We find that female leaders are better evaluated than male leaders at the beginning. Later, this advantage vanishes together with the surprising effect of having a female leader. We also find that the network clustering of female leaders grows significantly more than the clustering of male leaders.

Resumen
This thesis aimed to enhance understanding of the nature of knowledge bases possessed by elite sports performers which underpin perceptual-cognitive and decision making skills. Two main theories were considered; Active Control of Thought (ACT*) and Representational Redescription (RR). The purpose of Study 1 was to examine the anticipatory ability of elite and non-elite players in football and hockey. The results indicated that elite players in both sports were quicker and more accurate in their expectation of pass destination. Study 2 aimed to understand the extent to which knowledge is transferable. The results indicated that elite players’ knowledge is relatively domain specific although some elements of underlying task strategy may transfer. The objective of Study 3 was to explore the means by which elite and non-elite players in football and hockey identify and differentiate between possible decisions. Results showed elite players’ rationale was based on deeper theoretical principles whilst non-experts utilised relatively superficial information and naïve theories. Study 4 focussed on problem representations of elite and non-elite football players. Results revealed elite players’ representations were more pertinent, connected and articulated in a more effective manner. Overall, the findings from the current thesis provide advanced understanding of the knowledge bases responsible for perceptual-cognitive and decision making skill, and such understanding may assist attempts to enhance athletes’ performance and support future research.

The Hippo pathway, firstly described in Drosophila and highly conserved in mammals, has been demonstrated to play a crucial role in the organ size control. This kinase cascade regulates the phosphorylation of the downstream effector YAP (or its paralogue TAZ), a transcriptional coactivator with oncogenic activity. Its function is mediated by its nuclear translocation and interaction with the transcriptional factor TEAD, to form YAP-TEAD complex which activates the genes expression in charge of cell proliferation triggering organ growth. Overexpression of YAP/TAZ/TEAD protein in several cancers disrupts the Hippo pathway balance and urges on YAP-TEAD complex formation causing excessive proliferation and cancer development. Inhibiting this protein-protein interaction is thus a promising therapeutic target for the design of new anti-cancer drugs. In this goal, the laboratory has considered two strategies. The first one consists in targeting the YAP protein by synthesizing dipyrrins, representing Verteporfin fragments to define the minimal requirement yielding the expected biological activity. A second approach involves synthesizing TEAD ligands able to fit in specific interface 3. Based on molecular modeling, a triazole scaffold family was optimized to establish structure-activity relationship. Thanks to the biological and binding tests development, synthesized molecules evaluation is still in progress and the present first results have already allowed identifying a promising compound

Sperling, Brian Keith. "Information Sharing Strategies To Improve Team Mental Models In Complex Systems". Diss., Georgia Institute of Technology, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/6975.

Resumen
This thesis hypothesizes that providing task specific information to individual team members will improve coordination and decision-making, and therefore team performance, at time critical tasks. Major themes addressed in this research include teams and team processes, mental models, team mental models, work domain analysis, and hierarchical task analysis. Furthermore, the theory behind the development of complementary models is introduced. A unique method to identify the information sources and requirements in a complex team environment is first discussed in general and then specifically applied in two domains. The findings are presented of two experiments examining the effects of imposing different information distribution strategies that range from no complementariness to full complementariness of information. Team communication, team and individual task performance, workload, and timeliness and effectiveness of team decision making were assessed in nominal and off-nominal conditions. The first experiment used an automobile simulator and examined team navigation while driving. A second experiment was designed to incorporate additional measures to more specifically investigate individual performance, team workload, and clarity of information requirements using a UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter simulator. The procedures used for both experiments provided for dynamic yet controlled environments through which critical factors that influence team process and performance could be evaluated accurately. Results of these experiments provide empirical evidence that providing task relevant information to individual team members in a time critical environment, while limiting their access to non-relevant information, improves individual and team performance. Furthermore, there is evidence of increased individual performance that indicates this method of distributing information among team members may provide individual crewmembers with a more accurate task relevant mental model of their own environment. This research provides new insight into how the distribution of information among team members effects the development of mental models, information requirements, team and individual performance, and communications, and highlights several directions for future research. The information distribution design principles presented in this thesis address the heterogeneity of teams; teams cannot be thought of as groups of identical individuals. The results concerning the communication, workload, performance and team of mental models were consistent across the domains in this research.

Resumen
Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, System Design & Management Program, June 2004.
"May 2004."
Includes bibliographical references (p. 89).
The automatic transmission is a very complex system in a modern automobile with several hundred components performing mechanical, hydraulic and electronic functions. System integration and attribute management are key challenges in the design and development of an automatic transmission. The system and sub system team structure can play a key part in the success of this development. A properly structured team can enhance the communication between the engineers designing the individual components, ensure that all interfaces between the components are properly managed and appropriate design actions are in place for best in class attributes. This thesis analyzes the current team structure and composition that is in place in the Automatic Transmission Division at Ford Motor Company and offers recommendations to improve the composition to better align the sub system teams with the actual workings of the transmission. The main tool that is used to enable this work is the Design Structure Matrix (DSM). Communication between individual team members is compared to components that physically touch or exchange energy through hydraulic means, or exchange electrical signals and preferred team compositions for effectively engineering these sub systems are proposed. The efficacy of these teams to manage attributes like noise and shift quality is also discussed.

Resumen
Emergency response team (ERT) member characteristics that contribute to High Reliability performance during patient care resuscitation events or other Critical Incident Management Situations are poorly understood. Findings from this study describe individual characteristics that experienced interprofessional ERT members perceive as contributing to High Reliability performance within the critical incident management context. This study supports the need for interprofessional research about emergency response teams’ High Reliability in hospital-based settings. ERT High Reliability, or “better than expected” team performance has been linked to overall patient care and safety. The purpose of this study was to identify and describe individual team member characteristics that contribute to High Reliability performance of ERT members and the overall emergency response team in a naturalistic setting during Critical Incident Management Situations. Using a qualitative descriptive design, data collection included participant observations, field notes, and interviews. Narrative data were audio-taped, transcribed and coded using Ethnograph v6©. Data content were analyzed thematically using inductive interpretive methods. Two major domains derived from the data were Self-Regulation and Whole-Team Regulation. The overarching theme, Orchestrating High Reliability at the Edge of Chaos, encompassed characteristics contributing to High Reliability performance of the ERT during Critical Incident Management Situations.

Texto completo
This thesis explores Ted Hughes’s poetic work and focuses on the question of the completion of being and of language. The poet sheds light on the man of ‘logos’, heir to Socrates and Descartes, criminal because he wanted, by the sole force of his rational mind, to own and control the outer world of nature and to be the master of the inner world of his individuality, body and soul alike. The myths and stories that fill Ted Hughes’s poetic and critical work trace the trajectory of a human being who has acknowledged the harm he has done and asks for forgiveness to the Goddess of Complete Being, both his Mother-Earth and Sacred Bride, both Queen of Hell and Flower of Paradise. As he surrenders to her unconditionally, an ultimate and ‘last-ditch miracle’ occurs, one that reveals his true and divine ‘self at the source’, his ‘vital nucleus’ and ‘the most inaccessible thing of all’. According to the poet, one should speak like the animals and the birds that, far beyond human words, manage to ‘express this being pure and without effort’ and a truth ‘at the core of us – strange, beautiful, pathetic, terrible’. One should decipher the inaudible music of the wind, the grass and the rocks, because it bears the truth of a nameless Goddess, the ‘Annunciation of clay, water and sunlight’, or the ‘crocus evangels’, which tell man that he should take all the risks throughout his journey. The human being that the poet describes has a black wound on his body and a rainbow jewel in his soul; he has been through the softness of agony and the sorrows of ecstasy – and thus he feels the inmost core of being and of language, and the secret of the magic spell cast by poetry

Resumen
The use of multidisciplinary team approach has become one of the preferred service deliveries to help children and young people with high and complex needs. However, there has been little empirical research in this area, particularly within the New Zealand context. Further, a common problem in the existing studies is the use of subjective rating scales or self reports to collect data. Therefore the aim of this study is to describe the team processes of three intersectoral teams in the New Zealand High and Complex Needs Unit using objective data collection method, as well as exploring particular issues associated with the three teams. Valid instruments were developed in order to record the meeting behaviour as frequency tally and the participants were interviewed to seek their views on the issues associated with their team. The results suggested that the teams engaged in positive team behaviour 82% to 93% of the meeting duration and negative meeting behaviour were observed during 2% to 5% of the meeting times. Further, the teams spent just under half of the meeting time in proposing and discussing goals and strategies. The teams were able to reach decisions and distributed responsibilities in less than 6 minutes. More than half of the participants had positive attitudes towards collaborative work and considered the team meetings as an effective mechanism for problem-solving and plan evaluation. The facilitators and the barriers identified in this study are consistent with the literature. Implications for future practice and research are discussed.

Poulos, Nicholas. "The influence of complex training design on post-activation performance enhancement of explosive performance in team sport athletes". Thesis, Edith Cowan University, Research Online, Perth, Western Australia, 2022. https://ro.ecu.edu.au/theses/2531.

Texto completo
Resumen
Post-activation performance enhancement (PAPE) is a phenomenon characterised by the acute enhancement of muscular performance consequent to prior voluntary, dynamic contractile activity, and is the premise underpinning complex training (CT). CT involves alternating a conditioning stimulus (CS) with a lighter load biomechanically similar ballistic exercise (complex-pair), separated by a defined intra-complex recovery interval. One of the key benefits of CT is the ability to train both extremes of the forcevelocity curve within a single training session, offering a potentially efficient and effective means of augmenting both acute explosive muscular performance and chronic training adaptations in maximal strength and power. The challenge for sports practitioners is to design CT protocols that facilitate PAPE of muscular power characteristics of the individual athlete within the constraints of a team sport environment. Consideration of the factors that modulate the expression of PAPE in the design of CT protocols is essential. Specifically, consideration of the mode, volume, and intensity of the CS, the intra-complex and inter-set recovery, and the influence of athlete strength characteristics is required. More importantly, the influence of performing multiple complex-sets, the effect of sequencing lower and upper body complex-sets, and the impact of performing ancillary exercise within the intra-complex recovery on the expression of PAPE warrants attention. Purpose: The primary purpose of this series of studies was to investigate the influence of CT protocol design and the factors that modulate the expression of PAPE of acute explosive performance in developing and trained team sport athletes. Outcomes arising from this work are aimed at providing a practical framework for sports practitioners to better inform the design and implementation of CT protocols in high-performance strength and conditioning programs. Methodology: The first study examined the effect of CS intensity on the magnitude of PAPE of countermovement jump (CMJ) performance over multiple complex-sets and further investigated if athlete relative strength level is a criterion for identifying responders to PAPE. The second experimental study addressed the parameters of CS mode and intensity in CT session design, examining the efficacy of varying load jump squats (JS) on acute drop jump (DJ) performance. Lastly, the third experimental study investigated the effect of CT session design on PAPE of loaded JS and ballistic bench throws (BBT)—more specifically, if manipulating the sequence of upper and lower body complex-sets and interspersing ancillary exercise within the intra-complex recovery period modified the expression of any PAPE. Results: CMJ peak jump height was enhanced in response to both moderate intensity (65% 1-RM) and high intensity (87% 1-RM) conditioning stimuli. PAPE of several DJ kinetic and kinematic variables following JS performed at both 30% and 50% 1-RM back squat loads was observed, however, the frequency and magnitude of PAPE was greatest in athletes following the 30% 1-RM CS load. Small magnitudes of PAPE were observed in various JS and BBT kinetic and kinematic variables in each of the three CT protocols examined, yet no clear or consistent performance benefit was present across sets. Associations between relative strength and PAPE are dependent on CS intensity and CT protocol design. Conclusions: The most important finding of this thesis is that the sequencing of multiple lower and upper body complex-sets and the performance of ancillary exercise within the intra-complex recovery are not detrimental to subsequent explosive performance. Furthermore, PAPE of JS and DJ performance is achievable with a range of CS intensities and appears to be dominant in variables with a prevalent eccentric component. Finally, the influence of relative strength on the expression of PAPE is dependent on CT session design. The application of CT has merit in training team sport athletes and affords practitioners the ability to provide both heavy-resistance and ballistic training stimuli in a time efficient manner.

This project was a step forward in the examination and identification of key variables on the perception, decision making and action of team sport athletes through theoretical insights provided by the ecological dynamics perspective. The methodology drew on experiential knowledge of elite coaches to drive further empirical investigation into the specific task, environmental and personal constraints that shape the behaviour of athletes in specific performance contexts. The thesis has provided an effective rationale for further investigation into the emergent perception, decision making and action demanded of athletes in these unpredictable, fluent, fast-paced environments.

Resumen

Improvisational Leadership: A Descriptive Case Study of the Complex Problem-Solving Experiences of a High-Functioning Federal Government Interdisciplinary Team This study described the symbiotic relationship between shared leadership, organizational improvisation, and symbolic interactionism in generating improvisational leadership vis a vis the complex problem-solving experiences of a high-functioning federal government interdisciplinary team of six veterinarians. The study had a dual goal orientation: (a) to describe members' experiences of complex problem-solving; and (b) to describe how members shared leadership during these experiences. The grand tour question for this study was: What is the nature of improvisational leadership via the complex problem-solving experiences of a high-functioning federal government interdisciplinary team?

The purpose of this study was to describe the nature of improvisational leadership in the complex problem-solving experiences of a high-functioning federal government interdisciplinary team. This study observed that by virtue of their interdisciplinary-interdependent expertise, members were perpetually engaged in interactive knowledge exchange. The research revealed that the medium for these exchanges was polylogue or concurrent, multidirectional, ongoing conversations among the members. The study determined that through this level of discourse and interactivity in real-time, the foci remained on the situation specific needs and in turn placed the needed expertise in the leadership position/role.

The study was designed to broaden understanding concerning the nature of improvisational leadership via the complex problem-solving experiences of a high-functioning federal government interdisciplinary team through describing leadership as an emergent consequence of the needs of the moment, the actions and interactions among members, and the available material, cognitive, affective, and social resources brought to bear in process.

Tearing of the muscle-tendon complex is a common sport-related injury for athletes. Many studies reported description of this traumatism but mechanisms leading to such an injury are still unclear as are the site of mechanical failure and involved structures. The aim of the thesis is to describe the phenomenon of the muscle-tendon-complex’s tear using the discrete element method and validating the numerical model with experimental data. In the first part, a literature review explains the different properties of the muscle-tendon complex main components’ in order to model it at the macroscopic scale. In the second part, the muscle-tendon complex is modeled. Validation of the mechanical behavior in passive tensile test is proposed by comparison with experimental data from L.-L. Gras on human sternocleidomastodeus muscle. Then, the different influences of morphometric parameters on the mechanical behavior of the complex are investigated. The third part focuses on the rupture. A model of the complex set of {Achilles tendon/surae triceps} is built and a tensile test until rupture is applied. Model validity is assessed by comparison with in vitro experiments from human cadavers. The fourth part focuses on the muscular activation, implemented inside fibers’ behavior. Validity of its active behavior is investigated. This fifth and last presents the enrichment with destructive tensile test. This added test allows first to study the feasibility to model the tear with the discrete element method; and second to focus on damaged structures and rupture’s mechanisms. This offers possibilities for clinical applications of this model to understand and prevent injuries caused by a tear of the muscle-tendon complex

Introduction: The vertical jump ability is essential for performance in many sports. The use of complex training has in previous research been shown to provide significantly improved power development. Post-Activation Potentiation (PAP) is a physical phenomenon that increases muscle tension and the force development of the working muscles which can be implemented in complex training. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether athletes in basketball, football, handball and volleyball will have a favorable increase in Countermovement jump with arm swing (CMJa) if they perform heavier squats with a load of 50% and 80% of their estimated or measured 1 repeat maximum (RM) before CMJa. Method: 9 men and 2 women, age 20.6±3.3 years, height 181.4±7.4 cm, 76.9±12.6 kg body mass participated in the study. All participants were active in one of the sports basket, football, handball or volleyball. The participants performed two set of squats followed by five set of two repetition CMJas with a five minutes rest in between. An infrared sensor MuscleLab was used to analyze the jump height. Results: The result showed no significant difference between heavy squats and jump height in CMJa over time (p=0.98). Conclusion: Squats with 50% and 80% of 1RM do not seem to improve jump height performance in CMJ on team sports players. The result in this study does not support the results in previous studies showing a positive effect of heavy squats on maximal jump height.

Resumen
The etiology of Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) remains unknown for most of the cases, in spite of its strong genetic component. A greater knowledge of its genetic basis would result in many benefits, including specific genetic counseling for families and, eventually, the development of personalized therapeutic strategies. In this thesis, we have applied several recent sequencing technologies and adapted pipelines to its study. We have investigated the role of rare variants and its transcriptional consequences and explored the contribution of complex rearrangements to its missing heritability. In addition, we have studied second-hit susceptibility genetic factors in a group of individuals with Williams-Beuren syndrome, a genomic disorder associated with a mirror phenotype. Finally, we have explored parental knowledge and the effect of genetic counseling in affected families. Our results reveal that both highly penetrant mutations and inherited variants of milder effect contribute to its susceptibility, following monogenic and oligogenic or multifactorial models, respectively. Each of them may contribute to part of the variability and may explain a subset of cases.

Through this study, we intend to identify possible changes in the Brazilian national soccer team’s identity and also to find which elements have contributed to this transformation. We are seeking for new perspectives from both the fans and the media regarding the Brazilian team. In order to achieve that, we will make use of two classical concepts proposed by Nelson Rodrigues. The first one is known as “'the nation in soccer shoes'”, a feeling which all Brazilians fans feel when the national team wins, and the second, “the mongrel complex”, a sense of inferiority felt when de national soccer team loses. Both of the concepts will be used as categories for our research. Can the sports marketing be blamed for this “new” identity? Did the globalization process; the significant number of Brazilian soccer stars playing overseas; the posture of the main sponsor (Nike) over the Brazilian Soccer Confederation (CBF)’s decisions, instigate some type of detachment from the media and fans? In order to answer these questions, a survey was applied to the fans, before the Confederation Cup held in Brazil in 2013, and, in addition to that, the columns of three sportswriters were analyzed over six months to evaluate if the nation is still in “soccer shoes” or if it means that our “mongrel complex” still prevails?

Resumen
Hospitalised patients who deteriorate and require emergency medical review will most likely remain on a general ward after the review. Judgements about the level of care required to safely manage these patients on the ward after medical emergency team review are complex, but rarely incorporate a formal assessment of illness severity. This challenges staff and ward resource allocation practices and patient safety. This study measured the illness severity, in terms of physiological acuity and interventional dependency, of patients after emergency medical review. Novel statistical methods were used to identify then profile patient risk for death and potentially preventable adverse outcomes.

Thorup, Pernille. "Strategy-making in a senior leadership team in the public sector in Denmark : taking experience seriously as co-creation, conflict and paradox". Thesis, University of Hertfordshire, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/2299/17226.

Texto completo
Resumen
Much current literature on management and strategy still describes strategy work as a linear, top-down, management-based, rational, logical, structured and planned change activity with clear and predictable goals. It is described as an activity in which individual managers are addressing key questions and implementing an important, management-based plan. By using the right tools and techniques, skilled managers can transform plans into reality through good leadership and systematic rollout. This way of thinking about leadership is based on an understanding of leaders as rather powerful, knowing, heroic individuals who can stand outside of their organization to plan an ideal future, and who are equipped to make employees follow their instructions in order to reach desired goals. In this thesis I research into my experiences of what is happening in an organization, taking seriously the experience of developing a new strategy. It is an organization working in the public sector in Denmark which is right now trying to find a strategy and its way through a series of 'wicked problems' not easily handled. Through the use of autobiographical narrative-based inquiry and a focus on everyday local interactions between people working together, I research into what is 'really' going on in strategy work. Drawing on the theory of complex responsive processes of relating and reflexivity, I describe and analyse the interactions in our leadership team's efforts to change the organization's strategy. In doing so themes of power, power games and power differentials, politicking and some of the paradoxes in management - such as inclusion/exclusion, local interaction and global patterning, unpredictable predictability, and conflict and cooperation - are investigated. The complex responsive process perspective views organizations as patterns of interaction and conversations between people working together. By analogy from complex adaptive systems models, sociology, psychology and philosophy, it argues that generalizable population-wide patterns emerge in unpredictable ways through exactly these local complex interaction and interplays of people's intentions, thoughts and actions. This leads me to propose generalizable new contributions to knowledge about strategy work. Examining my own experience, I problematize the 'heroic', individualistic, view of what leaders do when working with strategy, preferring to see strategy as a co-created activity that emerges in complex and paradoxical interactions between people in the organization, in the leadership team, in daily cooperation with employees, and through the interface with customers. The understanding of co-creation here being that together we co-create our social life and our social life is co-creating us, our selves, our personalities at the same time. This inseparable paradox of the individual and the group, of the one and the many is investigated. Finally, I suggest that strategy work is inseparable from the everyday messy conflictual power games of organizational life, and that leaders - through actively engaging in ongoing conversations and co-creating meaning - participate in developing new understandings of identity and culture. In talking with one another about what it is we are doing, in influencing and being influenced, and reflecting on this, we are already changing what is going on; this itself is strategy work. The narratives show that to work with strategy effectively, we need to negotiate our intentions in convincing ways through forming strong power alliances. Taking experience seriously also demonstrates a close connection between power, ethics and action, and that it is impossible to decide the 'good' thing to do before acting. Developing reflexivity, both as an individual and in collaborative work, is a prerequisite for working in an ethical way, aware of our mutual interdependence. Finally, the thesis describes some of the consequences of taking experience seriously as a strategy. It has changed the way our staff understand what they are doing, and is beginning to change the kind of assignments we take on, and how we deal with them. One spin-off has been producing two books (with more to come). We also have new and more reflexive contacts in business and knowledge-creating environments, such as universities and business schools. The thesis shows a number of results from working with strategy in this way. This indicates that the act of taking your experience seriously in itself implies a kind of transforming causality, and hereby a strategy of change.

Our research work is included in Sport psychology and Cognition. Decision-making, in a dynamic and complex context, involves parameters such as perception, memory, knowledge or experience. Elite athletes are better than novices in their ability to perceive relevant cues and act on them to adapt to the environment. Three of our studies have shown that this expert superiority is reflected, for adults, in the ability to react to a signal, especially when the task was specific. However, the fourth study revealed that these differences did not exist for adolescents. The last two studies sought to assess the influence of intense exercise in adults, and of a serie of training in adolescents, always on the ability to react to a specific situation. We showed on the one hand that post-exercise performance had been improved in adults, and on the other hand that this performance had not changed in adolescents after two days and half of training. We discussed the importance of studying decision making in a specific context in an attempt to understand the connection between performance on cognitive tests and performance on the field

Karoki, Teckie Michelle. "Leadership Styles and Learning for Performance Within Commercial Banks in Kenya". ScholarWorks, 2016. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/2839.

Texto completo
Resumen
The literature indicates that leaders influence the establishment of organizational learning culture (OLC) by the application of transformational (TFO), transactional (TAC), and passive-avoidant (PAV) styles. Further, the literature links OLC to the financial performance of organizations by leadership involvement in establishing learning organizations. However, the manner in which the practice of OLC occurs and the relationship of OLC with TFO, TAC, and PAV is unclear, as is the link between OLC and financial performance (ROA); especially for growing economies outside North America. The purpose of this study was to address this gap in the literature through a quantitative study of leadership styles and their relationship to OLC based on complexity and contingency leadership theories, and organizational learning theory. The research questions focused on establishing the association between TFO, TAC, and PAV and OLC, and the link between OLC and ROA. Data from 40 commercial banks in Kenya were collected and multiple regression models developed. TFO and PAV Leadership styles were associated significantly with OLC; TAC did not have a significant relationship with OLC. OLC was linked significantly to ROA. The results of this study show that leaders of commercial banks build relationships with followers and support learning within their institutions; however, the results of this study show that these leaders engage in a limited form of organizational learning practice. This study has potential to contribute to positive social change by providing information about leadership and organizational learning strategies that advance transformational engagement with followers and organizational performance.

The present paper is based on the thought that there can be no simplified way of understanding and analyzing the facts surrounding human existence and, therefore, a linear approach to exercising multiprofessional care in the process of death and dying. Thus, investing in studies on the phenomenon of death and dying from the perspective of complexity thinking will contribute to the establishment of a "new professional order", motivated by an extended and systemic understanding of care throughout the existential cycle. The purpose of this study was to validate the theoretical-practical construct on the multiprofessional care of neonates in the process of death and dying in neonatal intensive care units, following a complexity thinking. And, as specific objectives: To analyze the scientific productions on multiprofessional care in the process of death and dying in neonatal intensive care units; To know the perception of the multiprofessional team of neonatal intensive care units on the process of death and dying of neonates, and To describe the stages of construction on the process of death and dying in neonatal and pediatric intensive care units . In order to meet the first objective, an integrative research was carried out in PubMed, Lilacs and Bdenf Databases, which resulted in the inclusion of 13 productions, which were decoded into three categories of analysis: the perception of the multiprofessional team about the process of death and dying, strategies of care in the face of neonatal death and family reaction to the process of death and dying. To meet the second objective, a qualitative exploratory-descriptive study was carried out through a focus group technique with 35 professionals from the multiprofessional team who work in a neonatal and pediatric intensive care unit from May to July. A third specific objective was reached through a methodological research, which sought to describe the construction and validation stages of a construct on the process of death and dying in neonatal intensive care units, following a complexity thinking. In response to the latter objective, on the analysis of renowned specialists, a return of twelve instruments were evaluated in the first round and eleven instruments in the second Delphi round. In the first round, suggestions were made for changes in relation to the conceptual and formative dimensions of the construct. The construct was considered valid, both in content and appearance and will contribute to the expanded and multiprofessional understanding of the process of death and dying of neonates and children locally and nationally. It is concluded, therefore, that the process of death and dying of neonates and children constitutes a singular and complex process, both for the multiprofessional team and for the family members. In this direction, the validation of a theoretical-practical construct on the process of death and dying, in the perspective of complex thinking, constitutes a proactive strategy for the (re) thinking of human existence itself, in addition to enabling theoretical-practical reflections among professionals of the multiprofessional team that contributes to the confrontation of the adversities and the uncertainties inherent to existential and caring dynamics. Complex thinking corroborates, in this direction, with the bet that it is not possible to escape the uncertainties and adversities of life, but that it is necessary to assume death and dying as a phenomenon that is part of the existential dynamics.

It is a descriptive qualitative research, accomplished in a Brazilian branch of a French multinational company, that it aims at to analyze how the semi-autonomous groups methodology works in a management point of view. As the increasing empowerment by the use of these semi-autonomous groups is a recognized practice of improving competitiveness in the companies, it was necessary to identify which aspects related to the implantation methodology, chosen by the multinational, presented positive aspects and deficiencies in the employees optics. The used methodology is a case study, where in the data collection was used a questionnaire and daily observations of the company. The chosen universe is the operational department of the multinational, due to its largest implication in the implementation of the semi-autonomous groups. The chosen sample refers to a specific section of the assembly department, because it was considered representative in the analysis universe. The associate theory, from which the questionnaire was elaborated, found the necessary abilities/knowledge to the implementation of semi-autonomous groups, as well as the three competence dimensions idealized for Le Boterf, generating thirty six questions, being two for each relationship abilities/knowledge - competence dimensions between abilities/knowledge and competence dimensions. The conclusion of the questionnaires results analyses basing on the lifted up theories, the implantation manual of the multinational and the section observations, identified five roads of progress so that it is possible to develop the necessary competences to the semi-autonomous groups of this multinational. Which are: leadership formation and sensitization, development of the evaluation system, complete implantation of the spokes, formation / training in the other necessary competences to GSA and implantation of monthly team meetings.

Competition and technological change have never been as intense as they are today. To survive, companies must increasingly carry out current activities at the same time that they explore future ones. It is no easy task to operate on both of these fronts, and doing so is a potential source of tension and contradiction. Although management research has provided insight into the exploration and exploitation tension, there are still contradictions and unexplored areas. In particular, there is no consensus on the definition of the concepts of exploration and exploitation, which means the research lacks a certain level of consistency. In addition, there has been very little attention paid to the Exploration/Exploitation tension in the context of young, growing “scale-up” companies, which are particularly exposed to threats to their survival. To obtain a better understanding of the situations this tension causes in these companies, we have adopted a multi-paper dissertation consisting of three complementary studies. In the first study, to create a conceptual framework for the thesis, we answer researchers’ call for a clarification of the concepts of exploration and exploitation by proposing a typology of exploration. Then, based on a longitudinal, multi-case approach focused on eight scale-up companies, we first explore, in a second study, the factors influencing firms’ strategic orientations vis-à-vis exploration and exploitation activities. Finally, in the third study, we seek to understand how management teams define their individual roles with respect to exploration and exploitation activities

Resumen
Whether it is offering services, delivering solutions or driving innovations, team work has been a hallmark of efficiency and effectiveness in various industries. The healthcare industry is not left out as its service delivery process involves numerous interfaces, information flows and patient hand-offs among professionals with different educational training, differing knowledge levels and possibly working from different locations as well. As healthcare delivery evolves to being more patient-centered, so does the team settings as well, becoming more collaborative. Such changes also translate into a need for support systems to evolve to be able to provide support for the extent of collaboration that would be needed. A framework is needed to guide in the development of such systems. However, due to the varying needs of patients, team types and make-up would generally differ, so we explored the different types of team settings studying what they entail based on their various degrees of collaboration. We therefore present in this thesis a model of team based concepts, an ontology formalizing the model, team based scenarios designed using the ontology and then application of the scenarios to test the ability of BPMN (Business Process Modeling Notation) to model healthcare teams.

This thesis is part of a research project conducted by the French Institut de Recherche Biomédicale des Armées (Armed Forces Biomedical Research Institute). The project aims to respond to a request made by the Admiral Commander of the Oceanic and Strategic Forces following several incidents in which a failure to transmit information within the SSN’s Diving Safety team was identified as a causal factor.Domain. The Diving Safety team, which is located in the Operation and Navigation Department, is responsible for the driving and maintenance of the submarine’s technical safety. This team works closely with other teams, mainly through verbal communication (face-to-face and remote). An initial analysis of their activities identified the team leader as a key element in the transmission of information between the command post and the members of the Diving Safety team, as this person has direct control of the process. The latter requires developing situation awareness (SA) that meets the objectives set by the command post and the constraints faced by his teammates. The research program described in this thesis focuses on the role of the team leader on mechanisms for developing collective SA when managing a dynamic and risky situation.Method. Our observations were made with 15 teams of 6 submariners, during simulation exercises that are part of their assessed training that is held prior to mission departure. These situations are highly time-constrained and are punctuated by several problem-solving phases. The method that we implemented to study the development of collective SA is based on the characterization of verbal interactions.Problem statement. We argue that collective SA emerges from the information shared within the team. Since the team leader is central in this network, the characterization of the information he exchanges with his teammates makes it possible to report on the dynamics of the development of the collective SA.Empirical studies. The first part of the thesis consists in the analysis of activity during an interesting episode from the point of view of developing SA, with alternating driving and problem-solving phases. This study allowed us to identify the dynamics of the tasks performed, and to establish two performance criteria, one for driving and one for problem solving. The second part aims to characterize communication flows based on a method derived from the social networks analysis. The objective is to study the impact of operators’ experience on the structure of verbal communication, on the one hand, and the links between the network structure and performance (driving and problem solving), on the other. The third part aims to identify in verbal communication the cognitive processes and objects involved in developing collective SA. The objective is to analyse the impact of operators’ experience on the content of verbal communication, on the one hand, and the links between the content of verbal communication and performance on the other. The originality of this thesis lies, in part, in this articulation of methods for analysing the structure and content of verbal communication, in close connection with the activity, in order to understand how collective SA develops in a dynamic and risky situation

Resumen
Drug development which is a bit challenging and complex process that involves the development, discovery, design, and assessment of potential therapeutic agents. Meningioma, most common among the brain tumor which are generally asymptomatic in nature is characterized by the NF2 gene loss. The current treatment options such as resection and radiotherapy have limitations, with high rates of relapse or recurrence. The lack of FDA-approved drugs specific to meningioma necessitates the exploration of alternative approaches. Currently combination of FDA approved drug for other cancer were given to patients but the side effects and failure rates were high. To battle meningioma, natural substances are being researched as potential inhibitors of particular pathways, such as the YAP/TEAD complex in the Hippo signaling pathway. YAP/TEAD complex is responsible for uncontrolled cell progression in meningioma , by targeting this complex we can make a drug or treatment of meningioma. In this study, molecular docking was used to undertake in silico work and inhibition approach was used to find naturally occurring molecules with comparable structures that might potentially interact with the target receptor. out of 50 phytochemical,10 were selected on the basis of bioavailability test and lead likeness The white mulberry Morus alba plant's bark flavonoid, sanggenon N, was discovered to be the study's lead substance. Sanggenon N may have lesser negative effects than synthetic medications because the Sanggenon family of chemicals has demonstrated therapeutic potential. Another flavonoid called isostaivan showed the second-highest binding affinity.. Further analysis confirmed that Sanggenon N could act as an inhibitor of the 6UYC protein, which is the TEAD complex in Homo sapiens, thereby inhibiting the YAP/TEAD complex. This inhibition can potentially suppress cell proliferation and tumor growth in meningioma. It is crucial to emphasize that these results are based on in silico work and that additional validation through wet lab research is required.

Team adaptation is paramount for effective teamwork in complex work environments. Literature suggests that team member characteristics, episodic team processes, and emergent states contribute to collective ability to behave adaptively. However, we know very little about the causes and conditions under which these constructs relate to predict adaptation and effectiveness in complex work environments requires further clarification. In this dissertation, we focus on the multilevel, cross-level and longitudinal examination of the dynamics of team member characteristics, episodic team processes, and emergent states driving team adaptation in the work place. In this dissertation data collection was done in simulated and field settings. Participants were university students and professional workers from diverse organizational settings (e.g. business; healthcare; police). Hypotheses testing were done through regression and structural equations modelling. Regression was used to estimate direct, indirect, and conditioned effects. Structural equations modelling were used to estimate indirect, multilevel and longitudinal effects. Overall, the results suggest that team adaptation contributes to team effectiveness in complex work environments. Our results also contribute to clarify the entanglement between team member characteristics, processes and emergent states in teams. This dissertation contributes to theory and practice as it extends previous knowledge on the dynamics of team adaptation, and it makes recommendations of why and how HRM practices should incorporate our findings in people management.

Jiang, Silis Y. "A Team-Based Approach to Studying Complex Healthcare Processes". Thesis, 2017. https://doi.org/10.7916/D8MP5FRN.

Resumen
Communication is a critical aspect of clinical work. In 2010, the Joint Commission (JC) found that gaps in communication were among leading factors contributing to medical errors. Healthcare processes, such as patient discharge, depend on interdisciplinary communication to be successful. Electronic health records (EHRs) have the potential to facilitate communication and information sharing between interdisciplinary care team members; however, challenges remain in designing tools for team-based care and questions remain in understanding how EHRs impact interdisciplinary team communication. This dissertation focuses on understanding how EHRs can be designed to support communication and information sharing within interdisciplinary patient care teams. The first aim of the dissertation investigated how EHRs impact interdisciplinary clinical teams’ communication, shared mental models, and information sharing activities. The results showed that implementing new EHR tools appeared to have little impact on communication and shared mental models, but new information sharing activities mediated by EHR developed. These changes and lack thereof suggest that new EHR tools will be specifically needed to facilitate interdisciplinary team information sharing activities. The second aim of the dissertation investigates the information sharing activities and information needs of interdisciplinary team members during patient discharge. The results showed that the information clinicians sought out during discharge depended on the roles that person played as well as the progress of the discharge process. Future EHR tools should be aware of how patient care teams are progressing through the patient discharge process in order to provide information contextualized to their current tasks. In conclusion, interdisciplinary team communication and information sharing remain poorly supported by current EHRs and new tools designed specifically for interdisciplinary teams should provide information based on the completion of team activities.

Resumen
The objective of this study was to investigate the role of team sex composition in team training performance and team processes in the context of a complex, psychomotor, information–processing task. With the growing number of women in the workplace, the role of, and implications for, team sex composition is an important research question because there are performance domains, such as psychomotor tasks, where replicable sex differences have been documented. We used 92 four–person teams to investigate the relationship between team sex composition, team declarative knowledge, team–efficacy, team communication, team cohesion, and team performance on a complex, psychomotor, information–processing task. The results indicate that team sex composition was significantly related to team performance and team declarative knowledge. Furthermore, team performance and team declarative knowledge showed significant mean differences across the levels of team sex composition, such that teams with a larger proportion of males had higher scores on each of the variables. As hypothesized, team communication showed an opposite effect where teams with higher proportions of females reported larger amounts of communication, but none of the team sex composition pairwise comparisons were significantly different. The posited relationship between team cohesion and team homogeneity was not supported. Finally, there was no evidence for any of the process variables moderating the relationship between team sex composition and team performance. Team sex composition may be an important variable in training situations where past sex differences have been demonstrated on the performance task of interest. The findings suggest the need to consider instructional design strategies that may mitigate the negative effects of team sex composition on team performance. Future research is needed to determine the extent to which findings from this single study generalize to other psychomotor task domains and how all–female teams will perform under similar circumstances.

The pain of ulnar side of wrist is a challenging issue in orthopedics. This is often caused by the damage of triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC). The function of TFCC is to maintain the stability of the wrist joint when rotation and distribute the mechanical stress from the hand. It is still controversial in the surgical approach of TFCC repair. Due to the development of minimal invasive surgery, arthroscopic transosseus suture repair was recommended. However, some surgeons still believed that open repair had better prognosis. Hence, the objective of this study was to evaluate the biomechanical stability of arthroscopic and open approaches for triangular fibrocartilage complex foveal repair Six matched pairs of fresh-frozen forearm cadaver specimens were prepared for testing. Open repair with suture anchor and arthroscopic transosseous suture with a new aiming device were evaluated. Before and after disruption of the TFCC fovea and after its repair, dorsal and palmar translation of the ulna was measured in both groups in response to a load (3 kg) applied in the palmar and then in the dorsal direction. The total translation of the ulna was calculated as the sum of the mean dorsal and palmar translations. The athroscopic transosseous suture technique demonstrated superior repair efficacy to the open repair technique in terms of biomechanical strength. This cadaveric study also demonstrated the feasibility of a new aiming device

Resumen
Humans need to interact socially with others and the environment. These interactions lead to complex systems that elude naïve and casuistic tools for understand these explanations. One way is to search for mechanisms and patterns of behavior in our activities. In this thesis, we focused on players’ interactions in team sports performance and how using complex systems tools, notably complex networks theory and tools, can contribute to Performance Analysis. We began by exploring Network Theory, specifically Social Network Analysis (SNA), first applied to Volleyball (experimental study) and then on soccer (2014 World Cup). The achievements with SNA proved limited in relevant scenarios (e.g., dynamics of networks on n-ary interactions) and we moved to other theories and tools from complex networks in order to tap into the dynamics on/off networks. In our state-of-the-art and review paper we took an important step to move from SNA to Complex Networks Analysis theories and tools, such as Hypernetworks Theory and their structural Multilevel analysis. The method paper explored the Multilevel Hypernetworks Approach to Performance Analysis in soccer matches (English Premier League 2010-11) considering n-ary cooperation and competition interactions between sets of players in different levels of analysis. We presented at an international conference the mathematical formalisms that can express the players’ relationships and the statistical distributions of the occurrence of the sets and their ranks, identifying power law statistical distributions regularities and design (found in some particular exceptions), influenced by coaches’ pre-match arrangement and soccer rules.
