Resumen
This work is aimed at reconstructing a history of Tibullus’s presence in modern and contemporary Italian culture, especially focusing on three aspects: publishing, textbooks publishing and literary imitation. The analysis of the most important Tibullian editions circulating in Italy allows to identify different periods of development of Tibullus’s presence in fifteenth to twentieth century publishing. As far as teaching is concerned, I have considered not only teaching books, but also school programmes, evidence and moral judgments about Tibullus and his presence among readings made by young people. As to literature, Tibullus’s influence is continuous, not only in poetry, but also in prose, in vernacular and Neolatin production. The analysis of imitations enables to reconstruct a history of Tibullus’s literary tradition. To realize this work, I have examined and described 318 editions, 102 of which are textbooks, and I have analyzed passages that belong to the literary production of 110 Italian authors.

This dissertation investigates the elocution of eleven poems from Albius Tibullus (c. 55-19 BC) work: poems 1.1-6, 1.8-9, 2.3-4 and 2.6. The demilitation of this corpus of analysis is based on the erotic subject and it is also based on the characters to which the poems are addressed: Delia, Marathus and Nemesis; the formal investigation of the elocution sustains the discussion about some aspects from this subject; therefore, we divided the poems analyzed in three cycles; the elocution of those cycles is going to be analyzed separately and compared to each other. In order to develop this research, as theoretical foundation we use research and commentaries on the work of Tibullus, rhetorical texts from Greco-Roman Antiquity, and researches about rhetoric, especially those woks that develop the elocution. The analysis is based mainly on Ad Herennium and also on Manual de RetÃrica LiterÃria, from Lausberg. A further discussion of Latin poetry requires an examination of the elocution, since the Latin poets had rhetoric as their foundation. It is noticeable, that Tibullus selection and arrangement of the words in his verses utilizes figures of speech in order to mimic their content; moreover the disposition rise up the erotic content of the poems.

Beginning with the vocabulary of memory that characterizes elegiac text production, and with the allegories that translate it metaphorically, this study then uncovers the self-reflexive value of the " I "'s and of the mistress's images, around which the elegy is structured. Similarly, the subjective time that organizes the text appears to be a frame within which reflexivity occurs. In-depth theoretical reading - from the perspective of Aristotle's Poetics, Horace's Art of Poetry and On the Sublime - affords us a better understanding of the art of the elegiac poets, and of the distinctive aspects of the genre they practiced. We can thus sketch out an evolution of the elegiac discourse from Catullus' work through to Ovid's Amores, the last work to adhere strictly to the Latin erotic elegiac code

The history of literary genders and ideas, the semiology, the style, the metric and the literature in general are in the very centre of our research, but the greatest interest of this work lies in making apparent the evidence of continuity according to the different processes that enrich the Latin love elegy genders. Furthermore, it is noted that the principals of intertext and allusion, and hence of the metapoetry, along with the genders and genericity, appear in a hybrid writing manner very appropriate with the Augustan aesthetics of heterogeneity. As a result it is shown that the Latin love elegy is a rewriting which is based on already acquired knowledge, rich in auctorial, for new pacts of writing and lecture, therefore leaving space for a “proper Latin literary fact”. The perspective of this research is diachronic, literary (intertextuality, gender, genericity) and, at the same time, ideological

Resumen
Vitellogenin (Vtg) is a precursor to yolk-proteins produced in the liver of many invertebrates and non-mammalian vertebrates; its synthesis is stimulated by the hormone estradiol (E2). This study is the first to characterize vitellogenin synthesis in a placental viviparous elasmobranch, the yolk-sac placental bonnethead shark, Sphyrna tiburo. This study focused on determining where and when Vtg is produced, as well as what hormonal factors regulate Vtg production. The liver was confirmed as the site of Vtg production via immunohistochemistry. Immunoreactivity was also observed within granulosa cells of ovarian follicles; further experimentation is needed to determine if this is indicative of Vtg production by these cells. Using immunoblotting, the highest proportions of Vtg positive females were found in March, with Vtg production continuing into April and May. Putative Vtg production was found to begin in August for some individuals, with production continuing throughout the fall and winter months. In regards to hormonal regulation, immunohistochemical analysis identified receptors for E2 and progesterone (P4) within the liver. Comparison of the monthly E2 and Vtg cycles provides evidence that E2 stimulates Vtg production in S. tiburo, as high or increasing concentrations of E2 correlated with Vtg presence in the plasma. Preliminary results also suggest in vitro production of Vtg by liver tissue when exposed to E2. Comparison of the monthly P4 and Vtg cycles suggests P4 may inhibit Vtg synthesis, with higher levels of P4 found in the months when Vtg production declines. Additionally, the methods developed for this study were able to identify Vtg in the plasma of other elasmobranch species. Vtg detection in plasma may thus be an ideal new, nonlethal method for characterizing elasmobranch reproductive periodicity, which will aid in assessing population growth and allow for managers to possess more accurate information to make appropriate decisions for the populations.

Resumen
Reproductive biology is a necessary element for the management of elasmobranch fisheries. Traditionally, characterization of elasmobranch reproduction has involved lethal sampling to examine gross reproductive structures and development of embryos. However, this method is counterproductive to the conservation of shark populations. One non-lethal alternative is the measurement of serum hormones, which often vary according to reproductive events. Radioimmunoassay (RIA) has been used to measure hormone concentrations in reproductive endocrinology, but can be problematic for researchers. Alternatively, chemiluminescence immunoassays (CLIA) are routinely used for measuring circulating hormone concentrations in low-volume, non-extracted human serum samples. However these assays have not been previously examined for use with elasmobranch blood. In the first component of this study, I examined whether CLIA was a suitable alternative for detecting seasonal profiles of these hormones in the bonnethead, Sphyrna tiburo. This was accomplished by collecting serum from sexually mature male (n = 35) and female (n = 32) bonnetheads , measuring reproductive organs for maturity and reproductive stage, and measuring concentrations of testosterone (T) in males, and 17β-estradiol (E2) and progesterone (P4) in females using RIA and CLIA. CLIA was successfully validated for use with shark serum by assessing parallelism and spike recovery. CLIA-derived measurements were significantly correlated with those obtained with RIA (r = 0.809, 0.773, and 0.908 for T, E2, and P4, respectively; p

Resumen
Understanding the life history of marine wildlife is essential for the management of both commercial and recreational fisheries. Bonnetheads (Sphyrna tiburo) are a component of the small coastal shark (SCS) fishery complex, and are caught regularly in both types of fisheries. Despite being well studied in the Gulf of Mexico, little is known about bonnetheads from the U.S. Atlantic coast. The goal of the first component of this study was to provide new, key information on their life history to improve management of U.S. Atlantic populations, particularly by identifying reproductive seasonality, periodicity and fecundity. This was accomplished by examining sexually mature male and female bonnetheads, collected monthly (2012-2014) from South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida waters, and monitoring changes in reproductive tract morphology. Changes reflected a seasonal reproductive cycle with an annual breeding periodicity. Histology was used to confirm events and identify other important periods in the reproductive cycle, such as sperm storage in females. Overall, Atlantic coast bonnetheads were found to exhibit reproductive patterns similar to those reported in the Gulf with slight temporal shifts in the time of mating and ovulation and slightly lower fecundity ranging between 1 and 12 with an average (±SE) of 7±3.8. Additionally, the second component of this study aimed to understand gonadal sex hormone regulation in S. tiburo reproduction with a particular focus on female sperm storage. Circulating plasma sex hormones increased in association with specific reproductive events. Plasma 17β-estradiol and testosterone concentrations increased during sperm storage, whereas progesterone levels increased near the end of this stage. Immunocytochemical analysis of androgen, estrogen, and progesterone receptors in the oviducal viii gland, the organ that stores sperm in female bonnetheads, demonstrated that epithelial cells of sperm storage tubules and spermatozoa itself are direct targets for these hormones, playing a role in regulating this poorly understood process.

In summer 2012 a luxuriosus roman villa, dated to augustean age, is been discovered during an archeological escavation in Ciampino (Rome). A group of marble statues, showing the Niobids, is finded into the natatio pool. During the XIX century, in the same place, a lead pipe mentioning Valerius Messalla was discovered; this finding suggested that the villa was owned by this powerful senatorial gens. The research area, called Muro/Muri dei Francesi, is located beyond the last slope of Alban Hills in their congiuction point with Campagna Romana plan, in Rome's South-East suburbium. The plan, from the geo-morphological point of view, is crossed by a several natural ditches and a low straight ridge who link the Alban Hills to Tiber river valley: therefore – also tanks to the development of ancient roads network – this area well be one of most populated by roman aristocracy villas. The Ciampino's Niobids are similars to Florence Uffizi Museum Group, but different for the presence of some unknown characters and for iconographic rendering of details. This offer new possibilities for the knowledge and interpetation of the first Niobides group of which we dispose of an archaeological data set. The two research approaches are been: the collection and critical analysis of archives documents dated at XIX century and, as regards fieldwork research, the stratigraphic analysis of the available masonry structures (excavated for less than 40%), with the complementary realisation of detailed relief and graphic documentation. At last, the study and documentation of the archaeological materials coming from the excavation, which allowed, with sufficient tolerance, the chronology of the site to be determined

Resumen
Many elasmobranchs are considered top predators with worldwide distribution, and in general these fish play an important role in the transfer of energy from the lower to the upper trophic levels within the marine ecosystem. Despite this, little research has been done regarding the rates of prey ingestion, digestion, and the processes of energy and nutrient absorption. Specifically understudied is enzymatic digestion within the intestinal brush border, which functions to break down macromolecules into smaller subunits for luminal absorption across the gastrointestinal epithelium. Given their carnivorous diet, the present study sought to expand knowledge on nutrient intake in elasmobranchs by focusing on the uptake of products of protein metabolism. To accomplish this, sequence encoding Peptide Transporter 1 (PepT1), a protein found within the brush border membrane (BBM) of higher vertebrates that is responsible for the translocation and absorption of small peptides released during digestion by luminal and membrane-bound proteases, was molecularly identified in the bonnethead shark (Sphyrna tiburo) using degenerate primers based on conserved portions of known PEPT1 sequences from other vertebrates. Sequence encoding Peptide Transporter 2 (PepT2) was also isolated from the S. tiburo scroll valve intestine using the same methodology. PepT1 was then localized using immunocytochemistry with rabbit polyclonal anti-rat PEPT1 in the esophagus, stomach, duodenum, scroll valve intestine, rectum, and pancreas. Vesicle studies were used to identify the apparent affinity of the transporter, and to quantify the rate of uptake by its H+-dependent cotransporter properties, using 3H-glycylsarcosine as a model dipeptide. The results of this study provide insight into the rate and properties of food passage within S. tiburo, and can lead to future work on topics such as physiological regulation of protein metabolism and absorption and how it may vary in elasmobranchs that exhibit different feeding strategies.

Resumen
Previous research has indicated species-specific stress responses in sharks. To assess the biochemical effects of net capture and restraint, nineteen serum constituents were measured in three species of sharks: bonnethead, Sphyrna tiburo (Linnaeus, 1758), n = 36; blacktip, Carcharhinus limbatus (Muller and Henle, 1841), n = 33; and bull, C. leucas (Muller and Henle, 1841), n = 27. Sharks were captured in gill nets placed at various locations along the southwest coast of Florida between April and July, 1994. Stress level of each animal was judged in five categories using an index of behavioral response to capture and restraint devised for use in tag-recapture studies. These categories ranged from level I "minimal stress response" to level 5 "moribund or dead". The serum constituents assayed included: glucose, creatinine, uric acid, sodium, chloride, potassium, inorganic phosphorus, total and ionized calcium, total protein, albumin, globulin, alkaline phosphatase, lactate, lactate dehydrogenase; aspartate aminotransferase, triglycerides, cholesterol, and total iron. Hematocrit was also measured for each sample. There were significant intraspecific differences in several serum constituent values for all three species. With increased stress, S. tiburo had increased potassium, inorganic phosphorus, uric acid, alkaline phosphatase and lactate and decreased glucose levels (P < 0.05 ANOVA or Kruskal-Wallis). C. limbatus had increased uric acid, potassium, lactate, total and ionized calcium, inorganic phosphorus and alkaline phosphatase (P < 0.05), while C. leucas had increased potassium, inorganic phosphorus, aspartate aminotransferase, lactate and decreased glucose levels (P < 0.05). The wide variation observed in serum constituent values among species when compared with intraspecific differences in lifestyle, behavior, general morphology and environmental requirements may help explain differences in species-specific mortality rates previously documented.

The authors of latin brief poetry on which this study especially focuses didn't let chance arrange their works. A detailed examination of the esthetics of the poems, of their disposition in the books and collections, of the schemes they elaborate, of the progression they create, leads to the thesis that the conception of the global structure of a collection is essential in the latin neoterics and elegiacists' work ; it can even be noticed in the poems themselves, since some of them have clearly been especially written to respond to other ones in a detailed way. Each poet of our corpus (Catullus, Tibullus, Lygdamus, Sulpicia and Propertius) uses the arrangement of his own poetic materials to deliver a particular conception of the ideal design of a brief poems' collection, of the role and importance of brief poetry and of his own insertion in a certain poetic genealogy. Therefore, the present work shows how their respective manners progressively elaborate a whole conception of the birth, construction and development of latin elegy, as opposed to other brief genres

This study examines the use of color in the entirety of poetic works by Lucretius, Catullus, Virgil, Horace, Tibullus, Propertius, and Ovid. This study was conducted using a single reference tool of color-related terms, which allows a more thorough analysis of early Latin poetry than has typically been the case. To common terms such as albus, niger, and ruber, have been added numerous terms which implicitly signal the presence of color within the text, such as aurum (gold), ebur (ivory), marmor (marble), and sanguis (blood). A comprehensive inventory of color terms appears in a 292-pages appendix that contains summary tables showing where each term can be found in the works studied. It is therefore possible to immediately verify the presence or absence of a color term, and to map the frequency with which it appears in a particular poem or in the work of a particular poet. This study seeks to analyze and compare the use of color terms as used by each poet ; to highlight the symbolism as well as the color combinations and contrasts favored by each poet; to study the ways in which each poet paints portraits, landscapes, and various other scenes with words ; to raise questions about the absence or concentration of color in the heart of particular poems. By doing so, it becomes possible to demonstrate - in the case of epic, elegy, or satire - the profound coherence linking poetic style, the personality of the poet, the color palette, and the manner in which it is used

Resumen
Chapter 1: The great white shark, Carcharodon carcharias, is the most widely protected elasmobranch in the world, and is classified as Vulnerable by the IUCN and listed on Appendix III of CITES. Monitoring of trade in white shark products and enforcement of harvest and trade prohibitions is problematic, however, in large part due to difficulties in identifying marketed shark parts (e.g., dried fins, meat and processed carcasses) to species level. To address these conservation and management problems, I have developed a rapid, molecular diagnostic assay based on species-specific PCR primer design for accurate identification of white shark body parts. The assay is novel in several respects: It employs a multiplex PCR assay utilizing both nuclear (ribosomal internal transcribed spacer 2) and mitochondrial (cytochrome b) loci simultaneously to achieve a highly robust measure of diagnostic accuracy; it is very sensitive, detecting the presence of white shark DNA in a mixture of genomic DNAs from up to ten different commercially fished shark species pooled together in a single PCR tube; and it successfully identifies white shark DNA from globally distributed animals. In addition to its utility for white shark trade monitoring and conservation applications, this highly streamlined, bi-organelle, multiplex PCR assay may prove useful as a general model for the design of genetic assays aimed at detecting body parts from other protected and threatened species. Chapter 2: Sharks and their relatives (Class Chondrichthyes) were the among the first vertebrates to evolve internal fertilization, yet our understanding of mating and parentage in this ancient group lags far behind many other animal groups. This is especially surprising because many shark populations worldwide are experiencing severe declines in abundance, and conservation planners are in dire need of basic information on their reproductive natural history. Based on a few genetic and field observational studies, current speculation is that polyandrous mating and multiple paternity may be as common in sharks as they are in most other vertebrate groups. Here, I examine this idea by genetically analyzing paternity in the hammerhead, Sphyrna tiburo (bonnethead), from the west coast of Florida, using the largest and most geographically widespread sample of shark litters analyzed to date. Contrary to expectations based on results from a few other shark species, the ability of female bonnetheads to store sperm and observations of their social behavior, I found that over 80% of females produced litters sired by a single male (genetic monogamy). This is the first record of this genetic mating system in this ancient class of fishes. When multiple paternity does occur in S. tiburo, I found no evidence for the involvement of any more than one additional male, no consistent pattern of paternity skew between fathers and an overrepresentation of multiple paternity in bigger litters with larger mothers. My results suggest that sharks and their relatives may exhibit diverse mating strategies and, as a result, some species may have a reduced capacity to maintain genetic variation in the face of large-scale depletion or changes in sex-ratio.

Resumen
This thesis examines the hair imagery that runs through the works of Propertius, Tibullus, and Ovid. Comparative analysis of the elegists’ approaches to the motif, with particular emphasis on determining where and how each deviates from the cultural assumptions and literary tradition attached to each image, sheds light on the character and purposes of elegy as a genre, as well as on the individual aims and innovations of each poet. The Introduction provides some background on sociological approaches to the study of hair, and considers the reasons why hair imagery should have such a prominent presence in elegy. Chapter 1 focuses on the elegists’ engagement with the idea of cultus (‘cultivation’), and their manipulation of the connotations traditionally attached to elaborate hairstyles, of sophistication on the one hand, and immorality on the other, to suit an elegiac context. Chapter 2 looks at how the complexities of the power relationship between the lover and his mistress play out in references to violent hair-pulling. Chapter 3 focuses on the sometimes positively and sometimes negatively spun image of grey-haired lovers, as a reflection of the lover-poet’s own contradictory wishes for his relationship with his mistress; it also considers grey hair as a symbol of physical mortality, as contrasted with poetic immortality. Chapter 4 examines the use of images of loose hair (especially images of dishevelled mourning) to suggest connotations ranging from the erotic to the pathetic, and focuses on the effects the elegists achieve by using a single image to communicate multiple implications. The Conclusion considers the ‘afterlife’ of elegiac hair imagery: the influence that their approaches had on later authors’ handling of similar images.

Resumen
This thesis explores the representation of gender, desire, and identity in elegiac discourse. It does so through the lens of post‐structural and psychoanalytic theory, referring to the works of Michel Foucault, Judith Butler, Jessica Benjamin, and Laura Mulvey in their analyses of power, gender performativity, and subjectivity. Within this thesis, these concepts are applied primarily to the works of Tibullus, Propertius, and Sulpicia, ultimately demonstrating that the three love elegists seek, in their poetry, to construct subversive discourses which destabilise the categories by which gender and identity were determined in Augustan Rome. This discussion is supplemented by the investigation of Ovid’s use of elegiac discourse in Book 10 of his Metamorphoses, and the way in which it both comments upon Augustan love elegy and demonstrates a number of parallels with its thematic content. This thesis focuses especially on the representation of power relations within elegiac discourse, the various levels on which such relations operate and, finally, the possibilities for the contestation of and resistance to power, in addition to the motivations that might lie behind the poet‐lover’s frequent attraction and submission to it.

The heirs of Caesar promised their soldiers lands in Italy to facilitate mobilization for war. According to ancient authors, the triumvirate settled in Italian soil about 50. 000 veterans after the victory which led to massive expropriations. In fact, four of the five major poets of the Augustan period were affected by those expropriations. Virgil was probably deprived of his land by an unscrupulous veteran. Horace was involved with Caesar’s murderers, so he too was deprived of all his land. Sextus Propertius was deprived of the land of his family because his father had supported Lucius Antonius. Tibullus laid emphasis on the recent and sudden poverty of his family. Ovid wasn’t affected by the expropriations of 41-40 BC. However, he had important difficulties with his land because of his relagatio. Thus, roughly directly and critically, these poets made reference to expropriations. Then, as the war was over in Italy and their personal situation was getting better, they celebrated rural world and land ownership, the latter being the principal structure of Italian agriculture. Moreover, these poets wrote about gods and rituals used to protect domains. This thesis examines this particular historical situation in addressing poetic and engaged works of these five poets about lands ownership as well as about religious practices related to the guarantee of land property

The aim of this work is to investigate the reception of Tibullus during the Italian Quattrocento. The first part treats the transmission of the Corpus Tibullianum, including an analysis of the ms. Milan, Biblioteca Ambrosiana, R 26 sup., which is the most ancient manuscript of the collection. The second part, after a redefinition of Tibullus’ style, looks at the humanist studies of the Corpus, a material for the most part still unpublished: the annotations of Antonio Panormita, Cristoforo Landino, Tito Strozzi, Giovanni Pontano and Angelo Poliziano have been taken into consideration. Then we examined Bernardino Cillenio’s commentary, published in Rome in 1475 by G. Lauer. The third part considers the poetic reception of the Corpus, preferring those authors that have also annotated Tibullus’ poems: Antonio Panormita, Enea Silvio Piccolomini, Giovanni Marrasio, Landino, Poliziano, Tito Strozzi and Pontano. The last part includes also some considerations about future perspectives of our research.

Texto completo
Resumen
A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Arts, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy.
All the poems of Catullus and Tibullus and the first three books of Horace's Odes are investigated tor structures of parallelism and inverse paralelism (chiasmus) and thus the extent to which these devices were used is determined. Such structures are demonstrated for the first time for several poems. Sometimes additions or modifications are made to the structural analyses of other scholars, and sometimes their findings are confirmed. The notion that inverse parallelism was seldom used by Roman authors is dispelled. The freedom with which these devices were used, resulting in a great variety of deviations from strictly symmetrical structures, is demonstrated Both common and idiosyncratic features in the use of the devices by the three authors are shown. Several poems of each author are discussed to illustrate that the demonstration of a structure of parallelism or inverse parallelism is in itself an interpretative act, which can at the same time serve as a basis for further interpretation. In particular it is shown that structures of inverse parallelism often, if not always, iconically reflect the meaning of the poem (hence the title of the thesis) This ability or structures of inverse parallelism to reflect the meaning of the poem may partly account for the fact that they are used more frequently than are structures of parallelism. In the poems discussed structures of inverse parallelism iconically reflect the ideas of reversal, cyclical movement, non-progression/deadlock, balance and/or contrast and enclosure, as well as combinations of the above, such as a spiral (both progression and non-progression) or the combination of reversal and nonprogression. Continuity between the structural methods of Greek and Roman authors is demonstrated, and a theoretical framework is provided, which answers the questions how such structures can be determined, and what purposes, both practical and poetic, they serve. A literary-critical awareness of inverse parallelism in Antiquity is demonstrated. St. Augustine, especially, has a fairly developed theoretical frame of reference on the subject, in his De Genest ad Litteram

McMaster, Aven Sarah. "Liberalitas in Late Republican and Early Augustan Roman Poetry". Thesis, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/1807/26208.

Texto completo
Resumen
Liberalitas forms one of the central frameworks for defining social bonds within Roman society, and was part of how Roman poets constructed the world. This is most explicitly evident in the poets’ references to “patrons” and benefactors, but it extends much further. The poets worked within a broad framework of social conventions and expectations which must be understood in order to see how their poetry uses and responds to the concepts associated with liberalitas. Cicero’s de officiis and Seneca’s de beneficiis are therefore useful, as they offer idealised, prescriptive views of liberalitas in Roman society. Many scholars have investigated the relationships between poets and their patrons, including Peter White, Barbara Gold, James Zetzel, and Phebe Lowell Bowditch. I argue that any true understanding of the role of liberalitas in Roman poetry must also comprehend its importance in other areas. This dissertation focuses on the poetry of Catullus, Horace, Propertius, Tibullus, and Virgil in the Eclogues. The introduction addresses traditional liberalitas as defined by Cicero and Seneca in their works on benefits and duties. Chapter one illustrates how Catullus, Horace, and Tibullus display ideals similar to those of Cicero and Seneca and use the conventions of liberalitas for praising and blaming members of their social groups. Chapter two addresses the problems of status raised by liberalitas and investigates the strategies used by Catullus, Horace, Propertius, and Tibullus to mitigate these problems and further their social, literary, and aesthetic aims. Chapter three demonstrates how the love poets used and redefined the terminology and ideology of liberalitas to construct an obligation on the part of their beloveds to reciprocate the gifts given by the poets but reject the gifts given by rival lovers. Finally, Chapter four examines the role of liberalitas in formulating and expressing a poetic program in Virgil’s Eclogues, which points to its function in mediating the connection between ‘real-life’ political and social concerns and the literary preoccupations of Roman poets. The various applications of this concept demonstrated in these four chapters present the study of liberalitas as a useful and productive tool in the investigation of the poetry of this period.

Resumen
In summer 2012 a luxuriosus roman villa, dated to augustean age, is been discovered during an archeological escavation in Ciampino (Rome). A group of marble statues, showing the Niobids, is finded into the natatio pool. During the XIX century, in the same place, a lead pipe mentioning Valerius Messalla was discovered: this finding suggested that the villa was owned by this powerful senatorial gens. At last, the study and documentation of the archaeological materials coming from the excavation, which allowed, with sufficient tolerance, the chronology of the site to be determined.
