Texto completoThis paper presents to Portuguese-speaking readers the translation of the Creole work Antan denfance, by Patrick Chamoiseau. For better understanding of linguistic and extralinguistic aspects of this book, we developed an initial study, divided into three chapters, which follows this path: historical context, author and work. The first chapter covers the History of Martinique, from the earliest inhabitants to the French colonization, highlighting the main consequences of the colonization movement to the individuals, the space and the language. In the second chapter, we have compiled a profile of the author, where we introduce some of his intellectual production, his participation in the créolité literary movement and his literary project, in order to emphasize his stylistic peculiarities. The third chapter intends to examine the skills necessary to translate culturally marked works, by analyzing not only our main choices of translation, but also the most elementary aspect of this work: rooting in oral tradition.

Texto completoDespite the diversity of the Caribbean territories, they all share the same culture: Creoleness. In light of this, the present research proposes to study the linguistic synergy that is evident in a comparative study of Creole proverbs from the francophone and Anglophone Caribbean. Apart from the controversial issue of the origin of these proverbs, the main aim is to find the convergent points as well as any relationships between the proverbs, the role that literature plays in their preservation and their intra- and inter-linguistic transmission. A study of the impact of globalization on the translation of Caribbean texts, which are a part of oral tradition, will help to understand the phenomena underlining their transmission. Not aiming to contradict Berman’s theory on the destruction of vernacular links, this work will try to show that translating Creole proverbs in the context of Creoleness offers the best possible solution in light of cultural and regional factors

Texto completoThis is a grounded theory study of how scholar-practitioners simultaneously help clients generate results and create new knowledge. Through a set of 41 interviews, it examines the roles of scholar-practitioners in organization development and medical translational research, compares the strategies and tactics they use in each field, and considers how they renew themselves professionally and personally. It shows how these professionals perform varying combinations of three roles: research, teaching and applied field work. They have developed different work habits, ways of thinking and even ways of being than their colleagues who focus on just one of those areas in either field, and have a set of personal characteristics including being agile/adaptive, collaborative, holistic, passionate and wise, which empower their use of self in helping their clients or patients. It shows how strategies and tactics are employed in the translation of theory to practice and vice versa, which had not been done previously, and develops a new Knowledge-Results Circular Flow Model to connect all the aspects of their work with their clients to generate client-determined results and new knowledge in an ongoing iterative process. Last, but not least, it shows that scholar-practitioners in these two fields are much more similar than different, and can learn from each other to strengthen both the knowledge they generate via their research, and the client/patient results that are the focus of their work.

This MA thesis concerns the commentated translations to Brazilian Portuguese of twelve poems, from the works The Charm and For Love Poems 1950-1960, by the USA poet Robert Creeley. It is composed by three chapters: a historical and literary contextualization and a critical reflection on Robert Creeley’s work; a reflection upon the theoretical and methodological aspects of translation; and, finally, the commented translations. There are also an Introduction, a Conclusion and a Bibliography. The first chapter gives a historical and theoretical overview on Creeley. In the light of theorists like Altieri, Hallberg and Perkins, some considerations are made on his style, and on his political ideals. A historical contextualization of the main social movements and ideals in that time, as well as his main influences are presented, considering issues as free verse, the Open Verse Poets style, the variety of word play to create sense (like “enjambement”, alliteration and metonymy), as well as political questions involving the US citizen identity, the criticism on USA imperialism and capitalism. The second chapter brings a theoretical and sociological reflection upon the translation work: based on the assumption that a reflection upon language before the reflection upon translation is necessary, this chapter comments, firstly, on language in light of Bakhtin utterances theory. Next, considering the philosophical contributions of Spivak and Venuti as well as the sociological contributions of Souza Santos, this chapter comments upon: how translation happens, under which aspects and how to do it, pointing to the fact that translation is a cultural conflict, a confrontation that can only be solved under a common knowledge space. The third chapter, finally, is about the commentaded translations in which it is finally made a contact with the word play and the various meanings that Creeley builds. All the occurrences of translation problems are discussed and the found solutions are justified. The conclusion of this MA thesis reinforces the idea of how difficult It is to translate poetry, especially Creeley’s, and the necessity of a constant intellectual work.
Xavier, Paulo Alexandre Arruda. "Ser Assistente Social : tradução parcial comentada de Becoming a Social Worker, de Viviene E. Cree". Master's thesis, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/10400.3/5983.
ABSTRACT: In this master’s dissertation we carried out a commented translation, from English to Portuguese, of a part of Becoming a Social Worker, by Viviene E. Cree. The main aim of this dissertation is to identify the challenges and obstacles that arose during the translation process, as well as the strategies used as solutions in each one of the selected cases. Considering this text is a hybrid one and it combines both a technical and scientific component from the social work field with an autobiographical writing, we selected some cases to comment, based on their characteristics – culturally marked vocabulary, cultural references, technical/specialized vocabulary, and colloquial speech –, which led us to carefully consider them during the translation process. This dissertation begins with the theoretical review that underpins the choices made during the translation process, as well as its analysis and comment.
