ABSTRACT: During the 1960 campaign of the Corinth Excavations, a Tang Dynasty coin was found in an ash and charcoal layer with deposits from the mid- to late 13th century ce and earlier. Considering similar coin finds from the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, China, and the Chui Region, Kyrgyzstan, this article argues that the Corinth Tang coin is likely an Anxi Protectorate issue, though a Chui valley origin cannot be ruled out. This article discusses the origins, survival, and mobility of this minimal-value cash coin in a web of Eurasian connections, with particular focus on the connectivity of the Church of the East and the Jewish merchant network from the 8th to the 13th century ce.

Abstract Downsizing metal nanoparticle catalysts to form single-atom catalysts (SACs) has proven to be one of the best ways to enhance the catalysts’ activity and selectivity1-2 due to their unique characteristics such as nearly 100% atom utilization and well-defined active sites.3 However, the broad application of SACs in catalytic reactions is limited by their poor stability as they possess high surface energy and thus tend to aggregate and form nanoclusters or nanoparticles.4 To address this challenge, various supports such as metal oxides, carbon materials, and porous materials are widely used to stabilize the SACs.5 Metal organic frameworks (MOFs), a class of porous crystalline materials, have proven to be an ideal candidate to support SACs owing to their high surface area, high porosity, and abundant potential anchoring sites.6 It has been shown that immobilizing SACs on MOFs, which forms MOF supported SACs, can integrate the unique properties of SACs and MOFs and led to remarkable catalytic activity, selectivity, and stability toward various catalytic reactions.6-8 Application of MOF supported SACs in photocatalysis, organic linkers of metal-organic frameworks act as photosensitive units,9 However most pristine metal-organic frameworks possesses poor light absorption properties due to wide band gap.9To enhance the light harvesting properties of the metal organic framework its organic linker is functionalized.10-11 In my poster presentation, I will present my work where post-synthetic modification of UiO-66-NH2 MOF linker with 3,4,9,10 perylene tetracarboxylic dianhydride (PDA) an organic molecule with broad absorption edge,12and immobilization of Ni single atom catalyst on the zirconium cluster of the MOF was done. This resulted in enhanced optical properties and charge separation efficiency which was proved by a combination of UV-visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis), photoelectrochemical techniques, and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). Observed photophysical effects posed by the modifications of the UiO-66-NH2 were evaluated by photocatalytic hydrogen generation. In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), purgation is indicated when a person suffers an illness due to the accumulation of evil internal heat. Obese individuals with a large belly, red face, thick and yellow tongue fur, constipation, and avoidance of heat are thought accumulates of evil internal heat, and they are also treated with purgatives such asTa-Cheng-Chi-Tang(TCCT),Xiao-Chen-Chi-Tang(XCCT), andTiao-Wei-Chen-Chi-Tang(TWCCT) by TCM doctors. In previous studies, our group found that TCCT has potent anti-inflammatory activity, and that XCCT is an effective antioxidant. Since rhubarb is the principle herb in these three prescriptions, we will first present a thorough review of the literature on the demonstrated effect (or lack of effect) of rhubarb and rhubarb-containing polyherbal preparations on lipid and weight control. We will then continue our research with an investigation of the anti-obesity and lipid-lowering effect of TCCT, XCCT, TWCCT, and rhubarb extracts using two animal models. TWCCT lowered the serum triglyceride concentration as much as fenofibrate in Triton WR-1339-treated mice. Daily supplementation with XCCT and TWCCT significantly attenuated the high-fat-diet-induced hypercholesterolemia in rats. In addition, TWCCT also significantly lowered the high-fat-diet-induced hypertriglycemia. Although feeding high-fat diet rats with these extracts did not cause loose stools or diarrhea or other deleterious effects on renal or hepatic function. None of these extracts lowered the body weight of rats fed on high-fat diet. In conclusion, the results suggest that XCCT and TWCCT might exert beneficial effects in the treatment of hyperlipidemia.

Recent studies suggested that Traditional Chinese Medicine could play a beneficial role in conventional cancer treatment. The aim of this retrospective cohort study was to investigate the effect of Chinese herbal medicine (CHM) combined with Western medicine on the survival of patients with colorectal cancer. A retrospective cohort study was conducted on patients with newly diagnosed colorectal cancer identified from the Dalin Tzu Chi Hospital Cancer Registry Database in 2004–2014. Combining with the medical records of the study hospital, patients were classified into CHM users and CHM nonusers. Kaplan–Meier analyses and Cox proportional hazards regression analyses were used to investigate the survival between CHM users and CHM nonusers. A total of 535 patients with colorectal cancer were included in the study with 147 of them were CHM users. The log-rank test for Kaplan–Meier survival curve revealed a statistically significant difference between the survival of CHM users and CHM nonusers (P=0.006). Results from multivariate Cox regression analysis showed that CHM use was significantly associated with better survival (adjusted hazard ratio = 0.54, 95% CI = 0.38 to 0.77). In addition, the CHM formulae Jia Wei Xiao Yao San, Zhi Bah Di Huang Wan, Ping Wei San, and Qui Pi Tang were significantly associated with better survival. In conclusion, findings from this retrospective cohort study indicated that integrated CHM and Western medicine could improve survival in patients with colorectal cancer. Additional research on integrating TCM with Western medicine to improve cancer survival is warranted.

Background This retrospective cohort study investigated the risk of major bleeding events during the concurrent use of Chinese herbal medicine (CHM) and anticoagulants in clinical practice. Methods A total of 4,470 patients receiving anticoagulant drugs were selected from Taiwan’s National Health Insurance Research Database (NHIRD). Half (n = 2,235) were also using CHMs (CHM cohort); the other half were not (non-CHM cohort). Each cohort was matched 1:1 using the propensity score. Chi-square testing and the Student’s t-test were used to examine differences between two cohorts. Cox proportional hazard regression analysis assessed the risks for major bleeding events in each cohort, as well as bleeding risks associated with specific CHM formulas and herbs. Cumulative incidence curves for major bleeding events were calculated using Kaplan-Meier analysis. Results Compared with the non-CHM cohort, the CHM cohort had a lower risk of overall bleeding events (p < 0.001) including hemorrhagic stroke (p = 0.008), gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding (p < 0.001), urogenital bleeding (p ≤ 0.001) and nasal/ear/eye bleeding (p = 0.004). Single herbs, such as Glycyrrhiza uralensis et Rhizoma, Panax notoginseng, Panax ginseng, Platycodon grandiflorum, Eucommia ulmoides Oliver and formulas, such as Shu Jing Huo Xue Tang, Shao Yao Gan Cao Tang and Ji Sheng Shen Qi Wan were associated with a lower risk of major bleeding events. Conclusion Using CHMs with anticoagulants appeared to decrease the risk of major bleeding, especially CHMs products containing Glycyrrhiza uralensis et Rhizoma, Panax notoginseng, Panax ginseng, Platycodon grandiflorum and Eucommia ulmoides Oliver. Further investigations are needed to determine whether CHM can maintain the therapeutic efficacy of anticoagulants while simultaneously reducing potential side effects.

Aqueous manganese batteries based on deposition-dissolution of Mn2+/MnO2 reactions have aroused great attention due to their intrinsic low cost, high potential, and high energy.1, 2 However, the incomplete dissolution and exfoliated dead MnO2 would inevitably lead to capacity loss and poor cyclability at high areal capacity application.3, 4 Herein, we apply a redox mediator strategy to dissolve the accumulated MnO2 via a spontaneous chemical reaction between redox mediators iodide and MnO2.5,6 During the discharge process, the iodide (I–) could react with the residual MnO2 and be oxidized to I3 – that could be further reduced back to I– on the electrode, continuing this process until fully dissolved the accumulated MnO2. We will discuss detailed reaction mechanisms verified by ex-situ UV-vis spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction. The zinc-manganese (Zn-Mn) battery with iodide mediator showed improved cycling stability at 2.5 mAh cm–2 (400 vs. 100 cycles, static mode) and 15 mAh cm–2 (225 vs. 60 cycles, flow mode). Areal capacity is one of the most important parameters determining system energy for deposition-based batteries.7 The Zn-Mn flow cell could demonstrate a high areal capacity application at 50 mAh cm–2 for 50 cycles. We will discuss how to expand this strategy to other manganese-based batteries and broaden the horizon of aqueous batteries. Abstract Background: Clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) is one of the most prevalent urological carcinomas with a low overall 5-year survival rate, and its prognosis remains dismal. circular RNA (circRNA) has been discovered to be important regulators in ccRCC. However, the specific regulatory mechanisms of circRNA and its impact on phenotypes require further in-depth research. Methods: circRNA microarray sequencing analysis was used in this study to explore the expression pattern of circRNA in ccRCC. circWSB1 was discovered, and we evaluated its derivation, potential diagnostic efficacy, and prognostic significance in ccRCC tissues using reverse transcription quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) and sanger sequencing. Fluorescence in situ hybridization analysis (FISH), RNA immunoprecipitation, and dual-luciferase reporter gene assays were used to investigate the subcellular localization and regulation mechanism of circWSB1. In vivo and in vitro loss-of-function and gain-of-function experiments were used to determine the biological functions of circWSB1. Results: Through RNA sequencing of five pairs of tumor and adjacent tissues, we discovered that circWSB1 is highly expressed in ccRCC. We identified that circWSB1 interacts with miR-182-5p and upregulates the expression of its host gene, WSB1. Through models in vivo and in vitro, we found circWSB1 increases WSB1 expression via the circWSB1/miR-182-5p/WSB1 axis, which promotes ccRCC cell proliferation and migration. The high expression of circWSB1 and WSB1 is correlated with poorer clinical prognosis and pathological grading. Conclusions: circWSB1 diminishes the inhibitory impact of miR-182-5p on WSB1, and increases WSB1 expression, thereafter promotes ccRCC development. Our findings provide a promising predictive biomarker and therapeutic target for ccRCC. In einer innovativen transkulturellen, transdisziplinären und transtemporalen Perspektive setzt die Publikation den Akzent auf die Solo-Arbeiten von sieben zeitgenössischen Choreograph_innen, die in Deutschland, Frankreich, Taiwan, Martinique, Palästina und den USA leben, und Interpret_innen ihrer eigenen Stücke sind. Ausgehend von der Hypothese, dass Körper eine zentrale Rolle in der Aushandlung und Überwindung von Machtverhältnissen spielen, fragt die Forschung was geschehen kann, wenn tanzende Körper die Vergangenheit in die Gegenwart transportieren, im materiellen und im metaphorischen Sinne. Das als Spirale konzipierte Buch lädt zu einer Wanderung durch diasporische Tanz_schaften, in denen sich Fragestellungen zu Identität, Körperlichkeit, Zugehörigkeit, Räumlichkeit und Zeitlichkeit entfalten, und sich in der Diskussion von bestimmten Tanzsequenzen wechselseitig beleuchten. Die Doktorarbeit basiert auf den Ergebnissen einer vierjährigen internationalen Forschung. Die Quellen schöpfen aus unterschiedlichen Fachrichtungen, u.a. Gender und Queer Studies, Tanz/Performance, Kulturwissenschaften, Erinnerung, Postkoloniale Studien, Literatur, Quantenphysik, und Lyrik. The dissertation by L. Zuckerman (aka Layla Zami) explores the interrelations and interactions between memory, movement, diaspora, and spacetime in 21st century dance productions. In an innovative transcultural, transdisciplinary and transtemporal approach, the publication focuses on solo works by seven contemporary dancers-choreographers based in Germany, France, Taiwan, Martinique, Palestine and the USA. Contending that corporeality is a site and a source of power, the research asks what happens when moving bodies propel the past into the present, metaphorically and materially. The author introduces a new concept: (to) perforMemory, which is both a noun and a verb, and discusses the specificity of dance in the production and transmission of cultural memory in relation to historical trauma such as the Holocaust, the Transatlantic Slave Trade, Maafa, the Nakba and contemporary sociopolitical challenges. Conceived in a spiral-like fashion, the book takes the reader through diasporic dancescapes in which notions of identity, home, embodiment, spatiality and temporality unfold and are brought into resonance with each other in the discussion of specific dance examples. The theoretical references connect such various fields as gender studies, dance and performance studies, cultural memory studies, postcolonial studies, literature, quantum physics, queer studies and poetry. Based on doctoral research conducted across the globe from 2013 to 2017, the electronic publication also features the full interview transcripts of personal conversations recorded by the author with the artists Oxana Chi, Zufit Simon, Wan-Chao Chang, André M. Zachery, Farah Saleh, Christiane Emmanuel and Chantal Loïal, as well as links to audiovisual performance excerpts.

Xin’s Tang-cai-zi-chuan, as a literature, has a special stance. More than a special biography of literati, its importance and value reveal through the combination of “biography” and “comments”. However, of the later scholars, most cite and focus on its contribution of preserving the historical data of Tang’s poets. That is biography. As for the “comments”, even if they cite them, they just cite segmentally and fragmentally. They seldom regard Xin’s viewpoint of Tang’s poems and poets in this book as a complete study subject. Therefore, the focus of this essay is doing a deep and complete research on the “poetry comments” of Tang-cai-zi-chuan. And then, it has to clarify the meanings of the “poetry comments”. The existence of Tang’s poetry is an inevitable historical phenomenon in the development of literature. However, when dealing with the numerous historical data, Xin, instead of taking in all of them, adds in his own viewpoint, the picture of Tang ‘s poetry and the viewpoint of literature revealed in the book although he focuses his comments on the existence of the history. That is, Xin intends to build a historical picture of Tang’s poetry after arranging the data. The portrayed contents include the selecting of literati, the choosing and rewriting of the data, and the commenting of the articles. In this process, the picture is built more or less on Xin’s own understanding, judgement and self-consciousness so that it carries his special characteristic. Xin’s historical picture and portrait make us know his historical viewpoint of Tang’s poetry and of poetry. And through the synchronic and historic picture of Tand-cai-zi-chuan, we can further see its meanings in times and speciality in the entire development of literature. The focus of this study is on the “poetry comments” of Tand-cai-zi-chuan, discussing the true contents and viewpoint of literature in its historical picture of Tang’s poetry.

Tamsui, having its own unique history, geographic and cultural contexts, was seen a scenic spot where had plentiful of rich drawing themes in the painters’ eye. After restoring, People have multiple explanations toward Taiwan landscape paintings no matter in the ways of cultural significance, styles, or characteristics. Therefore, this article hopes to compare the background, the styles, the materials, the painting techniques, and the painting theories of Liao Chi-Chun, Chang Wan- Chuan, Tsai In-Tang, Liao Te-Cheng, and Ho Chau-Chu by researching landscape paintings taking Tamsui as the theme. Meanwhile, preceding the discussion with theories as “art sociology”, “culture anthropology” and “iconology” and taking the paintings and the painters’ styles in the vein of social and cultural context into consideration to compare the special meaning of the five painters’ Tamsui art creation. This article not only investigates the reasons that made differences of the five painters’ styles, but also hopes to find a new orientation for the essence of art and historical value of Taiwan art- works after restoring. According to the analysis and generalization of this research refers to Liao Chi-Chun, Chang Wan- Chuan, Tsai In-Tang, Liao Te-Cheng,and Ho Chau-Chu’s Tamsui landscape paintings, the painters’ choices of themes about Tamsui, the display of drawing style and concepts have a great relevance with their personal learning experience and art thoughts. The Tamsui paintings recorded the changes of Taiwan landscape and also the painters’ style progress. However, observing the development of Taiwan landscape painting by researching the Tamsui subject is only a section; the researcher hopes that there will be more researchers involving in researching Taiwan landscape paintings to obtain more value and significance of the age.

In her chapter, Shields questions the categories of religion and poetry as she explores the classification of poems in an important yet still understudied Song anthology, the Wen cui (Literature’s Finest). By tracing the shifting conceptualizations of Daoism, Buddhism, and “religion” in the poems of “divine transcendence” (shenxian) in the early tenth-century anthology, she reveals that we may be hampered in understanding Tang Daoist poetry not only by our own modern categorizations, but also by dynamic changes in cultural and literary contexts that shaped the reception of Tang literature during the Song.

This chapter asks the question: Can women filmmakers, cinematic spectators, and televisual viewers speak from their doubly––sociopolitically and gendered––extraterritorialised position? It -historicises the theoretical discourse and film practice of the first phase (1968–78) of the Hong Kong New Wave from the perspectives of women filmmakers and critics. It also discusses three different ways by which women speak through the cinema and television as authors, all aiming to establish what Pier Paolo Pasolini (1922–75) would call a free indirect discourse. For independent filmmaker Tang Shu-hsuen, through unlearning Euro-American aesthetics and relearning medieval Chinese one from the perspective of modern women, a cinema specific to the extraterritorial position of a Hong Kong female spectator can be fostered. For screenwriter Joyce Chan and her collaborator director Patrick Tam, a free indirect discourse can only be achieved when the addresser-message-addressee mode of communication in commercial television is actively challenged. Finally, for director Ann Hui and screenwriter Shu Kei and Wong Chi, the classical Hollywood paradigm can be reconfigured to enable desubjectivised and abjectivised gay male characters to negotiate their traumas and desires in terms that are understandable by heterosexual and heteronormative viewers.

Advances in FX have enabled the evolution of SF cinema, ranging from the early experimentalism of George Méliès to the digital “synthespians” of contemporary CGI. Many breakthroughs in FX have occurred within the genre. Distinguished by bleach-bypass cinematography, Minority Reportwas the first film to have a fully digital production design and charted new ground. Spielberg consulted a group of experts in science and technology. He held a ‘Think Tank Summit’ in order to achieve a plausible futuristic setting; the result was a “2054 Bible” that screenwriters, art directors, and FX technicians used as a guidebook. The long road from story to screen took years. The screenplay went through several iterations while Spielberg tried to align his schedule with star Tom Cruise, whose box-office marketability enhanced the film’s monetary success. Minority Report was a critical success, too, symbolising another stage of Spielberg’s maturation, according to many reviewers.

When Turing arrived at Bletchley Park, the day after Chamberlain’s announcement of war with Germany, he joined Dilly Knox’s Research Section. The job of the Research Section was to study enemy ciphers and operating procedures, and to devise methods of attack. The techniques invented by this high-powered think-tank were then handed over to other sections where they were used operationally against the enemy traffic. In 1939, Enigma was the focus of research. By the time Tutte joined the Research Section, in mid-1941, Captain Gerry Morgan headed it. Tunny soon became the leading problem. Thanks to Tutte, the Research Section broke the Tunny machine in January 1942, and in July read up-to-date traffic for the first time. Tunny could now be tackled operationally, and a Tunny-breaking section was immediately set up under Major Ralph Tester. Several members of the Research Section moved over to the ‘Testery’. Armed with Turingery and other hand methods, the Testery read nearly every message from July to October 1942—thanks to the insecure 12-letter indicator system (see Chapter 3). In October, however, the 12-letter indicators were replaced by QEP numbers and the Testery, now completely reliant on depths, fell on leaner times (see Chapter 5). The Research Section renewed its efforts against Tunny, looking for a means of wheel setting that did not depend on depths. With the invention of Tutte’s method, Newman was given the job of developing the necessary machinery, and when the Heath Robinson was delivered in June 1943 the ‘Newmanry’ became a separate section. From December 1943 the Newmanry would be responsible for breaking and setting the chi-wheels, and the Testery for breaking and setting the remaining wheels manually. The two sections worked hand-in-glove. Initially Newman’s staff consisted of one cryptographer (Michie), two engineers, and 16 Wrens. Soon a second cryptographer arrived (Good), and after three months of experimentation, two or three messages were being set each week. ‘Cryptographers’, ‘engineers’, and ‘Wrens’ remained the principal staffing categories of the Newmanry throughout the war. By May 1945, there were 26 cryptographers, 28 engineers, and 273 Wrens. During the period June 1943 to July 1944, two Americans joined the cryptographic staff of the Newmanry.

The role of ship model tank testing in DoD ship construction programs has changed due to DoD policy and the advances made in hydronumeric modeling and simulation (M & S) computer codes. Performance improvements associated with innovative solutions need to be characterized in technical, schedule and cost areas in order to justify consideration. Computer simulations of system solutions performed early in the design cycle enable a wider range design space to be evaluated. Elements of steady flow and ship motions behavior have been successfully characterized with computer models. The validated range over which the performance of design concepts can be evaluated by computer models, however, is limited. The hydrodynamic performance risk associated with advanced hull forms developed for two surface ship programs has been handled using state of the art physical and computer modeling techniques. Hydronumeric computer codes using potential flow theory were used to develop the design concepts. The performance of the resulting concepts and the ability of the computer code to predict hydrodynamic behavior has been validated by physical model testing in this project. Water surface topological definition for the steady flow condition was obtained for ship models operating over a range of ship speeds. This data was obtained from towing tank experiments of candidate future surface-ship-hull forms conducted at the US Naval Academy and David Taylor Model Basin. These experiments included measurements of hull resistance, sinkage and trim, stern wave topology, and longitudinal and transverse wave cuts. The approach and results of the design process, the hydronumeric predictions used to develop the hydrodynamic designs, and ship model tests used to verify performance and increase the validated range of code predictions are presented. Details of the experimental procedures and data are provided. The test configuration, tank definition, model condition and other test conditions provide the code developers with an understanding of how the data was produced. Wave cut, free surface topology, model geometry, and test condition data will be provided on the DTMB Model 5415 web site when cleared for release.

La administración de la infraestructura de red y telecomunicaciones de la Universidad Francisco de Paula Santander seccional Cúcuta, es la labor realizada por el Centro de Servicios de Información (CSI). En base a un conjunto de problemáticas asociadas a tan importante labor, se planteó el diseño y desarrollo de una aplicación web que permitiera centralizar e integrar la información generada en los procesos de instalación, configuración, control, soporte y mantenimiento de los diferentes dispositivos de hardware, cableado estructurado e instalaciones con los que cuenta la universidad en su infraestructura de red, facilitando la toma de decisiones y optimizando la labor realizada por el personal del CSI. El desarrollo del producto de software se llevó a cabo bajo la metodología OpenUp, debido a que es un proceso unificado, iterativo e incremental; promueve la colaboración para alinear los intereses comunes, balancea las prioridades competitivas, se centra en la arquitectura minimizando los riesgos, y favorece la retroalimentación en busca de mejoras. La construcción de la aplicación se basó en tecnologías Open Source. Los desarrolladores hicieron uso del framework Laravel integrado con la herramienta CRUDBooster, MariaDB como Sistema de gestión de base de datos, y para la transición de la aplicación a la comunidad del CSI (despliegue en el entorno de producción) se implementó un servidor virtual en Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2).

Heat pump water heaters can cut electricity consumption, comparing with the conventional electric resistant water heating tanks by half. A conventional heat pump water heater (HPWH) requires a water circulating pump to sample water temperature every 15 minutes in the tank and to draw water to a condenser-water heat exchanger outside the tank, if water temperature is below the set point. The pump would be on at least once every 15 minutes, 24 hours a day. The novel design presented in this study was to insert the condenser coil through the opening on the top of the water tank. This design eliminated the need of the water circulating pumps, and thus greatly improved the reliability of the HPWH systems. Two types of condenser coil designs were considered; one was a bayonet tube (tube-in-tube) and one was the “U” tube. Previous test data indicated that “U” tube design performed better than the bayonet tube condenser coil, and thus only “U” tube condenser coil was considered in the study. With straight “U” tubes inserted into the tank, it was found that the convective heat transfer was not strong enough to break water temperature stratification in the tank, which resulted in a temperature differential of 16°C (30°F) from top to bottom. However, when the coil was built in “L” shape, the water stratification disappeared. A computational fluid dynamics code, CFD, was used to study the straight and L shaped condenser coils. Results from CFD simulation were compared with the experimental data and found they were close to each other.

Abstract An assessment was conducted to showcase different innovative strategies and operating practices to tackle the increasing water cut and tight emulsion at one of the upstream Gas Oil Separation Plant (GOSP) at low to no cost. Also, this innovative strategy will reduce the crude carbon intensity and the operating margin. The assessment is intended to evaluate the existing treatment process of formation water that is produced in GOSP. The current practice is to recycle the produced formation water from desalter plant to degassing tank. This practice causes the degassing tank to handle excessive formation water while the degassing tank is designed to separate the wet crude from the oil field into three phases that are oil, gas, and formation water. The assessment proved that the recycling of the formation water from dehydrator to degassing tanks is adversely impacting the plant operation in which there will be less time retention of inlet wet crude. Therefore, the outlet crude does not achieve the allowable time to get rid of the water droplet to be associated with the crude formation and cause impact on the degassing tank's downstream. In addition to that, recycling formation water will require more draw off pumps that are responsible to transfer the accumulated formation water in the degassing tank that results in an increase in the operation and capital cost to facilitate the new equipment. In addition, the assessment analyzed the sample of oil-in-water content samples that are taken from the discharge header of formation water from degassing tank and desalter plant. It shows high oil-in-water content at the discharge header of formation water from the degassing tank compared to the formation water header from desalter plant. In addition, several proposal solutions were raised in which they support the process separation and improve the Gas Oil Separation Plant performance such as Fixed high operating temperature at Dehydrator of 150 F that lower the viscosity and enhance the separation compared to lower operating temperature at the Low Pressure Degassing Tank (LPDT) from 70 to 100 F. This increment of temperature will improve the oily water separation and reduce the emulsion that does begin to form inside the tank. Also, using the combined electrostatic and gravity separation in dehydrators is much better than gravity separation alone at LPDT. Moreover, optimum demulsifier dosage enhances oily water separation in the dehydrator at high temperature compared to low temperature at the LPDT. Water separation at the dehydrator can be further improved by the selection of a proper demulsifier that can improve the oily water separation while meeting the crude Basic Sediment & Water (BS&W) and salt content. The assessment proposes to utilize the formation water line that is connecting the desalter plant with the utility plant in which the produced formation water can be transferred directly to the utility plant and avoid sending the huge quantity of the formation water back to the degassing tank. Finally, it is recommended to closely monitor the interface level of dehydrator and desalter vessels in the desalter plant to ensure the quality of produced formation water.

Since the introduction of hydrofoils to the Moth sailing class in the early 2000’s foiling has become increasingly popular in sailing from windsurfers to large 75’ foiling monohulls. The last 3 America’s Cups have been competed on hydro foiling vessels. Design programs such as Velocity Prediction Programs (VPP) have become a key asset to America’s Cup teams to allow for the optimisation and testing of designs before manufacture. Presented is the development of a Six Degree-of-Freedom (6DoF) Quasi-Static Velocity Prediction Program (SVPP) and Dynamic Velocity Prediction Program (DVPP) for the 35th and 36th America's Cup foiling AC50 Catamaran and AC75 Monohull. The models have been validated against race data from the 35th and 36th America’s Cup showing good correlation for a wide wind range of 8 to 22 kn. The paper presents how the AC50 SVPP was used for analysis on the impact of Rudder Rake Differential (RRD) on overall performance, and predicting the optimal wind range for use of the light and heavy weather dagger boards on the AC50 Catamaran. The AC75 SVPP and DVPP were used to analyse the affect of hull shape and the main foils’ fixed angle-of-attack (AOA) on time-to-fight and peak velocity to determine optimal foil setup and pitch angle when foiling. The SVPP and DVPP use XFLR5 software suite to model the foils. Experimental data for a T-foil tested in the Australian Maritime College towing tank facility has been used to predict viscous and free surface effect adjustments to the predictions from XFLR5.

Abstract There has been an increasing interest in leveraging machine learning tools for chatter prediction and diagnosis in discrete manufacturing processes. Some of the most common features for studying chatter include traditional signal processing tools such as Fast Fourier Transform (FFT), Power Spectral Density (PSD), and the Auto-correlation Function (ACF). In this study, we use these tools in a supervised learning setting to identify chatter in accelerometer signals obtained from a turning experiment. The experiment is performed using four different tool overhang lengths with varying cutting speed and the depth of cut. We then examine the resulting signals and tag them as either chatter or chatter-free. The tagged signals are then used to train a classifier. The classification methods include the most common algorithms: Support Vector Machine (SVM), Logistic Regression (LR), Random Forest (RF), and Gradient Boost (GB). Our results show that features extracted from the Fourier spectrum are the most informative when training a classifier and testing on data from the same cutting configuration yielding accuracy as high as %96. However, the accuracy drops significantly when training and testing on two different configurations with different structural eigenfrequencies. Thus, we conclude that while these traditional features can be highly tuned to a certain process, their transfer learning ability is limited. We also compare our results against two other methods with rising popularity in the literature: Wavelet Packet Transform (WPT) and Ensemble Empirical Mode Decomposition (EEMD). The latter two methods, especially EEMD, show better transfer learning capabilities for our dataset.

Shock wave treatment of an apple can produce a soft apple similar to a sponge containing water. Therefore, without needing to cut and grate apples, apple juice can be easily obtained by squeezing by hand. In a previous result, it was reported that more than 40MPa shock pressure was needed to make a soft apple. From observation for the shock treatment for the apple, an oblique wave was produced from a detonating fuse and the wave reflected at the surface of the apple. The resulting shock wave data was obtained. In the result of further observations, there was the possibility that the wave passing through the apple was attenuated faster than the wave passing through water. In this report, the same method in the previous research was used. Apples, detonating fuse, and electric detonator were set in water tank, with the fuse initiated by electric detonator. In this research, the behavior of shock wave passing through an apple was researched as exploratory experiment for numerical analysis. In the future, we want to attempt to analyze the fluid-structure interaction between the apple and underwater shock wave by using computer finite element analysis.

Abstract Austenitic stainless steel SS304 is often used as the inner container of the Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) semitrailer tank. Due to excellent cryogenic ductility and strain-hardening effect, pre-strain of austenitic stainless steel is practicable and conducive to achieve lightweight design of this kind of transporting vehicle. In the present work, we focus on the cryogenic ratcheting of pre-strain austenitic stainless steel SS304. The SS304 specimens were cut from as received plates and butt welded plates which are all pre-strained 8% and 12%. With CARE electronic universal testing machine, ratcheting experiments are performed at both ambient temperature and 110K with different mean stresses and stress amplitudes. Ratcheting strains increase with the mean stress and stress amplitude under cryogenic temperature, but much smaller than that at ambient temperature. And it would quickly get shakedown after ratcheting in a few cycles due to the rapid γ-α′ phase transformation under cryogenic temperature. The cryogenic ratcheting strain generally reduces with the pre-strain amount for both parent material specimens and welded specimens. Compared with parent material specimens, weld specimens yield much smaller cryogenic ratcheting strain due to the hardening effect of welding induced initial ferrite with less slipping system.

In order to solve the problems that the paving car and the paving belt do not automatically reverse and the distribution car does not move when the tobacco leaf storage cabinet is fed, the storage cabinet feeding system is optimized and improved. firstly, the hardware of the storage tank feeding system is improved, the detection switch of deceleration bit and limit bit is added in the hardware, the speed reduction and limit detection switch are added in the hardware to adjust the speed and limit position of the paving car; Secondly, the program control of the storage cabinet feeding system is improved. Combined with the improved hardware detection switch, the feeding pre-self-inspection mode, time control mode and production control logic are optimized and designed. The feeding processes of tobacco leaf storage cabinet and tobacco cut storage cabinet in Shijiazhuang Cigarette Factory were tested, the results show that in the improved storage cabinet feeding system, the feeding failure rate is reduced by 83.7% because the proximity switch is not triggered, the number of times of the feeder car rushing out is reduced by 84.6% because the proximity switch is not triggered, and the storage cabinet is damaged for 0 times because the feeder car rushing out of the proximity switch. The technology can effectively solve the problems of paving car and the paving belt reversing and distribution car inching, reduce the failure of storage cabinet feeding system, and effectively improve production efficiency.

In early June 2021, representatives from a number of CNI member institutions gathered for the third in a series of Executive Roundtable discussions that began in spring 2020, during the early days of the COVID-19 emergency. The conversations were intended to inform our understanding of how the pandemic had impacted the research enterprise and to share information about how institutions were planning to shape investments and strategies surrounding the research enterprise going forward. Previous Roundtables were held in April and September 2020 and reports from those conversations are available from http://www.cni.org/tag/executive-roundtable-report. As with the earlier Roundtables on this topic, June participants primarily included senior library administrators, directors of research computing and information technology, and chief research officers from a variety of higher education institutions across the US and Canada; most participating member institutions were public universities with high research activity, though some mid-sized and private institutions participated as well. The June Roundtable took place in a single convening, supplemented by an additional conversation with a key institution unable to join the group meeting due to last-minute scheduling conflicts. As before, we urged participants to think about research broadly, encompassing the humanities, social sciences, and fieldwork activities, as well as the work that takes place in campus laboratories or facilities shared by broader research communities; indeed, the discussions occasionally considered adjacent areas such as the performing arts. The discussion was wide-ranging, including, but not limited to: the challenges involving undergraduate, graduate and international students; labs and core instrumentation; access to physical collections (libraries, museums, herbaria, etc.) and digital materials; patterns of impact on various disciplines and mitigation strategies; and institutional approaches to improving research resilience. We sensed a growing understanding and sensitivity to the human toll the pandemic has taken on the research community. There were several consistent themes throughout the Roundtable series, but shifts in assumptions, planning, and preparation have been evident as vaccination rates have increased and as organizations have grown somewhat more confident in their ability to sustain largely in-person operations by fall 2021. Still, uncertainties abound and considerable notes of tentativeness remain, and indeed, events subsequent to the Roundtable, such as the large-scale spread of the Delta variant of COVID-19 in the US, have eroded much of the confidence we heard in June 2021, though probably more around instructional strategies than the continuity of the research enterprise. The events of the past 18 months, combined with a growing series of climate change-driven disruptions, have infused a certain level of humility into institutional planning, and they continue to underscore the importance of approaches that emphasize resilience and flexibility.
