Texto completoMy Ph.D. dissertation, proposes an anthropological analysis of religious sites related to representations of hell and the afterlife in contemporary Japan. I carried out three six-month periods of multi-sited fieldwork, distributed in five main localities characterized by religious symbolism and practices that connoted them as “actual hells”: Osorezan in Mutsu-shi, Rokuhara in Kyoto, Ashikuraji (Tateyama-chō), Hakone and Hirano-ku in Osaka, in order to produce an analysis in a comparative perspective. I propose a study, mainly based on a heuristic approach and on theories of cultural complexity, of the symbolic religious discourses and practices related to death and the afterlife, as well as of how their meaning was constructed and (re-)produced, both at a local and translocal level. Subsequently, I contextualize those narratives in a historical perspective and connected them to contemporary socio-economic conditions of the areas, with a main focus on processes of construction of identity and of meaning making of religious symbolism and place.

Texto completoThe bosom serpent story-complex refers to widespread cross-cultural narratives and beliefs attributing physical discomfort to alleged animals entering and living in the body of the sufferer. Scholarly enquiries have concentrated on modern and contemporary bosom serpent folklore: pre-modern evidence has been largely neglected. Focusing, in this dissertation, on a vast range of pre-modern sources – examples can be found from much of Eurasia –, and adopting a folklore, a historical, a medical and an ethnological comparative perspective, my aim will be to throw more light on the theme from a diachronic point of view. I will, in fact, follow evidence for bosom serpents back through time and examine the ramifications and various adaptations of traditional aetiologies involving them. Taken together these disciplines (folklore, history, medicine and ethnology) offer a credible approach, encourage collaborative research and allow a multi-source method. I will show that a great deal of cross-cultural similarities, hitherto considered unrelated or unexplained, belong to the same story-complex. They are adaptations of the polymorphic and predominant idea of the impossible intrusion of animals into a human body. Pre-modern bosom serpents, firmly grounded in everyday medical and religious notions, were formerly accepted as concrete and tangible facts to be understood in terms of medicine, demonology, and sorcery. They had a powerful or latent emotional charge and have perhaps always figured in story-telling traditions and personal experience narratives. In this context, particular attention will be devoted to experiential themes and the chronic delusions of men and women who believed themselves to have been involuntarily penetrated by fantastic animals. Like bosom serpents cast as causative agents of disease, these suffers from internal zoopathy can be traced back in time at the beginnings of psychopathology

Texto completoSaturo (Leporano, Italy) is a site about 12 km south-east of Taranto, situated on a promontory overlooking Porto Perone and Porto Saturo, two small inlets on the Gulf of Taranto, on the Ionic sea. Excavations carried out in the XXth century have shown an impressive continuity of occupation, with archaeological remains of Bronze Age and Iron Age settlements, of two Greek sanctuaries and of a very large Roman Villa. From 2007 Sapienza – University of Rome has restarted fieldwork in the Greek sanctuary so called “Santuario della Sorgente” (2007-2010). Many terrecotta figurines of children were found in the earth fills of the eleven favissae at the site. This PhD research presents a complete study of the votive terracottas depicting infants, children and adolescents in Saturo and in other contexts of Magna Graecia, Sicily and Greece, during the Classical and Hellenistic periods. Moreover it attemps to draw meaningful deductions about this kind of offerings and the rites (especially of passage) connected to Aphrodite, goddess associated with fertility of the natural world and of men, the main deity worshiped in the sanctuary.

Texto completoIn an attempt to assign an identity to the statue of a female deity armed the crowning acroterion of the Roman sanctuary of Fortuna and Mater Matuta in the building phase relevant to the activity of Tarquinius Superbus, the author identifies the compositional scheme of the entire group acroterial as presentation of the Corinthian myth of Ino and Melicertes, which is accompanied by the self-representation of the last ruler of Rome and the female deity of his personal power and protect the entire dynasty of Tarquini, family of Corinthian origin. It is therefore revisited the sources archaeological and literary about the nature of some Greek goddesses of Hesiod and the Homeric tradition in which we can recognize archaic features due to contamination with the Phoenician goddess Astarte, and this interaction is particularly profound for the figures of Astarte and Aphrodite in Corinth that only in the classical age of war and lose the attributes courotrophici to be allocated to different skills, but that in the proof of the Archaic period is a deity who plays a military role to protect the city and the dynasties that they oversee. Aspects eastern recognized to the cult of Aphrodite Fortuna-Roman might, therefore, result from a mediation due to the Greek religious culture rather than a direct contribution of Phoenician merchants in the area of the Forum Boarium. Around the grounds cult residing in the Roman heritage mitopoietico about the last sovereign of Rome and the gods who invest them with royal power, it is assumed that they stem from a double tradition built at the beginning of the fifth century BC when the Senate of Rome and Aristodemus of Cumae are opponents in a public process for the allocation of the legacy of Tarquinius Superbus, the parties would, therefore, used genealogical reconstructions opposed to each other because they refer to different mythical characters that legitimize their requests for allocation of this legacy.
