Resumen
Thai culture has been discussed in several studies, yet such discussion is fixed and fails to consider the complexity and dynamism of Thai culture in response to the changing circumstances within society. This qualitative study employed an innovative photo-elicitation technique, utilizing online semi-structured interviews, to explore eighteen Thai university students’ perceptions of Thai culture and to establish whether or not their perceptions differ from prescribed ethnic, national, and international qualities. Data from the Thematic Analysis demonstrate that Thai university students’ perceptions differ from traditional Thai cultural values in terms of the openness of their sexual attitudes and behavior, the equal relationships between younger and older people, and the promotion of gender equality. Using the notion of small cultures as a conceptual framework, the findings add variety to Thai cultural values and beliefs and raise questions about an imagined conception of national cultures, leading to cultural generalizations by setting up stereotypes of others. Taken together, this study suggests moving beyond generalizations or stereotypes about national groups, or the essentialist view of culture, supporting the notion that culture is dynamic and complex and unrestricted by national boundaries. This study contributes to wider scholarship on intercultural communication by demonstrating that there are a variety of behaviors and perceptions of Thai culture within a single group of Thai people, highlighting that Thai culture is constantly evolving and never fixed.

Resumen
Thailand is a member and founding member of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, as well as a member of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation, the Asia-Europe Meeting and the World Trade Organization. As one of the ancient countries in Southeast Asia with a history of more than 700 years, the development of its culture runs through the development of Thailand from ancient times to the present, and has a far-reaching impact on the development of Thai society that cannot be ignored. As for the development process of Thai culture, especially the formation and roots of culture, it is inevitable to involve the penetration and influence of foreign culture, and the so-called foreign culture can be divided into Eastern culture and Western culture. Western culture is generally synonymous with European and American culture; Oriental culture is more representative of traditional Chinese culture and ancient Indian culture. Geographically, Thailand is located in Southeast Asia, that is, in the middle of China and India. At the same time, from the perspective of cultural regional distribution, Thai culture is also located between the two eastern cultural regions of Chinese culture and Indian culture. To sum up, the influence of foreign cultures on the development of Thai culture cannot be underestimated or ignored. That's what we're talking about today: the influence of foreign cultures on the development of Thai culture.

Resumen
The present study focuses on the plant naming system in the Thai language based on 1) Brent Berlin’s general principles of categorization of plants and animals in traditional societies (Berlin, 1974, 1992) which suggest that it is worthwhile to think about a plant taxonomy system on the basis of plant names since the names provide the valid key to folk taxonomy and 2) Lakoff’s central guiding principles of cognitive linguistics (Lakoff and Johnson, 2003 and Lakoff 1987). Data on plant names collected from printed materials are selectively analyzed. The study examines the linguistic structure, folk taxonomy and conceptualization of plant terms in the Thai language. It is found that there exists in the Thai language a complex and practical plant naming system establishing a relationship between language, cognition and culture.

Resumen
The culture is a key factor that profoundly changes our perception of the world. The cultural influences on the leadership aspects need to be taken into particular account in order to achieve an effective leadership. The main purpose of this thesis is to provide an overview of the relationship between the culture and the way in which leadership is perceived/exercised in Thailand. The case study is represented by the current situation in Thailand. The aim is to focus on Thai case in order to demonstrate that leadership styles cannot be imported and exercised in the same way across different cultures and countries. A leadership style may have different effects and meanings in relation to the cultural environment in which it is exercised. Understanding a culture is the essential step in order to consider the real effects of a leadership approach.

Resumen
Much has been written about the sentencing systems and practices of Western common-law jurisdictions, but little is known about those of Thailand, an Eastern civil-law country. This thesis fills this gap in the literature by identifying key characteristics of Thai sentencing culture and proposing a theory for understanding them. The focus is not on the Penal Code but on Yee-Tok, a judicially self-imposed form of sentencing guidance, the details of which are not publicly available and whose role in sentencing decision-making remains invisible to those beyond the judiciary. My aim is to find out how Yee-Tok works in the pursuit of consistency and accountability in sentencing. The study finds that consistency and accountability are not alien concepts to Thai sentencers. Even though each lower court has a different Yee-Tok, evidence from focus groups of lower court judges appears to suggest that the differences between each Yee-Tok may be limited. In addition to the duty to sentence in accordance with the Penal Code monitored by the higher courts, Thai lower court judges, by convention, are expected to comply with Yee-Tok in their court and to consult their Chief Judge before departing from it. Although there is no statutory obligation to comply with Yee-Tok, this research finds that most judges appear to wish to comply with Yee-Tok. Consistency in sentencing outcomes in each court is achieved due to the compliance of all judges with the Yee-Tok of their court. Accountability in sentencing is understood as the need to ensure that sentencers adhere to judicial custom and observe high moral standards. Three main characteristics of Thai sentencing culture were identified in this research: conformity in sentencing decision-making; the tendency to impose prison sentences relatively frequently; and the lack of demand in the eyes of the judiciary for public accountability in sentencing. These characteristics can be explained by a theory based on two conceptual building blocks: the judicial structure of a career judiciary; and Thailand’s political, social and cultural context. This study seeks to understand Thai sentencing. However, the findings also have implications for the fields of comparative criminal justice, comparative law and comparative judicial studies.

Prasannam, Natthanai. "Mnemonic communities : politics of World War II memory in Thai screen culture." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/12247.

Texto completo
Resumen
This thesis examines the politics of World War II memory in Thai screen culture with special reference to films and television series produced between the 1970s and the 2010s. Framed by memory studies and film studies approaches, the thesis hopes to answer 1) how WW II memory on screen is related to other memory texts: monuments, museums and commemorative rituals and 2) how the memory is coded by various genres: romance, biopic, combat film and horror. The project relies on a plurimedial network which has not yet been extensively studied by film scholars in Thailand. Through the lens of memory studies, the on-screen memory is profoundly intermingled with other sites of memory across Thailand and beyond. It potentially is counter-memory and vernacular memory challenging the state's official memory. The politics of WWII memory are also engaged with cultural politics in Thailand in terms of class, gender and ethnicity. The politics of commoners and trauma are given more voice in WWII memory compared to other moments of the national past, which are dominated by the royal-nationalism. From film studies perspectives, the genres mediating WWII memory are shaped by traditions of Thai-Thai and transnational screen culture; the Thai WWII combat film is a newly proposed genre. The thesis also explores directors, the star system, exhibition and reception. The findings should prove that WWII memory on Thai screen serves their roles in memory institutions which construct and maintain mnemonic communities as well as the roles in entertainment and media institutions. Another crucial implication of the research is that politicising WWII memory on the Thai screen can illuminate how memory and visual texts travel. The research likewise manifests its contributions to a better understanding of how Thai screen culture can be positioned within both global memory culture and global screen culture.

Srisai, Suttanipa. "Saang Kwaampratabjai : the influence of Wattana-dharm Thai on Thai PR practice." Thesis, University of Stirling, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/1893/3087.

Texto completo
Resumen
This thesis describes how and what Wattana-dharm Thai [Thai culture] has influenced Thai PR practice through the eyes of Thai PR managers and practitioners. It also provides some background information about the evolution of Thai PR practice to link to the current Thai PR practice. The study employs a qualitative paradigm with in-depth interviews as the main method. Documentary sources are mostly used as a supplement. This thesis provides detailed qualitative data describing how Thai public relations (PR) practitioners operate in Thailand both offline and online. The findings highlighted that Wattana-dharm Thai has a strong influence on Thai PR practice. There are eight main Wattana-dharm Thai aspects that influence Thai PR practice: 1) Relationship orientation (relationships in a Thai style including Bunkhun, Pen-Mitr, and Alum aluay relationships); 2) Community-based orientation; 3) Sanook orientation; 4) Hierarchical structure; 5) Buddhist orientation, 6) Monarchy institution respect; 7) Face and eyes in society; and 8) Form over the content. Thai PR practice has an emphasis on Saang Kwaampratabjai [impression building] through Wattana-dharm Thai. For example, historically, Thais accepted westerners because they did Saang Kwaampratabjai by bringing technology and development to the country. Thais have a positive attitude toward westerners because of this history of impression. Thai PR practitioners also try to use Saang Kwaampratabjai influence the public, such as journalists and opinion leaders by offering incentives altruistically (e.g. Namjai, Bunkhun, etc). Thai PR practice Saang Kwaampratabjai based on Buddhism and their respect of the monarchy. Thai PR place an importance on details of public’s personal information to instigate Saang Kwaampratabjai. For online PR, Thai PR use Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) to support Saang Kwaampratabjai. It would appear that ICTs, in part, are used to promote company’s image rather than having any practical use. Hence, the core of Thai PR is how to practice Saang Kwaampratabjai based solely on personal and social relationship. This thesis aims to fill in the gaps in knowledge relating to PR and culture. It will make a contribution to the academic literature on culture and public relations, not only in the West but globally. This will also provide a framework for Thai PR practitioners to improve and develop their work. This thesis examines culture and PR through the lens of Thai terminology and discourse facilitated by a native inside-out view moderated by the distance obtained by leaving my country for a substantial proportion of the period of the study. This distance allowed me to re-consider many taken-for-granted aspects of my own culture, as well as allowing me to take on board other cultural perspectives available in a Western but international university. Thus this thesis is in part autobiographical, product of my research journey that allowed me to engage with a range of fundamental issues central to cross-cultural living such as hierarchy, religion, political and regal institutional frameworks, and gender.

Thailand is a nation of some 60 million people, 2 million of whom are estimated to be HIV/AIDS infected and, of those who are infected, 80-90% were infected through heterosexual intercourse and 10-20% are women. In this research, the author discusses the situation in some detail. The experiences of HIV/AIDS infected Thai wives and widows in the rural north of the country are studied.A major contributing factor is the differential constructions of male and female status and sexuality in traditional Thai culture. These constructions are rooted in Theravada Buddhism, ancient mythology and folklore. Data was obtained from 24 participants in Chiangmai Province. The findings of the study revealed several problems with which participants were confronted and the processes they used to address them.It is suggested in the findings that any serious therapeutic interventions and interventionist research studies must be congruent with traditional Thai culture<br>Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

Thapthiang, Nuwan. "Thai celebrity culture and the Bangkok teenage audience." Thesis, University of Leicester, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/2381/7671.

Texto completo
Resumen
This study explores the media reception patterns and impact of celebrity culture on identity construction of Bangkok teenagers. The hypothesis is that audiences do not necessarily decode identical media messages in the same way as encoded. Bangkok teenagers with different ages and genders are likely to read texts regarding celebrities differently. Celebrities may not influence all teenage audiences to a significant degree and, for affected teenagers, the degree of influence may differ. Celebrities may act as good or as bad role models. This study employs a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods including (1) preliminary survey, (2) analysis of media content from quantitative and qualitative points of view, and (3) focus group discussions with different categories of Bangkok teenagers. These evolved around a selection of media items related to issues of fashion, substance abuse, and sexuality. The findings provided evidence that the meanings the young audiences derived from the celebrity coverage did not always coincide with those encoded by the media and that often alternative readings were generated alongside the preferred reading. Cultural ideologies and social environment were found to be the most significant factors impacting the text decoding. This investigation did not corroborate the popular belief that Bangkok teenagers were uncritical victims of media coverage. Data confirmed that they are critical and active media users and the extent to which their behavior is shaped by the media is relatively limited. Celebrity culture did not seem to influence Bangkok youth to an extent that can be regarded as socially harmful or culturally detrimental. On the contrary, it had certain positive effects in areas such as education, music, sports, and lifestyles. Peer groups were found to be more influential than celebrities in areas such as substance abuse and sexuality. This project makes contributions to the area of mass communication; audience reception and media effects in particular, and celebrity and youth culture studies.

Resumen
This project proposes is focus on having diversity in workforces of different cultures within theglobalized world that we live in. It is not enough to be perceived as effective in a singleorganization or by one nation. Leaders must look to understand how this can create acompetitive advantage and really should have skills that are perceived as effective by manydifferent people, despite cultural differences. The aim of this research is to have a better knowledge of how a leader can be perceived aseffective in a diverse workforce in Swedish and Thai context. And we also would like to knowthe employees’ expectation toward their future manager. To figure out the employees’ expectation, we conduct a questionnaire which was send to ourrespondents in both Thailand and Sweden. We are choosing currently workforce and futureworkforce of both countries to be our respondents. We also interview manager who have beenworked in multinational company about their experience of working in internationalenvironment.

Resumen
Abstract The morphology of 3-D rat marrow stromal cell cultures and the expression of bone-related markers were studied in a simulated microgravity environment. In addition, the differences in shear stress on the surface of microcarriers of different densities were calculated. In the experiments, secondary rat marrow stromal cells were cultured on two types of microcarriers, Cytodex-3 beads and modified bioactive glass particles, in a high aspect rotating-wall vessel (HARV). Evaluation of cellular morphology by scanning electron microscopy revealed the presence of 3-D multicellular aggregates consisting of multiple cell-covered Cytodex-3 microcarriers bridged together. Extracellular matrix and mineralization were observed in the aggregates. Using immunocytochemistry, confocal scanning microscopy, and antibodies for osteopontin and collagen type I, it was found that these bone-related proteins were strongly expressed in the 3-D cell culture. Using mathematical modeling, it was found that the shear stress at the microcarrier surface varied depending upon density difference between the culture medium and the microcarrier. At a given rotational speed and for a given culture medium, a larger density difference between the microcarrier and the culture medium (e.g., a modified bioactive glass particle) imparts a higher shear stress to the microcarrier surface. We also found variations of the maximum shear stress as a function of particle size at a given rotational speed and for a given culture medium. The numerical data may be used to optimize cell culture conditions in a simulated microgravity environment.

Resumen
Requirement of Babesia spp maintenance for experiments in various aspects is crucial. In this study, a thai strain of Babesia bovis was inoculated to splencetomized calves. During a high parasitaemia, they were bled for cryopreservaton and in vitro cultvation. Parasitized erythrocytes have been cryopreserved for future use by mixing with 3 cryoprotectants and freezing at -70℃ in liquid ntrogen. The cryoprotectants are glyccrolyte (electrolyte-based balanced), sorbitol-based and glycerol in phosphate buffered soluton (PBS). After cryopreservation for 6 weeks, viability of the parasited were assessed by morphologically observatons of Giemsa stained smears. The results revealed that glycerol-PBS cryopreserved blood were recovered unsuccessfully in bovine erythrocytes and free exoerythrocytic babesial parasites. Glycerolyte and sorbitol-based cryoprotectants gave satsfactory results. Besides, glycerolyte provided a better cryopreserved property than sorbitol-based for exoerythrocytic Babesia. The babesial parasitized erythrocytes were also maintained and propagated in in vitro cultivation for a short term. However, unsatisfactory results has been shown in both under the conditions of 85-90% humidity, 37℃ and 5% CO₂ or 2%O₂, 5%CO₂ and 93%N₂ Attempts to develop a propered culture technique should be considered.

Thunø, Mette, and Jan Ifversen. Global Leadership Teams and Cultural Diversity: Exploring how perceptions of culture influence the dynamics of global teams. Aarhus University, October 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.7146/aul.273.

Resumen
In the 21st century, business engagements are becoming increasingly global, and global teams are now an established form of organising work in multinational organisations. As a result, managing cultural diver-sity within a global team has become an essential part of ensuring motivation, creativity, innovation and efficiency in today’s business world.Global teams are typically composed of a diversity of experiences, frames of references, competencies, information and, not least, cultural backgrounds. As such, they hold a unique potential for delivering high performance in terms of innovative and creative approaches to global management tasks; however, in-stead of focusing on the potentials of cultural diversity, practitioners and studies of global teams tend to approach cultural diversity as a barrier to team success. This study explores some of the barriers that cultural diversity poses but also discusses its potential to leverage high performance in a global context. Our study highlights the importance of how team leaders and team members perceive ‘culture’ as both a concept and a social practice. We take issue with a notion of culture as a relatively fixed and homogeneous set of values, norms and attitudes shared by people of national communities; it is such a notion of culture that tends to underlie understandings that highlight the irreconcilability of cultural differences.Applying a more dynamic and context-dependent approach to culture as a meaning system that people negotiate and use to interpret the world, this study explores how global leadership teams can best reap the benefits of cultural diversity in relation to specific challenging areas of intercultural team work, such as leadership style, decision making, relationship building, strategy process, and communication styles. Based on a close textual interpretation of 31 semi-structured interviews with members of global leader-ship teams in eight Danish-owned global companies, our study identified different discourses and per-ceptions of culture and cultural diversity. For leaders of the global leadership teams (Danish/European) and other European team members, three understandings of cultural diversity in their global teams were prominent:1)Cultural diversity was not an issue2)Cultural diversity was acknowledged as mainly a liability. Diversities were expressed through adifference in national cultures and could typically be subsumed under a relatively fixed numberof invariable and distinct characteristics.3)Cultural diversity was an asset and expressions of culture had to be observed in the situationand could not simply be derived from prior understandings of cultural differences.A clear result of our study was that those leaders of global teams who drew on discourses of the Asian ‘Other’ adherred to the first two understandings of cultural diversity and preferred leadership styles that were either patriarchal or self-defined as ‘Scandinavian’. Whereas those leaders who drew on discourses of culture as dynamic and negotiated social practices adhered to the third understanding of cultural di-versity and preferred a differentiated and analytical approach to leading their teams. We also focused on the perceptions of team members with a background in the country in which the global teams were co-located. These ‘local’ team members expressed a nuanced and multifaceted perspective on their own cultural background, the national culture of the company, and their own position within the team, which enabled them to easily navigate between essentialist perceptions of culture while maintain-ing a critical stance on the existing cultural hegemonies. They recognised the value of their local knowledge and language proficiency, but, for those local members in teams with a negative or essentialist view of cultural diversity, it was difficult to obtain recognition of their cultural styles and specific, non-local competences. 3Our study suggeststhat the way global team members perceive culture, based on dominant societal dis-courses of culture, significantly affects the understandings of roles and positions in global leadership teams. We found that discourses on culture were used to explain differences and similarities between team members, which profoundly affected the social practicesand dynamics of the global team. We con-clude that only global teams with team leaders who are highly aware of the multiple perspectives at play in different contexts within the team hold the capacity to be alert to cultural diversity and to demonstrate agility in leveraging differences and similarities into inclusive and dynamic team practices.

Sangiampongsa, Pisanu. Welfare policy and social justice : policy result and attitude toward policy change. Chulalongkorn University, 2005. https://doi.org/10.58837/chula.res.2005.31.

Resumen
The extent and substance of social welfare policy have been a contentious issue. Academic discipline, culture, and values all contribute to the argument for and against it. Within the issue is also the question regarding the amplitude of government’s role in social welfare policy, which is a form of state intervention. The issue is not only philosophical, but also requires resource relocation. Since the social resource is scare, its relocation means taking some from certain individuals and giving it to others. Since the appropriate level of welfare is hard to determine, this study proposes to examine, on the global scale, the empirical effect of state’s social welfare policy on equality and social well-being as forms of social justice. Secondary data are compiled for the study. The second objective is to study a group of people’s attitude by surveying the attitude of some Thai students from middle class families or above toward social welfare policy, as politicians in a democratic society like Thailand must be responsive to citizens, especially their constituents. The finding suggests impressive result of social welfare policy on equality and social well-being, when it is compared to political, economic, and social factors. Urbanization, as a social factor, is also associated well with equality and quality of life, hence, supporting the Convergence Thesis. The survey of Thai university students shows their favorable attitude toward social welfare policy and social equality, although the type of equality that requires more extensive resource relocation receives less support. The study introduces the New Convergence Thesis from the finding and literature, while proposing two main arguments. One, the impressive result of social welfare policy still pushes the non-welfare states to conform with or converge to some features and substance of state welfare of the Western, developed countries. Two, the finding and welfare literature tend to suggest that the welfare states and non-welfare states converge to each other in the use of non-state sector, a form of privatization, in delivering welfare services. Of course, the state still assumes the role of financing or budget subsidization to the non-state sector, as well as the role of service arranger and regulator, ensuring the existence, adequacy, and quality of social welfare services.

Resumen
The authors explored the activity of mass media and cultural organizations aimed at clarification of the current problematic issue – preservation of Ukrainian cultural heritage under the conditions of the full-scale invasion of Russia into Ukraine. The authors emphasize that occupants not only destroy historic buildings, i.e. material objects, but also steal art values, destroy library and archive funds; their actions are aimed at destruction of our spirituality, identity and history. It is pointed out that there are the main streams in the work of journalists, experts, and culture figures, namely: fixation of losses, propaganda of the Ukrainian culture in the world, expert evaluation of the restitution possibilities, and filling of the culture material with patriotic sense. The full-scale invasion of Russia into Ukraine on the 24th of February 2022 led to the numerous loss of life, ruination of the military, civil and infrastructure objects. But the state-aggressor destroys and robs our culture in this war. Since the beginning of the war mass media have been actively informing about the situation in the regions, which happened to be at the line of the Russian troops attack. The information was in particular about the fact that different educational establishments, libraries and their funds, museums with valuable collections, theatres, religious buildings and historic buildings had been ruined. To tell the truth the information was incomplete due to the limited opportunities to monitor the situation. However, later it has been systematized. The work of journalists and experts contributed to this since they stated the criminal acts of Russia, informing about the ruination facts of historic, sacral, cultural monuments, devastation of many museum collections, destruction of library and archive funds. Digitalization of the Russian war crimes against Ukrainian culture became one more important work aimed at preservation of the Ukrainian cultural heritage. It was done by means of interactive maps of the Ukrainian cultural losses and it enables documenting crimes of the occupant army and spreading this information at the international level. Key words: culture, cultural front, cultural losses, cultural values, cultural heritage, war, media.

Phisalaphong, Muenduen. Development of cell carrier for improved productivity of continuous ethanol fermentation by Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Chulalongkorn University, 2010. https://doi.org/10.58837/chula.res.2010.51.

Resumen
The production of a renewable energy from biomass, such as ethanol by fermentation, has received special attention as a consequence of the world energy crisis. Nowadays, gasohol E-10, a mixture of 10% ethanol and 90% gasoline has been widely used in vehicles in Thailand and there is an attempt to promote the use of E-20 or E-85 in the vehicles in the near future. Ethanol fermentation by conventional batch suffers from various constrains such as, low cell density and rather time consuming. Although continuous fermentation by suspended cell culture can be used to speed up the process, it is more difficult to operate and maintain it free of microbial contamination. Immobilized cell technology has been suggested as an effective mean for improved fermentation. The immobilization of cells leads to a high productivity, and good operational stability. The main advantages in the use of immobilized cells in comparison with suspended cells are the retention in a reactor of higher cell concentration, protection of cells against toxic substances and elimination of costly processes of cell recovery and cell recycle. However, the major problems of using immobilization technique in industrial scale are mass transfer limitation and instability in long term operation. For improved performance of immobilized cell carriers, three new types of the cell carriers for ethanol fermentation were developed in the current study, namely, 1) Loofa reinforced alginate carriers 2) Alumina doped alginate gel carrier and 3) Thin shell silk cocoon. These cell carriers were applied for the immobilization of Saccharomyces cerevisiae M30 in ethanol fermentation using sugar cane molasses as a C-source. The developed cell carriers provided many advantage characteristics such as, good mechanical strength, high stability and high immobilization yield. The ethanol productivities of 1.3-1.5 and 8.0-19.0 g/(L h) were achieved by using the immobilized cultures in batch and continuous modes of operation, respectively. The ethanol fermentations in a continuous packed-bed reactor using the immobilized cultures worked efficiently and were stable over 30 days. The results demonstrated the potential use of the cell carriers in an ethanol fermentation system for a long period of time. In extending this work, biomaterial development and characterization for tissue engineering and membrane separation were carried out. Based on this research, we can produce 8 international research articles, 2 Thai patents, 4 international conference proceedings, 3 national conference proceedings and support research activities for 7 master degree students and 1 doctoral degree student.

Karatuna, Işıl, Sandra Jönsson, and Tuija Muhonen. Nurses’ experiences of workplace bullying: A qualitative cross-cultural study. Malmö University, January 2025. https://doi.org/10.24834/isbn.9789178776146.

Texto completo
Resumen
Background: Workplace bullying is a severe and widespread occupational problem that negatively affects individuals, organizations, and societies. Studies have shown that national culture influences the way bullying is understood and experienced across different countries. However, our understanding of the cross-cultural variations in workplace bullying is still lacking. This study aimed to compare nurses’ experiences of workplace bullying in two culturally distinct countries: Turkey and Sweden. Methods: Using a qualitative design, semi-structured interviews were conducted with nurses (21 Turkish, 16 Swedish) who identified themselves as targets and/or bystanders of workplace bullying. Data were collected during 2019/2020 and analyzed using the deductive content analysis method. Results: There were many similarities between the Turkish and Swedish nurses in their reports of the most common types, antecedents, effects of, and target responses to workplace bullying. Differences were observed between countries concerning the source of bullying and in bystander responses. Conclusion: The findings emphasize that workplace bullying is a serious problem in the nursing profession across cultures and attention should be paid to cultural factors in understanding the varying bullying-related experiences of nurses. Healthcare organizations should therefore consider developing tailor-made interventions that fit their local cultural contexts to deal with workplace bullying in a more effective way.

Dunbar, William, Suneetha M. Subramanian, and Makiko Yanagiya. Recognising and Supporting the Role of Culture in Effective Area-based Conservation. United Nations University Institute for the Advanced Study of Sustainability, December 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.53326/nrlk9587.

Resumen
Other effective area-based conservation measures (OECMs) can achieve positive biodiversity outcomes in a larger area than is covered by protected areas. But this requires OECMs to be better integrated into sustainable production systems in conjunction with protected areas. Good examples of productive social-ecological systems exist. Recognising potential OECMs requires recognising the cultures that make them possible. Recommendations: (i) fully recognise and support the role of culture in fostering interlinked human–nature relationships and nurturing biodiversity in production landscapes and seascapes; (ii) develop sustainable market mechanisms using landscape approaches that promote respect for local cultures and the rights of all stakeholders; (iii) apply good practices for empowering cultures to enhance long-term biodiversity outcomes; (iv) provide innovative incentives including capacity development to encourage local communities to manage their landscapes and seascapes for biodiversity conservation.

Resumen
This report is written by students in the Ethnic and Migration Studies Master’s Programme, part of the Research Institute in Migration, Ethnicity, and Society (REMESO) at Linköping University, based on the Norrköping campus. REMESO is an internationally renowned institute that pursues research in migration and ethnic relations. The Master’s Programme is highly sought after, with students coming from all over the world to attend. Their interest in how migration transforms the world and how it influences other social phenomena has fuelled their work in this publication. In their first year of studies, students take the course Critical Cases in Ethnic and Migration Studies, led by Erik Berggren as course coordinator and Kenna Sim-Sarka. The course is designed for students to apply the theoretical knowledge and experiences gained throughout the first year’s courses to produce articles beyond an academic audience for the broader public. Each REMS report is based around a specific theme, with previous themes including migration and Covid-19, migration and Ukraine, and migration and democracy. The REMS report is one of the many ways in which we, as students, are trained to identify and analyse issues related to migration, integration, and diversity and to make research accessible to a wider audience. This year’s overarching theme is Migration and Culture, sparked by recent developments in Sweden’s and Norrköping’s politics of decreasing and cutting funds for cultural activities. Arts and culture are both areas of expression for migrant communities and people on the move, as well as those fighting against racism, discrimination, and exclusion. The current debate on “Swedish culture” and on a “Swedish cultural canon” recalls monolithic understandings of culture as a natural and immutable construct, contributing to the polarisation of views rather than the multiplication of perspectives and conceptions of it. Like culture, which can be visualised as a tapestry created from different threads, different contributions, woven together to form something complex, this report is also a collection of varied articles, united by a common theme. Some articles in this report look at the accessibility of culture in Sweden and its transmission through all kinds of mediums, such as TV programmes; others engage artists or “social artists” who care about issues like migration and the fight against racism and discrimination, and some focus on specific aspects of culture and arts, such as language, food, and music. The first-year students of EMS, 2024.
