Resumen
AbstractThis article compares the epistemic roles of theoretical models and model organisms in science, and specifically the role of non-human animal models in biomedicine. Much of the previous literature on this topic shares an assumption that animal models and theoretical models have a broadly similar epistemic role—that of indirect representation of a target through the study of a surrogate system. Recently, Levy and Currie (2015) have argued that model organism research and theoretical modelling differ in the justification of model-to-target inferences, such that a unified account based on the widely accepted idea of modelling as indirect representation does not similarly apply to both. I defend a similar conclusion, but argue that the distinction between animal models and theoretical models does not always track a difference in the justification of model-to-target inferences. Case studies of the use of animal models in biomedicine are presented to illustrate this. However, Levy and Currie’s point can be argued for in a different way. I argue for the following distinction. Model organisms (and other concrete models) function as surrogate sources of evidence, from which results are transferred to their targets by empirical extrapolation. By contrast, theoretical modelling does not involve such an inductive step. Rather, theoretical models are used for drawing conclusions from what is already known or assumed about the target system. Codifying assumptions about the causal structure of the target in external representational media (e.g. equations, graphs) allows one to apply explicit inferential rules to reach conclusions that could not be reached with unaided cognition alone (cf. Kuorikoski and Ylikoski 2015).

Resumen
A theoretical model of the formation of gravity and such dialectical categories as time, speed of light and intranuclear superdense matter, directly related to it, are presented. Categories are forms of knowledge reflection about the universal laws of the objective world, its unity, interaction and development of its components. Gravity is the main creative derivative of the potential energy of the Universe. This is a product of the process of interference of quantum wave fluctuations of potential energy and coherent wave oscillations of the quark-gluon energy mechanism of atomic nuclei. The consequence of the most complex microwave interaction between the potential energy consumed by nuclei and the internal energy of atomic nuclei are ultrashort waves, representing electromagnetic γ-radiation (γ-quantum, photon, corpuscle). In areas of increased concentration of wave energy, when the anomalous threshold oscillation frequency of 734 Hz is reached, the interaction of locally manifested wave processes of quantum fluctuation and interference can form elementary particles with a dense mass, increased energy charge and other characteristics characteristic of baryonic matter. The frequency of 734 Hz, indistinguishable by man, corresponds to the time interval of 0.00136 seconds and the supposed boundary of the pulsating material Universe. Electromagnetic and gravitational radiations are actively formed on it, entropy and products of other energy processes corresponding to the bifurcation boundary of evolution decrease or increase. The relevance of the research lies in the expediency of systematics, structuring, systematization of fundamental knowledge about matter, its "origins" to clarify the methodological principles and the significance of the "original" energy evolution in natural science. The object of the research is gravity - one of the most important methodological categories in the form of fundamental time. The subject of the research is the fundamental properties of gravity, which ensure the existence and evolution of the matter of the Metagalaxy. The purpose of the research is virtual forms of the existence and evolution of gravity, and the main task to be solved is to clarify the significance of the wave quantum fluctuation of energy. The methodological tool for solving the problem is the numerous fundamental structural levels of the organization of the matter of the Universe, indicating its polygenic energy essence and evolutionary nature. The concept of a system of scientifically based, interconnected and logically linked scientific views based on many years of experience in small-medium-scale predictive studies in the oldest mining region of Russia - Eastern Transbaikalia. Encyclopedic natural-science knowledge of the matter of the Universe, fundamental hierarchical structures of its matter, cause-and-effect relationships of the functioning of energy systems, theoretical and practical models of the Earth's matter, as well as knowledge of the objective perception of the world, its laws and phenomena by collecting, computer processing of empirical data to solve the problem are used. . It is taken into account that dialectical materialism beyond the "visibility" (length) of light (optical) and electron waves is gradually being replaced by theoretical (philosophical) materialism based on the laws of logic and fractal. Gravity combines space and time into a single energy category called the Universe

Resumen
As evidenced by the sheer number of websites presently on the Internet and the exorbitant amount of dollars that are spent on maintaining corporate websites determining the successfulness of these websites is of the utmost importance. In building a successful website the design must match the organizationâ s objectives and these objectives need to be clearly defined. However, the objectives of a website differ depending upon the website type. As a result, from the user perspective, this results in varying ideas of satisfaction as well as success. Thus, from the user perspective determining success across websites is both goal and context specific. This dissertation investigated five variables which were believed to impact website satisfaction: information quality, system quality, perceived effectiveness, social influence, and trust. Theories in information systems success and information technology adoption provided theoretical foundations for this dissertation. The research was conducted by surveying multiple respondents, who were regular users of two different websites, each fitting into a different category within the taxonomy of websites. Structural equation modeling techniques were used to build the models of determinants of satisfaction for each website. The research results indicate that depending upon the type of website being evaluated different determinants of satisfaction were present. Four variables were found to be significant determinants of website satisfaction in the online community website: information quality, perceived effectiveness, social influence, and trust. However, in the information specific search website only three variables were found to significantly predict website satisfaction: information quality, system quality, and perceived effectiveness. Thus, this dissertation has shown that website usersâ determinants of satisfaction and overall successfulness is dependent upon the context of the website being evaluated and that determinants of satisfaction are goal specific. Several contributions were made by this study. In particular, this research is one of the first to empirically measure determinants of satisfaction, from the user perspective, in varying website contexts.

Cleghorn, Christopher Wesley. "A Generalized theoretical deterministic particle swarm model". Diss., University of Pretoria, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/33333.

Resumen
Particle swarm optimization (PSO) is a well known population-based search algorithm, originally developed by Kennedy and Eberhart in 1995. The PSO has been utilized in a variety of application domains, providing a wealth of empirical evidence for its effectiveness as an optimizer. The PSO itself has undergone many alterations subsequent to its inception, some of which are fundamental to the PSO's core behavior, others have been more application specific. The fundamental alterations to the PSO have to a large extent been a result of theoretical analysis of the PSO's particle's long term trajectory. The most obvious example, is the need for velocity clamping in the original PSO. While there were empirical fndings that suggested that each particle's velocity was increasing at a rapid rate, it was only once a solid theoretical study was performed that the reason for the velocity explosion was understood. There has been a large amount of theoretical research done on the PSO, both for the deterministic model, and more recently for the stochastic model. This thesis presents an extension to the theoretical deterministic PSO model. Under the extended model, conditions for particle convergence to a point are derived. At present all theoretical PSO research is done under the stagnation assumption, in some form or another. The analysis done under the stagnation assumption is one where the personal best and neighborhood best are assumed to be non-changing. While analysis under the stagnation assumption is very informative, it could never provide a complete description of a PSO's behavior. Furthermore, the assumption implicitly removes the notion of a social network structure from the analysis. The model used in this thesis greatly weakens the stagnation assumption, by instead assuming that each particle's personal best and neighborhood best can occupy an arbitrarily large number of unique positions. Empirical results are presented to support the theoretical fndings.

Resumen
Recent studies on the perception of disparity gradients show that the perceived difference in depth between two stimuli decreases continuously with increasing steepness of the disparity gradient, i.e., decreasing interocular distance between stimuli.1 This scaling effect is stronger for horizontal than for oblique orientations and also stronger for line stimuli than for point stimuli. We propose a model to explain the scaling effect based on minimizing an energy function. Since the visual system is not able to determine the retinal positions of the stimuli exactly, our model allows for uncertainty in these positions. Our energy cost function tries to find the smoothest possible surface allowing for this uncertainty. For the stimuli described above we analyzed the model mathematically and performed computer simulations when necessary.

Resumen
This paper documents the foreign asset ownership and investment theory of the dynamic GTAP model (GTAP-Dyn). The new investment theory offers a disequilibrium approach to modeling endogenously international capital mobility. It permits a recursive solution procedure, a feature that allows easy implementation of dynamics into any static AGE model without imposing limitations on the model's size. The method involves treating time as a variable, not as an index. Having time as a variable allows the construction of dynamic GTAP with minimum modifications to the existing structure of GTAP, by separating the theory of static GTAP from the length of run.
