Resumen
We introduce T-duality invariant versions of D-branes in doubled geometry using a global covariant framework based on para-Hermitian geometry and metric algebroids. We define D-branes as conformal boundary conditions for the open string version of the Born sigma-model, where they are given by maximally isotropic vector bundles which do not generally admit the standard geometric picture in terms of submanifolds. When reduced to the conventional sigma-model description of a physical string background as the leaf space of a foliated para-Hermitian manifold, integrable branes yield D-branes as leaves of foliations which are interpreted as Dirac structures on the physical spacetime. We define a notion of generalised para-complex D-brane, which realises our D-branes as para-complex versions of topological A/B-branes. We illustrate how our formalism recovers standard D-branes in the explicit example of reductions from doubled nilmanifolds.

Resumen
We give a microscopic explanation for the recently observed equivalence among thermodynamics of supergravity solutions for Dp-branes with or without NS B-field and for D(p-2)-branes with vanishing B-field and two delocalized transverse directions by showing that these D-brane configurations are related to one another through T-duality transformations. This result also gives an evidence for the equivalence among the noncommutative and the ordinary Yang–Mills theories corresponding to the decoupling limits of the worldvolume theories of such D-brane configurations.

Resumen
In this paper we show the equivalence of various (nonthreshold) bound state solutions of branes, or equivalently branes in background potentials, in ten- and eleven-dimensional supergravity. We compare solutions obtained in two very different ways. One method uses a zero mode analysis to make an ansatz which makes it possible to solve the full nonlinear supergravity equations. The other method utilizes T duality techniques to turn on the fields on the brane. To be specific, in eleven dimensions we show the equivalence for the (M2,M5) bound state, or equivalently an M5-brane in a C(3) field, where we also consider the (MW,M2,M2′,M5) solution, which can be obtained from the (M2,M5) bound state by a boost. In ten dimensions we show the equivalence for the ((F,D1),D3) bound states as well as the bound states of (p,q) five-branes with lower dimensional branes in type IIB, corresponding to D3-branes in B(2) and C(2) fields and (p,q) five-branes in B(2), C(2) and C(4) fields. We also comment on the recently proposed V duality related to infinitesimally boosted solutions.

Resumen
Recently, some authors proposed a new mechanism which gets rid of the Big Bang singularity and shows that the age of the universe is infinite. In this paper, we will confirm their results and predict that the universe may expand and contract many N fundamental strings decay to N M0–anti-M0-branes. Then, M0-branes join each other and build a M8-anti-M8 system. This system is unstable, broken and two anti-M4-branes, a compactified M4-brane, a M3-brane in addition to one M0-brane are produced. The M3-brane wraps around the compactified M4-brane and both of them oscillate between two anti-M4-branes. Our universe is located on the M3-brane and interacts with other branes by exchanging the M0-brane and some scalars in transverse directions. By wrapping of M3-brane, the contraction epoch of universe starts and some higher order of derivatives of scalar fields in the relevant action of branes are produced which are responsible for generating the generalized uncertainty principle (GUP). By oscillating the compactified M4-M3-brane and approaching one of anti-M4-branes, one end of M3-brane glues to the anti-M4-brane and other end remains sticking and wrapping around M4-brane. Then, by getting away of the M4-M3 system, M4 rolls, wrapped M3 opens and expansion epoch of universe begins. By closing the M4 to anti-M4, the mass of some scalars become negative and they make a transition to tachyonic phase. To remove these states, M4 rebounds, rolls and M3 wraps around it again. At this stage, expansion branch ends and universe enters a contraction epoch again. This process is repeated many times and universe expands and contracts due to oscillation of branes. We obtain the scale factor of universe in this system and find that its values only at t [Formula: see text] shrinks to zero. Thus, in our method, the Big Bang is replaced by the fundamental string and the age of universe is predicted to be infinite. Also, when tachyonic states disappear at the beginning of expansion branch, some extra energy is produced and leads to an increase in the velocity of opening of M3. In these conditions, our universe, which is located on this brane, expands very fast and experiences an inflation epoch. Finally, by reducing the fields in 11-dimensional M-theory to the fields in four-dimensional universe, we show that our theory matches with quantum field theory prescriptions.

Resumen
We investigate possible existence of duality symmetries which exchange the Kaluza–Klein modes with the wrapping modes of a BPS saturated p-brane on a torus. Assuming the validity of the conjectured U-duality symmetries of type-II and heterotic string theories and M-theory, we show that for a BPS saturated p-brane there is an SL (2, Z) symmetry that mixes the Kaluza–Klein modes on a (p+1)-dimensional torus T(p+1) with the wrapping modes of the p-brane on T(p+1). The field that transforms as a modular parameter under this SL (2, Z) transformation has as its real part the component of the (p+1)-form gauge field on T(p+1), and as its imaginary part the volume of T(p+1), measured in the metric that couples naturally to the p-brane.

Resumen
We construct dyon solutions on coincidentD4-branes, obtained by applyingT-duality transformations to type ISO(32)superstring theory in 10 dimensions. These solutions, which are exact, are obtained from an action comprising the non-Abelian Dirac-Born-Infeld action and a Wess-Zumino-like action. When one spatial dimension of theD4-branes is taken to be vanishingly small, the dyons are analogous to the ’t Hooft/Polyakov monopole residing in a3+1-dimensional spacetime, where the component of the Yang-Mills potential transforming as a Lorentz scalar is reinterpreted as a Higgs boson transforming in the adjoint representation of the gauge group. Applying aT-duality transformation to the vanishingly small spatial dimension, we obtain a collection ofD3-branes, not all of which are coincident. Two of theD3-branes, distinct from the others, acquire intrinsic, finite curvature and are connected by a wormhole. The dyons possess electric and magnetic charges whose values on eachD3-brane are the negative of one another. The gravitational effects, which arise after theT-duality transformation, occur despite the fact that the action of the system does not explicitly include the gravitational interaction. These solutions provide a simple example of the subtle relationship between the Yang-Mills and gravitational interactions, that is, gauge/gravity duality.

Resumen
U-duality symmetry of M-theory and S- and T-duality of string theory can be used to study various black brane solutions. We explore some aspect of this idea here. This symmetry can be used to get relations among various components of the metric of the black brane. These relations in turn give relations among various components of the energy–momentum tensor. We show that, using these relations, without knowing the explicit form of form fields, we can get the black brane solutions. These features were studied previously in the context of M-theory. Here, we extensively studied them in string theory (type II supergravity). We also show that this formulation works for exotic branes. We give an example of a time-dependent system where this method is essential.

Resumen
Using generalised geometry we study the action of U-duality acting in three and four dimensions on the bosonic fields of 11-dimensional supergravity. We compare the U-duality symmetry with the T-duality symmetry of double field theory and see how the [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] U-duality groups reduce to the [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] T-duality symmetry groups of the type IIA theory. As examples we dualise M2-branes, both black and extreme. We find that uncharged black M2-branes become charged under U-duality, generalising the Harrison transformation, while extreme M2-branes will become new extreme M2-branes. The resulting tension and charges are quantised appropriately if we use the discrete U-duality group [Formula: see text].

Resumen
The recently found noncritical open string theories is reviewed. These open strings, noncommutative open string theories (NCOS), arise as consistent quantum theories describing the low energy theory of D-branes in a background electric B-field in the critical limit. Focusing on the D3-brane case, we construct the most general (3+1) NCOS, which is described by four parameters. We study S- and T-dualities of these theories and argue the existence of a U-duality group.

't Hooft–Polykov magnetic monopole regularly realizes the Dirac magnetic monopole in terms of a two-rank tensor, the so-called 't Hooft tensor in 3D space. Based on the Chern kernel method, we propose the arbitrary rank 't Hooft tensors, which universally determine the quantized low energy boundaries of generalized Georgi–Glashow models under asymptotic conditions. Furthermore, the dual magnetic branes theory is built up in terms of ϕ-mapping theory.

Resumen
We develop an approximation scheme for the quantum mechanics of N D0-branes at finite temperature in the 't Hooft large-N limit. The entropy of the quantum mechanics calculated using this approximation agrees well with the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of a ten-dimensional non-extremal black hole with 0-brane charge. This result is in accord with the duality conjectured by Itzhaki, Maldacena, Sonnenschein and Yankielowicz. Our approximation scheme provides a model for the density matrix which describes a black hole in the strongly-coupled quantum mechanics.

Resumen
We perform a direct test of the gauge/gravity duality by studying one-dimensional U (N) gauge theory with 16 supercharges at finite temperature using Monte Carlo simulation. In the 't Hooft large-N limit and in the strong coupling limit, the model is expected to have a dual gravity description in terms of the near-extremal black 0-brane solution in ten-dimensional type IIA supergravity. Our results provide the first example, in which the microscopic origin of the black hole thermodynamics is accounted for by solving explicitly the strongly coupled dynamics of the open strings attached to the D-branes.

Resumen
We construct supersymmetric dyon solutions based on the ‘t Hooft/Polyakov monopole. We show that these solutions satisfy κ -symmetry constraints and can therefore be generalized to supersymmetric solutions of type I S O 32 string theory. After applying a T -duality transformation to these solutions, we obtain two D 3 -branes connected by a wormhole, embedded in an M 5 -brane. We analyze the geometries of each D 3 -brane for two cases: one corresponding to a dyon with vanishing spin and the other corresponding to a magnetic monopole with nonvanishing spin. In the case of the vanishing spin, the scalar curvature is finite everywhere. In the case of the nonvanishing spin, we find a frame dragging effect due to the spin. We also find that the scalar curvature diverges along the spin quantization axis as 1 / ρ 2 , ρ being the cylindrical, radial coordinate defined with respect to the spin axis. These solutions demonstrate the subtle relationship between the Yang-Mills and gravitational interactions, i.e., gauge/gravity duality.

Resumen
We elaborate that general intersecting brane models on orbifolds are obtained from type I string compactifications and their T-duals. Symmetry breaking and restoration occur via recombination and parallel separation of branes, preserving supersymmetry. The Ramond–Ramond tadpole cancellation and the toron quantization constrain the spectrum as a branching of the adjoints of SO(32), up to orbifold projections. Since the recombination changes the gauge coupling, the single gauge coupling of type I could give rise to different coupling below the unification scale. This is due to the nonlocal properties of the Dirac–Born–Infeld action. The desirable weak mixing angle sin 2θW = 3/8 is naturally explained by embedding the quantum numbers to those of SO(10).

Resumen
Abstract We revisit the idea that the quantum dynamics of open strings ending on N D3-branes in the large N limit can be described at large ‘t Hooft coupling by classical closed string theory in the background created by the D3-branes in asymptotically flat spacetime. We study the resulting thermodynamics and compute the Hagedorn temperature and other properties of the D3-brane worldvolume theory in this regime. We also consider the theory in which the D3-branes are replaced by negative branes and show that its thermodynamics is well behaved. We comment on the idea that this theory can be thought of as an irrelevant deformation of $$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = 4 SYM, and on its relation to $$ T\overline{T} $$ T T ¯ deformed CFT2.

Resumen
Abstract We analyze four-dimensional (4d) N = 1 superconformal field theories (SCFTs) obtained as deformations of 4d N = 2 SCFTs on S-folds by tilting 7-branes. Geometric compatibility with the structures of S-folds constrains the forms of T-branes. As a result, brane monodromies are constrained. We also discuss two 4d N = 1 theories on probe D3-branes, where the two theories behave identically in IR, but they originate from different theories in UV. Studying the global structure of their geometry is useful in constructing these two theories.

Resumen
Abstract We construct new families of $$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = (0, 4) AdS3 × S2 × $$ {\tilde{S}}^2 $$ S ˜ 2 × S1 backgrounds fibred over a 2d Riemann surface in Type IIB string theory. These solutions are obtained by extracting the near-horizon limit of D3-brane box configurations, consisting of D3-D5-NS5 branes ending on D5′-NS5′ background branes. We relate our families of solutions to previous AdS3 × S2 × CY2 and AdS3 × S3 × S2 solutions to Type IIA recently constructed in the literature. We construct explicit 2d quiver CFTs associated to the D3-brane box configurations, and check that the central charges match the holographic result. We extend our solutions to include D7-branes, and show that a subclass of these solutions can be interpreted in terms of D3-D5-NS5 defect branes embedded in a 5d fixed point theory. This is explicitly realised by linking our solutions to a 6d domain wall that asymptotes locally the AdS6 × S2 × Σ2 solution T-dual to the Brandhuber-Oz vacuum.

Resumen
Abstract We construct a new family of AdS2× S2× S2 solutions to Type IIA supergravity with 4 supercharges acting with non-Abelian T-duality on the recent class constructed in [1]. We focus on a particular solution in this class asymptoting locally to an AdS5 Gaiotto-Maldacena geometry. This solution allows for a line defect interpretation within the 4d $$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = 2 SCFT dual to this geometry, that we study in detail. We show that the defect branes, consisting on a non-trivial intersection of D2-D4-NS5-F1 branes, can be interpreted as baryon vertices within the 4d $$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = 2 SCFT, whose backreaction gives rise to the AdS2 solution. We construct the explicit quiver quantum mechanics that flows in the IR to the dual SCQM, and show that it can be embedded within the quiver CFT associated to the AdS5 solution. The quiver quantum mechanics arises from a brane box set-up of D2-branes stretched between perpendicular NS5-branes, that we construct from the AdS2 solution. We provide non-trivial checks of our proposed duality. Our construction provides one further example of the successful applications of non-Abelian T-duality to holography, in this case in providing a very non-trivial connection between AdS2 solutions, line defects and brane boxes.

Resumen
Abstract We study the construction of holographic models with closed FRW cosmologies on the worldvolume of a constant-tension brane inside a Schwarzschild-AdS black hole. In dimensions d > 2, having a smooth Euclidean solution where the brane does not self-intersect limits the brane tension to T < T*, preventing us from realising a separation of scales between the brane and bulk curvature scales. We show that adding interface branes to this model does not relax the condition on the brane tension.
