Resumen
This chapter tests another observable implication of the protest state theory; namely that where protest has normalized as an everyday form of political voice, political elites actively mobilize demonstrators in pursuit of their goals. In other words, rather than serving only as a spontaneous political expression of the masses, protest is often orchestrated and managed by formal political organizations. I first investigate how linkages to political organizations fuel contentious behavior in protest states like Argentina and Bolivia, but are more strongly associated with conventional participation in strongly institutionalized contexts like Chile and Uruguay. Then, utilizing a unique battery of questions from the AmericasBarometer national surveys of Argentina and Bolivia, I also test the hypothesis that clientelism can motivate protest participation in a context where protest has normalized as a standard form of political voice.

Resumen
Protests abound in contemporary political life, including in the United States: One-fifth of Americans reported having participated in a political protest between early 2016 and early 2018. Protest and Dissent examines the justification, strategy, and limits of mass demonstrations and other forms of resistance, drawing, in the distinctive NOMOS fashion, from political science, philosophy, and law. Its linked chapters are informed by African American political thought, Gandhian nonviolence, the history of the Civil Rights Movement, and the dynamics of recent social movements. In the ten chapters of Protest and Dissent, the authors challenge their fellow contributors and readers to reimagine the boundaries between civil and uncivil disagreement, between political reform and radical transformation, and between democratic ends and means. The volume has three parts. The first takes up the justification of civil and uncivil disobedience; the second addresses the strategic logic of political protest; and the third analyzes the democratic implications of protest and dissent, including in comparative perspective.

Resumen
The relationship between music and politics and specifically that between music and protest has been relatively under-researched in the social sciences in a systematic manner, even if actual experiences of music being used to express protest have been innumerable. Further, the conceptual analysis that has been thrown up from the limited work that is available focuses mostly on Euro-American experiences with protest music. However, in societies where most music is not written down or notated formally, the discussions on the distinct role that music can play as an art form, as a vehicle through which questions of artistic representation can be addressed, and the specific questions that are addressed and responded to when music is used for political purposes, have been reflected in the music itself, and not always in formal debates. It is only in using the music itself as text and a whole range of information around its creation—often, largely anecdotal and highly context dependent—that such music can be understood. Doing so across a whole range of non-Western experiences brings out the role of music in societal change quite distinctly from the Euro-American cases. Discussions are presented about the informed perceptions about what protest music is and should be across varied, yet specific experiences. It is based on the literature that has come out of the Euro-American world as well as from parts that experienced European colonialism and made the transition to post-colonial contexts in Asia, Africa, and Latin America.

Resumen
Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) affects approximately 1 person in 40 and causes great morbidity and suffering worldwide. While much about this protean disorder remains unclear, our understanding has advanced along many fronts in recent decades, and evidence-based treatments can produce benefit in a majority of sufferers. This text brings together experts in all aspects of OCD, including clinical presentation, current psychological, genetic, and neurobiological understanding of its etiology and pathophysiology, and psychotherapeutic, pharmacological, and anatomically targeted treatments. OCD-related disorders and common comorbidities and their relationship to OCD itself are also discussed, as are theoretical and sociological issues. It is hoped that this text will provide a comprehensive introduction to the field for students, scientists and clinicians. By bringing together many different perspectives on OCD, we aim to encourage cross-disciplinary understanding, research, and advances in clinical care.

Brooker, Megan E. Indivisible. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190886172.003.0009.

Texto completo
Resumen
In the wake of Donald Trump’s election to the presidency, a group of former Democratic Congressional staffers set out to organize and educate the grassroots opposition to the new administration. Indivisible began with an online guide providing an action plan of how to influence Congress. Subsequent efforts focused on ways to influence policy through conventional political channels, by stalling or defeating the Trump administration’s agenda using local, grassroots protest and advocacy tactics. Self-consciously strategic, Indivisible explicitly described its strategy as inspired by the success of the Tea Party. Like the Tea Party, Indivisible’s organizational model encouraged supporters to target members of Congress by attending town halls, making phone calls, and visiting their offices. This chapter explores how political circumstances shape the avenues of influence available to challengers and the means of contention in which they engage at any given time.

Resumen
This chapter examines the role of ritual in the contemporary context of Hawaiian indigenous communities and their disputes over rights to sacred lands. The focus of the chapter concerns Native Hawaiian challenges to the proposed Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT) project on Mauna Kea. The chapter addresses not only the more recognizably “religious” rituals performed in this context but also the rituals of political protest and legal contestation. In a challenge to Bruce Lincoln’s approach, the author reflexively analyzes his own role as both a scholar of and an advocate for these communities (a role that would seem to be condemned by Lincoln’s critical approach). Concluding, the chapter offers reflections on the stakes of advocacy for scholars of religion.

Sewell, Anna. Black Beauty. Editado por Adrienne E. Gavin. Oxford University Press, 2012. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/owc/9780199608522.001.0001.

Resumen
‘I have heard men say, that seeing is believing; but I should say that feeling is believing.’ Anna Sewell's famous ‘Autobiography of a Horse, published in 1877, is one of the bestselling novels in English. It was written not for children, but to expose and prevent cruelty to horses, and is a classic of Victorian literature that continues to captivate readers young and old. Black Beauty's moving story recounts his idyllic colthood and his experiences at the hands of a variety of owners, good and bad. Describing his life as a horse in Victorian England, he tells of his equine companions and human carers, and of the unthinking brutality to which horses were often subjected. A sympathetic hero who faces danger and excitement, Black Beauty never wavers in his principles, and the powerful lessons he teaches influenced animal welfare in England and America. This edition restores the original 1877 text and explores the multiple ways in which the novel has been read: as accessible horse-care manual, protest novel, feminist text, autobiography, slave narrative, and classic animal story.

Resumen
This chapter shows that pantomime undermines the ostensible dichotomy of art and text by engaging in visual narration. It examines the perception of dance as a superior form of rhetoric, arguing that Lucian’s On Dancing cleverly deploys traditional ideals of rhetorical versatility (Proteus and the octopus) to show that the dancer embodies them more perfectly than the orator, because his skill is physical. The dancer’s body language is situated in the context of ancient theories of gesture and physiognomy as well as in the discourse on works of art (ekphrasis), from which the motif of silent speech and the use of notions such as ēthos and pathos are adopted. Finally, the chapter examines the possible role of Hellenistic sculptural groups emphasizing motion and narrative developments in preparing the path for pantomime’s empire-wide success.

Resumen
Small-fiber neuropathy typically presents with burning pain or with widespread brief stabbing pains, by atypical presentations including asymmetric sensory symptoms are common. Nerve conduction studies are usually normal, as this disorder test only interrogates large fiber function; in small-fiber neuropathy the pathology is restricted to smaller unmyelinated fibers. Autonomic neuropathy can accompany the painful peripheral neuropathy but can be difficult to recognize since the symptoms can be protean. In this chapter, clinical characteristics of small-fiber and autonomic neuropathy are discussed. Various diagnostic modalities are described, including the benefits and pitfalls of available options. The most common conditions causing small-fiber and autonomic neuropathy are reviewed. The controversy surrounding impaired glucose tolerance as an etiological factor is dicusssed. We discuss the available medications and outline a rational approach to treatment.

Smith, Terry Ann. Warring Words in the Book of Daniel. Editado por Danna Nolan Fewell. Oxford University Press, 2015. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199967728.013.22.

Texto completo
Resumen
This chapter examines how words become the weapons of the disempowered in the book of Daniel. Given the subversive undertones of the text, the Daniel narrative wages its own form of combat, which at times, appears no less violent than the campaigns that accompany real life warfare. Like other Jewish writings of the same period, the book functions presumably as a form of protest against imperial policies and practices. Still, the book’s shifting rhetorical stance could be indicative of the writer’s altered perception of the fluctuating social conditions of his era and his group’s tenuous (political and religious) position amidst the turmoil. When understood in this fashion, the message of Daniel survives as one that not only subverts imperial authority, but one that also speaks truth to the ideological and religious authorities of its day, including those among its own constituency.

Resumen
Social networks are ubiquitous. The science of networks has shaped how researchers and society understand the spread of disease, the precursors of loneliness, the rise of protest movements, the causes of social inequality, the influence of social media, and much more. Egocentric analysis conceives of each individual, or ego, as embedded in a personal network of alters, a community partially of their creation and nearly unique to them, whose composition and structure have consequences. This volume is dedicated to understanding the history, present, and future of egocentric social network analysis. The text brings together the most important, classic articles foundational to the field with new perspectives to form a comprehensive volume ideal for courses in network analysis. The collection examines where the field of egocentric research has been, what it has uncovered, and where it is headed.

Resumen
This chapter attempts to construct a multisite ethnography of land grab by the government for private profit-making companies in Paschim (west) Medinipur district of West Bengal under the pro-peasant leftist government. The text of the article juxtaposes the direct fieldwork experiences with archival data collected from land acquisition files. The transition from a land-based rural economy toward an industrial regime was not smooth. It was characterized by protest, resistance, and bargains by the peasants as well as government and private company failures despite official claims of industrial development and employment during the transition. This micro level anthropological study also has macro implications in which the author takes up the role of a storyteller, an actor interacting with parliamentarians at New Delhi as an expert on land acquisition, and also listening to the protesting and satirical voices of the peasants affected by governmental land grab.

Resumen
Contradictory trends of depoliticisation and (re-)politicisation seem to characterise current democratic society. Protest movements and populism polarise opinions on both the streets and social media, while anonymous algorithms or scientific expertise threaten to technocratise political decision-making. At the same time, these phenomena raise the question of democratic theoretical standards of evaluation. This special volume provides a conceptual framework for the analysis and interpretation of these processes and relates previously unconnected fields of research. Theoretical perspectives and empirical findings thus form a debate on the understanding as well as the manifestations and dynamics of politics in the 21st century. With contributions by Priska Daphi, Beth Gharrity Gardner, Anna Geis, Samuel Greef, Simon Hegelich, Eva Her-schinger, Fabienne Marco, David Meiering,Michael Neuber, Orestis Papakyriakopoulos, Friedbert W. Rüb, Linda Sauer, Andreas Schäfer, Wolfgang Schroeder, Hanna Schwander, Grit Straßenberger, Jennifer Ten Elsen, Lena Ulbricht and Claudia Wiesner.
