S’intéresser aux rapports que les individus entretiennent à l’égard du futur et à la façon dont ceux-ci façonnent des états émotionnels (individuels ou collectifs) est utile pour mieux comprendre ce qui motive les pratiques sociales. Cet article propose de s’intéresser aux théories de l’effondrement qui nourrissent l’imaginaire de certains protagonistes du phénomène du « retour à la terre ». Sur la base d’un travail de terrain de longue durée au sein d’une dizaine de collectifs néopaysans dans le Massif central, je mobiliserai le paradigme des temporalités multiples pour nuancer les effets des théories de l’effondrement sur le quotidien des individus. J’argumenterai que les projets visant le repli en monde rural et l’autonomie alimentaire s’inscrivent dans une temporalité présentiste paradoxale qui fait coexister des horizons temporels antinomiques, à la fois pessimistes et optimistes, vis-à-vis de l’avenir et de la lutte sociale. Le refus des acteurs d’adhérer aux grands récits linéaires et d’un mode de lutte organisé et cohérent à visée universelle me permettra ici d’alimenter les réflexions 1) sur l’action humaine dans son rapport à la crise environnementale et sociale et 2) sur des fondements épistémologiques plus généraux, relatifs à la manière d’appréhender les temporalités en sciences sociales.

RésuméEn étudiant un conflit juridique transméditerranéen autour de la succession d'un ancien ministre tunisien mort à Florence en 1887, cet article appelle à une écriture de l'histoire du Maghreb contemporain qui ne soit pas seulement conçue à partir de l’étude des sources coloniales européennes ou selon une temporalité coloniale mais qui puisse emprunter d'autres cadres d'analyse. Il s'agit aussi de prendre en compte le chevauchement des temporalités impériales française et ottomane en Méditerranée jusqu'aux années 1920, ainsi que la multiplication des litiges nés avant la colonisation de la Tunisie, des dissensions qui continuaient à fournir des raisons d'agir durant la période coloniale. Reconsidérer ces conflits non pas à l'aune de la colonisation mais selon leurs multiples temporalités et en diversifiant les sources nuancerait largement l'idée d'une absence de sources dites « locales » souvent avancée dans les études d'histoire coloniale du Maghreb. Tout autant que les parties prenantes européennes, les acteurs maghrébins impliqués dans des litiges juridiques furent à l'origine d'une profusion documentaire. Ils n'ont cessé de produire des preuves écrites et des justifications – y compris littéraires – en langue arabe pour appuyer leurs argumentaires. Les archives coloniales n'ont capté qu'une partie de ces écrits et donc des sources disponibles pour raconter une autre histoire contemporaine du Maghreb.

Lieux hybrides, multi-acteurs et impliqués dans les enjeux de leur territoire (Burret, 2015), les tiers-lieux solidaires engagent leurs publics dans des formes de cohabitation multiples (Galvão et al ., 2022), parfois d’autant plus sensibles qu’elles s’ancrent dans une gestion quotidienne de l’urgence sociale auprès de publics en situation de vulnérabilité. Les configurations sociales des tiers lieux s’articulent avec des configurations spatiales également atypiques, en témoigne l’engouement pour les projets d’urbanisme transitoire. Cet article explore la manière dont deux actants non-humains parlent et agissent dans le cadre de ces projets, à savoir le bâtiment et le temps. Le bâtiment y sera vu comme investi d’une mission de ventriloquie (Cooren, 2010a, 2010b) pour accueillir les visiteurs et impulser l’appropriation du lieu et de sa vie collective. Le temps, quant à lui, sera abordé par le caractère chronotopique des tiers-lieux solidaires. Caractéristique singulière des projets d’urbanisme transitoire, le croisement de temporalités multiples sera montré comme source de fragilités, mais aussi d’opportunité de création de nouveaux espaces de rencontres et de dialogue.

L’ouvrage collectif L’urbain par l’image, collaborations entre arts visuels et sciences sociales (Creaphis, mars 2020) ouvre la boite noire des pratiques de collaboration entre artistes, chercheuses et chercheurs. Il déplie leurs arrangements matériels, leurs temporalités, leurs objets, leurs techniques, leurs références et catégories. Sa maquette, délibérément expérimentale, a été réalisée avec un éditeur particulièrement attentif aux spécificités de chaque projet et à leur dimension visuelle. Nous revenons ici sur la fabrique de cet objet éditorial. Les choix esthétiques et de médiation qu’il active offrent une entrée privilégiée pour questionner les transformations du statut de l’image dans la recherche urbaine. Dans cet espace de pratiques, l’analyse des multiples articulations d’un travail collaboratif contextualisé permet de réinterroger les potentialités de l’image et ses actualisations.

Resumen

Cet article propose de communiquer sur un retour d’expérience et d’engager une réflexion sur la réalisation d’une recherche critique en sciences humaines financée par son terrain de recherche. L’ambition est ainsi d’adopter un double point de vue : celui de l’universitaire et du professionnel. Cette posture n’étant pas sans inconvénient puisqu’elle implique de se poser la question à la fois des attentes et des besoins du monde professionnel et scientifique dans le cadre de ce qui relève de la recherche-action. Être engagé par son terrain, c’est se confronter à la contradiction des temporalités et de multiples intérêts. Nous verrons que l’élaboration de l’objet de recherche, l’obtention des données et les modalités de restitution, interpelle la nécessité d’adopter un point de vue réflexif et pour le chercheur de transformer les contraintes en opportunités.

L’article propose d’interroger la thématique de « l’enseignement explicite » depuis la géographie scolaire du secondaire. Dans un contexte où les injonctions à l’explicitation sont de plus en plus pressantes – mais aux contours flous, voire contradictoires – des observations menées auprès de professeurs de collège et de lycées montrent comment ils y font face. Une analyse des pratiques enseignantes à partir des finalités éducatives du monde en géographie (le but), des savoirs dispensés (les connaissances) et des procédés d’étude et de pensée (les méthodes), nous permet de distinguer deux explicitations de nature différente. La première, par définition, amène à déterminer par une formulation précise, par le professeur, des caractéristiques d’un concept, d’une démarche ou de la finalité de la discipline. La seconde, par délimitation des situations, consiste à s’appuyer sur des habitudes de travail pour amener les élèves à s’expliciter à eux-mêmes les savoirs, les méthodes et les finalités de la discipline. Ces pratiques mettent en évidence un processus d’explicitation aux formes non nécessairement contradictoires et aux temporalités multiples.

L'œuvre de l'architecte Alberto Ponis s'inscrit à un moment charnière (1960 - 1980) durant lequel l'architecture dite vernaculaire devient une source d'inspiration pour de nombreux architectes. Son œuvre est riche d'un ensemble de 300 maisons. Ponis invente ainsi une nouvelle culture architecturale en développant une démarche ethnographique, les données qu'il récolte deviennent la source d'inspiration pour ses projets. Il semble ainsi engager une décélération contraire à la pratique qu'il menait jusque-là en confirmant le constat que la modernité engendre une crise de notre expérience du temps : La temporalité linéaire, vectorielle, homogène et continue se découvre parfois cyclique, répétitive, hétérogène et discontinue.Les projets de Ponis sont constitués d'idées héritées, chacun étant un montage de références. Son modus operandi révèle des influences venant de contextes et époques variés. Les maisons qu'il conçoit sont des agencements de temporalités multiples (temps cosmologique, géologique, biologique, historique, social, vécu, etc…) produisant un tout signifiant. Nous proposons de faire le récit de cet agencement avec quelques maisons que nous interprétons comme diverses figures de temporalités multiples : figure évolutionniste, figure des survivances ou figure géologique. L'objectif de cette thèse est de mieux comprendre et faire le récit de l'agencement des temporalités multiples à l'œuvre dans certaines réalisations de l'architecte Alberto Ponis.Nous retenons pour notre étude quatre maisons que nous avons sélectionnées suivant des critères spécifiques : position charnière dans la chronologie de son œuvre, réception par la critique architecturale, diffusions récentes, disponibilité des matériaux d'étude, etc… Pour opérer ces études, nous employons différents instruments d'analyse critique que nous empruntons à d'autres disciplines telles que l'histoire de l'art ou l'histoire littéraire. Enfin, le travail de terrain fait partie intégrante de notre démarche d'enquête. Plusieurs séjours en Sardaigne à la rencontre d'Alberto Ponis, de ses archives et de ces maisons sont nécessaires.Concevant une architecture toujours plus fusionnelle avec le site, son imaginaire s'inscrit dans le temps long et devient « géologique » (Ponis 2023). Par ce décentrement vers la géologie (Gaillardet 2023), vers cette attention aux choses (Verbeek 2005), il propose une nouvelle manière d'habiter le pays et le temps sarde. Ponis composerait ainsi des « temps-paysages » (Bensaude-Vincent 2021), c'est-à-dire qu'il replongerait les actions humaines dans les cycles multiples qui régissent l'histoire de la Terre. Aussi, cette étude témoigne que la manipulation des temporalités par les architectes passe par une mise en récit du monde dans lequel ils construisent, permettant par la médiation de la temporalité narrative la figuration du développement de l'expérience qui semble disparaitre (Ricoeur 1983 ; Hamel 2006).Cette attention « au paysage construit sans précédent culturel » (Smith 1966) semble être l'une des préoccupations majeures de Ponis depuis les années 1970. Il procède à un examen sensible des précédents géologiques pour concevoir ses projets. La narration qu'il produit avec ses constructions et qu'il dispense depuis dans différents entretiens, répond à la nécessité de la mise en récit de l'activité humaine pour vivre l'expérience du temps.Une analyse critique de la réception récente des travaux de Ponis et de son discours complète notre recherche. L'intérêt pour son œuvre éclaire a fortiori nos préoccupations face aux temps de crises (Serres 2009) et les nouvelles limites de la pratique architecturale
The work of architect Alberto Ponis dates back to a period (1960-1980) when vernacular architecture became a source of inspiration for many architects. His work includes a collection of 300 houses. Ponis pioneered a new architectural culture by developing an ethnographic approach, and the data he collected became the source of inspiration for his projects. In this way, he seems to be undertaking a deceleration that runs counter to his previous practice, confirming the observation that modernity is generating a crisis in our experience of time: the linear, vectorial, homogeneous and continuous temporality is sometimes found to be cyclical, repetitive, heterogeneous and discontinuous.Ponis's projects are made up of inherited ideas, each one a montage of references. His modus operandi reveals influences from a variety of contexts and periods. The houses he designs are arrangements of multiple temporalities (cosmological, geological, biological, historical, social, lived experience, etc.) producing a meaningful whole. We propose to narrate the story of this arrangement with a few houses that we interpret as various figures of multiple temporalities: the evolutionism figure, the survival figure or the geological figure. The aim of this thesis is to gain a better understanding of the multiple temporalities at work in some of the buildings designed by the architect Alberto Ponis.We have selected four houses for study based on to specific criteria: their pivotal position in the chronology of his work, their reception by architectural critics, their recent distribution, the availability of study materials, etc. To carry out these studies, we are employing various instruments of critical analysis borrowed from other disciplines such as art history or literary history. Finally, fieldwork is an integral part of our investigative approach. Several trips to Sardinia to meet Alberto Ponis, to explore his archives and these houses were necessary.By designing an architecture that is increasingly fused with the site, his imagination takes a long-term view and becomes “geological” (Ponis 2023). Through this decentring towards geology (Gaillardet 2023), towards this attention to things (Verbeek 2005), he proposes a new way of inhabiting the country and Sardinian time. Ponis thus composes “landscape-time” (Bensaude-Vincent 2021), in other words, he immerses human actions in the multiple cycles that govern the history of the Earth. This study also shows that the manipulation of temporalities by architects involves putting the world in which they are building into a narrative, making it possible, through the mediation of narrative temporality, to depict the development of experience that seems to be disappearing (Ricoeur 1983; Hamel 2006).This attention to “the built landscape without cultural precedent” (Smith 1966) seems to have been one of Ponis's major preoccupations since the 1970s. He makes a sensitive examination of geological precedents when designing his projects. The narrative that he produces with his constructions, and which he has since shared in various interviews, responds to the need to put human activity into a narrative in order to experience time.A critical analysis of the recent reception of Ponis's work and his discourse concludes our research. Our interest in his work sheds light on our concerns in times of crisis (Serres 2009) and the new limits of architectural practice

This paper critically examines how low-paid workers, who need to work in more than one legitimate job to make ends meet, attempt to reconcile work and life. The concept of work-life articulation is utilised to investigate the experiences, strategies and practicalities of combining multiple employment with domestic and care duties. Based on detailed qualitative research, the findings reveal workers with 2, 3, 4, 5 and even 7 different jobs due to low-pay, limited working hours and employment instability. The study highlights the increasing variability of working hours, together with the dual fragmentation of working time and employment. It identifies unique dimensions of work extensification, as these workers have an amalgamation of jobs dispersed across fragmented, expansive and complex temporalities and spatialities. This research makes explicit the interconnected economic and temporal challenges of low-pay, insufficient hours and precarious employment, which creates significant challenges of juggling multiple jobs with familial responsibilities.

This paper argues for the need to reconsider the changing nature of in-work poverty (IWP). In doing so, we present evidence not included in current debates or statistics, of people working in more than one job, yet still experiencing IWP. Using the dynamic theory of poverty and a qualitative approach, we identify various structural constraints that sustain cycles of IWP. This highlights the multi-dimensionalities of poverty, incorporating the temporalities, types and depths of IWP. Our evidence demonstrates how poverty is experienced and individualised and also how it is created and sustained through paid work, rather than being challenged by it.

Chapter 3 articulates how constitutive exclusion both grounds and troubles borders and foundations, acting as the simultaneous condition of possibility and impossibility for the body whose border it draws. I investigate this quasi-transcendental character through an analysis of Derrida’s reading of Hegel in Glas, and in his 1971–1972 course, “La famille de Hegel.” Derrida argues that the speculative dialectic of the Logic is distinguished from the empirical differences of nature through an account of gender produced as “natural” but which secures the gender of language and power. Relying on Derrida’s analysis of Antigone/Antigone, I flesh out the economy and retroactive temporality of constitutive exclusion. I give an account of transcendental as a performative role, and argue that retroactive temporality, in combination with the multiplicity diagnosed in Chapter 2, indicates that political bodies and agency are secured through a sedimented history of multiple constitutive exclusions.

Judgments about causality are central to the development of interventions intended to reduce exposure to risk factors that cause cancer. Because causation is not directly observable in medicine, scientists and philosophers have had to develop sets of constructs and heuristics that define “cause” operationally. The criteria in this framework, often attributed to the British medical statistician Sir Austin Bradford Hill or to the 1964 Report of the US Surgeon General on tobacco, include consistency, strength of association, specificity, temporality, coherence/plausibility/analogy, biological gradient, and experiment. This chapter reviews these criteria in depth and considers the challenges of applying them to population research on cancer. It discusses the concepts of causation in the context of the multistage nature of cancer, the “counterfactual” notion of causation, the component cause model for understanding diseases with multiple causes, and the “weight of the evidence” approach for integrating information from multiple lines of research.

AbstractThis article provides a reading of archaeological traces in Beowulf that shows how the epic deals with and makes use of the notion of an always-already absent presence not in the singular, but in the plural. Through negotiating the notion of the trace, the epic produces a palimpsestic interplay between various levels and layers of absence-cum-presence—layers of temporality that are imagined, however, in very material terms. This layered, archaeological idea of temporality contributes to generating a complex notion of history. In particular, this article is interested in the ways in which, within the poem, the networks of traces associated with a given object may, in fact, help to constitute a specific concept of the historical event. In Beowulf, this essay argues, a historical event is characterized as such through the particular density and complexity of the entangled traces that mark it in a manner that resembles what Carolyn Dinshaw has called ‘multiple temporalities’. The epic thus conceives of an event in terms of a node that binds together a multiplicity of traces, and hence, a multiplicity of entangled temporalities.

The article departs from the diagnosis of post-Yugoslav contemporary accounts of Yugoslav and partisan events. The critique of nationalist and Yugonostalgic discourses discloses shared assumptions that are based on the ‘romantic’ temporality of Nation and on history as a closed process. In the main part of the article the author works on the special, multiple temporality of partisan poetry that emerged during the WWII partisan struggle. The special temporality hinges on the productive and tensed relationship between the ‘not yet existing’ — the position of the new society free of foreign occupation, but also in a radically transformed society — and the contemporary struggle within war, which is also marked by the fear that the rupture of the struggle might not be remembered rightly, if at all. The memory of the present struggle remains to be the task to be realized not only for poets, but for everyone participating in the struggle. This is where the revolutionary temporality of the unfinished process comes to its fore, relating poetry to struggle, but again producing a form of poetry in the struggle.

This chapter analyses forms and functions of cultural transfer in Robert Louis Stevenson’s Pacific travel writings with a particular focus on the temporalities of cultural exchanges. It examines the multiple timeframes of cultural transfer so as to open up a perspective on Stevenson’s works as negotiating not only the ambiguities of geographical but also of time-based contact zones, where past, present and future meet. Such an exploration adds a temporal perspective to Mary Louis Pratt’s term of the ‘contact zone’ insofar as it suggests that asymmetrical relationships cannot only arise out of intercultural geographical spaces but can also result from inner-cultural encounters with different periods and times. Ghost imagery and the narration of loss are part of the aesthetic repertoire Stevenson uses in his work to mediate the temporalities of cultural contact zones. Together with other forms of cultural transfer, such as linguistic translation, the construal of the traveller-narrator as intermediary figure and anthropological depictions of Pacific cultures, ghost images and tropes of loss illustrate the complex chronotopical entanglements of cultural encounters that Stevenson negotiates in his Pacific writings. Stevenson’s A Footnote to History (1892) and In the South Seas (1896) offer rich resources for understanding the temporal complexities of cultural transfer because, during his time in the Pacific, Stevenson was deeply occupied with the multiple temporalities of cultures and cultural contact zones.

AbstractTurkey has a highly complex structure with stratified legal statuses and multiple actors in migration and refugee governance. The chapter shows how temporality is the key encompassing characteristic of Turkey’s refugee governance, which is the basis for its response to Syrian mass migration and multilevel refugee governance. In this regard, the chapter asks how strategic temporality is used as a tool for international protection in Turkey and what the consequences are in terms of the legal, political and institutional frameworks at the macro level, as well as perceptions, experiences, and strategies of policy implementers and policy beneficiaries at both meso and micro levels.

AbstractThis chapter presents the methodological process built during my doctoral research about the expectations on graduate education and the consequent professional and community journeys of a group of indigenous women from Mexico. In this text, are explored the encounters with two women with masters degrees—a Zapotec from Oaxaca and a Maya from Yucatan—as an exercise to reflect on how to generate knowledge that considers multiple standpoints, that is collaborative, anti-oppressive, caring and follows a constant self-reflectivity. The text is also an exercise for a narrative that shows and shapes a methodological path throug time, exposing temporalities and contexts that are not fixed yet connected.

AbstractIn this conclusion, we revisit some of the key findings of this book’s analytical/interpretative cuts into the online circulation of museum collections. The pedagogical challenges museums face when collection knowledge is appropriated by groups whose political aims threaten social solidarity and democratic values are discussed. Highlighted are the ways in which collection knowledge is both customised and open-ended when digitisations, narratives and research findings flow between multiple platforms and are transmitted through interfaces including home feeds or lists. We conclude that curatorial agency simultaneously becomes humanist and subjective; machinic and computational; and imbricated in more-than-human ontological formations that insert digitisations and museum knowledge in multi-scalar geographies and temporalities extending from deep geological time into unforeseen futures.

Existe Définie comme un des droits fondamentaux de tout être humain, la santé, pour l’OMS, est un état de complet bien-être physique, mental et social et ne consiste donc pas seulement en une absence de maladie ou d'infirmité. Cette redéfinition ambitieuse multiplie, on le voit, les sources de mal-être et autant de nécessaires transitions, à examiner, pour atteindre et maintenir sur toutes ces dimensions un bien-être total. On envisagera dans cette perspective certains modes de transition emblématiques entre ces deux états : ainsi la guérison – sans transition - miraculeuse et instantanée, la guérison comme processus complexe impliquant une gradation des étapes soumises à la véridiction, voire une inscription, avec la maladie, dans la chronicité. Ainsi l’actuelle épidémie pose le problème d’un allongement duratif et inédit des symptômes, dans le cas du « Covid long » : transition interminable vers l’état de santé et dénonçant une illusoire guérison. Mais l’examen, si minutieux soit-il, de la temporalité transitionnelle ne saurait éluder la question des actants, multiples, convergents ou non, du changement, intimement liés à l’économie même des types de transition.

The European Union stands apart through its ambitious blueprint to reach carbon neutrality by 2050. Playing a pivotal role within this process, the energy transition in EU is challenged by the trilemma of supply security, competitiveness and sustainability. Historical contingencies and contextual factors trigger different evolutionary trajectories in terms of temporalities and geographies. Testing the club convergence hypothesis, studies addressed the heterogeneity of EU member states either from energy or environmental perspectives. Our study relying on two streams of research on club convergence and core-periphery model is set to provide: (1) an up-to-date assessment of energy transition pathways pursued by EU members; and (2) a comprehensive outlook based on multiple variables to capture the economic, environmental, energy, social and policy dimensions of energy transition. We employ time-series data issued by EUROSTAT at the level of EU-27 national economies from 2015 (Climate Paris Agreement) to 2021 (European Green Deal). The analysis is based on the measurement of absolute, conditional and relative convergence to test the assumption that EU member states are organized into convergence clubs along core-periphery patterns. Absolute and conditional beta convergence, as well as sigma convergence have been confirmed by data, and five convergence clubs have been identified. However, their membership does not confirm the core-periphery theory in its classical tenets; it rather reflects multiple energy transition paths. We intent to contribute to the scholarship on climate and energy aiming to endorse informed policy across EU.

Tumbleweed Rodeo is a multi-sensory, multi-species approach to understanding temporality, migration, and the arbitrary nature of borders by tracing the vectors of tumble¬weeds’ movement from where they’re from–the Caucus Region–to where they’ve ended up: America. Despite its ubiquity in and synonymity with the American Southwest, the plant has mostly evaded critical inquiry; while much literature exists in the fields of agriculture, botany, and environmental science, there is little in cultural anthropology and none in architecture, save one essay on the plant’s formal proper¬ties. It’s precisely because of this–the lack of scholarly work and recognizable expertise–that makes the tumbleweed an exceptional resource for helping students and faculty to shape their education, work across multiple sites to train their imagination, and ask questions outside their frame. Over the last three years, architecture students from across the Great Plains have engaged collaborators in America and Caucasia to tag, track, draw, and build with tumbleweeds because they defy humanmade borders and ask new ques¬tions of indigeneity and invasiveness. This paper covers three examples of architectural studios that work with the plant: the first comprises two month-long participatory performances in Lubbock, Texas, and Chicago, Illinois, respectively; the second centers on reimagining architectural tools to produce new forms of human and non-human extra-thick mappings between New Mexico and Tbilisi, Georgia; and the third docu¬ments the planning efforts of students in Colorado who will execute five design-build events in a borderland region with an overlay of different cultures.
