Resumen
It was found that taking a psychology course in high school did not improve the performance of college students in an introductory psychology class on a modified version of Vaughan's (1977) misconceptions test. However, college experience did lead to a significant, but not large, improvement. A comparison of our results with those from previous studies, along with an analysis of specific test items, indicated that perhaps the test itself is misconceived.

Resumen
Along with personal interviews, individual word translation tests from the target language to the mother tongue are recognized as a reliable method of determining students’ actual lexical knowledge. However, as most English as a foreign language teachers are aware, the marking of these tests can be a laborious task. A far easier vocabulary testing format is the Yes/No (YN) checklist test, which can examine a large number of words while not over-burdening the marker. Pseudowords, which look like real words but do not bear meaning, have been added to the YN format to check for evidence of overestimation of lexical knowledge by test-takers. Four scoring formulae, which adjust YN results according to the number of pseudoword reports, have become established in the literature. Of these, the h-f formula has become recognized as the simplest to use for adjusting YN scores. This study presents a regression-based prediction formula derived from the h-f results in a pilot study, which was then applied to the YN h-f adjustments in a second study (the main study) to predict actual vocabulary knowledge as demonstrated by a meaning recall translation test of the same items. This prediction formula, labeled h-fRF, was compared with another regression-based formula as well as the original h-f formula. Results showed that 54% of the 455 individual h-fRF predictions were within 5% (4.8 of 96 words) of matching translation test scores, and 82% were within 10%, which were better than the other formula predictions. These results may be of interest to classroom teachers as they suggest that by using the h-fRF, the burden of marking translation tests can be reduced by the far easier YN test format.

Resumen
Accurate placement within levels of an ESL program is crucial for optimal teaching and learning. Commercially available tests are commonly used for placement, but their effectiveness has been found to vary. This study uses data from the Ohio Program of Intensive English (OPIE) at Ohio University to examine the value of two commercially available tests (the TOEFL ITP and the Michigan EPT) and a locally developed writing test for accurate placement decisions. Placement accuracy was measured in terms of the relationship between test scores and (1) appropriate placement levels for individual students according to their teachers, and (2) student performance in the classes. Findings support the continued use of multiple measures for more accurate placement decisions in the study context. However, the relationship between test scores and student performance, measured by students’ grades in the actual course levels and their success in advancing to a higher course level as additional indicators of the extent to which placement tests provide an accurate indication, was weak when analyzed through multiple regression and cross-tabulation, suggesting that factors other than initial proficiency are primarily determinative of student success when students have been accurately placed.

Resumen
Automated program repair is an emerging technology that seeks to automatically rectify program errors and vulnerabilities. Repair techniques are driven by a correctness criterion that is often in the form of a test suite. Such test-based repair may produce overfitting patches, where the patches produced fail on tests outside the test suite driving the repair. In this work, we present a repair method that fixes program vulnerabilities without the need for a voluminous test suite. Given a vulnerability as evidenced by an exploit, the technique extracts a constraint representing the vulnerability with the help of sanitizers. The extracted constraint serves as a proof obligation that our synthesized patch should satisfy. The proof obligation is met by propagating the extracted constraint to locations that are deemed to be “suitable” fix locations. An implementation of our approach (E xtract F ix ) on top of the KLEE symbolic execution engine shows its efficacy in fixing a wide range of vulnerabilities taken from the ManyBugs benchmark, real-world CVEs and Google’s OSS-Fuzz framework. We believe that our work presents a way forward for the overfitting problem in program repair by generalizing observable hazards/vulnerabilities (as constraint) from a single failing test or exploit.

Resumen
Patch tests were introduced as a diagnostic tool in the late nineteenth century. Since then, they have improved considerably becoming what they are today. Patch tests are used in the diagnostic investigation of contact dermatitis worldwide. Batteries or series previously studied and standardized should be used in patch testing. The methodology is simple, but it requires adequate training for the results to be correctly interpreted and used. Despite having been used for over a century, it needs improvement like all other diagnostic techniques in the medical field.
