Christidis, Les y Walter E. Boles. Systematics and Taxonomy of Australian Birds. CSIRO Publishing, 2008. http://dx.doi.org/10.1071/9780643095601.

Texto completo
Resumen
Systematics and Taxonomy of Australian Birds presents an up-to-date classification of Australian birds. Building on the authors’ 1994 book, The Taxonomy and Species of Birds of Australia and its Territories, it incorporates the extensive volume of relevant systematic work since then. The findings of these studies are summarised and evaluated in the explanations for the taxonomic treatments adopted, and with the extensive citations, the book serves as a comprehensive introduction to the recent systematic literature of Australian birds. All species of birds that have been recorded from the Australian mainland, Tasmania, island territories and surrounding waters are treated and listed. Along with extant native species, all accepted vagrants, recently extinct (since 1800) native species and established introduced species are included.

Cook, Patricia, Philip Bock, Dennis Gordon y Haylee Weaver, eds. Australian Bryozoa Volume 2. CSIRO Publishing, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1071/9781486306831.

Texto completo
Resumen
Bryozoans are aquatic animals that form colonies of connected individuals. They take a variety of forms: some are bushy and moss-like, some are flat and encrusting and others resemble lace. Bryozoans are mostly marine, with species found in all oceans from sublittoral to abyssal depths, but freshwater species also exist. Some bryozoans are of concern as marine-fouling organisms and invasive species, while others show promise as sources of anticancer, antiviral and antifouling substances. Written by experts in the field, Australian Bryozoa Volume 2: Taxonomy of Australian Families is the second of two volumes describing Australia’s 1200 known species of bryozoans, the richest diversity of bryozoans of any country in the world. It contains detailed taxonomic data and illustrated family-level treatments, which can be used to identify specimens. It provides an authoritative reference for biology students, academics and others interested in marine biology.

Resumen
The yeasts described in this chapter are, in general, rare causes of serious human infection. Many are commonly found in the environment or as human commensals. The chapter provides a very brief summary of the following six yeast genera: Malassezia, Rhodotorula, Saccharomyces, Saprochaete, Sporobolomyces, and Trichosporon. Current taxonomy and significant species are also discussed although many fungal taxonomic groups are being re-evaluated in the light of DNA sequencing data, resulting in the renaming of some species and the regrouping of others. Pathogenicity, epidemiology, and clinical aspects are included, and treatment options are discussed. However, as infections caused by these yeasts are uncommon, there is sometimes a lack of supporting data. Culture and identification methods are also summarized, details of which will be presented in other chapters

Resumen
Hyaline moulds are fungi that grow predominantly in a filamentous form with colourless hyphae. This is not a taxonomic grouping and encompasses many thousands of different fungal genera. However, there is a small subset of environmental saprobes or plant pathogenic moulds, currently comprising at least 75 species from 30 different genera, that are opportunistic human pathogens and have been implicated in invasive infections referred to as hyalohyphomycosis. In addition they may cause less invasive cutaneous, subcutaneous, mucous membrane, and corneal infections. This group of organisms includes Fusarium, Sarocladium, Paecilomyces, Purpureocillium, Scedosporium, Rasamsonia, and Scopulariopsis spp., and it is these that form the focus of this chapter. Aspects of taxonomy, cell biology, pathogenesis, epidemiology, incidence, risk factors, presentation, diagnosis, and treatment are discussed with particular reference to those features that are specific to hyaline moulds.

Resumen
Having determined that carbon units are, to varying extents, subject to international economic law, Chapter 8 assesses the consistency of emissions trading schemes and their rules affecting carbon units with that body of law. In particular, Chapter 8 identifies and evaluates the rules in emissions trading schemes affecting the trade, use, and value of carbon units that constitute prima facie violations of that body of law. It considers: (i) the differential treatment of carbon units that engages disciplines on non-discrimination; (ii) the quantitative restrictions on external carbon units that engage disciplines on market access; and (iii) the kinds of governmental interference in carbon markets that engage disciplines on investment. Chapter 8 thereby identifies and catalogues numerous prima facie breaches embedded in the rules of most emissions trading schemes.

Dangerfield, Paul, Andrew Austin y Graeme Baker. Biology, Ecology and Systematics of Australian Scelio. CSIRO Publishing, 2001. http://dx.doi.org/10.1071/9780643100763.

Texto completo
Resumen
Parasitic wasps of the genus Scelio play an important role in the regulation of orthopteran populations and are implicated in suppressing numbers of numerous pest locusts and grasshoppers. This landmark volume provides a full taxonomic treatment of the sixty species of Scelio found on the Australian continent and reviews in detail the biology and ecology and host relationships of Scelio on a worldwide basis. Taking an international perspective, the text outlines our current knowledge on topics such as host finding, population biology, and methods and techniques for collection and study in the field. The use of Scelio as biological control agents is discussed and comprehensive checklists document the recorded host relationships of each known species worldwide. There is a full taxonomic revision of all Australian species of Scelio, half of which are newly described. Each species description is complemented with high-quality line drawings, micrographs and distribution maps. In addition, an illustrated key to species enables easy identification of species by non-taxonomists. Biology, Ecology and Systematics of Australian Scelio provides wasp taxonomists, researchers of orthoptera and biological control workers with a basis for detailed studies elsewhere on this economically important group of insects.

Texto completo
Resumen
This chapter presents a new approach to understanding the design and function of mechanical ventilators. Mechanical ventilators have become so complex that a practical classification system or taxonomy is required to compare and contrast treatment options. This chapter describes the 10 fundamental maxims from which we construct a taxonomy to describe each mode of mechanical ventilation. This method provides a framework for the comparison of published studies of mechanical ventilation, gives consistency in education and clinical practice. It also allows comparisons between different ventilator manufacturers and, most importantly, it provides a framework to match modes to specific patient needs.

In this chapter, my goals are threefold. First, I give a taxonomy of evolutionary explanations of cancer, illustrating distinct types with case studies of explanations of cancer’s origins and prevalence. Second, I argue that cancer progression can be viewed as both a process of selection and a byproduct of selection at distinct levels in the biological hierarchy. Third, I provide a general account of the explanatory role of theoretical models of cancer progression and treatment failure. I use these accounts to illustrate examples of “how possibly” and “a priori” causal modeling.

Resumen
Building on the foundations laid by the gate control theory, Melzack and Casey theorized in 1968 the existence of three separate, yet related determinants of pain: sensory–discriminative, affective–motivational, and cognitive–evaluative. These determinants have roots in separate neurophysiological pathways that modulate the pain experience. The importance of this paper lies in its theoretical contribution to our understanding of pain. Melzack and Casey’s seminal paper, written almost 50 years ago, is not only still contemporary, as evidenced by the internationally agreed upon definition of chronic pain (the IASP taxonomy) but has also contributed to moving from a biomedical understanding of pain to a biopsychosocial model of evaluating and treating pain. This conceptualization of pain continues to influence the way pain is evaluated and is the foundation of the use of non-pharmacological and non-interventional modalities for the treatment of pain (e.g. psychological techniques), and multidisciplinary approaches to pain treatment.

Resumen
In addition to the formal impulse control disorders (ICDs), high rates of trait impulsiveness, sensation seeking, and dissociative qualities have been noted in several other disorders that share similar phenomenological, clinical, and possibly biological characteristics. These proposed disorders include pathological skin picking, compulsive buying, problematic Internet use, and compulsive sexual behavior. Elevated rates of co-occurring ICDs within both the formal and proposed ICDs suggest that at least some of the proposed ICDs may share a common pathophysiology with some of the formal ICDs. Although research has only recently begun to explore pharmacological and psychosocial treatments for the ICDs, studies have shown a similar response between the formal and the proposed ICDs. Future development in understanding the relationship between these disorders will help to refine views of the psychopathology and taxonomy of these conditions.

Resumen
This chapter describes the main components of Adam Smith’s theory of the passions. It offers a detailed taxonomy of the passions. In particular, the chapter discusses four kinds of passions: the natural passions, the proto-passions, the intellectual sentiments, and the derived passions. The chapter also explains the way in which Smith thinks about rationality and the role of reason as a so-called active principle. The chapter introduces a concept, environmental rationality, to articulate what Smith means by sound judgment in a particular context. Finally, by drawing on Smith’s account of the proto-passions and his treatment of reason as an active principle, the chapter shows it is a mistake to understand Smith as a moral empiricist, as is commonly done.

Resumen
The pork and beef tapeworms, Taenia solium and Taenia saginata respectively, are taeniid cestodes and major food-borne or meat-borne zoonoses. Human tapeworms and swine cysticerci have been known since Egyptian and Greek cultures. Nevertheless their association as part of the life cycle of the same parasite was only demonstrated during the nineteenth century. Kuchenmeister fed convicts with cysticerci excised from pork meat and found adult tapeworms in the intestine after autopsy, while van Beneden fed T. solium eggs to pigs and found numerous cysticerci in muscles after slaughter (Grove, 1990).T. solium is the only causative agent of neurocysticercosis in humans and is, therefore, the more important of these species in public health. This chapter describes classical aspects of the morphology of the parasites as well as clinical aspects of the diseases they cause. Most importantly, detailed explanations of taxonomic aspects, specially related to the newly recognized Taenia asiatica are given. Furthermore, the epidemiology and transmission dynamics of the parasites, as well as intervention measures such as health education, mass drug treatment and vaccination, are described in detail. The chapter concludes with considerations on the surveillance and a discussion on prospects for the control of these cestode zoonoses.

Resumen
Recent debates about whether the liberal state should give special treatment to religion focus mainly on two issues: (1) whether religious beliefs deserve special exemptions from the law, and (2) whether religious beliefs can serve as a justification for political decision making. Theories of religious freedom can be described in terms of how they respond to each of these issues. A general taxonomy of such theories makes it possible to draw systematic comparisons between them. It also reveals that competing theories face a familiar pattern of objections based on concerns about equality and anarchy. In important ways, these concerns motivate and constrain all liberal theories of religious freedom. Explicating the tension between equality and anarchy helps to clarify the central commitments and limitations of existing and possible theories. By process of elimination, it also suggests an argument for the appeal of political liberalism.

Resumen
We summarize the formal theoretical literature on Supreme Court decision-making. We focus on two core questions: What does the Supreme Court of the United States do, and how can one model those actions; and, what do the justices of the Supreme Court want, and how can one model those preferences? Given the current state of play in judicial studies, these questions then direct this survey mostly to so-called separation of powers (SOP) models, and to studies of a multi-member (“collegial”) court employing the Supreme Court’s very distinctive and highly unusual voting rule. The survey makes four main points. First, it sets out a new taxonomy that unifies much of the literature by linking judicial actions, modeling conventions, and the treatment of the status quo. In addition, the taxonomy identifies some models that employ inconsistent assumptions about Supreme Court actions and consequences. Second, the discussion of judicial preferences clarifies the links between judicial actions and judicial preferences. It highlights the relationships between preferences over dispositions, preferences over rules, and preferences over social outcomes. And, it explicates the difference between consequential and expressive preferences. Third, the survey delineates the separate strands of SOP models. It suggests new possibilities for this seemingly well-explored line of inquiry. Fourth, the discussion of voting emphasizes the peculiar characteristics of the Supreme Court’s voting rule. The survey maps the movement from early models that ignored the special features of this rule, to more recent ones that embrace its features and explore the resulting (and unusual) incentive effects.

Texto completo
Resumen
Disruptive behavior is extremely common in normal and clinical populations. This book addresses its development, the newly grouped diagnoses associated with it (disruptive behavior disorders), and their biopsychosocial causes and treatment. The past decade has seen a great deal of progress in the psychiatric and psychological literature, which has greatly advanced our understanding of these disorders. The book discusses state-of-the-art studies of taxonomy, epidemiology, etiology, and treatment. Each chapter concludes with a thorough discussion of the clinical implications of this new information, exemplified by real case material. A whole chapter is devoted to the forensic implications of this important grouping of disorders. The chapter begins with a discussion of the exemplary cases in the legal literature, providing the clinician and the expert with a concise briefing of the legal underpinnings of these disorders, which in essence seek to bring the world of medicine to the world of crime. The final chapter provides a concise summary of all preceding chapters, summarizing what we have learned and showing the way into the future in terms of basic research, translational research, and clinical practice. Sources and resources are provided for clinicians, researchers, teachers, primary care physicians, criminologists, forensic experts, and interested lay people.

Texto completo
Resumen
Cryptosporidium species represent a genus of parasitic protozoa (Apicomplexa) that are transmitted via the faecal-oral route and commonly infect the epithelial tissues of the gastric or intestinal (or sometimes the respiratory) tract of many vertebrates, including humans. Infection occurs following the ingestion of viable and resistant oocysts, through direct host-to-host contact or in contaminated food, drinking or recreational water. Infection can be transmitted via anthroponotic (human-to-human, human-to-animal) or zoonotic (animal-to-human or animal-to-animal) pathways, depending upon the species of Cryptosporidium. Although infection can be asymptomatic, common symptoms of disease (cryptosporidiosis) include diarrhoea, colic (abdominal pain), nausea or vomiting, dehydration and/or fever. In humans, cryptosporidial infection in immunocompetent patients is usually short-lived (days to weeks) and eliminated following the stimulation of an effective immune response. However, infection in immunodeficient individuals (e.g., those with HIV/AIDS) can be chronic and fatal (in the absence of immunotherapy), as there are few effective anti-cryptosporidial drugs and no vaccines available. The present chapter provides an account of the history, taxonomy and biology, genomics and genetics of Cryptosporidium, the epidemiology, pathogenesis, treatment and control of cryptosporidiosis and the advances in tools for the identification and characterisation of Cryptosporidium species and the diagnosis of cryptosporidiosis.

Resumen
This book examines how the Social Security Administration determines eligibility for disability benefits based on ability to make work adjustments to jobs in the economy. It examines program history and the agency’s complex adjudicatory processes, as well as the federal judicial framework, through analysis of the SSA’s use of the administrative notice doctrine and vocational expert testimony, including its development and use of unique “grid” regulations with predetermined medical-vocational conclusions and rules upon which to base work adjustment assessments. It explores why that system is broken and based on antiquated assumptions and obsolete empiricism and taxonomies. It examines transformation from a goods-producing to a service-providing economy and other significant labor market changes since inception, such as automation, globalization, and robotics, which have constricted the low-skill job market that SSA disability claimants typically encounter. It challenges the former SSA Deputy Disability Policy Commissioner’s proposal to eliminate vocational factors in work adjustment assessments and use only medical factors, which would have the greatest deleterious impact on Black, Latinx, and the lowest-income claimants, who often lack access to quality health care and regular medical treatment. It further challenges assumptions animating pursuit of more restrictive disability standards, including: trust fund insolvency; disability prevalence; standard leniency, including in global comparisons; fraud; and adjudicators’ claimant-favorable impartiality against the agency—as opposed to claimant-hostile and racially disparate decision-making. After evaluating restrictive proposals such as a revived Reagan administration proposal and proposals influenced by the 1996 welfare reform legislation’s “work first” model, as well as an inclusive one to adopt a European-style occupational standard, the books concludes with recommendations to fix the current process.
