Resumen
The formation of the competition system in professional golf began in the second half of the 19th century. First, tournaments were founded, which later began to be combined into tours. At the same time, the so-called majors remain the pinnacle of both the men's and women's golf calendar. Among men, in particular, there is the so-called Championship of the Professional Golf Association (PGA Championship), which is held exclusively for professional golfers. Accordingly, it has its own characteristic features, which were formed over a long historical period. The purpose of the study was to characterize the historical features of the formation of the Championship of the Professional Golf Association and its current state. Materials and methods: analysis and synthesis, historical method, systematic approach, theoretical interpretation and explanation. Results and conclusion. A key date in the history of the Championship of the Professional Golf Association is 1916, when the tournament was founded by the Professional Golf Association of America and it entered into the Championship of the Professional Golf Association Tour. The tournament is held annually and during the entire history only in 1917, 1918 and 1943, it did not take place due to the World Wars. During 1916-1958, the Championship of the Professional Golf Association was held in the format of match play (play in pairs for the elimination of one of the participants). Since 1958 until today, professional golfers play for the championship in the so-called “stroke play” format (a game for counting the number of strokes on each hole, the participant with the least number of strokes wins). The format of the playoff round, which is held on the condition that the participants in the final are equal in points, also changed during the development of the tournament. Thus, at first, the playoff took place on additional holes until one of the participants won, and today its format involves playing on three mandatory holes. In 1998, the Championship of the Professional Golf Association became a part of the Championship of the Professional Golf Association European Tour, another of golf's most prestigious tours. Today, the prize pool of the tournament is $15 million, which is the second largest award in the majors. At the same time, there have been no significant changes in the format of the Championship of the Professional Golf Association and its calendar in the last twenty years. For a long time, the tournament starts in May and is the second major among the Championship of the Professional Golf Association Tour calendar. At the same time, in 2020 and 2021, the tour experienced a decrease in total revenues as a result of measures caused by the COVID pandemic

Resumen
The development of the sport of chess in Mykolaiv begins with the legendary game between the Swedish king Karl XII and the Ukrainian hetman Ivan Mazepa on the banks of the Southern Bug on a rest stop on their route after the defeat in the Battle of Poltava in 1709 (modern yacht club). Mykolaiv was formed as a center of shipbuilding, where the Main Headquarters of the Black Sea Fleet and the ports of the Russian Empire were located, and its residents became shipbuilding engineers, naval officers, scientists, industrialists, diplomats, who were the first to introduce the game of chess among the townspeople. The very first public chess battles took place in the summer Maritime Meeting, and later in the constructed buildings of the "House of Flagships and Captains" (since 1824), Mykolaiv Maritime Astronomical Observatory (since 1829), yacht club (since 1887). On June 28, 1887, the "Chess Society" was founded in Mykolaiv, which did not last long, but was revived in December 1901. The members of the Society held chess games among themselves, for the fi rst time held a city-wide chess tournament in 1902, took part in European chess tournaments and won. The society held competitions of chess problems, collected literature and materials, published endgames of famous chess players and its own materials in local, metropolitan and European chess periodicals. Historical and political vicissitudes of the beginning of the 20th century with wars and revolutions that led to economic ruin, the death of people, the emigration of a significant part of the intelligentsia, did not contribute to the development and spread of chess sports in Mykolaiv during this historical period.

Resumen
Summary The first direct contact with rugby was made by young men from Serbia during the First World War, after retreating through Albania, watching matches of French and English soldiers. During 1916, some 3,500 Serbian boys were sent to France and the United Kingdom to study. During their education at lyceums, colleges and universities, they were given the opportunity to play various sports, including rugby union. In keeping with their interest and quality, the Serbian boys quickly became involved in the school teams. Most Serbian boys actively participated in playing rugby in three Scottish cities - Edinburgh, Glasgow and Dundee. Their interest in the sport was so much that in Edinburgh and Glasgow they formed special teams made up only of Serbs who played matches with other school teams. The highlight of dealing with Serb rugby in Scotland was the performance by the boys of the George Heriot School at the Rugby 7 tournament on March 9, 1918 in Edinburgh and a victory over the British Colonies selection. This performance can be considered the first appearance of a sports team under the name of Serbia on the international stage. After the end of World War I and the return to the homeland, some of the young men who became acquainted with rugby in France and the United Kingdom actively participated in academic and sports life in their homeland and the result was the establishment of two rugby clubs, in Sabac and Belgrade.

Abstract:This article addresses the question as to how Jane Guyer's seminal explorations of special traits of West African economies in Marginal Gains (2004) can help us understand variations within the region. This question acquires some urgency—for instance in the Cameroonian context, but elsewhere also—since the dimensions she emphasizes (reciprocity, gain, rank) play a crucial role in quite vicious ethnic stereotypes that increasingly dominate people's perceptions of economic developments. The challenge may be, therefore, to determine how an analysis in terms of disjunctures as an asset for marginal gains can steer clear of the ethnic stereotypes through which people themselves perceive discontinuities in everyday life. Starting from the historical example of the wild-rubber boom in southern Cameroon under German rule (1890–1913) and its chaotic effects at the local level, the article considers how Arjun Appadurai's notion of “tournaments of value” might help us understand such variations.

The presented article deals with the participation of Czechoslovak sportsmen in Inter-Allied Games. This great sports action, which was mainly organized by the YMCA, took place in Paris in 1919 to celebrate the victorious states of WWI. From the newly founded Czechoslovakia the wrestlers, tennis players, football players, fencers and rowers took part. The Czechoslovak sportsmen achieved a lot of great results, for example the first place in football tournament. Except from comparison of results of Czechoslovak and foreign sportsmen the Inter-Allied Games had a great impact for the development of physical education and sport in interwar Czechoslovakia. The Czechoslovakian participants started to cooperate with the American team coach – the Czech-American Josef Amos Pipal, who contributed to sports development in Czechoslovakia in early 1920s.

Resumen
This study examined and discussed the historical significance of the developmental aspects of the Kodokan Judo in the process of inflow of Kodokan Judo by forced suppression after the establishment of YMCA Judo in 1906 in Korea with an objective perspective and drew conclusions. The establishment of Judo Korea was officially established on November 22, 1917 by the forced suppression of the Chosun Judo Department in the YMCA Hwangseong Christian Youth Association in 1906. This group was a group by political means of the Chosun Governor-General and the Japanese imperialists.,On the other hand, the Judo part of the Joseon Dynasty formed a momentum for the commercial spirit in the Judo part of the YMCA Hwangseong Christian Youth Association for the sake of national revival. In other words, with the claim of Lee Sang-jae, a teacher of Vietnam, who is training 100 people in the terrible times of the Japanese colonial rule, the national leaders did not spare all physical support to inspire the business spirit through Judo first, and the indifference of the drama in the emerging military schools became the starting point for the independence movement. In addition, the first Judo tournament was held on October 19, 1929, with five organizations participating, but the last tournament was abolished by Japan on October 12, 1935, as the 7th meeting. However, Lee Sun-gil won the championship and runner-up in 1930s and 1940s, and Seok Jin-kyung not only won the solo exhibition of the Judo Championship in July 1933, but also the Chosun Judo re-defeated Japan and gave a national spirit of business as a country. Thus, it will be possible to present the historical value that achieved the grandeur through the national thought of Judo in Korea during the Japanese colonial period and the academic plan of Judo history education.

Resumen
The article describes a methodological approach to monitoring and analyzing attacks of a highly qualified football team. The aim of the research is to develop a methodology for monitoring and analyzing attacks of highly qualified football teams, taking into account various models of the game tactics. Material and methodology. The competitive activity of the national football teams at the 2018 World Cup was studied. Research methodology: analysis and generalization of the literature sources, lesson observation, video analysis of competitive activities, methods of mathematical statistics. Results. A protocol for registration attacks of the football team has been developed. The estimated scale of penetrating attacks and playing off of standard positions of the football team is identified. A different correlation of positional and fast attacks of national football teams, which used different tactical models of the game, has been established. In one half: for the tactical model "A", positional attacks were 32.3±4.35 (61.8%), fast attacks – 20.0±1.78 (38.2%); for the tactical model "B" – positional attacks – 25.2±4.32 (52.7%), fast attacks – 22.6±4.32 (47.3%); for the tactical model "C" – positional attacks – 32.5±3.49 (67.7%), fast attacks – 15.5±3.96 (32.3%); for the tactical model "D" – positional attacks – 19.2±2.87 (41.9%), fast attacks – 26.6±2.87 (58.1%). At the 2018 world Cup, out of 169 goals, 111 (65.4%) were scored as a result of completing positional attacks, 35 (20.7%) – after playing off of the standard positions, and 23 (13.9%) – after implementing penalty kicks. Conclusions. Monitoring and analyzing the attacks of a football team allows managing persistently the competitive activities of football players both at the operational level during a single game and at the current level during a competitive tournament.

Resumen
The purpose of this study was to determine if gender inequalities existed during SportsCenter's™ highlight coverage of the 2007 Wimbledon Tennis Tournament. The morning episode of the Entertainment Sports Programming Network (ESPN) television show SportsCenter™ was videotaped daily during the Wimbledon Tennis Tournament. Variables analyzed included total highlight time and average time per highlight, total number of highlights, highlights in the introduction to SportsCenter™, highlights previewed preceding commercial, when each highlight occurred, and name gender marking. Statistical significances were seen in first name only (t=2.76, p=0.05) and last name only (t=1.81, p=0.04) name gender marking and highlights occurring in second third (t=2.48, p=0.01) of SportsCenter™. Current literature supports current study's results in that male participants received quantitatively greater highlight coverage, more highlights in the second third of SportsCenter™, and were referred to by their last name while female participants were referred to by their first name.

The Historical Research on Taiwan Elementary School Sports Tournaments during the Initial Stage of Japanese Governance(1895-1911) January, 2007 Chin Hsiang-Pin Advisor:Tasi, Jen-Shiung ABSTRACT Developing smoothly, sports tournaments were introduced into Taiwan by the Japanese colonial government a hundred years ago. From colonial and modernistic points of view, this paper intends to investigate the origin and the process of development of Taiwan elementary school sports tournaments during the initial stage of Japanese governance, and to make an inquiry into the activities held by the sports tournaments and how they influence Taiwanese. The findings of the research: During the initial stage of Japanese governance, the first school sports tournament held by the first branch of kukogo school was the “trip on foot” on December, 12th, 1896. As the beginning of Taiwan elementary school sports tournament, the “trip on foot” was merely a rough model. The form of it was not established until 1901. Then, sports tournaments based on gymnastics and various competitions were separated from the “trip on foot.” On November, 23rd, 1897, the first sports tournament named “united sports tournament” was held by the first and the second branch of kukogo school. Since 1905, sports tournaments had become popular among Taiwan elementary schools. As for the goal of sports tournaments, the difference between the Taiwan elementary schools and the Japan elementary schools was that the former put emphasis on hygiene. And one unique purpose of the public elementary schools during this stage was the promotion of entering school. As for the meeting date, the sports tournaments were held on national holidays in order to convey the nationalism of the emperor of Japan. The same concept was also conveyed implicitly through the decoration and the form of the tournaments so as to teach the young colonial citizen loyalty and patriotism. Lastly, the sports tournaments not only played the role of superior checking the gymnastics in school, they also introduced modern sports, enriching the development of physical education indirectly. In short, being regarded as the best display of conveying the concept of sports, Taiwan elementary school sports tournaments had become a routine. And the Japanese colonial government showed the power of doctrines by holding them. From personal points of view, I consider sports tournaments as the first step of educating Taiwanese. Key words: the initial stage of Japanese governance, Taiwan elementary school, sports tournaments.

Camp leads the New Haven Clock Company as the company successfully builds a profitable business in inexpensive pocket watches. Factory expansions are made, the company builds a significant financial surplus, and sizable dividends are paid. Camp writes a series of three fictional sports books for boys from 1908 to 1911 and with assistance from ghostwriters publishes two more series: one, from 1911 to 1914, of six less expensive books under a pseudonym (Camp probably wrote the first book in this series) and another, from 1913 to 1915, of three books under Camp’s name (possibly all by a ghostwriter). A culture is growing around football, with a play on Broadway (The College Widow in 1904), added fight songs, homecoming festivities (beginning about 1910), and a first game at the Tournament of Roses (1902). The Intercollegiate Athletic Association becomes the NCAA and by 1909 has sixty-seven members; it is led until 1930 (except for the years 1913-16) by Palmer Pierce.

Freeth was praised as a lifesaving hero in the Hawaiian press, and though Alexander Hume Ford (who’d founded the Outrigger Canoe Club in 1908) wanted Freeth to lifeguard at Waikīkī, Freeth decided to work as an underwater diver at Pearl Harbor to help build Dry Dock Number One for the U.S. Navy. He worked at Pearl Harbor until August 1911, when he competed at Honolulu Harbor in the first tournament sanctioned by the Amateur Athletic Union in Hawai‘i. Although Freeth won the diving event, the press focused on his friend Duke Kahanamoku, who broke two world records in the swimming events. Freeth suddenly had ideas of becoming Duke’s manager as Duke trained for the 1912 Olympics in Stockholm.

Abstract A recent n-pair computer tournament for the repeated Prisoner’s Dilemma (Marinoff 1992) amplifies and extends Axelrod’s (1980a, 1980b) results, and demonstrates the relative robustness of co-operative maximization of expected utilities. For empirical and analytical purposes, the twenty competing strategies in the tournament are grouped into five “families,” whose respective members share either common program structures, or similar conceptual functions. The five families are: the probabilistic family, the tit-for-tat family, the maximization family, the optimization family, and the hybrid family. Individual strategies or entire families can be selectively “bred” to exhibit (or to exclude) particular traits, or combinations of traits.

This chapter examines Mississippi State’s fourth straight SEC championship and the team’s first appearance in the integrated NCAA tournament. The journalistic debate surrounding the 1963 Bulldogs demonstrated discontent for the unwritten law by Mississippi’s sports scribes, which was unveiled in the pages of the press. From February 26, 1963, when the Bulldogs clinched the SEC championship through March 20, 1963, after the MSU contingent returned to Starkville from the NCAA tournament, editors and reporters in Mississippi debated the legitimacy of the unwritten law. While Jimmy Ward of the Jackson Daily News continued to champion the cause of the Closed Society, the majority of Mississippi’s sports writers supported an NCAA title opportunity for the Bulldogs. The 1962-63 debate brought forth new support for integrated athletics from Mississippi’s sports reporters and demonstrated the beginning of a slow but progressive change in Mississippi’s press that refused to blindly dismiss any notions towards integration and social equality.

This chapter explores how basketball became an organized sport at black schools and its historical importance. As benefactors such as Julius Rosenwald poured support into education for young black men and women, athletic programs began to grow and flourish. By the 1920s, more than fifty African American high schools in Kentucky were engaged in sports competition. In 1932 educators from the Kentucky Negro Educational Association organized the Kentucky High School Athletic League (KHSAL) to standardize rules and equalize competition. Whitney Young of Lincoln Institute and William Kean of Louisville Central High School were instrumental in organizing Kentucky's African American schools into a statewide association. The first state championship sponsored by the KHSAL was the annual boys basketball tournament.

Resumen
This chapter examines Mississippi State’s third consecutive SEC championship and the onslaught of debate from Mississippi’s press surrounding the merits of integrated competition. Like its past championship seasons, the 1961-62 Bulldogs of head coach James “Babe” McCarthy were denied entry into the NCAA tournament, but support for MSU began to grow. Reporters such as Herb Phillips of the Commercial Dispatch, Billy Ray of the Vicksburg Daily News, Dick Lightsey of the Biloxi-based Daily Herald, and sports editor Lee Baker of the Hederman-owned Clarion-Ledger argued for the Bulldogs’ place in the integrated postseason and the elimination of the unwritten law, all the while stressing their own belief in segregation. From the early stages of February 1962 through March 1962, a smattering of commentary and opinions were expressed from newspapers with the majority of reporters in the Magnolia State once again retreating to the comfortable confines of silent support for the Closed Society. However, by evidence of the growing numbers of supporters in the press, journalists in Mississippi were slowly changing and social progress in athletics was soon to appear on the state’s doorstep.

Resumen
Abstract This chapter begins by examining how the Police Athletic League (PAL) led Althea Gibson to paddle tennis. Gibson’s background—Southern and working-poor—made her a decidedly unlikely tennis player, since the game was a pastime associated with the White American elite. In the summer of 1941, Gibson was given a place on the membership roster of the American Tennis Association’s (ATA) Cosmopolitan Tennis Club, which was interracial in membership. She later discovered that the Cosmopolitan and the ATA used tennis as a vehicle for teaching and expressing respectability. Gibson was not a devotee of either standardization or femininity and bristled at attempts to make her such. The chapter then recounts the first tennis tournament that Gibson won: the annual New York State Open at the Cosmopolitan in 1942. She was also a member of the Mysterious Girls A.C. (Athletic Club), Harlem’s famed basketball team, between 1943 and 1945. The Mysterious Girls A.C. gave Gibson a group of Black female friends who, in their passion for and success in sports, gave her a queer community that she did not have at the Cosmopolitan.

Resumen
Abstract.—The Lake Havasu Fisheries Improvement Program was established in 1992 through the development of a partnership with all of the state, federal, and private organizations that hold an interest in improving the fisheries in Lake Havasu. As the 10-year program reached completion, the actual costs were half of the original estimate. Nonfederal sources provided more than 7 million dollars and the volunteer labor force contributed more than 170,000 h of service in the construction and placement of artificial structures. Angler satisfaction improved, even with a quadrupling of the angling pressure to the lake. Nearly 40 national and regional fishing tournaments returned Lake Havasu to their circuit schedule as a result of this program. The five recreational angling facilities provided free 24-h access to the lake for all ages and physical abilities. These facilities receive more than 80,000 angler use days per year. In addition to all of the sport fish activities, the program was able to re-establish populations of two federally listed endangered species of fish to the reservoir, ending a 20-year absence in the area. As a final accomplishment, the partnership signed a new memorandum of understanding that covers future coordinated maintenance and monitoring activities on the reservoir to sustain the benefits and document long-term results.

Resumen
Abstract.—Catfish have provided sustenance for Missouri inhabitants since prehistoric times, and their abundance and large size capabilities contribute to a popular sport fishery. Catfish were first propagated in state fish hatcheries and stocked in public and private waters in 1911. The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) began intensive rearing of channel catfish Ictalurus punctatus in 1938. Since 1942, fingerling channel catfish have been used in MDC’s private impoundment stocking program. In the early 1960s, MDC initiated production of advanced fingerling channel catfish (>20.3 cm) for stocking in small public lakes. Catchable-size channel catfish (>30.5 cm) are provided for kids’fishing clinics and the urban fishing program where angler effort is as high as 30,000 h/ha. Blue catfish I. furcatus and flathead catfish Pylodictis olivaris were first reared for stocking in public impoundments in 1978 and 1983, respectively. Commercial markets currently exist for channel catfish, flathead catfish, and blue catfish harvested from the Mississippi and St. Francis rivers. Catfish have comprised 21% of the commercial fish harvest since commercial fishing reports became a requirement in 1945. Channel catfish aquaculture has been a viable commercial industry in Missouri since the 1950s. The first official state sportfishing regulation established for catfish was a seasonal restriction in 1928 followed by a 30.5-cm minimum length limit for channel catfish in 1933. Separate daily sport fish bag limits are in effect for flathead catfish, blue catfish, and channel catfish. Currently, catfish are the most preferred sport fish group in Missouri. Most (75%) catfish anglers prefer to fish for channel catfish, most are harvest-oriented, and more than 80% prefer to fish with rod and reel. Competitive fishing for catfish began in the early 1980s, with most tournaments held on the Missouri and Mississippi rivers and associated lower tributary streams. Major management achievements include banning commercial catfishing on the Missouri River and developing an effective sampling technique for monitoring channel catfish populations in small public lakes. Current fisheries management efforts are directed by a statewide plan and primarily focused on measuring exploitation, growth, movement, and fecundity of blue catfish and flathead catfish in the Missouri River, upper Mississippi River, and associated tributaries, and growth and exploitation of blue catfish and flathead catfish in two large reservoirs.

Resumen
Jeopardy! is a popular game show that, in various incarnations, has been on television for more than 50 years. The show is a test of general knowledge with the twist that the clues are answers and the contestants respond with questions that fit the answers. For example, the clue, “16th President of the United States,” would be answered correctly with “Who is Abraham Lincoln?” There are three contestants, and the first person to push his or her button is given the first chance to answer the question orally (with the exception of the Final Jeopardy clue, when all three contestants are given 30 seconds to write down their answers). In many ways, the show is ideally suited for computers because computers can store and retrieve vast amounts of information without error. (At a teen Jeopardy tournament, a boy lost the championship because he wrote “Who Is Annie Frank?” instead of “Who is Anne Frank.”A computer would not make such an error.) On the other hand, the clues are not always straightforward, and sometimes obscure. One clue was “Sink it and you’ve scratched.” It is difficult for a computer that is nothing more than an encyclopedia of facts to come up with the correct answer: “What is the cue ball?” Another challenging clue was, “When translated, the full name of this major league baseball team gets you a double redundancy.” (Answer: “What is the Los Angeles Angels?”) In 2005 a team of 15 IBM engineers set out to design a computer that could compete with the best Jeopardy players. They named it Watson, after IBM’s first CEO, Thomas J. Watson, who expanded IBM from 1,300 employees and less than $5 million in revenue in 1914 to 72,500 employees and $900 million in revenue when he died in 1956. The Watson program stored the equivalent of 200 million pages of information and could process the equivalent of a million books per second. Beyond its massive memory and processing speed, Watson can understand natural spoken language and use synthesized speech to communicate. Unlike search engines that provide a list of relevant documents or web sites, Watson was programmed to find specific answers to clues. Watson used hundreds of software programs to identify the keywords and phrases in a clue, match these to keywords and phrases in its massive data base, and then formulate possible responses.
