The aim of this study was to determine how daily yield records might be used to improve the genetic evaluation of dairy cattle, which is currently based on 305-day yield predicted from monthly test day records. Daily milk yield records of 488 first lactation Holstein Friesian cows were obtained from one UK herd and summarised into weekly averages. Weekly fat, protein and lactose content records, from the same herd, were also obtained and each multiplied by test day yield to estimate fat, protein and lactose yields. Analysis of variance indicated that residual standard deviation (RSD) for each trait was lower when season of production was included in the model instead of the season of calving. The difference in RSD was more for fat and protein yields than the other traits. Lactation stage and season were the most important environmental factors affecting daily milk yield and composition while calving age had a small but significant (P<0.05) effect. Pregnancy accounted for 1.4 to 1.7% of the variation in yield traits but less than 0.4% of the variation in content traits. Its effects varied with gestation stage causing daily milk yield to decline by 3kg in the 8th month of gestation. A significant interaction between lactation and gestation stage was observed which suggested that the negative effect of pregnancy was higher in mid than late stages of lactation. Standard models of the lactation curve studied accounted for a substantial proportion of the variation in daily milk yields of typical lactations, which made up about half of the lactations studied. The other half was made up of atypical lactations such as highly persistent animals with almost flat curves whose lactation could not be adequately modelled with the standard curve functions. A regression spline model was derived which was as good as the best 3 parameter model and more flexible. These results indicate that models which make rigid assumptions about the shape of the lactation curve may not be very effective in accounting for the effect of lactation stage on daily yields. Yields of the same trait at different stages of lactation were positively correlated throughout but the correlation between yield and content traits was negative. Average correlation between milk yield and adjacent weeks was 0.93 declining to 0.61 between yields 41 weeks apart. Daily milk yields in mid and late stages of lactation were more highly correlated with 305-day yield than yields in early lactation. Covariance functions, using orthogonal polynomials up to the order of 4, were used to model genetic and permanent environmental covariances in a restricted maximum likelihood (REML) random regression (RR) model. Genetic parameters and breeding values were estimated for yield in every week of lactation. There were compared with estimates from a multivariate model, which considered yield at different stages as different traits, and a repeatability model without random regressions.

The stories are linked thematically through a relation of food to a character’s psyche in order to exemplify characterizations or conflicts. The element of food is either mundane or centered; however, all the stories respond with the emotion of fear that later results in an act of acceptance. The fear stems from two outcomes, not fitting in or losing something of value. The characters have to face their fears and accept their current situations in order to move forward.

In recent decades, extreme meteorological events have become more frequent and more severe. Flooding, heavy precipitation and droughts, in particular, are a few of these extreme events that can cause widespread property damage and loss of life. The climate is always changing and there is a general agreement that the changes will be more amplified and occur more rapidly due to anthropogenic influences. As a result, it is expected that the societal and economic impacts of heavy precipitation, floods, and droughts will increase as the climate continues to rapidly change. For these reasons, continued research to improve extreme precipitation predictions and long-term projections is vital. With improved projections, society will be able to improve their efforts to prepare for and implement better management practices to effectively adapt to the changing climate and help reduce the impacts of a changing climate.
A great deal of progress has already been made in extreme precipitation research in relation to climate change. Overall, the tendency for dry areas to get drier and wet areas to get wetter has been identified. However, much of the work has focused on the daily timescale, and much less is known about sub-daily precipitation. It is becoming increasingly more important to consider this time scale because of evidence that climate change could have more of an impact on sub-daily (e.g., 3-hourly) rather than daily precipitation. To complicate the matter, there is still a need to evaluate the performance of global climate models in reproducing the precipitation statistics at the sub-daily time scales.
The goal of this work is to evaluate the projected changes in precipitation at both the daily and sub-daily time scales and, more specifically, understand whether daily or sub-daily precipitation extremes will change more through the end of this century. However, to understand future projections it is first vital to analyze model accuracy and determine how well global climate models can reproduce the extreme precipitation statistics across the historical past. This is accomplished by comparing the historical runs for each model to observations during the same time period using several different methods, including a skill score analysis, using Taylor diagrams to visualize accuracy, and meridional plots that show intermodel variability.
The results from this analysis show model performance for daily extreme precipitation is higher than that of the 3-hourly extreme precipitation. Although there are few models that do an adequate job of producing reliable results at the sub-daily time scale, there is an overall significant increase in skill as the temporal resolution becomes coarser. Variability also exists among models, with sub-daily precipitation having more widespread variability across every latitude, but daily precipitation has a wider range in potential extreme precipitation that is focused more in the tropics. Model performance also varies by season, resulting in higher performance and less variability among models for individual seasons. These results also point to several models that consistently perform well for both sub-daily and daily extreme precipitation, but it is still worth remembering that there is no guarantee that a good performance during the historical period ensures a good performance in the futures as well.
The next part of the work focuses on the models with the highest performance in reproducing the observations. From there, it was possible to determine locations with the greatest changes in precipitation, the magnitude of changes, and whether sub-daily or daily extreme precipitation will be impacted more by climate change. Overall, extreme precipitation at both sub-daily and daily times scales is projected to increase globally. At the regional scale, precipitation is projected to primarily increase in the tropics, with smaller changes towards the poles. Areas of decreases in precipitation vary by model with the exception of a decrease in precipitation near the tropical Pacific Ocean that is seen in almost every model.

In this study, we use different techniques for forecasting and make the comparison of the techniques for the call volume of the emergency service Rescue 1122 Lahore, Pakistan. For the purpose of this study data is taken from emergency calls of Rescue 1122 from 1st January 2008 to 31 December 2009 and 731 observations are used. Our goal is to develop a simple model that could be used for forecasting the daily call volume. Two different approaches are used for forecasting the daily call volume Box and Jenkins (ARIMA) methodology and Smoothing methodology. We generate the models for forecasting of call volume and present a comparison of the two different techniques.

The social meaning of television news has been under transformation since the successes of cable news in the final years of the previous century. In their attempts to preserve viewership and to remain relevant, traditional broadcast news outlets increasingly emulate the conventions of cable news. Instead of retaining audiences, the result has been declining news content and a continued loss of viewers. Amid these industry transformations, the concept of “journalist” continues to undergo change. This evolution of the news allows for a decidedly unique response to news programming in The Daily Show With Jon Stewart. Though advertised as a half-hour comedy show, it has established itself as a consistent re-teller and producer of news, only possible in a postmodern era of journalism after objectivity. Amid the industry’s shift in priorities from objectivity and reporting to influencing, framing and re-telling the news, The Daily Show is considered as much an example of journalism as many of the shows currently in the news sphere. Although our society is currently saturated with information, this information often fails to penetrate the surface of the issues covered.
Too much information is as paralytic as ignorance. Recently, attention has shifted towards a re-evaluation of television news into something that will both help the public find the information they are searching for and give them the tools to make sense of and utilize that information. This concept of journalism as tool is present in every episode of The Daily Show. The show encourages viewers to peel away the layers of mediation of traditional newscasts, to recognize substance and the lack thereof, and become active consumers of information rather than passive receptacles submersed in irrelevant information. The Daily Show proves that a news show can inform, entertain and teach audiences how to critically process television as an informational medium.

The Daily Five is separated into five components: (a) Readto Self; (b) Read to Someone; (c) Listen to Reading; (d) Work on Writing; and (e) Word Works.In order to support the program's effectiveness, we have engaged in a comprehensive researchreview examining each component and its effectiveness to students' daily learning and practice.Highlights of our findings show that literacy has many layers; it goes beyond reading andwriting. Literacy is decoding, interpreting, predicting, communicating, and understanding viawords, texts, and the act of writing. Findings from these various sources prove that daily literacypractice is effective and necessary for students from kindergarten level to grade six and beyond.The Daily Five encompasses the research findings into a program that can be easily implementedinto any elementary school classroom.

Urbanism plays a major role in the development of cities, being a combination of cultural and urban living. Urbanism has brought various downfalls along with progress. Has urbanism made development a monotonous concept?
These days, cities are urbanizing at a fast rate not considering their future consequences. Having lived in Mumbai, I have seen it grow into a megacity. The countless problems that urbanism has brought to accommodate the massive amount of people migrating into the city has affected the quality of life of people immensely. However, is it for the better or worse? People all over the country want to have a piece of Mumbai, the city of dreams. This growth in the population has overpowered the city.
Mumbai is famous for its railway system. It is the lifeline of the city. However, due to the amount of people using this system, the travel is more of a chaos. Every railway station has a main access road filled with hawkers and commercial storefronts. People in Mumbai are always in a rush, so these hawkers and commercial stores are a necessity to their daily life. People shop for their daily necessities while returning home to save time. However, these streets are extremely chaotic and crowded. My thesis focuses on how this space can be utilized by three consumers - the traveler, the shopper and the one who does both. It aims to decongest this main street and make travelling by local trains convenient. The site I have chosen is located in the heart of Mumbai city and is one of the most important railway station on the Western Suburban railway system. It is known as Dadar railway station. More than 500,000 people use this railway station daily. With the maximum number of incoming pedestrian traffic, my design can be used as an example for other railway stations throughout Mumbai.Master of Science

My goal was to examine how experiences and behaviors of individuals and their romantic partners impact relationships on a daily basis. I conducted three separate but empirically and conceptually related studies. For all three papers, the sample was both members of heterosexual romantic relationships (N = 164 couples, 328 individuals) who completed measures each day for seven days. The papers were informed by tenets from interdependence theory and the conservation of resources model. The main purpose of the first paper was to examine a set of relational constructs (i.e., satisfaction, commitment, closeness, conflict, ambivalence, maintenance, and love) to determine which constructs fluctuated daily. All seven relational constructs showed significant within-person variability and were thus appropriate for further daily investigation. With this information, the next step was to understand how to foster positive relationships by examining what daily experiences were associated with those fluctuations. In the second paper I examined whether daily hassles and uplifts were associated with same-day and next-day feelings about the relationship. For same-day effects, I found that hassles were associated with decreased positivity and increased negativity about relationships, whereas uplifts were largely associated with increased positivity. I also found interactions between hassles and uplifts, suggestive of "blunting" effects whereby the positive effects of uplifts were nullified by high levels of hassles. For the next-day effects, I unexpectedly found that uplifts were associated with

Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited.The daily flight schedule at Training Air Wing-Two (TW-2) is built manually each day by squadron scheduling officers (SKEDSOs). They rely on their intuition, experience and sound judgment to output a flight schedule. Each SKEDSO spends eight hours a day on this task, but currently there is no measure of the efficiency a given flight schedule. Our goal is to enhance the current planning process by alleviating many of the tedious tasks through an automated optimization program. To that end, this research develops Flight Training Scheduler (FTS), an optimization-based tool, to aid the SKEDSO in production of daily flight schedules. FTS allows the SKEDSO to place an objective, value-oriented metric on the total events scheduled. A typical instance of this problem for TW-2's Phase II students consists of approximately 30 students, 65 flight events and 35 instructor pilots. FTS provides fast, automated guidance to the SKEDSOs that can help them increase throughput of students in the advanced strike training syllabus.

The aim of this study is to get some approach which can help in improving the predictions of daily temperature of Umeå. Weather forecasts are available through various sources nowadays. There are various software and methods available for time series forecasting. Our aim is to investigate the daily maximum temperatures of Umeå, and compare the performance of some methods in forecasting these temperatures. Here we analyse the data of daily maximum temperatures and find the predictions for some local period using methods of autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA), exponential smoothing (ETS), and cubic splines. The forecast package in R is used for this purpose and automatic forecasting methods available in the package are applied for modelling with ARIMA, ETS, and cubic splines. The thesis begins with some initial modelling on univariate time series of daily maximum temperatures. The data of daily maximum temperatures of Umeå from 2008 to 2013 are used to compare the methods using various lengths of training period. On the basis of accuracy measures we try to choose the best method. Keeping in mind the fact that there are various factors which can cause the variability in daily temperature, we try to improve the forecasts in the next part of thesis by using multivariate time series forecasting method on the time series of maximum temperatures together with some other variables. Vector auto regressive (VAR) model from the vars package in R is used to analyse the multivariate time series. Results: ARIMA is selected as the best method in comparison with ETS and cubic smoothing splines to forecast one-step-ahead daily maximum temperature of Umeå, with the training period of one year. It is observed that ARIMA also provides better forecasts of daily temperatures for the next two or three days. On the basis of this study, VAR (for multivariate time series) does not help to improve the forecasts significantly. The proposed ARIMA with one year training period is compatible with the forecasts of daily maximum temperature of Umeå obtained from Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI).

This thesis is a practice-based inquiry into contemporary Reportage Drawing in the UK. The role of the practice in present day, its various forms and purposes and how digital media has influenced both the working process and reception of such work, is discussed through comparisons of visual work and theoretical engagement from practitioners. Verbal and visual contributions from current artists about their methods, means and motivations are included to present a clear picture of the varied forms of documentary drawing. This research is structured around questions and issues raised about the process of Reportage Drawing from original reportage drawings made observing everyday life in Kisumu, western Kenya. It begins with a brief historical overview of Reportage Drawing and develops with chapters visually engaging with the drawings from Kisumu and other artist's contirbutions. The main body of drawings is designed to be viewed as a visual display as specific groups of drawings create a dialogue about the various issues raised. At the heart of this research is the investigation into observational drawing, the presence of the reportage artist as a documenter of the every day and the question of the importance of this specific field of art. Attention is paid to the practical aspects of making work as this often influences artists' choice in engaging in this form of drawing while reasons behind the commissioning of reportage artists are also elaborated on. This all contributes to the objectives of this thesis, which is to create the start of a database of contemporary reportage artists, present a clear picture of the nature of reportage drawing in' present day, including its limitations, and reflect on my own work in the light of others' while championing this practice.

Perú Daily Chef, es un modelo de emprendimiento en el Perú totalmente novedoso en su oferta de valor y entrega al cliente. Como todo proyecto, primero se tuvo la idea, en este caso innovadora en el medio, por lo que fue completamente necesario realizar la investigación del mercado, necesaria para validar el modelo de negocio, sobre todo la oferta de valor que se quiere trasladar al cliente. Para esto se utilizaron entrevistas personales y encuestas para capturar muchos datos, los cuales fueron tabulados y analizados para tomar la decisión de iniciar Perú Daily Chef. Basado en las encuestas y estudios realizados, el segmento de mercado estará orientado a personas dispuestas a cocinar, de estilo de vida sofisticado de los niveles socioeconómicos A y B, que viven en determinados distritos. De acuerdo a la encuesta, las personas de nuestro público objetivo que comprarían los kits, compuestos de 3 unidades en promedio, serían 11.281 clientes mensuales, resultando en 390.388 unidades por año, aproximadamente. Sin embargo, para el inicio de las ventas asumimos un startup de 30% (117.116 unidades vendidas) para el primer año y un crecimiento del 20% para el segundo y tercer año y luego de un 5% los dos últimos años debido al ingreso de nuevos competidores y madurez del negocio. Los costos de insumos han sido estimados sobre la base del costo real de uno de los platos más conocidos de nuestra gastronomía criolla y altamente valorado y los costos administrativos sobre la base de datos actuales. Los gastos de marketing comprenden el desarrollo de la página web, Net Framework y la configuración de los equipos móviles que serán requeridos al inicio de proyecto. La inversión total requerida es de 235.217 soles en el año 2015 (año 0) que incluye el capital de trabajo, mobiliario, instrumentos y programación de la página web. Includes bibliography.This thesis describes the results of a study to establish whether climate variables could be usefully modelled on a daily basis. Three stochastic models are considered for the description of daily climate sequences, which can then be used to generate artificial sequences. The climate variables under consideration are rainfall, maximum and minimum temperature, evaporation, sunshine duration, windrun and maximum and minimum humidity. A simple Markov chain-Weibull model is proposed to model rainfall. Three multivariate models (one proposed by Richardson (1981), two new) are suggested for modelling the remaining climate variables. The model parameters are allowed to vary seasonally, while the error term is assumed to follow an autoregressive process. The models were validated and their general performance·was found to be satisfactory. Some weaknesses were identified and are discussed. The. main conclusion of this study is that daily climate sequences can indeed be usefully described by means of stochastic models.

This study is focused on clients' daily experiencing of stress, and measures how this stress might affect their implementation of ideas and recommendations from therapy. Typically, clients attend therapy with the intention of making positive changes. Part of the therapeutic process involves clients completing therapeutic work in their daily lives (Conklin, Strunk, Cooper, 2017); however, stressful tasks and other elements often preclude this therapeutic work from occurring (Kazantzis & L'Abate, 2005). In this study we examine which interventions from therapy are most likely to be attempted at home, and the level of stress in making these attempts. A series of multi-level models were used, controlling for daily stress and examining partner effects. This study will be viewed from the conceptual lenses of window of tolerance (Siegel, 1999) and the Yerkes-Dodson law (Hanoch, Vitouch, 2004) on stress.

Relationship satisfaction is a popular variable to consider when looking at long-term success for couples. Research indicates positive and negative events have an impact on relationship satisfaction. Considering the influence of the Vulnerability-Stress-Adaptation framework, the present study focuses on the daily impact of positive and negative events that happen outside of therapy on couple relationship satisfaction for couples seeking therapy. Daily diary methods were used to collect data, a first for using this method with clinical couples. Random effects and multilevel models of analysis controlled for days and couples. Results suggest that on any given day, positive events impact both male and female daily relationship satisfaction. Findings also propose that these events outside of therapy tend to occur more frequently in the evening on any given day, specifically for negative events. Understanding these findings, therapists have an opportunity to use therapy as a tool to enhance adaptive processes for couples in order for couples to continue experiencing higher levels of couple satisfaction.

There are over 15.5 million cancer survivors in the U.S. currently, increasing to over 20 million by 2026. Long-term cancer survival has raised awareness for the issues that affect quality of life (QoL) after treatment. Fatigue and subjective cognitive dysfunction are common quality of life concerns for survivors but little is known regarding prevalence of these problems in daily life. The purpose of the current project is to examine these concerns after treatment using data from a 2 week daily diary study of breast cancer survivors up to 3 years post-treatment. Of importance is determining the factors that contribute to reporting decreased QoL.
Taken together, our findings suggest that within-persons, survivors who reported worse mood and physical function tended to also report higher levels of fatigue. Similarly, subjective reporting of cognitive function is influenced by current mood and physical symptoms such as fatigue. Demographic characteristics and depressive symptoms prior to the study were unrelated to fatigue and subjective cognitive function. This dissertation advances the current understanding of daily QoL issues. These findings also highlight the importance of capturing these experiences in daily life.

Although the yellow press has been in existence in Great Britain and the USA since the start of the 19th century, it has only recently been introduced in the South African media environment.
The mainstream press like Rapport and Beeld have showed certain characteristics of the yellow press for a while now, but rather present a combination of both trivial and more serious news to the reader. The arrival of the yellow media which brought along a more sensational approach to news became also visible in more serious papers. This phenomenon is called "tabloidisation".
The yellow press can be distinguished from serious papers on the basis of its nature and presentation. These characteristics can be divided into three categories, namely news themes, language and style, and presentation.
The yellow press can be recognised by the amount of news items that focus on scandals and gossip involving celebrities, sex and crime. These media communicate in a informal and an easy understandable way with the readers,. These publications often make use of crude language and the stories are mostly people-driven.
The yellow press publication can be seen as an entertainment package, because the aim is to entertain the reader. A vivid news package is presented to the reader by using bold headlines, large photos, graphics, colour and a captivating front page.
This study investigates the characteristics of the yellow press. What is the impact of acalculia upon an individual’s everyday life? In clinical practice, a few measures of Activities of Daily Living are available. In these batteries, however, numerical abilities were not distinguished from other abilities. As a consequence, no instrument has been made available so far to measure the nature and the extent of damage to everyday life specifically brought by acalculia in a given individual. The first aim of this series of studies was to build and validate an instrument, the Numerical Activities of Daily Living (NADL), designed to measure this impact. The first section of the thesis describes the psychometric properties of the newly created NADL and the specific profiles observed among patients suffering of several neurological diseases (a specific study was devoted to neurofibromatosis type 1) by using this instrument; patients with a right hemisphere focal lesion were also the object of a specific study). A further development of NADL (NADL-Children) was built for the assessment of numerical activities of daily living in children: it helped to predict math school performance after the first year of primary school.
In the second section we deepened one particular aspect of daily living activities requiring numbers (i.e. dealing with finances) found to be critical in our studies employing NADL. Indeed, the loss of financial capacity can have serious legal, economical, and personal consequences on an individual. Therefore, we additionally created a tool (Numerical Activities of Daily Living - Financial; NADL-F) that was also successfully validated in clinical populations in Italy as the second scope of this thesis. We also explored the differences in financial and numerical domains between MCI and healthy controls by means of NADL and NADL-F. The cognitive domains found to be involved in the deficit may be appropriate targets for future intervention studies aimed at preserving functional independence in individuals with MCI. Finally we also correlated the performance in the NADL and NADL-F test with anatomical brain changes. The investigation of the neural correlates of financial and other daily numerical abilities will help us to better define the knowledge of this high-level functions; moreover the neuroimaging studies will shed light on the brain areas related to the performance in financial tasks, and will be useful to find out the predictors of the time-course of decline in financial capacities.Qual'è l'impatto dell'acalculia sulla vita quotidiana? Nella pratica clinica, solo pochi strumenti sono disponibili. In queste batterie, oltretutto, le abilità numeriche non vengono distinte dalle altre abilità della vita quotidiana. Di conseguenza non vi è alcuno strumento che possa misurare l'impatto della acalculia nella vita quotidiana. Il primo obiettivo di questa serie di studi è stato dunque quello di costruire e validare uno strumento, il Numerical Activities of Daily Living (NADL), per misurare questo impatto. La prima sezione della tesi descrive le proprietà psicometriche del test NADL ed in particolar modo, vengono esplorati diversi profili di errori specifici per ogni singola patologia neurologica considerata ad esempio nei pazienti con neurofibromatosi e nei pazienti con lesione emisferica destra. Un ulteriore sviluppo del NADL (NADL-Children) è stato costruito al fine di valutare le abilità numeriche della vita quotidiana nei bambini. Nella seconda sezione viene approfondito un particolare aspetto delle attività di vita quotidiana in cui l'uso dei numeri è essenziale, l'uso del denaro. La perdita della capacità finanziaria può avere delle serie implicazioni sul piano legale ed economico oltre che personale. Abbiamo dunque creato uno strumento specificatamente pensato per questo fine (Numerical Activities of Daily Living - Financial; NADL-F). Il secondo obiettivo della tesi è stato quello di validare lo strumento per poterlo rendere diponibile in Italia e applicarlo a differenti popolazioni cliniche. Abbiamo inoltre esplorato le differenze nei domini numerici e finanziari sia in soggetti di controllo sani che in pazienti con deterioramento cognitivo lieve utilizzando sia il NADL che il NADL-F. I domini cognitivi che sono risultati essere implicati nel deficit potrebbero essere l'obiettivo di futuri interventi riabilitativi di studi successivi che hanno come obiettivo quello di preservare l'indipendenza funzionale e l'autonomia dei pazienti con deterioramento cognitivo lieve. Infine, abbiamo correlato la performance sia al NADL che al NADL-F con le differenze volumetriche cerebrali associate sia nei pazienti che nei controlli. Lo studio dei correlati neurali delle abilità numeriche e finanziarie ci aiuterà a fare maggiore chiarezza nello studio di queste funzioni di alto livello. Inoltre gli studi di neuroimmagine potranno chiarire le aree cerebrali legate alla performance in questi compiti che saranno utili per trovare dei predittori del declino nel corso del tempo di queste capacità.

The concept of daily site reporting is not new to the construction industry. For years, superintendents have been completing daily site reports by pencil and paper and then filing them away at the end of the day. In the event of a construction dispute, the company is faced with the tedious task of having to search through these reports for the pertinent information. Often, this task is further complicated by the fact that much of the data was entered without standard formats and descriptions.
Daily site reporting can benefit from standardization and computerization. The objective of this thesis was to develop a conceptual design of a micro-computer based Daily Construction Site Reporting System (DSRS) which would operate as an integral part of a construction project monitoring and control system. By tracking a project on a daily basis throughout its construction duration, the DSRS is able to provide immediate feedback to the Scheduling and Cost Control Systems. This is an important step towards real-time monitoring and control of a construction job. With this system in place, not only can claims preparation be facilitated, but status information on individual activities, frequency of occurrence of different problem types, and their impact on achieving productivity and scheduled targets may also be generated. Examples of such analysis using project information are provided.
The DSRS consists of a Data Collection System and a Data Reporting System. The development of the former involved designing data collection forms and gradually improving them by field testing. The sample output reports presented in this thesis were prepared with the data collected on a local high-rise condominium project using these forms. A prototype Data Collection System has been programmed for a micro-computer using dBASE III PLUS. The worldwide challenges to achieve cost effective protection against global warming impacts and to acquire reliable decision making tools continually force new developments in the area of climate change research. Climate change impacts projections involve several steps: emission scenarios generation, Global Circulation Models and Regional Climate Models (GCM/RCM) runs, downscaling, impact model running, analysis of results and decision making.
Unfortunately, GCM/RCMs outputs are often biased and need to be processed before being fed into impact models. This thesis describes the effort carried out to alleviate the burden of downscaling coarse hydro-climatology data outputs from GCM/RCM and making results readily available for climate change impact analysis for specific regions, particularly in the African continent. GCM/RCM outputs are highly unreliable at the sub-grid scale to be used for region specific
impact analysis (Wilby, Hay, & Leavesly, 1999). Furthermore, raw GCM/RCM outputs are often downscaled under the premises that the latter offer very coarse spatial resolution. The Internet is a common resource for users of climate change data to access relevant information. Web-based interfaces offer users the capability to retrieve such data. This thesis involves the development of a new web-portal, which addresses the demand for climate change data at the daily scale. It is a user-friendly interactive web-based interface with
multiple functionalities including: capacity to process information, capacity to search, sort, retrieve and filter data and download features. Six climate variables are considered in this project: precipitation, maximum temperature, minimum temperature, wind speed, relative humidity and solar radiation. The aforementioned climate variables have been downscaled to specific geographical locations and results have been made available at a fine temporal
resolution – the daily scale. The data portal currently hosts climate change data for nine stations in western Africa: Agadez, Brini N’Konni, Gaya, Maine Soroa, Maradi Airport, Niamey Airport, Tahoua, Tillabery and Zinder Airport. The above mentioned climate stations are all located in Niger. Nonetheless, the project aims to expand and cover further ground in Africa. Quantile - Quantile downscaling, also known as Quantile-Quantile mapping, matching or
transformation is a statistical procedure used in this project to downscale raw GCM/RCM outputs. GCM/RCM outputs from the AMMA-Ensemble sets under the SRES A1B scenario were used as raw data.

The engagement in multiple activities in the workplace leads to the challenge of managing several tasks. When managing multiple tasks, it may be difficult to remember to complete all tasks. Within an operations team at a hedge fund, there are demands that all trades are reported by the end of the day to the correct prime brokerage. This thesis examines the research question: How can a GUI be designed to remind and aid users to verify that trade information has been managed correctly? The research was conducted at a financial company, and focused on improving the workflow for one of the company’s clients and its operations team. To identify the challenges of a financial operator, contextual inquiries were conducted, followed by a design workshop to generate design ideas. The results were used as inspiration for the prototype of a GUI. The prototype was evaluated through cognitive walkthroughs, expert review, and with end users. The prototype was found to aid financial operators to verify if there was any work left, but the reminder aspect would need to be examined with a real system during an extended period.Att engagera sig i flertalet aktiviteter på en arbetsplats leder till utmaningen att hantera många uppgifter. När det finns många uppgifter att hantera, kan det vara svårt att komma ihåg att slutföra alla uppgifter. Inom ett operationsteam på en hedgefond finns krav att alla värdepappersaffärer ska vara rapporterade innan dagens slut till rätt huvudmäklarfirma (prime brokerage). Denna uppsats undersöker forskningsfrågan: Hur kan ett GUI designas för att påminna och underlätta för användaren att verifiera att information om värdepappersaffärer har hanterats korrekt? Forskningen genomfördes på ett finansiellt företag och fokuserade på att underlätta arbetsflödet för en av företagets kunder och dess operationsteam. För att identifiera utmaningarna för en finansiell operatör genomfördes kontextuella intervjuer, vilka följdes av en designworkshop för att generera designidéer. Resultaten användes som inspiration till en prototyp för ett GUI. Prototypen utvärderades genom kognitiv genomgång (cognitive walkthrough), expertgranskning och med slutanvändare. Prototypen ansågs underlätta för finansiella operatörer att verifiera om det fanns kvarvarande uppgifter, men påminnelseaspekten skulle behöva undersökas ytterligare med ett fullt utvecklat system under en längre period.

Childcare provided by extended family members (mainly grandparents), operating in the non-marketed, unpaid, informal economy, accounts for the largest proportion of all childcare used by working parents in the UK. Yet policymakers continue to consider childcare needs and provision in terms of formal childcare only such as day nurseries, registered childminders and out-of-school clubs. This thesis provides much needed insight into the socio-cultural, political and economic processes which influence childcare selection, observing the way in which individual (or household) agency and structural constraints interact and highlighting the potential tension between social well-being and economic rationality. This is considered within the context of household provisioning, and the interdependence of the complementary (or informal) and formal economies, by demonstrating the vital role of `family childcare' as an unpaid contribution from mainly non-resident grandparents which complements the formal economy by allowing parents to work, while also contributing to household livelihoods and the social well being of working parents. The positive and negative aspects of the family childcare relationship have been explored in an empirical study of two socio-economically contrasting city wards of Newcastle upon Tyne, providing statistical evidence of the high levels of use of 'family childcare' in particular, presented with other data which offers a more `rounded understanding' of the parents' and childcarers' subjective experience. This in-depth study contributes to the contemporary debates about family obligation and normative consensus, and the 'nature of care' and whether or not care provided by family (or friends and neighbours) should be paid. The key warning from this study is that the current 'taken for granted' view held by the UK Government ignores the potential for family conflict created by excessive dependence on family childcare, and the objective consequences in terms of lost income and future pension entitlements for those providing it (mainly grandparents). The longer-term implications for the planning of childcare provision are considered, focusing on ways in which the beneficial aspects of the family childcare relationship could be preserved, at least on a part-time basis, by providing proper short and longterm support. This looks to the future of the value of care in all of society, recognising that formal childcare has a part to play, but that not everyone wants to relinquish all care to the market, calling for systems that facilitate the combination of childcare to fit the social, moral and economic circumstances of parents and carers.
