The article analyzes Louis Adamic's early translation phase that included, apart from his translations from Slovenian, also Croatian literature. His translations had a double function: to help him improve his English and to promote him as a writer. He randomly chose some Croatian short stories which he partly translated and partly adapted. He also did his best to introduce the authors to the American readers. The stories were published in American magazines but Adamic's repeated effort to publish a book of Yugoslav translations sadly failed. In spite of this, he was an important groundbreaker in the field paving the way for other translators who followed in his wake.

Chinese translations of U.S. literature manifest a shift from the third-world internationalism and anti-Western and anti-capitalist politics of the 1950s toward a diminished rhetorical antagonism in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. Because translation introductions are instrumental in introducing Chinese readers to the social context of U.S. literature, we surveyed a broad sample of prefaces. Based on this survey, we theorize China-U.S. translation relations within a world system; examine the ideological character of post-Revolution translation introductions to American literature; and identify shifting ideological tides following the Cultural Revolution.

In a recent article, I argued that Native American literature, as a minor literature according to Deleuze and Guattari, is a great candidate for being translated in a minoritizing way, as proposed by Venuti. Since this literature is very popular in Spain –13 translations published in the 2010s–, I analysed the most recent translations of Sherman Alexie’s, Louise Erdrich’s and N. Scott Momaday’s novels and concluded that they were aimed at entertainment, at linguistic and syntactic fluency, and at over-refined stylistics. This kind of translation means, hence, the erasure of indigenous cultural and literary aspects from the target texts and the hiding of the socio-political implications of the source texts. In the present article, I insist on the idea that Venuti’s ‘minoritizing translation’ can be adapted to attend to the minor literature features of American Indian books and, consequently, to produce culturally and socio-politically engaged translations. After revising Venuti’s proposal and Tymoczko’s criticism on it, I present a brief description of the translations of works by Alexie, Erdrich, Momaday and Zitkala-Ša, all published during the 2010s. Then, I detail the precise strategies that would help to emphasize the specific characteristics of this literature, and I compare passages from the published translations with my alternative minoritizing translations.

The rise and development of Chinese-American literature is closely related to the socio-cultural context in which the subject of its creation resides. Because the works contain a lot of Chinese elements, the writing of Chinese American literature often entails translation from the perspective of cultural studies. This kind of translation does not refer to the simple conversion on linguistic level, but the adaptation of Chinese culture, Chinese history and Chinese experience, which is a kind of invisible cultural translation. Chinese American writers have applied Chinese traditional culture to their works and achieved success in the target audience, which provides effective solutions and rich experience for the dissemination of traditional Chinese culture. This paper intends to study Chinese American literature from the perspective of cultural translations, and its enlightenment on the dissemination of traditional Chinese culture overseas.

Ideology has always influenced translation, yet this fact became a topic of scholarly research only in the 1990s. The working of ideology in literary translations most often manifests itself as a conflict of value systems. From vast reservoir of foreign sources, the native axiology absorbs values that it needs to sustain its culture. It is not a coincidence that Anglo-American literature, propagating ideas of democracy and individual freedom, became popular in Poland in the first half of the nineteenth-century when Poland did not exist as a state. Only a century later, American literature was the most popular of all foreign literatures in pre-1939 Poland. World War II changed this situation, and the Soviet-controlled apparatchiks favored translations that were “politically correct.” Yet, because of their connections with earlier revolutionary movements, avant-garde Anglo-American writers were often published during the communist regime, for example Virginia Woolf, whose novels were standardized to appeal to the tastes of popular readers. After Poland regained independence in 1989, the national book market was privatized and commercialized, and avant-garde literature needed advertising to get noticed. Cormack McCarthy’s novels were translated into Polish on the wave of popularity of the Coen brothers movie based on No Country for Old Men. The two Polish translations of McCarthy’s novel try to sound like a typical hard-boiled realistic fiction. This is where the ideology of consumerism meets the ideology of communism: literature is a means to sustain – and control – a cultural monolith, where all differences are perceived as possible threats to social order.

This article studies the translation of Brazilian literature in the United States between 1930 and the end of the 1960s. It analyzes political, historical and economic factors that influenced the publishing market for translations in the U.S., focusing on the editorial project of Alfred A. Knopf, the most influential publisher for Latin American literature in the U.S. during this period, and Harriet de Onís, who translated approximately 40 works from Spanish and Portuguese into English. In addition to translating authors such as João Guimarães Rosa and Jorge Amado, de Onís worked as a reader for Knopf, recommending texts for translation. The translator’s choices reflected the demands of the market and contributed to forming the canon of Brazilian literature translated in the United States.

Comparing three Chinese translations of Amy Tan’s novel The Kitchen God’s Wife (1991), this article explores gender issues in Chinese translations of Chinese American women’s literature from a feminist perspective. Using the feminist concept of female alienation, it explores how feminist consciousness and sexual alienation caused by marital sexual violence in the source text are expressed in the Chinese translations, and how far the translations achieve (feminist) translation equivalence. Special attention is paid to the translators’ gender consciousness and ideologies, as reflected in their translations, in order to explore the role played by gender in the translation of women’s writing.

Brazilian literature is traditionally understood to have developed in relative isolation from the literatures of Hispanophone Latin America, inhabiting a peripheral cultural space within the already peripheral sphere of Latin American literature. Perhaps the most striking example of this traditional conception is the commonly held assumption of the complete literary-historical separation of two of Latin America’s most renowned fiction writers: the Brazilian Joaquim Maria Machado de Assis and the Argentine Jorge Luis Borges. Machado de Assis, in particular, is often regarded as inhabiting a double cultural periphery, as both a Latin American and a Brazilian, who, furthermore, wrote in a “minor” language, never traveled outside of his own country, and rarely ever left his native Rio de Janeiro. Another enduring belief, tangential to the tale of Brazil’s cultural isolation, is that Machado de Assis’s work went untranslated, by and large, until about half a century after his death. Yet the early translation history of Machado’s work offers a fascinating insight into the literary ties that connect his work to the dominant literary cultures of the Americas and Europe and provides an intriguing literary-historical link between Machado de Assis and Jorge Luis Borges. Curiously, the connection between Machado and Borges, whose countries share a border, follows a route of translational cultural exchange through France and Spain, and involves a prolific translator who was both the first Spanish translator of Machado’s short fiction and the mentor of a young Borges: Rafael Cansinos Assens. Thus, the early history of Machado’s fiction in translation demonstrates that Machado is a much less peripheral figure than previously imagined, and that, through Machado, Brazilian literature is more intimately intertwined with the literatures of Hispanophone Latin America and the cultural capitals of Europe than critics and scholars have recognized.

The paper reviews instances of intralingual translation between British and American English. Its main focus is the translation of literary texts aimed and children and young readers which were written in Britain and then altered before being released on the American market. Examples of cases where originally American texts were altered for British readers, a less common trend, are also provided. The text explores typical differences between British and American English, the position of children’s literature and the motivations behind the changes, examples of alteration to titles of books, changes that trigger changes of larger portions of texts, alterations to the style of the books, and areas where the authors of the translations corrected authors’ mistakes. Most of the examples are based on previously published works which analyzed intralingual translation between British and American English in children’s literature, with some taken from unpublished research by the author. The paper was written with the hope that it will help create more awareness of the existence of such translations, especially since in most cases no information that such changes were made is provided within or outside the literary texts discussed in this paper.

This article presents the translations of Spanish and Latin American authors into Lithuanian during the 50 years of Soviet occupation (1940–1990). The purpose of this research is to explore the legacy of these translations within the context of preventive censorship practiced in the Soviet Union. Preventive censorship involves selectively filtering books and authors for inclusion or exclusion from publication due to ideological or political considerations (cf. Leonardi 2008). The article addresses three main questions: (1) What was the volume of Spanish-language literature in the overall corpus of translations in Soviet Lithuania? (2) Which Spanish-language authors were accessible to Lithuanian readers during the period under consideration? And (3) What factors might have influenced their selection for publication in Lithuanian translation? An attempt is made to describe the corpus of translations from Spanish into Lithuanian, with a particular focus on the selection criteria to be met for inclusion of these literary works in the Soviet canon of foreign literature.

Translation of English passive constructions into Vietnamese has been of interest to scholars and researchers worldwide. However, not much research has been done into translation equivalence of the English passives in Vietnamese. This paper aims to explore into the translation equivalence of English passive constructions in Vietnamese in literary discourse. To reach this aim, data were collected from classic works of American and English literature and their translations in Vietnamese. The data were further analysed and classified, applying Widdowson’s (1979) trichotomy of translation equivalence. The research findings show five strategies for translating the English passives into Vietnamese with this order of frequency: activization, passivization, ergativization, adjectivalization, and copularization, and the translation equivalence includes both structural and semantic. The paper also attempts to explain the reasons behind the preference of activization strategy.

The article analyzes the reasons for Hemingway’s powerful impact on the Soviet culture from the 1930s through the early 1980s. I suggest that this influence was created not so much by Hemingway himself as by the way his works were translated and presented to the readers in the Soviet Union. In particular, the article examines the style of translation employed by a cohesive collective of Russian-Soviet translators (the Kashkíntsy) in their translations of Hemingway’s works that came to be identified with the “Soviet school of translation.” The translators used a distinctive set of linguostylistic means consisting, to a significant extent, in enhancing the expressive properties of the Hemingway originals in their Russian translations. The resultant translated texts not only affected the behavior of a significant part of especially the male population of the Soviet Union but also set the stage for establishing a distinctive “American style” of writing within the mainstream Soviet literature. In other words, the Soviet translators collectively invented Hemingway’s style that made their translated texts sparkle in Russian.

Abstract In the years leading up to the 1960s and in the beginning of that decade the system of non-canonized literature in Hebrew was inundated with translations from English. These were usually characterized by strong interference of that language. In the system of canonized literature, on the contrary, linguistic interference in translations from English was rather restricted. The gap between the two systems in this respect gradually narrowed during the 1970s. The dynamics in translated literature as regards the interference of English may be explained as deriving from processes of change in Israeli culture and in its redeployment with respect to the West, especially with respect to American culture.

In this paper we have the opportunity to trace path of Bulgakov’s novel through Spain to Latin America and, in particular, to Mexico, since in most cases, Latin American countries first become acquainted with foreign works of literature through translations into Spanish from Spain, which are made for large publishing houses such as “Alianza”, “Mondadori”, “Cátedra”.

Abstract Samuel Beckett’s self-avowed slight acquaintance with the Spanish language did not prevent him from tackling the translation of a poem by the Chilean Gabriela Mistral, as well as a whole anthology of Mexican poetry. Little attention has been paid to this sideline in Beckett’s career. This paper contextualizes Beckett’s involvement in these two UNESCO projects and shows, with recourse to his translation manuscripts, the intensity of the author’s work despite his distaste for these commissions.

The article is mainly devoted to the recent publications of translated Russian literature in Slovakia. In the first part of the article the situation of the 1990s which followed the decline of state management in editorial policy lasted from 1948 till 1989 is discussed. The influence of economic factors on book market turned most of the publishing houses to Western European and American literature. Thus in the last decade of the twentieth century mainly russian classics (Alexander Pushkin, Anton Chekhov, etc.) and the texts that could not be issuied until 1989 (Alexander Solzhenitsyn, Iosif Brodsky, “Doctor Zhivago” by Boris Pasternak) were published. The situation changed only in the new millennium, which was inspired by the phenomenon of the new generation of readers whom the available translations of russian literature were no longer suffucient, especially since they did not encounter the old ideologized approach to the selection of texts. Thanks to this, in recent years, Russian literature, including the most modern – Eugene Vodolaskin, Guzel Yakhina, etc., – again has managed to occupy the place in the Slovak cultural space that rightfully belongs to it.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the translation strategies employed by Iranian male and female translators when translating taboo words, particularly F**k words, from English to Persian in the self-help book The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F**k by Mark Manson. The study aims to identify the most frequently used strategies and examine whether there are significant differences between male and female translators in their use of these strategies. The study applies Davoodi's (2009) translation model as the theoretical framework to analyze the translation strategies used by Iranian translators in translating taboo words from English to Persian. The results show that both male and female translators predominantly used Euphemism as the primary strategy, indicating a shared understanding of the need for linguistic politeness and cultural sensitivity. However, significant differences emerged in the use of Substitution, Censorship, and Taboo for Taboo strategies, suggesting that gender influences translation choices and strategies. Male translators tended to rely more on the Substitution strategy, while female translators favored the Censorship strategy, carefully navigating the expression of taboo words. The Taboo for Taboo strategy was used more frequently by male translators, in contrast to female translators who used it the least. These results contribute to our understanding of how gender influences translation choices, suggesting that cultural and societal factors may play a role in the strategies employed by translators. The study offers valuable insights for translators, particularly those working with contemporary American self-help literature, by highlighting the importance of cultural sensitivity and adaptability in language translation.

In the international system of translations, English has been described as playing a “hypercentral” role. At the same time, translation is seen as playing a marginal role in the Anglo-American cultural and publishing scenarios. The present paper is aimed at revisiting this idea. After an overview of recent studies that have examined the role and significance of translated titles in the publishing markets of English-speaking countries, the paper reports on an exploratory analysis of records available in a database that collects information on books in translation published or distributed in the US starting from 2008. The analysis indicates that translation is enjoying a renewed attention in the US market, in terms of both the number of translated titles and the distribution of translations across different genres.

The paper explores the serialised novels and stories in the two leading Estonian daily newspapers, Päewaleht and Postimees, the majority of which were translations. The approach, combining book and translation history, is driven by the two issues debated in the media in 1900–1940: the desire to distance from the dominant German and Russian cultural influences and search for a new orientation; the categories of literature serialised in newspapers including the proportion of popular literature (genres like mystery, thrillers, romance, etc.) and the concern of intellectuals about its growth. The study uses the years 1906–1911 and 1928–1933 as a sample for content analysis of the feuilleton sections of the two newspapers in order to examine the changes in source literatures and the category of literature. The results demonstrate that German literature still dominated the serialised fiction translations at the beginning of the century, although many other literatures were used as sources. In the independent Republic of Estonia, in the 1920s and 1930s, Anglo-American literature occupied the leading position in accordance with the general cultural orientation. Still, German had not become marginal, and the range of other source literatures was quite diverse. The proportion of popular literature, mystery novels, and romance above all, started to increase in Päewaleht since 1906, becoming dominant in the 1920s and 1930s. Postimees also started to include some mystery and thriller novels in the selection, but in general, remained true to its preference for literary fiction. Thus, the agency of the Editors-in-Chief and editorial boards can be seen in the choice of works. The overall abundance of translated popular fiction in the book market and periodicals caused the protests of writers and educational circles that culminated with the suggestion to introduce a translation tax, which was, however, abandoned.

In this work we want to show the strong links between Spanish-American and Serbian writers, through the books translated from Spanish and works written in Serbian. Assuming that each writer is above all a good reader, and considering the importance of translation for literature in general, we have investigated the influence of Borges, Cortázar, Fuentes, García Márquez and Vargas Llosa on Serbian writers since the 1950s until today. Through authentic testimonies - interviews made for this research - and the reviews and analysis of books and particular texts influenced by the authors of the boom, we will present a creative variety and authentic literary creation of a small country with many translations and dedicated writers, and show that the great impact of Spanish-American literature in Serbia began half a century ago and never ceased.

Scholars of American literature will be intrigued by evidence of his transformation from Russian author V. Sirin to American writer and university professor Vladimir Nabokov—including his first interview (in Russian) after arriving in New York City in 1940, his early book reviews (in English) for American journals, fascinating glimpses of his academic career at Wellesley and Cornell, and dozens of charmingly playful interviews from Lolita’s publication until his death. More than eight decades since Nabokov immigrated to the United States, there is still much to learn about his American literary career.

Abstract: Marian Fell Vans Agnew (1886–1935), a largely forgotten American translator of Russian literature, was among the first to introduce Anton Chekhov and Vladimir Korolenko to Anglophone audiences. As a teenager, Fell lived in Karaganda, Siberia (nowadays in Kazakhstan) with her family, and this experience inspired her to promote Russian culture after she returned to America. This article investigates Fell's collaboration with the Charles Scribner's Sons and Duffield & Co. publishing companies, analyses and contextualizes Fell's translations, and examines the critique of her works from the Russian school of criticism to provide an assessment of Fell's contribution to Russo-American intercultural relationships.

This study investigates the publication and reception of the Latin American boom literature in Sweden from 1960 to 1990, focusing on Julio Cortázar, Carlos Fuentes, Gabriel García Márquez and Mario Vargas Llosa. It analyses the extent of Swedish translations of their works and the type and amount of attention they received in the Swedish press. Using a bibliometric approach for the translations, and analysing press material on the authors from the evening papers Aftonbladet and Expressen, the study found that 258 of the 532 works translated from Spanish to Swedish during the investigated period were Latin American, with 52 (20%) by the feautured authors. The press material reveals that García Márquez was the most covered, especially around his 1982 Nobel Prize, and the assessment of his literature and public persona was generally positive. Fuentes received significant attention in the 1980s and was also favourably regarded. Vargas Llosa was introduced early on to the Swedish readership, but his literary work and political engagement elicited mixed reactions. Cortázar received the least press coverage, correlating with fewer translations and less public attention.

The considerations and arguments of this article were developed based on the information printed in Diário de Notícias, a newspaper from Salvador, Bahia, in Brazil, which states that Agnes Blake Poor was the first North-American woman to translate Brazilian literature into English. Poor edited the anthology Pan-American Poems (1918) that brought a collection of Latin-American poems in English translation. Brazil is represented by Gonçalves Dias, Bruno Seabra, the Portuguese Francisco Manuel de Nascimento, and a gypsy folk-song. Using the theoretical and methodological tools from Descriptive Translation Studies, the objective of this article is to analyse the political and literary dimensions in which the anthology was published in the United States and compare the source and target poems to pinpoint the translational norms. The results show that the governmental translation project was aimed to foster Pan-Americanism and to unite the Americas during war time, which was key to determine the choice of the poems and the translation norms.

The translations made by Ghevond Alishan have a special place in his multi-disciplinary scientific, literary, philological and pedagogical activities. Alishan translated these spiritual songs into grabar (Old Armenian) and the sacred songs included in the selection are very consistent with the classical manifestations of the Armenian medieval, especially official literature written in grabar. Among the American poets whose songs Alishan translated, the most notable is Henry Longfellow (1807-1882). He was one of Hovhannes Tumanian's favorite poets, of whom the latter made a number of translations. The American Lyre collection contains many excerpts from the Old and New Testaments of the Bible. The soul and soul sight are very important to the Christian religion. The wisdom that it is better to be blind in the eye than in the soul comes from Hermes the Great. The 5th century historian Yeghishe repeats this idea several times in his history.

Toni Morrison, the first African American female winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature, is certainly one of the modern artists whose novels have entered the world's modern literary canon. She is one of the most read novelists in the United States, where all of her novels have been bestsellers. However, only Song of Solomon and Beloved have so far been translated into Slovene. There have been several articles or essays written on Toni Morrison but most of them are simply translations of English articles; the only exception is a study by Jerneja Petrič. This paper presents the Slovene translation of Song ofSolomon by Jože Stabej and the articles written on Toni Morrison by Slovene critics. Jože Stabej is so far the only Slovene translator who has translated Toni Morrison. The author of this article uses some Slovene translations from the novel in comparison to the original to show the main differences appearing because of different grammatical structures of both languages and differences in the two cultures. The articles by Slovene critics are primarily resumes or translations of English originals and have been mainly published in magazines specializing in literature.

Translation is one of the most important channels in the diffusion of an author and his/her work in other cultures and literatures. It is essential when considering his/her reception, and specially when dealing between very distant cultures like in Eastern-Western relationships. Translation is always relevant in the image of a certain author abroad, since it is never a neutral and innocent activity, but a highly manipulatory one through the mediation process that it implies. From that point of view, the aim of this paper is to analyse the reception of Mahatma Gandhi in one of the most widely spoken languages in the world, that is Spanish, through the translations of his writings published in that language both for the Spanish and the Latin American audiences, as a contribution to the study of Gandhi's influence in the world literature.

For several years now, James Baldwin’s life, portrait, and work have enjoyed a central place in the public eye. Although social and audiovisual media have made significant contributions to Baldwin’s return to the cultural and political limelight, the circulation of his published writings remains a vital part of the author’s ubiquity. Moreover, since Baldwin’s omnipresence in bookstores transcends an American or even Anglophone context, this international and multilingual circulation contributes to Baldwin’s world literary standing, as befits the self-described “transatlantic commuter.” This article moves beyond the customary approach to Baldwin’s published success by tracing presently circulating European translations of his work. The article examines the historical developments in Baldwin’s European circulation-through-translation from the time of his death (1987) up until the present, including brief discussions of the French, Italian, and West German translations from the 1960s onward. Of special interest are the pioneering and dominant roles that French and Italian publishers have played since the late 1990s, and the acceleration in circulation that took place across the continent in the wake of the films I Am Not Your Negro and If Beale Street Could Talk. The article concludes with a few remarks on the translation strategies of several key publishers in France, Italy, Germany, and Romania.

When literature gets translated and published in the target market, the peritextual elements of the books get modified and updated because of commercial and aesthetic issues. If the translation involves identities very different from that of the target culture, then the peritexts offer a great amount of information about the ethnic representations that are accepted, welcome and customary as for the identities of the source culture and its members. This paper analyzes such a situation in relation to the Spanish translations of Native American written literature. By means of examining the peritexts of the available renditions in Spain, it is possible to establish if the publishing houses share a common image of Indianness, how it and its alternatives are used linguistically and visually, and what are the consequences of those cultural representations. This paper also includes a revision of the convergence of Translation Studies, Native American Studies and Imagology Studies in researching these renditions, and it stresses the importance of using this multidisciplinary point of view on the research materials.

AbstractFrom 1968 to 1969 the Argentine modernist Juan Gelman invented and translated into Spanish a contemporary from the United States, named Sidney West, who wrote about small-town mid-American life. Traducciones III: Los poemas de Sidney West (Translations III: The Poems of Sidney West) is a pseudotranslation—a text disguised as a translation that in fact has no corresponding original. While most critics identify Gelman's recourse to pseudotranslation as a personal undertaking, this essay examines the experiment for the first time within the inter-American Cold War context of the 1960s, locating pseudo/translation as an in/subordinate poetic protocol particularly well equipped for intervening in the soft-power mechanisms of US cultural imperialism—in ways that are both treasonous and collaborative. This essay recovers the anti-imperialist politics of the West poems, expands conversations on translation in Gelman's poetry, and proposes pseudo/translation as a new, bifocal mode of reading for texts that forge cross-cultural contact.

The main argument of the article is that literary translation assumed different roles in émigré periodicals: from serving educational purposes, through amplifying the diaspora’s cultural identity, to providing entertainment to their readership, and that all these roles con­formed to the political and ideological orientation and positioning of the newspaper and its editors. The article focuses on the newspaper Prosveta (The Enlightenment), a left-of-centre progressive newspaper published by the Slovene diaspora in the U. S., and the presence of literary translations in the period from its establishment in 1916 to 1933 when it began ap­pearing only five days a week and its circulation began to fall. We analyzed 5273 issues of Prosveta, identified all literary translations, and classified them into three categories. The results show that the choice of authors whose works were translated and published in the newspaper reflects the ideological positioning of the editors and newspaper, and blurs the dis­tinction between two categories of translated works: between the works selected for the educa­tion and those for the entertainment of Prosveta’ s readership.

In this article Safi Mahmoud Mahfouz investigates the current state of tragedy in the Arab theatre and suggests some of the reasons behind the lack of an authentic Arabic tragedy developed from the Aristotelian tradition. Through analyses of the few translations and adaptations into Arabic of Shakespearean and classical tragedy, he both confirms and questions the claims of non-Arabic scholars that ‘the Arab mind is incapable of producing tragedy’. While the wider theatre community has been introduced to a handful of the Arab world's most prominent dramatists in translation, many are still largely unknown and none has a claim to be a tragedian. Academic studies of Arabic tragedy are insubstantial, while tragedy, in the classical sense, plays a very minor role in Arab drama, the tendency of Arab dramatists being towards comedy or melodrama. This article analyses the novel An Unnecessary Woman (2013) by the American-Lebanese writer Rabih Alameddine from the perspective of multilingual selfhood, echoing Borges's vision of ‘writing as translation’ as it expands to considerations of literary translingualism. The narrator/protagonist of the novel, Aaliya Saleh, is a translator whose main occupation is translation into Arabic from the existing English and French translations: from literary West into East. The significance of the author's creative choice of what is referred to as a twice-removed translator is explored with the following questions: How, while navigating between two languages, cultures, and identities, is the multilingual individual experiencing the balancing act between the ‘translation’ and the ‘original’? To what extent are characters, generated by writers' translingual imagination, indeed creative (re)incarnations of the author's fragmented self? Is there such a thing as the fidelity to an original' for an immigrant (the author)? What can we learn about this translingual polyphony of voices when it comes from the area of political conflict and deepening economic/humanitarian crisis?

Signed and posted to the internet on July 6, 2012 in the months following the “Printemps érable” and leading up to Idle No More, “Mes lames de tannage” is one of Natasha Kanapé Fontaine’s most important slams. In analysing my English translation of this slam, published in Canadian Literature in 2016, this essay speaks to the relationship between Indigenous literatures and European languages. It participates in a conversation about what it means to translate French-language Indigenous literature from Quebec into English. Such translation enables Indigenous writers across North America to make links with each other and foster a broader interpretive community for their writing. Given the flow of Indigenous literature and critical thought from English into French over the past decades, thanks to publishing houses in France, the recent wave of translations from French into English and the sharing of French-language work mark a significant shift in the field. At the same time, the gesture of translating into English a writer who works primarily in French but is in the process of relearning her maternal language, Innu-aimun, brings to the fore all the pitfalls of moving from one colonial language to another. The challenge for translation is not to lose sight of Kanapé Fontaine’s relationship to French and especially, the way she lends it her voice. In the slam, French is a language of contestation but also of collaboration. Drawing on what she calls a “poetics of relation to the land,” Kanapé Fontaine works toward a respectful cohabitation of the territory. In this context, my strategies of including the French alongside the English and leaving words un-translated aim to disrupt the English version, expose the mediating work of the settler-translator and turn attention to Kanapé Fontaine’s mobilization of French for a writing of decolonization.

Translation plays an important role in the transcultural conceptualization of the characteristics of names (form, function, meaning, naming practices in the world…), especially when it includes names that look unusual from the Eurocentric, Western point of view. This paper analyzes such a situation in relation to the Spanish translations of Native American proper names in the literature by these cultural groups: it explores the diversity of names in the source language and culture and compares it to the target texts in order to observe the choices and decisions made by translators. The analysis also includes a revision of the scholarly ideas about the translation norms concerning Indian names and finally leads to an interpretation of the broader context of the transcultural reception of the indigenous Other in Spain.

In 2011 and 2012, I undertook a two-part survey to answer some large questions about the use of plays in translation in the higher education drama classroom in Anglophone North America and to test my ideas regarding the simultaneous ubiquity and invisibility of translation there. My project here is to report on that survey and to make clear why translation studies is ready to take a prominent role in theatre studies. U.S. colleges and universities constitute one of the largest single markets in the world for drama translated into English. Most U.S. theatre history classes include plays from the world canon, and many specialized classes in theatre departments focus on plays from non-Anglophone cultures. In English departments, where other genres in translation (e.g., the novel) may be approached with caution, drama seems to be offered a “pass” because the notion of being dramaturgically literate depends on some knowledge of a sizable canon of non-Anglophone plays. Yet despite its ubiquity, translation is often so normalized as to be invisible to those who depend on it. As Laurence Senelick notes, “For most students, a work exists wholly in its translated form, spontaneously generated.” Translation, as the survey confirmed, is part of the DNA of theatre studies. As such, I argue, it needs to be brought to the foreground of the field. In saying this, I am not unaware of the rich work undertaken by scholars, editors, and practitioners who are enmeshed in the difficult issues involved with translating plays, which include pressing for greater attention to cultural sensitivity and literacy. My focus here is on the academy and the classroom, where, for better or worse, the vast majority of future dramaturgs and audience members will cut their teeth on a critical mass of plays and where no single language or production entity or publisher can claim pride of place.

Consolidating the Universe. Translation Criticism among Contexts of Translational Reception of H.P. Lovecraft’s Poetry in Poland The article discusses the influence of translator’s criticism and other extra-textual factors on the translations of poetry by Howard Phillips Lovecraft. Since the very first renditions of his Fungi from Yuggoth sonnets by Jerzy Płudowski and Leszek Lachowiecki included in two anthologies of horror poetry, Polish versions of Lovecraft’s verses have always been modified in the process of interlinguistic transfer according to either sole preferences of the publishing houses and evaluations proposed by critics of the English originals or the translators’ reception of the previous Polish variants. In most cases these modifications resulted from more or less stereotypical visions of the American writer held by the translators and were aimed at establishing links to his other works already published in Poland (short stories, essays, letters). Thus effects of the semantic shifts, detectable also in the latest variants by Krzysztof Azarewicz and Mateusz Kopacz, can be referred to as consolidating the universe of the writer’s biographical legend and literary works which is more coherent in the Polish target texts than in the originals.

Political discourse has been the subject of increasing interest in recent decades with the development of ideological and rhetorical criticism focusing on US presidential speeches, especially after the events of 9/11. Indeed, extensive research literature already exists in the field of American presidential rhetoric. The same cannot be said for studies of political texts available in translation. Currently, translation studies seems to be more concerned with the politics and the politicization of translation than with the translation of political texts, which have been examined more from a synchronic perspective than a diachronic one. Using a diachronic parallel corpora of Italian translations (published in books and newspapers) of a specific genre of US presidential speech, the inaugural address, this study highlights recurring translation strategies as well as problems, related to culture-bound and value-laden political terms, style, and phraseology. This research also seeks to contribute to the definition of political language as a language for specific purposes.

The subject of Alarcón’s English language novels is identified without difficulty in publicity materials as deeply Peruvian and yet the marketing also presents him as a ‘World’ writer. I explore how naming where Alarcón’s writing is ‘from’ and where it is going relates to the place of Latin American culture globally. Working with the idea that literature should have a ‘place’, I examine the politics of (self)translation in Alarcón with reference to the period of armed internal conflict in Peru (1980-2000) to argue that an understanding of (self)translation as a process can contribute to our idea of what World Literature is and what national literatures are from a specifically Latin American perspective. In an interplay between foreign and domestic that differs from the more familiar strategies of codeswitching in Latinx writing, Alarcón both enables and resists the translation of other parts of the world onto Peru/Latin America.

Rendering songs into another language poses numerous difficulties for translators. Songs may be considered as poems set to music, and in translating them, these professionals confront not only routine translation problems such as expressing the meaning, ambience and style of the original work, but they also have to attend to other requisites such as creating a new version of the song within the restrictions of rhythm and rhyme. In this article, I examine songs from Spanish literature and from Spanish and South American popular music, and explore translators’ ways of converting the original texts into English. We shall see that sometimes they have captured meaning by translating virtually word for word, while on other occasions translated songs manage to encapsulate only the general sense and atmosphere of the original Spanish song. In some cases, sounds from the original have acted as a catalyst for the topic of a new song, while in others the song’s main topic has been discarded altogether. As a result of these perhaps inevitable adjustments and shifts in topic and atmosphere there will nearly always be some kind of ‘loss’ in the translation of songs, but on rare occasions their rendition into English almost seems to ‘improve’ on the Spanish version. I will outline Low’s (Low, 2005) “Pentathlon Principle” which offers five criteria for assessing song translation, and examine specific translations from this persective. Song examined are María Josefa’s song “Ovejita, niño mío” from Federico García Lorca’s “La Casa de Barnada Alba”, Luis Aguilé’s “Cuando salí de Cuba”, Agustín Lara’s “Granada”, and Osvaldo Farrés’s “Quizás, quizás, quizás.”

Picture books have a large potential to expand cross-cultural interactions because their visual codes seem to be intelligible and accessible from one culture to another. However, the interpretation of pictures is affected by interaction with the verbal text, which, during transmission, may undergo significant changes under the influences of linguistic structures and cultural politics. Taking Toshi Maruki’s Hiroshima No Pika ( 1980 ) as its example, the article examines cultural transmission in translations of a picture book about war, a topic which normally entails a political issue and emotional affect. Comparison of the original text with a British translation (1983) and an American translation (1982) suggests that political perspectives in England and the USA in the early 1980s not only shape how the Japanese text is translated, but also prompt the translators to omit or add material. Making adjustments in order to mediate a text for an audience with a different set of cultural assumptions can dismantle the innermost significance of the original work and reduce narrative depth. The article concludes that, for effective cross-cultural communication, both a deep and culturally accurate interpretation of the original work and adequate consideration of the effects of any cultural or linguistic adjustment is essential.

I moved to Hong Kong about fourteen months ago to teach in a liberal arts university located in the new territories, on the border between Hong Kong and mainland China, about half an hour away by bus. Before coming to Hong Kong, I had taught for a few years in several American institutions, ranging from a community college to a research university. The courses I taught were mostly in Asian American literature, postcolonial literature, and Chinese literature in translation. Immersed as a graduate student and a teacher in American multiculturalism, postcolonialism, and ethnic studies, I have found a great deal of difference between the situation in Hong Kong and the social contexts of the United States and former colonial nations in South Asia, in which most ethnic, multicultural, and postcolonial theories are situated.

This article examines three translations of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn to reveal how concepts like rebellion are delivered in them. While Huck has been depicted as a controversial rebel running away from the ‘sivilized’ world in America, textual and paratextual evidence in the translations shows his rebellion has been redirected in China to different socio-historical contexts and readerships. This article finds three factors that may have contributed to the metamorphosis of rebellion in China: adults’ projection of children's roles, mainstream attitudes towards rebellion, and core Chinese social values, such as filial piety, respect for seniority, and collectivism.

Resumen
This research examines the contribution of language variation in translating technical texts from English into Arabic language. It aims at analyzing language variation, technical texts translation competence, creating subject field knowledge and generating authenticity in technical texts and translation setting. This study attempts to uncover problems that English language and literature students at the University of Jordan / Aqaba branch problems of translating technical texts. This qualitative research included 30 B.A students selected randomly from the Dept. of English Language and Literature at the University of Jordan. The results of the study revealed that literature students encountered many problems when translating technical texts, particularly when using two different varieties of English American / British into Arabic language. This research recommends that translators and professional in the field should be concerned with translating technical texts and include them in translation syllabi.

The Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) population in the United States is growing rapidly and is geographically dispersed and culturally diverse. Yet, national estimates produced for this population are often limited to a subset, typically those who are English proficient. Meaningful representation of AANHPI communities in survey research requires strategies that account for their diverse linguistic and cultural characteristics. However, translation alone will not suffice to increase representation. More culturally responsive approaches are needed as well. In a joint project, AARP and NORC at the University of Chicago reviewed the literature and conducted semistructured interviews with experts in AANHPI representation in research to examine barriers to AANHPI survey participation and strategies for overcoming these barriers. This article presents findings and recommendations from this research. We discuss three key challenges to AANHPI representation in surveys: Lack of familiarity with surveys and their importance, lack of trust in those conducting surveys, and issues of language and translation. We then present strategies for increasing AANHPI survey participation: Involving trusted leaders of the AANHPI community, at the local or national level as appropriate for the study; focusing on messaging about the survey that is culturally appropriate and tailored to the population; and providing culturally appropriate translations.

Resumen
The review outlines the major topics of the conference on American Studies held by RSUH in May 2021. Colonial and postcolonial discourses, their intervention and interpretation are still simultaneously extraordinarily enabling and theoretically problematic. The question is how literary and historical texts as well as cultural and political representations could be analyzed from colonial and postcolonial point of view. The conference topics integrated colonial and postcolonial discourses into a wide range of humanitarian fields in order to understand their common elements, which make a contribution to an identifiable American national outlook. Themes of interest included colonialism as a discourse of domination; hybrid modalities of identity and their difference; ethnographic translations of radical alterity; postcolonialism and feminism as critical discourses; the relationship between race, language, and culture; global history and postcolonialism; postcolonial discourse in the US foreign policy.
