Resumen
This paper discusses the problems of designing cloud-based telecommunication network monitoring systems based on the construction and application of models of such networks in the form of knowledge graphs. The proposed monitor-ing systems combine the functions of systems used by various telecommunications network operators. The considered design approach involves the use of a number of common ontologies and domain-level ontologies, such as the tele-communications services domain ontology (TSDO) and the hybrid telecommunications network (ToCo) ontology. To take into account the specifics of networks and operators in the developed monitoring system, an extension of the do-main ontology is provided. The article considers the case of combining telecommunication networks built on the basis of different domain-level ontologies or without using an ontological model, by adding new ontologies, within the framework of one monitoring system. To automate the design process, an algorithm for comparing classes of domain ontologies with components of telecommunication network models is proposed. The application of the proposed ap-proach is shown on the example of the problem of adding a new network segment to the monitoring system of a cable television operator.

Resumen
The presence of more electronics onboard vehicle systems transforms them from simple means of transportation to powerful telecommunication devices, capable of receiving and transmitting information in various ways, analyzing the obtained information and performing various actions on the basis of the received data, starting from managing the work of individual transport units up to self-driving motion. The available techniques of auto-technical expertise are not able to answer all the questions that may be raised in criminal and administrative cases, as well as in the consideration of civil claims for damages’ compensation and damages in road accidents involving modern vehicles. The analysis of forensic practice allows to specify directions of increasing the efficiency of research on establishing the circumstances of road accidents: improvement of the methods for carrying out forensic auto-technical expertise, improvement of qualification and professional skills of forensic motor technician’s experts, carrying out of complex telecommunication and auto-technical expertise. The main task of an expert in the field of telecommunications during the conduction of complex telecommunication and auto-technical expertise is to extract the necessary information from certain telecommunication devices installed in the vehicle, which is under study, to determine the methods for their installation and connection and communication channels. The introduction of modern technologies for diagnosing electronic systems of vehicles into modern practice is a prerequisite for improving the efficiency of forensic auto-technical expertise, and the most effective use of these technologies is achieved by engaging in research in the format of carrying out complex telecommunication and auto-technical expert examinations in the field of telecommunications.

Jarmoszko, Andrzej Tomasz. "Transformation of the telecommunication environment in Poland, 1989-1991". Diss., The University of Arizona, 1992. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/186028.

Texto completo
Resumen
In the two years 1989-1991 the environment of Poland's telecommunications was fundamentally transformed. This dissertation is an exploratory case study addressing four principal aspects of that country's changing telecommunications: (1) telecommunication regime or the structure of rules in which telecommunication systems function; (2) telecommunication services, defined as the means and methods of communicating from a distance by processing and relaying an electro-magnetic signal (categorized into telephone, mobile, data-messaging, information, data-carrier, and entertainment); (3) telecommunication equipment, or markets for switching, transmission and terminal equipment; and (4) telecommunication subscribers, or principal characteristics of the customer-base in the residential, professional, rural and urban market segments. Each aspect is examined for the purpose of capturing the on-going change. The dissertation identifies the principal agents of change and maps the new conditions onto the models developed by Cowhey and Aronson. Institutional pluralism, market competition, shortage alleviation and market restructuring have transformed Poland's telecommunication environment from the scarcity model to a version of the boutique model.

Resumen
In this thesis, a novel protocol stack architecture is presented. The Future Core Networks System (FCNS) forms a secure reference model for use in packet-switched structures, with its applicability ranging from computer to telecommunication networks. An insight on currently used network protocol systems is given, analysing standardised sets of communication rules with respect to the security they afford to the messages exchanged. The lack of protection schemes for the internal protocol stack messages and the implementation pitfalls of their security architectures are described, in relation to the effects they have on the communication process. The OSI security model is also considered, with disadvantages identified in the placement of security functionality and its management. The drawbacks depicted for currently used systems form the motivation behind this work. The analysis of the FCNS follows, which is composed of three parts. In the first part, the FCNS communication layers are examined, with respect to the mechanisms used to establish, maintain and tear down a connection between peer entities. In the second part, the security mechanisms of the proposed reference architecture are given, including details on the FCNS keystream generator used for the security of the internal FCNS messages. Finally, the FCNS Error Protocol is depicted, illustrating the modes of operation and advantages it exhibits over currently used systems. The work then moves into presenting details of the software FCNS implementation, followed by the presentation of the results and measurements obtained by the case studies created. Comparisons are given in relation to the TCP/IP suite, to provide the means of identifying the FCNS applicability in various network environments. The work is concluded by presenting the FCNS functionality in delivering information for the UMTS, together with further work that may enhance the flexibility and use of the proposed architecture.

Resumen
The objective of this research is to design, and determine the feasibility of, a telecommunication system for the city of Erdenet, Mongolia. The Mongolian Telecommunication Company, Telecommunication Company of Erdenet city, and the National Statistical Office of Mongolia provided the data required for telecommunication forecasting of Erdenet. The literature review and analysis of the telecommunication forecasting indicate the need for a model of a new Telecommunication system in Erdenet, Mongolia. The model, as indicated, should become a useful example for planning and updating the telecommunication system in Mongolia. The design of a proposed telecommunication network involves the following considerations: analyzing and forecasting telephone traffic, calculating the required number of channels, determining exchange locations, traffic matrix, and establishing a basic hierarchical structure.

Resumen
Infrastructure systems are essential to the functioning of contemporary societies and economies. A major disruption to the built environment can lead to severe public safety issues and economic losses. Within the past few decades, modern control and information technologies have been rapidly developed in an attempt to improve the reliability of individual utility systems by exchanging technologies across them. One of the major ramifications is the emergence of interdependencies among these critical infrastructure systems, especially when facing major disruptions. Failure of an individual system becomes more likely to affect the functionality of other interconnected infrastructure systems. In order to mitigate such consequences, the mechanics of interdependencies and failure propagation among the systems must be understood. This research focuses on the development of a framework for probabilistically quantifying interdependent responses of two essential infrastructure systems - telecommunication and electric power systems - subjected to seismic hazards, which are one of the most powerful and geographically extensive threats. The study explores the effects of seismic hazards beyond the obvious seismic-induced physical damage to utility system facilities. In particular, the seismic evaluation of telecommunication systems considers the degradation of system performance due to physical damage and the abnormally high usage demands in telecommunication systems expected after catastrophic earthquakes. Specifically, a newly developed seismic-induced congestion model is proposed, and the probabilistic formulations of the critical interdependencies across telecommunication and power systems are presented in a probabilistic framework. The study illustrates the procedure for fragility analysis of interdependent systems and presents a practical application through a test bed implementation in Shelby County, TN. From this study, telecommunication systems are found to be very vulnerable to seismic-induced congestion. The electric power interdependencies amplify the degradation in telecommunication systems up to 50% in their vulnerability while electric power operations are heavily dependent upon telecommunication infrastructures and the fragility median of electric power system observability can decrease by 30%. The study also indicates up to 100% overestimation of the independent fragility analysis and the results reveal the relationship between system topology and the sensitivity of system performance to the intensity of interdependencies. The proposed methodology is expected to be a valuable tool for decision making in evaluating seismic mitigation strategies and also to provide the foundation for future studies on interdependent responses of other critical infrastructures.

Texto completo
Resumen
This thesis describes work on a variety of novel fibre-based, all-optical approaches to the implementation of several key telecommunications operations. It can be divided into two distinct parts. The first part relates to the generation and coherent manipulation of short pulses in all-fibre systems. The development of an actively and harmonically mode-locked polarisation-maintaining erbium fibre ring laser operating at a repetition rate of 10GHz is first presented. Long-term stable operation is ensured by the use of an optical phase lock loop to maintain resonant operating conditions. The ring laser incorporated a long length of dispersion-shifted fibre that enhanced soliton compression of the generated pulses, and a filter to allow for tuneable operation within the erbium gain bandwidth. The output was in the form of 2 - 4ps nearly transform-limited solitons, the width of which depended on pump power. A series of characterisation measurements on this laser is presented. These include autocorrelation and optical spectrum measurements of the pulses, frequency resolved optical gating (FROG) characterisation, an interpulse noise measurement, jitter measurements using the RF spectrum of the pulses, and bit error-rate measurements. A technique that uses superstructured fibre Bragg gratings for passively manipulating short pulses in a coherent manner is presented. The technique relies on filtering in both amplitude and phase the (broad) spectrum of the input pulses, thereby producing pulses of a desired spectral, and hence temporal response. The pulses generated from the erbium fibre ring laser were used in a series of experiments that demonstrated this technique. A basic pulse encoding and decoding scheme, pulse shaping of soliton pulses into square pulses, and repetition rate multiplication from 10 to 40GHz are presented. The second part of the thesis concerns a detailed characterisation of the recently discovered optical nonlinearities associated with the reflectivity of a gallium:glass interface. It is demonstrated that such mirrors can be formed at the tip of a cleaved fibre. The reflectivity of these mirrors is shown to change at the erbium wavelengths by 30% under suitable temperature and optical excitation. An assessment of the dependence of the magnitude, dynamics and optical phase response of the nonlinearity on temperature and pump power is carried out. The reproducibility of the nonlinear effect was also examined. Gallium mirrors were then used to passively Q-switch a variety of fibre lasers. Due to their broadband nature, Q-switching of lasers of significantly different lasing wavelengths was achieved (1064 and 1550nm). Pulse energies up to 10 µJ were obtained. This performance is directly comparable to that achieved using state-of-the-art (wavelength-selective) saturable absorbers.

Resumen
Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is widely used in the telecommunication industry to validate experimental data and obtain both qualitative and quantitative results during product development. A typical outdoor telecommunications cabinet requires the modeling of a large number of components in order to perform the required air flow and thermal design. Among these components, the heat exchanger is the most critical to thermal performance. The cabinet heat exchanger and other thermal components make up a complex thermal system. This thermal system must be characterized and optimized in a short time frame to support time-to-market requirements. CFD techniques allow for completing system thermal optimization long before product test data can be available. However, the computational model of the complex thermal system leads to a large mesh count and corresponding lengthy computational times. The objective of this paper is to present an overview of techniques to minimize the computational time for complex designs such as a heat exchanger used in telecommunication cabinets. The discussion herein presents the concepts which lead to developing a compact model of the heat exchanger, reducing the mesh count and thereby the computation time, without compromising the acceptability of the results. The model can be further simplified by identifying the components significantly affecting the physics of the problem and eliminating components that will not adversely affect either the fluid mechanics or heat transfer. This will further reduce the mesh density. Compact modeling, selective meshing, and replacing sub-components with simplified equivalent models all help reduce the overall model size. The model thus developed is compared to a benchmark case without the compact model. Given that the validity of compact models is not generalized, it is expected that this methodology can address this particular class of problems in telecommunications systems. The CFD code FLOTHERM™ by Flomerics is used to carry out the analysis.

Resumen
The recent progresses in mobile telecommunications technologies have allowed railway telecommunications technology to go a step forward, and, in the same way, the railway control systems. In this sense, while the mobile telecommunications technology evolved from the first generation of analogue mobile communication systems to what is known today as B3G (Beyond 3G), the same occurred with the telecommunication systems used in railways, from those based on analogue telecommunications, to the most recent ones based on 2G such as GSM-R or TETRA. Till recently, there was a technological gap regarding high mobility environments, high transmission rate and high interactivity (low latency). However, new emerging telecommunications technologies have shortened this gap significantly. This way, the train control systems will be affected by the availability of telecommunications technologies capable of offering earth-train broadband communications in real time. This article presents a telecommunications network architecture based on WiMAX (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) mobile technology (IEEE 802.16e) that fulfils the telecommunications needs in the railway environment. The WiMAX mobile technology most relevant features are: transmission rates up to 30Mbps at 15 km distance; mobility support up to 200km/h; QoS, security, low latency, fast, scalable and cost effective deployment, mainly compared to GSM-R deployment. In the mobile node design of this network telecommunications architecture, the multipath fading effect, and the Doppler effect, present in high speed mobility scenarios, have been taken into account. An improvement in the handoff between BSs, through a neighbouring and predictive mobility algorithm, is included. The architecture proposed supports the functional and system requirements identified in the UIC Project EIRENE (European Integrated Railway Radio Enhanced Network), and demanded to GSM-R technology. Measures on a real testbed and a model developed with the discrete event simulation tool, Opnet, have been employed in this work.

Resumen
The objective of this study is to identify the vulnerabilities that can affect the security of telecommunication systems and to determine the critical factors for improving the security of telecommunication systems. The authors conducted a focus group as qualitative method used for this research with twelve specialists who have a technical position and a vast experience in the telecommunication industry to highlight the critical factors for improving the security of the telecommunication systems. Based on the given answers by the specialists, there were identified thirty-one factors that can be spitted in three categories: technological factors, human factors, and legal factors. For the research limitation, the factors were strictly identified based on the given answers by the selected participants to the focus group. As the practical implication, the authors highlighted first the factors that were defined as vulnerabilities for the security of telecommunication system and determined the critical factors that must be monitored on a regular basis by every company to maintain a safe telecommunication system. As the value of this paper, the authors selected twelve important specialists who have a vast experience in this area and using their answers, it was designed a model of the critical factors that will help every company to improve their security capabilities.

Beiker, Sven. Unsettled Issues Regarding Communication of Automated Vehicles with Other Road Users. SAE International, noviembre de 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.4271/epr2020023.

Texto completo
Resumen
The focus of this SAE EDGE™ Research Report is to address a topic overlooked by many who choose to view automated driving systems and AVs from a “10,000-foot” perspective: how automated vehicles (AVs) will actually communicate with other road users. Conventional (human-driven) vehicles, bicyclists, and pedestrians already have a functioning system of understating each other while on the move. Adding automated vehicles to the mix requires assessing the spectrum of existing modes of communication – both implicit and explicit, biological and technological, and how they will interact with each other in the real world. The impending deployment of AVs represents a major shift in the traditional approach to ground transportation; its effects will inevitably be felt by parties directly involved with the vehicle manufacturing and use and those that play roles in the mobility ecosystem (e.g., aftermarket and maintenance industries, infrastructure and planning organizations, automotive insurance providers, marketers, telecommunication companies). Unsettled Issues Regarding Communication of Automated Vehicles with Other Road Users brings together the multiple scenarios we are likely to see in a future not too far away and how they are likely to play out in practical ways.
