Resumen

Highway bridges play an important role in traffic construction; however, accidents caused by bridge construction occur frequently, resulting in significant loss of life and property. The identification of bridge construction scenes not only keeps track of the construction progress, but also enables real-time monitoring of the construction process and the timely detection of safety hazards. This paper proposes a deep learning method in artificial intelligence (AI) for identifying key construction scenes of highway bridges based on visual relationships. First, based on the analysis of bridge construction characteristics and construction process, five key construction scenes are selected. Then, by studying the underlying features of the five scenes, a construction scene identification feature information table is built, and construction scene identification rules are formulated. Afterward, a bridge key construction scene identification model (CSIN) is built; this model comprises target detection, visual relationship extraction, semantic conversion, scene information fusion, and identification results output. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed method is verified experimentally. The results show that the proposed method can effectively identify key construction scenes for highway bridges with an accuracy rate of 94%, and enable the remote intelligent monitoring of highway bridge construction processes to ensure that projects are carried out safely.

The aim of this paper is to provide an in-depth information of two pedestal tables (named Table du Sacre and Guéridon Mauresque) designed by Leloy, and kept in the royal collections of Patrimonio Nacional (National Heritage). Despite their differences, they both have some elements in common: not only Sèvres porcelain was used as their main decorative material offering painted historical scenes, but also both of them were gifts from French sovereigns to Spanish monarchs. The two pieces were also displayed in the 19th century at the Louvre Royale Manufactures Exhibitions as an example of the high quality that the Sèvres Manufacture achived. Although the Table du Sacre (table of coronation due to its iconography) is of great interest, the decoration of the Guéridon Mauresque is specially remarkable as it provides an interesting insight between courts. It depicts Boabdil leaving the Alhambra, being directly inspired by the Nasrid Palace (15th century): a piece of furniture depicting a scene of the Spanish Moorish past, was made in France and later offered as a gift to the regent of the Spanish Kingdom María Cristina de Borbón.

Resumen

Recently, Table Structure Recognition (TSR) task, aiming at identifying table structure into machine readable formats, has received increasing interest in the community. While impressive success, most single table component-based methods can not perform well on unregularized table cases distracted by not only complicated inner structure but also exterior capture distortion. In this paper, we raise it as Complex TSR problem, where the performance degeneration of existing methods is attributable to their inefficient component usage and redundant post-processing. To mitigate it, we shift our perspective from table component extraction towards the efficient multiple components leverage, which awaits further exploration in the field. Specifically, we propose a seminal method, termed GrabTab, equipped with newly proposed Component Deliberator, to handle various types of tables in a unified framework. Thanks to its progressive deliberation mechanism, our GrabTab can flexibly accommodate to most complex tables with reasonable components selected but without complicated post-processing involved. Quantitative experimental results on public benchmarks demonstrate that our method significantly outperforms the state-of-the-arts, especially under more challenging scenes.

Resumen

Abstract This article is written in response to Method Lab #2, reacting to and reading scenes from the theatre and the school classroom. We responded to ‘The table and the dancer’ by Carla J. Maier with drawings by Janna R. Wieland, and ‘The book and the authors reading’ by Elise v. Bernstorff and Carla J. Maier. Our responses are within the ontological turn and specifically posthuman studies and new material feminism(s). We move beyond representational thinking to explore vibrant matter and experiment with what more the text, scenes and pictures can become.

Resumen

The framework of our proposed for segmenting objects using spatial location information from stereo images. An efficient graph-based image segmentation algorithm within this framework for combining changes in optical features and physical location to segment reality scenes into perceptually and semantically uniform regions. Optical and physical location are extracted usingk-means clustering, and we propose a rules table for combining optical and spatial features together. The performance of our proposed framework is demonstrated in a series of reality-scene images using experimental data from the Middlebury stereo image data(http://vision.middlebury.edu/stereo/data/).

Resumen

This paper sets out to explore the relationship between excavated evidence of dining rooms and table utensils, and changing dining habits in Late Antiquity. In the first part the emphasis is on pictorial representations of dining scenes from the 5th and 6th c. A.D. The second part of the paper examines the archaeological evidence and its relationship to these scenes. On the basis of this evidence, it is not only possible to discuss in detail the architectural layout of the dining room together with its furniture and textiles, but also to give a description of the actual objects (in silver, metal, pottery, glass and in other materials) used on the dining table.

Resumen

Paolo Veronese's Marriage Feast at Cana (1562––62; Muséée du Louvre, Paris) reflects the dining experience of the Benedictine monks whose tables continued along the walls of the monastery's refectory as an extension of the painting. In effect, the monks shared the meal, becoming part of the miracle portrayed in Veronese's grand banquet. Moreover, the sumptuousness and decadence of late-sixteenth-century Venice, reflects the dining practices and sociability of the time. Feasting scenes, like the one depicted here, often did not emphasize food; rather, the focus was on the conspicuous display of material goods for which the Venetians were famous. The opulence of the environment, the table settings, and service rival the sumptuous dress of the wedding guests.

Resumen

This article is the first publication, description, and identification of the floor mosaics in the north aisle of the early fifth-century synagogue in the village of Huqoq in Lower Eastern Galilee. The north aisle is arranged in individually framed panels organized in two superposed rows of nine panels each for a total of eighteen. While many are only fragmentarily preserved, each panel seems to have depicted a figure or episode from the Hebrew Bible (aside from a Hebrew-language donor inscription at the east end of the aisle). Aided by labels in Hebrew or Aramaic citing phrases from biblical verses as well as by the regularity of the overall design of the north aisle, we have been able to identify the subject matter of eight of the eighteen panels and to propose reconstructions for three others. Most significant—and surprising—among the scenes are two groups of four panels that depict episodes from the book of Daniel: the four beasts of Daniel 7 and the story of the three youths in Daniel 3. These multipanel scenes, which were placed at the west and east ends of the aisle respectively, frame the composition as a whole. Other extant panels depict a male youth leading a leashed wild animal (Isa 11.6), two spies returning with grapes from the Valley of Eshcol (Num 13.23), and the showbread table from the tabernacle (Lev 24.6). We situate the visual strategies employed in the north aisle mosaic within the development of biblical narration across a wide range of contemporaneous media. We argue that the Huqoq panels not only participated in Mediterranean-wide practices for the representation of narrative in the visual arts but also make an important contribution to our understanding of the dynamic nature of artistic exchange across the boundaries of media in Late Antiquity. Moreover, the panels provide precious evidence regarding the religious outlook, cultural orientation, and social position of the synagogue community at Huqoq. In particular, the panels depicting scenes from the book of Daniel emphasize both the threat posed by “foreign” empires to the people of Israel and their ultimate defeat at the hands of God and his warriors. This theme is likewise present in the nave and east aisle of the synagogue, especially in the Samson panels, the Crossing of the Red Sea, and the Elephant Mosaic. We suggest that these panels, taken together, celebrate Jewish heroic and even martial values that were themselves very much in keeping with the emerging ethos of imperial Christianity in the Theodosian age.

In this autoethnographic article, I argue that the recent and trending new materialist focus within composition studies—which tends to assume the privilege of agency and unmitigated choice on behalf of writers regarding their writing environments (Prior and Shipka, 2002; Alexis, 2016)—doesn’t necessarily hold space for writers whose writing environments regularly yield to and are shaped by the preferences, habits, and material effects of actors outside of themselves—namely, their children. In making my argument about the particular effects of such mutliagent writing environments, I use a materialist lens to reveal and analyze my own and other single mother graduate student writers’ (SMGSWs) scenes of writing, hoping to invite reflection on what assumptions we may hold about the writing environments of our students, our colleagues, and ourselves.

L’objectif de cette thèse est de comparer le rapport que deux cultures (Chine /France) entretiennent avec le plaisir gustatif, à travers l’histoire de leurs pratiques alimentaires, la philosophie qui les supporte et les représentations qui en sont données dans la littérature. Cette confrontation culturelle s’appuiera particulièrement sur les scènes de table présentes dans un roman chinois de la fin du XVIIIe siècle (Cao Xuequin) et plusieurs romans français du début du XIXe siècle (Balzac). L’approche comparatiste nous permet d’envisager notre objet à travers un cadre conceptuel commun (« le vide et le plein ») et de voir comment il construit des pratiques et des représentations sociales, un imaginaire personnel à l’auteur, des pratiques d’écriture et finalement l’esprit d’une époque. Le plaisir de la table nous conduit des mets aux mots, et de la satisfaction gustative aux valeurs esthétiques de deux civilisations et deux cultures dont nous marquerons les divergences et dont nous soulignerons les harmonies
The objective of this thesis is to compare the relationship that two cultures (China / France) have with pleasure of taste, through the history of their eating practices, the philosophy that supports them and the representations that are given in the literature. This cultural confrontation will be particularly based on the table scenes present in a Chinese novel from the end of the 18th century (Cao Xuequin) and several French novels from the beginning of the 19th century (Balzac). The comparative approach allows us to consider our object through a common conceptual framework (“deficiency and excess”) and to see how it constructs social practices and representations, a personal imagination for the author, practices of writing and finally the spirit of an era. The pleasure of the table leads us from the dishes to the words, and from the gustatory satisfaction to the aesthetic values of two civilizations and two cultures whose divergences we will mark and whose harmonies we will underline

In Belgium, approximately 75 homicides a year go unnoticed. In addition it is estimated that 5 - 10% of the so-called natural deaths are not natural at all. This amounts to 5,000 – 10,000 deaths a year with an incorrect cause of death. Both Belgium – composed of three regions, three communities, and ten provinces – and the United States of America – divided into 50 states – are overseen by a Federal Government, and their police system consist of multiple law enforcement agencies. When looking from a distance, more similarities than differences are seen for the organization of law enforcement agencies. However, differences become apparent when analyzing the responsibilities of the different agencies during crime scene processing and evidence collection. Seen the scope of the forensic science program, the focus will more specifically be on the process, procedures, and actors involved. The goal of this thesis is to (a) analyze the Belgian and U.S. crime scene investigation system, (b) compare the two systems to one another, (c) discuss the weaknesses and strengths behind each system, and finally (d) come up with recommendations. Existing issues will also be evaluated and their impact will be discussed. To achieve the above mentioned goals, information was obtained through literature review and interviews with experts. During the interviews information (e.g. books), not available to the general public, was obtained. Crime scene investigation, for both the U.S. and Belgian system, can be divided into 5 different steps: the initial notification, the first response team, the investigation of the crime scene (documenting, collecting, and processing evidence), the analysis of collected evidence, and the autopsy. In both systems, first responders and emergency medical services will be the first actors present at the scene. Although most procedures and actors involved in the investigation of a crime scene are similar between the United States of America and Belgium, some differences cannot be overlooked. These differences are: the person in charge of completing the death certificate, determining whether or not jurisdiction is accepted, the educational background and composition of the crime scene team, the investigation of the deceased, the requirements needed to become a forensic pathologist, and the cases in which an autopsy is systematically performed. Comparing both crime scene investigation systems showed that each system has its own strengths, weaknesses, and issues. The comparison also showed that both systems can learn from one another, since the combination of already existing processes and procedures, from both crime scene investigation systems, was used to create an “ideal” crime scene investigation system.

Title: “I hope to be your uterus” - A multimodal analysis on surrogacy in scenes from The Handmaid’s tale and Friends Surrogacy is a widely discussed subject both internationally and in Sweden. The opinions on whether it should be legalized or not differ from country to country, which is reflected in how they implement their different laws on the subject. The main issues in the debates about surrogacy is whether a legalization of altruistic surrogacy would lead to safe methods within the medical care and stop the expansion of illegal markets or if there’s risks of opening the doors to a bigger commercial market. Parallel to the political discussion and opinions on the subject, the portrayal of surrogacy has appeared within popular culture, as in TV-series, for a period of time. It can be found in different genres like drama and comedy since the 90s, which makes the subject interesting to observe. The purpose of this essay is to study how the topic of surrogacy is portrayed in two different genres in the TV-series Friends and The Handmaid’s tale. For this purpose we use multimodal analysis to answer if there are similarities and/or differences in the portrayal of surrogacy within our research material. The theoretical framework is based on Richard Dyers theories on stereotypes, Carol Patemans ideas of ‘the sexual contract’ and Brooke Weihe Edges studies on the representation of women in different movie genres amongst others. Our study shows that even if the genres vary there are stereotypical structures in how both infertile women and surrogate mothers are presented to the audience.

It is now a half-century since most countries on the African continent saw the end of colonial rule. The first sustained scholarly attention to decolonization was authored largely by social scientists in the 1950s, who focused on ruling elites, party politics, constitutional development, and the transfer of power. Their successors, in the 1960s–1970s, brought new interpretive tools to the study of decolonization, including dependency theory, in order to make sense of the contemporary realities of political instability and economic underdevelopment. Since the 1980s, historians have brought the insights of women’s history, labour history, and social history to the table in order to demonstrate that nationalist scripts were often written ‘from below’. More recently, a focus on political imagination and political cultures, as well as the utilization of comparative and transnational approaches, has worked to free decolonization from its moorings as either the triumphal ‘end’ of colonial history or the opening scene in a postcolonial tale of ‘what went wrong’.

Resumen

AbstractTactile sharing with others facilitates improving communications and augmenting cooperative tasks. An increase of persons sharing tactile sensations increases the effectiveness whereas the area of tactile stimuli given should be investigated for intuitive perception. This study investigated the effect of spatial correspondence between tactile and visual stimuli in identifying tactile stimuli. In the experiment, participants viewed simultaneously two videos of other agents’ hands each rubbing one of three textures and felt their vibrotactile stimuli in two locations. The videos were presented at different locations on the screen (Scene 1$$:$$ : left-right side or Scene 2 & 3$$:$$ : top-bottom) and the vibrotactile stimuli were presented either at the wrists of the left and right hand (Scene 1) or at the upper arm and the wrist of the right arm which either rested on the table (Scene 2) or was hanging down along the body (Scene 3). For each scene, visual and tactile stimuli were either spatially aligned (left and right video with tactile stimuli at the left and right wrist, and top and bottom video with top and bottom location on the right arm) or not. The result showed shorter response times for left-right spatial correspondence and for far (top) and close (bottom) visual stimuli corresponding to distal (wrist) and proximal (upper arm) locations on the body. This implied that the body schematic is an important factor for spatial compatibility of visual and tactile stimuli.

Floor 26 of Ho King Commercial Centre in Yau Ma Tei, the elevator stops. At the end of the corridor, the sound of a heavy metal band, detuned screams buffered by the cracked plywood door of a tiny music studio. Outdated factory buildings in Kwun Tong, industrial architecture gradually surrounded by new commercial and residential complexes; their precarious wait for urban renewal has offered an opportunity for young musicians to establish music studios, classrooms, or improvised bedrooms where music and teenage discoveries mingle with the noise of machinery. A rusty anonymous intercom partially hidden by some plastic ivies. Past the door, a narrow metallic staircase, source of random encounters and only access point to a one-off experience; hundreds of people—local and foreigners—gathered in a tiny dark room, a miscellany of sweat, smoke, voices, and distant music. The hidden networks formed by musicians scattered in unexpected venues around Hong Kong provide a sonic collage that reformulates some of the city’s social peripheries from within. Through emergent sub-cultures, young artists deploy a wide range of tactics to counter the commodification and politicization of creativity, and the speculation over space in order to achieve new opportunities in a “bureaucratic society of controlled consumption.” In his work on everyday life, which focuses on the resistance of (extra)ordinary people to structures of power, Michel de Certeau makes reference to the idea of “silent discoverers of their own paths in the jungle of functionalist rationality.” The main actors of this essay, despite feeding on and actively participating in Hong Kong’s consumerism dynamics by taking references from social media, e-commerce, or shopping malls, produce “wandering lines”—or wandering sounds—with their own (syn)tactics through their artistic practices. Notably, in Hong Kong’s reductionist bureaucratic system, with a strong predominance of statistics and evaluation focused on “classifying, calculating and putting into tables,” these artistic rituals and reinterpretations of the city’s culture often remain overlooked or hidden to the system.

Resumen

Nintama Rantaro is a long running TV anime series in Japan, which is produced by a large number of staff members. In the present study, 228 episodes of this series were selected to analyze the relationships among the staff members and the elements in the episodes, using correspondence analysis and cluster analysis. Numbers of storyboard writers, animation directors, screenplay writers and directors, and factors of the stories, e.g., representative expressions, motions of the main characters and emotions of the main characters, were counted, and a cross-tabulation table was constructed. The results of the correspondence analysis of the table showed that a three-dimensional space illustrated the correlations in the table with the cumulative contribution ratio of 42 %. The results of the cluster analysis with Ward’s method showed four clusters. Each of the four clusters coincided to each quadrant on the plane spanned by the first two dimensions. In the first quadrant, an animation director Tsuyoshi Ichiki was plotted. In the same quadrant, fighting motions of the main characters were plotted. Tsuyoshi Ichiki is one of the most proficient anime directors for battle scenes. Therefore, this indicates that the animation of episodes which includes battle scenes is chiefly directed by Tsuyoshi Ichiki in Nintama Rantaro. In the second quadrant, experienced animation directors, Emiko Niiyama and Kazue Tamari were plotted as well as a screenplay writer, Mitsuharu Yoshida who frequently writes the screenplay for the initial episode of a season. Moreover, characteristic expressions in Nitama Rantaro, such as the escape of the soul from the body, use a regional dialect “bayai” instead of “baai”, and the appearance of a character with breaking the screen, were plotted in this quadrant. This implies that the experienced animation directors and the screenplay writer use characteristic expressions especially for the initial episode of a season. In the third quadrant, an animation director Setsuko Shibuichi, who previously directed animations with sad stories, was plotted. The sad emotion of a main character is also plotted in the same quadrant. This indicates that for a sad episode, Setsuko Shibuichi directed the animation. In the fourth quadrant, screenplay writers, Satoshi Kimura and Kazuko Iwasaki are plotted as well as an animation director, Yasuhiro Endo, and various directions of motions of the characters are also plotted. This means that they are proficient dynamic motions of characters. In this way, the relationships among the staff members and the elements of the anime episodes are clarified in the context of Nintama Rantaro.

Resumen

The analysis of realistic rendering methods from the point of view of the efficiency of calculation of secondary and caustic illumination is carried out. A method of bidirectional stochastic ray tracing using photonic maps is proposed, which ensures high efficiency of calculation of caustic illumination. The main approaches of using the photon maps method are considered: the construction of photon maps on the traces of forward rays and on the traces of backward rays. The advantages and disadvantages of these methods are revealed. The method of bidirectional stochastic ray tracing using backward photon maps is chosen as the basic solution. Profiling of this solution was carried out based on the Lumicept software package. The main problems associated with slowing down the rendering process have been identified. For most scenes, half of the rendering time was spent processing requests to the photon map: searching for nearby photons within the cell of the spatial structure and searching for the intersection of the ray with the integrating photon spheres. Several solutions for spatial partitioning of photonic maps were analyzed: a regular mesh, a regular mesh with a hash table and a binary tree. The advantages and disadvantages of the solutions under consideration are revealed and a combined solution is proposed that combines the adaptability of splitting a binary tree and the access efficiency provided by hash tables. A combined solution has been implemented in the Lumicept software package, which will increase the overall rendering efficiency by 30%.

Architects create images and representations of buildings to communicate construction and fabrication information. Construction necessitates utilizing mediating technologies to compress and communicate design information about material organization across space and time.1 Successful architectural design images embed material and construction knowledge needed to translate an idea into material. Whether joint lines in hand-drafted elevations imagining stone blocks or walls in a Revit model with embedded construction layers, the images architects produce for building require knowledge of complex material construction cultures and an idea of construction’s aesthetic implication. Images of this sort maintain the professional and disciplinary position of the architect as an organizer of the materials, processes, and labor needed to actualize building in the contingencies of the physical world. Artificial intelligence, especially text-to-image generation platforms, enables the rapid creation of images depicting forms, scenes, and objects with an unprecedented speed and a no-table absence of embedded knowledge from the architect. The rapidly emerging capacity of AI posits a unique and changing role for the architect in the design and construction process. AI allows anyone to generate compelling images with high resolution and photorealism. However, current AI-generated images lack embedded knowledge related to construction, often featuring illogical or impractical material connections or assemblies. This project researches how architects can execute material connections as depicted by undisciplined artificial intelligence and explores how apparent failures or errors in AI-generated material connections can challenge and expand the tectonic boundaries of architectural thinking.

Resumen

To strengthen the seismic intensity and differentiate adaptations to earthquakes in Taiwan, the Central Weather Bureau of the Ministry of Transportation and Communications subdivided the original seismic intensity of 5 Strong and 6 Violent earthquakes of the Seismic Intensity Scale into 5 Lower and 5 Upper, 6 Lower and 6 Upper respectively in 2020.First, we collected 28 infographics from domestic and overseas governmental and private institutions and stock image websites using earthquake intensity as the keyword. Three researchers with design backgrounds classified the infographics into three kinds of types for experimentation: 1) a single-color gradient (semi-circular car dashboard) with an illustration of a cabinet or a house; 2) a 3D geometry (horseshoe type) with illustrations of people and scenes inside and outside the house; 3) a traditional table (horizontal type) with an illustration of a house. The text descriptions of the three infographics were the same. Sixteen respondents (10 of whom had 5-year design background) read through the three infographics sequentially and did a 7-Point Likert Scale Questionnaire. The questions included design form (format, logic, and clarity of information), perception and understanding (distinguishing seismic hazards, perceiving intensity differences, and rapid understanding), risk perception, and personal preference. Finally, semi-structured interviews were to gain a deeper understanding of what factors influence readers' priorities in reading the earthquake intensity infographics.This study found that: 1) a semi-circle speed gauge with one color gradient using light to dark orange had the highest perception and understanding score (mean = 5.19); 2) 3D geometry with horseshoe shape with illustrations and information richness had the highest design form score (mean = 5.13) and highest personal preference ranking; 3) formatting tables with stereotypical image and only one house illustration could not determine the difference had the lowest design form score (mean = 4.65) and lowest perception and understanding score (mean = 4.93) and lowest personal preference ranking. The lowest scores for design form (mean = 4.65), perception and understanding (mean = 4.93), and personal preference were the lowest. In addition, 80% of the respondents were concerned about earthquakes and prepared for them, but more than half would not evacuate quickly during an earthquake. Suggestions for the future are that the earthquake infographics could use color gradients and 3D geometry so that the public can differentiate the danger in different intensity scales.

Key Enabled Technologies(KETs) have the potential to impact on many aspects of society, whilst transforming European industrial competitiveness at the local, national, and global scales. Studies funded by the European Commission have shown that European advances in six technology areas would not only enhance the leadership and competitiveness of European business, but also drive advances across Europe’s business sectors and society. Despite their applicability across sectors, KETs represent a change, and a new manner of moving forward. Business and society view change both positively, welcoming advances in technology and new tools and products to make life somewhat easier for citizens, and negatively, recognising that with change comes risk and a reticence to change. Like society, different industrial sectors will view innovation and new technology differently. As such, each sector requires a slightly different approach to energise KET uptake into their daily operations and lives. Recognition of this reality underpinned the development of this roadmap. Stakeholders have been engaged across the Atlantic Area, through the use of online surveying, face-to-face workshops, and one-to-one interviews conducted virtually. This has enabled the authors to develop an awareness of the maritime scene and community which offers such opportunities and potential for KETs. It also provided insights into the reality of energising this uptake when framed in the context of social, financial and governance realities. Over the course of the project, the team conducted an analysis of the maritime sector, to identify and map out any KET applications that were in development. In parallel, a diverse pool of academic and commercial stakeholders identified the opportunities they could see for KET applications in the maritime sector. They also identified factors which restrict uptake, and restrain viable trans- disciplinary innovations from effectively making it to market. Stakeholder perspectives were combined with the investigative findings to develop a vision for a KET-maritime innovation ecosystem. The barriers and challenges shaped a range of proposed actions, which target different facets of the innovation ecosystem to ease growth and shape development. These actors were iteratively reviewed by stakeholders, and amended accordingly. These actions form the basis of this roadmap, a proposed path towards realising a vibrant growing KET-maritime innovation ecosystem. It contains a suite of 60 inter-linked, systemic actions, framed within 35 action areas to achieve 9 core goals, spread across 5 thematic agendas (policy, funding, building a sustainable innovation ecosystem, capacity building, and awareness raising). This envisioned KET-maritime innovation ecosystem fosters application-led innovation, and advances societal and market benefits for all. Each of the 5 thematic agendas are summarised as a policy brief, provided in the Appendices. The actions applicable to each policy brief are detailed in this report, alongside a proposed timeframe for implementation. Each action is codified, and can be traced through the iterative review process using the provenance table supplied. The potential for KET applications across the Blue Economy is extensive, and all sectors offer at least some opportunities for KETs. Within this landscape, the following sectors are identified as having strong growth potential where KET’s can help to drive that growth: Fisheries and aquaculture; Blue biotechnology; Maritime surveillance; Marine renewable energy; Ship and boat building. Within these sectors, four specific KET-maritime applications research priorities are highlighted: Advanced materials application in marine renewable energy; Photonics application in maritime surveillance; Micro- and nano-electronics in maritime surveillance; Advanced manufacturing techniques in ship and boat building. Finally, the project team would like to take this opportunity to thank all stakeholders who participated in the workshops, interviews, and review activities which culminated in this roadmap.

A strong mandate and need for socioeconomic monitoring are expressed in the NPS strategic goals for science, in statements by the NPS leadership, and the report of the Second Century Commission. This mandate resulted in a pilot socioeconomic monitoring study in 2015/2016 at a sample of park units across the U.S; the current study uses outcomes from the first stage of the pilot program and progresses into a second stage of the pilot process at 24 NPS units across the United States. Niobrara National Scenic River (Niobrara NSR) was selected as one of these units. This report informs core issues of visitor use management and develops a deeper, contemporary understanding of who visits Niobrara NSR and what they do during their visit. It uses a two-phased survey methodology to capture a representative sample of visitor information, characteristics, and behavior: (1) an on-site intercept survey conducted via tablet, and (2) a follow up (mail-back and/or online survey) for full trip details. The results are organized by these two phases and are aimed to assist park managers in understanding current utilization and perception of park resources, operations and potential issues, as well as facilitating communication and decision-making processes within the park and between the park and its local partners and stakeholders.
