Resumen
Background. Task-based language teaching (TBLT) is still attracting considerable interest from second language teachers and researchers, partly due to unresolved issues of task sequencing and task complexity. Moreover, in spite of burgeoning attention to writing at the present stage of evolution of TBLT, the interaction of task complexity and corrective feedback in writing performance of language learners has not been explored well. Purpose. To fill in this research gap, the present study aimed to explore the role of task complexity and task condition in learners’ gain from corrective feedback in second language writing. Methods. A pretest-immediate posttest-delayed posttest design was adopted in this study. The participants of the study were 114 English as foreign language learners, randomly assigned to one of the five groups: four experimental groups and a control group. The four experimental groups differed in (a) whether they carried out the simple or complex version of a task (b) whether they did the writing task individually or collaboratively. They received feedback on their writing in three treatment sessions. Results. Statistical analyses revealed that task condition played a larger role than task complexity in the linguistic performance of language learners who received feedback on their writing. Conclusion. The findings add support to the view that selecting appropriate levels of task complexity and suitable task implementation conditions alongside providing corrective feedback enhances the different dimensions of the written performance of language learners.

Resumen
Multi-task learning is a computationally efficient method to solve multiple tasks in one multi-task model, instead of multiple single-task models. MTL is expected to learn both diverse and shareable visual features from multiple datasets. However, MTL performances usually do not outperform single-task learning. Recent MTL methods tend to use heavy task-specific heads with large overheads to generate task-specific features. In this work, we (1) validate the efficacy of MTL in low-data conditions with early-exit architectures, and (2) propose a simple feature filtering module with minimal overheads to generate task-specific features. We assume that, in low-data conditions, the model cannot learn useful low-level features due to the limited amount of data. We empirically show that MTL can significantly improve performances in all tasks under low-data conditions. We further optimize the early-exit architecture by a sweep search on the optimal feature for each task. Furthermore, we propose a feature filtering module that selects features for each task. Using the optimized early-exit architecture with the feature filtering module, we improve the 15.937% in ImageNet and 4.847% in Places365 under the low-data condition where only 5% of the original datasets are available. Our method is empirically validated in various backbones and various MTL settings.

Resumen
Abstract A growing body of literature describes important advances in the study of chronic conditions, most notably a paradigm shift from the study of individual chronic conditions to the study of multiple chronic conditions (MCCs). Despite these advances, little research has explored MCC combinations, and almost no published research has explored how MCC combinations are related to cognitive outcomes in older adult populations. Using data from the Health and Retirement Study, we categorized 17,349 older adults into one of 32 groups using self-reports of five of the most commonly diagnosed conditions. These included arthritis, diabetes, heart problems, hypertension, and respiratory problems. We utilized ANOVA to examine the associations between combinations of MCCs and performance on two cognitive tasks associated with executive function and fluid intelligence: verbal fluency and verbal analogies. Results demonstrated that older adults with a greater number of health conditions performed more poorly on both the verbal fluency (p<.0001) and analogies (p<.0001) tasks than those with fewer conditions. Some MCC combinations were associated with poorer cognitive task performance than other combinations: for example, older adults in the Heart-Hypertension-Respiratory group had an average score of 488.73 (SD=24.96) on the verbal analogies task and 14.06 (SD=7.06) on the verbal fluency task. Conversely, adults in the Arthritis-Heart-Respiratory group had average scores of 503.69 (SD=27.89) and 16.45 (SD=7.03), respectively, suggesting differential additive effects of MCCs. These findings demonstrate the complex associations of specific MCC combinations with cognitive performance and highlight the importance of better understanding the unique needs of older people with MCCs.

Resumen
BackgroundDual-task, performing a balance task and a cognitive task simultaneously, has been used as sport-related concussion assessment tool. However, the effect of dual task on balance performance remains controversial. Also, the fluctuation of hormone across menstrual cycle on balance and dual-task performance has not been fully examined.ObjectiveTo examine (1) the effect of dual task on balance performance, (2) the interaction of female sex hormonal level, balance, and dual-task performance.DesignA cohort study.SettingA laboratory of concussion research and services.ParticipantsA group of 49 healthy female college-aged students (age = 21.6 ± 2.0 years).Main outcome measuresThe Stability Evaluation Test (SET) protocol, Balance error scoring system (BESS) test and postural sway velocity (deg/sec) by using VSR SPORT force plate. Three auditory mathematics questions were given for each condition of the SET test. Two single-task conditions were provided, including balance only and math only. Balance test and math questions were given simultaneously during the dual-task condition.ResultsThere was no significantly statistically difference in BESS or sway velocity between single and dual task. However, the performance of math calculation is better in dual-task comparing to the single task (math only), with an 8%–12% higher rate of accuracy, but it didn't reach a statistical significance. The rate of accuracy during the dual task didn't vary among menstrual phases.ConclusionsBalance performance was maintained under dual-task conditions and fluctuation of female sex hormones across the menstrual cycle may not affect working memory and executive function. These findings are potentially clinically applicable to detecting balance deficits and cognitive alterations in female concussed individuals. Future studies are needed to investigate the underlying mechanism of balance maintenance and attention dividend under dual-task conditions.

Resumen
Understanding road surface conditions is an important component in active vehicle safety. Estimations can be achieved through image classification using increasingly popular convolutional neural networks (CNNs). In this paper, we explore the effects of multi-task learning by creating CNNs capable of simultaneously performing the two tasks road surface condition classification (RSCC) and road scene semantic segmentation (RSSS). A multi-task network, containing a shared feature extractor (VGG16, ResNet-18, ResNet-101) and two taskspecific network branches, is built and trained using the Road-Conditions and Cityscapes datasets. We reveal that utilizing task-dependent homoscedastic uncertainty in the learning process improvesmulti-task model performance on both tasks. When performing task adaptation, using a small set of additional data labeled with semantic information, we gain considerable RSCC improvements on complex models. Furthermore, we demonstrate increased model generalizability in multi-task models, with up to 12% higher F1-score compared to single-task models.

Resumen
The aim of the study was to investigate the association between working memory capacity and golf performance in a dual-task paradigm. Twenty-eight golfers with ages varying from 19-58 participated in the study. The participants were instructed to, after assessing their working memory capacity with digit span tests, hit ten golf putts from varying distances in two different conditions, one single-task condition (just performing the golf putts) and one dual-task condition (golf putts plus a working memory task). In the dual-task condition the participants were given an address (including street name, postal code and city) to remember while hitting all ten putts. After hitting the putts in each condition the participants reported their perceived mental effort. Results from the study showed that participants with higher working memory capacity performed better than participants with lower working memory capacity in general, but especially in the distracted condition. Results also showed that participants with higher working memory capacity perceived less mental effort compared to participants with lower working memory capacity, especially in the distracted condition. The findings from this study indicate that working memory capacity is related to performance and mental effort exerted during performance, especially in a distracted condition.

Young, Shikika Sade. "The Durational Effects of a Free Operant Condition on Automatically Maintained Stereotypic Behavior and Discrete Trial Task Responding". Scholar Commons, 2015. http://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/5806.

Texto completo
Resumen
This study examined the effects of three fixed-duration free operant access conditions on rates of automatically maintained stereotypic behavior and correct task responding during discrete trial training (DTT) with two children diagnosed with autism. Following a functional analysis, confirming automatic function, interviews/observations were conducted to identify behavioral indicators of satiation and an average satiation level. In this endeavor, participants were exposed to a free operant condition to validate satiation of stereotypic responding. Once satiation level was averaged, two durational conditions were computed: Long (75% access) and Short (25% access). A third condition, Deprivation, involved blocking all attempts at the stereotypic response for the average duration till satiation. An alternating treatment design was used to examine the effects of these three conditions on stereotypy and correct responding during subsequent discrete trial tasks. For both, participants correct responding did not seem to be affected by the length of the pre-session access to the stereotypic behavior prior to the DTT session. For Marcus, the Long condition may have acted as an abolishing operation (AO) during DTT. Following the Short condition he engaged in higher rates of the stereotypic behaviors during his DTT sessions compared to the other conditions. For the Sara, it appears that pre-session access to stereotypy had little effect on stereotypic behavior during DTT sessions.

Resumen
Mind-wandering was until recently not a mainstream topic of research. The aim of this literature review is to present current views on the definition of mind-wandering and how the phenomenon is experienced. Furthermore, it gives an account of the implications of mind-wandering on cognitive performance, as well as its neurological correlates. In addition, the methods used to study mind-wandering are reviewed. The study of mind-wandering reveals a highly frequent phenomenon with practical consequences on a broad scale, both disruptive and supportive to goal-related behaviour and wellbeing in general. Originating from the default network, and its regions related to representations of self, memory, Theory of Mind, empathy and creativity, mind-wandering is hypothesized to be a function for planning one’s future life. Suggested further research concerns how mind-wandering can be countered, detected from the outside and whether it alters the physical feature of the brain.

Many studies have reported that regular physical activity and cardiorespiratory fitness were associated with cognitive performance and more selectively with executive functions. Among numerous physiological mechanisms that may underlie the association between them, prefrontal cortex oxygenation seems to play a major role. However, the specific impact of prefrontal oxygenation on the link between physical activity and cognition is influenced by several factors, such as gender, age, or cardiovascular health. Therefore, the aim of this thesis was to investigate the impact of physical activity and cardiorespiratory fitness on executive functions across the adults' age span in healthy males, as well as the influence of prefrontal cortex oxygenation and cardiovascular health. To obtain those objectives, we conducted a review of the effect of physical activity on the brain in older adults and four cross-sectional studies. From our review, we highlighted that: • In older adults, higher fitness level is associated with better performance in several executive function tests. Even though the limited number of studies available makes it difficult to draw definitive conclusions.• Better cardiovascular fitness in older adults is associated with improve arterial stiffness, higher vascular reactivity, and greater amplitude of cerebral oxygenation during exercise or cognitive tasks.• Greater gray matter volume and white matter integrity were related to the cardiorespiratory fitness but less consistently related to physical activity.• At least 12 weeks of an aerobic exercise program are required to give advantageous effects to the brainAnd our experimental works show that:In young males:• The active individuals performed better in executive tasks than their inactive counterparts and had a larger change in prefrontal cortex oxygenation during the most complex conditions of Stroop task.• High cardiorespiratory fitness was related to a better performance in dual-task and greater oxygenation on both sides of the prefrontal cortex. In older males:• Cardiorespiratory fitness is not related to Stroop task performance nor prefrontal cortex oxygenation in overall older males.• Higher cardiorespiratory fitness was related to a better performance and greater right prefrontal cortex oxygenation during a Stroop task in 61+ years old group but not in 55-60 years old group, suggesting the importance of age-group classification to evaluate the effect of cardiorespiratory fitness on executive function in older male subjects.• Older males have stronger relationships between several vascular parameters and Stroop task performance than young malesThis work shows the relationship between physical activity and cardiorespiratory fitness on executive functions in young and older males. The potential neurophysiological mechanisms that underlie that relationship, especially prefrontal oxygenation and vascular health, are presented

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare the differences under different visual condition for dart-throwing. Methods: Twenty-one subjects voluntarily participated this study. In order to obtain throwers’ performance both in segmental motion and dart location, present study used high speed camera (100Hz) to collect data. The study adapted the repeated one-way ANOVA (α=.05) and qualitative analysis to compare the difference among three different visual condition. Results: The results showed that the dart location of binocular vision were more accuracy and stable than that of advantage vision. The throwing motion of binocular vision and monocular vision weren’t significantly different. The horizontal deviation of dart location of monocular vision was higher than that of binocular vision. The vertical deviation of dart location of monocular vision was also higher than that of binocular vision. Conclusion: The throwing motion of different visual constraint weren’t significantly different, but the information from monocular vision were harmful for judgment including horizontal and vertical direction of judgment. The accuracy and stable of dart location were affected by monocular vision.

Resumen
This chapter argues that neither in the theory of Hobbes nor of Rousseau is peace—in the sense of a condition in which the eventuality of war is excluded—possible within the international sphere. For both men the condition of peace presupposes a political order established and maintained by means of law. ‘Order’, ‘peace’, and ‘law’ are pivotal concepts in Hobbes’ and Rousseau’s philosophy of the state, yet there is no reference point for these concepts in their understanding of the international sphere—so the international sphere remains in a state of disorder. To deal with this disorder is not an international task but the task of national orders. The task of political philosophy, for Hobbes and Rousseau, is to elaborate the preconditions and fundaments of an order which is able to accomplish this task: as there is no international politics, international peace is a national responsibility.

Resumen
Ecocritique is a practice of radical questioning, as essential to the critical armoury as feminism and postcolonialism have become. Anecdotes are ecocritical because they focus on encounters, concentrated moments of crisis when social ordering and ecological forces clash. Bringing ecological criticism to bear on case studies of popular culture in the twenty-first century, Anecdotal Evidence argues that the humanities have a vital role to play in rethinking politics today. Treating contemporary Hollywood movies, streaming video media, and mass image databases as anecdotes about waste, debt, and obligation reveals the deep intertwining of history and ecology in culture. An original take on Anthropocene anxieties and technological paranoia, the book proposes that the digital humanities still need the traditional skills of close reading to understand our contemporary condition. Only because the environment has a history is it possible to intervene environmentally. Because we continually misrecognise the historical production of environments, the first task of ecocritique is to bring our formative concept of ecology into crisis. Its final task will be to achieve the good life for everything connected by the historical implication of humans in ecology, and ecology in humans. No politics can be undertaken in our times except through media: ecocritical humanities have a key role in rethinking ecopolitics in the twenty-first century.

Resumen
Spontaneous thoughts come in a large variety of different forms, varying in their experiential content as well as the functional outcomes with which they are associated. This chapter describes a component process architecture for spontaneous thought in which different types of experience arise through the combinations of different underlying neurocognitive processes. These underlying elements of cognition are not specific to spontaneous thought, since many, if not all, of these neurocognitive processes can be engaged when participants perform an externally directed task. We consider neurocognitive evidence that shows how this component process architecture provides explanatory value for accounts of spontaneous thought since it provides a mechanism that captures both the complex variety of spontaneous experiences that characterize the human condition, as well as the different functional outcomes that these different experiences are associated with.

Resumen
Mystagogical education of the teaching staff in the contemporary civilizatory metamorphose deals with the deep transformations which the civilization passes through, considering the sociological, environmental, political, economic and technological aspects. It deals with human being in this complex relationship analyzing the possible consequences of this process and, in the same way, it points alternative to a right assimilation and the convenience in this new world that rises up result of the metamorphosical process. The main indication remains in comprehending the adoption of mystagogical attitude by the teaching staff and in the formation of the educators. When the subject is the education task intending to overcome its utilitaristic function and preparation for the transactional environment, it suggests that the education points supportive and mystical alternatives in the teaching / learning. It proposes the cultivation and the preparation of the integrator people which teaching condition gets over the technical and the professional perspective, being firstly mystagogos (mystic educators) i.e, people teaching more with their lives and examples than words and contents. The text suggests that the educator’s task is to value the relationship between ourselves, others, the world and the supernatural. The searching points that more than technically prepared teachers, the mystic takes in account the human dimension considering all the potentiallities of the human being to develop himself under professional, intellectual, emotional, spiritual and social point of view.

Resumen
This chapter argues that gender dysphoria—a person suffering from an incongruence between experienced gender and assigned gender—is another illustration of the vulnerable duplicity inherent in the human condition. I am not merely the matter of which I am made. Rather, I am that matter plus the form that I impose upon it. In trying to shape my matter, I experience myself as an autonomous person and, simultaneously, as a person whose autonomy is limited by the matter itself. Between sex and gender there is the same relationship as between matter and form. We can shape the matter we are ‘thrown into’ and give it the form we desire, obviously within the boundaries delimited by matter itself and by our capacity for autonomy. Being the person that I am is a task and a responsibility that consists in becoming who I am through what I am.

Resumen
Human factors is the study of how interactions between organizations, tasks, and the individual worker impact human behaviour and affect systems performance. The importance of human factors in anaesthesia and critical care has been increasingly recognized, leading to its inclusion in the European-wide standards for patient safety in anaesthesiology within the Helsinki Declaration for Patient Safety in Anaesthesiology. ‘Person’ factors include permanent characteristics such as an individual’s personality and temporary influences such as physical condition, stress, morale, and workload. ‘Task’ factors include task complexity, preparation and checking, timing, equipment, and working environment. ‘Organization’ factors include communication, leadership, staffing levels, and organizational (safety) culture. While some of these features rely on the technical domain of anaesthetic/critical care practice, most are in the domain of ‘non-technical’ skills. This chapter reviews a number of these influences in detail and describes how non-technical aspects of practice can be encouraged and promoted. Simulation has been used as an educational tool in healthcare for some years, often with anaesthetists closely involved in establishing and running simulation centres and programmes. However, recent changes in medical education, coupled with public demands for increased patient safety, have brought simulation to the fore. This chapter reviews the classification of simulation systems and outlines the use of scenario-based and in situ simulation, before examining the evidence for its effectiveness. The authors emphasize that simulation provides a means for achieving an educational aim rather than being a technological end in its own right.

Manual for Surveillance of Events Supposedly Attributable to Vaccination or Immunization in the Region of the Americas. Pan American Health Organization, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.37774/9789275123867.

Resumen
One of the essential components of the safe vaccination system is the surveillance of events supposedly attributable to vaccination or immunization (ESAVI). This surveillance is aimed at early detection of any adverse events that may occur following immunization, in order to monitor and classify risks related to a vaccine, the manufacturing process, transportation, storage, administration, and any preexisting condition in the vaccinated person, and to rule out an association between the event and the vaccine. This manual has been adapted for the Region of the Americas from the Global Manual on Surveillance of Adverse Events Following Immunization, published by the World Health Organization in 2014. It provides a comprehensive technical review of all processes and procedures for applying and implementing high-quality ESAVI surveillance systems. It brings together the expertise of vaccine safety specialists from the Region and from around the world, experts from national immunization programs, national regulatory bodies, and other institutions that have developed relevant knowledge on surveillance of these events. It is hoped that this document will serve as a guide to provide national immunization program managers, pharmacovigilance officers of national regulatory authorities, and other institutions responsible for monitoring vaccine safety with tools to facilitate their task, enabling them to apply international standards to issues such as event detection, event investigation, causality assessment, management of ESAVI data, and risk communication.

Resumen
AbstractTask-oriented programming (top) is a new programming paradigm for specifying multi-user workflows. To reason formally about top programs, a formal language called TopHat has been designed, together with its operational semantics. For proving properties about task-oriented programs, it is desirable to know when two TopHat-programs are semantically equivalent. This paper aims to answer this question. We show that a task can be in either one of five conditions, and for every two tasks in the same condition, we define what it means for them to be semantically equivalent. Using this definition, we study a number of transformation laws for TopHat-programs, which can be used by developers and compilers to optimise top-programs. We show that the "Image missing" operation on types in TopHat is a functor but cannot be a monad. We support our findings with proofs formalised in the dependently typed programming language Idris.

Resumen
AbstractOff-shore wind energy technology is considered to be one of the most important renewable energy source in the 21st century towards reducing carbon emission and providing the electricity needed to power our cities. However, due to being installed away from the shore, ensuring availability and performing maintenance procedures could be an expensive and time consuming task. Condition Based Maintenance (CBM) could play an important role in enhancing the payback period on investment and avoiding unexpected failures that could reduce the available capacity and increase maintenance costs. Due to being at distance from the shore, it is difficult to transfer high frequency data in real time and because of this data transferring issue, only low frequency-average SCADA data (Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition) is available for condition monitoring. Another problem when monitoring wind energy is the massive variation in weather conditions (e.g. wind speed and direction), which could produce a wide range of operational alerts and warnings. This paper presents a novel case study of integrated event-based wind turbine alerts with time-based sensory data from the SCADA system to perform a condition monitoring strategy to categorise health conditions. The initial results presented in this paper, using vibration levels of the drive train, indicate that the suggested monitoring strategy could be implemented to develop an effective condition monitoring system.

Resumen
AbstractA peg-in-hole operation is representative of common tasks performed in assembly lines by robots. It requires registration of the coordinate frame where a part resides to the robot frame where it is acted upon. Poor registration causes misalignment of the peg and the hole which will result in a failed insertion of the peg. In this study, the dependence of the outcome of the insertion task on the quality of registration is investigated. It was shown in earlier studies that Restoring Rigid-Body Condition (RRBC) leads to decreased target registration error. This study quantifies the improvement in the Pass/Fail rate when the target registration error is reduced for a given peg-hole tolerance. A robot arm operated in position control mode was used to perform the insertion without performing any search algorithms or force/torque sensing. Results show that use of the RRBC method yielded substantial reduction in failed insertions, especially for tighter tolerances.

AbstractFor people with visual impairment, smartphone apps that use computer vision techniques to provide visual information have played important roles in supporting their daily lives. However, they can be used under a specific condition only. That is, only when the user knows where the object of interest is. In this paper, we first point out the fact mentioned above by categorizing the tasks that obtain visual information using computer vision techniques. Then, in looking for something as a representative task in a category, we argue suitable camera systems and rotation navigation methods. In the latter, we propose novel voice navigation methods. As a result of a user study comprised of seven people with visual impairment, we found that (1) a camera with a wide field of view such as an omnidirectional camera was preferred, and (2) users have different preferences in navigation methods.

Resumen
AbstractDisassembly is the first step in a remanufacturing process chain with unscrewing being usually the most frequent task. In previously reported research in the authors’ laboratory, a new method has been developed for using robots to unfasten screws. Uncertainties and variability in the physical condition of screws induced by dirt, rust, or mechanical damage pose difficulties for such robotised unscrewing systems. There are three common failure modes: screwdriver missing screw head, screwdriver slipping on screw head and screw too tight to remove. This paper presents strategies to handle these failure modes, making the developed robotised method more robust and reliable. The strategies include conducting a second search and second unfastening trial as well as involving collaboration with a human operator. Tests were carried out to validate the proposed strategies. The results show that the strategies could deal with the failure modes, enabling 100% successful operation.

Resumen
Introduction: With the rapid evolution of mobile devices, there is also a tremendous growth in their applications. This triggers new research on more efficient techniques of humancomputer interaction. To point at an object of interest seen on the screen of a mobile device, various new methods were suggested recently. Methods: This paper presents the results of a user study that employed tilting as a technique for entering text. The independent variables in the user study were mobility (sitting, walking, sitting in the moving bus) and keyboard size (5×3, 10×4). The experiment involved 50 participants aged from 22 to 65. Results: In the walking condition, it took on average 11.3% more time for participants to complete the task compared to the sitting condition with 5×3 keyboard, and 45.1% more time compared to the sitting condition with 10×4 keyboard. Keyboard size had a marked influence on task completion time. In addition, task completion time while traveling by bus was 3.2% longer than that observed for the walking condition with 5×3 keyboard. Surprisingly, task completion time with 10×4 keyboard while traveling by bus was 10.4% shorter compared to the walking condition. Error rate and movement efficiency were investigated additionally to find out the explanation for such performance data.

Resumen
With the rapid development of information society, the importance of knowledge work is increasing. Such knowledge work performance has been evaluated in various ways. The authors have developed and used CTR (Concentration Time Ratio), which is a performance evaluation index based on the ratio of time spent concentrating on a cognitive task for a total task conducted time. Although work concentration changes from moment to moment due to fatigue accumulation, distraction, and other factors, CTR ignored the time-series changes in performance while conducting the task.In this study, a new analysis method was applied to evaluate the effect of intermittent aroma stimuli on work performance, which was evaluated previously by CTR [1]. Totally 88 answering time data of the comparison task [2] that 22 participants performed 2 sets each in 2 conditions, with-aroma and without-aroma were included. Comparison task is a cognitive task developed to evaluate the workers’ intellectual concentration during conducting the task, which requires numerical and language processing, comparison and judgement [2]. Time series data of concentration were generated using the method used in our previous study [3]. In the with-aroma condition, aroma stimuli were presented for 10 seconds every 5 minutes. Therefore, the time window was decided to be relatively shorter to capture short-term temporal variation in concentration on task. We focused on the drop points of concentration. The drop points represent the timing at which the participants restarted concentrating and solving the cognitive task after slowing down due to fatigue accumulation or other factors while conducting the task. In other words, it is expected that there are more drop points when they were unable to maintain their concentration during the task time. When comparing sets conducted at the same time in two aroma conditions, in the group in which the average concentration value improved in the with-aroma condition (n=26), the average number of drop points was higher in the without-aroma condition. On the other hand, in the group in which the average concentration value decreased in the with-aroma condition (n=18), the average number of drop points was higher in with-aroma condition. It was suggested that for the participants whose concentration were improved by the intermittent aroma-stimuli, the occurrence of drop points was suppressed in with-aroma condition.[1] Kimi Ueda, et al.: An Objective and Quantitative Evaluation of Intermittent Aroma Stimuli on Intellectual Concentration. Resumen
Nuclear Power Plants (NPP) have multiple levels of defense in depth hierarchy. The NPP accident condition operation strategy belongs to the 3rd level. It is used to supervise the operator to handle the NPP under accident operating condition. NPP accident condition operation strategy is an essential and difficult work in NPP design field, hence only few organizations are able to develop the accident operating strategies independently all over the world. In this paper, a systematic NPP accident operating condition strategy design methodology is raised based on function analysis and task analysis technology. Based on the methodology, a reactivity accident operation strategy is designed and proved to be reasonable through preliminary verification and validation work.

Resumen
Touchscreens are becoming commonplace in the modern-day vehicle, meaning they need to be accessible to all users, young or old. An experiment was conducted to understand the impact of age-related decline on touchscreen task performance when driving where users were asked to complete a simple touchscreen task in both a stationary (static) and moving (dynamic) condition. As expected, a significant decrease in task performance was found when comparing the static condition to a dynamic one. However, when analysing these two conditions by age, only the dynamic condition produced a significant decrease. A positive moderate correlation was also found in both conditions. This result has implications for the design of in-vehicle touchscreen systems to be inclusive of users of different ages and provides insight about the impact of when tasks are carried out in the vehicle.

Resumen
Understanding how each game element in isolation affects learners' motivation and contextual factors' moderator effects is needed to improve gamified interventions. Thus, this paper explored the impact of one of the most used game elements - Competition - on motivation and whether task-related contextual factors (e.g., familiarity with the task's subject) moderate that impact. In a within-subject quasi-experimental design, graduate students from an Artificial Intelligence course created a reflexive intelligent agent for a console-based fight simulator in a non-gamified condition. Then, they improved their agents to compete against their peers agents (gamified condition). Based on motivation levels measured in both conditions, we found that Competition was positive for students and that task-related contextual factors influenced that effect. Therefore, suggesting i) Competition alone can be positive for motivation and ii) contextual moderators should be considered in defining gamified designs.

Resumen
Some manipulation tasks have directions of end-effector acceleration of a manipulator and directions for which dynamic accuracy is required in the motion. This paper proposes an index (DAIT: Dynamic Accuracy Index for Task-directions) that allows us to evaluate the dynamic accuracy of manipulators considering the task-directions. Firstly, we derive the DAIT. Secondly, we evaluate some postures of a 2-degrees of freedom (DOF) planar manipulator on the basis of some indices that have been proposed (condition number, dynamic manipulability measure and task compatibility) and the DAIT, respectively. Thirdly, we show a manipulator’s design example based on the DAIT. Finally, from the evaluation and design results, we discuss the usefulness of the DAIT in determining the suitable postures of the manipulator for a given task and in designing the suitable manipulators for a given task.

Röschel, Linda y Barbara Neumann. Summary report on Workshop 1 on governance for ocean-based negative emissions technologies. OceanNETs, junio de 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.3289/oceannets_d2.3.

Texto completo
Resumen
Research undertaken in Task 2.2 identified a range of governance challenges to ocean-based NETs related to the global ocean governance framework, e.g., linked to the transboundary nature of the ocean, potential effects of ocean-based NETs on the ocean’s condition and marine ecosystem services, as well as the many unknowns and uncertainties linked to NET-deployment. The fragmented approaches and frameworks in place to govern the global ocean further complicate comprehensive governance of these emerging technologies. This deliverable presents results from a workshop that explored how oceanbased NETs should be governed to best confront these challenges and integrate international climate targets as well as global goals for ocean and biodiversity conservation, in addition to global ambitions towards sustainable development. The workshop is part of research undertaken by Task 2.2 to assess how ocean-based NETs are addressed by the current global ocean governance framework and develop governance scenarios and recommendations to policy makers for a “good governance” of NETs in the ocean.

Resumen
Review question / Objective: The European Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy and the United States Multi-Society Task Force recommends the use of old snare polypectomy (CSP) for < 10 mm polyps. However, recent randomized clinical trials (RCTs) showed some conflicting results in cold forceps technique including cold forceps polypectomy (CFP) and jumbo forceps polypectomy (JFP) compared with CSP in diminutive colorectal polyps (DCPs) (≤5mm), especially in 1-3mm polyps. Condition being studied: Current studies have some conflicting results in the cold forceps technique vs cold snare technique for diminutive colorectal polyps (≤5mm). This is the first systematic review and meta-analysis comparing the cold forceps technique with the cold snare technique in 1-5mm polyps. We evaluated these two techniques in terms of complete resection rate, mean polypectomy time, rate of retrieved polyps, and complication.

Resumen
This manual presents best practices on project selection, mix design, and construction to ensure a superior product when constructing thin asphalt overlays. Experience shows these treatments provide excellent performance when placed on pavements in fair to good condition using proper construction techniques. Though sometime referred to by other names, thin asphalt overlays have been widely used for pavement preservation throughout the world for over 50 years. Limited infrastructure funding at the local, state, and federal levels has resulted in greater emphasis on the use of pavement preservation techniques to extend pavement life and reduce maintenance costs. Thin asphalt overlays are one of many preventative maintenance treatments. Thin asphalt overlays are placed directly on existing pavement and can range from 1/2 inch to 1 1/2 inches in thickness. Thin asphalt overlays have proven to be an economical means for maintaining and improving the functional condition of an existing pavement since the 1960s. Specifically, this manual provides guidance for engineers regarding where and when to use thin asphalt overlays including: (1) Types and variations of thin overlays; (2) Materials and the design process; (3) Construction; (4) Quality Assurance; and (5) Troubleshooting. This chapter by chapter guidance enables an Agency’s engineers to design and construct a successful thin asphalt overlay project to completion. This manual is one of four new manuals prepared by the California Pavement Preservation Center (CP2Center) using funding from California Senate Bill 1 (SB-1), passed in April 2017. The other three manuals provide detailed design and construction information for (1) chip seals, (2) slurry surfacing, and (3) Cape seals. The creation of these manuals was a task funded entirely from SB-1 monies for the purpose of disseminating training and technical information on highway pavement preservation to local agencies throughout California.

Resumen
The purpose of this text or dissertation is to throw some basic light on a fundamental problem concerning manhood, namely the question of evil, its main sources, dynamics and importance for human attitudes and behaviour. The perspective behind the analysis itself is that of psychology. Somebody, or many, may feel at bit nervous by the word “evil” itself. It may very well be seen as too connected to religion, myth and even superstition. Yet those who are motivated to lose oneself in the subject retain a deep interest in human destructiveness, malevolence and hate, significant themes pointing at threatening prospects for mankind. The text is organized or divided into four main ordinary chapters, the three first of them organized or divided into continuous and numbered sections. A crucial point or question is of cause how to define evil itself. It can of cause be done both intentional, instrumental and by consequence. Other theorists however have stated that the concept of evil exclusively rests on a myth originated in the Judean-Christian conception of Satan and ultimate evil. This last argument presupposes evil itself as non-existent in the real rational world. It seems however a fact that most people attach certain basic meaning to the concept, mainly that it represents ultimately bad and terrible actions and behaviour directed toward common people for the purpose of bringing upon them ultimate pain and suffer. However, there is no room for essentialism here, meaning that we simply can look “inside” some original matter to get to know what it “really” is. Rather, a phenomenon gets its identity from the constituted meaning operating within a certain human communities and contexts loaded with intentionality and inter-subjective meaning. As mentioned above, the concept of evil can be interpreted both instrumental and intentional, the first being the broadest of them. Here evil stands for behaviour and human deeds having terrifying or fatal consequences for subjects and people or in general, regardless of the intentions behind. The intentional interpretation however, links the concept to certain predispositions, characteristics and even strong motives in subjects, groups and sometimes political systems and nations. I will keep in mind and clear the way for both these perspectives for the discussion in prospect. This essay represents a psychological perspective on evil, but makes it clear that a more or less complete account of such a psychological view also should include a thorough understanding or integration of some basic social and even biological assumptions. However, I consider a social psychological position of significant importance, especially because in my opinion it represents some sort of coordination of knowledge and theoretical perspectives inherent in the subject or problem itself, the main task here being to integrate perspectives of a psychological as well as social and biological kind. Since humans are essential social creatures, the way itself to present knowledge concerning the human condition, must be social of some sort and kind, however not referring to some kind of reductionism where social models of explanation possess or holds monopoly. Social and social psychological perspectives itself represents parts of the whole matter regarding understanding and explanation of human evil. The fact that humans present, or has to represent themselves as humans among other humans, means that basically a social language is required both to explain and describe human manners and ways of being. This then truly represents its own way or, more correctly, level or standard of explanation, which makes social psychology some sort of significant, though not sufficient. More substantial, the vision itself of integrating different ontological and theoretical levels and objects of science for the purpose of manifesting or make real a full-fledged psychological perspective on evil, should be considered or characterized a meta-psychological perspective. The text is partially constructed as a review of existing theories and theorists concerning the matter of evil and logically associated themes such as violence, mass murder, genocide, antisocial behaviour in general, aggression, hate and cruelty. However, the demands of making a theoretical distinction between these themes, although connected, is stressed. Above all, an integral perspective combining different scientific disciplines is aimed at.
