Resumen

This thesis studies two major extensions of nominal terms. In particular, we study an extension with -abstraction over nominal unknowns and atoms, and an extension with an arguably better theory of freshness and -equivalence. Nominal terms possess two levels of variable: atoms a represent variable symbols, and unknowns X are `real' variables. As a syntax, they are designed to facilitate metaprogramming; unknowns are used to program on syntax with variable symbols. Originally, the role of nominal terms was interpreted narrowly. That is, they were seen solely as a syntax for representing partially-speci ed abstract syntax with binding. The main motivation of this thesis is to extend nominal terms so that they can be used for metaprogramming on proofs, programs, etc. and not just for metaprogramming on abstract syntax with binding. We therefore extend nominal terms in two signi cant ways: adding -abstraction over nominal unknowns and atoms| facilitating functional programing|and improving the theory of -equivalence that nominal terms possesses. Neither of the two extensions considered are trivial. The capturing substitution action of nominal unknowns implies that our notions of scope, intuited from working with syntax possessing a non-capturing substitution, such as the -calculus, is no longer applicable. As a result, notions of -abstraction and -equivalence must be carefully reconsidered. In particular, the rst research contribution of this thesis is the two-level - calculus, intuitively an intertwined pair of -calculi. As the name suggests, the two-level -calculus has two level of variable, modelled by nominal atoms and unknowns, respectively. Both levels of variable can be -abstracted, and requisite notions of -reduction are provided. The result is an expressive context-calculus. The traditional problems of handling -equivalence and the failure of commutation between instantiation and -reduction in context-calculi are handled through the use of two distinct levels of variable, swappings, and freshness side-conditions on unknowns, i.e. `nominal technology'. The second research contribution of this thesis is permissive nominal terms, an alternative form of nominal term. They retain the `nominal' rst-order avour of nominal terms (in fact, their grammars are almost identical) but forego the use of explicit freshness contexts. Instead, permissive nominal terms label unknowns with a permission sort, where permission sorts are in nite and coin nite sets of atoms. This in nite-coin nite nature means that permissive nominal terms recover two properties|we call them the `always-fresh' and `always-rename' properties that nominal terms lack. We argue that these two properties bring the theory of -equivalence on permissive nominal terms closer to `informal practice'. The reader may consider -abstraction and -equivalence so familiar as to be `solved problems'. The work embodied in this thesis stands testament to the fact that this isn't the case. Considering -abstraction and -equivalence in the context of two levels of variable poses some new and interesting problems and throws light on some deep questions related to scope and binding.

This project documents and reflects on the entire process from inception to execution of my short film, TERMS. Inspired by Yorgos Lanthimos’ The Lobster, my film falls under the genre of magical realism and explores the idea of reincarnation as a physical transformation, which acts as a vehicle through which my film’s protagonist comes to terms with her mother’s premature death. TERMS has been submitted alongside this written portion.

Nevertheless, the literature of sovereign debt that follows Eaton and Gerzovitz (1981) and Arellano (2008) has not yet adequately explored the connections between terms of trade and default incentives. We advance in this field, introducing terms of trade volatility to the model proposed by Mendoza and Yue (2012), where the sovereign debt decisions are linked to a general equilibrium model for the domestic economy. We find that an economy that faces stochastic terms of trade innovations can produce a consumption variability that highly exceeds the output variability, which is a key stylized fact of emerging markets business cycles. Our exercises also show that default episodes are driven by sudden shifts in the terms of trade but are no necessary related with bad times. No entanto, a literatura de dívida soberana baseada nos trabalhos de Eaton e Gerzovitz (1981) e Arellano (2008) ainda não explorou de forma adequada as conecções entre a dinâmica de termos de troca e incentivos ao default. Nós contribuímos nessa área, introduzindo volatilidade de Termos de Troca no modelo proposto por Mendoza e Yue (2012), no qual as decisões de dívida soberana são vinculadas à um modelo de equilíbrio geral para a economia doméstica. Nós encontramos que uma economia exposta à volatilidade dos termos de troca consegue produzir uma variabilidade do consumo que supera significativamente a variabilidade do produto, característica que constitui um fato estilizado chave de business cycles de países emergentes. Nossos exercícios também mostram que decisões de default são geradas por mudanças bruscas nos termos de troca, mas não necessariamente estão vinculados à estados ruins da economia.

Baigiamajame bakalauro darbe išanalizuoti 1077 edukologijos terminai, išrinkti iš L. Jovaišos Enciklopedinio edukologijos žodyno (2007). Jų sandara, kilmė, daryba ir kirčiavimas iki šiol plačiau nenagrinėti. Edukologijos terminai sandaros atžvilgiu suskirstyti į vienažodžius ir sudėtinius (dvižodžius, trižodžius ir keturžodžius) terminus, nustatytos jų kirčiuotės. Dauguma edukologijos terminų yra vienažodžiai terminai – 655 (60,8 proc.), sudėtinių terminų rasta 422 (39,2 proc.). Daugiau nei pusė vienažodžių edukologijos terminų yra lietuviški žodžiai – 378 (57,7 proc.). Net 592 vienažodžiai terminai (90,4 proc.) yra pirmosios ir antrosios kirčiuočių – atitinkamai 363 ir 229. Trečiosios kirčiuotės rasti 35, o ketvirtosios – 26 terminai. Lietuviški vienažodžiai pirmosios kirčiuotės edukologijos terminai dažniausiai turi priesagą -imas (60), reiškiančią veiksmų pavadinimus. Tarp antrosios kirčiuotės lietuviškų edukologijos terminų daugiausia turinčių priesagas -umas (56), kuri reiškia ypatybių pavadinimus, ir -imas (47), reiškiančią įvairius veiksmus. Iš tarptautinių pirmosios kirčiuotės vienažodžių edukologijos terminų daugiausia yra su baigmeniu -ija (74), antrosios kirčiuotės – su baigmeniu -izmas (22). Iš sudėtinių edukologijos terminų daugiausia yra dvižodžių terminų – 355 (84,1 proc.). Tarp jų vyrauja terminai su prepoziciškai prijungtais dėmenimis. The bachelor thesis analyzes 1077 terms of education which were selected from Encyclopaedic Dictionary of Education (Enciklopedinis edukologijos žodynas) by L. Jovaiša (2007). Their structure, origin, formation and accentuation have not been analyzed in detail yet. In regard to the structure, terms of education are divided into one-word and compound (consisting of two, three and four words) terms. Their accentuation classes have been determined. Most terms of education are one-word terms – 655 (60,8%), 422 (39,2%) compound terms have been found. More than a half of one-word terms of education are Lithuanian words – 378 (57,7%). 592 (90,4%) one-word terms, respectively 363 and 229 ones, are of the first and second accentuation classes. There have been found 35 terms of the third accentuation class and 26 ones – of the fourth accentuation class. Lithuanian one-word terms of education belonging to the first accentuation class often have the suffix -imas (60) which expresses the names of actions. Lithuanian terms of education belonging to the second accentuation class generally have the suffixes -umas (56) (expresses the names of characteristics) and -imas (47) (expresses various actions). International one-word terms of education belonging to the first accentuation class have the ending -ija (74), while the terms of the second accentuation class have the ending -izmas (22). This thesis examines usage of English colour terms in context, based on an extensive computerised text corpus, the Bank of English. It describes the ways in which English colour terms may be used to refer to nuances outside their normal area of designation and to attributes outside the colour domain. Usage patterns are analysed on three different levels: with regard to the overall frequency of occurrences, nominal domains and individual tokens, respectively. Cognitive linguistics supplies the theoretical framework employed in the analyses of the observed patterns. The study identifies three types of usage where colour terms refer to peripheral colour nuances or to concepts outside the colour domain: classifying, figurative and marked usage. When a colour term has a classifying function, it can be used outside the normal area of designation. This usage is analysed as a type of reference-point construction where a term referring to a salient point in the colour domain is used to subcategorise an entity whose actual colour may be only a peripheral member of the category named by the colour term. An analysis of the OED and the Bank of English shows that this type of usage is primarily restricted to a few of the most salient basic terms. This study points to the close affinities between classifying and figurative usage. Figurative expressions of colour terms frequently have a classifying function. I argue that figurative meanings are derived through two types of metonymy: +SALIENT ATTRIBUTE FOR OBJECT+ and +SALIENT CONCRETE ATTRIBUTE FOR SALIENT ABSTRACT ATTRIBUTE+. Marked usage arises when specific colour terms are used in nominal domains where the specificity is not expected. This phenomenon is consequently confined to non-basic colour terms. On the basis of the established patterns of usage and the frequency of occurrences, this thesis suggests that the colour category may be analysed as a radial category, with the basic colour terms forming the centre.

Through a comparison of the literature produced by general archival theorists with that published by photographic archivists, it becomes clear that archival principles are not routinely applied to records in photographic form. Since reflecting knowledge about records creators and circumstances of creation is a basic archival responsibility, this thesis will begin with a discussion of a variety of past and present purposes of photographers in general. The ways in which both purposes and methods can influence photographic information will also be studied. The obligation of photographic archivists to examine records and creators in terms of administrative (including legal), scholarly and other user values will then be examined. The thesis will conclude with a survey of the literature produced by North American photographic archivists to determine whether their responsibilities are fully recognized. This thesis is a comparative study of English, American, French, Canadian and Quebec law relative to the implied terms of voyage charterparties. It addresses specifically the implied terms in the general law of contract demonstrating the similarity between the Civil and Common law systems as well as the need to convert the implied terms into rules of law not subject to exclusion by agreement. The latter proposal is also supported by the doctrine of frustration which has evolved from the notion of implied terms into a principle of law. The thesis treats the implied undertakings of the shipowner which are to provide a seaworthy vessel, to go the the port of loading with reasonable despatch, to exercise reasonable care and to proceed without deviation. In addition, it studies the implied undertakings of the charterer being, essentially, the obligation to nominate a safe port and/or berth, and the undertaking not to ship dangerous goods. The thesis takes into account the impact of the transportation of goods under voyage charterparties upon the environment and suggests how this impact and its effects might be prevented by international law. Finally, it is submitted that because implied terms have been and are part of the fundamental legal structure of the voyage charterparty in both Common and Civil law, they should become express rules of international law, not subject to exclusion by contract.

This thesis concerns types systems for nominal terms, a new syntax, close to informal practice, for representing and reasoning about formal languages that use binders. Nominal techniques allow a rst-order approach to binding in formal languages, providing direct access to both binders and bound variables and a formal axiomatisation of -equivalence. This approach is promising, not least because it has been shown that unication and matching of nominal representations is both decidable and tractable, giving rise to nominal models of computation and programming languages. Nominal terms, a nominal extension of rst-order terms, are now well studied, particularly in the context of equational reasoning. However, type systems for nominal terms have not yet been extensively researched. The development of type systems for nominal terms allows the application of the nominal approach to binding to the areas of specication and verication. Programming languages and environments based upon certifying type systems facilitate formal descriptions of operational semantics and the implementation of ecient compilers. Such features are increasingly important, particularly in critical domains where mathematical certainty is a necessity, such as medicine, telecommunications, transport and defence. This work rst denes three variations on a simple type system for nominal terms in the style of Church's simply typed lambda calculus. An ML-style polymorphic type system is then studied for which a type inference algorithm is provided and implemented. This type system is then applied to equational theories. Two formulations of typed rewriting are presented, one more expressive and one more ecient. Finally, a dependent type system is given for nominal terms extended with atom substitution, with a view to developing a nominal logical framework.

Putting fractions in lowest terms is a common problem for basic algebra courses, but it is rarely discussed in abstract algebra. In a 1990 paper, D.D. Anderson, D.F. Anderson, and M. Zafrullah published a paper called Factorization in Integral Domains, which summarized the results concerning different factorization properties in domains. In it, they defined an LT domain as one where every fraction is equal to a fraction in lowest terms. That is, for any x/y in the field of fractions of D, there is some a/b with x/y=a/b and the greatest common divisor of a and b is 1. In addition, R. Gilmer included a brief exercise concerning lowest terms over a domain in his book Multiplicative Ideal Theory. In this thesis, we expand upon those definitions. First, in Chapter 2 we make a distinction between putting a fraction in lowest terms and reducing it to lowest terms. In the first case, we simply require the existence of an equal fraction which is in lowest terms, while the second requires an element which divides both the numerator and the denominator to reach lowest terms. We also define essentially unique lowest terms, which requires a fraction to have only one lowest terms representation up to unit multiples. We prove that a reduced lowest terms domain is equivalent to a weak GCD domain, and that a domain which is both a reduced lowest terms domain and a unique lowest terms domain is equivalent to a GCD domain. We also provide an example showing that not every domain is a lowest terms domain as well as an example showing that putting a fraction in lowest terms is a strictly weaker condition than reducing it to lowest terms. Next, in Chapter 3 we discuss how lowest terms in a domain interacts with the polynomial ring. We prove that if D[T] is a unique lowest terms domain, then D must be a GCD domain. We also provide an alternative approach to some of the earlier results using the group of divisibility. So far, all fractions have been representatives of the field of fractions of a domain. However, in Chapter 4 we examine fractions in other localizations of a domain. We define a necessary and sufficient condition on the multiplicatively closed set, and then examine how this relates to existing properties of multiplicatively closed sets. Finally, in Chapter 5 we briefly examine lowest terms in rings with zero divisors. Because many properties of GCDs do not hold in such rings, this proved difficult. However, we were able to prove some results from Chapter 2 in this more general case.

Resumen

This novel deals with the ‘migrant experience’ as seen through the eyes of a young Indian woman, who has, through choice and circumstance, become the displaced ‘other’ in white Anglo-Saxon Australia. The novel focuses on the construction of an identity for the migrant woman and explores the themes of loss and familial rape within tradition bound societies. In the novel, and in the essay that follows, I hope to highlight my concerns with migrant females, rape within families and within cultures and how these issues are discussed in contemporary Australia. The narrative strategy of the novel is a limited first person point of view, with occasional ‘breaks’ and forays into the minds of other characters. Written in prose, within a postcolonial framework, my novel and essay are attempts to deal with the psychological fragmentation that accompanies both physical displacement and sexual violation.

The first problem that is analysed in this thesis is the possibility of the existence of a parity-odd trace anomaly in 4d in the presence of a curved background. We show some evidence by using Feynman diagram techniques that this anomaly is present in the theory of a free chiral fermion and that it has the curious feature of having a purely imaginary coefficient in Lorentzian signature. We also analyse the theory of a free massive fermion in 3d. We compute two- and three-point functions of a gauge current and the energy-momentum tensor and, for instance, obtain the well-known result that in the IR limit we reconstruct the relevant CS action in the effective action. We then couple the model to higher spin currents and explicitly work out the spin 3 case. In the UV limit we obtain an effective action which was proposed many years ago as a possible generalization of spin 3 CS action. In the IR limit we derive a different higher spin action. This analysis can evidently be generalized to higher spins. We also discuss the conservation and properties of the correlators we obtain in the intermediate steps of our derivation.

O propósito deste estudo foi investigar o uso de termos personificadores por professores de química do ensino médio, dando ênfase ao tipo de uso - consciente ou inconsciente, à ocorrência de cada tipo - animismo e antropomorfismo (literal, metafórico e teleológico), aos motivos e contextos que acarretariam no seu uso e às concepções dos professores em relação à sua influência no processo de ensino-aprendizagem. O trabalho está estruturado em duas partes: na primeira, foram analisadas quinze encomendas de simulações computacionais elaboradas por um total de trinta e seis professores participantes do projeto LabVirt da Escola do Futuro da USP. Na segunda parte do trabalho, os termos personificadores detectados nas encomendas dessas simulações serviram de subsídio para a elaboração de um conjunto de tarefas e entrevistas (estruturada e semi-estruturada) que foram utilizadas para a análise de outro grupo de seis professores. A partir dos dados desta pesquisa, pode-se dizer que o uso de termos personificadores é uma prática comum dos professores investigados, embora isso ocorra de forma inconsciente. Esse uso aparece indistintamente entre professores com diferentes perfis acadêmicos e experiência docente. A recorrência ao uso desses termos está relacionada à abstração do conceito químico trabalhado em sala por estes professores. Eles consideram, ainda, que o uso desses termos auxilia no processo de ensino-aprendizagem de seus alunos. O antropomorfismo metafórico é o tipo mais freqüentemente utilizado. Além disso, os termos personificadores mostraram-se eficientes instrumentos de análise para inferir sobre os possíveis modelos mentais dos professores em relação a alguns conceitos químicos. Tais modelos foram revelados por meio do uso desses termos pelos professores, utilizados em seus respectivos modelos expressos. Tais resultados revelam que o uso inconsciente desses termos impossibilita uma autonomia do professor no que se refere ao controle da influência da linguagem sobre o processo de ensino-aprendizagem. The purpose of this study was to investigate the use of personifying terms by high school chemistry teachers, giving emphasis to the type of use - conscious or unconscious, to the occurrence of each type - animism and anthropomorphism (literal, metaphoric and teleological), to the reasons and contexts which entail their use and to teachers\' conceptions related to their influence on teaching and learning. The project is structured in two parts: in the first, fifteen scripts for learning objects elaborated by a group of teachers (a total of thirty six teachers) who participated in the LabVirt project from \"Escola do Futuro - USP\" were analyzed. In the second part, the personifying terms detected on these scripts were used to elaborate a set of tasks and interviews (structured and semi-structured) which were used to analyze another group of six teachers. From these results, was possible to admit that the use of personifying terms is a common practice among these investigated teachers, although it happens unconsciously. This practice appears indistinctively between teachers with different academic profiles and experience. The recurrence of these terms is related to the abstraction of the concept studied. Behind, these teachers consider that the use of these terms helps in the teaching learning process. The metaphoric anthropomorphism is the most frequent term used. Besides that, the personifying terms were efficient analysis instruments to infer about the possible mental models of the teachers. These models were revealed by the use of the personifying terms in their respective expressed models. These results point to the fact that the unconscious use of the personifying terms impedes the autonomy of the teacher in terms of the influence of language about the teaching learning process.

Resumen

This dissertation explores the main question, "What are the issues involved in the definition and translation of color terms in dictionaries?" To answer this question, I examined color term definitions in monolingual dictionaries of French and English, and color term translations in bilingual dictionaries of French paired with nine languages. From this data, I made several discoveries. First, I created a typology of strategies used to define color terms that includes three strategies: Defining with Reference to the Spectrum of Visible Light, Defining with Reference to Relationship with Other Colors, and Defining with Reference to Objects. Second, both color definitions and color translations suggest that there is a smaller difference between color words (which have non-scientific senses) and color terms (which have scientific senses) than between scientific and non-scientific senses of many other words/terms. In addition, color word translating often involves treating differences in the grammar, semantics, and division of color space between two languages. I took a closer look at the French translations of the color words brown and purple, two particularly difficult words to translate into French due to semantic restrictions. I found that, whereas the translation patterns of modern Quebec French match those of older hexagonal French dictionaries, hexagonal French dictionaries now display a different pattern. All of these discoveries lead to avenues for future research that may improve color term defining and translating.

Resumen

Project finance has become a vital financing vehicle for undertaking capital-intensive and infrastructure investments. In 2017 alone, the value of deals signed using project finance was estimated at approximately $229 billion. Despite its increasing importance, little is known regarding the impact of project-level, and country characteristics on the loan terms. This thesis proceeds in examining these determinants along three empirical essays. The first essay (Chapter 3) focuses on how domestic lead arrangers certification (in emerging markets) impact the pricing of project finance loans. Using a sample 1270 project finance loan tranches signed between 1998 and 2011, and worth over $300 billion, the chapter posits that domestic lead arrangers certification reduce search and information cost, which in turn, reduces the financing cost. The results, after controlling for endogeneity of certification decision, indicate a reduction of 47 basis points in the spread offered on PF loans. The magnitude of this reduction differs across industries, geographic region, and income classification of the project countries. The second essay (Chapter 4) examines the relationship between PF contractual structures and loan outcomes, using a sample of 5872 project finance loan tranches signed between 1998 and 2013, and worth approximately $1.2 trillion. The chapter hypothesises that (i) non financial contracts (NFCs) (that is, contracts used to manage the various project functions), reduces overall project risk, (ii) the involvement of project sponsors as key counterparties to the non-financial contracts is an additional signal of project s potential worth, and (iii) the effects observed in (i and ii) are stronger, if sponsor counterparties have verifiable credit ratings. After matching loan tranches with NFCs to those without, the results indicate that the use of NFCs reduce both the loan spreads and leverage ratios. This impact is higher if the sponsor counterparties are credit-rated. The results are also stronger for developing countries. The third essay examines the impact of country-level institutions on project finance loan spread and leverage ratio, using a sample of 3,362 loan tranches signed between the year 1998 - 2012. The chapter investigates whether political and legal institutions are substitutes (or complements), that is, if improvement in one absorbs the weakness of the other, and vice versa. Further, the essay examines if project finance network of contracts substitutes for these institutions. The results indicate that political and legal institutions are substitutes. Specifically, improvements in political institutions lead to a reduction in both the loan spread and leverage ratio for countries with weak legal and governance institutions. The chapter also finds that where NFCs are included in PF, the impact of political institutions on loan spread reduces. On the other hand, the impact of political institutions on leverage ratio is higher when NFCs are used. The findings from the three research chapters provide interesting insights on how lenders and sponsors create value through contract design.

This thesis is concerned with the study of the important effect of the gradient term in parabolic problems. More precisely, we study the global existence or nonexistence of solutions, and their asymptotic behaviour in finite or infinite time. Particularly when the power of the gradient term can increase to the power function of the solution. This thesis consists of five parts. (i) Steady-State Solutions, (ii) The Blow-up Behaviour of the Positive Solutions, (iii) Parabolic Liouville-Type Theorems and the Universal Estimates, (iv) The Global Existence of the Positive Solutions, (v) Viscous Hamilton-Jacobi Equations (VHJ). Under certain conditions on the exponents of both the function of the solution and the gradient term, the nonexistence of positive stationary solution of parabolic problems with gradient terms are proved in (i). In (ii), we extend some known blow-up results of parabolic problems with perturbation terms, which is not too strong, to problems with stronger perturbation terms. In (iii), the nonexistence of nonnegative, nontrivial bounded solutions for all negative and positive times on the whole space are showed for parabolic problems with a strong perturbation term. Moreover, we study the connections between parabolic Liouville-type theorems and local and global properties of nonnegative classical solutions to parabolic problems with gradient terms. Namely, we use a general method for derivation of universal, pointwise a priori estimates of solutions from Liouville type theorems, which unifies the results of a priori bounds, decay estimates and initial and final blow up rates. Global existence and stability, and unbounded global solutions are shown in (iv) when the perturbation term is stronger. In (v) we show that the speed of divergence of gradient blow up (GBU) of solutions of Dirichlet problem for VHJ, especially the upper GBU rate estimate in n space dimensions is the same as in one space dimension.

Includes bibliographical references (page 47). In a simple representation of a supply chain, products flow from suppliers to customers, and currency flows from customers to suppliers. The period it takes a supplier to satisfy a customer order is called lead time. The period it takes a customer to pay a supplier for product is called payment term. The question this thesis will answer is: Can payment terms be used to offset lead times? Three frameworks are developed in this thesis to quantify the payment term required to offset lead times: the Pipeline and Safety Stock Inventory Offset Framework, On Hand Inventory Offset Framework, and the On Hand Inventory and Ordering Cost Offset Framework. All three build upon the commonly used total cost equation. Empirical analysis of annual reports submitted to the United States Securities and Exchange Commission in 2019 observed a relationship between payment terms and lead times. This thesis makes two contributions to the supply chain literature. First, the total cost equation is updated to differentiate between components of lead time as well as incorporate payment terms. The main purpose of the present study is to show that scientific realism is still worth advocating despite its vulnerability in the face of anti-realist objections. For, it does not seem possible to &lsquo do science&rsquo without realist commitments. The second purpose of this study is to investigate the plausibility of the novel versions of realism in the sense that whether they can satisfactorily respond to the anti-realist objections. Regarding the main purpose, I try to show that theoretical terms are neither reducible to observables nor they can be dispensed with. Hence in scientific theories there always remains a metaphysical part. Regarding the second purpose I discuss ontic structural realism which holds the individualistic attributions responsible for the metaphysical parts in theories and suggests that non-individualistic interpretation of theoretical terms is possible. The legitimacy of Ontic structural realism&rsquo s suggestion, as its advocates claim, lies within quantum facts.

This thesis proposes a new approach to film authorship that is compatible with the postmodern theory of Linda Hutcheon. By taking up, building on, and combining the work of Peter Wollen, Michel Foucault, and Will Brooker I develop a theory of film authorship that moves away from conceptualisations of the author in terms of self-expression and instead conceives of the author as a text. Additionally, I identify four different genres of authorfunction: The Romantic, modernist, feminist, and commercial genres of author-function. These four genres of author-function provide a framework and critical vocabulary for the accurate description of the ways in which author-texts are constructed. The characteristics of these four genres of author-function are derived from the major trends in theories of film authorship identified in the review of literature. In addition to these genres of author-function, I also develop my own postmodern genre of author-function. The characteristics of this postmodern genre of author-function are derived from the analysis of existing literature on two key directors of postmodern film, David Lynch and Quentin Tarantino. In particular, the postmodern genre of author-function adapts and expands upon Peter Brooker’s and Will Brooker’s affirmative reading of the role played by generic reworking in Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction (1994). The characteristics of the postmodern genre of author-function are further refined through its application as a critical framework in two case studies focusing on Tony Scott and Sally Potter. Scott and Potter serve as contrasting case studies. In addition to operating in the very different contexts of Hollywood action cinema and art cinema respectively, Scott and Potter occupy very different positions in regards to authorship. The Scott author-text is largely constructed in terms of failed authorship. In contrast, the Potter author-text is apparently more secure in its authorial status. There are, however, a number of overlaps between the Scott and Potter case studies. Firstly, films across both the Scott and Potter oeuvres exhibit stylistic features associated with postmodern film. Despite this, Scott and Potter are not included within the central canon of postmodern cinema, and occupy a more marginal position. The Scott and Potter oeuvres are also characterised as fragmented and fractured rather than in terms of unity. This further limits the possibility of constructing Scott as an auteur and suggests that the Potter author-text is more precarious than at first appears. The thesis opens with a review of literature tracing the developments of theories of film authorship. The first chapter begins by examining the place of authorship in postmodernism as conceptualised by two key theorists of postmodernism, Fredric Jameson and Linda Hutcheon. This is followed by the development of the new approach to authorship outlined above, and its demonstration through the meta-critical analysis of existing literature on Lynch and Tarantino. This analysis also facilitates the development of the postmodern genre of author-function and provides the initial characteristics of that genre. The postmodern genre of author-function is further refined and tested through the case studies. Each of these case studies follows a similar format, beginning by situating Scott and Potter in their respective contexts. The second stage of the case studies involves determining the genres of author-function in play in the construction of the Scott and Potter author-texts. The final stage of the case study focuses on the analysis of three films by each director from the perspective of the postmodern genre of author-function in order to determine what readings are yielded by this approach, and how they compare to existing approaches. The development of a postmodern genre of author-function facilitates a revaluation of postmodern cinema. The Scott case study demonstrates one aspect of this reappraisal, the revaluation of texts previously classified as meaningless spectacle in terms of a re-inventive impulse and a critical reworking of genre conventions. The Potter case study demonstrates both the political and critical potential of such a de-constructive engagement with genre, while also showcasing the ways in which adopting the postmodern genre of author-function as a critical perspective allows for texts to be reorganised around a new centre, and for new patterns of meaning and significance to be traced across the oeuvre.

This study investigates the relationships between the use of a zoom tool, the terms they supply to describe the image, and the type of image being viewed. Participants were assigned to two groups, one with access to the tool and one without, and were asked to supply terms to describe forty images, divided into four categories: landscape, portrait, news, and cityscape. The terms provided by participants were categorized according to models proposed in earlier image studies. Findings of the study suggest that there was not a significant difference in the number of terms supplied in relation to access to the tool, but a large variety in use of the tool was demonstrated by the participants. The study shows that there are differences in the level of meaning of the terms supplied in some of the models. The type of image being viewed was related to the number of zooms and relationships between the type of image and the number of terms supplied as well as their level of meaning in the various models from previous studies exist. The results of this study provide further insight into how people think about images and how the manipulation of those images may affect the terms they assign to describe images. The inclusion of these tools in search and retrieval scenarios may affect the outcome of the process and the more collection managers know about how people interact with images will improve their ability to provide access to the growing amount of pictorial information.
