Resumen
Rice without Rain (1986), written by the Chinese American writer, Minfong Ho (b. 1951), has been recognised internationally and awarded with numerous awards including Best Books for Young Adults (1991). Set in Thailand, the text is believed to have been overlooked in regards to works by Ho as scholarships on the issue of the Asian female identity through the lens of transculturalism are scarce. Previous scholarship on Rice without Rain, for example, focused more on the general identity of the female characters through the concepts of a “whole” self and female “space” for Thai and American-born Thai young women (Thongthiraj, 2006). We hypothesise here, however, that the true identity of the Asian female is reflected through the depiction of Jinda in Rice without Rain which is believed to contain the concepts of transculture/ality and identity fluidity. Here, we explore the concept of transculture/ality by the transcultural scholar, Arianna Dagnino (2015), as a platform to contest the current understanding of the Asian female identity by the scholar of English and Comparative Literature, Lalaine Yanilla Aquino (2011) who states that the Asian female identity is recognized culturally as powerless, voiceless and submissive. We examine how transculturalism forms the identity of the protagonist using the concept of transculture/ality by Dagnino and identity fluidity by the cultural theorist Stuart Hall (2011). Findings of this paper demonstrate the application of transculture/ality and identity fluidity in a work of literature revealing that Jinda contests the stereotypical understanding of the Asian Female identity reflecting transculture/ality and identity fluidity.

Resumen
The postcolonial diasporic writers’ favourite trend is diaspora, dislocation, and memory. Women Indian writers living in host countries are far more advanced in this discipline than male writers. Their narratives are reminiscent of the past they left behind, as well as a reflection of the challenges they face in articulating new identities in the host country. Memories of Rain (1992) by Sunetra Gupta is a complicated and difficult postcolonial novel about numerous facets of migration and diaspora, including displacement, acculturation, transculture, and transnationality. Gupta illustrates interculturality and cultural hybridity through the protagonist's marriage to a foreigner. The goal of this research is to investigate the transcultural and transnational aspects of Gupta’s Memories of Rain by applying postcolonial cultural theory of Homi K. Bhabha and Avtar Brah.

Resumen
Theories of hybrid culture and transculturalism are analyzed from the point of view of comparative literature. In the modern world the transformation of multiculturalism and globalism towards transculture is an inevitable consequence of the complicated processes of cultural interaction in all countries of the world. Transculturalism is an alternative to multiculturalism as a product of globalism and has different rhetoric of the Other. The transcultural concept, put forward by F. Ortiz as an alternative to the asymmetric concept of acculturation in the area of cultural contacts, provided opportunities for describing the complex processes of cultural interaction in the era of globalization. Transculture is based on the cultural polyphony, in which there should not be a complete synthesis, where the cultures retain some opacity. The concept of transculturality can be used as a basis for a modern comparative analysis of literature. At the same time, key issues of interaction of cultures in post-Soviet discourse are not solved. Therefore, the study of methodologies of post-Soviet studies is important not only as theoretical problem, but also as a problem of general cultural significance. Therefore, the Caribbean philosophy, which is being built as a significant element of contemporary comparativism in the field of interaction between cultures, directly concerns the problems of choosing ways of further postcolonial development of postSoviet cultures. Transculturalism proposes the principle of hybridity instead of the archaic principle of the purity of national culture, declaring the change in attitude to national languages, cultural traditions and the very concept of nation-state, giving way to the processes of transnationalization and polyglossia associated with the principle of the networked cosmopolitanism. This is a new relationship between languages and cultures. Ultimately, this new andmagological interaction between the Own and the Other. It is a search for a new unity of the various Others.

Kelly, Brigid Maria. "Belly dancing in New Zealand: identity, hybridity, transculture". Thesis, University of Canterbury. School of Culture, Literature and Society, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/2536.

Texto completo
Resumen
This thesis explores ways in which some New Zealanders draw on and negotiate both belly dancing and local cultural norms to construct multiple local and global identities. Drawing upon discourse analysis, post-structuralist and post-colonial theory, it argues that belly dancing outside its cultures of origin has become globalised, with its own synthetic culture arising from complex networks of activities, objects and texts focused around the act of belly dancing. This is demonstrated through analysis of New Zealand newspaper accounts, interviews, focus group discussion, the Oasis Dance Camp belly dance event in Tongariro and the work of fusion belly dance troupe Kiwi Iwi in Christchurch. Bringing New Zealand into the field of belly dance study can offer deeper insights into the processes of globalisation and hybridity, and offers possibilities for examination of the variety of ways in which belly dance is practiced around the world. The thesis fills a gap in the literature about ‘Western’ understandings and uses of the dance, which has thus far heavily emphasised the United States and notions of performing as an ‘exotic Other’. It also shifts away from a sole focus on representation to analyse participants’ experiences of belly dance as dance, rather than only as performative play. The talk of the belly dancers involved in this research demonstrates the complex and contradictory ways in which they articulate ideas about New Zealand identities and cultural conventions. Some of their reflections on belly dancing appear to reflect consciousness of and dis-ease around issues of indigeneity and multiculturalism in wider New Zealand society. Participants in this study also talk about how they explore and perform ideas about femininity, which includes both acceptance and rejection of belly dancing as innately feminine. Looking at New Zealand identities through belly dance, and vice-versa, highlights developing, nuanced and multiple articulations of self and other in a globalised world.

Resumen
Dynamic networking is a key factor for successful transnational organizations. The transcultural shift is a critical process that can enable cultural hybridization so as to inspire consensual identity and learning aptitude amongst worldwide members. The Global Learning Organization (GLO) model is re-conceptualized to bring about this cultural shift. E-learning seems an appropriate tool to generate effective transcultural communication for both culture and learning perspectives under the GLO model. A qualitative case study using document analysis and interviews is conducted to understand how transcultural communication is generated via e-learning under the GLO model in two fields. Findings reveal that firstly, trust is a core element in generating transcultural communication and the combination of face to face and e-learning can enable trust to be activated and developed. Secondly, the way to build trust varies depending on task characteristics: the detail-oriented tasks require more intense face to face communication than the concept-focused tasks. This study illustrates that design of various mixed learning pattern with strategies to build trust through the affective dimension will be key for the successful GLO.

Winterstein, Xavier Joseph. "Painting Samoan hybridity – le Va". Thesis, The University of Sydney, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/18771.

Texto completo
Resumen
I have always struggled to come to terms of my position between worlds. Growing up involved constant friction between my Samoan heritage and Western upbringing; resulting in a bitterness towards an unknown Samoan culture. These feelings were to be confronted directly as I was asked by my parents to undertake the role of Matai – a Samoan chief. This research paper looks at cultural hybridity and how visual dialogue aids in resolving an internal feud of clashing cultures. The Samoan term ‘Va’ is associated with one’s position and connection, and the paintings produced alongside this investigation become steps towards a resolution by forming an understanding of my position as a hybrid. In the case of this research paper, traditional style oil painting on canvas becomes my mode of choice to portray this communication. The series of paintings created through this research project embodies my connection with Samoan spirituality. The connection is conceived as stories of a sacred world being familiarized through re-enactment and re-evaluation against the present world – my reality. As this journey unfolds, the question is raised: how can the process of painting account for and help mediate the various positions of my subjectivity and the pressure of initiation into the Matai system? Critical analysis of works produced by artists Odd Nerdrum, Kehinde Wiley and Greg Semu aid in finding an answer by investigating hybridity from a contemporary perspective. The resulting research evidences a visual mode of hybrid language that has the power to speak the unspoken; the given, the Va.

The blending of cultures has grown exponentially since the late 1980s. This phenomenon, which confirms the transition from modernity to postmodernity, affects the literary field and precipitates the collapse of the modern and national model of literature. It is then necessary to rethink the literary field, its history and its boundaries, and to forsake three notions that characterized it: essentialism, modernocentrism, and the arbitrary exclusion of whole areas of literature. This thesis participates in this effort through the exploration of European literary and cultural transfers in Japan, in archaic times and in the Heisei era (1989-2019). After a first observation of our present context, it revisits the archaic transfers between Europe and Japan, in order to undermine the foundations of modernocentrisme and essentialism, and to rethink the chronology and the evolution of transcultural exchanges between these two cultural eras. A third step consists of the study of Japanese mangaesque literature and its neomedieval imaginary; in particular, two key titles of this trend are analysed: Vinland Saga and Spice & Wolf. This transcultural and transtextual facet of contemporary literary creation illustrates the importance of extending the boundaries and defining criteria of literature. It also reflects the growing place of Japan on the literary chessboard and the role of the European Middle Ages in the re-enchantment of the world, of which postmodernity is the vector

University of Technology, Sydney. Faculty of Education.
This thesis examines the construction processes of language, culture and identities in relation to both the macro level of society and culture, as well as the micro-individual level. It argues that there is a need to understand these constructions beyond discrete notions of language, identities and culture. The thesis mobilises performativity theory to explore how exposure to a variety of practices during the life trajectory has an impact on the construction and performance of language, identities and culture. It shows how a theory of performativity can provide a comprehensive account of the complex process of, and the relationships between, hybridisation (engagement in a range of cultural practices) and monolithication (nostalgic attachments to familiar practices). The thesis also suggests that the deployment of performativity theory with a focus on individual biography as well as larger social-cultural factors may fill a gap left in some other modes of analysis such as Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) and Conversation Analysis (CA). Analysing data from four workplaces in Australia, the study focuses on trans-institutional talk, namely casual conversation in which people from a variety of linguistic and cultural backgrounds work together. Following the suggestion (Pennycook 2003; Luke 2002) that there is a need to shift away from the understanding that a particular language is attached to a particular nation, territory and ethnicity, the thesis shows how discrete ethnic and linguistic labels such as ‘Japanese’ and ‘English’ as well as notions of ‘code-switching’ and ‘bi-lingualism’ become problematic in the attempt to grasp the complexity of contemporary transcultural workplaces. The thesis also explores the potential agency of subjects at the convergence of various discourses through iterative linguistic and cultural performances. In summary, the thesis provides deeper insight into transcultural performances to show the links between idiosyncratic individual performances and the construction of transcultural linguistic, cultural phenomena within globalisation.

This dissertation examines the specific discourse produced by diasporic African Caribbean women writers in Canada and the USA, namely Edwidge Danticat, Nalo Hopkinson, Jamaica Kincaid, Paule Marshall, M. NourbeSe Philip, and Olive Senior. These authors’ ambivalent positions as both cultural insiders and outsiders are conveyed through their prose and poetry, in which they reclaim their histories, bodies and tongues. The thesis highlights discourse operations in demonstrating that the selected authors articulate new forms of subjectivity, hence proving that cultural identities do not depend on static territories but rather on mobile and even volatile cultural spaces. Besides reconstructing the past through a discourse that truly unsettles hegemonic versions of history, African Caribbean diasporic women writers represent their bodies beyond materiality and choose to embrace their cultural schizophrenia. Their projects consist in un-silencing the unruly selves through the creation of embodied polyphonies, multiple counter-voices and anti-conformist utterances. The discursive constructions of the self therefore occur outside of canonical terminology, as these women writers resist single-voiced discourse and favour heteroglossic rhetorics. Ultimately, this comparative literary analysis is innovative as it proves that diasporic memories, tongues and identities are interlinked, and that beyond their respective agendas and personal discursive strategies, these authors are limbo writers who, like limbo dancers, transform instability into a recreative and artistic experience. They inscribe their self-representations into a powerful dialectic of movement, fluidity, plurality and hybridity, and truly demonstrate that the feminine Caribbean diaspora can speak

Resumen
Abstract : The following dissertation provides a comparative analysis of four Québécois and Canadian literary authors—Fulvio Caccia, Ying Chen, Wayson Choy, and Lawrence Hill—and the manner in which they have responded through varied use of genre to present-day racial and ethnic discourse, as it occurs within both wider society and the Canadian and Québécois literary institutions more specifically. The dissertation begins with an introductory chapter that takes up the central concepts that inform the study, namely, those of ethnic literature, écriture migrante, race, ethnicity, hybridity, transculture, and comparative literature. The main body of the dissertation is divided into two parts, the first dealing with the francophone authors Caccia and Chen, the second with the anglophone authors Choy and Hill. In the first part, the writers are shown to employ defamiliarizing and ‘unreadable’ literary strategies drawn from the nouveau roman (or French new novel) and fantastic literary genres in an effort to resist common understandings of race and ethnicity, with the creation of a universal, deracialized literary space resulting to differing degrees in each case. In the second part, the study focuses on the use that Choy and Hill have made of more traditional and readable literary forms—realist and autobiographical in nature—in the attempt not so much to reject outright the discourse of race and ethnicity but to resignify the meaning of these latter terms in ways that allow for the production of a more open sense of identity. In this regard, by informing and historicizing certain cultural realities (here, Chinese Canadian and African Canadian respectively), Choy and Hill seek to challenge the reductive views that have in the past affected these often marginalized segments of Canadian society. Ultimately, the dissertation attempts to explore how the four authors in question participate in a shared project of sorts through their contestation of dominant racial and ethnic discourse, despite the different stylistic approaches they may take. A secondary aspect of the project addresses, through recourse to reader-response theory, some of the difficulties that may arise when a mainstream readership approaches works of ethnic literature.

The subject doesn't exist apart from its relation to culture and society nor frome the language that constructs it. The transcultural passage can deprive the subject of his place within the mother-tongue, and he finds himself inevitably foreign, in search of a modality of existence. The passage touches the very foundations of the identifications and can confront the subject to a rocking between the anguish of disappearance and the liberty due to an illusion of the freedoom from castration. However, an abruption in the relation of the subject to the Other does not eliminate the questions about his sexual being : on the contrary, the out-of-norm of their position is susceptible to reactivate them. Everyone knows the famous aphorism of Simone de Beauvoir : « One is not born, bay rather becomes, a woman ». This observation echoes the position of Sigmund Freud who questions himself until the end of his life on what the woman wants. The first to question the innate norms of sex, he demonstrates, with the aid of the Oedipus complex, the paths that the subject takes as a social being to become a man or a woman. In this thesis, we examine the paths that find some women taken in the issue of women's becoming in the context of a transcultural passage. All of them are the first-generation Russian-speaking migrants

The aging of the Tunisian population during the so called TrenteGlorieuses in France is not spared by Alzheimer phenomenon at a time when the disease has an intense stigma and popularization as much in western societies as in developing countries . With reference to the work of M. Peruchon, G. Le Gouès or A.-M. Gardey highlight of the dementia involution in addition to the achievement of benchmarks and identity limits are all addressed in a transcultural approach. The analysis of psychic functioning of ten Tunisians living in France compared with ten Tunisians living in Tunisia, all over the age of sixty years and suffering from the dementia so called Alzheimer's is suggested with protocols coming from the Thematic Apperception Test. While the representational ‘scooping out’ does not differ from one population to another, the study has highlighted a modification of a self-representation more pronounced in the group of immigrant subjects. The migration phase seems also to strengthen the research of archaic object relationship where the impulses of attachment and grasping have an important role. In between travel and colonization, the joint-culture is presented here in a job that speaks in favour of a relativism of universal data carried out by the biomedical world. Understand cultural representations so mentioned aims to provide us with elements for an appropriate care of our seniors overwhelmed by the effects of belonging to a socio-cultural minority whose identity is often defined by the loss and neurodegenerative deficit

My thesis examines the concept of the transcultural in the contemporary African novel, specifically in Le Cavalier et son ombre (1997) by Boubacar Boris Diop, Cinéma (1997) by Tiermo Monénembo, Le lys et le flamboyant (1997) by Henri Lopes and Rue Félix-Faure (2005) by Ken Bugul. I define the transcultural as the diverse novelistic operations of appropriation or re-appropriation, interpretation or reinterpretation, as well as the borrowing of cultural signs from many different places. The transcultural thus elucidates the way in which the contemporary African novel positions itself within a conceptual space of buzzing cultural activity. Yet critics often insist on the difference and identity of African fiction and consign it to a unique status that can only amount to exclusion and discrimination. I use critical concepts such as Marc Angenot’s acceptability, Jean-Marc Ela’s bricolage and indocility, Giorgio Agamben’s exception, and Greimas and Meschonnic’s sign to emphasize the transgressive value of the transcultural option adopted by the novels studied. Thus, the novel appears as the locus of multiple crossings: the crossing of micro-narratives that proclaim the end of master narratives; the crossing of genres and of art forms (orality, music, cinema, sculpture, photography); the crossing of discourses. The transcultural seizes the novel and perverts it, turning it into a disparate mixture, because the novel itself is by nature unstable and irresolute. I conclude that the contemporary African novel, while having its frames of reference, nevertheless escapes all attempts at fixing its identity and definition because it is a framework in which generic, cultural, geographic and spatial frontiers break down and cease to present any clear configuration. The contemporary African novel increasingly constitutes itself in the fluctuating interstices of space and of literary and artistic genres, all of which writers continue to appropriate and re-appropriate.

Resumen
In social science research, the demographic categories of ethnicity are linked to what the census bureau considers as a person’s ethnic heritage. However, these categories are based on the societal assumption that members of a given category share the same characteristics and life experiences, even though the heterogeneity between members within a category may be as diverse as between categories. The paper examines the 15 interview subjects of a research study drawn from 10 minority migrant groups, where seven of them indicated significant transcultural experiences before migrating to Australia. It argues that their lived experiences and subjectivity vary from others who migrated directly from their native countries. The formers’ diaspora consciousness and transcultural mixtures may introduce an artifact to a research study’s design, affecting the validity of the data collected. The paper examines other situations where this anomaly can occur and proposes precautions to minimize its negative effects.

Resumen
Abstract Globalization of engineering design teams occurs both in industry and also in the engineering classroom. Strategic needs for operating multi-site operations and inter-organizational alliances call for more effective boundary-spanning partnerships: inter-divisional, inter-organizational, and often, multi-country partnerships. This paper reports a multi-discipline research study — involving engineering, anthropology and telecommunications elements — on global engineering design teams. US engineering students from mechanical, chemical, and electrical engineering worked together with counterparts from China and the Netherlands. The students learned advanced telecommunication media and transcultural communication skills needed to carry out the tri-continental design project. They used an active learning process called transcultural incident reporting that focuses on cultural and power issues that must be managed in order to accomplish high quality design. The engineers’ reports show a gain in understanding of the cultural and power issues that affect boundary-spanning project performance.
