form an in itation to further investigations of translational agency in the field of song translation.

This paper has adopted a quantitative approach to carry out a linguistic study, within the theoretical framework of dependency grammar. Translation is a process where source language and target language interact with each other. The present study aims at exploring the feasibility of mean dependency distance as a metric for automated translation quality assessment. The current research hypothesized that different levels of translation are significantly different in the aspect of mean dependency distance. Data of this study were based on the written translation in Parallel Corpus of Chinese EFL Learners which was composed of translations from Chinese EFL learners in various topic. The translations were human-scored to determine the levels of translation, according to which the translations were categorized. Our results indicated that: (1) senior students perform better in translation than junior students, and mean dependency distance of translations from senior group is significantly shorter than the junior; (2) high quality translations yield shorter mean dependency distance than the low quality translations; (3) mean dependency distance of translations is moderately correlated with the human score. The resultant implication suggests the potential for mean dependency distance in differentiating translations of different quality.

Abstract The present paper deals with culture-specific items as a translational problem. It is based on two Polish translations of four Swedish books from the famous detective series by Maj Sjöwall and Per Wahlöö. The aim of the study is to analyze some of the practices employed by two Polish translators against the translation methods proposed by Newmark (1988), Svane (2002) and Ingo (2009). For this purpose a number of highly specific cultural items have been collected and the methods applied by translators have been identified. The analysis has shown a big difference between translators in dealing with culture-specific items. The first translator, Maria Olszańska, adopts such translation methods as calque translation, hyperonym, functional equivalent, paraphrase and omission. The other translator, Halina Thylwe, prefers transference and calque translation combined with additional explanations, either in the main part of the text or in footnotes. The methods employed by both translators are a result of choosing between global translation strategies domestication and foreignization (Venuti 1995). Domestication, adopted in the older translations, minimizes the strangeness of the Swedish text to the Polish readers, whereas foreignization in the newer translations retains the foreignness of the original.

With the wide application of artificial intelligence represented by deep learning in natural language-processing tasks, the automated scoring of translations has also advanced and improved. This study aims to determine if the BERT-assist system can reliably assess translation quality and identify high-quality translations for potential recognition. It takes the Han Suyin International Translation Contest as a case study, which is a large-scale and influential translation contest in China, with a history of over 30 years. The experimental results show that the BERT-assist system is a reliable second rater for massive translations in terms of translation quality, as it can effectively sift out high-quality translations with a reliability of r = 0.9 or higher. Thus, the automated translation scoring system based on BERT can satisfactorily predict the ranking of translations according to translation quality and sift out high-quality translations potentially shortlisted for prizes.

Effective Chinese language translations that communicate clear and unbiased messages form the core fabric of peaceful relationships among people in society. Existing machine translations models like Google Translate, DeepL, Youdao Translate or even LLM sometimes generate Chinese-to-English translations filled with prejudice against females. The prejudice-prone Chinese-to-English translations are inherited from some terms in the source texts which are merely norms inherited from Chinese history and may not indicate female discrimination in terms of context. Such a gap must be eradicated to minimize gender biases and gender disparity in Chinese-to-English translation. Addressing the aforementioned gap, this study employs deconstructive translation theory to demonstrate the translational phenomenon of the remaining unnecessary female discrimination expression from the source Chinese to the target English language through the lens of feminism. The study also proposes an improved model of machine translation to hi-jack the gender-biased expression by identifying and modifying the gender-biased expressions in Chinese-to-English texts from a context perspective. The findings and application of the research will improve the well-being of females by preventing the cultural flow of gender biases, and contribute to creating a more amicable language environment for females.

Aim. The study aimed at establishing whether there are any significant differences between the two translations of the same novels: one published unofficially and anonymously on the Internet, and the other published officially by the publisher. The elements taken into consideration in the analysis were: the culture-bound elements, the vulgar terms, and syntactic calques.&#x0D; Methods. The theoretical part of the research is based on the refraction theory by A. Lefevere (1992), according to whom translation is a process regulated by a system in which it functions. In opposition to the regulated translational activity stands unofficial Internet translation. The comparative analysis of the translations was further developed with the application the ‘foreignisation’and domestication dichotomy proposed by L. Venuti (1995).&#x0D; Results and conclusion. The results of the study imply that there are significant differences between the official and unofficial translations; the official translations aim at domesticating techniques, whereas the unofficial translations are more likely to apply ‘foreignising’ techniques, even at the cost of breaking cultural values of the target culture.&#x0D; Cognitive value. The Internet has become an inseparable part of modern people’s daily life, yet Internet activities are still not regulated and researched to such a degree as ‘real world’ ones. The study aims at showing differences between the Internet and official translation, however, it is not able to answer the question regarding the roots of these differences. Further inquiries would be necessary in this case – if even possible.

Interreal translations involve the translation of objects, spaces, and subjects across media-generated virtual spaces, including virtual and augmented realities. Grounded in intersemiotic translation, the paper proposes a typology of interreal translations, categorizing them as vertical (between the primary reality and alternative realities) and horizontal (between different alternative realities). These translations play a significant role in our diverse mediascape and require a multidisciplinary approach, drawing from fields such as Human Computer Interaction, Games Research, Semiotics, Anthropology, and Translation Studies. This exploration of interreal translations offers a promising avenue for future research, reflecting the dynamic evolution of the discipline and the growing importance of digital and virtual contexts.

This semi-autobiographical article reflects on the discipline known as Translation Studies from the point of view of the author, who was a full-time Canadian government translator from 1974 to 2014, but also taught and wrote about translation. The narrative begins with the emergence of Translation Studies in Canada and in Europe and continues through the present neoliberal era, with reflection on a variety of topics including the English name of the discipline, the lack of definition of an object of study, the original role of the journal Meta, and the notion of translation as applied linguistics. The last section considers two fictive scenarios in which Translation Studies does not emerge, and translation is studied, right from the start, in ways much more closely linked to the translation profession, with a focus on translators rather than translations, and therefore on translational production rather than the analysis of completed translations.

The aims of this study are to find out: (1) the types of equivalence translation used by students of the fifth semester of English Language Education Study Program, Tanjungpura University in the academic year of 2023/2024 in translating English idioms into Indonesian based on Newmark’s theory of translation, (2) the accuracy and the readability of their translations. This research employed a descriptive quantitative design, with data collected through a translation test. The result of the study showed that out of 200 translations produced by 20 students, 173 translations (86.5%) were classified as translation equivalence, with 74 translations (37%) categorized as semantic equivalence, and 99 translations (49.5%) as communicative translation. Furthermore, based on the categorization table, both the accuracy and readability of the students’ translations were rated as good, with average scores of 22.35 (74.5%) for accuracy and 23.9 (79.66%) for readability. These results suggest that while students moderately prioritize meaning over form, challenges remain in maintaining both accuracy and naturalness of the translation.

This study analyses two Turkish translations of the famous poem Annabel Lee written by Edgar Allan Poe by using Raymond van den Broeck’s translation criticism approach. Translations selected for the corpus of the study are the first Turkish translation of Annabel Lee by Melih Cevdet Anday and a recent one by Osman Tuğlu. Within the framework of the analysis, the study aims to determine the translational decisions taken by both translators from a comparative and descriptive point of view according to the model in question. Bearing in mind the analytic functions of the translations, it also aims to make an objective translation criticism. The article consists of three parts. The first part introduces the translation criticism model suggested by van den Broeck as the method of the current study. The model bases itself on a systemic description of translational shifts, as suggested by Anton Popovič, to reveal the norms of the target culture in translating poetry. The second part provides background information on the source and the target texts. First, it introduces the source text and its poet along with his style. Secondly, it provides information about the translators of both target texts along with their sense of poetry and translating poetry. The third part analyses the examples selected for the corpus of the study in their respective categories. By doing so, this part aims to reveal recurrent translational decisions taken along with their reasons. The results of the analysis suggest that the translators’ approaches differ from one another in terms of source and target-orientedness, proving that translation traditions have changed considerably in the target culture.

Ossianic translations in the Hungary of the1790s were the occasion of heated debates between different schools of translation. Michael Denis, Ossian's first German-language translator, was known in Hungary primarily as a bardic poet, bibliographer, and also as a Jesuit monk. He had personal connections with, and was a great inspiration for, Hungarian ‘Latinate poets’ who knew Denis’ German and Latin hexameter renderings. This essay suggests that it was through Denis’ Jesuit connections that Ossianic poetry first reached the Hungarian reading public and was interpreted in the context of Latinate classicism. It then outlines how contemporary foreign translations of Ossian contributed to translational debates in the pages of the journal Magyar Museum, which also published János Batsányi's hexameter translation of The Death of Oscar.

In translation training, translation revision to produce a high quality translation is an integral part of the translation process. Improvement on the translations produced by students during training are typically carried out by students themselves in the form of self-revision. The present empirical study aims to assess the improvement of student translations’ quality in light of target readership assessment and feedback. It further sets out to measure student’s attitudes towards target readership feedback in terms of effectiveness in assisting them to improve their translations. The findings reveal that target readership feedback had a considerable effect on improving the quality of student translations which made them more vigilant to analyzing target text context. Moreover, student translators perceived target readership feedback as valuable in improving their self-revised translations to enhance the quality of their translations. The study recommends employing target readership feedback as part of student translation training.
